Yepperz, Great recording. One of their finest. I am a bit concerned with what Mikael said about a particular song from that LP though. His least favourite Opeth song is The Night And The Silent Water which bugs the hell out of me. I love that song! It's pry my 2nd fav from that LP! WHY DOESN'T HE LIKE IT!? I really want to find out. Anyone know?
Yea, here she is
Harder than life
In my arms
See she there
Entwined with love
Unclean she is
And she comes down to me
And she offers me sleep
Under her black...

Actually...he doesn't like it because when he wrote it, Mike's grandfather died, to which he was close to, so he associates the song with his passing.
Though, I don't know why Peter doesn't like it, but it might be for the same reason Mike doesn't like it.
I still think Blackwater Park is their best, but not knocking Morningrise (which, I was actually gonna name my band that for a while, but we don't play metal)
I still think Still Life doesn't get the credit it deserves...****ing amazing album. Is there a more beautiful song than Benighted? I doubt it
Also, does anyone notice that the guitar riff right after the chorus on PT's "Prodigal" is very similar to the hard riff in "Face of Melinda"??
I always thought that was strange, but Steven probably liked it and wanted to use it

I had to post this. A lot of my old fav bands have sold out and most of the crap I listened to 5-10 years ago just flat out suck now. I bought a CD last year entitled Orchid by Opeth. Lemme tell you...It opened my mind to Music. I listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera etc when I was younger, I am talking the early 90's. There are a select few good bands that have been out there forever and havn't sold out. Slayer, Iron Maiden etc. But Opeth...I don't think It's possible. if you havn't heard of them or heard them I suggest Buying ALL of their CD's. The most Intricate band In my opinion. Songs average around 13 minutes...And you just want MORE!!! The first song I heard by Opeth was In Mist She Was Standing. I had goosebumps....Just when I thought There were no good bands out there Opeth rescued me.
Opeth has no Genre. They are Opeth :thumb:

While Lopez does use that one beat quite often (you know which one I mean), I don't see how you can call him repetitive, especially compared to most all other drummers out there. He's highly creative with his lines, and knows exactly what to play to fit a song.

I think the exotic drums on Closure is also a nice touch and shows his Latin roots and his range

I first got into Opeth in the fall of 2001. Blackwater park was making a big stink and everyone on the internet was talking about it.
At the time I belonged to the muchmusic "loud" message board, and that was basically the only band I heard mention of...
I decided to download some stuff, the first song I heard was a cover of celtic frosts( I think) circle of tyrants... I did not really like it at first. I knew it was going to be death metal vocals, but I heard they had great clean singing so I decided to get more.
Next... I downloaded to Bid you farewell, I absolutely loved this tune, it made me cry the first time I heard it,NEVER HAD I HEARD MORE EMOTIONAL MUSIC... I needed more to feed my addiction... I sat through the death parts to get to the ever so sweet clean singing, I eventually loved every aspect of Opeth's music. They even led me to like death metal, no band will ever impact me as much as Opeth. I used to listen to them months on end, no other band, just Opeth, all the time.
I seen them live for the first time last Febuary, no one would ever go with me for the previous shows, I am just happy I got more people into this great band so I could actually go with someone. The concert was easily the best I have ever seen, nothing compares.
They are my favorite band X1I9023982983928392839

I've recently been bitten by the Opeth bug.
It was actually Arjen Lucassen's "Ayreon" project that got me into Opeth, ironically. I absolutely fell in love with "The Human Equation," IMO the best album released this year without a doubt. After hearing the album, I decided to go out and track down all of the individual vocalists from the project and hear what their respective bands sounded like...
Obviously, I had already heard of Opeth, and had heard a few songs. The first listens had not really left an impression on me...I don't think that I was ready for the DM vocals, and they distracted me from being able to hear the whole picture.
After hearing Akerfeldt's performance with Ayreon, and reading a few articles on the man I thought "I HAVE to give that band another chance!"
I managed to get "Blackwater Park" and "****ation" off of the internet, but went out and bought BP anyways to respect the band.
I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT! Seriously...I probably listen to it at least 2 or 3 times a day, it absolutely never gets old. "Leper Affinity", the first track to BP, was what got me hooked...by this time, I had grown somewhat accustomed to growling vocals, and this time around, I enjoyed them. And then...
Lost are days of Spring
You sighed and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin."
 Yeah...that part *really* did it for me. As I progressed through the album, I realized just how absurdly diverse and amazing the band is. When it's all said and done, my two favorite tracks are "Harvest" and "The Funeral Portrait," which each represent a polar opposite on Opeth's spectrum, and are both incredible in their own way. The band has quickly skyrocketed to be one of my favorite bands.

