I like Oasis, but I don't think I've heard this song.
Oasis - Acquiesce - 4:24
Starts off with some faint background strumming and someone singing a note; swiftly interrupted by a much louder, distorted riff. A nice start for the song, though it just as soon goes back to what it started on. This happens a few times, before a downwards spiralling guitar from the right speaker signals the entry of the whole band, and the development of that distorted riff into a proper verse riff. Vocals come in, sounding like typical Oasis, with the line "I don't know what it is that makes me feel alive". Not sure why I've noted that, I just quite liked it.
The riff is a good one. Pretty simple, but catchy, and supports the song well, basically. Bit of extra percussion around 1:10, just before what I assume will be the chorus. The Other Brother (Noel? I can never remember which is which) comes in to sing on the chorus, which is a bit of a surprise, as I'm rather used to just one of the two singing throughout a song. It's probably a good thing that he's come in for the chorus though, since he has the better technical voice and it's a sung line. Rather predictable rhyming of "each other" and "one another", but since I'm enjoying the song, it just seems to add to its charm, rather than being annoying.
Chorus ends, and we're straight back into the rougher vocals of the verse. I think I prefer the verse to the chorus; seems to be a repeating pattern with Oasis, as there verses have great flow. Another chorus, shortly after. Nice swell of music before it starts.
Lots of repetitions of bits of the chorus now, and it sounds like the song is winding down. And it is; it all kind of slowly comes apart and stops.
8/10. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I think the end was a bit disappointing. With a full minute left to go I was expecting something more.

Thirst - State Of High Piss Off (4:41)
Never heard of this band before, so I have no idea what to expect. Based on your description, I'm expecting to hear a Pearl Jam song.
Song begins with an echoed shout, and then some clean guitar chords. The description seems rather misleading, the chord sequence has quite a bright feel to it. Hmm, now there's the a well-distorted electric guitar beginning to make its way in, before what I assume is the main riff begins. It's an quickly-picked riff played high. The piece so far reminds me of the Exies a bit, with the fusion of classic rock and technology.
The riff stops and resumes again with heavy drums and powerchords behind it. As it fades away, the bass becomes very apparent. It has a spacey-feel to it, reminiscent of the breakdown before the solo in AFI's Dancing Through Sunday, I like it alot.
The verse is bass and drum driven, with various guitar melodies played as accompaniment, while the singer's voice is quite relaxed. He, again, reminds me of the Exies' singer. The lyrics mean little to me, they seem pretty random. The drumming throughout the verses is impressive, the drummer takes his opportunities for fills well. The chorus is a big one, it explodes in after the verse, with big guitars to contrast the quiet verse. Nirvana101, is it?
There's a very catchy solo after the second chorus, which reminds me of the solo in the Goo Goo Dolls' Bullet Proof, which is a very positive point. Repeat of the chorus now and fade-out with feedback. It's a decent enough song, repeated listens show it's a good song from a musician's point of view, but it didn't give me much reason for repeat listens.

Rufus Wainwright-14th street.
Well it starts with some clean chords on guitar and piano and then the guys voice kicks in. Rufus' voice aint the greatest I have heard but still sounds good.
The chorus I love a lot very great with the girls voice adding alot to it imo. With a nice line "why did you have to brake my heart" (I think). I like his voice alot more on the chorus
The brass bit is nice aswell in the 2nd verse.
The chorus hits in again and it gets extended and even better each time I listen to this song it gets alot better and now when I listen to it the track quiets down and now back up again with jus tthe gilrs voice which is very nice in my humble opinion.
Now the song ends with a few notes on the banjo which I thought was clever all in all a

Neurosis - Raze the Stray
Begining with an operatic female voice, and synth, and some (being a little bit) of piano. I dont like it so far. The voice doesnt match the piano and synth very well.
At about 1:01, guitars, bass and drums come in, with a guy screaming in the background. Plays the same not so great riff a few times, then stops. Slow struming on a clean electric, with bells and a violin with it. Then drums come in, and the synth does the cheesy major-minor key switch on the drum hits. Actual vocals come in now, and i like the vocals, but the rest of the song isnt doing it for me.
At somewhere near 3:30, it starts into solid music, as in actual guitar riffs, and drums that stay solid. I like this section, its got something to it that the rest of the song doesnt have. very smooth too. But, sadly enough, this only lasts about 30 seconds. Then comes back again at 5:05 or so. From there, it sounds as if it will end the song like this, but we still have a good 2 minuets to go. Which scares me, cuz i dont want to suffer through the rest of this.
The smoother part ends again, now its a slower guitar riff, drums, and an obnoxious sound coming from the "left" guitar. kinda sounds like if you pluck a piano string. Its almost like the song cannot decide what it wants to do
At 700, a total new part of the song starts. Its a little bit more like the smoother part, just this time its got an eire "groove" if you will. The bass is much more predominant. Guitars are doing a 7 chord up up down down down down down kinda progression, its overused a lil but the bass makes it really cool. That section ends at 8:15 or so, and the song ends at 842.

Demon Hunter - I Have Seen Where It Grows
I've heard about these guys, but never actually gave them a listen.
The intro is pretty cool... kind of sounds like it skips at one part, which adds a pretty cool effect. In comes the rest of the band (except the vocalist) and the same riff is played. Sounds pretty good, but nothing to write home about. In come the vocals and the song slows down a little. The vocals are understandable, which is a plus. After the verse comes the chorus. The introduction to the chorus is neat. The cleaner vocals in the chorus sound pretty good, a nice switch from the screaming. Next comes that intro riff again, and then the verse. At this point I'm thinking the song structure is pretty simple (intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus). This isn't a good thing, but it doesn't bring the song down a lot. The part a little after 2:00 is pretty cool, with the drums and guitar only. Then the vocals come in, talking. Then a little breakdown comes, and the song suddenly fades out.
7/10 - Not a bad song, but nothing too great. I'm glad they didn't make it much longer though, because the song structure was quite simple.

Asterius - On Black Tusk
The name was more interesting and I generally dislike wanky prog metal which is what Andromeda sounded like to me. Maybe not though.
Begins with a riff with long rests and an annoying synth sound. Whispers. Atmospheric yet very heavy. THen the song breaks loose. I like it. The riffs get a little boring and the techno sounding noises are annoyin because this is good metal in itself. THe singer's voice is decent but I prefer either a straight growl or straight singing, layered or not. THis is that annoying gring or sgowl half way in between. THe rifs are chuggy and get a little old, but it is all very tight.
I like the transitions between almost black metal riffing and the stop start chord chugs. It is a cool contrast. I also really like the background singing. It fits well and is where it belongs, in the background. It is sung and pretty well done. The drummer has a few cool fills sprinkled around. I love the outro. That annoying synth ends the song.
Decent but nothing that really amazed me. Self proclaiming your own band as a new genre is lame. Really, really lame.
7/10
My recommendations are all symphonic and/or folk metal, mostly stemming from death metal. A cool turn from the traditional black metal influences on symphonic and/or folk metal. Most are around 5-6 minutes long.

