there are a lot of great metal bands out there. but there is only one god: OPETH
I think Mikeal said that there were 6 tracks on it and they were considering another 2.

I'm pretty sure there's 7 or 8. Altough I didn't pay attention enough to realize if some of them were uncertain.
I read an interview yesterday where he said there would be 5 heavy tracks, one instrumental, one intrumental which they ended up putting vocals on, and he talked about one of the more different songs they've ever done... but I'm not sure if it was included in a previously mentioned song.
I'll look for the link.

I don't see what's the problem some of you have with the title. I think It's OK. Besides, it doesn't reflect at all the content on the album. So could someone explain your problem with the ƒucking title?

I got Orchid a couple months ago and it was just brilliant, they are one of the greatest bands I've ever heard.
Orchid is still brilliant. After you get into that Record and want more, purchase Morningrise. (If you don't already own it)
I don't care what anyone says or thinks...Morningrise is a masterpiece and is by far my favorite album, not Opeth only...In general. And I listen to a LOT of bands.

I LOVE the vocals on this part.
I have kept it
The awakeneth symbol
Hidden inside the golden shrine
Until we rejoice in the meadow
Of the end
When we both walk the shadows
It will set ablaze and vanish
Can anyone actually write melodies like Opeth? Mainly Morningrisesque?
I have tried and tried but I absolutely cannot make any decent dual melodies. I've tried recording one melody, then playing something overtop. I've tried writting them in powertab. I've tried writting sheet music. No, no! I cannot do it at all!!

From watching him play on those two videos on guitar.com I really don't think he does.
He was talking about one of his favorite chords (an Adim7 I believe) and someone off screen asked what chord it was and Mike didn't know. He doesn't know the name of his favorite chord? Sounds to me like he doesn't know theory, but really I'm only basing it on those two videos.
Well, maybe you're right.

Opeth and Jens Bogren have now finished the recording and mixing of the latest opus "Ghost reveries". The album will be mastered today (June 16th) at the Cutting room facilities in Stockholm. Total running time will be around 65 minutes. Full tracklisting is:
Ghost of perdition
The baying of the hounds
Beneath the mire
Atonement
Reverie/Harlequin forest
Hours of wealth
The grand conjuration
Isolation years
A release date has yet to be confirmed, but it's planned for late August/early September worldwide through Roadrunner records.

Thinking about it, maybe it's Peter who does the harmonies.
You don't have to be a theory professor to know wether harmonies sound good or not. Harmonies are not that complicated, I do them myself all the time, and I barely know any of the chords i'm playing except for the normal boring ones(G, C, so on and so fourth).
People mistake the knowledge of theory and the knowledge of music entirely too much.

Yeah I love that part of the song...but he says ''Amaranth'' not Awakeneth.
There are several definitions of that word...but I think he meant this one.
Amaranth - An imaginary flower that never fades.
''The amaranth symbol'' meaning a black rose petal, or rose maybe?
Anyway the song is epic and will always have a place in my top favorite songs ever recorded. :thumb:

Other than that I think the song is ok. It hasn't really impressed me yet, but maybe the real cd quality version might impress me. One thing I liked was the intro the solo, where Mikael is tapping, but the rest of the solo, I don't know.

I thought the keyboards were a bit bland because all per did was follow the guitar line at certain points. I think there were a few parts where Per just added an atmosphere. I hope it's the recording quality that is hindering most the keys though because I think there's more to the keys than just following the guitars.

Hi
Does anyone know who (or who is likely) to be supporting Opeth in London on the 8th September. I have been unable to find this out, and am very curious to know.
Who do Opeth usually play with?
Thanks in advance
In 2003 at least - Madder Mortem were the support band on EU tour.

Ok, so at first listen I didn't really like the song all that much.
But after about 5 listens today it is really growing on me and I would rate it up there with my top 20 opeth songs.
It really reminds me of Meshuggah in a way that it sounds "mechanical"
Some parts in the song are extremely heavy and I can't wait to hear the actual version of it.

