"Bleak" is my favorite all-around, with "The Moor" probably at a tie. "Blackwater Park" best for the heaviest. "Benighted" for best acoustic guitar. "Black Rose Immortal," "Windowpane," and "A Fair Judgement" for the most complex, cool melodies and harmonic content.
i agree except with your decisions on the most complex song, you have heard benighted, so i would assume you've jeard Still life. If so, you should hopefully know that songs like Moonlapse Vertigo and Godhead's lament own for complexity, and serenity painted death AND white cluster, the whole album is by far their most complaex

I agree with most stated as well, but I really don't consider BWP the heaviest. Just to name one I'd say Demon of the Fall is heavier than BWP.

Hey guys, I just got into Opeth with the following songs:
Bleak
The leper affinity
Blackwater Park
The moor
Weakness
Wreath
In the mist she was standing
What's next?
in my n00b opinion:
The Drapery Falls
The Funeral Portrait
The Apostle in Triumph
Forest of October
Those are the ones from the two albums I have, the others will help more.

download any song, buy any album by Opeth, all are great.
this is no joke, Opeth has never released anything that didn't live up to their standards.
but anyways a few of my faves:
to bid you farewell
in my time of need
black rose immortal
dirge for november
blackwater park (both song and album :p)
demon of the fall
deliverance
the drapery falls
master's apprentices
Godhead's lament
man, Opeth has too many good songs :p
oh, and if you have the money check out the Lamentations dvd, it's awesome
enjoy ;)
told you they would do a better job than I would.

Serenity Painted Death
Master's Apprentice
Harvest
Windowpane
Deliverance
April Ethereal
Or you could just listen to random songs, they are all great.

I think Orchid is a great album, even though I dislike his vocals, compared to now.
but I really love the album
favorites form Orchid:
in the mist she was standing ( but he already named it)
silhouhette
forest of october
the apostle in triumph.
I like Mikeal's demonic like vocals more.
but the guitar playing ( the twin guitars were awesome on orchid, and especialy Morninng rise)

Yeah, that's exactly what Ayreon is about for me. I actually e-mailed Arjen a few months ago thanking him for not only giving us one of the finest albums of last year, but also opening the doors to a whole variety of different bands. Coincidentally, it was actually the Ayreon album that really got me into Opeth, because hearing Mikael on there made me take a second look at them (I was at that "oooooh...death metal scary!!!" phase then)*cowers*. *puts on Godhead's Lament* BWaaaaaa!!!!
btw you can hear samples of Elfonia's music from their official page (I think it's just http://www.elfonia.com/ ). "Aura" is the group's single, and it's good, but I prefer the other song, "Nuestra descanso."

For a new band, yes. However, I think it's pretty clear that Opeth is shopping around for music labels - they won't settle for one that tries to administer any kind of creative control. Because they already have a well established fanbase, promotions, name recognition, etc, they pretty much get the freedom to do whatever it is that they want. I'm sure they'd drop any company that even so much as "hinted" as to what their music should sound like. :)

I agree with you.
Opeth just wouldn't be Opeth anymore, if they made geeky 3 minute songs.
Mikeal would never do something like that to his band, for which he has worked so hard.
Mikeal hasn't given 15 years of effort to let his sound be changed by some stupid commercial Label

Exactly.
I think that all these concerts ive been playing with our jazz band has got me back into Opeth, considering they go a bit farther than most metal bands do. Black Rose Immortal!
P.S. April Ethereal is the heaviest song ever.

Where ya been, Ivor? Haven't seen you around here in forever!
Been working and my band's been doing real well. Playin' a lot, just cut a demo...I took a semester off of school though, BIG BIG mistake. But anyway, what up with you?
Opeth rocks! :)

Upadate on my Opeth collection. Since moving I have picked up Deliverence, Still Life and Morningrise. I'm thinking about getting some special edition MAYH cd as well, as it was in stock at JB Hi-Fi, I guess I'll see how the funds are going.

Ah, congratulations! And, yeah...ugh that's no good about the school part. I'm actually about 2 1/2 months away from my Bachelor's, should be nice. :) And, as evidenced by my profile picture and user title, I've become obsessed with Irish folk music & the Bodhran.
And, yes, Opeth does indeed rock. New album, US tour...wooo!

