View Full Version : Opeth
Haha, great song.
I'm listening to some of My Arms Your Hearse now. I haven't listened to a lot of this album, but so far, I like it. :)
Orchid is still one of my favorite albums of all time.
I actually listened to Orchid recently, and just didn't get as much of a thrill out of it as I used to. Their songwriting ability just wasn't nearly as refined as it is now. I'm much more likely to pop in Blackwater Park or Deliverance.
But the opening harmonized riffs in In The Mist She Was Standing = sex.

Anyone think Closure is one of their great songs? Seriously, I love that song. I think it's the best track on Damnation.
I have almost every Opeth album... I wonder why I don't post in here.

It's a great song with some really memorable licks and riffs, but I think people tend to overrate it. In My Time of Need is easily the best song on Damnation IMO. Ending Credits has also always been a favorite of mine.

To Rid The Disease is also great. Listening to it now
Hell, the entire album is pretty incredible. The only song that I think is weak is To Rid the Disease. After hearing every other song be incredibly impressive, it just can't compare.
Here's a chance to whore out my Damnation review :)

To Rid the Disease is great. I thought it was average, then I saw it live at SOTU... that style of song was so unheard of at that show, that it made me love the song. Great chorus + piano lines.

I've always loved To Rid The Disease... it's probably my favorite Opeth song... Mikael actually sings in it... like, he sings in other songs... but it's normally softer and more soothing, and like... cool, but in the chorus of that song he's so powerful... plus the keyboards own.

Most fun Opeth riffs to play: The Moor. Or maybe BWP.
The first Distorted riff is fun to play.Awsome song. I like the ohhh parts at almost the end of the song heh:p

Incredibly for a progressive music fan right here, I think it drags on too much. The live version however, is one of my favorites and it's even longer. Go figure.

Off topic but.. I am finally beginning to enjoy Orchid!
Listened to it for the first time in ages and it clicked like never before.
There are still some parts I cringe at, songwriting wise.. but, the acoustic parts are the best Opeth have written, IMO, and more than make up for anything I dislike.
As for fave from Damnation I would say Closure, aswell.
Beautiful vocal harmonies followed by crazy riffs, then finishing with more harmonies before the awesome outro.
I always feel like i'm in a desert at that part.
Completely off topic now, but I got a new keyboard today. w00t!
I mention this only in hope that nobody else has felt the pain and tedium of having to cut and paste letters from notepad or webpages to create words/sentences...
Not fun. }:/

Hehe .. Bleak was my first one too... And one of my all time favorites
I think Bleak is the song that everyone hears to get into the band. Lots of people have been mentioning it, and it was also the song that got me into them.
I listened to it just about every day and always get a kick out of it. So amazing.
Deliverance was the song that got me into Opeth and it's still one of my all time Favorite tunes.

Whats wrong with Morningrise?
Nothing. It's just not the 2nd Opeth album you should get, at all, unless you're some kind of gothenburg fanatic or something then maybe i'd recommend it first.
I still don't "Get" Orchid and half of Morningrise, it's actually totally lacking in any form of energy for me. I hardly get anything out of the music, which is totally weird considering I love gothenburg metal (In Flames and Dark Tranquility).
Hearse onwards Opeth is genius though, as are the more clean segments of Moringrise.

A fallacy is an argument based on an incorrect fact or incorrect reasoning. For example, a story in court might be based on evidence which is invalid.
Fallacious is the adjective of the word. The meaning has changed a bit over time, and it can be used more generally.

Research isn't a forte with you guys, is it?
Requiem Aeternam began its activities in September of 1995 in Montevideo (Uruguay) featuring their first demo in a local compilation. At that time the line-up consisted of Martín López (Amon Amarth; Opeth) on drums, Martín Méndez (Opeth) on bass, Pablo Magallanes on guitar and José Romero (Inner Sanctum) handling guitar and vocal duties.
Both Martins left the band (presumably to go join Opeth...it said lineup change was around 1997), but that picture is presumably an early photo while they were still in the group.

Orchid and Morningrise are not heavier than My Arms, Your Hearse or Deliverance, however, they are very melodic with plenty of dual guitar harmonies and blissful acoustic parts.
If I were you, I'd go and grab MA,YH.
I think it, along with and next to Still Life and Blackwater Park, is the core of Opeth's sound.