The new song is really cool. I like it alot.
The drum sound on the new song is really annoying. Maybe it's just the quality. Also, the keyboards following the guitar come off as being really cheesy. I like the vocals a lot, though. Good, creepy vibe to the song. I need better quality, though.
So far I really like it, aside from the intro which was kind of stupid. But other than that, good atmosphere, and some classic Opeth.

Yeah I really wish they didn't add a keyboardist for full time, no offence to Per at all.
I remember Mike saying that they would never need a keyboardist because the acoustic guitars would add all the "ambience" that they need...
I hope the keys don't replace the acoustics. :(

I feel guilty about downloading it.But I did.I was far too anxious and curious to not do so.I dont wanna play the song out 2 months before the release date.I'll listen to it for a bit more then I'll delete it.......if I have the will power.Hopefully.With that said......
The song absolutely owns. Not too impressive at first listen, but it certainly grew on me heavily as I listened to it more. It's very different, but still Opeth. It still sounds like the natural progression from D+D.It has the great drumming from Deliverance, with the dark mellotrons and keyboards of Damnation.I really like what Per adds to the song. The keyboards make this song sound freakin evil!Oh, and Mikael's growls are as sinister as ever.Closer to how they were on the Bloodbath record than they were on any of the Opeth records. The guitars sound thicker and heavier too.Another upside. The only downside really is that there is no acoustic passage.Other than that, its great.
9.5-10
I like the new song but I'll be surprised if the new album surpasses Blackwater Park.
Keyboards are definately cool, and I like the most of hte time except at the beginning where they just follow the guitars and make it sound psuedo-creepy and a little campy. Other than the intro, I think the song rocks.
I finally got to listen to it, but I was definitly disappointed.
The intro riff sounds like Meshuggah, and while that isn't a bad thing, it's not Opeth.
The keyboards seem overdone and overly dramatic, almost like symphonic Black Metal, which again, while it's not bad isn't Opeth.
The clean vocals are weird and don't work for me.
The drums are not Lopez quality, they aren't interesting at all and are just kind of there.
It's funny because I feel the exact opposite of the guy above me.

Go to the Opeth site. www.opeth.com. It shows the track listing and everything, says its about 65 minutes long, and the release should be sometime near August and September. Definatley picking this one up, although I was disapointed with the last two. Hopefully, they can match up or at least get close to the amazing brilliance of Blackwater Park.

This is a song I downloaded off of the Opeth forums a while ago. It's a band that one of the posters was in. The song is 20 minutes long and obviously the band has been influenced by Opeth. It's not good quality, but it's good enough.
I'm sad that this band is broken up.... it's a really good song :(
I'm pretty sure most of you will like it.
EDIT: The song is Soundsleep- The Withering Process
Someone please download this song :( It took me forever to upload on my wonderfully slow computer.
It has great parts in it. The quality is much better than the bonus mud at the end of Orchid and Morningrise, but not professional music quality either.

You were disappointed by D&D slappindabass?
Yeh I think it's fair to say I was. Because everyone has to admit, Blackwater Park just blew you away. It was unbelievable in ways words can't even describe. Then I listened to Deliverance expecting the same thing except heavier, and it was horrible. The growling was off, the riffs were empty, there wasn't enough melody. It sounded like a standard scream-your-***-off metal band, and I can't stand that stuff; it's really immature. So that album didn't make it for me at all, but there was only one song that I liked (Fair Judgement), and that song was amazing to say the least.
****ation has its hits, but overall its a weak album and its not the type of thing you can listen to anytime. "Hope Leaves" is an awesome track, awesome vocals. There are like 3 other songs on their that I liked, but the rest just didn't click for me, and they were too folky. Not enough classic soft-side Opeth.
So overall, yes I was pretty disappointed.
I know BWP is incredible in everyway, but I think Deliverance is great. I think that they growling is superior to BWP actually, with each album, he seems to hone it further.
Plus, you have to remember that no matter how heavy Opeth is, it's never just heavy for heavy sake. There is always a reason behind the aggression.
I have to agree with A Fair Judgement being my favorite track though.

