You're confusing me, if you play patterns in the ivy II without a capo, surely you can play still day beneath the sun without a capo?

You can if you tune up. Or have extremely long fingers, if you want to play it correctly, in key, as you say.

Yeah, but he already mentioned he isn't playing patterns in the ivy II in the right key.. So I can't see what's stopping him

No, I lost mine when I moved, I still have to get a new one. I miss it. I tried playing it without one and it sounds like crap.

My fave instrumental is Reverie, very closely followed by For Absent Friends. Reverie is so soooooothing *drifts off*.

Black Rose Immortal and To Bid You Farewell gave me goosebumps the first time I listened to them both. Brilliant songs. The rest of the album I can take or leave as they're obviously lacking Mikael's clean vocals, really cool riffs though.

I think the album turned out well. There's a reason why To Bid You Farewell is so beautiful, the concept for Morningrise was not to over-do the clean vocals, then at the end of the album, it becomes rewarding. :)

Well; I just don't really think he was confident in his voice as much back then, and especially not confident that clean vocals would go over well with death metal fans.

That said, I think those songs could have been almost perfect with clean vocals in them as well as death ones. I really like the guitar style, the songs just feel... incomplete, for Opeth.

hmm, that's crazy. I feel that Morningrise had to be Mikaels most emotional album. I don't think his confidence could have reached a higher level.

I'm pretty sure he's stated that he didn't like his voice back then. From a technical standpoint, I see why, but for emotion, which you said, it's some of his best.

I meant his singing voice, not his growling voice, if you were under that misconception.

I honestly think if he was more confident in it back then, he would have used it more like he has done through much of Opeth's carear. Anyway, if he was confident in it, he shouldn't have been, though it sounds perfect on To Bid You Farewell and Black Rose Immortal, it was still pretty weak. (Fit's the tracks perfectly, as I say) Don't get me wrong, I love Morningrise for those tracks alone, which is half the album, plus the rest, which has awesome riffs, but overall half the album I feel is lacking something of Opeth's sound.

Edit: The Night and the Silent water is probably my favourite of the three other tracks. I think I read it was written about his Grandad dying, an older relative, anyway, and I don't think they've ever played it live for that very reason.

FYE in my town hardly has any metal anymore. Whenever I go in there and want something, I always end up ordering it. And when I do order it, the retard behind the counter mocks the band name, or the album art etc etc. Yeah, he needs to just go die somewhere.

There used to be one full rack, like 30 feet long just for metal/hard rock. Now it's almost all Rap. Was reading the local Vancouver newspaper (The Province) the other day, and they were listing the top 10 concerts (in Vancouver) and albums of the year. Strangely enough, Opeth made it to both lists.. I don't disagree with it, I'm a huge opeth fan and loved the concert and GR, just strange that a death metal band is even mentioned in a mainstream newspaper like The Province, kinda cool..

Never buy Opeth CDs in stores. All the ones I've seen are 18-19-20 dollars, and that's only BWP, D&D, and tons of GR, plus occasionally Morningrise. On the other hand, I got Still Life NEW on Amazon.com for 11 dollars, shipping included.

I just can't figure out why their CDs are so expensive. They aren't some super-well-known band, and usually lesser known bands go for cheap. For example, all Dredg albums are around 10 bucks in these same stores.

In a lot of ways, they're all really close. I just think that the top two showcase their switching between beautiful and heavy the best and have the best songwriting. Damnation has excellent songwriting, but only shows a more limited version of their sound and the other albums, I feel, are slightly more flawed. This order could change, and there isn't much in it between albums really. I find the the older albums have better or more beautiful riffs in general, though the songwriting I don't feel is always as good or consistant. I have numerous favourite Opeth songs spread across the top 6 albums; quite impressive for a death metal band.

From the albums I have:

Still Life ~ This overall shows their best songwriting and I think that Mikaels vocasl sre amazing here. All the songs are great and I find it's impossible to pick a faveourite. I love the guitar work here, it seems to be their most technical to date.

Blackwater Park ~ Simular sound to Still Life but a lot darker, I think The Funeral Portrait is a bit weak where as I like all the songs on Still Life the same.

Ghost Reveries ~ A very diverse album overall showing all areas of Opeth. The clean sections on great and the heavy sections are some of the most brutal they have recorded yet it just doesn't seem to be as good as BWP or Still life. It's probably to do with the riffs. They just don't seem to have the same evil crunch.

My Arms, Your Hearse ~ I really like the concept here. It has awsome guitar work but is lacking a bit in the bass but this can't be helped as they didn't have a bass player at the time. It has one of their best songs, Demon Of The Fall but all the tracks seem to have a simular feel, including Creedence. It has a very depressing feel.

