Not to mention the catchyness of that "Pale touch" line. The Moor is awesome the whole 11 min, Godhead just has a few good parts.

And Det_Nosnip, D&D both have better drumming then Ghost Reveries... I found it boreing on Ghost, or at least average. Deliverance had a nice raw brutality to it, which totally fit... the heavy parts of this new album lacked the aggressive drumming.

You better believe it. I forgot about Serenity, that song is really cool. I just think that Opeth have yet to write another riff that is as powerfull/emotional as the Face Of melinda riff.

"Everytime you lie, God mauls a fluffy kitten."

That was the pre-emptive "oh snap" announcing that it's on.

First, acoustic riffs almost always have more emotion, especially in this case. It's production is astounding, the crackly thing only helps it. It's so perfect, and then the vocals come in and the riff is the greatest thing ever. Oh, and the solo after owns beyond belief.

Darkness
09-19-2005, 08:35 PM
Yeah, acoustic has lots of emotion. Face Of Melinda is jam packed with them if you haven't noticed. The trebely guitars over Mikeals voice at the end of the song is also magic sounding. Besides Face Of Melinda is one of Mikeals favorite Opeth songs. :p

their coming here to houston oct 21, ofcourse i already have my tickets it is gonna own. i went to sounds of the underground in dallas. there was a rain delay for an hour and so opeth's time was cut short so lamb of god can play their full set. opeth played two songs....deliverance and demon of the fall. man they get no respect they were the best band their hands down, but for some reason lamb of god headlined. lamb of god is good but they are not even worthy to step on the same stage as opeth.

Darkness

lamb of god suck but and are not even worthy to step on the same stage as opeth.

Det_Nosnip
09-20-2005, 12:05 AM
Norma Jean was the band that made me laugh. I seriously sat there and just cackled throughout the whole set....

Anyways, back with the drumming debate...

Martin's work on "Baying of the Hounds" is some of the best stuff that he's done. I've always held the opinion that he shines during Opeth's lighter/proggier moments. He's not the best "metal" drummer I've ever heard, but he's one of my favorite prog drummers...see the difference? That's why the Dam nation album was the best by far....all prog. And, yes....there were much better moments on there than that silly ending section of Deliverance. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but I kinda feel that it is slightly overhyped as far as Martin's playing goes.

Oh, and as for the Moor vs Godhead's debate....I used to be a big fan of the Moor, but it's kind of lost its charm for me. The intro is great, don't get me wrong, and its a great tune, but Godhead's is alot more interesting IMO. I like the pace of it alot better, and the whole acoustic section kicks the Moor's ***. And no, I'm not talking about the "What would they care if I did stay" part...there's alot more to the acoustic section than that. The vocal harmonies when Mikael sings "Thought I could not leave this place on this imminent day...As I've reached the final dawn To what's gone astray" are just amazing....and "Searching My Way to perplexion..The gleam of her eyes, In that moment she knew...."

I guess that my problem with the Moor is that it kind of loses steam once it gets to the acoustic sections. Although dynamics and mood changes are good, they're also rather typical of Opeth's songwriting approach. Godhead's, on the other hand, manages to maintain the energy and emotional levels throughout the song despite the acoustic breaks, and is rather unique as far as Opeth tunes go despite having so many classic Opeth elements.

ambush
09-20-2005, 01:58 AM
It sucks. Its the worst part of the song, its a good bass line but man does that tone suck...

Bleaks nothing special.

And "What would they care if I was gay, noone would know, hooooooomooooo" is a crappy vocal line.

:D Glad I got that off my chest...

Wow, you should take that Opeth avatar down right now.

Kidding, but Bleak is a classic. The opening riff with that dissonance at the end is friggin' awesome. The first verse isn't mind-blowing in any aspects, but it works well. The chorus is good stuff.. back to the verse.. chorus. The transition after the chorus repeat (3:10) is just wow. Riff after that is wow + great lyrics from now on. Especially when he says

"A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away "

Now to the mellower part with the E-bow. Great acoustic riffage, very eerie w/the E-bow. Next riff with the audible bass.. awesome, now the silence. AMAZING riff here, great bass line, singing, etc. Fade into distortion, yay. Solo, yay. 6:40+ is schweetness. Now the repeat.. I wish there were different lyrics here, but it works out to where they can transition to the ending of the song. Rockin' riff right here.. vox done. Very unique ending with the crazy distortion. Qualifies as a masterpiece in my book.

Anyways, I think I'm going to make a big list of Opeth songs from worst to best and my reasoning behind each song when I get the time.

On the subject of GR, I think it's a really good album, but not the best thing they've done by far.

1. Ghost of Perdition
2. Isolation
3. HF/ Reveries
4. Hours of Wealth
5. Atonement
6. Baying of the Hounds (Top 6 songs are between great and masterpiece)
7. The Grand Conjuration
8. Beneath the Mire (I don't like this one at all)

I think "Isolation Years" and "Hours of Wealth" are incredibly amazing songs. I love that new influence they show on H.O.W. But on I.Y. the part,:
"Can't forget the years, she's loooooooooost.:, is just amazing.

hey guys, i have a question. Do you guys think that the Martins and the rest of the band communicate to each other in English casually like while on tour? i mean i figure they probably would since both groups of members can speak english to some degree but i imagine it would be hard to understand the Martins when they speak english (they have a THICK accent) so i was just wondering if any body knew how they communicate to each other normally. Kind of a wierd question i know but while eating breakfast about an hour ago listening to Blackwater Park it kinda just randomly popped into my head and i figured this is the best place to ask lol

well the Martins arent swedish, they speak spanish (they are both from Uruguay), and have you actually heard them talk english? they struggle a lot from every interview ive ever seen with them (check out Lamentations). The swedes in the group grasp english easier, but id imagine they probably talk to each other in english since the swedes arent fluent in spanish and vice versa. I just think it would be really hard to understand the Martins when talking english, but its not like its their fault any ways, you can tell they try really hard.

