I'd have to wait to wait until next year to be able to go to those gigs. I'm glad the highest Canada goes is 19+ :D
Has anyone heard anything about a tour for GR?
They should do another American tour, I only got to see them once at SotU.

At sounds of the underground, they played 4 songs, which was more then I expected.
Anyways right before the 2nd last song Mike said "We will definatly come back and do our own tour here... you see, normally we play about 20...MILLION HOURS a night!" And everyone started laughing... it was the best day of my life. :D

Only 45 mins but in one city they got extended time. I think they played for 1:30 there. That was my first time seeing them and they were amazing, and I want more!

They played Deliverance, The Grand Conjuration, To Rid The Disease, and then Demon Of The Fall... it was awesomely good. They said they got wasted at "that big mall you guys got", which meens West Edmonton Mall. (Alberta, Canada)

Does anyone want to put together some Opeth covers? Preferably "Windowpane" and "To Bid You Farewell". I'm a bassist and I might be able to vocals.
Uhh, I'm all set, I have most of an 10:30 instrumedley recorded already, I'm just seeing if there is any interest in this thread from any true Opeth fans to hear it. I'll definately post it in the guitar forum, but if you guys are interested I'll give you first dibs with a three-four minute demo. The song order is 'A Fair Judgement' until after the acoustic break, 'The Drapery Falls' until after the first solo, then the 'Deliverance' intro into the acoustic break and opening theme of 'Demon of the Fall' out of order. What do you guys think?

Excuse my ignorance, but I seen someone in the "Introduce Yourselves" thread saying they were listening to a song from the new Opeth album. Yes I have, and that thing is a beast, but it isn't really the feel I'm going for. I'm hoping to create one normal sized Opeth song from a handful of their other ones, to make one complete, flowing song. Anyway, here's the first installment, the part from 'A Fair Judgement':

It's not bad, the only thing that really bothered me was the first transition. That part from A Fair Judgement progresses very gradually, and jumping in with the next song when the acoustic part has just gotten started it breaks the flow of the song. Other than that, you've put it together well, and the parts fit together nicely.

I posted a song that was a 20 minute Opethesque epic by Soundsleep. One of the guys in that band posted his band's song on the Opeth forums ages ago. It has some very nice acoustic breaks like Opeth.
http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=37808
Here is a site with 3 of their 4 songs that I have of them. All 3 are prog rock and AWESOME. They don't compare with Opeth's acoustic stuff style wise, but I would buy anything if Soundsleep released anything. But as far as I know, it's just some band that probably won't go anywhere. :(
I suggest anyone in this thread to at least download "Amity Between Life and Death"

April Ethereal? And they sound like Opeth? Well, the name couldn't have been taken from the song since MAYH was released in 1998 and the band started in 1996. They actually started a year after Opeth released Orchid. I want to hear some of this bands earlier stuff, it would be really weird if Opeth and these guys developed the same sound concurrently.

Still Life or Morningrise. Still Life is better as a whole album, and as individual songs, with a great balance of heavy to light moments. Morningrise has killer dual guitar riffs with all songs being over ten minutes long (with Black Rose Immortal being over twenty[!]).
Ughh, I forgot about Morningrise. Brilliant album. Black Rose Immortal and To Bid You Farewell are two of my favorite Opeth songs.

They played "The Drapery Falls", "Demon of the Fall", one song that I for some reason forgot :(, and then they finished the set with "The Grand Conjuration". At the time, TGC wasn't released and I didn't even know the new album's release date. Mikael talking aobut the album for a sec and said it is released August 30th then said "it sounds something like this... this is called 'The Grand Conjuration'" and went straight into song. *shrug* More prog rock with metal influences...or you could just call it music.
Alot of the riffs at the end of Grand Conjuration are really ****ing cool.

I just heard after a long waiting period the infamous Black Rose Immortal.
meh..kinda dissapointed. I say anything before MAYH was kinda below par. But I guess it was a different genre back then. Anyway.
The new album rocks btw, At the mo I REALLY dig TBOTH and Harlequin Forest. Awesome riffs. I guess I like it so much because alot of the riffs on the new album remind of MAYH...<< my fav Opeth album ever.

'lo folks.. recently converted opeth fan and even more recent (as in now..1st post!) musicianforum'er.
my ears never really agreed with any form of metal until i heard opeth. the growls took a while to get used to but i love them now.. and the musicianship.. well.. it goes without saying.
i have yet to buy any albums but i have downloaded still life, blackwater park, da*mnation and (couldnt help it) ghost reveries. fkking brilliant. i'm well on my way to becoming obsessed ;p
fav tracks thus far, though they change daily (2 off each album i have heard)

Ghost of Perdition

Reverie/Harlequin Forest

Black Sabbath.....they created the genre, if it weren't for them there would be no opeth, because all the bands that inspired opeth would not exsist in their entity either
Sabbath wasn't that great actually.

