One of the coolest things about MAYH is how Mikael introduces his new growling style. For the first couple minutes of April Ethereal, he uses a higher-pitched scream, almost like on the first two albums. Then suddenly at 2:09 he emits some of the most bowel-churning vocals of his career. It brings a smile to my face whenever I think about someone hearing that for the first time.
"She faced me in awe..."
Oh yeah :thumb:
One of my favorite vocal lines on the Hearse is on the song Karma, whe he growls ''The luring eyes, you had never seen'' But he says it like ''The loooring oooys,'' I just love that so much!
MAYH has its moments, maybe not as many as other albums but still...
The main riff of April Ethereal, and the drumbeat on there...intense!
"Eerie circles upon the waters..." that line gives me shivers
DEMON! DEMON OF THE FALL is a good one
Those would be my top three.

haha, fvck yeah!
Makes me grin everytime.
To Route 1: MAYH was kinda the same for me, just give it more listens.
Once you digest the songs completely you will see how they flow and, I believe, after that many memorable moments will begin to grab you.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. The album is a very interesting transition between the old and new. I also think that it's the first time that they were actually making really heavy music.

I like the first track a lot where you just hear rain falling. It's peaceful.
In Demon of the fall, I think they could have used the line "Demon of the fall" in a better way than just saying it over and over again.

No way. I think that's really cool. Part of the reason it's such a good encore song, it's just really heavy and energetic. DEMON, DEMON OF THE FALL. \m/
So simple and brutal.
Only problem with DOTF as an encore is the climax ("Demon of the fall" riff) is halway through the song and it kind of winds down after that.

I still like Orchid a lot, don't get me wrong. I used to severly slut that album like it was a watermelon jolly rancher. I've found that I like the way the Hearse was put together. It gives me a feeling no other Opeth album can touch, but that is 3 years of listening to it, in weird places at the right time. That experience, as of now, has a tremendous amount of emotion to go along with the album. Åkerfeldt's display of prowess on the album is extraordinary and no album in any genre, when compared, will even come close to the immense impact that My Arms, Your Hearse had the time it came out, not to mention no album today stands close to the intricacy displayed on the Hearse, in all areas.

If by "winds down" you mean "gets to one of the best Opeth moments ever," then you'd be correct. :)
The ending part is one of the most emotional things that they've done, IMO.

Did anyone else notice that Opeth borrow a lot of lines from other bands that influence them? For example I noticed that the opening line of When, "Red sun rising" is most likely taken from the opening lyric of Black Sabbath's "Warning", which has the same exact line. Also on April Ethereal, "Something passed by and I went into a dream" reminded me a lot of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life", where Paul sings "Someone spoke and I went into a dream." I heard Mikael's a big fan of that song so maybe

per·plex (pr-plks)
tr.v. per·plexed, per·plex·ing, per·plex·es
1. To confuse or trouble with uncertainty or doubt.
2. To make confusedly intricate; complicate.
My guess, is he used Perplexion instead of Perplex, or Perplexing to demonstrate the outcome or make the definition of the phrase completed. ''Searching my way to (as one of being intricate) = Perplexion, ahhh ahhh ahhh''
Now, if the line was ''Searching my way to Perplexed, Perplexing, or Perplexes,'' it wouldn't make sense. Perplexion isn't a word, but I've seen it used a few times before in Poetry.
I've been listening to MAYH to death lately...I think I finally "got" it as others have. It really is an amazing album.

What's the deal with "The Apostle In Triumph" fading out and then back in at the start? Really odd.

Hey what's up everyone. Just posting to let you guys know there's an Mikael Akerfeldt interview (it's only audio) available for download on Metalreviews.com.
During the interview Mike seems to hint that the ambiguity of Lopez's situation, especially in light of the band's increasingly demanding schedule, may cause Lopez's current hiatus to become a permanent exit. I hope this is a really elaborate (and late) April Fool's Joke :/.

