There is a band called Farmakon who are very similar to Opeth, though a bit heavier and a little funkier. They have an album out called A Warm Glimpse, it's great.

You might also like Woods of Ypres and Agalloch, though they're not quite so similar :)

That'll probably be your best bet. Sunset shouldn't be too bad as if it was a weekend. You know tourists and all.

They only have two albums out so far. The first, Resurrection Through Carnage, had Mike doing vocals. The second, Nightmare Made Flesh, had Peter doing vocals. I'm listening to RTC right now and it's prety good. I'll listen to NMF when it's done downloading.

I saw that. Prodction isn't what I meant. I am talking about the entire concept to the video. Opeth had to have some say in that. Video ideas get pitched to the bands, and they choose whether they like it or not. I'm sure Opeth wouldn't want something meaningless in their work.

Well, he wrote the lyrics.

I wander what actually took place with that video. Mike has sucha broad imagination, I can't picture the concept of this video being totally his creation. The scary Mr. Bondage man lip syncing the growls? Old men looking scared in a chair? The Grand Conjuration lyrics are so much deeper than the situation portayed, and I don't think Mike would have wanted to lighten the meaning and mood of his own song.
Hmm...I Do wander how it all took place.

I thought the video was alright, but average. I'm sure Mike had more say in the video concept than we are admitting to. I just don't see why he would agree to a video like that, unless there was a reason. Perhaps he just wants a more mainstream video? Also, TGC is one of the most different Opeth songs they've made, I don't think it was a good choice for a first single.

Steven Wislon (of Porcupine Tree) did backing vocals on Blackwatrer Park, Deleiverance and Dämnation.

Go for Morningrise first, since everyone loves it, then Ghost Reveries since it's more controversial. But it's an awesome album. Save MAYH and Orchid until you're a more solid Opeth fan, IMO. I like them less than most Opeth. Deliverance is probably the weakest album though.

Special Brew

Yeah, it was definately more vocal. The guitars just sucked in comparison to their old stuff, still good but just not in comparison. Could this be a sign of a new Opeth sound?

It would be really cool is Mikael did some solo singer/songwriter acoustic thing for a side project. That way he oculd get all his kick *** vocal based music out at the same time of keeping Opeth heavy and based more on music.

I would love to hear solo Mikael stuff.

still growing on me slowly. Reverie/Harlequin forest just comes across as weird. It's almost flat sounding... in fact a lot of the heavy moments seem flat in production. Anyone?
About 9.15 into Ghost Of Perdition is genius however. And Hours Of Wealth has signalled a new road for Opeth in terms of 'softer' songs.

There are a lot of bands that I think could benefit from making their music at least a tad bit more "mainstream."

Not mainstream in a "this is gonna make us so much money" sense but just in terms of making things more melodic and catchy. I dunno, I'm in love with Ghost Reveries right now and I haven't always felt like such a fan of Opeth until hearing this album, and maybe I just got a bad start with Opeth(I am trying to get more music of theirs lately and give them more of a fair chance than I gave them before) but it seems there are bands that have so much potential but try so hard to go against the grain that it becomes hard to listen to. GR to me seems to have eased up and seems a lot more softer and catchier, and it sounds really great to me.

^^^^ I thought it was one of the greatest albums ever written for a very long time, I loved everybit of it. (I'm talking about The Human Equation). BUT there is one thing that absolutely ruins it to the point that I sometimes can't even listen to the songs. The lyrics are TOO straightforward. I know this is the tiniest of things on an otherwise amazing album, but it just ****s me.

Other than that everything is perfect, great music, two hours of it, awsome prog stuff you know violins, flutes, synths, digeredoo, and an amazing aray of voices. Its got it all.

Bloodbath's Eaten is about the same event. In case you didn't know, this actually happened in Germany. A man answered an add in the newspaper looking for someone who wanted to be eaten. The two met up in the man's apartment, where they both ate his, erm, 'piece'. He was then willingly killed, and the man who put the add in the paper then videotaped himself cutting the man up and eating/preparing him. Apparently there's a market for such tapes.

