Anyways, I love the DVD. I'm also a drummer, and Martin Lopez was freakin' SMOKING, esp. on the ****ation tracks (much more interesting playing to begin with...he's a great metal drummer, don't get me wrong, but he's a much better prog drummer.)

Check out the track The Drapery Falls. That has more clean vocals than death (correct me if I'm wrong) and that really helped me to get into them.
I'd say it's about even. You have your two clean verses, then the really heavy stuff. It's a great song though, and even if you're not a growling fan (as I'm not), you'll probably like it.

Has anyone here heard any Morningrise/Orchid songs live? if so do they sound alot different than the record because I was wondering what songs like Nectar or In The Mist She Was Standing might sound like live since they're not that great of quality on the first 2 albums.

Have not heard Morningrise/Orchid songs. I've only seen the Lamentations and subsequent tour stop in D.C. The 2nd show was mostly Deliverance, Blackwater with a song or two from MAYH and SL. But I did get a chance to catch Face of Melinda from SL which seems to be fairly rare.
I'm wondering if anyone knows any of the songs from the current set-list on the "sounds of the underground tour". Are they playing much new stuff? Just curious.

I was just wondering if this is the part Steven Wilson is doing in Bleak
Devious movements in your eyes
Moved me from relief
Breath comes out white clouds with your lies
And filters through me
You're close to the final word
You're staring right past me in dismay
A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away

pwned
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."
Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."
It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."
there ya go :)

Can anyone explain this?
Why should the material on previous ablums be excluded because of a label change? They are still Opeth's songs, Opeth can play them in concert, and the old label didn't write their music. It only makes sense that the music would be the choice of the band regardless of what label they are signed to.
So now if they do another DVD, sorry everything pre-Roadrunner!

Holy ****...Mikael's grunts are MONSTER in that song! (Ghost of Perdition). I'm not sure how I feel about the "Devil cracks the whip" part, though....as a whole, it rules. 6:00 is TOTALLY PT. 6:45...is ****ing nuts. Wow..the synths after that rule. I really like how they're combining what was done on Dam nation with what was done before...very cool stuff.

Depends on what you've heard. Blackwater Park is a must get, so far this cd is the best release to date. Songs as Bleak and The Drapery Falls show Mikaels voice has improves and is still with every album D*mnation is an awesome album as well, especially if your into slow, mellow songs. Still Life has an incredible mix of clean and grim vocals, as BWP does. The solos on White Cluster are so awesome. Deliverence is one of the newest albums, but its not as good as the rest. But, Deliverence and A Fair Jusdgement are the best ones are there. Orchid is Opeth's first cd. Not exactly the best but is still worth getting, because well it's Opeth. My Arms Your Hearse is another amazing album with songs such as Demon Of The Fall and When.
In short I think you should (in this order) get BWP, SL, MR, DE, MAYH, O and you can get D*mnation at whatever time. It just really depends how much you like slow songs.

What genre do most people consider Opeth?
Death Metal?Possibly Melodic Death.I don't know. It's hard because they will go from pure Death to acoustic to softer, more mellow and melodic riffs back to Death. But I would just say Death Metal or Melodic Death to easily classify them.

The rythmical approach is good, Opeth clearly saw that despite the shortfallings of the Deliverance album, the title track did kick booty and was a bit of a change for the band.

Woah, that official version of The Grand Conjuration is immense - has anyone managed to make/obtain a rip of it (or got one from the people on the Opeth boards) because it REALLY blows the radio rip out of the water. I completely agree about the guitar line under the syncopated bit, 'tis fantastic.
Still not sure which of the two (GOP and TGC) I prefer. I'm quite liking the Meshuggah kinda influence of TGC, but as mentioned before GOP has the acoustic part. Hmm...

