Well, maybe it's around 3 then...still freaking long.

However, the heavy part is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Layered parts rule.

All ages shows suck. You're never sure if the women at it are legal. Every time a girl at one of those talks to me, I hear sirens in my head and visions of jail time. This is especially true at goth, punk and metal concerts where the make up obscures age a lot of the time.

You wouldn't be saying that if you were 15.

See, it all works out for me. It's legal no matter the age. :naughty:

It's quite fun to "accidentally" assrape people at concerts too, when you're all packed in like that. Just gotta position yourself behind a good looking girl.

I think the weakest point of Blackwater Park is...uuuhhh...

I really don't know. Maybe Harvest, although that song still rocks.

Oh, at Opeth, we also got the first 5 seconds of The Funeral Portrait and some Kenny Rogers and Judas Priest.

Harvest? I love that song to death, and I don't think that it's a weak point in the least. I'm going to have to go with the majority of the Opeth fans and say that Dirge for November is the weakest, even though it is still a good song. It would be better if it wasn't as long as it is. It just drags on too much for my tastes.

I love Funeral Portrait, it's nice and heavy throughout which is something that the album really needed after the soft middle part of the eight tracks. It was nice to return back to Opeth's brutal side after hearing the gentle pieces.

But still, The Leper Affinity owns every other metal song on the planet.

Uh uh... Funeral Portrait > Dirge in boreness.

Both have one or two interesting riffs and what not, but to be quiet honest, Funeral seems much more boring than Dirge. At least Dirge has the gay acoustic start, which is a good thing, I suppose.

So the "gay" acoustic start is a good thing? Usually gay is a derogatory term around here, but whatever.

So...which Opeth album is everyone's least favorite? Mine is My Arms, Your Hearse.

There's not really a long soft section before TFP...BWP is extremely weighted toward heaviness, I'm not sure why people point it out as being more balanced.

Leper Affinity - all heavy except a brief part in the middle and a minute of piano at the end
Bleak -all heavy except a fairly short acoustic bit in the middle
Harvest - all soft
TDF - There isn't that much acoustic playing and even including the soft electric parts, it's still mainly heavy.
Dirge - except for the intro and a little bit more, it's almost all heavy.
TFP - same
Patterns in the Ivy - 2 minutes of acoustic
BWP - 3 minutes of acoustic, 9 minutes heavy

I was just wondering, then, why people always say BWP is one of the more balanced albums. Still Life, Morningrise, and Gr are all MUCH more balanced.

Least favorite album is either Orchid or GR.

I was going to edit, by saying "gay" as in "out-of-tune, silly, not very good" piece of introduction, which a vast majority of people in this thread don't seem to enjoy. So I think that pretty much explains it. I guess.

Despite Ghost Reveries being not so good, I think I'd choose Deliverance, because it's not as consistent as the other albums.

Consistent as in not the best singing, not the best songwriting, but some interesting riffage.

The middle acoustic-soft section after the first verse is very different from what it's been building up to that point. That makes it balanced.

Being "old school" and "hardcore" is stupid if you ask me. Their songwriting wasn't at their best by then, and Mikael's vocals weren't nearly as good as they are now. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's better.

It's stupid to have a band that you love, and have loved since the beginning? Alright then. Lot's of people will argue that the songwriting was near it's peak, since the songs are all master peices in there own way. Wow, that's crazy. I love My Arms, Your Hearse. That is probably the most complex album Opeth have ever recorded, both musically and lyrically, and they didn't even have a bass player at the time! That album is slowly crawling up my favorites list, mainly because of it's beautiful songwriting and very well put together riffs that complete my favorite concept album.

Well I like some raw music every now and then, but I just find myself to like Opeth's later albums more, especially Blackwater Park, Still Life, and Damnation. Those would be my three favorites and by then they had truly perfected their sound, songwriting, and potential as a band.

Mikael hates TNATSW primarily because he wrote it after his grandfather died and he doesn't want to bring back the memories and emotions of that time period. It's astonishing that they played it at the NYC show last week

From what I've heard, he didn't say much about it (if anything at all), he either just introduced it with a standard "this is off Morningrise, it's called The Night and the Silent Water" speech or he didn't say anything at all. That's the first time they've ever played it live.

yep. :D

On a related note, I was thinkingabout painting the cover from Morningrise for my art class, but the shadows and overall drawing were going to be a bitch to draw. Plus my teacher thinks it's too gothic.

I'll have to go with Dali. The artist, not his art.

Oh god that was an amazing setlist, every song captivated me (despite my stomach condition causing me to almost pass out). As far as I know, everything was spot-on, and they were just as tight as they were in the DVD. Mikael's humor was great, he really had the crowd going ("**** FLOWERS?"). I think he made us say "I like meatballs" and "I like to suck my ****" or something like that. Really refreshing after getting flipped off repeatedly by DevilDriver.

