Hey Flynn, I know this is old as hell, but this post interested me:

Why the M(m?)etallica hate?

I can't remember that post, It was probably when I first started posting here and just posted my thoughts to let people know how I felt about them, I don't know. What does it matter though? I hang around people that listen to Rap and say they can't stand Opeth, laugh at their music because it's not for them. I respect that because they're into their own mind-set. I have never tried to steer them off of what they like, never once tried to prove (elitism) Opeth's music is far better then anything in their CD collection or anything they've ever heard. I don't pry. But I do give examples.

I don't expect them or anyone else to automattically get into my kind of music because I think it's better then what they listen to, even though our tastes are night and day. I don't care who hates what, who likes what, etc etc...Everyone has their own opinions on all kinds of different things...to each his own. I can't stand Metallica. < Period. I grew up with that music, and yes I definitely respect them a lot for what they've achieved in their life in the Metal scene, yet I still have my reasons why I despise that band.

I have no idea what ignited the fire in my head to post that, but I have to stand by it. To be fair, I will say it was an inappropriate post.

I agree. I have many friends who listen to rap or pop punk or any other genre besides metal. I dont really care. It would be great if we all listened to metal, but then we wouldnt be unique.

I wish i could have went to that Opeth show that Cain went to.

I'm the same way. In my environment, metal is an extreme minority among the people who listen to music (which is virtually everyone). I'm the complete opposite of 99% of the people I deal with daily, but I don't like to be condescending or elitistic towards their taste. Opeth or any metal band is not factually better than any rap or pop, it all comes down to personal preference. I do try to expose people to metal when I can though, because I think the music is much better than what the mainstream gives it credit for. I'll give recommendations and CD's for people to listen to, but I don't criticize anyone who says metal isn't for them or doesn't like what I recommend.

For some reason I always envisioned metalheads to be nicer guys. Sure, you can be a badass. Listen to the most extreme music ever written, walk around in black with bullet belts and long hair, flaunting some obscure band on your shirt. I love the metal image. But when people expect metal guys to be very cold, inconsiderate people I like to prove them wrong. No negative behavior should be permanently attached to a genre of music. It's always funny to surprise people by dressing like a stereotypical metalhead and then turning out to be a very polite person.

We've all had those days though. You look back on old posts and wonder what the hell you were thinking. If I could cover up my past here I think I would get a lot more respect from other users, haha.

I've found that alot of metalheads tend to be pretty cool and laid back, especially those who are also musicians. One theory is that the music serves as an effective outlet for alot of the kinds of thoughts and emotions that many people repress or express in destructive ways. I do know that nothing calms me down when I'm upset or cheers me up when I'm depressed like a good ole dose of heavy metal.

There are plenty that are laid back, but for every one of those there's an anal-retentive elitist :\

Although the elitists are probably disproportionately represented on MX.

I just busted out Orchid again last night. Apostle is probably my favorite song on there, but for the most part when I listen to it all I can think about it how it makes me want to listen to Morningrise...the albums are so different it's like Morningrise is the album by a great band and Orchid is a bunch of amateurs trying to rip them off. I'm so glad BRI ended up on Morningrise instead of Orchid, the changes that took place between those albums were only good.
(sorry Flynn :\ )

Haha grammer nazy.

Anyhow, on the metalhead department... I think I've turned into a nicer person since I got into the more... brutal shades of music, say metal, say Rock. Aside from a number of facts and situations I don't really think is necessary to expose at the moment, I had to change my mind on how I treat people and how I am portrayed. After all, all I have is the way others see me, and the way I treat others is the way I'll be treated.

However, I don't try to be an elitist pig in music terms. Hell, I don't even bring up the music subject when I'm with my friends, because I know they aren't really into it, so I guess my "super wide taste in music" helps a lot, since I listen to dance, electronica, hip hop and several other genres I wouldn't consider to listen on my own, yet I listen to them to have fun.

But yes, metalheads are definitely viewed as weirdos. Stereotypes, me supposes.

eh... and yeah Opeth... eh... I still have a lot to DL... but I'd prefer stop downloading and buy more albums. Probably in the summer or something.

