Swarming towards the true insects
Feasting on buried dreams
And spreading decay upon your skin
His eyes spew forth a darkness
That cut through and paralyze
Casts light upon your secrets
Forced to confront your enemies"
I love that!Especially the last 2 lines.

Granted, Opeth are signed with Roadrunner now, and even if I don't totally like that choice, their stuff should be a little easier to find now.
Best Buy has stocked most of their albums since Deliverance came out, and there's another record store down the street that will definately have it, there shouldn't be a problem. But, yeah, it probably will be more widely available under Roadrunner.

I went to Sam Goody today just to be sure to get it tomorrow. I was looking around and I saw 5 different Opeth CDs in stock. It blew my mind since they only ever have BWP and the D's.
Then I saw a Porcupine Tree CD that wasn't In Absentia or Deadwing. Another shock. I bought Up the Downstairs :D.
I get to check out and the cashier has heard of and enjoys both PT and Opeth. It was the first time I have met anyone who likes either without me whoring the bands to them first.
It made me happy.
... and then I remembered I was going to get a new Opeth album the next day.

Whoa, check it:
Sweden's OPETH have posted the following message on their official web site:
"Roadrunner Records has set the release date for 'Ghost Reveries' on the 29th of August (Europe and world) + 30th of August for North America. The record will be released on regular CD, double vinyl as well as a later limited edition hardback deluxe CD! A shorter edit version of 'The Grand Conjuration' will see a single release in the near future. Included on the disc is the edit version as well as the full 10-minute + version and another edit of the 'Ghost of Perdition' track. A video for 'The Grand Conjuration' (edit) was also shot in Los Angeles/USA with director Bill Yukich.
"OPETH recently returned home from the first ever Sounds of the Underground North American tour where the band shared the stage with LAMB OF GOD, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, CLUTCH, GWAR and more. During the first weeks of the tour Martin Lopez became seriously ill and had to fly back home to Sweden for treatment. He's currently under supervision and is doing well and we hope for a swift recovery and return to his natural habitat....behind the drums. Legendary basher Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DEATH, TESTAMENT and more) filled in for Lopez during the Sounds of the Underground tour for the last 16 gigs as well as participating in the video shoot for 'The Grand Conjuration'. A temporary replacement has been found in BLOODBATH/WITCHERY/NIFELHEIM drummer Martin Axenrot, who will take over Lopez duties until he's fully recovered.
"Norwegian prog metallers EXTOL has been confirmed as support for the upcoming September European tour. A third band is likely to be added to the bill as well. Another European tour will take place in November/December and will be more extensive than the imminent September tour.
"Legendary BBC radio has invited OPETH for a recording session in December. This recording will then be aired on British radio in the near future. More details on this as it unfolds.
"Mikael Åkerfeldt has recorded vocals for a track destined for the upcoming Roadrunner 25 Years compilation CD. The song 'Roads' was written by TYPE O NEGATIVE keyboardist Josh Silver. Mikael recorded the vocals while on the Sounds of the Underground tour in Atlanta/Georgia with guitarist/now producer/engineer James Murphy. Mr. Murphy is currently working with the much talked about DEATH tribute CD, which will include appearances from Mikael Åkerfeldt ('Pull the Plug') as well as Martin Lopez and Martin Mendez and Peter Lindgren."

I kinda wish i held out and bought this album, it would have been more exciting probably. Oh well, i would have had to order the thing in and would have got it late. I really really really hope Opeth are going to tour Australia, i wasnt even a fan last time they came out.
Is anyone here not buying it today? It seems everyone's rushing out today.
What position do you think this will be on the Billboard charts? I'm guessing about #20 or so.
EDIT: I was reading the new entry in the Biography, this made me laugh.
Once we had decided on which label to sign with the negotiations started and obviously we in the band are ****ing bums and we don't know **** about contracts. Yeah, fact is, Road Runner is a great label, save bands like Nickelback, plus they'll bring more attention to an actually good band, and unlike Bodom and Cradle, Opeth consists of dedicated musicians, so even if they get popular, they'll still keep making great music.

