haha , just to let you know, I apologize for the previous pages on this thread. My brother logged on because I was making fun of his precious loser band (won't say) He changed my avater to some neon crap. That wasn't me! He's done that to me in here before. He put a picture of some chick as my avatar and tried saying it was me a while back. It's all FALSE!

I've been listening to Still Life a lot lately, just starting to get more into MAYH. I love Credence so much. The end of that song puts me into a trance. That acoustic riff along with solo repeated leads into Karma so abrupt. I love it.

Still Life is probably my favorite... that or My Arms, Your Hearse... after my first listens to Blackwater Park and Still Life (I got them both the same day) Blackwater Park was definately my favorite... but then it wore off... it's amazing at first, but Still Life is more timeless.... both kick *** though... every Opeth album does.

I'm seeing Opeth live in NYC on February 23rd, at Town Hall. **** yeah!!
Here's the really interesting thing. The NYC show is one of three concerts in the U.S. that are listed as "An Evening With Opeth". There's no opening band, and the setlist is extended to chronologically cover songs from Orchid to Ghost Reveries.
Here's what the Opeth site says about it:
"Chronology MCMXCIV - MMV A live observation by Opeth"
Yes folks, that is the "title" for three exclusive gigs scheduled for NYC's Town hall centre (23/2), Chicago's House of blues (2/3) and LA's Wiltern theatre (14/3). These special seated events will consist of a chronologically played setlist, starting with music from the very first record "Orchid" and ending with vibes from the latest opus "Ghost reveries". These extended sets are exclusive to the three dates and there won't be any support bands on these nights. A good advice is to get your tickets quick as these are bound to sell out fast! Opeth and crew will also bring in extra production and screens in order to try and make this the ultimate Opeth live experience! The band promise a very varied setlist and songs never ever played before live! The setlist boasts no less than 4 songs that never before have been played on American soil and several others that haven't been played for years!

Not until I noticed that they were doing that today, so I went to the tixxartistarena thingy, just like last time, and discover that the New York show special presale is SOLD OUT. It's like the only one too.
I'm debating sneaking off to Connecticut to see them at the Webster Theatre that Thursday, even though I have class, but reasons against that are as follows:
1.) I love Connecticut, and it's close by, and it's home, but even so the liklihood of me successfully making it there just for a show would be very slim.
2.) My chances of finding another Opeth fan to go with that I'm friends with, though I know a few at home, are nevertheless quite slim, due to college locations and/or high school school night.
3.) No extended setlist, which means no songs from Morningrise or Orchid. :(

Go alone man. I couldn't find anyone to go to Ozzfest 4 with me, so I went alone, met some cool people. I'm glad I went, was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Why are they only playing that setlist in New York? It must be a DVD recording...which would be awesome when it comes out, if that's true. But it seems odd they'd only play that for one show.

01-26-2006, 09:14 PM
They're playing two or three shows with the extended setlist (NY, LA and one more I think). We (the people at the official Opeth forums) are hoping that it's recorded for a DVD. The reason why they couldn't release anything pre-BWP on Lamentations was because Music For Nations didn't want to try and get rights to the songs pre-BWP from the various labels that the albums are on, because they felt it was a waste of money or something like that.
Now that Opeth're on Roadrunner, RR is more likely to pick up the rights for the songs that they play if they choose to record one of the "Evening With..." shows for a DVD.

if this makes any sense, the way i see it is that the first two have more riff/"twin guitar harmony" based songs that don't repeat any riffs, and the rest .. i dont know how to describe the rest, i guess they have more structure.

They realised that tons of bands around their area were making music like what they were doing and decided to change their sound. I mean, they'd been fans of Iron Maiden and such and loved the twin guitar stuff, but apparently Mikael got sick of it after a while. Thus; he let his other influences take over.
He wanted to use the weird chords, the really dissonant, evil sounding stuff because he felt it was more uncharted territory, and not as many other bands dealt with that sort of stuff at the time.
Yeah, Gothenburg metal hit and used the harmony riff thing to death. They weren't progressive, but bands like Dark Tranquillity were writing similar riffs so Mikeal took the band in a different direction.
Ironic that DT are opening for Opeth now.

Just goes to show that if you do something different, and do it well, you'll succeed above your peers.
Opeth are friends with some of the Gothenburg bands anyway, In Flames, as well, for example. I'd imagine they still listen to some of that sort of stuff but just didn't want to take their music in that direction anymore.

