OK, now I'm definitely sure that The Grand Conjuration is the best song on the album.
It's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And to the people who argue that the main riff repeats too much...... it should because it kicks so much ASS!

The whole left side of the cover is just aching for an "Opeth" symbol at the top, and a "Ghost Reveries" on the bottom.
I think the art looks great without the logo and stuff. It's powerful on its own.

Opeth and Tool would be cooler; that rumor floated around a while back. I would kill for that.
My thoughts on Ghost Reveries: I think this album is awesome. I need more time to decide where it stands in relation to all the other Opeth albums, but I don't think it knocks Still Life out of the top spot (for me). I absolutely love every track except Harlequin Forrest. It's pretty good, I guess; just my least favorite on the album. I'm not sure what my favorite song on the album is, but I know that Isolation Years is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Absolutely un-freaking believable! :) I think GR is a concept album simply because of the way he references other lyrics from the album and other song titles. Beneath the mier is in "Baying of the Hounds", he talks about baying in at least one (possibly 2, I don't remember) song other than "Baying of the Hounds". The same occurs on MAYH and SL.
I'm glad to know that Isolation Years isn't a part of a concept because it was throwing off my whole interpretation of the album. I'll read the lyrics a few more times and post what I think the story is later. All in all, this album does NOT dissapoint! :)

I don't get how Deliverance is so unliked by so many. I think its an awesome record, not a bad track. A little rough around the production area, and some of the guitars sounded pretty hollow but the songs are all epicily awesome IMO.
I like Deliverance as well, but the reason I think I don't like it as much as their others is because when I bought it, I was let down by it because none of the songs, in my opinion, lived up to the title track, which I was completely blown away by. The other songs were good, but I wasn't blown away.

" Our abode īmongst the stars is waiting, long enough for our last breath of life. You stare at nothing, right through me, at times resembling the Devil's concubine. And me, I am the idol that would long to caress our eyes until they would open no more. I would comfort you if I only could, but as we all know by now...I am just thin air. Unaware as you are of my presence, you are losing yourself. Hiding within The Amen Corner "
and i hear no singing..
yeah.. whats the deal?? :( :(
the album is a concept album and it has a story through every song, yet madrigal doesn't have the vocal aspect to it, just the story aspect.

Oh yeah of course there's a description, I remember reading the lyrics to MAYH. I haven't seen many concept albums where the songs are tied together as well as this one, the last word of each song even leads into the next one.
Epilogue
There it was.
The final destiny.
A sunrise that never came,
still the night lamp that never faded away.
Farewell was the word,
and the afterglow was the brave morning.
Rising and telling everyone
about the beauty of its PROLOGUE.
Mikael is a fantastic songwriter.

Does anyone else hate TGC video? The thing that really gets me is that none of the band members face is shown AT ALL. They have their hair in front of their face to be "mysterious" (the word I imagine being thrown around when the video was being made).
Ok, seriously, I ****ing hate this video badly. Why does that guy with the mask have to lip sync the growls? Am I suppose to want to smash a guitar over Opeth's head for having such an atrocious video? They probably had little say in it the making though, but why shouldn't the band be blamed for such an awful creation?
Now onto the album! 1 and 2 are amazing. There are some of the best acoustic bits in them. 3, 5, and 8 are good. 4 and 7 are skip worthy... even though I won't skip them yet until I get a more finalized grasp on my opinion.
Isolation years would be an awesome song to end on if the track itself had a respectable ending, but it just kind of shut downs.
Atonement is just kind of boring along with TGC. TGC has some great parts, but the verse is dull and the main riff is too similar to BWP's last riff. I'm going to try to analyze the 2 riffs to see just how similar they are. My hypothesis is that it will have identical interval movement with a different cadence.

