Yeah I listen to lighter stuff in the summer, heavier stuff in the winter. My friend makes fun of me for listening to Sublime too much these days.
I listen to a quite a bit of sublime. I don't really change what I listen to by the season but by my mood.

Perhaps I'm just a little dissappointed with the setlist (could have been slightly better, imo), or that I ended up stuck with a chick who wasn't enjoying herself for the majority of it. Maybe I just have my knickers in a twist because I've had 4 hours sleep in the last two days. Anyway, none of that stuff is even remotely Opeth's wrongdoing. I guess I just didn't enjoy myself as much as I thought I would have.

Yeah, I didn't think the setlist was that amazing, but did like don't get me wrong.

The opening riff to Wreath crushes souls into Damnation.

PS: Blackwater Park the song is soo good.

MAYH is a Great album. Don't associate me with black metal die hard fan but the weak production contributes to the whole sound - dark and dirty.

After I bought and listened to Morningrise for a few months, I bought MAYH, listened to it and thought at the time it was Opeth's worst album of the 3. I never listened to it after the first listen, until a few months later. I listened to it on the headphones when I went to sleep almost every night, later memorized all the lyrics and just recently it happened to occur to me that this is their best work to date. I couldn't stand the album at first, but it broke a barrier in my musical taste. There's something about MAYH that burned in my head, and I can't explain how.

As of now, here's my updated Top Five Opeth Songlist:

3. In Mist She Was Standing

Yes, like Master's Apprentice, it goes into this crazy death like intro, then half way into the song, it cuts off and goes to clean guitar and vocals. It disappoints me.

For bands I would have to say..
1. Tool
2. The Smashing Pumpkins
3. Mastodon
4. Jeff Buckley
5. Mr. Bungle

I think the best thing about Opeth is their juxtaposition of clean/heavy parts.
It adds a lot more mood(s) and gives a much broader variety of soundscapes to their songs with them being able to add different sonic elements.. not to mention the expanse and opportunity of songwriting capabilities they get from being very open to dynamics.

They didn't have rights to any of their old stuff at the time of the concert, so they could just play stuff from BWP, Deliverance and Damnation. In fact they did play Demon of the Fall as an encore, but it's not on the DVD.

er...

I can't think of one Opeth song that's anything like what you just described.

Most of their songs are fairly balanced between heavy and soft, many of their songs even have more heavier parts than soft parts as well. Very few songs are noticably way more soft than heavy unless they're actually completely clean songs.

Exactly. There are very few Opeth sogns that solely feature heavy material, so it would kind of be impossible for them to only scream the entire time.

The MX community is a pretty harsh one, too. People won't listen to you usually unless you have a certain post count.
Just to point out some comparisons, MX is harsher than some places, but I think it's mostly in a good way. Some forums have no tolerance whatsoever for criticism of stupidity. MX keeps idiocy down to a healthy level by members flaming people that say stupid things...in some places you'll be threatened with a ban if you're even slightly rude.

On the other hand, the extreme the Opeth forum goes to is bad too...everyone is just a dick to each other.

Demon isn't a bad song (pretty much no Opeth song is) but I really don't think it's that much of a standout track at all. The chorus kicks ***, sure, but aside from that it's really nothing special. April Ethereal and When are way better than it, on the album alone.

I used to think that, but it clicked with me, now it's one of my favourite Opeth songs.

Followed closely by Demon of the Fall and April Ethereal. The rest of the album is great too.

Don't worry, I used to feel the same way. I just love it for it's sheer rage and agression. I can understand why people always want to hear it live.

The part where Mikael actually screams "Demon! Demon of the Fall!" is the best part of the song and I think it's the coolest part on the album.

One from each album:

Orchid - The Twilight is my Robe
Morningrise - Black Rose Immortal
MAYH - April Ethereal
Still Life - The Moor

Deliverance - Deliverance
Damnation - Death Whispered a Lullaby (don't listen to these wankers hating on the song, it rules)
Ghost Reveries - Ghost of Perdition

Well for echoes in Opeth their first album is pretty good for that. Whenever Mikael whispers (like in In the Mist She Was Standing) it's loaded with crazy echoes so it's even hard to understand at times. It's still pretty cool though.

I have Orchid, but that's the one album I always tend to ignore..

i did a big Opeth feature in my college paper when i reviewed Ghost Reveries (a small history, with mini reviews for all the albums and lamentations. took up two whole pages, it was awesome). I only gave Orchid 3.5 stars out of 5, where everything else was 4 and above, though i mentioned that some Opeth fans love it dearly

what am i missing with Orchid? i used to hate Morningrise and even Still Life... i havent listened to it in months, maybe ill give it a spin later

as for Weakness, that song is great. one of my "perfect" music moments was driving through my neighborhood at 4 a.m. on a chilly winter night, then that song kicked in and i realized how powerful it was after disliking it before

Fave Opeth... I don't really have a favorite song of all time

I'm a music major.
I'm not exactly sure if I have a single favorite song of all time, but I think I have two, and Opeth claims one of them (The Leper Affinity).