Dark Lunacy - My Dying Pathway - 6:01
Starts off in the middle of a riff, it feels like. Maybe it runs on straight from the last song. Anyway, it wastes little time on an intro of any kind, instead going more or less straight into the song. The vocalist is alright; nothing great, nothing awful, and the same could be said of the drumming, I think. The riff is pretty good, nicely melodic; nothing too technical, complex or adventurous, but pretty good. I'm kind of hoping that with a six minute running time it'll develop into something quite epic. Nice little change-up around thirty seconds in. It didn't change to anything remarkably different, but the little jump itself was pretty cool.
Vocals cut out around 1:00, and some slow, mournful sounding strings come in. Mostly higher strings, and I think the guitar mirrors what they're playing in the background, which is strange because the song more or less keeps going underneath. Anyway, the strings go away when the vocals come back in, and it carries on as before, until about 1:50, when a really nice melodic riff/lead appears in the background. A vocal fill leads this higher (epic-sounding) guitar back into the strings. And we have a slow, chunky part while the strings play over the top. The use of the strings is nice, but it seems to be getting a little overdone, as they're in it so much but aren't doing much in the way of variety.
Eep, spoke too soon. After a little instrumental break, which I thought was going to launch into another part of the song, the strings come back and do indeed play something different; a playful, higher-pitched melody, while the rest of the band maintains a more solid (and unremarkable) base to them. The vocals continue at seemingly irregular intervals, but they don't really intrude on the song, despite their harshness. The strings again begin to grate though, after a fairly long period of the same thing (nice though it is). Just before I get too bored, they switch it up again, with the strings playing some unsettling (in a good way) melody, and the drummer finally earning his keep. I've spent most of the song thinking that the drummer seemed their weakest member. He never seemed to be doing much, but now for a short while he's doing rather a lot and doing it rather well.
The whole song's slowing down now, and I think it's just going to fade out. Yep, it does.
8/10, I think. The use of strings occasionally got a bit tedious, but they never let it get tedious enough to just ruin the song. The drummer rescued himself from too much criticism towards the end, too.

Aereogramme - Post-Tour, Pre-Judgement
I seem to recall hearing this name of a band before, but don't remember anything else.
Begins with a drum beat with a bit of cymbal and bass drum. Then a guitar comes in playing relaxed quiet chords. Nice, nothing special. The singer enters and has a nice voice.
Hahahahaha.... triumphant keys arpegiate upwards and then guitars come in with the triumphant synth chords underneath. I don't think it was supposed to be funny. It plays a few times then drops out leaving the same 'verse' section. It's still nice but feels a little too long. There are some quiet synth pulses before the triumphant section returns.
The singer's voice becomes annoying in the triumphant section. A second loud section follows triumph 2 and it is much better. less funny more cool. THe synths are gone is why. The into a bridge or seomthign. This seems to be the first time the bass has had a real part. It's a cool little section that sounds like the song is winding down. Strange because there are almost 2 minutes left. This section feels like it's going on a little too long but then we hear some cool modulation by the guitar and the vocals re-enter. I feel triumph 3 coming back before the end.
Oh! no something new and much better. The singer is screaming and it sounds alright. The guitar is becoming boring and then the song ends. That god for no more triumph.
6/10 triumph killed it.

Soli i Sombra - The Safest Place (6:14)
I've no idea who this is, so I'll just jump right in.
Piece begins with some sharp piano chord stabs and some soft drumming. Some clean tremelo picked Spanish guitar eases in(it's an electric Spanish, I think.) This is very nice, they've got a different sound. Drumming is very good, if a little synthetic, I like how the rhythm builds. The piano playing is annoyingly sparse, I find myself wishing it to become more involved.
Around 0:45, a second guitar joins in, an acoustic played in an eastern style. Long, slow detuned chord strums are scattered throughout - is it a 12-string. This guitar slips into straightforward strumming when the singer - female - enters. The drums perk up when she begins to sing, and the piano playing becomes a little jumpier. She has a great voice, very controlled, but not showy. American Idol this is not, she knows how to use her voice to good effect.
The vocal melodies are lovely, often doubled. The "November kisses" part is great. A breakdown around 3:20 brings back the Spanish feel, mainly through the lead guitar. This part leads into a guitar solo, though it is not a typical guitar solo, merely a repetition of a melody through the chord changes.
The singer returns and another verse is sung. There's more urgency in her voice now, and it is in this vein that the piece finishes in a flurry. Good finish - 7/10. I'm noticing a trend in your art-rock recommendations, they're technically superb but not showy. Good song.

Ok, bids on 14th Street!
Rufus Wainwright - 14th Street (4:44)
Starts off with just the singer for about a second before an accoustic guitar and a piano come in, the song slowly builds up, and the drums come in very sneaky, it's kinda cool, a second vocalist (Female?) comes in, I've listenned to the song a few times, and it is catchy :p
At about 1:30 a saxophone(?) comes in, I like this.
At about the 2:50 mark every instrument starts slowing down, the vocalist soon stops and some guitar and piano play for a little bit with some nice bass backing them, the backing vocalists come back in, this time without the male singer, and just continue their own little chorus for a little while, until the male singer comes in too, and the song just fades out with the singer's repeating their line "Why'd you have to break all my heart, couldn't you have saved a little bit of it", wow I didn't expect the end, a little banjo jig finishes the song off, I like the jig! :p
It was a fairly good song, the vocalist didn't interest me that much, he just repeats the same line alot, with little variation, which could be seen as a little tedious, but the backing instruments I liked in parts, I'd say about 6/10.

The Cat Empire - The Chariot
Never heard of this band before.
Begins with some noises and then a horn. Trumpet I think enters. There are other instruments there but really low in the mix. The electronic sounds are cool.
Woah! I didn't see this coming. A really ethnic vibe enters and the singer seems to have a latin accent. I like it. Reminds me of Manu Chao. Not what I expect from Australia. I like the combo of hammond organ and trumpet. It's a cool little song. The transitions are pretty bad. They don't flow, more like stop then start again. There is a bass solo of sorts but it sounds strange because of how bassy the mix is. More like a rumble.
Well, it's getting boring now. Not a whole lot has changed. There have been other sections but it keeps coming back to this long verse thing. I wish I could remember the name of this style of music. I want to say salsa but that doesn't seem right.