glad to see alot of Opeth fans :D , yea its nice in their heavier songs, when it breaks into a softer acoustic part or whatever, keeps the song interesting,
Blackwater Park was my first album as well, i think it was Harvest and The Drapery Falls,(altho i love the 'death metal vocal' songs equally) that got me listening to them, i had never heard anything like it in my life

Yes, Opeth is one of my favorite bands of all time. I have seen them 3 times live, each more astounding than the last. The first was mainly a heavy set, small crowd in the Detroit area 200 people approx. The second show they toured with Porcupine Tree, one of my other favorite bands of all time. They played pretty much an all easy listening set, along with Porcupine Tree. I didnt mind at all, hearing the new ****ation tracks were amazing. The 3rd time around they played almost all heavy with an encore of "Demon Of The Fall", the bands favorite song to play. Also being a bass player, I noticed their bassist' fingers go INSANE live. One time I was fairly drunk and I swear his picking hand looked similar to that of a giant spider break dancing all over the strings, truly a spectacle to be seen.
Opeths songs, when I hear them, something seems to just click and I just love their sound and the way they seamlessly flow through heavy and melodic pieces, making for quite an experience.\
Also, unsure if anyone has posted previously or has known. Opeth is currently working on a new album that will be released some time in 2005. As long as they keep up their going trends, I'm sure it will be astounding.

Yeah I agree. I shouldn't of posted this it's a Cliche'. lol
But..in the turn of events, Black Sabbath did start metal. I can't argue that. I am talking OLD Black Sabbath...They started the Twin lead thing and the famous E, D, C chord progression. Metallica copied a lot of their styles and a lot of other songs they didn't even write. I despise Metallica, In fact I LOATHE them. I should'nt capitalize the "m" in metallica anymore cause that would give that name respect...I would want that now...
"Granted you a hollow stare, another soul within the divine herd..." -Opeth(Black Rose Immortal)
Kudos to you for noticing opeth, they are truly an amazing band. With that said, im not all to happy with your bashing of possible the greatest metal band in history, Metalllica. While Black Sabbath founded heavy metal, Metallica defined it, and that is no doubt. While their past couple of albums have been unsatisfactory, they are still teh defintive force they have always been. I was fortunate to see them live at floor level, and i must say, after 24 years, they can still deliver a force of metal that is powerful. So, sorry Fylnn, but withour Mtallica, Opeth would not be around today

I am guessing you listen to Korn, Diana Ross, Grand Funk Railroad, Dave Mathews Band, Ashlee Simpson and KISS. I am also guessing you are around 14 years old and an only child with no father forcing your inner turmoyl to thrive on dressing up in Mommies clothes. I am guessing you like to collect Barbie Dolls. If you think Opeth sucks, has no talent or is "Gay" then...you fit into this category.

^ Err no,the follow up album will be the same death vs. melodic that opeth have always done. Mikael Akerfeldt was quizzed on the radio about a possible BM album by Andrew Hoag last time they were in Australia.
Mikeal stated that at the time of making the documentry he was in the process of writing one of the heaviest songs for the new album, and that he was considering doing a full concept BM album then. He has since decided to scrap that idea and continue to make music for opeth generally the way that it has always been.

