There's no way I was gonna hold out for another month though.I know, IM WEAK!!!WEAK DAMNIT!!No willpower whatsoever.
Besides, it's my birthday today. What better birthday gift than the new Opeth cd?I can think of alot of things, like pussy :lol:But musically, Opeth is the best gift.
On to the album.Let me just kindly say "Jesus titty ****in Christ" what an album!!!It is simply AMAZING.Dont judge the album on those 2 songs.I just finished track 4 "Atonement" and already I'll say this is one of their best albums. It's just so awesome.Opeth did not disappoint.I will never doubt these guys ever again.

Wow, the whole album is available for download? You guys who download better be buying the real thing as well! I'm pretty confident I can hold off until the 30th. I have the Grand Conjuration to listen to, which has actually grown on me alot already. So in detail, how aweseome is the Reveries?
GoP is great, and can only hope that I can resist the temptation of hunting down a leak. I will be buying the album on the first day for sure though.

I saw them live in Vancouver last night (Sounds of the Underground), and they kicked ***, they played the Grand Conjuration, its just too bad that the set was so **** short, I hope they roll through town again for their own tour.

So many people talking about the new album...the suspense is maddening..I'm trying to wait until the 30th as well. What's it like? Everyone's saying it's good, but Opeth's consistently been putting out good music..saying it's good tells me nothing. I can't really describe it.It's very different, that's all I can really say. It's not black metal, but there are moments that would be considered BM I guess.
Every song on here is written so precisely(sp?).It is very evident from the beginning that they really took their time rehearsing and writing the songs to the perfect point. There are 3 songs that are all soft. They are all very different from any other soft track in previous albums.Somewhat strange.Hours of Wealth IMO is possibly the saddest Opeth song out of all.Mikeal delivers such an awesome vocal performance on it.Which can be said for the rest of the album.I think vocally, this cd is the best.Mike shines so bright.Everyone does. There is ambience all over the cd thanks to the new keyboards. They keyboards add so much to the music. So much beauty.
So far, Baying of the Hounds is my favorite song.It nearly moved me to tears. It's so perfect. The solo that comes in at about 7 mins is godly.

You have to extract .rar files. I'm guessing you don't have a program that will let you do that, you can try the one on this this site.

Hours of Wealth
Found a way
To rid myself clean of pain
And the fever thats been haunting me
Has gone away
Looking through my window, I seem to recognise
All the people passing by
But I'm alone, and far from home
and nobody knows me
Never heard me say goodbye
Never shall I speak to anyone again
All days are in darkness and I'm biding my time
Once I am sure on my task I will rise
Again

Well I dled it and I've gotten to Beneath Mire which is my favourite so far. I am very
impressed.
Also I was wondering about why that guy was filling in last night. That's the SYL drummer right? I remember looking and thinking whoaa he got so fat but then I remembered that SYL had a fat drummer and then realized that that was him. And later, when Mikael introduced him I couldn't hear what said about him (actually I couldn't hear most of the things he said during the show) so I don't know if he's a replacement or not. Regardless, he is an excellent drummer and pulled off everything perfectly.

Gene Hoglan is probably the best metal drummer on the planet. He's been in a score of groups over the years, most noteworthy being the band Death, where he performed on the Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic albums.
Of course, he's not Martin Lopez, and even though Hoglan is probably more technically skilled, I like how Lopez's particular style fits in with Opeth and would be very upset to see him leave.

He did the drums on my favorite Death album? Wow...so he did. I'm glad I got to meet him last week at the SOTU stop in AZ. Shame that SYL won't be coming back here for awhile.
On the new Opeth album...holy ****. This thing is awesome. The guitar part on Baying of the Hounds at 3:23-3:30 is evil. Between this and the new Nevermore, I'm going to be wearing my headphones for a month at least.

