Ending Credits and Weakness were the songs that I liked the most when I first heard Damnation, I liked Hope Leaves, I just found the former to be more apealing to me on my first listen. They still don't compare to Epilogue. That has to be my favorite Opeth song at this moment.

The chord progressions are cool too.
Ah, the ever creative i-iv-V... at least Mike threw some color notes in the chords to make it decent. The lead is really what makes that song though.

Weakness I don't like that much...it's too...weird, even by Opeth standards.
Ending Credits rocks though...
Man, I just can't get over that sung part in Godhead's Lament. I was listening to it again today, and it never ceases to amaze me...
Tool AND Opeth? Dredg too! When do we find out if it's the same day? Because if they are then I'm definately going.
I know mang. :upset:
On Topic...
I was listening to My Arms, You're Hearse in my bed last night.
Man, I knew it was gooood.
But afterwards I think it's definately in my top 3 Opeth observations. :p

I put an interview in this thread a very long time ago in wich mike expressed interest in touring with Tool and Metallica. In particular, Mike said that the band were big Tool fans and that a tour with Tool would be great for the audiences of both bands to experience something new. So it isn't a new ambition of his to tour with them, just depends on if it progresses past the talk stage.

Parabol/a is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written. How that song couldn't grab someone who listens to it a few times is beyond me.

maybe deliverance is better than ghost reveries.
Best album....extremely hard to say. My FAVORITE would be Still Life, but most of their albums are in the running. Worst would have to be Orchid...bad production, weak, amateurish, sloppy songwriting, acoustic parts far less interesting than even on Morningrise...yeah.

My favourite Opeth ALBUMS are Still Life, Damnation, Ghost Reveries and My Arms, Your Hearse. Blackwater Park has some of my favourite Opeth songs on it, Deliverance has two great Opeth songs on it, Morningrise also has two very good Opeth songs on it, Orchid isn't really to my tastes.. I think due to production and their songwriting ability at that point.

I used to think it was weak, but seriously, just overall as an album it's amazing. Concept like Still Life, in fact, I see it as a slightly weaker Still Life really, except its darker and colder, and muddier. And the clean sections have more obvious 70's prog leanings with the effects used and such.
I just love the atmosphere of it now.

My thoughts exactly. MAYH, while not being bad, is just not as epic and wonderful as their other releases.
and yeah, BWP meshes so well together that I can listen to it all the way through countless times and never get tired of it. It's my favorite metal album of all time.

Weird, MAYH is my favorite. It really, really affects me.
Everyone has different opinions about Opeth, so I wouldn't say you're wrong. The band has something for everyone so I can see if you like that album most.
The song that really blows my mind in terms of emotional greatness is "To Bid You Farewell". I don't know if I've heard a more beautiful song.

My most played Opeth songs (since a few months ago when I started using Winamp)

I don't think Mikael is on Open Car...he did backup vocals on some tracks, the mellow solo on ASBNH, but I don't think anything on Open Car. The reason I think I was listening to that song so much was because of the chorus, it has such a mellow mood.

It wouldn't sound anything like Dream Theater or LTE, the music surrounding the drumming would be totally different. Mikael seems to be good friends with Portnoy though. He doesn't even know Danny Carey. Mikael even thanks Portnoy and Dream Theater in the booklet to Ghost Reveries. And it's not like Portnoy wouldn't know what he's doing with them, he's a farily technical, prog rock/metal drummer, I'm sure whatever he does with Mikael and Wilson will be great.
Oh, I was unaware of the Ghost Reveries shoutout. That changes my opinion on things. If they do actually record an album together I'll surely be getting it as soon as it is released.

Portnoy isn't versatile though.. He's got no groove and sense of dynamics, Lopez and Gavin Harrison (PT's drummer) is in a completely different league to Portnoy
I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. While I can't stand Dream Theater as a band, I have the utmost respect for their abilities. Portnoy is capable of doing many different things on a drumset and is at a higher level than Lopez is.

Portnoys a fine drummer Knifeboy. Listen to the Awake album, he's got enough groove and dynamics to be able to work with Mike and Steve.

I've heard all of DT's catalogue, and I'd say that Mike Portnoy wouldn't be able to write anything like the drumparts for Windowpane or PT's The creator has a mastertape....

Det_Nosnip

Why do you think that?
Not being rude or anything.
Because he's a terrible drummer. His feel is completely flat, very robotic touch...I don't think I've ever heard him groove. He's been reusing the same goddam licks since Awake, and about the only thing that seems to change about him is the size of his kit. Steven would be better off just dragging Gavin Harrison with him, as he is 100x the musician that Portnoy will ever be.
This is a hopeless dream, but I'd love to hear Bobby Jarzombek play with them instead of Portnoy. That would be a musical orgasm at it's finest.
Jarzombek would be a decent choice. Sean Reinert would be awesome as well.
PT's The creator has a mastertape....
Honestly, he doesn't even have the chops for that. Some of the licks that Gavin pulls in that song are just sick.
If push came to shove and Portnoy ended up having to cover the song, I would put money on the fact that he would replace every fill Gavin played with hand/foot trades.