It was a great show. It was at Jannus Landing(My new favorite venue. That place kicks major butt for concerts. You can see perfectly from everywhere. Its in the middle of the town in St.Peterburg, and is outside. Its very personal). It was like an off-date for Ozzfest.
Trivium were pretty good. I'm not really a fan of them, but they sounded talented guitar-wise. In Flames kicked ass. They were soooo good. It was my 2nd time seeing Shadows Fall, and this time was even better. I finally went into the crowd, and accidently ended up in the circle pit area, really close up to the stage. That was one of my best cncert experiences though. Oh yeah, Shadows Fall played...brace yourself....."The Light that Blinds"!!!!! And then Mudvayne were really good. I stood in the back, because I was exhausted from Shads. Even though I hate most of that type of music, I like Mudvayne. They put on a great show. I love their first album. All in all, In Flames and Shadows Fall were unmatched.
Right when Mudvayne ended(about 11:00 pm) it started raining. It was the perfect way to end a concert.

Gene Hoglan could easily nail every single note that Martin has ever played. It's nothing against Lopez; I love his style, and he's a fantastic drummer. However, quite simply, Hoglan isn't human. I would be surprised if there was anything that he CAN'T do on the drumset. As an example, he recorded all of the drum tracks for the last SYL record (featuring some very insane playing), in about 2 days.
However, I read somewhere that they got someone else as a permanent replacement, so I'm not sure. As for what I've heard, Martin is very sick...some sort of blood disease that he's had for a very long time. He may not be back until the end of this year...which sucks.

That's very sad. :(
I think Opeth could do with more virtuoso drumming, though. There's opportunities for soul-crushing on "Ghost Reveries" that get missed I think, because of Lopez's mostly heavy rock/jazz-type drumming. Although I would hate to see Lopez replaced. He made Opeth what they are in the latter days.

Yeah, on the DVD they shows Akerfeldt basically telling Lopez how he wants the drums to sound and Lopez just does whatever he is told. But still, the guy has been a member of Opeth for so long, so it just seems kind of wrong. I guess I always think of a band being like a brotherhood more than a job, so it seems like they'd be kicking out a family member. Their music could be so much better with a different drummer though.

The biggest loss would be on Opeth's softer side. Lopez's playing on the Dam nation record was AWESOME, which part of the reason why it's one of my favorites by the band (I AM a drummer, after all :p ). He's more of a groove/feel player, and he tends to leave his parts pretty open...which allows him alot of room to improvise live. I really like that style of playing, and it's an approach that is sorely missed in the heavy metal field. Make no mistake about it, Lopez is exceptional.

I agree with Johan DeFarfalla lines, they were really unique. This new album is the first time I really heard Mendez really shine, and I have hope that he can match Defarfalla's lines.
On the drumming side, I prefer Lopez over Nordin by a mile. Nordin was alright, but Lopez has such a feel to drumming that absolutely cannot be matched. I mean listen to his snare rolls and how he adds touch with them to the rest of his drumming.

I'm just not totally sure about this... I saw Hoglan in Orlando at SOTU, and something about his playing in the Drapery falls was off. Well I finally found my lyric booklet, and I thought I'd give the Ghost Reveries concept a shot.
Ghost of Perdition: A demon deceives a woman by promising her hope, possesses her, and slowly drains the life from her as her son watches.
The Baying of the Hounds: The demon next tries to attack the son, this time by destroying any hope he has in love, his dreams, and beliefs, offering himself as an answer. This gradually erodes his resistance until the man is willing to accept anything.
Beneath the Mire: The demon takes control over him, and the possession starts to destroy him.
Atonement: He realizes what he has become and regrets it.
Reverie/Harlequin Forest: Description of his path to atonement. He can't bring himself to confess, and constantly struggles with his possession. The weakest hope drives him forward in spite of self-doubt that makes him wonder whether he will ever find redemption.
Hours of Wealth: He rids himself of the possession, but finds that he can't connect with the world and return to normal life.
The Grand Conjuration: He relapses, conjures the demon, and willingly accepts it.
Isolation Years: He reads a letter his lover Rosemary sent him in a last attempt to reach him, but realizes that he's too far gone.
^^^^Thats a good guess. A **** good guess. But I heard that Mikael said that he didnt write any concept, unless he is lying I think that any links are purely coincidental.
Also I remeber Opeth saying in an interview that a band they were sharing the studio with though the keyboards where out of a Uriah Heep song. Any one gonna take a stab at what song they think it was? I reckon the start of baying of the hounds, thats pretty Heepish.
Well, Isolation Years doesn't have anything to do with the concept apparently, but everything else seems dead on.