When I heard the Human Equation and heard him singing (watching the Human Equation DVD with a video of him growling also made me respect it more), I decided to give them another chance...and they're now one of my favorite bands.

The whole cast was incredible, though...I discovered SO many bands through that album. Marcela Bovio, Heather Findlay, and Devin Graves were real standouts for me.

There isn't one song that sounds even close to Bleak. Which makes the song so powerful :D

On the contrary, I was so happy that my show is going to be Pelican. Pelican is one of my favorite bands, so it's two of my favorite bands in one show. Amazing.

This talk of Pelican made me decide to download some, and now I can't wait to get my hands on some cds.

I would prefer them way more than Nevermore... which is who I'll get if I can make it to Cleveland.

I love Ghost of Perdition and The Grand Cunjauration though, but the rest isn't all that special IMO ( for Opeth standard)

I disagree. I think this is one of their best records. Songs like Atonement and Hours of Wealth sound like nothing they've ever done, and I love that sound. Then, more traditional songs like Baying of the Hounds are some of the best material I've heard from them. Ghost of Perdition and Reverie/Harlequin forest are just epic, amazing songs.

Unusual. I found Ghost Reveries to be incredible for the entire duration, where back in the day I couldn'rt stand to listen to one of their songs for more than a couple minutes.

It's a little different now though. :)

It all depends on what you are looking for in their music. If you are looking for better songwriting and better vocal performance, then you will love the new album. But as far as actual music... :(

I think he means every has grown in the band, but just growth doesn't mean your music gets better or tops itself, or even stays at the same level

That's true, but I really enjoy the actual music of this album, regardless of songwriting. I mean, I think the songwriting sounds a little more simplistic in a lot of cases. I just like the atmosphere and the textural additions from the keyboards.

I thought the song writing was ok, but hasn't topped the other records. The vocals are at their peak, but its waaaaay to vocal based now. Guitar work is well under par.

Same here, but I guess like the2stranger I'm kinda biased about the addition of the keys...I'm a keyboardist too ^^

I love the new album though, the mix between the dark atmosphere and proggishness is awesome.

I freaking the love the very rhytm based riffs of Ghost of Perdition though.
it reminds me of the outro of deliverance (song) but instead of being an outro, it's a 10 minute song.

Agreed. There are some decent parts on the album, but I personally think it lacks ''heavyness''. I kinda see what they're trying to do with the whole keyboard concept, but I just can't get into that for some reason. I've listened to that album a thousand times and just can't get into it. Reverie/Harlequin Forest and The Baying Of The Hounds are the only songs on the album that stand out to me.

I was hoping for the album to have the same vibe as Deliverance. Deliverance was really good. I appreciate that album more and more every day. There are hardly any parts on Ghost Reveries with double bass or violent climax riffs as heard on Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse. Don't get me wrong, Ghost Reveries is a fantastic album all in all, but I would of loved another LP like Deliverance. Ghost Reveries is my least favorite Opeth album.

I have to agree with you, when I first heard Godhead's Lament, I was blown away, especially by the interlude riffs and solos, but now I tend to not pay attention to that song much. I don't hate it, it's just not in my favorite opeth songs list anymore. I still like some of the acoustic passages though.

One more thing, Ghost Reveries is a weak album. Decent, but it lacks the quality in songs such as Masters Apprentices or The Leper Affinity, or the song writing in stuff like The Moor or Black Rose Immortal and it certainly does not have a new song that could replace Demon Of The Fall. 3.5/5 for an album, but 2/5 for an Opeth album.

Also had to get that out of my chest...

ok now I disagree with you. This is where we have to keep things to ourselves and not spout things out as facts, but rather as opinion. So I'll take everything you say opinion instead of fact. fair enough? lol