Gorguts - Das Martyrium Des
Wow, that started awefully quick. One BIG riff from guitar bass and drums starts the song off. The drums sound great, he is very creative. Lots of syncopation (sp). The guitars sound kind of opeth-like. Its good. The vocals come in, i dont like them one bit. Too raspy at first.
I quickyl get used to them though. Now they are awesome. Guitars are doing high end melodics. This song is really technical.
At a little over two minuets, the guitar riff changes slightly. Then it jumps into a big, face melting guitar solo. Which begins in a rage of speed, slowing through the entirty of the solo. After the solo, the melodic-ness comes back for a bit, almost like a breakdown, but it is realyl cool. The song is great, but it definatly need more variety. As in noticable chrous's and verses, it all sounded the same.
Overall, i give it a 8.5/20. I say, definatly check it out.

I wouldn't call DJ Shadow techno. Trip-hop is a much better classification for his music.
Back from Hell - Narnia: 7:31
Long song. Opens with a short section of strange static and an explosion, and straight into the first riff, which is very cool, nice crunchy over drive on it. Got some good tempo to it. Reminds me a bit of Queensr˙che, which is no bad thing.
After some strange vocal effect I think and some half time cymbal usage, the track goes into the first verse/singy section. It's fair, the vocals I do like though.
More riffage at the 1:30 mark and this carries on will 2:10, with pretty standard switches between riffs, each pretty decent. The second verse is more of the same, and the following section is again more of the same. It seems to be very standard metal, unless I'm missing something deeper to this song.
Here we go; 3:30 is where we hit a switch. It's been a wait, but the drum fill into the solo piece is really nice. I think it starts with a keyboard solo, and then harmonized keyboard/guitar stuff then some shreddy guitar bits; it's really nice stuff though. My favorite bit so far. I bet you can tell I'm a drummer. :upset:
There is a head bangy section after this to switch back to a verse, which feels like a really big step back for the song. After what the solo section achieved, to go back and do all what has been done before again so quickly is a bit annoying. There is a repetition of all that has gone before except we now get stop gap bits which come back into the slow riff.
A siren has begun to release its slow wail. The music begins to fade out underneath it. Some very airy and ethereal sounds are coming up now, all calm, save for the lingering siren. It finally disappears and the vocalist starts talking of his turmoil, and how he plans to resolve it. Concept album?
I enjoyed that last section a lot, and the riffs were pretty decent whilst they remained fresh within the song. With that I must say it seemed very dragged out and maybe overstuffed. Overall not bad though, a 7.5/10.

65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard Like I understood
Never heard of this band before but I like post-rock so I hope I like this.
Begins with piano and an electronic sound in beat. Sounds cool. Then some slightly chuggy, but quiet guitars enter with hi-hat. I like it. Brooding. There are lots of extra little noises. Guitars and drums come in fully. Very nice, especially with the piano. I like the mix of electronic sounds and.... natural sounds (not natural but not computer generated).
This song is good. I really like the sections and the weight that the melodiues carry. There is an almost stop and go feeling to the music. I really like it. The way the drums are programmed is very cool. The super electric biuts mixed in with authentic sounding drums. The strings are also a nice touch.
This is good. This doesn't sound like a Godspeed side project either (of which there seem to be an infinite number). I'll look into this further. It reminds me of almost Pelican but less heavy. The same emotive riffs are there though. I really like the way the mix shifts and gives different instuments priority.
9/10 I diggit.

Heard a few songs by these guys now.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Cockroach - 2:11
Starts off with the sound of insects buzzing, which instantly reminds me of Sunna - Power Struggle, though I don't imagine the rest of the song will actually unfold like that at all. I rather want to listen to Power Struggle now though, and I don't think I have it on this computer.
An incredibly bright sounding flash of guitar about ten seconds in, and a vocalist sings - totally clear, loud, and free of effects, which seems unusual - about a cockroach. Ah, about him killing a cockroach. "I release you from your cares.. *psssht*". Nice.
Another voice has joined him, I think. Sounds female, though it may be just a very high male voice. Harmonica (I think) plays little bits in the background now. I'm enjoying the song, though I'm not anticipating being able to write much about it if it carries on like this. The focus is very much on the lyrics. He's singing the bit I've seen you type out before now, about being practically divine compared to the cockroach. Small, pathetic sounding coughs in the background. I assume that's the cockroach.
And it ends like that.
7/10, I think. I get the feeling if I'd listened to it in a different mood to whatever mood it is that I'm in now, I would have liked it a lot more, since it's one of those kind of songs. But it was not to be.

William Shatner (w/Joe Jackson and various others) - Common People
Never heard anything by Shatner because I've been purposely avoiding him. I assume it will be bad.
I refuse to rewrite the entire thing but here's a summary.
This song is awesome. The spoken word stuff only got cool as it progressively became more rythmic and even continued into places you wouldn't expect it to continue.
The song itself was alright but not the kind of stuff I usually look for. Then it became almost like a showtune. I could see this as part of a musical on broadway. The chorus and theme helped this especially.
I was opverall very impressed and shocked even that this pimp of a starship captain was able to produce such a marvelously good song.
I will go looking for the rest of this.

Dysrhythmia - And Just Go (6:16)
Song begins with some clean. ambient guitar, plenty of delay. Bass and drums enter around 0:30. Bass plays a repetitive riff, high in the mix, while the drums slowly build up, increasing in volume as the guitar moves back to the front of the mix. So far, so good.
The guitar riff is similar to the beginning, it has a funky style which is compliment by the similarly funky bass. The drums become louder again as the piece progresses, tho this seems clumsy to me, while the bass slips to the back though is still clearly audible. Plus points for not mixing the bass out, but I'm not liking the mix as regards the drums.
The guitar becomes more distorted as the piece moves on, the sporadic chords ring out, as do the harmonics played. I still think the drums are too high, though the guitar isn't particularly interesting. The drumming is good, though, the best aspect of the song.
Around 3:14, the guitar begins to play a distorted, single-string riff, before embarking on a high chord pattern. This is alot better, as is the arpeggio section which follows. There's some very nice muted patterns, before the heavier riff returns. It has a metallic flavour to it, but the piece itself is quite light. Metal-lite if you will.
Bass becomes dominant again, and there's some slower, moodier picking. The drums take a backseat again, which results in a better sounding mix. Piece fades out on this theme.
The first three minutes were, to my ears, dull as can be.
The second half was alot better, from the metal riff onwards I was very pleased with.
On the whole, I'll give it a 4/10, for the second half alone, I'd give it 7/10.