Anyone know if PT is going to tour with Opeth again like in 2002? Hopefully...god, I want to see both bands. If I can see PT, DT, Tool and Opeth...I could die happy.
that would be so awesome, but chances it wil ever happen again are tiny.
I'm going to see PT on 2th of April, but I stil have nu clue, who's supporting them
anyone knows?
I think the chance of a Tool + Opeth gig in the autumn or winter would be quite big.
it would be a dream gig.

I know the guys in the band loved Lateralus, but I would love to hear some of Mike's influences. Because of Opeth, I got into Porcupine Tree and Anekdoten (both were on the band's playlist)
Although no one has really heard of Anekdoten, I think they are a great prog band, Gravity is one of my favorite albums (download The War is Over, its a beautiful song). I know Mike loves them...love for the Swedish Prog! ;)

Hey guys, Do you know if there are any Opeth song which have a radio edit version? I'm asking this cause I think I heard one of their song on the radio. Here are song lyrics from this song: (clean guitar) Please remedy my confusion And thrust me back to the day The silence of your seclusion Brings night into all you say Then, (distorted guitar) Pull me down again And guide me into pain
Thanx!

And yes, there is a radio edit of that song. It's about 6 minutes long(The full song is 10-12) and I heard it on a compilation called "Loud Music for Loud People". That was actualy my first experience with Opeth, and completely sold me on the band.

yes. long songs, uncut, no crappy radio edits, just the song in it's purest form.
if the song lasts 12 minutes, they should let it be like that.
the song needs 12 minutes to deliver it's lyrical and musical value to the listener.
radio edits are so wrong, it's like cutting the mona lisa in 2 parts, it would be worthless, but that's just my opinion.
I love long songs

A while back someone uploaded 'The Moor' to give 'Opeth Newbs' like myself some incite into what sort of thing that they could expect to find when listening to Opeth. My first reaction was to hate the vocals, but I really liked the instrumentals. Now about 1 month later I can't get enough of this singular song! I really need to broaden my music library and that brings me to the point of this post,

Because Opeth is a lesser known band, in a neglected genre and therefore less stores stock these sorts of albums. So to obtain t this album I am most likely going to have to make a 1-2 hour drive to the city.
Also I am new to Opeth and I don't like buying albums getting home, putting it on and being highly disappointed by it... Away to avoid this? Pre-listening to songs.

Blackwater Park sold a lot in its intial Stateside run, like a few hundred thousand copies, and now that the word of mouth is out on how brilliant they are and how accessible they can be to metalheads and fans of more cerebral music alike, their albums do even better. Deliverance and ****ation were some of the most highly anticipated albums of their respective years, for instance, and sold really well, and ****ation probably made a killing because of its sound. Those albums even got them mention in Rolling Stone, for God's sake, which is an achievement because that magazine takes such a dim view of anything with creativity. Conceding article space to Opeth was an incredible action for that magazine. It proved a lot about the respect Opeth has gained.

There's not liking something and theres putting it down without thinking about it. I don't like Blink 182 AT ALL but I wouldn't give their albums a 3%, there is always something to enjoy and think about.

The reviews on metal-archives aren't professional though, and make no claim to be. It's just people giving their opinions on albums.
I should just stick to Sputnik, the greatest review site *ever*. At least if a review is way off base there, peole will mention it.

I've reviewed "Blackwater Park" and Opeth's "D+D" albums :p for Sputnik. Check 'em out, I like getting comments. But it doesn't happen as much now that the site is less forum-based than it was. :thumb:

I've read all of the reviews and all were fantastic. Would I be able to do a Lamentions review dispite the fact it's a DVD?

Yes. It's much more streamlined and professional than the old CD reviews. I think it's great and I always check it out when looking for a new album.

Your join date would suggest that you weren't here for the old CD Review system. Did you have an old name?
The thing don't like about sputnik is that if I person can be bothered reviewing an album with detail then they most probably like it a lot. That is why I seldom come across a negative review there, and that kind of annoys me.

I have a quick question.
I heard Still Life is a concept album. What is the concept or story of it?
Thanks :thumb:

The concept is about a dude who get's banished from where he lives, and something to do with the girl he loves (Melinda) I forget the story, but it's really cool.