^^^^Thats a good guess. A **** good guess. But I heard that Mikael said that he didnt write any concept, unless he is lying I think that any links are purely coincidental.
Huh, that's weird then, the songs seem to follow each other so logically, as if they were a part of a storyline that went through the whole album. After looking at the album that way, I don't think I'll ever be able to see it as not having a concept.
Dammit, listen to me! There is a concept, he said so in the bio on the site. Isolation Years has nothing to do with the rest of the album though.

I just downloaded their new album "Ghost Reveries" and it is pretty awesome. But after I listened to it for a while, I was drawn back to the classic Opeth songs like In The Mist She Was Standing, Black Rose Immortal, Harvest...well...actually, their are many.
But yeah, Opeth's definitely becoming a very influential band for the metal industry.

Sorry for ignoring ya Creeping_Deth :p.
That makes me feel better that there actually is a concept, and that I'm not just seeing connections where none exist...except I guess the one between Isolation Years and the rest of the album. You're right about that one though, it seems very random compared to everything else. I was just trying to think of it in a way that would connect it to everything else.
Here's what I think about Opeth's contribution with their major label debut of "Ghost Reveries."
They are a band that has earned fans in the most important way possible. The brilliance of Akerfeldt and the shifts in genres the band has done defies belief, especially for a band with a decade-plus career behind them. And with
Ghost Reveries, they have done something very important: they have more clean passages than growl sections, but all elements are equal in skill. I believe Opeth are on the cusp of a new explosion of metal music into the mainstream, one devoid of all the recent trappings of the "sell-out." Why? Because Akerfeldt has one of the most accessible voices in metal HISTORY. For decades, heavy metal, for all its instrumental sophistication and sometimes blatant virtuosity, has never been given the credit it deserves for musical brilliance, shortchanged by fans and critics time and time again--because metal vocalists, PARTICULARLY the ones that sing, are generally AWFUL. The bane of metal's ability to be taken seriously is its pretentious lyrics and awful vocal styles. Akerfeldt has none of these qualities: as one of the most superb death growlers and singers in his genre, he is poised to break out on a tremendous level and take a whole slew of Opeth-inspired bands with him, every one pushing the envelope of creativity and following their ethos of change and progression. The American Wave of Heavy Metal will be written off as a retread combination of nu metal politics and Iron Maiden's music style. Opeth will own the first half of the 21st century's metal music, and it will be an amazing period for metal music because finally people will realize that there is true genius at work within the genre. And all it took was a good singer.

As nice as that sounds, I hope it does not come true. I have no problem with Opeth doing whatever they want, but man... if every band that started popping out like all these metalcore bands sounded like Opeth... that may be good, but... it takes away from Opeth.

Yeah. I mean, Opeth is our band, and many other bands have basically been ruined by the 'mallcore' kids getting a interested in them so they could seem cool to the metalhead crowd. Opeth better not end up like that.

Bands like Opeth can't just "pop out" so you shouldn't have to worry. If Opeth does become an influence to many bands, then I don't see a problem.

As long as its not that heavy of an influence. I meen like, ok so some metal bands start to use acoustics a bit more, maybe have some less harsh vocals.... as long as its not to much like Opeth.

Opeth is so technically advanced, it would be very hard for anyone to come within a mile of their godliness.