Butch Walker - Mixtape
I don't think I've heard anything by Butch Walker before.
Begins with a piano quickly followed by an acoustic guitar. The voice comes in. This belongs on pop radio. It probably is on pop radio soemwhere. I like ti. Catchy and a bit moody with lovey lyrics and that ballady feel. My biggest complaint - The one beat of the chorus doesn't get enough accent.
I like the song, especially the layering of instruments. Nothing is particularly interesting but it's all nice. Nicely produced but I'd like a more rhtymic bass or bassier drums or soemthing. This style of music sits well with me. Easy to digest and easy to forget.
The ending section was a nice touch. The steel drum was cool. I liked the ending section best actually. Fade outs are lame.

Peccatum - Stillness
I've wanted to hear Peccatum for a while now. Then I forgot about it until seeing the chance now.
A guitar playing some... cold mechanical theme starts, some gratey industrial noises join.
A variety of voices, male and female, start the singing, one of which sounds like Jon from Korn. It's very mechanical and grating, but slow and somehow calm.
The chorus (I guess) loses the basically the whole harsh edge that first part has. Some nice female vocals are singing here, some arabic sounding harmonies. The drums are doing a trip-hop beat, it's pretty interesting. A piano starts, and it feels to be building to something big.
Yep, here come the dense walls of harsh industrial noise. There's a horn section that goes along with it, I'm surprised I can hear it. The walls come and go, interspersed by noises. Flies.
It goes back to the original guitar line, verse and chorus, just slightly different percussion. Then a bridge, a slow chugging single bass note, and a male and female vocalist doubling the lyrics.
It goes back to the walls of noise/horns, then ends with the sound of flies as before.
Woeo.. that was very cold, one of the more creepy songs I've heard in quite a while. I liked the guitar work, it was quite minimalist but it did so much, also it was there almost the whole time, yet it didn't get in the way, or be annoying.
It would go well on a Quake-type game. I liked it for the most part, a bit noisy at times, but that was purely intentional. I thought it was going to be more aggressive, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I will get more. 8.9/10

Down to Size - Hoax
Never heard of or by.
Begins with some hi-hat and bass. Then explodes. Kinda funky. This sounds like nu-metal to me. Chuggy guitar chords and simple sounding drums. Not too bad. The vocals are kind of rap/yelled. Then we get a melodic section. I like this much better. Still nu-metal. The lyrics are very nu-metal as well.
It's a decently done song, just not my style. I like the section where both vocal styles are going.
The drums have some interesting, though not exactly impressive, fills here and there.
Not a lot to say. A cool mix of the spectrums of nu-metal. Get's the funky rap version in there and the really melodic type. I probably won't look for any more.

Behold... The Arctopus - Estrogen-Pathogen Exchange Program
Another band I've heard whispers about and wanted to hear.
Ah, you knows I like ambience, the opening is this. Dark synth strings playing single notes... it sounds a bit cheesy and wrong. After about a year, guitar comes in it's really low and the music is really dull, misty, but this mist is made of glue and vomit. It's really thick and not nice at all.
About half way through is the first drum/cymbal hit and a smash of notes. Then it just goes spastic. Very technical instrumentation, slap bass and guitar, but it sounds rather random. I don't like random sounding music. These guys can sure play their instruments... I just wish they would do it in a way that I'd want to hear, like Atheist does.
At 4:15 they finally get something together, it sounds constructed. It's not random anymore, and that's a good thing. With only a minute left, not much can save this for me.. Everything but the drums have stopped. The drums go on a solo rampage with lots of toms and bass, it's cool. Then they slow down while keeping the pattern going (!) until the thing ends.
Well, at least I heard it. Disgusting music, I really didn't like the first bit, second bit, third bit, and fourth bit, but the last minute was alright. Far too random for my tastes.
2/10.

Fagan - Beautiful Mundane
Never heard of or by. I am near a virgin to trip-hop as well.
Begins with some ambience and then a beat comes in. The ambience is pulsing. I like the tone of this so far, the atmosphere is nice. Then the drum beat really comes in with a singer. I like his voice. It's soothing. It's all very soothing. A female voice replaces his in a little bit. Not a lot is going on, but that's the way it should be. It feels like movie sountrack music.
He come back singing and it's more rhythmic but also more sung.... it's cool. The bvass is becoming increasingly noticeable. Then we get a section with more stuff going on. A really fuzzy guitar or something and the drum beat picks up. I like it. Still soothign but faster. There are also faux-strings. I like them. There is a swell and some mechanical sounds then it all clears up (it was all slightly distorted) and comes back in. I like this. The strings are a ncie touch. The voices come back in, but distantly now. I like it. All very well done. Move music, or at least fodder for an excellent music video.
The ending is nicely sparse.
9/10 I liked it. I'll look further into trip-hop.

I'm still new to the wonderful world of innovation that we find in Avant Garde, but I'm sure such a name denotes a wonderful band sound.
----------------------------------
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Phthisis 3 minutes, 44 seconds.
The song starts out well enough. Low noises of soothing ambience begin to be punctured by industrial drum beats. No sign of guitar yet, but some synth work. At around 30secs in, the drum beat changes, we hear a bit of a chord from the guitar(s), and we hear the first vocals. Female, whining vocals. They are actually very uncomfortable. The basic beat is very repetitive, and the vocals are making me want to stop the song. The music changes a few times, and I am finding it very interesting, enough to keep my listening. The song changes mood at around 2:35, which is when I start to actually like it a lot. A male voice comes in, and blends well with the feminine vocals. The music is very industrial, and the song comes together rather well. It's sort of like this is what I have been listening to the song for, and they finally got their act together. From this point on the song is great.
Impressions: I'm not sure if the song is intentionally uncomfortable before the point when I started to like it, but I wouldn't put anything past avant garde. As such, I can respect the song artistically, but not really musically.
Score: 5/10 - This score is high mostly for the last part of the song, which I quite enjoyed.
My picks
Australian Crawl - Oh No Not You Again (New Wave Rock)
St Vitus - Born Too Late (Doom Metal)
Demilich - And The Slimy Creatures Reproduce In Your Brain (Ambient Death Metal, I guess)
Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi (With The Two Pronged Crown) (Classic Metal)

Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi
I've heard some (as everyone has) and don't like it. Try try again.
Begins with a classic riff and simple drums. This does not bode well. There is some nice harmonizing going on between the two guitars. Then we get a chuggy palm muted chord. The singer comes in, meh.
There are some little fills in the guitar and they are unimpressive and kind of boring sounding. I feel like I can't call any of this cliche though because this is what made it cliche. The singer sounds too relaxed. No energy.
A solo. It's a fairly stock classic rock/metal sounding solo. THen is speeds up and tosses in some pinch harmonics. Kinda cool but boring. I wish they would do something exciting like a time change or this works. This really thick sounding harmonized section at around 3:00 with whip sounds in the background. THe ending riff is also pretty cool.
The classics are not my thing. 4/10

Dysrhythmia - Circulatory System Overhaul
The song begins with one of the cooler, old school ish riffs i haev ever heard. It super catchy, with awesome bass work. The guitars distortion is very cool. The drums are just in the back, doin their own thing like drummers do. The song gains some strength for a while, the bassist is doing some real good stuff, including chords and arpeggios (probobly). The riff changes, but the bass contiues doing what its doing. The guitar now is playing a lot of single notes, likes its doing a slow motion solo.
at 2:05 or so, the bass and guitar come back together. Playing the same notes, in a very cool chord progression. Then, the bass and drums switch it up a lil, stoping after the first hit of each note. Then they continue. The guitar again breaks off, and does another solo.
at 3 minuets, the song changes again completly. the drums are playing a more catchy, complex rythm, with ride and a tight snare sonund. The bass is doing the same thing, the guitar is just going off on its own thing, which fits very well. The next portion of the song sounds much the same, only with a little more jazz influence.
at 3:55, it switches for a few seconds to a very jazzy section, then to a harder metal section, and back. When it comes back to the metal section again, it stays like that and fades. Now we are in another section in which, for the bass, there is a little more jazz influence. The drums are very catchy again. The guitar is playing the same riff from the beginning, as are drums and bass. This is very catchy portion of the song again. Something i would totally blast in the car while sitting in traffic. The guitars are doing some harmonics work, as are the bass i believe. its an earie feel when they do it together. And thus concludes the song.
Great piece, overall a 8/10

Alien Ant Farm - Summer
Heard the singles.
begins with a chord progression quickly joined by some very nice basswork and drums. I dig this. The singer enters and his voice passes the test. It keeps going and sounds good. We get the chorus and it is great although the bass part isno't nearly as good here. The melodies are great. I really like this stuff. The singer is doing an excellent job and has a very unique voice. It's nearly nu-metal but not quite and funky and just good. I really like this.
my biggest complaint is the smaeness of the song. The bass however, saves this. There are basically 2 main bass fills that are both excellent.
I wish there was more to sya but there despite being a good song, there;s not a lot going on that really took me except for the bass. The singer was good and I'm sure the drummer and guitarist are both fine.

Ephel Duath - The Other's Touch (Amaranth) (6:42)
Begins with a crash of heavy guitars, before devolving into a 3-piece jazz setup. There's steady, metally drums, some clean jazzy guitar and jumpy bass. The guitar has a latin feel to it, I like it. Distorted guitar enters and the band defaults to a heavy metal type sound, driven by the lead guitar.
Singer enters for the verse around 1:00. Again, he sounds like he's influenced by latin music, he may be trained. Distorted guitar arpeggios of arying speeds during the verse, while drums and bass taken a backseat. Chorus now, which reminds me of Refused, there seems to be a hardcore influence anyway. Singer begins to screech and the music becomes heavier and faster. That was great.
After the second chorus there's an extended break led by the bass, quite jazzy, before the guitar again takes the lead with distorted arpeggios. As in the beginning, lead guitar enters and eases the singer's entrance. Piece continues as before, the band recycling various themes before returning to the screaming chorus. Cool.
All the instruments have their place, it's well recorded, but I find the general sound to be lacking. The slower parts drag, having little to hold my attention for too long. The outro section does improve however, with the horn taking a lead to take the piece out on a mellow note.
Decent tune, but a it overlong for me. 7/10.

Never hear of or by
bwgins with the standard punk durm intro and then a guitar plays a chord prog with the hi-hat. Hmmm... ooohh I like this. The bass enters and does a cool little fill. Maybe this is another good bassist I should know about. The chord progression loudens up and the drums come all the way in. The singer enters. He's nothing special but not bad. There isn't nuch going on that's interesting. The bass isn't playing any more cool stuff and this guitar riff just keeps going. Kinda dull. The chorus is alright but not different enough and nothing cool is going on.
THe lyrics are inappropriate. I guess that fits the title. There is a littl bridge at about 3 minutes that is a slight change and then we get something much different. A different drum beat and lots of effects on the bass with the guitar playing little arpeggios. I oike it. Then the punk starts fading back in while the singer does a Bono trick and hum sings over top with a ton of reverb. Then it stops and the sogn restarts. There is a little guitar solo of 2 notes and the singer is kind of talking over top.

maudlin Of The Well - The Curve That To An Angle Turn'd
Some clean, non-trebly guitar full of reverb and echoes is at the start of it. Seems like a typical mOTW sound in quite a few of their songs that I've heard. The bass and some keyboard join in this ghostly moodsetting intro. Some lead guitar snakes around.
After about 1:20 it threatens.. and delivers. It goes into a slow sludgy passage, with deep Opeth-like growls. Rarely interrupted by quick guitar squeals, harmonics and notes that have an audible frequency. This goes on for 2 minutes, with little change.
A quick break with a trumpet or whatever that is, and soft guitar strums. Plays a bit of Green Day - When I Come Around for 0.5 seconds, then goes back to heavy for 10 seconds.
Calm again, a woman is singing, sounds emotional.. I wouldn't have expected it here. It's very calm in fact, the drums patter on in the background, barely noticeable. This carries on for more minutes than the heavy bit did.
The ending is a bit faster, and a bit unfocused and rushed it seems to me, some of the drum bits just sound stupid. I guess everything until now has fitted in its own strange way.
After all that, I listened the song and hardly had an opinion at all. Very cold to my heart. I know in time it will grow on me, all their other songs did. For my first listens, it's so hard to say what I feel because their songs are so weird. It took the poor ending to make me realize that everything before that sounded relatively good. I felt too much like an observer.. Bah ask me in 3 months time. 7.5/10 for now