Any ideas on what the concept might be if there even is one?
So far all I have drawn out from it is that it is about being possesed by demons or something of that matter.
Ghost of Perdition-I think this is where the Demon takes the mother but leaves her son to live a full life.He only does this to give him more to lose once he does finally take him into his possession aswell.
Baying of the Hounds-This is where the demon(s) calls for him to join him.The character attempts to resist them but in the end has to give everything up to join them.
"And so, cold touch now inhumane
Every waking hour
Awaiting a reverie to unfold
And now they are calling me
Louder by the minute
The baying of the hounds
Calling me back to my home"
Beneath the Mire-This is where he finally gives in and is now in complete possession. In this he experiences pain and anguish that were unimagined, but thrives on it.
Thats all I got.I'm pretty high right now, so I dont really know if I made any sense.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a concept. Look on Opeth's site for the new chapter in the biography section. Mike just said that a lot of the lyrics had to do with occult themes so it isn't really a story.
This the first time I've heard it, because I held out until it was officially released.
Wow. Blew me away. This is some of their best material ever, no doubt. Favorites for me are Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, and..the one right before Harlequin Forest, I can't recall the name. Very haunting record. I love the keyboards, too.

Also just bought it here... I'm suprised there isn't a real band photo in the notes, just that drawing which is good though. I dunno, guess I kinda expected something really odd with the notes now that there with RR but I'm glad they stuck with their traditional art for the CD cover and notes. I love how most of the newer albums have different colors and text colors actually on the CD and Damnation was white and this one is completely black, to me it seems it is how the CD is viewed as either light and soft (white for Damnation) or dark and brutal (black with black text for Ghost Reveries). Wow that was extremely random sorry guys, I'll finish with saying this album is no disappointment for me!
...And white for BWP...

I am a huge Opeth fan, probably like most of you, but I have to say I was a little bit let down. Scratch that, I was pretty let down, a lot of Ghost of Perdition reminded me a lot of Tool's The Grudge (Lateralus) the riffs sounded just like that one. I thought I would never be disappointed by them, but my foot is now in my mouth. I will give it some more time to "grow" on me, so hopefully I won't have to close the book on Opeth after being such a diehard for so long. But I guess one bad album is alright considering how many sterling albums they have in their catalogue. Another thing, what's up with Mikael's new soft voice?! Totally caught me off guard, anyone else putoff by that?

That never surprised me, Mikael's always done clean vocals.
This new album's heavier, but at the same time much more proggish. I like the combo :). So far meeting my expectations for another masterpiece. I'm also enjoying the permanent addition of the keys/mellotron ^^.

I know the clean vocals have always been there but they changed for a much, much more melodic almost mainstream sound it went from like classic Opeth for a brief instance to something that Radiohead Thom Yorke almost. If your talking about the first soft vocals in Ghost of Perdition and how they sound somewhat "happy" then I know what you mean, although I still love them they sound akward there at first but now I've listened through it quite alot and all I can say is that Opeth is Opeth, they continue to suprise us in new ways although at first it might seem hard to like... hey, I never even used to like growling but I just loved something about BWP (the song) so much that I kept listening and before I knew it I was hooked on Mikael's awesome growling ability, this man deserves alot of respect for his talent!
I like all the clean singing on the album except for Atonement. I think that's the weakest song on the album.

I agree, it's one of my favourite songs on the album. It might be because it's the song that's been most influenced by prog. It sounds like it goes furtherest from what Opeth has typically sounded like.

I still think it's a concept album. If anyone has noticed he mentions other song titles in other songs. I'm still working on figuring it out to see if all of them fit together or just some.

Yeah, I also thought it was a concept album, but now after reading the diary on the site where he mentions that isolation years isn't part of the concept.. I think it's more like a concept album with a bonus track :p

I'm not so sure about a storyline, but it is a concept album in that all the songs were inspired by occult themes. And the cover art is great.

