View Full Version : Opeth
I need to learn the bass to that song, but that shouldn't be hard.
We need a good clean vocalist though.

I'm an ok singer (was in choir and musicals for high school), but my voice isn't super deep. I could probably have good intonation on the singing though.
If we are doing A Fair Judgement, you don't need to be deep.
We just need to decide on a song first.

not bad carboard! not bad at all! but yeah, sounds like your holding back a little, and you mixed a whole lot of effects in too! thats awesome:)
And yes, you do Opeth growls some justice
The only effects are a pinch of reverb on everything, and an echo on that sweep legato thing at the beginning. So the only effect on vocals was some minimal reverb so they were in the same 'sonic realm' or whatever as the guitarseses. If I get bored I'll record somethin else.
A Fair Judgement? Nah, gotta do something more Opeth than that one. Serenity Painted Death anyone?
I'm up for whatever. It just depends on if the singer and guitarist(s) can do it.

I was actually thinking either April Ethereal or Godhead's lament
Who's actually doing this? Can we make a list of everyone involved?
I'm playing bass, whether the whole thing or not.
And could you vote for the 3 songs you want to do.
1. The Drapery Falls
2. Demon Of The Fall
3. A Fair Judgement (why not)

I could, but it's not originally played on an acoustic, and those barre chords are extremely hard to sound properly on an acoustic :/

I vote for a fair judgement, or otherwise the leper affinity, because I want to play in the cover song too, and I play keyboard.
+ I want to add my voice to a growl part
Thinking about it, I change Demon to Leper Affinity. We need to blow everyone away.

the drapery falls is easy, first opeth song i learned...in fact i know all of Blackwater park, cept for 2 songs(Bleak and The Leper Affinity) and Deliverence(A Fair Judgement is the hardest song to play on the album)
i could record the intro to the drapery falls if u want...

What would you say his lowest note is? I think from my sing-a-longs in my car I can go quite a ways lower.
I can hit a low E anyday and lower on a good day... I don't think he does anything that low though.

He hits some low stuff on Morningrise, but ever since he's gotten good at singing he's hung out in the upper range. True enough.

I think we should form groups of several people doing each song. Separate groups for each song. We'll have one group do "The Drapery Falls" and other groups do, "Leper Affinity," or "Demon Of The Fall," whatever else you guys wanna agree to choose on.
Knifeboy: The very intro part of Drapery Falls starts off on Acoustic, then blends in with the electric.
As for the new title of the cd, It's fine with me, as long as Opeth makes great music!

So, I was driving back home after graduating last night....it was about...oh....3 in the morning, and I had been in the car since 7:30 AM the previous day. The night before leaving, I got about 3-4 hours of sleep.
So, I guess you could say I was pretty sleep deprived...which may have had some of an influence on my experience. Basically: I was naturally "high."
Anyways, so I put on Still Life and in comes this GIANT ****ing storm...I mean, seriously, probably one of the biggest storms I've ever seen. Anyone in the Texas/Oklahoma region may have heard about it...this thing was crazy! Anyways, so it's just POURING rain, the sky looks like freaking armageddon, and there's lightning striking all over the place...hitting the ground, spreading out across the sky, etc.
Now, a normal (sane?) person would have gotten freaked out and probably done the right thing by pulling the **** off the road and waiting it out. Instead, me being the Opeth nut that I am, focused on how ****ing COOL it all was and how well it went with the music. I swear it was like the song was controlling the storm or something....lightning would flash in accentuations and everything. Nothing was more fitting than when Mikael screamed:
In the pouring rain nothing is the same!!
At that point, everything in the universe made sense, and I obtained inner peace. :D
That's pretty cool, what with you not dying and stuff.

Alright, for those who want to do the drapery falls, let's discuss who will play what.
Instruments needed:
Lead Guitar
Rhythm Guitar
Bass
Drums
Clean Vocals
Growl Vocals
Acoustic
Ehh, Drapery Falls? Why don't we do the Moor, or a rifftastic Blackwater Park song like Leper Affinity or the title track itself? I really don't think that song is powerful enough to beat out the stuff other official threads are going to do. Come on, man, the Moor would slay them. You have to admit it. And I could do most of the guitars if difficulty is a problem.
I'm game for a guitar spot, vocals, or both.

no worries, you're more than welcome to do blackwater park or the moor for the competition. Just get something organized and go for it!
To do that, I would need a drummer willing to lay his tracks down first. I don't ever post in the Drum forum, anybody here know of a skilled guy that could do it?
If we're going to record an Opeth song in pieces like this, I wouldn't want it to be a hackneyed, out-of-time affair. There's a lot to live up to in Opeth and that especially goes for the ability to keep time. I would say recording drums and maybe bass to a click track would be good for starters.