You forgot 46&2. :)

Wow, Reinert would be really good.
I've only heard his work with Death, and it was pretty awesome. He probably would do well with them.

Yeah, Portnoy has a ton of groove and feel. I don't get the whole OMGHEJUSTPLAYSTECHNICALSTUFFFAST.

Well, groove is a hard thing for some people to grasp.

Oh, man...that's barely a taste of what he can do. Check out Aghora's self titled album - incredible work there. Cynic - Focus was the classic album that really introduced him to the scene, and his work with Gordian Knot is fantastic.

Yeah, I've heard a few Cynic tracks (thanks to Flynn), and they were pretty decent to.
Hey, I tried this a few months ago and got like 2 responses before I was drowned out in the usual "official thread" mindless banter, but here goes...
I recently got my copy of Lamentations signed by Opeth at Scrape Records in Vancouver. It's super cool, but I can't tell whos signature is whos! Does anyone else have anything signed by Opeth that they can compare this to to help me out? Can anyone identify these scribbles?

I'm pretty sure the bottom right is Per Wiberg, but beyond that I'm lost!

Is there any Opeth fans from Sydney here?I was just wondering if they are going to be doing any in-store signing at Utopia Records?

I've heard all of DT's catalogue, and I'd say that Mike Portnoy wouldn't be able to write anything like the drumparts for Windowpane or PT's The creator has a mastertape....
The drum parts to Porcupine Tree never really stood out to me. The guy has good groove, definately, I always feel like he should change the beats up a bit more, add some simple, tasteful fills in more often, to be honest. He's a *very* solid drummer with good groove, but Portnoy... Man, if Flea can drop his happy slapping and popping and create some tasteful interesting basslines than Portnoy can tone down while still keeping things interesting.
You know, I'm not saying there arn't better drummers, but I think Portnoy would be a decent choice. Personally I think Lopez would be better because I love his style, or Danny Carey, but he's more unlikely. I think it would be more interesting to see what Portnoy can do in the situation than PT's drummer...seeing as we know what he can do with Steve anyway.

As Det mentioned on the previous page.. Gavin Harrisons drumming is far from "toned down" compared to Portnoy's drumming...

I know this has been asked a thousand times. But can you recommend an Opeth album that I should start out on?
Thanks:thumb:

Well, a good way to start would be on Still Life, methinks. It's a very strong impression of what the band is about.

Or Blackwater Park, as it is usually easier to find in stores, and still a good starter album.
Back to the drummer discussion. If Lopez joined in with Mike and Steve, it would probably sound a lot similar to stuff we've already heard (the Opeth albums with Steve on them..) or if PTs drummer joined, it would probably sound like Mikael joins PT. If Portnoy joins... well, it could be something intirely new.
They would be making a mistake to limit it to those 3 drummers though...

Yeah, but it IS Portnoy, people here are just saying they use one of these 2 instead.

Oh have they selcted him already?
I see...
Will be intresting no matter what drummer.

Doesn't look like it (http://www.utopia.com.au/sections/instores/).
I was hoping that they'd do an in store in Brisbane as well, at Skinny's Music. They did one there last time they were here. Unfortunately, stupid Coheed And Cambria is taking up all the instore spaces, by the looks of things.

So I take it you've never heard Blackest Eyes, then? Sound of Muzak? Creator Had a Mastertape? Halo?

Understatement of the century.

It's not an issue of toning down. Although Mike does overplay from time to time, it's the fact that he plays with such unbelieveable disregard for groove, feel, or finesse that bothers me about him.
Understatement of the century.
I don't think you should blow Lopez out of proportion. He's really good, but not as good as most Opeth fans think of him being.

Actually, I think it's the opposite. Most people don't know how good he really is.
I'm definitely not saying that he's bad or anything, but all I'm saying is that tons of Opeth fans like to say that he's one of the best drummers ever. I don't think he's like to 10 worthy or anything, but he's certainly a solid percussionst.

Well I was exaggerating there, but I just know that Opeth fans say that he's one of the best drummers in metal.
If you want to talk about the most talent in Opeth, let's stick to talking about Akerfeldt. :thumb: I actually think that he is one of music's best musicians right now.

I'm a huge fan of the guy's in Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment. I just wish Labrie would shut the hell up, you know? I hope that the project does get recorded, and I feel confident that Portnoy will pull of something great. I honestly think everyone here is totally underestimating his abilities. However, I think the most interesting drummer proposed so far (in this thread) is Abe Cunningham from Deftones. THAT would be perfect!

I think Lopez is by far the most technically gifted member of Opeth. The guitar playing in Opeth isn't that impressive, really. Could you clarify what you mean by "musician"?
Well we can all dream, but that would never happen. I bet Portnoy will come in and do a great job, despite what people may think.

Maybe I should have said songwriter instead.

Portnoy isn't versatile though.. He's got no groove and sense of dynamics, Lopez and Gavin Harrison (PT's drummer) is in a completely different league to Portnoy
Agreed.