I've been around without a name as a guest for about a year. I learned the ways of MX and then joined when I got bored of reading other peoples stuff.
Plus, it helped me from becoming banned :thumb:.

They have the whole story in the Sputnik review if you're interested.

He is coming back from exile to find Melinda. She is now married but decides to run off with him anyway. But she is caught and killed, then the guy is also hung. That's the basic gist.

I can't stand it, to be honest. I much preferred the old forum-style of CD reviews, in which the focus was more on discussing the albums and introducing new material. I feel like it's alot harder to push the obscure groups I often liked to push on the old setup. With a traditional reviews site like Sputnik, it feels like the purpose is more for people to see what other people think of music that they've already heard; there's less of an incentive to track down and find the weird stuff that you've never heard of, you know?
I don't know if I'm making myself particularly clear, I took a nap earlier this afternoon and it kinda threw me off. :( But, bottom line: I prefered the old system. Reviews should be the start of multi-lateral discussions, not just something to read through really quick and make a quick comment in approval or disapproval.
PS does anyone know exactly how to pronounce Mikael Akerfeldt's name? I never really thought about it...
I think it would be: Ah care felt
Or it could be:
Ay care felt (emphasis on Ay, not care)
(Ay as in the word take)
Det_Nosnip

Yeah, I usually pronounce it more like the first one. What about his first name, though?
Mih-Kay-l? Or is it pronounced like the English "Michael"?
I've always just said Micheal, I never really thought too much about it. I actually think Mih-Kay-l woiuld be a safe bet, though.

I totaly agree with you.
I like the way sputnik looks and all, but I think, it's too static.
unknown bands can stand up in a fight against the bigger names.
(like the ranking list ob the left, it's all Tool, Metallica, Radiohead, those are all fairly known)
it's good for known bandas, but almost no one can discover unknown bands :(
sometimes I go to the 'view all artists section' and just click on a random artist, and read a review, this does help me expend my music library :)

He said on Lamentions that he's considering a concept album so fingers crossed.

What exactly does that mean? Will they change their sound or something?
They'll change their sound like they always have. I doubt they'll keep the same style as BWP and the following albums.
Nice avatar Cain.

I just hope they don't go lighter. They should try to be really ambitious with this one. More medieval guitar, dammit!!!
I like the medieval guitar. But whatever they incorporate into the sound, it will rule.

Originally, the band was going to make their next release a kind of dark black metal type of thing rather than the prog death they usually do, but they decided against it.

In Lamentations didn't Mike say that he was absolutely sick of that style of playing in the documentary? He said he liked Morningrise, but there was some parts he couldn't even stand to listen to because of the guitar style (meaning the medieval guitar :( )
I just want more Opeth! I'm not sure I would like it if they went back to that style,I mean its cool, but I like Deliverance style alot more (everything but Wreath). And I hope they stick to the jazzy type.... interludes? I don't know what to call them but you know what I'm talking about.

Yes, the ones that sound medievalish.
Medieval guitars?

The acoustics more than anything else. The chord structures and progressions on songs like Benighted and Advent are very Baroque-ly minor key to me.

What he meant was the twin guitar parts, the electrics more than the acoustics: and the utter lightness and darkness of the themes, when they switched. The acoustic guitar on Still Life, two albums later, is the medieval guitar that I want back. I saw none of it on ****ation, or Deliverance either with the exception of the bridge to "A Fair Judgement."

Ohhh, I thought he meant the acoustics.
But still, I like the more death metalish side of Opeth. Albums like Blackwater Park and Deliverance. The older albums were good too, but I like the newer ones because they are way heavier :thumb:

I just learned how to play the Entire song "In Mist She Was Standing" rythm. I record all the higher parts in my 8 year old ZOOM pedal and play the lower or standard parts as I go along with the song. I still can't figure out how to play the acoustic riff before the outro though. It's really hard to get it to sound like it is, actually I don't think I can get it to sound like that. It's a masterpiece. I don't know what kind of acoustic he used to record that riff with...but It sounds like a Martin to me :thumb:
What do you guitarists out there think?

heh...I'd kill for a Martin acoustic. Nice job on learning the song, though. I have yet to tackle that one. I've been making my way through the Delieverance album for some reason.
EDIT: That's a cool feature on the Zoom pedal, too. It's perfect for learning/writing parts with two simultaneous guitar parts.