I now see why people consider Opeth the greatest band on Earth. Still not there in my book, but it's in my top 10.

Oh, by the way, anybody who goes to the concert, be prepared for a night of comedy and kickass music.

Setlist (somewhat in order...):
Ghost Of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
Baying Of The Hounds
Under A Weeping Moon
Closure
The Grand Conjuration
The Drapery Falls
Deliverance (encore)

Setlist still leaves something to be desired though...

GR has really been growing on me as of late. I've not been listening to much of Damnation and more of the heavier stuff.

I think it's not that Opeth is the "best band in the world". I think the most people(fans of all genres) can all enjoy Opeth and agree on that.

I heard (vague memory) that they were on an Opeth shirt?

All I wish to do is to give myself greater understanding as to why it is there and what it means.

Oh God, after pit one day, my friend and I plugged an amp into an outlet out in the hall and started playing Master's Apprentices on guitar and bass. I started singing right as an Asian chick walked by.

Its funny to do that. Play on your metalhead status.
Yeah because everyone at school (and everyones friends at this grade level) esepically my close mates think its funny me as a metalhead I sometimes joke and play on it. Like a girls mucks around and says she wants to get pissed and listen to metal with me one night (I can't wait :D). Usually for any bands, the touring companies try and hit different places for each leg. Example: They hit Philly on the first NA leg, they go to Pittsburg on the second. NIN hit Philly on the first With Teeth Tour NA leg, now they're going to Erie and they're coming to Atlantic City (which I can't go to because it sold out in 8 damn minutes)

True that. But someone said something about GR and Tool being similar, I don't see it, if there was Tool influence there, the album would probably have been better IMO. Tool also don't use keyboards a whole lot, unlike Opeth on GR. But maybe some of the guitar rhythm stuff... like that one riff in Ghost of Perdition being similar to The Grudge.

Yes, I agree completely. I used to think that album was out of touch, but I kinda like Ghost Reveries now. The crazy thing about me and music is, it reminds me of certan places, visions I've seen while listening to a certain song. I rarely get into a song and have total emotions for it on the first few listens, it takes a long time and a lot of breaks to listen to a song and think of memories I've had while listening to it before, sometimes years ago. Ghost Reveries reminds me of last year before I started working at Certified, all good memories.

I know what you mean. The music that really stays with me is never the stuff I get into as soon as I hear it - it's the stuff that I don't like at first but gradually get into over time. I love that part so much it jsut sounds so cool. I've wanted to make a post about that part but i didn't think anyone would know what i was talking about. I didn't think of putting the time where the part was. The part where the bass is bending or sliding is really cool too.

I only learned both parts for a couple of the riffs, no point unless i can play them both at the sime time (which is impossible). One of my favs is this:

I don't think they are allowed to with all the record label changing and stuff... but many bands have along the shirts, the pins and the stickers some albums.

On a related note, "Remember Tomorrow" cover is interesting... but the vocals are a bit... I don't know. They aren't really amazing.

Toaster
03-01-2006, 08:49 PM
Setlist (somewhat in order...):
Ghost Of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
Baying Of The Hounds
Under A Weeping Moon
Closure
The Grand Conjuration
The Drapery Falls
Deliverance (encore)

That, plus Deep Purple's "Soldier of Fortune". Heh, right before TGC someone in the audience threw Mikael A. this necklace with an inverted cross on it.. Akerfeldt was saying how the song was all about "hot chicks, toilets, snakes, and muscular masked men".

Shattered_Future

We got something about how everybody should admire the hotness of the loose moraled nurse in bed.

I will say, that song blew me away live. It's decent (if a bit repetitive) normally, but that was one of the best performances of the night, I thought.

Darkness

I'm really hoping for a bit of a change in the setlist.

But those comments on TGC are pretty funny. I honestly wouldn't mind if they cut TGC, Deliverance, and Demon of the Fall for some other of there more famous songs (BWP!). I've seen those live here already, and it wouldn't be terrible if they cut them out for something else...