Decoder Ring - Collapse Coming On
I have not a single clue about this, so here we go:
The song starts with some strange computer type noises which fade in. Then something like a triangle is hit, and a rhythm is maintained on that. Various other atonal noises fade in, and out, before a pretty little piano melody, synth accompaniment and clean guitar take centre stage. This all builds up for a while before being joined by a steady bass drum beat, and various other instruments - which sound like glokenspiels or something akin to that, which add to the pretty paino melody.
At 2:20 a full drum beat develops and drives the song forward. This is extremely well written. The melody started off so simple, but has gotten so complex now and still manages to sound wonderful. The drums drop out for a while whilst something like the begginning melody is repeated, but variances are added by new instruments.
This really is a very pretty song.
The drums kick back into something approaching the earlier section, but this time with added slightly distorted guitar on top.
The layering is this song is brilliant, there is so much happening but it all works together to make a great song.
The song ends with your usual guitar chord ringing out + feedback.
So yeah, this song was cool. Extremely well writte in that there was so much happening at one time yet it all worked together to give the sense of simplness. Also very pretty. I liked the fact that it was instrumental as well, it was just one of those songs that I think would've been spoiled by having specific meaning tied to it.

Spiritual Beggars - Salt In Your Wound
I have never heard these guys before so I went into this not knowing what to expect.
The song goes straight into it and it has a very interesting riff with the bass following the guitar. The drums are great on this track in my opinion. It goes into the verse playing what it was playing before but with vocals. Due to weird mixing it is quite hard to hear the singer but the vocals are great. It then goes into a new, basic riff for the chorus and the singers voice becomes more clear. The song then breaksdown and then goes back into the chorus riff. The breakdown in this song is fantastic but I have always had a thing for breakdowns :p. After continuing the cycle a bit more there is one crazy solo, I <3 this solo. It then breaksdown again and then that is the song.
The vocals on this track are great and the guitar has some fantastic riffs all the way through. I also thought the drums were great and the song had a fantastic layout. My only complaint really is the fact that the bass just seems to follow the guitar all the way through but that might just be my crappy speakers. A great band that I will certainley look out for :)

King Crimson - Elephant Talk
I'm slightly familiar with King Crimson, so I have a vauge idea of what to expect.
The song starts off with a trill on what sound like a some kind of synth, but is most likely Robert Fripp's guitar. Phase and delay effects come in to make this a crazy trill.
A jazzy tune then starts up on the guitar, which is accompanied by bass.
The vocals enter with an aggressive "shh" and are immediatly followed by the drums which give a steady beat and mold the song together. This repeats a few times before the vocals stop hiding backstage and make a proper entrance.
The vocals seem to be very free verse, and stray away from the usual rhyme schemes and rhythms that most lyrics anchor themselves to. The subject matter also appears to be very wierd. The jazzy bass and guitar continue underneath this with overdubs from another guitar, which is actually recognisable as a guitar this time. The whole song so far gives of a very physcadelic jazz feel.
A change occurs at about 1:30 and a new part is introduced. It puts me in mind of some of Buckethead's playing, though several million Bpm slower. It appears to be this song's explanation for a chorus. This repeats a few time before going back to the, already well established, earlier jazzy section with the crazy vocals.
The only real difference this time round is strange overdubs which replace the vocals.
Another jazzy section enters, lead my clean guitar. Fripp's solo over the top sounds very much like a violinist is in the process of being strangled. Intersting? Most certainly. Pleasing to the ear? Not entirely.
A brief reconnaissance mission back to the first section before we head off to an entirely new section. It appears to be a breakdown section accompanied by a more conventional solo by Mr. Fripp. After this brief interlude we repeat one of the earlier sections. And encounter a very brief ending.
This song didn't really go anywhere, it was just extremely repetitive and no where near as progressive as I was expecting. The writing for this song just doesn't approach the level of that on In The Court Of The Crimson King.
It was an interesting piece, but not very easy to listen to. And Not one I'll be listening again to in a hurry again.

I've never really liked any black metal that I've heard so far, just giving it another try.
Enthroned - Seven Plauges, Seven Wraths (Xes Revelation)
A surprising intro. A timpani, clarinet and some maybe ethnic instruments play some calm stuff. This doesn't last long. Distorted guitar and fast double kick drums, AND I CAN HEAR BOTH CLEARLY!!!! :O Doesn't sound too bad actually, and it sounds more like death metal to me. A simple riff is playing, then the singer comes in. Sounds a bit raspy like the Atheist singer, but midgetized, and I can't understand what he's s.... singing. There's a deeper growl every now and then alongside midgetguts.
I guess its the chorus here. It's quite melodic, both musically and the vocals, but the midget is still grinding away as well. The drums slow down for a bit, some simple guitar chords chug along, then speed up as a guitar solo starts... then they really fast mid-solo, but it seems the drummer can't get it quite right.
Yeeh, quiet middle section, some middle eastern scale is used, sounds like Alchemist. The song title is half said/half growled. Then the same riffs are taken to the heavy level. Some cool riffs follow, still fairly melodic.
More progressions, could be the first verse/chorus repeating. The chorus music follows on and theres a not-too-difficult sounding guitar solo. It goes almost as melodic as Gothenburgh Death Metal at the end. Then fades out.
Yeah, not bad at all. It was easy to listen to with all the melodies, so it would be a good stepping stone to more extreme music. It stays interesting over the 7 minutes with all the changes. It was also good to be able to hear the instruments clearly. I'll keep this one.

Starts of with some weird sounds.
At 0:10 drumming and guitars come in, I like it.
Not typical nu-metal :p
Everything is well audible.
 at 0:50 vocals come in, way too whiney for my tastes, it ruins the song a bit.
The guitaring underneath is cool though, reminds me a bit of Tool at times.
The music has a very electronic feel to it, a lot of synth effects.
The mainriff is a powerfull one, the bass going on under that is very nice, but once more, the vocals aren’t my thing.
Especially on the softer parts of the song the vocals get annoying.
At 3:30 there is some acoustic strumming and some strings going on, after this we get a solo of sort, which is cool, the vocals now remind me of Cedric from the Mars Volta, I like it better.
At: 4:30 the song is synth driven and bass driven, after that going back for one time the main-riff.
The song ends with the weird sounds it started with.
Overall:
Vocals aren’t my cup of thee, I might get used to it, they aren’t bad, just not my thing.
The rest is awesome, only the synths are a bit too much at times.
4/5