My least favorite is My Arms...I love the first 2 songs but I don't really like the others. But, I haven't listened to My Arms in a little bit, I forget sometimes.
But to answer Flynn's question...my favorite is still Blackwater Park. I remember just listening to the first 4 songs off of it (Leper Affinity, Bleak, Harvest, Drapery Falls) with my jaw on the floor and then...holy ****, the title track. When ever Mike sings "Mod round the dead"...I ****ing lose it! With the bass slapping in the backround...I think its almost an orgasm when I hear it ;)
But, the best song, to me is still Drapery Falls. Just beautifully haunting and the lyrics are amazing. The guitar in the front...the only word I can describe it is epic, just amazing...Then when it slows down, how bad *** is that "Spirling to the ground below, like autumn leaves left in the wake to fade away. Waking up to your sound again and lapse into the ways of misery" <-----Just amazing
BTW, Flynn, I answered your question about why Mike doesn't like The Night and the Silent Water a few pages back...You're welcome ;)

is anyones least fave album Still Life..or is it me..dont get me wrong i have all their albums..but i dunno..its still a good album..maybe i havent listened to it enough for it to grow on me..
Orchids my fave followed by Morningrise :thumb:
Still Life does grow on you. It used to be my least listened to Opeth LP. It's been in my CD player in my Truck for 2 months straight now. Yes, it does grow on you. Still Life IMO is their most intricate Lp they have recorded. I can't explain why in words. The guitar work is strange. I mean they recorded chords I don't think anyone even knew about  but seriously though...Very well put together LP. Orchid and Morningrise are badass too. No other cd's I own can even come CLOSE to their complexity. Still Life took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting it to sound like that and thats what makes it grow on ya. It totally sounds nothing like The "Hearse" and a long shot from Orchid/Morningrise. Like vines it grows on you.
I shant resist. In tears for all of eternity.
She turned around and faced me for the first time.
Run away, run away. Just one second, and I was left with nothing.
Her fragrance still pulsatingthrough damp air.
That day came to an end.
And she had lost in me, her Credence

I just bought MAYH a few days ago and have listened to it twice. When I first heard the reviews I was immensely excited, but when I listened to it, I was let down. I was expecting so much more. I have only listened to it twice though. Nothing stood out yet and I hope that will change as soon as I get more listens in.
Morningrise still stands as my favorite album (not just Opeth). Every track on that CD is.. AHH!!! I mainly like the distorted harmonies or whatever you'd like to call them.

Theres no doubting opeth are an important metal band, but the thing that impresses me most about them is their ability to convince new fans. ive got most of my mates hooked on them, and they inspire you to just pick up the guitar and ****in PLAY!!. when the eagles played hotel california live on j2, my olds were giving them the biggest whipping ive ever heard. Man opeth play that **** in every song.

Yeah. Agreed...I do like Deliverance but it isn't up to their standards IMO. The Masters Apprentices is my Favourite tune from that LP. I have recently been listening to a lot of the "hearse", trying to play the intro to the song When...It's ****ing impossible. I can play all sorts of stuff but the intro is quite hard to play and get it to sound right. Some strange chord structures are involved. I can pretty much play all of Karma...Jazz chords start it out, sounds badass! :thumb:
keep going at the intro to when, you'll get the timing. I can play around 6 minutes of that song now. It feels good to hit the nail.

No, i honestly don't think they deserve their own genre. It's not like they are doing anything revolutionary.
Not only that, but there are so many genres these days that I don't think there is any band that exists or will exist in the near future that deserves their own genre.

I don't find opeth songs hard to play, just hard to learn because they have a lot of little bridges and do not like to repeat parts in songs a lot, it's just a lot of memory you have to comitt to one song basically.
I find Opeth hard to learn, mostly because my lack of guitar skill, but also because most of the songs I want to learn are so rich with harmonies and packed with multiple layers that I can't get it to sound right so I give up. :) Go me.
Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't learn Opeth to get it to sound right anyway...I just rip 'em off! No, just kidding, but really, understanding all the parts does wonders for my creativity. Actually, I did a progressive rock score for the Lord of the Rings trilogy as my senior project(I was gonna record it, too, but I ran out of time), and Opeth were a huge inspiration for a lot of the riffs and layers. No direct rip-offs, but the Guitar Grimoire and Opeth are the two main reasons I understand theory, so it's a huge inspiration. That DVD documentary--"Lamentations"--they just released makes me want to write a million songs when I watch it. Pick it up sometime.
BTW, other bands besides Opeth? There are none that do Opeth's style as well as they do. But it seems to me that you're like me in that you really like layers and complex orchestration. So, here's something to take a risk with: this Icelandic alternative band called Sigur Ros. Trust me. Go to the music store and ask for either the album "Ægetis Byrjun," or "()" (that's right, the parentheses album). This band are musical geniuses through and through. It's only four guys coming up with incredible string arrangements and ambient guitar and piano textures...there's very little you would qualify as standard "rock" about them. Matter of fact, get that "()" album first. Very minimalist, and sometimes repetitive, but the very last song of the album is worth the price. I'm not even joking...that song is close to my number-one favorite song of all time. It's got the biggest orgasmic explosion of any song I have ever heard. The drummer explodes with such intense fury after an album filled with slow beats that he puts Danny Carey to shame. Check it out. It's the most gorgeous music ever. It's good homework music, too, especially at a loud volume.