I didn't say there was a huge simularity. There is quite some simularity mind you, they both played melodic, classical sounding metal with harmonised guitars, death vocals and acoustics thrown in, both even experimented with string-like sounds in their music. I said they were peers, meaning they were "extreme" metal bands from around the same time and a similar area.

One Mikael thing that I want to hear is Crimson by Edge of Sanity: as Dan Swano actually had a large hand in writing the clean vocal melodies on Morningrise (Black Rose Immortal features a lot of Swano-penned melodies and To Bid You Farewell has guest vocals by him during the heavy section I believe), and Mikael apparently does some awesome death screams on that album (which is supposed to be like the greatest death concept album ever anyway), I'd be interested in picking it up.
Swano also worked on Bloodbath's Resurrection Through Carnage (with Akerfeldt on vocals) and Nightmares Made Flesh.
Do you know of anything else worth picking up by Edge of Sanity? I'm interested.

Thanks for the help, but I know a sh¡t load of Opeth at the moment, anyhow. :)
I have GR and Lamentations, and listened to pretty much all of their discography, and I still find Still Life as intriguing. Anyhow, I prefer further riffage, which is less... high, I suppose. The chords used, probably.
Anyhow, I'm still watching Lamentations and laughing at the silly stuff they say. And the awesome Closure Version.

Sometimes bands just play songs faster live, like Lamb of God with As The Palaces Burn on Killadelphia.

That's what I'm thinking.
Also, completely off topic In Flames tends to play every song faster live.
Is it really that hard to just hit "stop" on your CD player? :p
Actually, yeah...well not really, but after an album like Morningrise, you just want to sit there and absorb that last vibe from the end of the album instead of spending the last moments of the song tensing up to hit stop the second the music ends.
I burned the original five songs to a disc, but I want to eventually actually own all the Opeth albums, that's why.

It's strange I can hear a ghost note right after the last line of To Bid You Farewell for a long time after the song stops...that last guitar note lingers in my head always, it's beautiful.

I'd have to compare which I'm too lazy to do now. It seems maybe a litte faster.
I watched Lamentations last night.
The best live DVD/video I've ever watched.
You watch him sing so beautifully on the first half.
Then these brutal growls on the second set.
If you closed your eyes... I doubt you'd think it was the same singer.

Orchid, what a story I have to tell. I usually go to the local music store here in town and almost every time I go there with a certain band in mind, I have to order what I want. I had recently bought Blackwater Park and wanted to further my Opeth collection so I decided to go take a glance at what else they had. The only CD they had there by Opeth was Orchid, I picked it up, glanced at the back to see the song titles and never let it go the entire time I surfed the rack. I picked up maybe 4 or 5 others, but only left with Orchid. I listened to that CD for 3 weeks straight in my car, never changed the CD and I have many! Orchid seriously had a huge impact on how I see music today, especially how I write it. Orchid is one of the best CDs I've ever bought and hate to think what my taste would be without buying it on that particular day.
Have I mentioned how ****ing lucky you are for living in Stockholm? :upset:
Do you ever run into any awesome bands?
I think of myself as being extremely lucky:)
Let's see... I have actually met both Martin Lopez and Mikael Åkerfeldt (but not at the same time, though). This running into bands doesn't happen alot, but it does happen, I usually run into Swedish actors and actresses (I'm not fan of Swedish movies, most of them suck).

A brief and maybe somewhat odd "support show" will be given by Ballet Deviare in New York on the 23rd of february. The performance is called "...And The Devil Knows Why" and they will be dancing to Opeths track "Deliverance".
Ballet Deviare
Title of work- "...And The Devil Knows Why"
Choreographer- Laura Kowalewski
Composer-Opeth, "Deliverance"
Dancers- Samantha Koetsier, Shannon Plumstead, Erika Sutter, and Julia Welsh
New York City Premiere-December 18th, 2004
Company Statement:
The visceral fusion of two seemingly total opposites. A maelstrom of a marriage between the beauty and grace of ballet, and the force and brutality of metal. Bringing high art and extreme music together. Incorporated in November of 2003, Ballet Deviare is a non-profit contemporary ballet company residing in New York City. Ballet Deviare strives to reach a vast audience ranging from balletomanes to those who have never been exposed to the art of ballet. Deviating from what is expected within the norm of ballet companies (which is how the name of the company came into being), Ballet Deviare has harnessed an eclectic audience ranging from dance connoisseurs to those individuals who have never attended a ballet performance.
Ballet Deviare's choreographic projects entail the merging of what may appear at first glance to be complete opposites, the beauty and grace of ballet combined with the power and force of metal music. Not for the faint of heart, Kowalewski's choreographic works range from adagio inspired movements invoked by the darkened melodies of doom, to petit allegro propelled by the double base drums and thunderous riffs of death metal and grind.