Mr. Bungle - Golem II
Right so is there a Golem I? To your shock and horror I am yet to here Mr. Bungle ( I hear you cry) so I have no idea what to expect. You took your time uploading this one :p.
This song starts with some interesting noises with some weird jack-in-a-box music, kinda creepy. The attitude changes and it is a kind of happy change but still quite creepy.Holy crap! So many thing happening at once. The drums in this are fantastic and I love the whole structure of it. It then breaksdown and has a perculiar voice. It then has some singing but still perculiar voices and then the effects go off the voice. It then breaksdown then but just the tune really slow and then goes back into it. It then comes back with some more perculiar vocals and the back to usual vocals. It then continues this kind of structure for the rest of the song until the end when it turns into some classical creepy piano (or so it sounds like). This is real one of those songs that you need to hear to believe. There is so much going on at once that there is no chance of me explaining it all. This was a very hard one to review and I did a poor job of it :upset:. You're either gonna hate or love this song. I loved it :) 9/10

Judas Priest - Touch of Evil
I have consistently not liked Judas Priest. Here goes another try. As a side-note, Touch of Evil the movie has the best opening shot ever. Nearly 5 minutes long and it ranges from a closeup to full building shots.
Begins with some wind and bells which strings join. Atmosphere! Then a guitar. This could be good. The drums join and they're the same old lame drums every song ever could have. A nasty keyboard joins, really terrible sound to it. The singer comes in, he sounds better than I remember. This is getting boring. The singer is really good.
Then we get another section. The synths sound good here. Very epic sound to everything. I like this the way I like power metal. I don't actually enjoy it but it gives you the feeling of being a knight in shining armor battling a dragon. Anyway... back to the first riff. I wish the guitarist would play something more exciting. everythign but the singer has gotten old by now.
The little solo thing is good. the winds and bells in the background have a nice effect. Then the solo gets into itself and I want shredding but there is none to be found. It is a very awesome solo though. Like, really, really good. It does interesting things musically. Then there is shredding. I wish there was a little more of that, like the solos Winds does, a nice mix of musicality and shredding. Anyway, I like the song, it is good but at the same time, not really my thing. I can see how the live show must be amazing though. The drummer just did a little bit of double bass but for the most part, he is really boring.
8/10
All my songs are over 7 minutes because I wanted a post-metal/rock theme to mine. Sorry about the size. If you have a bad internet connection, just post in here that you need something shorter and I will comply, but don't just be lazy and ask for a shorter song because you can't commint all 8 minutes to listening.

Pelican - Australasia
Starts of very Isis like, dense low guitaring.
This riffs carries on till: 1:20, there is some change now, and it sounds better.
The song starts to flow better now, with some more alive sounding drums.
At 1:55 there is some intesting guitar played over the mainriff.
At 2:20 the music slows down a bit, very drone like
At 3:50 there is some relaxing strumming on acoustic guitar, I like the sliding sounds on the strings.
After this there isn’t much going on, the typical dense post rock sound that I know from Isis.
At 6:40 the soundscape sounds very empty, some strumming without distortion or anything.
This is very nice, you can feel the emotion going on.
Towards the 9 minutes things get denser again, very melodic though.
The playing at the 10 minute mark is very cool.
But you can feel it building towards and end..
Well, I’m not really impressed by my first Pelican experience, but it was good.
Sometimes the dense riffs started to bore me, and the more melodic stuff in between was very welcome,
I would be more interested if they had vocals though :(

Solefald - The Death of Father
I have all the Solefald album on my computer and own In Harmonia Universali but I don't listen to Pills Against the Ageless Ills very often so I figure this is OK.
Begins with those distinct Solefald vocals and a cool chord progression. Shaping up to be another ace Solefald song. Then way the riff is broken in half by those staccato notes is really cool. Then the same riff plays but with harsh vocals and heavier drums. A cool way to use the same melody twice. Then we get into the palm muted chords and vocals. Solefald is one of the only bands to really use palm muted chords well because there is always something else going on and they use discretion. Somebands just do palm muted power chords through half of every song they right and it sounds like crap, but Solefald has it down.
This song gets to the halfway point then changes it's sound with organs and a very methodical sounding rhythm. I like it. It contrasts nicely with the first half. Eww... there is a drum stick click to get back into the first theme. That is ugly and annoying and should have been left out. This is a fairly boring Solefald song. I've always thought this album was generally more boring than In Harmonia Universali but this is just not cool. The song never really does anything spectacular at all. Oh well.

Between The Buried And Me
The song starts off immediately with the vocalist growling and the guitar playing a sweet technical riff. It catches me off guard. After this comes a kick-*** fast part. The vocals speed up as well. I'm diggin' this. Next is slower part, with the guitarists still shredding like whoa. The next little bit interchanges between fast parts and slow parts, with hardly any breaks for the vocalist. At about 2:00 they switch to this really smoooooth riff. I'm soooo diggin' this. The next part is my favourite part in the whole song. It slows down (a lot). Everything is clam. The bassist plays a simple bassline. The drummer comes in, with soft distorted guitar (awesome touch). The vocalist sings calmly "it's raining" over and over. In the background you can hear some rain and thunder. This is mezmerising. Two minutes later it's still raining, but I'm not complaining. Soon the lyrics deviate. The vocalist's voice is still calm. The guitar in the background is still setting an awesome atmosphere. The drummer is hitting the high hat more often now. The vocals are overlapping. The guitar takes the foreground now, and soon they break into a calm but faster part. The drummer is "double-bassing". The vocalist is calm. He cries out three more "it's raining", the third time going quite high on the "raining". Back to the intro again. It variates from the intro, eventually ending with nothing but rain.
9.5/10 - Amazing song. I loved the middle. A 10 would've been achieved if more there were a little more fast paced parts (similar to the prat after 0:30) at the end.

Cynicon: Momentary
Starts off slow, with some atmosphere, then everything stops, the drums roll, and it kicks in, after the guitar goes through some riffing the vocalist kicks in, sounds to me like a Power Metal vocalist growling, kinda cool, he does some high scream (Or maybe that's a back-up vocalist), the guitar's doing some sick riffing here, sounds similar to Meshuggah imo, but I don't know much about either band, I like it.
There's a cool echo sound to the vocalist, I guess it's a back-up singer, but to me it does sound like it could be some delayed layering, either way it is very cool. It comes in with the drums doing a repetative dum-dum-dum-dum, which I think is boring, but since he only does it for a short while, I can forgive him :p, the drummer stops for a little bit, but then starts again going off on his snare(?), it's a cool rhythm, and it slowly builds, then the singer breaks into it, and the guitar starts going strong again, all the time this atmospheric 'mist' is playing, I don't know what creates the sound, maybe a keyboard... Everything just kinda builds up and then stops...
It's pretty cool, I would have liked the guitar to keep going the whole way through, but we don't always get what we want...
Pretty sloppy review from me.. I'd say probably a 6/10...