Alright, having listened to the entire album now whilst making my rounds this evening I retract my previous comments (a good majority of them). It was far less the disappointment I had thought it to be, just something less than expected-the joys of anticipation, eh?
-The "happy" clean is a definite no-no in my book, it really bugs me for some reason.
-This album seems to lack a lot of the chilling melancholy emotion that all the other albums exude and that real sense of brilliance, etc, etc. The subtle intro just doesn't do it for me either, they could have picked a stronger intro song.
But it's a fair album and it's good to hear from an old friend. So cheers to Opeth, once again. Just need to learn to accept this album for what it is.
EDIT: Oh yeah, album art was kind of tacky on this one. Far more fitting to someone such as Cradle of Filth with all the religious imagery and statues. They're slowly getting better with their album art. I think it would have faired much better with the illustration designs they sent out for before the album was even in progress. The stippling/mosaic of the band is nice, I really like that. The illustration credit goes to Anthony Sorrento, nothing came up when I searched so I guess his entrance actually got accepted or something?

I basically took a month off from reading this opeth thread and other opeth related forums/discussions because "Ghost Reveries" was leaked and I did not want to be spoiled period, other than what Roadrunner had officially released (2 tracks). And it has PAID OFF big time.
So I went around my town for 4 different stores looking for the lowest price and got it for $14.99. Oh man, the first listen to Ghost Reveries, and I AM ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY! Every song has something good about it.
So far my favorite is "The Baying Of The Hounds," It has very nice progressions and melodies, and the ending asbolutely RULES.
When I first heard The Grand Conjuration, I was a bit disappointed because of the repetitive riffs and basically the same mood throughout the entire 10 min, but after listening to "Ghost Of Perdition," I had a lot of hope for this album and it has come true! Thank you Opeth for making amazing music! I look forward to listening to this album a billion times in the coming weeks. I highly suggest you guys purchase this if you haven't.

So.... after having listened to Ghost Reveries at least 6 times now, I can safely say WOW THIS ALBUM IS GREAT!
The first few listens I thought, yeah this is good, but I wasn't entirely convinced. However, partway through my third listen something just clicked. Everything is just so right, and this album also seems very progressive.
Akerfeldt's voice, both clean and growled, is superb on this album.

Still Life, because I think its more upbeat.
Also, compare Godhead to TBOTH. Very similar.
I would say it's like a cross between Still Life and BWP, though some parts and songs are so outside the scope of normal Opeth, you really can't compare them.
It has the album feel of Still Life, yet the heaviness of the riffs of BWP.

Is that Dredg upload the Orph EP, as if it is I can cancel the upload I've got going now...no matter how much you guys bought Ghost Reveries for, it's guaranteed to be a better deal than the UK. I buy most of my CDs second hand off amazon, and they still cost about $10 or $12 on average. The prices in the stores here are just completely out of control. Just out of interest, what Opeth album do you guys think it sounds most like so far?
I hear some stuff on it that's right out of SL or BWP, but a lot of it sounds different than anything else they've done, in my opinion.

I found something odd on opeth.com. Atonement is listed as "5:20" long, a full 1:08 shorter than the album, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest is listed as 1:08 longer on the site. The ending of Atonement is really supposed to be the beginning of Reverie...a little bit of a mess up, eh? Doesn't really affect the album too much though
Atonement is 5:20 on my CD player.
The 1:08 is just a little lead-in to Reverie/Harlequin Forest that happens inbetween the tracks.

Computers (mine at least) show Atonement as a 6:28 song. The ending seems like it's dragging the song out if you don't realize it's supposed to be an intro/interlude

^He definately is, the Opeth.com lists track 5 as 12:39, the combined total of that interlude and Harlequin forest. I just can't figure why the distributed cds would have the negative time track spacing as opposed to grouping the songs by the correct names.
Anyway, watch this post for my CEP2.0'd version of Reverie/Harlequin forest rejoined together. If requested I'll mix down the shortened version of Atonement and upload that as well.

All I did was cut the end section out of 'Atonement', insert it into 'Harlequin Forest', mix it down, and added a slight fade to that repeating riff at the very end of it.
If anybody wants the 5:20 version of 'Atonement' also, I'll get around to YSIing it tomorrow.

It's not neccessarily meant to be the beginning or end of a track, its just meant to be there. And it's not a mastering error, cause things dont just end up on negative time when someone screws up. It's simply a segue between the two songs that was given it's own little part on the album without giving it it's own track.