If you've got a Borders Books and Music around, they might have the Grimoire. The Grimoire is really six or seven books, and they all fit together as a whole. You've got Scales and Modes, Chords and Voicings, The Keyboard Grimoire, the Bass Grimoire, A Notated Intervallic Study of Scales(which is a sight-reading training book), the Chord Encyclopedia, and Progressions and Improvisation. To tell the truth, music stores usually carry songbooks and technique-oriented books. The songbook section of a big store like Borders might have just what you're looking for.
Strawberries also will probably have Sigur Ros. Sam Goody...wouldn't know. Check it out anyway. I don't think you'll be disappointed, although I should reserve my praise for someone else who already likes it, as it is very strange in parts, particularly the vocalist's extremely high-pitched falsetto, but it's a strangeness I like.

Progressive death metal..gee, who'd have thought it'd have a selective fanbase? :)
Opeth isn't for everybody. Mikael's growling scares off alot of people with softer tastes, and the acoustic sections probably bore alot of die-hard death metal heads to tears. I'd say that you need a pretty broad taste in music in order to be able to really appreciate the band.

I agree...you have to have an appreciation for all kinds. I'm not a huge metal fan, but Opeth just changed me a lot and helped me accept metal for its genius. If you close your mind to Opeth, I just say "Its your loss and you don't know what you are missing"
A lot of Opeth fans were not death metal fans until they heard them, but Opeth is like a bridge to a greener pasture (or black, on how you view metal). I know without Opeth, I wouldn't have heard of The Gathering, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree and Anathema, which are 4 of my favorite bands.

:) Yeah, I guess they're not for everybody. The singing is a bit strange, very high, and untrained. I dig most of it, but I can totally understand the less-than-pleased face you've got up there.
But that eighth song off "()," man...seriously. In some hardcore circles this song is entitled "The Pop Song" but the title is just Sigur Ros's weird humor. The song is unbelievable. Hey Kaden, do you have that? Maybe you know what I'm talking about.
BTW, and bucket, if I get answers to this question, it may help your quest to get off Opeth, but for the other gentlemen (and women, too, haven't checked if you're actually in here but I'm just playing it safe) in this forum, I've got a question. Music Junkies Anonymous has brought this band called Paramaecium to my attention, and the reviews say that they preceded Opeth in the very heavy/very beautiful cross of metal. I have a lot of respect for this particular reviewer's opinions, and he considers multiple moments off their albums to contain the most beautiful and most powerful moments he's heard on any other album of the same type(including his favorite guitar solo of all time), and that includes all Opeth and the band of Opeth's first producer(what is the name? I think it's Edge of Sanity. Did they release an album called "Crimson?" If so, then that's it.). I can't find either of their albums in stores or @ bn.com or Amazon. Anybody know this band?

I don't see Opeth is that heavy, they have heavy moments...like 2 minutes in on Forest of October (I think that's the song)...they got A LOT more progressive and, therefore, in my opinion...a thousand times better :)

D*mnation is NOTHING like their other albums. In mostly every Opeth song there is some acoustic passages and nice vocals, but a great portion is a death metal type dealy.
Blackwater Park is pretty well balanced with heavy/soft stuff, but if you're opposed to heavy metal, than you might want to hold off of Opeth's other works.