TojesDolan

Deliverance has a lot more punch and less acoustic riffs/parts than the past songs, considering especially the length of most songs.
And my problem with the vocals in Deliverance is that the growling feels like it was rush-recorded, and Mike's vocals are definitely not at their best.

I see it as different facets of the same expression. Damnation has some very heavy moments, but they're not expressed through growled vocals or distorted guitars...it's a different kind of heaviness. Deliverance is definitely one of the more aggressive albums to date, yet it also has its tender moments. *shrug*
Deliverance isn't all heavy, but it would have sucked if it were. Wreath is a boring song, to me, and I think the lack of acoutic interludes has something to do with it.
However Deliverance is by far the heaviest, in terms of heavy:soft ratio.

I think Deliverance has just about as much acoustic parts as their other albums. Maybe not as much but when they come up in the songs they're great. Such as the parts in Deliverance, A Fair Judgement, Master's Apprentices, For Absent Friends is all soft (not sure if its acoustic though), and that one little freak circus section in BTPISIO.
The soft parts in Deliverance are definitely less frequent and shorter than in other albums...the other two with the most heaviness are MAYH and Blackwater Park, but each of them has a significant acoustic part in every song at least. Meanwhile, Wreath has NOTHING soft except a few bars of acoustic playing, Deliverance only has the one soft section (walk with me etc), A Fair Judgement has its intro and the acoustic solo and the part after it, For Absent Friends is 2 minutes long, and then MA and BTPISIO each have a 2-3 minute soft section and the rest is heavy.

Had it have been that way that album would have been an easy classic. By themselves they barely stand short.
By the way, anyone else think the part in Ghost of Perdition where Mikael says:
Ghost of perdition
A saint's premonition's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes
Keeper of holy whores
is incredibly awesome? I think that's one of the most badass moments in any of Opeth's songs.

I think the keyboards on the new album kinda killed it somewhat for me. In songs like Baying of The Hounds, the beginning just sounds so cheesy/happy. Also in Beneath The Mire. Though just about every song is good i hope they somehow make a better balance between the keyboards and the rest of the band. Or just make better use with the keyboards.
I like the keyboards in the album, I dislike the guitar work though.

i like the fact that Deliverance an Damnation were released at seperate times as fans had a chance to digest one album (to me the more i listen to the song, the more it appeals to me, their music grows on me like Ivy). and gave them another album to look forward to.

I like the keyboards in the album, I dislike the guitar work though.
The Keyboards really added to the music IMO

I suppose I've never thought guitar has to be the most prominant instrument in a band, so it's never bothered me. One of Opeth's best albums.
I agree. I always loved Opeth for the whole package and never favored one aspect of theirs over the others. I cant get enough of this album.

i too am a bigger fan of older opeth (ie. morningrise/orchid/MAYH) i think these albums create a darker atmosphere. although the rest of thier albums are pure masterpieces these just appeal to me more.
Same, those are by far my favorite Opeth albums,

I thought the keys could have been used better. I mean I'm not a fan of the whole crappy string synth in the back of like every song. The keys are used right in a couple songs but that's about it.
Is it just me, or does anyone really love the "Damnation" album. I can't pick a favourite, because everything is good, but Damnation really shows off their mellower and beautiful sounds. Plus, Mikael's voice is all clean in that one.
Also, one thing I really like about Opeth that stands out from most other bands is how they BRILLIANTLY incorporate acoustic fingerpicking into their songs. The guitarist who does this deserves MAD PROPS. The rhythms are really complex!
Also, I love how the scales are so dynamic. It's not any form of pentatonic, and the solos are very unconventional.

The solos aren't really that outside the box but Mikael and Peter both have a REALLY good sense of melody, making them very memorable.

Damnation is a great album. I've listened it to a lot, so I'm getting kid of sick of it.
I just saw the Lamentations DVD with a friend....amazing experience. Now I remember why I love Deliverance so much :D

The best use of keyboards is the organ effect on GOP and BOTH. The synth strings are lame and kill the soft songs.

Isolation years is great.
The effect in the chorus, whatever instrument it is adds a lot of... DARKNESS to the song.