Since I'm still in high school, I've been thinking about what I want to do when I go to college. I'm really into music (duh, I talk on here all the time), and do you like what you're doing? Or is being a music major not all it's cracked up to be?

I love it, Just be prepared to work hard at your studies. The great thing about being a music major is that you form a tight bond with your fellow classmates.

Sounds like a deal.

Well now that Damnation is finishing up, I'm going to get off MX for the night. See you all tomorrow, fellow Opeth soldiers.

Gnite friend.

I think I'm gonna major in music production/engineering...I since realized I'm probably not going to be a good enough musician to make a full time career out of it.

Plus, this way, if I ever do feel like writing a record, I'll have connections.

I never done music in school. They made it really crap, and I wasn't really into music in general back then.

Something I always regret is not taking music in school.

That's exactly like me, I hated music/music class in elementary, but then found my own love for it in later jr high. I wish my high school offered some kind of music program besides choir... :upset:

I took general music in 6th and 8th grade, and chorus in 7th. Hated all of it.

I got to take Music Theory this year, which I love. Best class.

A good portion of it is a bull**** class though...like today, we learned the fine art of moving risers down to the stage.

Our county has a horrid music program...

I know, it was bollocks. They sat the class down with a guitar each and all we did for an hour was strum. We weren't even doing chords!

17 isn't really late to start guitar. I'd have just preffered a little earlier.

I <3 music theory.

I took guitar from 10-12 grade in high school. I loved it. Then the summer before my freshmen year of college I decided to major in music.

As do I. My favorite class this year, in spite of how horrid I am at sight singing.

It and incredibly imprtant tool. If you can master then you'll be able to audiate a piece of music.

Yeah I talk on topic stuff.

I can't decide whether I want to major in that or Education. I have some odd desire to be a teacher, I just think it would be a fun job.

I've been playing guitar for a year now, I started when I was 15. I'd love to make a career out of writing music, but I doubt I'll ever get to that point.

Sorry guys, I'm leaning towards not voting for Lopez in the drummer poll. :(

Same with me, teaching is just appealing for some reason.

I'm not even trying a career in music, I'm too realistic for that.

so your going to teach music?

Whats most appealing about teaching to me, is the fact I'm passing on my passion to kids.

To all who say that they'd like a career in music: go for it. It you really feel that music is a special thing to you and truthfully you will be dedicated to it and willing to give up your time for it, you should totally go for it.

Producers need to know how to play every instrument. With the technology used today in recording you need a college degree. (its a music business degree)
I was incorporating all types of music careers.

Ok well generally when someone says 'music degree' they mean they're going to study music itself. I go to school for audio production and recording meself.

You're lucky that you have some idea of what you want to do, I'm still drifting through school without a major :/

That's not a bad trade off though...the Master's Apprentice alone makes it worth it.

You share my philosophy. MTSU for me, so's I can get me some music production/engineering degree. That 26 on the ACT (do any of you crazy kid's states use that, or are you all about the SAT?) should help me out a bit.

Killtacular

It goes from 0-36. 18 would probably be what the average jock would get (average for my HS). 21 will get you a low paying scholarship paid for by the lottery. 26 and up will get you more money for that scholarship, and possibility for free rides to some skools. 30-36 are fairly rare, and mean you kick more *** than everyone else.

I have no idea how the SAT goes, though.

That 26 is gonna need to come with some wicked good grades before the free ride offers start coming in.

I have no idea on the SAT either. Especially not since they changed it to a 2400 (?) point scale. I just know I kicked *** on the PSAT.

EDIT: Wreath? Snore-fest? It's such a killer song. I love the production with the atmospheric guitars in the background too.

I think you'd need at least a 3.5 for my college of choice. Too bad I have a 3.0.

I like Deliverance (the album), it's a very solid piece overall and I like all the songs in it (all but key parts, like the beginning to master's apprentices which I find dull, and some parts of A fair judgment and repetitiveness issues with BTPISIO), but it just seems... frigid, compared to say, Still life or my arms, your hearse, in the sense of not being as rich and... colorful, if you'd like to see it that way.

Just have to wait for Deliverance now.

I got a 1300 on my SAT on the old scale (650 math, 650 verbal)...

My GPA was 3.1 unweighted (I took all honors and AP classes)...

I got into my first choice college, where I am now completely average compared to everyone else. College is definitely awesome, though. You have to deal with far less stupid people...