Hey, yeah im always here in the Opeth thread looking at the posts awaiting the new album but never really post these days. No time. So....
Ok so ive seen you guys talking about recording on the computer and i got REALLY interested. You see the way i always did it was to plug my mic in and hang it in front of the amp. Then record. But this only works well for acoustic pieces which i have recorded a few pieces of ( some inspired by OPETH themselves!)!
But, ive stopped recently cause what i really wanna do is to plug my guitar in DIRECTLY into the soundcard and record like that. I bought one of those adapters you get for your lead to make it fit the soundcard but I still dont know what to do!? I have a Soundblaster Live
I have a Epiphone Black Beauty, a Boss ME-50 and lots of leads and adapters.
Now, can someone PLEASE help me get my **** together. Id really like to start getting some of my own compositions on my computer. I currently use Sony SoundForge, but i dont know if this is the best option?

Yep. Its for a competition here. All the official threads are doing it, so we joined in (peer pressure ++). If you can play anything, let us know.

Garageband + POD XT = all the recording capability you could possibly need. It's what I use and it sounds ****in' great.
EDIT: For Grey Incision
The fingerpicking is my forte, I love doing that. I also have appropriate capabilities on my recording program for the ambient, reverbed leads and for some of the rhythm, but I can't handle all of the many parts in the song. If I could do clean vox and you do growls, that would rock.
The first scream is a nasty challenge though. And you'd have to record two tracks. :)

Mikael himself insists that demon of the fall is the heaviest track opeth has ever recorded, and possibly some of their newer stuff he mentioned.
And to whoever said do the drapery falls, yes it is popular amongst fans. But it isn't necessarily a great track to showcase the band is it? it isn't very complex with it's guitar work, or drums and bass. There is no doubting that it is good, but it isn't a track to cover i don't think.

I would love to but:
1) I can't find any good bass tabs

4) I'll screw up when recording. Over and over again.

It blows me away every time I listen... but I guess its just me. It just shows everything that Opeth is good at, amazing clean/growled vocals, great lyrics, amazing acoustic sections and great heavy electric riffs and its longer then 10 min and it has an incredible song structure.
If we do more than one song, maybe The Moor should be in it, but if we just choose one, I don't think that should be it. Just me though, we need to see what everyone else thinks.
After all, no one cares what the bass player and singer think...

Yay! The new Opeth album is awesome. (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=37739)
Anyone who can't record, just download Audacity, buy a 1/4 to 1/8 inch adapter and plug the output of your amp into the computer and record. Give it a try.
If nothing else, I would like to do acoustic and/or leads for our songs. I'm not as much a fan of Opeth's rhythm stuff and I'm also not technically capable enough in my right hand to handle it, I think. I'm also good at hearing all the different parts Opeth put into the music and breaking them down.
(I could handle any song from Morningrise with no difficulty, and I also see no difficulty with MAYH songs. After that it gets tricky, rhythm-wise.)
I think you have the lead job.

When you're screaming, growling, shouting, or whatever you need to do it full throttle or else it won't sound good. Do it when no one's home and you can growl as loud as you'd like.
Also, concentrate on doing it from the deepest part of your gut. What you did sounded like it came solely from your throat.
Not bad, but would sound great with practice and improvement.

Dude, that's not a real photo. The record label makes zero difference. The record label has to cow the band for a band to follow through: Opeth are too smart for that, and they did well enough on their own that it's silly that there would be any concern that Opeth wouldn't give two cents to their own credibility.

