Opeth just have way too many good songs. Have they ever made a bad song?

penelope weird hands
08-06-2006, 06:09 AM
Good to see some The Funeral Portrait fans.

So.. lists then, eh?

Albums
1. My Arms, Your Hearse
2. Still Life
3. Blackwater Park
4. Deliverance
5. Ghost Reveries
6. Damnation
7. Orchid
8. Morningrise

Songs
1. The Moor
2. Harvest
3. April Ethereal
4. Ghost Of Perdition
5. Patterns In The Ivy II

That was not easy.

EDIT: ^To JamJar - IMO, I don't believe they have written anything 'bad'.. my least favourite/s would only consist of parts of Orchid/Morningrise that I get bored of and possibly Weakness.
But there is definately none of Opeth that I would turn off or skip because I think it's bad.

TojesDolan

You sir, are now entering a bad place.

Weakness is the ****ing greatest song in Damnation, period. YOu have to listen to it more throughly. Despite its inherent simplicity it is a beautiful song.

And uh... I don't know. I should look over the songs I don't like.

Weakness is the worst song on Damnation aside from lyrics.

The best song on Damnation would be To Rid The Disease.

I don't know about either of those statements.

My favorite would be Hope Leaves, and my least favorite would be Death Whispered A Lullabye.

Look, I am obsessed with To Rid The Disease, because Mikael sings in the higher portions of his range for Damnation, though much more powerfully & clearly, however, during the chorus of To Rid The Disease, he sings in the mid-range he sang in on the older albums, but just as powerfully, and it sounds absolutely beautiful, because it's the most developed region of his voice.

They're more "progressive" than Opeth's other albums. The shifts in timing and tictures are much more abrupt and dramatic. I guess what makes it good in my eyes is that, unlike later Opeth, the songs are less predictable. Every song is packed full of great moments and melodies and you never know where a song will go. The acoustic parts especially make the albums for me. I can't really talk you into liking it, you'll just have to give it time yourself. Orchid is my favorite Opeth album.

The acoustic parts especially make the albums for me. I can't really talk you into liking it, you'll just have to give it time yourself. Orchid is my favorite Opeth album.

I agree with you completely.

I'd go with My Arms, Your Hearse or Still Life as my favorite though :D.

More structure than the first two, less predictability then the later ones.

I only have a Ghost Reveries shirt.
The one with the candles on it.

I'm having a dilemma though.. I can't seem to get into Orchid or Morningrise at all! I get so bored and the songwriting really shits me to tears.

Can someone give me directions at what to focus on and what makes you think these albums are fantastic(or at least good!)?
It's like I listen to these albums and I don't mind them, but, every other release is so much better..and also I'm thinking maybe I just don't 'get it' when it comes to those albums. :/

Morningrise has really long songs on it so that might be why? Really long for Opeth so you know they are LLOOOOONNNNNGGGG. So maybe thats why? Orchid I have never heard though so I cant help you with that.

They're more "progressive" than Opeth's other albums.
I wouldn't say that at all. More "melodic," maybe...they were essentially a melodic death band. Opeth have gotten *progressively* more progressive with each album.

What do you mean "like" Blackwater Park? All the songs on that album are stylistically and sonically the most similar to it, while the songs on Deliverance are most similar in terms of the amount of heaviness. As the guy above me said, BWP and Still Life are the albums that are most similar to the song BWP.

BRI is off of Morningrise, which is a much earlier album. Mikael's vocals definitely improved big time inbetween there. As others have said, look for the rest of the BWP album - Bleak, Lepar Affinity, The Drapery Falls, etc. Also, look for Still Life - The Moor, Godhead's Lament, Serenity Painted Death, White Cluster. Off of Deliverance, look for Deliverance, Wreath, and Master's Apprentices. The earlier albums have poorer production, but you might appreciate My Arms Your Hearse anyways...look for "Demon of the Fall," "When," "April Ethereal," and "The Amen Corner." (my personal recommendations...everyone has their favorites) If you're into softer material, then that's a whole different list. :)

BWP is actually my least favorite of all the newer Opeth releases (Still Life - present). It starts out so good, Leper Affinity, Bleak, Harvest and The Drapery Falls are four of my absolute favorite Opeth songs. Then Dirge For November, with IMO the single worst intro to any Opeth song. After that the album just loses me until the title track.

I love how Opeth can make their songs so long and still remain interesting...but GR just didn't do that. The production is the one thing I don't really like about the album. For the guitars especially it seemed like a huge step down from BWP and Deliverance. When SW was producing the guitars were crushingly heavy, but on GR there was no power to them.