For me, it is like Blackwater Park's sister album. I can just sense so many similarities between the two, and it feels like Deliverance and Damnation didn't happen (not in a negative way, but this album seems the natural progression from Still Life and BWP).

they releaed a single too on blackwater park
the drapey falls was a cut down radio-edited version of the song, but did Opeth go commercial on us since BWP?
I don't think we have anything to fear
tomorrow they have a signing session for Ghost Reveries in town here in Sockholm. can't wait ;)

I dont think we have anything to fear, and i think people who accuse them of going commercial are insulting them really, after 15 years of existance or however long its been, there is still no other band on the planet sound anything like they do, and they still manage to stay fresh, people might not like the newer stuff as much as say morningrise, but you just have to step back and accept that theyre evolving, (btw this isnt a rant at you, i was just using your quote as a starting point! :p )

Can anyone tell me the real reason they kicked Johan out of the band because his bass playing on Morning and Orchid is beyond godly not techiniqly but just intresting lines.

well, what can I say, I ttotaly agree with you.
at first I was a bit afraid they would sell-out because of Roadrunner, but really, having released 7 ( now 8) albums of high standards and still being unique made me decide to change my point of view :)

i'm going to see them live next wed! wooooooo! cant wait, not seen them live before, they are pretty much my favourite band (depending on my listening mood!) makes me laugh when you read their biography on their website, and they just say yeah we just got together and threw some stuff togther on the day, their songs are great, you can listen to them over and over and still hear something new after loads of listens, yeah i dont think roadrunner is selling out, i think it'll just get them the respect they deserve, at the end of the day, if your a band you just want as many people to be able to hear your music as possible, and roadrunner will allow that to happen, i have no doubt that they'll stay true to themselves

Let no one fear that Opeth has sold out. This album is amazing. Just downloaded "Ghost Reveries" off of iTunes, and it's friggin' great.

Man... this concept is a bit harder to figer out then Still Life was... Still Life I pretty much got it on first listen. But this one is a bit deeper I think... Has anyone else figered anything out? (except the fact that it has to do with being chased by hounds possibly in a forest called Harlequin...)

It has to do with occult themes, black magic, stuff like that. The Grand Conjuration is about a black mass, I haven't examined most of the lyrics though.
What are the concepts of some of their albums?
Darkness

Still Life is about a man coming home after being banned from his village for 15 years to find a girl he fell in love with, stuff happens, and the girl agrees to elope with him. Shes killed due to crimes against her husband and the main character is hung.
MAYH is something about a man dieing and watching his wife slowly forget about him or something like that.
And yeah I know it has to do with occult themes, but is there some kind of story, similar to these?

I'm starting to get a hint for what the GR story is. It seems to be about a self righteous individual's steady decline into moral decay. Eventually, the character makes some sort of unholy pact....for what reason, I haven't been able to ascertain. There seems to be alot of sentiments of dam nation ( ;) ) and atonement ( ;) ), though.

It wouldn't be very polite to play Opeth songs to friends who don't like it...the vocals are a bit much. I was addicted to Godhead's Lament today (just for the acoustic middle section, really) and my roommate kept coming in while it was playing. I don't think he digs death screams.

My friends are all very open-minded about music. None of them are a fan of the death growls, but some of them like the rest of the music. I don't have many real friends though. Friends to me, basically translates into anyone that I regularly jam with
The Baying Of The Hounds for sure. Though Beneath The Mire is a close second.

On "Ghost Of Perdition" is spectacular.
The Grand Conjuration video is friggin' creepy. It reminded me of a Rammstein video, where it's all scary and weird and then something downright goofy just pops in (a toilet? Come on. I thought this song was about someone summoning Satan)

I've been hooked on Reverie/Harlequin Forest lately. The part where Mikael sings:
It is all false pretension
Harlequin forest
Awaiting redemption for a lifetime
As they die alone
With no one by their side
Are they forgiven?
Pure gold.

The guitar parts to those lyrics really remind me of Morningrise and the other earlier albums. But yeah, that's an awesome song.