Off Morningrise:

Sabbath wasn't that great actually.
Yes they were. Up until after Dio anyway.
I've heard Still Life, ****ation, and Ghost Reveries, I have Orchid, BWP, Morningrise and MAYH too but I haven't listened to them all that much yet.
Off Still Life:
Face of Melinda, Godhead's Lament, Moonlapse Vertigo own.
Off ****ation:
Windowpane, Death Whispered a Lullaby, and Closure stand out.
Ghost Reveries:
THE GRAND ****ING CONJURATION. The other songs are good, but they CANNOT step to this monster. The main riff owns every other metal riff you've ever heard. I wouldn't have minded if they had just played that riff for ten minutes.
And if you can't call Wedding Nails, Orchidia, Futile and the middle of Arriving Somewhere But Not Here metal, then NOTHING is metal.
Off Deliverance (since it was missed):
Deliverance
Wreath
By the Pain I see in Others
EDIT: I see Darkness of Greed did do it, but not in a vertical manner :p

I can't understand this lack of love for Grand Conjuration.
I loved it at first, then I heard Ghost of Perdition. GOP smokes TGC out of the water, IMO.
But those are the only two I've heard so far. So that isn't anything close to a full opinion yet.

GOP is probably the second best after TGC. I like the soft songs a lot, too. I dig that there isn't as much growling on this album as the others, though there are a few melodies I really dislike (the one on Harlequin forest where he's like Haaaaaaaaa-rlequin foooooooooo-rest...dunno how to describe it) and there's also a really lame riff in the middle of Grand Conjuration. Also the beginning riff of Beneath the Mire doesn't sound good to me, though the rest of the song is good.

whats opeths best song?
That would vary from fan to fan. Most of us change favorites quite a bit, but all their songs are amazing. I say start with "The Funeral Portrait" or "The Leper Affinity" as previously mention. The first song I ever heard by them was actually "Harvest" so I was under the assumption that they were a softer acoustic rock band. When I started checking them out with the album Blackwater Park, I put my 'WTF!' face on and soon fell in love.

That's the other part of what makes it cool. Their other songs, good as they are, start to sound kind of samey after a while, TGC is different.

Aye. For example, "The Funeral Portrait" was one of my favorite songs on BWP, mostly because it was the only song that didn't break into an acoustic section (I love those, don't get me wrong, but they don't have to do it EVERY time!), yet I hardly ever see it mentioned.

Best Buy is the greatest though, as long as you're not looking for anything too hard to find.

CD Plus (the place I go) is awesome, I get all my stuff there. Their even good for vinyls, except I couldn't find the new Lateralus vinyl there... :(
Does it cost much more than other places?

No, not at all. They often have lots of great deals to. And the people that work there are awesome.
I too have a reserved copy. The store already has the CDs out the back and I went down yesterday hopng they could sell me one before sunday, but no luck. **** bastards.

hehehe, I'm pretty much a newbie in this thread, but question:
What tuning does Opeth use on Blackwater Park (the song)? I have a guitarpro for that song, but it's in drop D (DADGBE/DADG) and I was thinking to myself "the mighty Opeth cannot POSSIBLY be using nu-metal drop D!" (lolz, stereotyping is fun)...so yeah.

There is nothing wrong with drop D... it's great when you want that evil sound (like in Demon of the Fall and BWP song)

Yeah I know, actually I heard that Ghost Reveries was in D tuning for most of the album, can anyone confirm this?
Just bought and listened to the whole album. VERY nice. Like everyone said the singing is different to anything they've done before, but stll awsome none the less. I loved The Grand Conjuration that song blew me away, I don't know what everyone was complainign about.

From what I've learned so far... yes. I can only play Baying of the Hounds in D and as well as some other riffs from different songs.

The first time I listened to that song I didn't like it at all, yet I find myself listening to it almost every morning on the way to work. It really grew on me.
The entire album was excellent...I wanted more ''Voilence'' on the album...but I can't complain, It's new, It's Opeth. :thumb:

^The lyrics to this album are breathtaking.Mikael really did an awesome job on the lyric writing for this album. They are so dark.I think they are about being possesed by demons or something.

I've only heard GoP and TGC. I can't wait.

Maybe I'm not. Anyway, I think I should skip school that day and sit at the record store waiting for it to open. I'd look like a loser, but I get my album right away ;)
I'm so desperately waiting for this album to come out I re-listened to Isolation Years on power tab atleast 5 times last night.

I know exactly where I could get it and could be listening to it in an hour if I really wanted to.
But, seeing as I bought the first 7 albums, a T-shirt and their DVD I'm going to wait and buy this one too.

Ah. You haven't heard Harlequin Forest, then.
Although I still hold that the acoustic section of "Godhead's Lament" is Mikael's best vocal work, I absolutely love Ghost Reveries.

Thought I'd provide some photos of what I picked up on Thursday. The T-shirt is signed by Mikael and Peter, and the piece of paper is signed by the whole band. I met them Mikael and Peter at the Hole in the Sky festival, outside a pub and got their signatures on the shirt, and later on I met the whole band on the airport terminal so I got them to sign my ticket too:D. I haven't listened to the album yet, but I know its going to blow me away. The Grand Conjuration was ****ing awesome live by the way.

Well, I held out, and actually went into town to buy it instead of ordering. Just had my first listen.
There are some definite magic moments, but it'll take a fair few more listens for it all to sink in. First impressions indicate that it stands up there with their best work, but as yet I'm not blown away. The Baying Of The Hounds rocks like a mother****er, though.