Well, I have just listen to Ghost of Perdition for the first time. I am impressed! The music Opeth creates will never let me down... But I can't ignore the vocal section around 5:55. It's VERY new for opeth... It sounds very new age, definatley something to get used to.. But the music and the rest of the song hands down is brilliant as always.
At first, the Grand Conjuration wasn't mind blowing for me... But now, I can't live without listening to it. It really is incredible. I can't wait to hear the rest! Atonement has gotten some good vibes from you guys, as has Baying of the Hounds... Of the songs that you all that have downloaded, is there alot of new vocal stylings to get used to compared to the norm? Just curious. I just can't wait to hear more. I'll be around. Later guys-

Oh god... That Martin article scares the $hit out of me... Martin Lopez is my alltime favortie drummer... His style is so original.. He always has a new beat, and is completley and utterly amazing... I'm going to be very depressed if this is true... Gene was good, but he didn't really suit Opeth's music. He did the basics to cover the songs, but he didn't do the same rythmic feels and didn't use any of Lopez' snare drum tactics...

Ghost of Perdition - 10:29
The Baying Of The Hounds - 10:41
Beneath The Mire - 7:57
Atonement - 6:28
Reverie/Harlequin Forest - 11:39
Hours Of Wealth - 5:20
The Grand Conjuration - 10:21
Isolation years - 3:51
That's what I got.
Mine are exactly the same. Both Atonement and Reverie/Harlequin Forest cut off abruptly like Closure and Serenity Painted Death. We wont know if that's intentional until the official release comes out.So far:
1.Ghost of Perdition-Awesome.Most of you have heard it by now.
2.Baying of the Hounds-My favorite. So amazing.Flows together so good.It has such a great grove in the beginning.Totally headbangable. The first set of clean vocals feature a 3 part harmony. It goes off into a very trippy and somewhat creepy synth part.At first I thought it was "Beneath the Mire" because he says just that, "Beneath the Mire".But I'm certain it is Baying of the Hounds. It's the first lyric. The solo that comes in at 7 mins will make you cry(well, maybe not, but its still awesome). The acoustic part afterward sounds like the last acoustic section in Face of Melinda.
3.Beneath the Mire-Alot of synth.Sick *** intro.Preceded with the great growling we all came to love. Then it goes into clean vocals followed by a clean section.I'll tell you, this album features Mikael's best clean vocals IMO.He's developed quite a singing ability over the years.
4.Atonement-Fully soft track.Such a strange song.Very 60's like Det Notship said.Alot of piano playing.Has a great outro.
5.Reverie/Harlequin Forest-It's a heavy track with mostly clean vocals. But god they sound so awesome. The acoustic riffs are sooooooooooo freakin godly. The outro riff is reminicent of the outro riff on Deliverance.Only much more tricky. It has a crazy odd time signature to it.
6.Hours of Wealth-Another softy. It's such a meloncholy bleak song.Mikael basically sings acapella with a piano.I think the song is actually about a ghost reverie. It sounds like he's a ghost that gets illusions of being surrounded by people he knows and being home. But then he snaps out of it and realizes that he's actually far from home and alone.Never to talk or see anyone ever again.Really sad song. The keyboards add such a great beauty to the song.
7.The Grand Conjuration-You've all heard it.No need for review or description.
8.Isolation Years-This is the shortest song. It's the last of 3 full soft songs.Probably the best one. This one could have easily been on Damnation. No more Melinda, as the female subject is named Rosemary. This song sounds like a suicide note almost. It's the perfect way to cap off a perfect album.

As far as I've gathered from the lyrics, this is a concept album.. Isn't it?
I think it might be....for example, the transition from Baying of the Hounds to Beneath the Mire.
Fantastic record, though. For those of you who are waiting until the 30th...it will be worth it. For those of you who chose the darkside like me....I don't blame you. ;)
This may be a little preemptive, but Ghost Reveries may be Opeth's best record to date. As far as what I like about the band, it has everything++.

I disagree. After reading interveiws and everything, I was expecting it to be their best, but I was let down. Now don't get me wrong, it's really good, but it's just another Opeth album. It's very unlikely that it will ever surpass MR or BWP for me.
I wanted a booming close to the album. I mean a punch children in the face kind of ending. Isolation Years is a nice song, but it doesn't seal the deal really.