Deliverence ~ The first time I heard Wreath, I really didn't like it and it probably remains as my least favourite Opeth song. The next songs are really good but I find Mikael's clean vocals to be very bland. Master's Apprentices is probably the highlight for me, with the heavy dark riffs. Very good album but not Opeth's best.

Morningrise ~ This album is good but it lacks in the songwriting. It just seems to drag on. Johan is a great bass player and there are original bass parts but at times they seem far too hectic for the atmosphere or pace of the song. Mikaels clean vocals are also lacking. To Bid You Farewell is easily my favourite on here.

I look forward to getting Damnation and Orchid.

This album takes a little while to get into. At first, you listen to songs like Wreath and By The Pain I see in Others, and are like "pfft.. what was that" But after a while, you start to really like the brutallity Mikeal and the boys have and bring to the table. It really is a solid record. If they would have had better working conditions when making it, and some more time, it could definatly have been comparable to BWP and Still Life in terms of best.

Man I love Deliverance! The reason why it's so low on my list, mainly, is because, in my opinion, I enjoy other albums over it. Now, if Damnation was along with it as one album, like it was originaly suposed to, it would of been so much better of an album. I do like Deliverance though. It's definately Opeth's heaviest album.

2. Blakwater Park
3. Deliverance
4. My Arms, Your Hearse
5. Morningrise
6. Orchid (If the songwriting was slightly better, it would absolutely own Morningrise)
7. Ghost Reveries
8. Damnation (great album, I just prefer the others)

This list constantly changes with the exception of Still Life. That has to be the greatest metal album ever recorded..of all time! All of these albums are AMAZING, and they all have their place and moods. Somedays I just have to have GR and nothing else will do. Same with each album. "Screw Still Life, I need Orchid!" type stuff, you know? :P I think that says a lot for a band when the fans have such a hard time picking out their own personal favorite albums because the all own so much.

Yeah I reckon I'll go to the 24th too, now that you mentioned Anzac Day.

I have to wait til May to turn 17. This is a birthday present.

Yeah.

Seen them 2 weeks ago live and they totally rocked... The show was 2 hours long and they played songs from all albums except Morningrise... And Mikael is a great showman :)
As for the music - we all know that Opeth are damn good musicians, I haven't heard a single mistake and they played everything the same is it is on albums (except some drum parts, 'cause they played with another drummer)

You put Orchid first? That's a first, most Opeth fans don't think much of that album when it's up to their other releases.

Orchid's been my favorite for a while. The lengthier songs on the album are amazing; the whole album strikes me as much more melodic than some of their other releases. Granted, I have never heard MYAH, Damnation, or Deliverance, but I'm pretty happy with the albums I have now.

He hasn't been touring with them since halfway through Sounds of the Underground! It's been Martin Axenrot of Bloodbath filling in.

And I'm not exactly sure what's up with Lopez, I've heard different things from different places. Family troubles, blood disease, drugs... I wish Opeth would give us a current update.

Just to be a conformist, here is my list.

1. Morningrise

5. MAYH
6. Damnation
7. Ghost Reveries

Dude, from the Opeth site:

Opeth recently returned home from the first ever Sounds of the underground North American tour where the band shared the stage with Lamb of God, Strapping young lad, Clutch, Gwar and more. During the first weeks of the tour Martin Lopez became seriously ill and had to fly back home to Sweden for treatment. He's currently under supervision and is doing well and we hope for a swift recovery and return to his natural habitat....behind the drums.

I normally would trust the official band website, but they have not released much more than that have they? That was months ago and he still isn't back after "doing well". So he's not having a swift recovery? Tell us Opeth! I just want an update on what's going on.

Hey guys, I've been an Opeth fan for about a year now and I'm looking to expand my horizons. I own all of their albums, but I've only really listened to Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Morningrise, and a tiny bit of each of the rest of them. I was wondering if you could recommend some songs to start with, especially on Still Life and MAYH... and well, Orchid as well. Thanks in advance.

All of Still Life, surely.

The two more mellow tracks; Benighted and Face of melinda are great. As for heavier tracks, well, personally I really like them all, they all have a great mix of nice clean vocals and heavy moments. The Moor, White Cluster, Moonlapse Vertigo... Screw it, just give the whole album a spin a couple of times and find out yourself.

Also the whole of Damnation you may as well listen to. I wouldn't say specific songs can do any of their albums justice. I'd recommend A Fair Judgement and the title track from Deliverence, though. And so you know, Demon of the Fall is a long time fan favourite from My Arms, Your Hearse.

If I have to buy my ticket over the internet, I'm probably screwed. Mum doesn't trust the internet with her credit card.

Er... They have a whole album that has nothing to do with death metal, and they have various songs scattered across their other albums which also have nothing, or very little to do with death metal, why can't people enjoy those songs if they can't stand the growling vocals or dissonant guitars?

Because I'm being an elitist.

Oh, okay.