A little weak, I'm afraid to say. If I had a mic, I would give a sample but I don't think I have one around.
I think the problem is that your hoding back a touch and your voice doesn't sound deep enough. Sorry kid.
There's a difference between roars and growls. Akerfeldt roars. Go for roaring. There especially shouldn't be any trace of what your voice actually sounds like.
If Akerfeldt roars, who growls?
Tear those vocal cords up! This is your moment of glory!
NP: Black Rose Immortal
If Akerfeldt roars, who growls?
....I don't know. Some other people grunt. I think "roaring vocals" might sound stupid, so maybe that's why we refer to them as "growls." :)
A growl is more like what that fat secondary vocalist does on Nightwish's "Oceanborn" album. Like a stupid, low...growl. I don't know. *shrugs*

Opeth's song ''requiem'' is 1:11 and is by far my favorite instrumental song they've recorded.
Isolation Years might mean something you are unaware of...
It may also be an intrumental...
who knows...I like the name and can't wait to hear it :)
Cover due date is moved to August 1st. We should add another song.
I should have my bass tracks for Drapery and The Moor up this week though.

How about blackwater park? It's an amazing song.
Plus, It will give thew whole thing...uh...variety.
If we have a growler good enough, why not? But, I don't think we do.
It would be cool to do a track from Morningrise.

I got Orchid a couple months ago and it was just brilliant, they are one of the greatest bands I've ever heard.

Well, Blackwater Park is a German band from the 70's, and Still Life is a Iron Maiden song. Its not like Mikael was original when choosing those titles.I like Ghost Reveries.Good title.

Hell no we don't have one ready.
I'll be putting up my bass tracks for Drapery today hopefully, if I can get some advice about not making it sound like crap. That's all I've got so far, crap.

I had some money to blow, so I traded Blackwater Park into FYE for Store Credit, then bought the bonus edition, the dude at the desk just kinda looked at me weird, but it was worth it, Still Day Beneath the sun and Patterns In The Ivy Pt. II make the album like 200x better.
I downloaded those two tracks. I think they are OK, nothing great.
Nice trade in though.

I dunno man, Still Day Beneath the sun is possibly the best Opeth song I've heard.

I'm trying to get a someone to buy my BWP for $10 so I can buy the one with those two bonus tracks, but there are no takers :upset:
Stupid Phish heads
I love both of the extra tracks.

now I think that's your only possibility.
Opeth released a 2 cd bonus version of BWP, but that's long out of press.
so unless you can find it second hand, you have to d/l

That explains why Sam Goody only has the BWP with no bonuses.
There's always amazon anyways.
Do you want me to upload? Of course you do! Watch for them.
Couple of things:
1. I can now record decent quality stuff so that's good.
2. I sound like crap today and will leave the uploading till tomorrow.
3. There is a whole lot of silence and it's about a second off due to me hitting play on iTunes and then record on audacity.
4. What do we do about the fade-out?

I love how the kids at the mall near my house don't buy good cds, seriously, I can find any Opeth, In Flames, Korn, Death, Quo Vadis CD at the FYE there, cause nobody buys them, when City Of Evil was released last weak, it took them like 5 days to sell the 10 they had on display in the front, lol.
My favorite is when kids who think they are so hardc0re come in and head straight for Korn albums.

I once was palying BWP ( the cd), and some nu-metal kids came up to me, and said they thought Korn was more heavy and harsher
I laughed, and continued listening to Opeth :D
Well duh. Of course Korn is harder, they are played on MTV. Music Television. They know far more than you do.

Uhhh guys.... you do realize that Korn is a different type of heavy? and that comparing them to Opeth is like comparing Ham to Frosted Flakes?
Musically - Korn = Heavier
Vocally - Opeth = Heavier
i am the robots

Actually, I was wrong, Korn is equally as heavy, their music is more based on primal aggression, wheras Opeth is based on complexity and harshness.

Just wondering.... how is Korn not heavy? I agree, they have soft songs, but when I say Korn is heavy, I'm referring to their pre-Issues work.

If you ask me, I think that Untouchables is there heaviest. There pre-issues stuff didn't really have anything really heavy about it, just a bit of a crunch in the guitars I guess... IMO ofcourse.
I won't argue with you though, you obviously know a lot more about nu-metal then me.

... Untouchables is way heavier man. I have it. I use to be a fan. Its not as raw as there older stuff, but it has more a metallic crunch.

Since when does it matter? Heavy doesn't necessarily mean "good."
i am the robots
06-13-2005, 11:41 PM
It does not necessarily mean good, I agree, but to say something like this (http://s50.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2UAY484GHB2173OJWFTX2WM0XK) isn't heavy is just plain old retarded.
Anyhow, back to Opeth, does anybody have a clue as to when the new album is coming out?

moop (the one who got a photo with the Martins the other day) said Lopez told him that it would probably be 6 months.