I somewhat agree with Det Nosnip.I wasn't even expecting this to be at the same calibur of SL or BWP.I remember seeing interviews where Mikael would say that ****ation was the band's best album. It sure is a lovely album, but in my eyes it pales in comparison to some of the previous albums.I was fearfull that he was gonna take Opeth toward's that more stripped down approach that Steven Wilson brought to the table that is evident on ****ation and some of BWP and Deliverence.
Not only that, it's also their 8th album. Most bands put out their best albums much earlier in their career.I was really expecting Opeth to be at the ceiling as far as their creative zone is concerned.I was really expecting them to fall into a niche and just do the same stuff over.
I was sooooo proven wrong. Not is this one of the best(if not the best, but as Det said, it may be too soon to really say.For all I know I'm just on an Opeth high right now that will soon go down.), but it is also the most creative and expansive records. They cover so many different styles on this album. It's all over the place, but it flows so well.Every instrument is brought up to another degree.Everyone in the band brought their best performance.
They signed a deal with a big "mainstream" lable and everyone expected them to either make their worst album, or just flat out go nu metal or metalcore or whatever these kids listen to these days. They did the total opposite of that.I think they will always go against the grain and will continue to do the opposite of what people think they will do.I will never doubt Mike and the boys ever again.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the reason Steven Wilson didn't produce this album, was because Mikael wanted the music to be all his work.. Unlike the other albums where sometimes Steven had a huge part in writing some of it? A big reason Blackwater Park sounds so good as it does, is because of Steven Wilsons magical ears

I think i'm still getting over the fact we will never hear another MAYH or SL again. Remember the acoustics that were almost medieval? Ever since BWP and incidentally Mr S. Wilson producing, that mystical part of Opeth has dissapeared. ****ation was a nice album. The acoustics in that album do not hold a candle to the acoustic segments in Face Of Melinda, When, Under The Weeping Moon, To Bid You Farewell.
Opeth are a highly polished machine now. So far i'm liking what I've heard acoustically. The brutal moments sound almost meshuggah/toolish anyone agree?

Opeth changed a lot their style after Still Life. Hiring Steve Wilson as a producer improved the sound quality in their albums, gave them some great influences but the the acoustic parts in their works werent IMO that good comparing with those at Orchid (Apostle in Triumph, Twilight is my robe etc) and also Opeth stopped being as dark they were in albums like MAYH which is by the way Mikael's favourite

The words "change" and "different" are in the very definition of an Opeth album. Just another Opeth album means it's like any other release- awesome, but different.
I'm not trying to say it's a "once you heard this, you heard 'em all", because no Opeth album is like the rest.

I've been reading people talk about how different the acoustic sections were on earlier albums and how they miss those parts. All I can think is; guys, everything is different from album to album!!! The only two Opeth albums that sound similar are Orchid and Morningrise (and that's because some of Morningrise was intended to be on Orchid!)
Orchid and Morningrise were very twin-guitar-like and had some fairly poor transitions in them. Both are fantastic albums
My Arms, Your Hearse doesn't hardly sound like the same band!!! It's like Mikael said, "Okay, I can do twin guitar harmony, but I'm going to write the most brutal riffs I can possibly come up with!" MAYH is one of the most unique Opeth albums; it almost doesn't even sound like the same band! However, nothing medieval in the clean stuff (I don't consider it so, at least).
Still Life did have very medieval sounding acoustic parts, but that completely fits the concept! It's written about that sort of time period. The riffs in this album are nowhere near as brutal as the ones on MAYH. To me, they sound like they're swinging all over the place (in a good way!!!).
BWP has some incredibly brutal riffs on it (IMHO), but in a very similar style to those on Still Life. Nothing medieval about the heavy or clean riffs on this album. The longest clean part on the album (except the instrumental) is in the song Blackwater Park. It is very haunting and moody, but not medieval.
****ation was it's own album, and Deliverance was all about being brutal. The acoustic parts were typically precursors to a heavy riff or very weird and spacey. The acoustic section in the song Deliverance right before the outro riff is *almost* medieval, but still not quite there.
I don't write all this as though you guys have never heard the albums; that's obviously not the case. I just think that the only Opeth album that sounds truly medieval is Still Life. And every single Opeth album sounds completely unique in itself in both heavy and clean styles. That's what makes Opeth so great!!! I dunno; it's all oppinion anyway. This is just mine :)