It's the first one I heard, and it probably amazed me the most out of any Opeth album because of that. The Funeral Portrait is actually pretty cool, the vocals in particular are great. The riffs are somewhat uninspired though, I'll admit.
Blackwater Park is good, but overrated. It suffers from some mediocre parts toward the middle (some of TDF, as well as a lot of Dirge and Portrait) but the beginning few songs rule and the closer is one of Opeth's best songs ever, so I think that's why people come away raving about it. I think Still Life is a much more consistent and solid album, same with Morningrise and even MAYH.

I pretty much agree with everything you said there but I just don't get what's so amazing about Morningrise. The only song that really amazes me on the album is To Bid You Farewell.
Let's face it though... With only 5 songs on Morningrise you can see why te album as a whole is rated so highly. The more songs you have on an album, the more filler you have...
If all Opeth albums had 5 songs on them, then they'd have the best metal discography ever.

Morningrise is the same length as other Opeth albums (in fact longer than a lot of them). The reason it has 5 songs is because they're so long. (all are over 10 minutes and one is 20 minutes)

i would like bleak (some parts of it were excellent) but it was ruined by those lame whiney vocals...whoever the hell sings them (it sure doesnt sound like mikael, at least i hope not).

Crap? Not at all. Although I'll agree SW's vocals work for PT but not Opeth.

Please define whiney.

Damn right, those vocals are incredible. The synergy between the two is perfect during that part.

I agree that Wilson's vocals are whiny and annoying, but they don't even come close to ruining the song.

I'm not sure I ever like Wilson's vocals that much. They don't stand out to me. It's not like they could ever ruin a song but I don't think they'll ever be the one thing I listen for in PT. Of course he does do wonderful vocal orchestration which I do admire, however his voice isn't active enough for me.
You guys have got to be kidding. The section where Wilson comes in is absolutely the best part of the song and when they're both harmonizing it's some of the best melodic sections Opeth have ever done.
Harvest as well has some great harmonization between Akerfeldt and Wilson.
Toaster

I never said the harmonizing sounded bad. Alone however, he just sounds too plain and droning. It's hard to explain.. to me it almost sounds like Wilson is just reciting the lyrics (as opposed to putting some feeling behind them).
I get the complete opposite feeling. Wilson's part really charges the song with the energy it needs. That part is captivating for me. Then again, I'm a PT fanboy.

When my computer crashed all my music files got lost. I'm back to 10 gigs of music but the only Opeth I have is Ghost Reveries, so I can't go back and review that section of Steven Wilsons vocals... It sucks.
I'd send BWP to you, but it seems that I remember that your AIM sucks at sending/receiving files.

Weak or disadvantaged?
When you lend your whole album collection to a freind, he loses it, then your computer's harddrive crashes, is that weak?

That's different, clearly.
On the other hand, every Rush album I owned I lost while on a vacation and I still haven't amassed the previous level. I refuse to do file-sharing on an album basis...for bands I REALLY REALLY like I tend to not want to and won't support it. It just depends on your point of view. I think that it's perfectly fine if you've already spent the money and are simply replacing that which is lost.

The vocals in Bleak are good. I don't think they sound out of place at all, nor are they particulary whiney. There's thousands of singers with more whiney voices than Steven Wilson. I like some PT, but I agree his voice can come across as bland; just, not on that song at all.
On another note; the harmonies on BWP (album) are great, mostly down to Steve, i'm sure. Like on The Drapery Falls "Lapse into the ways of misery", etc.

Ah yes, the mastery of Mr. Wilson. The Lamentations DVD is quite educational on his work, and I suppose it was very similar to BWP.
Anyhow, Bleak is a tough song to sing because it's a medium term pitch voice, I mean, the clean vocals, you know, so I have to force my voice big time on that.
Overall, it's a fun, easy song to play.

I think Tool probably gets mentioned because even though there may not be much that is similar musically, there is a similar style in taking a form of music and taking it to a whole new level, to the point of being less a metal/rock act, and more of an art. imo.
I think he means Reverie/Harlequin Forest.
But the title most likely to be confused with Ghost Reveries would be Ghost of Perdition.