In other news, my top 5 Opeth songs are... too hard to say. How about top song from each album, that might be easier to work out... uh:

Orchid - In the Mist she was standing
Morningrise - To Bid You Farewell
My Arms, Your Hearse - When
Still Life - Maybe... White Cluster ATM, they're all about even though.
Blackwater Park - The Drapery Falls/Bleak
Deliverance - A Fair Judgement
Damnation - Windowpane
Ghost Reveries - Ghost of Perdition

Not that any of this matters, it could totally change and on most albums I love many songs equally.

Some ppl tried to start a list of top five favorite Opeth songs a page or so ago. Since that's impossible, even in our list-happy thread it didn't catch on this time :) I figured that it'd be more fun to list your favorite song from each album and then rank those. I realized even more how great Opeth is when I couldn't pick a favorite song off of a few albums :P Still, for the sake of the list, let's try:

Orchid - "The Twilight Is My Robe"
Morningrise - "To Bid You Farewell"
My Arms, Your Hearse - "Demon of the Fall"
Still Life - "Godhead's Lament"
Blackwater Park - "The Drapery Falls"
Deliverance - "Deliverance"
Damnation - "Closure"
Ghost Reveries - "The Grand Conjuration"

And now, the impossible task of putting those in an order...
1. "Godhead's Lament"
2. "Deliverance"
3. "The Drapery Falls"
4. "Demon of the Fall"
5. "The Twilight Is My Robe"
6. "Closure"
7. "To Bid You Farewell"
8. "The Grand Conjuration"

*Note: the above list is useless for me. maybe someone else will have better luck when they try :P

MAYH - When.
Still Life - Serenity Painted Death.
Blackwater Park - Bleak. (Fav Opeth song)

Damnation* - Windowpane.
Ghost Reveries - The Grand Conjuration.

Don't steer people the wrong way. If a person doesn't like death metal, don't even bother with Opeth. Period.

I beg to differ. I hate death metal (except for Opeth and old school In Flames) but love those bands.

Also, I listen to lots of stuff that could be considered pop and radio rock (like the Beatles, classic rock, Porcupine Tree/Blackfield) and I jam to Opeth.

So there's no need to make unneccessary generalizations. :thumb:

Top song from each album is better.

Orchid: In Mist She Was Standing...love that intro
Morningrise: To Bid You Farewell
MAYH: April Ethereal (Demon starts strong but gets weak toward the end IMO)
Still Life: My personal pick is Melinda, but The Moor takes it for all around best song.
Blackwater Park: Blackwater Park
Deliverance: A Fair Judgment
Damnation: Windowpane
GR: Ghost of Perdition

Ghost Reveries is possibly their most accessable sounding progressive album. It has three songs which have no death vocals or heavily distorted guitars, and another track with few death vocals though the guitars are heavier, the rest are a mix of the two. I'd recommend it to a prog fan, definately.

Ghost Reveries is a masterpiece, buy it without any hesitation. While it's not the traditional starting point for an Opeth fan, seeing as how it's a slightly more accessible standing point, there's no reason why you should begin with it. A pure work of art, I say.

It's much in the same style as Blackwater Park, but better. BWP suffers from some rather weak sections (a little of TDF, some of Dirge, much of Funeral Portrait) whereas Still Life kicks hard the whole way through.

I kind of feel this way too, the acoustic parts aren't really remarkable, I think it's the vocal melodies that make the first half of the song.

I'm not sure. The more I think about it, the less every Opeth song title makes sense.
Same... oh well, his lyrics rock either way.

The ones that make sense, anyway.

Did you used to be Darkness of Greed? Jeez too many people have name changes.

Weehee, I'm finally back. After getting haxxed, making a second account (that never got used btw) and now coming back. Wee. Anyway, I've fallen in love with TBYF. Amazing song.

It's much in the same style as Blackwater Park, but better. BWP suffers from some rather weak sections (a little of TDF, some of Dirge, much of Funeral Portrait) whereas Still Life kicks hard the whole way through.

And it has The Moor.

See for me its the other way around. Still Life suffers from something I can't put my finger on. I find Godhead's Lament a bit lacking, Serenity Painted Death was one of my favs but it's lost its appeal to me. I enjoy Moonlapse Vertigo more than either of the two.

I'd say Blackwater Park is Opeth's most consistent album. Even though The Funeral Portrait might not be the quintessential Opeth song, not one second of any song was wasted on BWP. They just complement each other perfectly.

I've only heard two songs out of Still life, and I love them both. (The moor, face of melinda).

However I want to wait until I buy the album so I can enjoy it big time. Indeed.

I just fell in love with Damnation after I watched the lamentations album. The lyrics are mushy yet so greatly made.

Pfff.

Dirge for November.
The Funeral Portrait.

Dirge for november has an amazing intro. It's one of my fave songs.
