I'm not sure. The only screaming during the Damnation set that I can think of is the horrid screech at the beginning of Hope Leaves, my favorite Damnation song :(
What screech? My copy doesn't have one.

I'm new to Opeth, but I really enjoy what I've heard. I own Ghost Reveries and Damnation, what should be the next Opeth album I get? Personally, I'm not a big fan of the cookie monster vocals, but I can ignore it. I love Mikael Akerfeldt's singing voice.
Blackwater Park, me would say.

This is really funny, because the two songs you mentioned are the ones I don't think are as good. It's not that they're bad songs, but they aren't nearly as strong as the beasts like Windowpane, In My Time of Need, and Ending Credits.

It's not exactly my cup of tea, either. I like how they got heavier, but I think that some of their songs just drag on for wayyyy too long.
Still, Ghost of Perdition is one of the band's strongest songs to date.

The big beef I have with it, is that it sounds "pop-ish" compared to their other stuff. But meh, all of their stuff is good.

I think the reason people find it "poppish" is because they actually use a few major-key riffs in it, as opposed to the standard minor-key metal riffing. I still don't fully understand how you could not like the album though.. not that I want to start another discussion on it. :p

It just occurred to me today that the excuse that some people have saying that earlier Opeth was amateur and just parts glued together is a bunch of BS. Today I decided to give Blackwater Park a spin (its been a while). Now listen to The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park (the song), and The Funeral Portrait and tell me that that isn't the same type of structure that earlier Opeth (Orchid/Morningrise) used. Its all the same, just better production and better everything else. I just wanted to point out that when people say that its total BS.
Moses
09-05-2006, 11:54 PM
Nah, the structure is pretty much the same but it doesn't flow as well on the earlier albums. The leading is alot better on the new albums.
Well, there's better building and resolving of tension and things like that.

No.....starting at about Still Life you start to see use of verse and chorus in songs as well as repeating and varying themes throughout songs. Take The Moor, it revisits several main themes a number of times throughout. Godhead's Lament also does this, and it becomes more and more evident through many/most later Opeth songs.

Meh. I don't think so. I find that the first two albums are all about riffs- the riffs come one after another, relentlessly, without repetition, until the end of the song. On every album after that, Opeth start to use recurring themes and interesting song structures, rather than just a progression of riffs. They also use far less guitar harmonizing, and rely more on melodies (especially on BWP, Still Life and GR) to carry the songs. In their early days Opeth didn't really experiment with different melodies and progressions, but lately (example: The Drapery Falls) use very unconventional chord changes, key changes, etc. for effect.
Uh.. for little differences, there is more clean singing, more low-pitched growling, and in turn less screaming. The production is also less thin.. the first two albums sound very much alike in production.
So basically, I think new Opeth is much different. And much better. :)

I've never really found anything by Opeth that I really liked but yesterday I was taking part in The Riff Game in the guitar forum and one of the riffs was Opeth - Master's Apprenticies, I love that riff intro/main riff.
And I never knew the vocalists voice was so damn growly, I knew he went deep at times but I didn't know he went all out death metal.

I really like Orchid, BWP, Still Life is cool, I haven't listened to much of Morningrise, but I love "To Bid You Farewell". Do you guys think I'd like Damnation? I also wondering cause I heard they play it on Lamentations.
Damnation is clean/acoustic. Dark and quite beautiful. I love it. If your liking of Opeth isn't dependent upon high-octane heavy sections, then you'll undoubtedly like it.

Taken from "In my time of need".

There is a wound that's always bleeding

I have to confess that when I saw them and that song came on, I went crazy in the mosh pit. It really worked for that.
The rest of the set, I watched and listened intently, though.

I could imagine it being alot better in concert just because it's so darn heavy. On CD the riffs just don't give off enough power as they would in concert.

It was more the vocals than anything that made it unbelievable.
Normally, you got the chorus riff with "THE EYES! OF THE DEVIL!" where Mike adds the pause in between the lines. Live, he just HELD "eyes" out over the passage up until the next line. It was flat out BR00TAL (for lack of better term).

The only Opeth album I have is Blackwater Park, and it's quite good, I don't really find myself listening to it often, but every now and again a song pops up on my iTunes and i'll pay attention. I love his clean vocals, but his growl is kind of comical.
I know a lot of people that find the growling comical, and I can definately see it that way.
Think about it: Here's this guy just belting out a ridiculously low growl trying to sound sinister or whatever. I don't find it funny, but I can see how people would. It might just be hard to take seriously because it could border on gimmicky.
Why Opeth though? loads of bands growl buh. I see other bands growling/screaming as comical because they suck hard compared to Mike...
Well, growling in general can be hard to take seriously for someone for whom it doesn't click.

Well basically this is an Opeth thread, so when I find a Black Dahlia Murder thread or such i'll be sure to make fun of their growl.
I find it comical becuase he sounds like the cookie monster, I don't hate it, it's quite enjoyable, just kinda smirk worthy.

I can't help it if I love parts of a song, but hate others. I don't want to sit through 3 minutes of a crappy acoustic riff.
I assume you're talking about the huge breakout after the acoustic section. While that part is amazing, it's made all the better by the long build up to it. It makes the release just that much more exciting and satisfying. But I adore every single part of that song like a son, so that's just me.
The beginning of BWP is awesome. The riffs are just sick and amazing. Then the acoustic section drags on soooooooooo damn long...and IMO the section after it isn't too amazing.

It was quite a kick *** performance from them. Every song was flawless. I felt it was just way too short. Megadeth owned all though. Wow. Just wow.
I don't think there's a single song on the album that doesn't have at least one part that completely blows me away. A lot of his clean vocal lines do it.
For me it's the lack of interesting riffs. Also the fact that the soft songs are totally lacking that beautiful acoustic playing that used to make mellow Opeth sections so long. It seems like the guitar is just thrown in there to get the job done, on heavy sections as well as soft.