So, how about "Lamentations," the DVD? I think it's a stunning video, great watch, although I'll admit I was diasapointed that the set was all new stuff. I heard that it had something to do with copyrights laws due to the fact that all of the albums before BWP were on a different label...?

I don't think it was copyrights, I heard that they could have put older stuff on if they wanted, but the label didn't want to promote albums that were put out by a different label.
And I agree, it's a sick DVD. I especially love their performance of that one ****ation song, I can't think of the name right now, but it's the one that goes "Heal myself, a shadow on my heart" or something like that. That's my favorite song from ****ation, and I loved the extended version on the DVD.
Ah, yeah...that's what it was. Grrrr...terrible reason, IMO. The point is to promote the BAND, not just the albums!

I struck someone a deal a couple weeks ago. I would give them any CD to listen to, and they would give me any CD to listen to. I gave them Opeth a little early (they forgot the Phish CD). It turns out they can only listen to it until the vocals come on. It's too "devil music" :-\ Apparently Opeth sings about satan all the time

Well I finally got my friend to realize he likes Opeth. He'd always say stuff like "Opeth sucks, emo emo wah wah" to piss me off, but he never really based his opinion on anything. So tonight we were driving around playing music, and I had a mix cd with some Woods of Ypres on it. He said he liked it, so I said "I've got their full length, hold on..." and slipped in MAYH. Here's a brief transcription:
(April Ethereal is on)
Jon: His voice is better on this one. (thinking it's Woods of Ypres)
Me: Yeah, well, uh, this one is newer.
Jon: Dude, he sounds like that guy from Opeth, but better.
(Credence is on)
Jon: This guy's got a tight voice, who is it?
Me: You really want to know? Mikael Akerfeldt
Jon: Hmm. (doesn't know who that is)
Me: Dude, why do you talk **** about Opeth, you like them everytime you listen as long as you don't know it's them.
Jon: WHAT! I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO OPETH!? Oh man, I like Opeth...
Me: Relax, it's not like you're finding out you're gay or anything.
Jon: I know, but it feels like it.
(Silence)
Jon: ****, I like Opeth.

^^ Yeah, sadly, people tend to have negative first impressions of the band. I think that some of it is actually intentional on the part of the band, as alot of what they are represents everything that people are either often afraid of or who people hate without really knowing why (ex: death vocals, or for metal fans, acoustic breaks and dynamics).
me and a girl i am/was in love with decided to go to an opeth concert in april.

In the documentary on the Lamentations DVD they said they wanted to do something very different with the next album; Mikeal wants to do a concept cd again, but wants the songs to have a more 'black metal' feel.
Here's a random quote from an intereview I was reading that mentioned a new album;
Mikeal: Yeah, with more like a swing to it, and also have some ultra extreme parts as well as some of the beautiful metal bits.

Well, it's hard to say if a band is overrated since it all comes down to opinion. It is however possible to say if a band is over-hyped, and in the metal community Opeth are just that. However, I believe they deserve it.

It's ok but they have better mellow songs i.e harvest, windowpane or to bid you farewell.

I like the clean part in Godheads Lament.
I love the rock part in Face of Melinda, (just cliches it)
Dont u think its a shame Opeth is losing to Metallica right now at the battle?
Glad I did my part though. Opeth rocks

Yeah opeth really should win that ultimate metal band thing. They have everything all those other bands have and more.

yeah, as someone mentioned earlier, they have consistently been great, i believe the only other group in that poll that deserve the chance to challenge them is iron maiden, but i remember the 'killers' album, and that sucked, so yup, opeth pwn all! :P

Yeah I like Maiden, but now that I am into the godly musicianship and emotion of Opeth, I really can't turn back.

I used to like damnation a lot, but nowadays I would move morningrise about it. I tend to agree with that list though.

you don't like MAYH? i think it's one of their better albums, eh, just my opinion

The difference between the albums depends alot on my sort of mood. Just, Blackwater Park and Morningrise are always near the top. I find myself listening to Deliverance probably the least, and I had Orchid for the longest so I have been taking a break from repeated listenings of it. I like them all in different ways I guess