One thing I just recently noticed(or at least actually payed attention to)about MAYH is how no song on there reaches the 10 minute mark.Pretty interesting considering the shortest song on the album before it is 10:09(Nectar).I wonder what the fan reaction to that was back then.
I DON'T CARE I WANT THE ACOUSTICS BACK BECAUSE THEY RULE HARDER THAN BORING "CLEAN GUITARS."
I don't want Opeth sounding like Pink Floyd when they go clean, I want them sounding like Steve Howe doing Roundabout. :D
EDIT: I'm not really as close-minded in general as the above statement would indicate, only when it comes to Opeth. ;)

Sheesh... Sounds better than whan I saw them! I saw Opeth in Orlando... Well. First off. They had no sound check. They all came out, (Martinless of course), and Peter started the chords to the Drapery Falls... And when everything came in, all you could hear was a mass buzzing of bass frequencies. You could see Mike playing his lead...But could not hear anything. Shortley after, in the clean section, Martin's bass head started going haywire, screetching, and distorting... Mean while, the bass drums were incredibly to loud, overpowering everything. This happend throughout the whole show... Not to mention they played only three songs, Drapery, Conjuration, and Demon, (Demon was a shortened version, maybe over 5 mins.)
There was no Opeth meet and greet either....
But as I said in an earlier post, just seeing them in person was worth the ticket price.

Wow.. They had a massive sound check when I was there. It took like 10 min, and the sound was perfect.
Oh and our Demon Of the Fall was definatly extended. Before they play that little riff after the first growled verse there was this really long note held then added with feedback... then there during the instrumental sections it felt like they added a few bars.

Black Rose Immortal would of been a badass way to end that concert. Still - Demon Of The Fall was outstanding live. I had goosebumps while slam-moshing!

I saw that show in Toronto. No Lynyrd Skynyrd, but Opeth played the intro of Billie Jean by MJ.

Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Opeth is the best band in the world(in my opinion).Every single friking song ive heard from them has been like getting an orgasm :thumb:
I currently have a band and we are trying to play their genre, but it's preety hard; especially doing the lyrics. But they have been the most loyal band i'd know(music wise).Hopefully they will keep on playing for more to come :D

Yeah but a lot of bands copy, some even play other bands songs, say they are their own, and become famous (Metallica). It's all about influences. If he likes Opeth's style - I encourage him to play it. We need more music like that - then hopefully rap will die. ;)

I agree in The Grand Conjuration being great. But those of you who don't like it won't be dissapointed
I've listened to it about 20 times now - I absolutely love it!
I didn't at first though, like most of Opeth's music, it took time to grow on me.
''my nights now filled with agony as your scent floats in the air

Rap will die down and another meaningless genre of music will take over. Synthesizers and Emo anyone?
Also For the album ghost reveries, The guitar work Is definitely new to them, Mikaels Singing Is also way better.

Oh yeah, DevilDriver is the real $hit... They are actual real metal, not this lame bull$hit that's supposed to be around now... Glad to see someone else around here who apprciates them... I've said it before, but Opeth and them are good friends! Mendez even used their bassist's cabinet when I saw them!

It's just......better :P I don't know how, but Mikael's just gotten better. His clean vocals just show so much variation, and are just all round more haunting/beautiful at times. And the growls are absolutely amazing.

I've been trying to get the new album off Soulseek for awhile now and have been in queue. I woke this morning with the entire new album downloaded.
I just woke up 30 minutes ago and so far this is one of my favorite Opeth albums for sure, it may even become my favorite. I love how it has more clean vocals and his singing is so much better. Something sounds different about the music in general, although I can't put my finger on it yet. I am only on "Beneath The Mire" so far.
I can't wait 'til the 30th.

Some of these posts reminded me of something. A few months ago I recalled reading that there were 9 tracks recorded in the studio... so I checked opeth.com and found this:
"The band is currently hard at work in Fascination street studios. 9 titles have been recorded and at this moment Hammond organs and Mellotrons are being put down to tape. The recording is being supervised and engineered by Jens Bogren and produced by the band. Some song titles have been confirmed and will be posted here soon."
There's only 8 tracks on the leak. Anyone think that we may be seeing some bonus/extra tracks on the official release? I want my dirty mittens on more!