Yeh it's just that what always appealed to me about Opeth was their adaptability, and great display of opposite extremes, and blending the gray areas so well. When they took that away and all that was left was a bunch of screaming (and yes I was saying the riffing on Deliverance was horrible compared to the riffing on BWP), it just didn't click for me. And what's worse is the only song that I liked (A Fair Judgement) was the one that didn't even fit in with the rest of the songs, the one that didn't belong.
I thought that A Fair Judgement fits perfectly :-/.
Also, I think that the dark/light thing was a lot more subtle and less noticable on Deliverance, so I see where you're coming from.

People that are criticizing Deliverance need to see the documentary about the making of it. I wouldn't be suprised if, given all the frustrations and subpar recording conditions involved, the band said "screw this, we aren't putting as many Ebow leads on this album. I'm sick of playing this ****."

****, I do that when having to play a part/song about 5 times when we're recording. So I know a small, small, fraction of what they felt like :p
I owe Deliverance's title track a lot, since it's what got me into Opeth, but when I bought the album I was let down and thought the band wasn't as great as I had thought. I kind of tossed it aside and forgot about it, but when I bought BWP, I was completely blown away and realized they are amazing. Recording conditions and frustrations aside, I just think Deliverance is kind of sub-par in comparison to what Opeth can actually do.

Opeth has been a very diverse band from the start. You can't even fully define them by just 3 albums. They should be open to do whatever they want.No one should ever say "oh, they use keyboards now, thats not Opeth".With that said, this new song is different, this tells me the whole album is gonna be very different. It's gonna be very interesting to see how many people turn on them once they reach hightened popularity.
Det_Nosnip
06-27-2005, 11:50 PM
Hopefully. I really would hate if they got mired down in one particular sound. Sure, they have certain elements or ideas that help define what Opeth is - progressive approach, dynamics/contrast, etc, but we don't want them confusing that with some sort of musical "formula" or cookie-cutter template for songwriting!
Alot of people seem to want them to make another Morningrise or another Blackwater Park, but that is pointless. Those albums have been done and they are brilliant. I want something new.

I really think it would be a good idea if the band decided to try another album like Morningrise. They go in a different direction on each album and with them going back to a previous album's style would be unexpected and completely different. Most bands can stick to a pretty specific genre and keep creating new and intresting songs. I don't see why Opeth couldn't do that.
A dual harmony album would not be the same as Morningrise the second time around. Just a similar style.
Nobody would want Opeth to change their sound for their fans. While I may want to hear a Morningrise II, I do not expect it to ever come unless the band decides that's where they want to go.

And oddly, all the original members (well the ones from Morningrise and Orchid, not people like Niklas and Kim who were in for like 3 months, but Johan, Mikael, Peter, and Anders) HATE that song, they all say it's their least favorite Opeth song. Personally, I think The Night And The Silent Water is a masterpiece.

As good as it is, I still don't think those two verses match the beauty of:
Do not turn your face towards me
Confronting me with my loneliness
You are in a forest unknown
The secret orchard
And your voice is vast and achromatic
But still so precious
Lullaby of the crescent moon took you
Mesmerized, its kaleidoscopic face
Granted you a hollow stare
Another soul within the divine herd
I have kept it

You know you can order Still Life AND MAYH off amazon.. cheap too.. that's where I got mine.
Same here, SL was $4.50 and MAYH was about $3.25...great deal, they were used, but they looked and sounded perfect.
I don't have an account on Amazon, but I should probably sign up.
I've found another place to order Still Life, so now it's just MAYH.
I like Opeth's guitar parts and the clean singing is good, but the growling kind of gets on my nerves. However I got used to In Flames vocals so that's not such a big deal. The main thing that puts me off them is the way their songs drag on. They don't really have that much variety in their sound from what I've heard of them, and their songs seem to stretch on forever when they could be 6 or 7 minutes-and instead they're 12 or 13. Do they have any songs of a more moderate length?

Hey guys. I just picked up Blackwater Park yesterday, and so far, it's amazing. I'm listening to Dirge for November. The intro is so beautiful. I'm sure you guys have heard it all before, but every member is so talented. I have a few questions though.
Does Mikael do the solos or Peter Lindgren, or do they sort of split the duty?
and also, how are the covers coming along?
Jude- Sweet user title. I love that song.