I've got a question : In "Bleak" off of "Blackwater Park", about 3:25 into the song, is that Mike singing? The part happens again later in the song as well.
"Devious movements in your eyes
Moved me from relief
Breath comes out white clouds with your lies
And filters through me
You're close to the final word
You're staring right past me in dismay
A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away
Mist ripples round your thin white neck
And draws me a line
Cold fingers mark this dying wreck
This moment is mine"

Wow. I honestly didn't know that. Thats awesome.
I think its cool how on Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and ****ation, you can really see Steven's influence. The riffs, the vocals, and the keys. The Drapery Falls has one of my favorite Wilson influenced riffs. The lead part in the beginning of the song with the slide. Peter plays it while Mikael strums. It starts around 1:53.
Likewise, I could immediatly tell which song Mikael helped with on "Deadwing".

yes, he had some great creative basslines, and on top of that, he played fretless.

As I recall, didn't Mikael write most of his bass lines, though?

There was talk of this in the Opeth forums. Basically the last I saw, the thread had come to no conclusions.
I think we can figure this out by ourselves though.
Mike did write/play the bass in MAYH which was WAY different than MR. With the major differences between most Opeth albums overall music, nothing is ever dumbed down.
The bass in MR was awesome, but with MAYH, it seems much simpler. For the most part, the guitar parts were completely different and still great at the same time (unlike bass).
What I'm trying to get at is that you can see drastic changes in Opeth's style, but the substance of their music remains. The bass in MAYH, however, was not in comparison with MR's. If Mike was able to write MR's lines, then he could have done something awesome with MAYH's too.
...but he didn't because I doubt he is able to make bass sex like MR.

I didn't know that either!
You learn something new every day.

That song is incredible by the way, the acoustic section is awesome and Mike's vocals are like all screamy. I like it.

I just listened to ''The Grand Conjuration'' on Sirius.
eh, It was OK. Nothing Spectacular. I hope to God the rest of the Album doesn't derive from the mood in that Song.
/pray
Or maybe I just need to listen to it more - give it a chance to '"Grow'' on me.

I got that bored in school.
Wow, seems a lot happened since I was here.
I gave into temptation and I'm now dl'ing GoP.
Thoughts on it soon.
Ghost of Perdition owns.
The keyboards are great in the song, the riffs are wonderfull, and that growl is the best yet. Can't wait for the new album.
On another note, my Opeth discography is now complete after my trip to England, so I am very happy indeed.

So Ghost Reveries has leaked on torrent networks.....
I am no huge Opeth fan, but I do enjoy some of their stuff, so when I saw this I couldn't resist.
I've only listened to Ghost of Perdition so far, and I must say I really like the atmosphere of it. His voice and the guitar playing are both top notch, as usual.
Anyone else here have it? Opinions?

I love the atmosphere. I am listening to mellow clean guitars and softer parts yet it feels like I'm listening to tremelo picked riffs over repetitive blast beats!
It seriously feels like I am listening to black metal at times during this, but it sounds nothing like it. It's blowing my mind.

well, Mikeal's first thoughts were to make a BM like album, but he dropped that idea.
but maybe he did put some BM riffs in to the album after all.

Guys, I'm really having trouble with this... I've listend to the Grand Conjuration... And something about it seemed off... I'm not sure... So I'm wandering whether I should listen the Ghost of Perdition, or wait until the record comes out... Is the G.o.P that was posted good enough to listen to without wasting my first time hearing it?

There was a very poor quality version of the Grand Conjuration released, you might be hearing that. There has since been released a good quality version of both it and the Ghost of Perdition, which you can find if you scroll back a few pages on this thread. :)

Yeah, I've heard the good version of Conjuration... I guess I'm just saying some of the parts in the song sounded empty for Opeth... Would you reccomend I listen to the Ghost now, or wait for the record?

I agree with you completely. All the progressive records I've listened to took me a few listens to really enjoy them. For example, pain of salvation's songs...at first I thought they were ok, next time I started to like it a bit more, then I went and bought the cd and it was OVER...POS one of my new favorite bands.