Ehh...I'm more partial to Deliverance than Still Life, but Blackwater Park reigns supreme in the world of Opeth.

Still Life is just more difficult to listen to than Deliverance. I can pop in Deliverance at any time and always get a kick out of it. I really have to sit down and pay attention to Still Life when I put it in, which makes it more difficult, and in the end, less enjoyable.

@Darkness: MA pisses me off. It's really awesome, but waaay too much of the main riff. It's still a great track, but if it had a bit of variation to the main riff, it might be my favorite Opeth song.

 That fix made me laugh so hard.

Master's Apprentice is the only song off of Deliverance that I don't have. When I downloaded it, it's the only track I didn't get.

It is awesome. But the live version from Lamentations is even better.

Does the word Opeth mean anything as such? I've never researched it so i dunno.

I can't remember what book its from but in the book it was spelt without the 'h' on the end. In the book Opet was the city of the moon I believe.

In My Time Of Need is probably the greatest thing, well, ever.

Am I alone in preferring Opeth's lighter/acoustic stuff to the heavier stuff?

No mate - I enjoy Damnation and some others better than a lot of their really heavy stuff as well

Agreed. Opening with Master's Apprentices is something they should do at every show. It's just so heavy.

Last time I saw Opeth live they didn't even play it. The was the only thing about that show that I felt should have been changed cause I love that song. Oh well. I can watch it live on the lamentations dvd but it is still not the same as being there.

Yeah, live, it's unbelieveable. When they first kick into the sick intro, I have trouble thinking of a band that sounds that heavy live.

And that live drum part is better than the studio version too. Bonus.

I love the way Martin looks so serene whilst playing that ridiculously fast double kick part - it's like he's thinking of what he'll have for supper or something equally mundane.

Tojes likes Ghost Reveries guys.

It's all about The baying of the hounds. Depends on my mood as well, anyway.

I've got that on WMP now - how spooky!

Still like Harlequin Forest better though.

I'm still trying to figure out the reason for the existence of "Reverie", and why despite it being considered part of Harlequin forest, and flowing right directly into it, it's attached to "Atonement".

Ghost Reveries has some good songs, but the album as a whole is definitely not on par with Still Life or Blackwater Park.

Yeah, it is rather confusing. Typically Opeth tho, I 'spose.

I hear from the Opeth forum that on the cd version, it's in between the two tracks. But I am unsure of this, because I don't have the cd version.

It is. Once Atonement finishes, Reverie plays in the negative time limit of HF.

Ghost Reveries has some good songs, but the album as a whole is definitely not on par with Still Life or Blackwater Park.

Considering Blackwater Park has The Funeral Portrait and Dirge For November which has some hugely boring parts in it, Ghost Reveries is definately up there with it as an album. The worst part of Ghost Reveries is TGC, which is better than both of those songs.

Still Life beats Ghost Reveries though. Regardless... My Arms Your Hearse is a better album than Blackwater Park, probably. Even though Blackwater Park has some awesome songs.

I personally prefer Dirge Of November to TGC. Overall I think BWP is better than GR purely because of the first four tracks. But in all, I think that Still Life is the Opeth masterpiece. Everything about the album is so perfect.

TGC studio version really sucks IMO. It was ment to bring the album to a climax, and it just didn't work. Horrible track. But live, thats a different story.

Dirge for November is one of my favorite Opeth songs.

Dirge for November is one of my favorite Opeth songs.

I used to love it loads but it's gradually declined in my liking. I love the whole atmosphere of the song and the outro is so cool.

Ok, not in a derogative or provocative way, can somebody explain to me what makes this band so highly regarded ?

I just do not find anything interesting about Opeth; I find it to be drawn out and actually physically draining to listen to in the sense that I just cant stand it, it really really grates me.

I know this is subjective, but if anyone could chuck in what makes them so great, i'll listen to them with some more things in mind.

I'd have to second that...

Its not that I despise them, i just don't understand the appeal I suppose. I've tried getting into them four separate times now, but to no avail

Outstanding drumming and bass playing, interesting, original riffs, great vocals, and contrast between light and shade.

That and the huge amount of emotion that I sense in the bands music.

I totally agree. Dirge for November is so incredibly dark and awesome, while The Grand Conjuration just drags on for way too long. They play the main riff way too much on that track. The intro riff for that song is awesome, though.