The split the solos, but Mike does most.

I STILL don't have MAYH or Still Life.
I ordered Still Life about 3 months ago, but they can't get it in stock, and then I ordered MAYH at centurymedia.com, and they were out of stock :-/.
Not cool.
I bought my copy of Still Life at an indie record store in town. :p *shakes*

If you don't have D*mnation, get it. It's soft guitar parts and clean singing the whole way. The songs are also around 5 minutes. Some more, some less.
I would also download To Bid you farewell. It has several different acoustic guitar parts and then some very nice metal riffs. Also, there's only clean singing again. 10+ minutes
A Fair Judgement is another song I recommend. The begining does start off pretty slow, but around 4 minutes on, it is one of my favorite songs. It has two solos, the second of which.... undescribebly awesome. Again, thew whole song is clean vocals. 10+ minutes
Those two songs were my first Opeth songs I heard. I'd give em a chance if you haven't

I'm a huge Opeth fan, but I only have Blackwater Park and Morningrise. Both awesome albums.
Well I thibk you have the best ones. But you should try to get Deliverance. I find the album very soothing.

Glad to see you're a fan Jake! Mikael does a majority of the solos.. but everyonce in awhile Peter has his moments to shine with solos.
Honestly I love the solos better on the Live DVD than on the actual record.. A Fair Judgement sounds beautiful when Mikael begins the second solo!
I love the live version of A Fair Judgement, that was worth the price of the DVD alone.

****ing ****. I wanted to cry last time everyone was talking about the DVD because I have nothing to play it on.
But I have officially converted a person into Opethdom. I will just get them to buy the DVD, which they will or else I will get visibly upset at them. I have let him borrow 6 of my 7 Opeths to be burnt so I'm guessing he'll do me a favor.
We'll laugh, we'll cry, we may even dance.
Sounds like a plan to me.

On a four string tuned down or what?
On a four string tuned down or what?
Well I did it in a 4 string bass but in the album they used a 6 string bass i think the tuning i used was: D,G,C,F........it was ****ing hard seriously....the only part that i messed up is at 6:02 because two basses play that part at once.
I've been meaning to learn that, but I hate tuning my bass down.
It's a great bass line though.

I didn't like Harvest on the DVD too much.... Pear just didn't have a good voice for the harmony if you ask me.. the solo was great though! It's one of my fav. Opeth solos.. just very relaxing.

You mean the overlying story of Deliverence and ****ation (2 part album).
I know that the songs have a story to them, something to do with life and death, but I can't put my finger on it, it's really deep.

Wait, there was a two part album???
Yeah, I think it's a sstory of a person who watches her family leave him/her and the person slowly dies and goes through the stages of death.

Deliverence and ****ation are a tow part concept album, I believe Deliverence is about after death and ****ation is about life into death.
I am now listening to them back to back, so I'll get back to ya on it soon, but I'm just going by what I've gathered from random listens and reading random info.

There is no concept/story behind the D albums... although alot of the Deliverance and ****ation songs were to be said that they were written while Mikael was dealing with his grandparents deaths. Sure you can make them stories as well.. Opeth are sometimes vague enough for this.

I'm going on things I read, so don't say OMG he said this as a fact, these are just things that I read, but it would make sense for Morningrise.

I agree...only songs I have really gotten down on bass are Windowpane, Hope Leaves and To Rid the Disease...then agian, I suck :)
I've learned most of the songs off Blackwater Park, The Moor, Demon Of The Fall, Advent and a few off Orchid.
To Bucket: A Fair Judgement on Lamentations is awesome because is is slightly slower, everything is pulled off perfectly and it's just insanely good.

I started learning Dirge for November today on guitar. It's going better than I expected, but still slower than I'd like. The acoustic intro is amazing, but I'm having trouble with it. I have less than one year of playing expirience, so I'm still surprised that I can play it as well as I can. :p
I actually think that Dirge is the weakest track on the album. It's still great, but I think the other tracks are much better.