The crowd wasn't too bad either, I just had to fight a little bit to stay in place. One good thing DD did was start that stupid movement during their last song that allowed me to push through about 30 feet or so to the fifth row of bodies, otherwise DD was kind of annoying (someone I brought with said he didn't like DT but loved DD....I didn't say a word, just drove a little faster). DT did play a short set though, so I was a little disappointed. I was going to shake their hands but I figured they didn't want to be bothered, especially with all the chicks around them.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of people will band together to stop or remove somebody from the crowd that acts like a fool. One guy almost started a fight with me until people swarmed around him.

As we were standing in line at around 4:15pm Mikael walked out of a side door to First Avenue and the dude next to me went to shake his hand, Mikael said ''I have **** on my hands'' but he shook it anyways. It all happened so fast I didn't realize it was Akerfeldt until he was in the tour bus. Then, like 15 minutes later, Peter walked out, looked at us smiled and went in the bus as well. It was pretty cool, though I missed the handshake again...

Over all the show was amazing, DT and DevilDriver were great as well. DevilDriver actually stole the show in terms of moshing. That place was almost falling over when they were on stage. Opeth's setlist wasn't bad, again they didn't play Demon Of The Fall, and they almost played Black Rose Immortal. Right before The Drapery Falls, Mikael said ''This is Black Rose Immortal'' and the place went nuts, then he laughed and said, ''Just Kidding, this next song is off of our Blackwater Park album, The Drapery Falls...'' Mikael was a crackup the entire time, very good show.

Here's the setlist in order.

Ghost Of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
The Baying Of The Hounds
Closure
Under The Weeping Moon
The Grand Conjuration
The Drapery Falls
Deliverance (Encore)

Mikael WAS goddamn hilarious.

Good moments:

Somebody yells, "Give me your guitar!" He holds it over the audience, JUST out of reach.

Backdrop = Ghost Reveries. "See that logo? It's pretty ****ing evil. Anybody know where that's from? Tis from our new album...which is ALSO pretty ****ing evil."

"I don't like corpsepaint...I found out it makes me look like a whore."

However, I still think Townsend stole the show with comedy.

Why did he try and start a fight with you?

He pushed everyone out of his way instead of asking, so I shoved him away from me. Then he started some weird **** next to me, like an overexaggerated headbang that took up a lot of space. I just stood there with my arms crossed, planting my feet and keeping my elbows in place. Eventually he started pushing on people, trying to get them to mosh, but the group I was around really didn't want to have anything to do with that. Only thing I did was move over more and become more rigid so he'd have less space (and thus he kept hitting me and getting caught on me, it wasn't like I was talking trash or punching him). Apparently he was pissed, as my friend alerted me, but then two tall guys that came for Opeth walked over to each side of him, and he stopped.

That's terrible, guys like that should just stay in front of their bathroom mirrors. At the concert I went to, there was this dude with exceptionally bad breath standing behind me, and every time he yelled "Opeth", I would have to clench my teeth to keep nausea down. I was eventually forced to move, but I lost a really good view of the stage. I wish people would bathe/brush before coming to concerts.

I was at the Milwaukee show that Moses and Blizzink were at too. Dark Tranquillity were amazing. I'd forgotten how awesome the chorus of Punish My Heaven is. After they were done Mikael Stanne jumped down and shook the hands of the people in the front row (me).

DevilDriver... **** DevilDriver. I'd never heard them before the show, but I found their music to be kinda mindless. Just a series of heavy songs without focus trying to get the crowd to mosh.

Opeth were brilliant. Aside from one harmony vocal spot that Per couldn't quite find his note on, everything was perfect. Akerfeldt is a really funny guy on stage, teaching the entire crowd to say "I want some meatballs today" and "I want to suck my own penis" in Swedish. I actually managed to get my phone out to take pictures of Mike, Peter, and Martin too. And I caught one of Peter's picks.

All in all the most amazing concert I've ever been to. Two days later and my ribs are still wicked sore.

Yeah, I still only have the two songs released, but they're so good. I've been listening to Skywards a lot to fill the void.

I kind of realized recently that I have a deep love affair with Orchid. It's impossible not to. The band has something for every type of music fan. I've showed the band to many of my friends and most of them are not metal fans in any way. Since I'm a band geek (and most of my friends are too), they know to respect the band for their high level of musical proficiency.

The only reason that people say that Opeth are untr00 is because they've recently gained a high level of popularity and exposure. As soon as something becomes well known in the metal scene most idiots start to say that it isn't cool anymore, even though the band still continues to pump out some of the world's greatest albums at the moment.

I've come to realize that the reviewers on metal archives are ****ing idiots. I don't listen to a word they say anymore. I only contribute my own reviews to adjust the average rating for an album to what I think it should be.

I was between Mikael and Peter too, right on the rail but not right in the beginning. Eventually I got onto the rail a little before Opeth started. Was the guy you were with about 6'3" and wasn't standing up straight the whole time?

Also there was a chick trying to go through my pockets and some guy behind me said the same thing except he almost got into a fight over it.
I also think she was a DD fan, which is not surprising.