I'm troubled my fellow Opeth fans, a local drummer from my area of MA thinks Martins Lopez fails against the drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, and thinks that Opeth in general fails to the "they are no were near the talent level , song structure , or coplexity of a7x ." He is the drummer to this band - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=21028799&Mytoken=B6AE0AA7-C7AA-4D82-9591BF6D738804001776951968

Technically speaking, Opeth's music isn't very difficult at all. Actually, they play rather simple stuff. Their talent lies in the songwriting. It's extremely difficult to compose songs that are that long and manage to keep them memorable and interesting. Opeth can do that as second nature. I personally cannot stand A7X. Their music is very generic, uninteresting, and I fail to see why they are noted for their technical skill. I've heard some songs by them and found them incredibly bad.

And judging by the songs on that site, he doesn't know the first **** thing about technical skill. Oh Jesus, that was bad. Their singer should be shot repeatedly, and the drumming was nothing.

Bleak is a good track. I just think that some of the first lines with the clean vocals (Mike or Steve) sound really bad... the middle section is nice, and the parts with the growls are awesome, but I don't care for about 5 min of the song, so yeah.

Black Rose Immortal cannot be beat.

Now you see that's the weird thing. The first 2 Opeth songs I downloaded were Bleak and Black Rose Immortal. And to be honest, I hated BRI at 1st, although it was my 1st Opeth experience. It was Bleak that actually got me to buy the albums I have.

For more tracks similar to that, try perhaps The Drapery Falls. Deliverance is another good track. To give you a feel for their diversity, perhaps get yourself Patterns in the Ivy, and Patterns in the Ivy II. Both short, acoustic, beautiful songs. Short by Opeth standards anyway. Black Rose Immortal is another top suggestion. It's 20 minutes long, but pure gold.

Be warned that very few of their songs are as easy to listen to (for the uninitiated) as TBYF. They do lots and lots of 'cookie monster' vocals. This is assuming you aren't into metal. I think all of Opeth's lyrics were well put together, but I dislike the lyrics on Ghost Reveries. I don't think I will ever get into that album, there's too much singing. The only song I tolerate is Reverie/Harlequin Forest. I like the ''heavy Opeth with a little bit of singing'' better. That's what makes his voice so extraordinary. Because he barely did it. On Ghost Reveries he sings a lot, and it doesn't sound the same. It sounded better when it was only a few lines. (Orchid)

Don't get my wrong, Mikaels vocals on D@mnation are amazing, but that's D@mnation. I expected Ghost Reveries to be way heavier then it turned out to be. There's a lot of clean vocals on Blackwater Park, but certain songs/riffs make up for that in the album, which makes it come together all in all. I think Ghost Reveries is Opeth's lightest album.

The Grand Conjuration comes so close to being heavy both musically and lyrically, and that's the heaviest song on the album. I've always known Opeth for their brutality. Ghost Reveries lacks that, there's not enough double kick or violent riffs, and the Keyboards really don't suit Opeth like I thought. They're okay, but... :upset:

When I think about it, I appreciate Deliverance a LOT more now ;)

The whole album Deliverance gets a regular spin from me, I love the more unappreciated songs like Wreath and By The Pain I See In Others.
Yeah, those songs don't get nearly enough credit.

You saying I'm not a die hard fan?

Pfft!

:p

I don't even know most of Opeth's lyrics. I'm not too big on lyrics of most bands, except a few songs here and there. I concentrate on the guitars usually.

Opeth is a million times better when you get to sing along. :)

Let's do a sing-a-long with Opeth kiddies. You can order your Opeth-Bop CD for just $19.99 w/tax. Sorry, no CODs. Order today!

I just sing along to the clean parts. NOOOoooooooo growling for me....I love how it sounds, but if you try to do that without knowing what you're doing, you'll be talking through a voicebox in no time.

I tried growling with the album Deliverance, and as a result, I lost my voice for 3 days. :p

To be honest, I don't even know what he says in the growling parts. I have read the lyrics, but never memorized them. I could sing alot to most of the new CD, but I'm just not a sing-a-long kind of guy. Except for bands like Funeral Diner, Circle Takes The Square, and Orhicd. :p

It takes a while to get used to growling, if you do it too often at first you can injure your vocal chords. Now I do it all the time, but only when I'm alone in my car. :p People give me funny looks when I'm driving though. :upset:

I've never understood how people can make those noises. I always thought it was some inborn ability, like wiggling your ears or whatever.

Supposively, Mikael uses what he calls a "compressor" in his throat to growl. I have no idea what that means, heh. But it's something most people could probably do if they worked on it hard enough.

I always like to scream and growl along to music. I don't actually do it loudly, pretty quietly actually. But, my throat will be sore for like the next 2 days. If I just keep disregarding the soreness, will I eventually be able to do this a lot, without any consequences?

I think you can find a better counterbalance to Opeth than that! I mean...if the counterbalance you're looking for is quality of the music, then Korn works great, but I wouldn't throw a "musical diversity" party for enjoying both if I were you. :p

They've been selling Opeth merch for a long time. I saw a Blackwater Park shirt there ages ago, but didn't have the cash to get it. I have no problem with Hot Topic, other than the fact that they are overpriced. People try too hard to be "tr00", "gr1m" and such crap. Hot Topic isn't a bad store. Every store has idiots that shop there, so there is no point in singling out Hot Topic. I get shirts there sometimes, and a wristband or two. I like their pants actually, but I'm not to keen on spending $50+ for a pair of pants.

Uhh... I'm half asleep so I forgot what my point was.