And no, lots of people hate Opeth. I'm starting to see a trend by the more "elite" metal heads, that goes something like this "Opeth sucks! there are better bands!". It's really quite stupid, as I believe they just don't understand Opeth, or are just trying to be unique. I think it's more the later.

I was just looking at your sputnik ratings of Metallica and I just got the vibe that you didn't think much of them. Never mind then. Yeah, I'm strictly a pre-black album Metallica fan.
They, along with Slipknot (sadly), were the reasons that I got into metal so I can't stop liking them.

Yeah, that Dargon thread awhile back brought all that to my attention. I agree.. either they already have a preconcieved notion about what kind of music Opeth is (artsy, pseudo-intellectual drivel), or they're just too stubborn and impatient to give them a decent listen.
Opeth riffs have always been difficult for me to do. They're just plain different from normal metal riffs and I've yet to get used to their style of playing.

If you like Emperor, you should try Peccatum. Formed from one of the former members of Emperor and his wife. It's really dark, dark music. It's in a sort of avant garde, prog metal style. Really good stuff.

A few Akerfeldt quotes:
"It's because of you that we came all the way over from Sweden in the first place, so if you want us to come back, we'll come back. If you don't want us to come back, we'll come back."
"So who saw us at the steakhouse the other night?"

"Who saw us at the steakhouse the other night and just ate steak the entire time?"
*One singular, drunken yell*

Is it just me or is the tone for "Ending Credits" in the studio version is pathetic compared to the live, "Lamentations" version?

I thought it was pretty funny when Mikael was making fun of Mendez' horizontal headbanging

Totally. Mike's Les Paul tone is so thick sounding on Lamentations. I love it.
And the way Mike did the "Swedish lessons" was perfect. He did the meatball one first, which got a nice laugh from the crowd for sheer randomness. Then after the crowd repeated back the second phrase he just said what it meant really matter-of-factly.

Oh yeah! The sunburst... he never records with Les Paul though.

I think Mike uses PRS primarily while Peter tends to favor the Les Paul. I could be wrong though.

He may use a Les Paul live on a few songs, but I know he uses PRS in the studio for electric and Martin Acoustics.
Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 - Electric
Paul Reed Smith CE 24 - Electric
Martin 000-16GT - Acoustic
Martin 000-28 - Acoustic
Amalio Burguet 2AM -Classical

So, I was thinking earlier today: Mikael has kids, and I bet that discipline is never a problem in the Akerfeldt household. I mean, seriously...can you imagine standing up to that?
Mike: Time for bed, son...go to your room.
Son: Oh, please Papa! Can't I stay just a little longer?
Mike: Son...
Son: Pleeeaaaasseee!!
Mike: GOOOWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRR TOOOOOOOOOOO YOUWWRRR RWWWOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!
Son:

Well I seriously doubt he'd come to MX and do it:upset:
It'd probably be on the official opeth forums at www.ultimatemetal.com
He used to post there under his real name. Mendez used to post there too.
The guys in Novembers Doom usually post alot in there forums:thumb:
I wish Opeth did that frequently

Melinda: ''Dad, why did you name me Melinda?''
Mikael: ''I named you after a fictional character on my Still Life concept album.''
Melinda: ''So what does the second verse of Serenity Painted Death mean?''
Mikael: ''What do you mean 'what does it mean?'
Melinda: ''Well it says here; 'Ripped from my embrace, Melinda reflected in shafts, Red line round her neck, Met the earth in silence.''
Mikael: ''Oh, that's when Melinda dies.''
Melinda: '' ... so when you wrote 'the noose is tied' on White Cluster, what does that mean?''
Mikael: ''..."

I would be quite honored to be named after a figure in a story my dad came up with :)
I would too, especially if it was an Opeth album.
It would be kind of creepy though, considering what happens to Melinda in the story.

No actually it's a very old ritual prepared and the whole staging is pretty serious and interesting.
I'm talking about the play performed in.. eh, forgot the city.
But if you're talking about the drunk ****s that nail themseleves to the crosses and beat themselves with whips and/or sticks. Yeah they are very wrong.