My current favorite Opeth album is ''Ghost Reveries'', thanks to a friend of mine for getting it. I don't DL music. I buy it.
I can't stop listening to it. The album is so powerful, and brilliant - words can't explain it's beauty and fullness. ''Ghost Reveries'' will definately leave it's mark in the music industry, especially now they are funded through Roadrunner, more people will get a chance to listen to them.
The song ''Reverie/Harlequin Forest'' is mind numbing. I can't get that song out of my head - it's so powerful. The entrancing twin leads throughout the song are just a reminder how lethal and fierce Opeth's style is more and more evolving.

I just finished my first listen of "The Baying of the Hounds". I am very dissapointed in myself. The song is okay. I need to listen to it again. It's definitely a change in style. The vocal section that starts around 2:00 sounds NOTHING like Opeth has ever done....not sure how I like it. I definitely dig The Grand Conjuration and Ghost of Perdition, though. These three are gonna hafta hold me until Aug. 30 :)
Anyway, anyone tried to play Ghost of Perdition yet? It's either a whole step down or in drop d. Knowing Opeth, I'd say drop d. It really sounds like drop d anyway, based on the riffage. Anyone have any clue how to play any of it? I've figured out a few parts, but my recording isn't very good quality; the drums and bass are too loud!
Also, the real reason I posted this: why isn't anyone who has downloaded the album talking about the concept? I assumed that Mikael did go ahead with the concept album, even if it isn't black metal (like he hinted at on the DVD). Without giving too much away for those of us trying to save ourselves (some with more success than others!) for Aug. 30, what's your general take on the concept? Discuss :p
DesiOzymandias

Wait where did you get Baying of the Hounds? Can you post it via yousendit?
And I dont know too much about the concept and all, i heard it was going to be black metal, and the rougher parts of both grand conjuration/ghost of perdition are pretty black, remind me of Demon of the Fall kinda, which was an awesome song by the way..
I can'w ait until aug 30th, and even though most of this is VERY melodic, and nearly half the song isn't black metal, i still think it all sounds pretty badass ^_^;;

Stokholm Sweden.
''Opeth began their inexorable rise in Stockholm, way back in the late 80s when the then teenaged Mikael Akerfeldt was asked to contribute bass guitar to a fledgling incarnation of the band by its founder member, David Isberg. Isberg eventually abandoned the band altogether, leaving Akerfeldt both the band’s name and the task of picking up the creative pieces. This he did, eventually recruiting what is now acknowledged as the first, real line-up of the band: Akerfeldt himself on guitar and vocals, Stefan Guteklint on bass guitar, Anders Nordin on drums and Peter Lindgren on guitar.''

The other day I travelled to a nearby city to see the Sounds of the Underground Tour. I don't normally listen to a lot of metal, it was actually my first time seeing all the bands (and first time hearing quite a few) but I thought it was really cool. I'm pretty open to all kinds of music. I thought Opeth was probably the best band there, they really appealed to me (definitely more than Lamb of God did). It was my first time hearing them but I'd have to say I was very impressed. I also downloaded a couple songs from this thread and they were awesome. Cool band, I wish I'd hear them sooner.

I haven't heard anything by Lamb of God, but I doubt there's many people that could beat Mikael. When I first started listening to them, I couldn't believe that was his real voice. I was sure they screwed around with the recordings to get it sounding so flawless.

You shoulda seen lamb of god live at sounds of the underground... me and my friend started laughing. The guys like "AND THIS NEXT SONG IS CALLED DGABDHGAD!!!!" because he tried to scream the title and it just sounded like he was trying to force out a massive turd... very disturbing.

haha, yeah not many people do harsh vocals and still be understood. Mikael Akerfeld isn't bad for that, although it took me a while to be able to make out what he was saying. I think the best vocalists for that were Chuck Shuldiner and Angela Gossow.

I can get close to his growl, but not exactly. Sometimes I wonder how he withstands growling like that for 10-13 min. I do The Moor and I'm just about done.

I love Akerfeldt's vocals on damnation. They color a picture for me when I listen to that album.

Are there any leaks of new songs from the album besides a Grand Conjuration?