It's not the band's fault if poser mall rats start liking them. :-/
I really can't see how Opeth providing an influence on bands is a bad thing.
I also think you guys are being a little shortsighted in your estimation of what precise thing that bands will steal from Opeth. Lots of metal bands already have acoustic sections, and Opeth certainly weren't cashing in on acoustics' accessability when they decided to use them.

The fanboy is wrong.
You have to realize that none of thier music relies on technicality and just pure emotion. You are right about one thing though, that it is hard to match the inspiration and songwriting talent that they posess.
The only bad thing I can see coming from this is that a new fake genre called acoustic-core comes up.

I have to admit, I wasn't all that impressed my first listen through the CD. The stand out songs were "Hours of Wealth" and "Isolation Years", the soft songs on the album. I knew I'd like it a lot more with another listen or two, and I'm really really loving "Ghost of Perdition" now. This album takes a bit of effort from the listener IMO, so if you aren't a big fan of the new album yet, give it another few listens, this is Opeth after all. :thumb:

Exactly. I think that Opeth are doing what bands have been TRYING to do for a very long time. The whole loud/quiet.....heavy/melodic etc thing has been tried over and over again by countless bands, especially in nu-metal. Most of the time what you ended up with, however, was that the band would lose steam as soon as they dropped into whichever their weaker point was. Then Opeth comes along, a band that is equally strong both in heavy and in soft sections...I mean, any death metal band that could release an album like Dam nation and have it kick that much *** is going to stand the test of the time, if you ask me.
You know listening to the new album for about the 10th time I think Opeth has finally overtaken Tool on my favourite bands list (to take second spot.) I still love Tool but Opeth have been kickicking *** for 8 albums straight, thats just something phenominal.
Queen is my number one though, but its close.

As has been said, you're wrong. They are tehcnically good, but even some metalcore bands are just as technical, maybe even more so. There talent lies in their originality and atmosphere more than their technicality. They are the only band I've ever heard that have such a depressing atmosphere without using heavy keyboards and effects.
It's not the band's fault if poser mall rats start liking them. :-/

I didn't mean it would be there fault. I just don't want to be bothered by the average mall kid who doesn't really have any clue about music, and just ride a band's success. I dont't really see it happening though.
Yep I think it's more the songwriting.... I can play a lot of Opeth stuff on guitar but actually putting thought into writing is another story.

That will probably change the more you listen to Opeth. I thought Opeth was boring a repetitive teh first time I heard them, but they grew on me. Now they are by far my favorite band.
Opeth > Queen > Tool
I seriously don't understand the Tool obsessions. They are original and have some great songs, but I could never get into them. They aren't anywhere near as technical as people think they are either.

I saw Opeth last night and they didn't dissapoint me at all. Mikael was fantastic as were the rest of the band but he has a great presence on stage and also communicates with the crowd really well. Actually I was a little dissappointed that Martin Lopez was still ill, as the stand in guy didn't play the last section of Deliverance quite how Lopez does...but he had pretty much everything else nailed. Apart from on Blackwater Park where he played too many measures of intro.
Having gone off Opeth for a while seeing them has got me enjoying the music again now. The Grand Conjuration was bad ***. Face of Melinda too.
Is anyone else seeing them on this tour?
Whoa, they played BWP and Face Of Melinda? Awesome!
I'm seeing them November 11th.

The bridge to Mordecai alone is worth the money. Alaska is a little diefferent than The Silent Circus. Less clean vocals and it's definetly their heaviest album by far. It's very good though.

That's pretty much how I went. I still don't like the growling vocals, but I can kind of tune them out and dig the rest of the music. And I'm still happy when he uses his incredible clean voice for a good purpose.
Ghost Reveries debuted at #64 in the US. Seems rather low if you ask me.

For a death metal band, I'd imagine that's more like record-breakingly high. Although I don't know anything about how the charts or whatever work.