Starts off with some accoustic strumming. The bass comes in. I'm dancing in my chair. In comes the vocals. Can't say I'm a big fan of the singer. A second guitar comes in with an accoustic lead. After that a bongo comes in. The song, minus the vocals, has a really cool vibe. There isn't much more to say about this song because it's fairly short and there isn't much variation.
5/10 - It just lacked something, and the vocals brought it down.

From First To Last - Note To Self
A melodic intro in 6/4, sounds a bit emo/punk... yes it is, the vocals more than confirm that. I don't go for this type of music, but that's beside the point. These vocals are harmonized, quite strained, some bits slightly screamed, a bit like power-metal vocals. The drums are going through bursts of double kick every now and then.
The music playing is decent, nothing too special, but the melodic structuring is done well. But these vocalists are the main focus, and their voices are quickly getting on my nerves.
A quieter middle section with lots of tom drums, the singers now sound more like Blink 182. "I miss you terribly... Come back to me"... Is this really the most common lyrical theme in this type of music?
It progresses a bit, I'm sure I havent heard these parts before, but they are incredibly melodic and sound pretty similar. There is one bit that just sounds chunky-heavy, playing on one chord, it's a good break, except the singers are being as melodic as ever..
Then it just changes to the outro - a reversed guitar bit, sounds decent, but it doesnt really feel like an ending.
Hm, it's just not to my taste, the ever-melodic sound reminds me of that time I ate a heap of these lollies, then I just felt so sick I coudln't eat anymore, even many months after that... yeah. The music was alright though, not something I could listen to for very long, the vocalists should have taken more breaks.
Ok, but this hasn't inspired me want to look for similar stuff. 6.5/10

Rumours Of The Big Wave - Burning Times
I had never even heard of these guys before doing this to be honest so I had no idea what to expect. The song starts out with some soothing yet mysterious synth. The synth changes to a noise similar sort of to a guitar and then the singing starts. Oh dear lord this singing annoys me, its got emotion it it but it he is trying to be back quiet and calme and it just annoys me. The synth stops at about 2 minutes and just a very slow drum and bass beat. The drums then speed up and the bass plays a different melody. Then everything stops at about 3:15 and all there is is the singer, an occasional bass note and some odd noises in the background here and there. The is then a strum of a guitar and the bass and drums come in again with some perculiar jungle like music in the background. The singer then comes back in at 5:20 and then it stops.
I really didn't like this song, everything in it was bland and the singing annoyed the hell out of me. The noises in the background on the synth were quite interesting at times. The bass wasn't that bad either and had some interesting riff changes, except for that it was a bland and boring song. 4/10

Dillinger Escape Plan - Highway Robbery
I've only listened to DEP's album "Calculating Infinity" so I picked this song to get an idea of their newer material. It was a pleasant surprise to immediately find out that they got a new vocalist since my biggest objection were the irritating and dull screamo vocals. Sure the new vocalist has a screamo-ish edge but his vocals are far more strong flexible and listenable and his passages from one style to another far more interesting and memorable.
After getting used to the new and imrpoved vocal style I focused onto the music. It is typical DEP, mixing a wide variety of genres on a harcore formula, often incorporating both meticulous yet forced sounding at times (like the quiet break in the middle which at least is not too mellow) technical parts (that can be heard in a typical technical metal band) and odd crisp rhythm-ed (start/stop riffage) that meets with their -core influences.
This song, compared to their earlier material, sounds way less technical to me and it seems that it has and intense alternative and commercial touch, meaning that its composers mostly wanted to make a catchy and solid song rather an incredibly technical and difficult to grasp one.
An interesting listen in overall, although nothing extremely mind blowing or totally fresh sounding compared to what I'm already familiar with.

Gory Blister - Art Bleeds 4/5
As much as i listen to death metal, I have never heard of Gory Blister. But, I looked into them so i could put a good description.
Gory Blister hail from Italy and were originally formed in 1991. They recorded a few demos and did a few shows here and there but they wanted more. But due to their roster troubles, this was going to be hard. They eventually released their first album, 'Cognitive Synergy' which quickly became a cult classic. After yet another lineup change, Gory Blister was back in the studio to record their newest release, 'Art Bleeds'. Which brings me to the song review of the title track off 'Art Bleeds.'
The song has sort of a progressive feel to it with palm-muted power chords and short bursts of double bass. You can tell this is talented band. This track really doesn't have a very heavy feel to it, which I don't mind. The screaming is fairly original sounding and doesn't growl like a lot of death metal vocalists do. In fact, I would probably call them Technical black metal. A great song though.

Hellhammer - Revelations Of Doom
I think I got a demo version, it was the only one available. the Id3 tag says it's from 1983
Theres a funny echoing "OW!!" at the start reminds me of strongbad/limozeen.
It sounds very raw and simple, not what I was expecting going by the recent Hellhammer projects. The drums are so simple, and shitty... its the same pattern almost the whole way through the song, and that pattern consists of 2 beats. 1 is the bass drum, 2 is the snare and a cymbal.
Imagine this :
12121212121212121212121212121212121212121212121212 12121212121212

The guitar is very simple too.. man this is pretty bad. I surely hope this is the demo version, it sounds like it. I don't really mind the raw sound, but I hope they changed the music and drum pattern for later versions.
The "vocalist" is speaking more than anything, but with force, a slight growl, and lots of echo. Very hard to hear what is being said, but with better production, I'm sure I would be able to figure the lyrics out. He is doing the best bit of this song.
It's 3 minutes of mostly the same thing.
If I can find another version, I will review it and replace the current review. This one is just plain bad.

Goldie Lookin' Chain - Monkey Love
I considered doing the nu-metal track, since I knew I'd have little to say about this track, but in the end I just couldn't help myself. This reminds me of a hidden track on Butch Walker's first album, which is a 5-minute parody of R. Kelly. Listening to this, it seems to be more Michael Jackson-related.
The song begins with a "sexy" funk guitar motif and a sleazy, breathy, soul voice starts to talk. Yes, it's an ad for a gay chatline. His name is Rene La Roux...
He starts to sing. His voice is overloaded with way to much of that electronic vocal effect that I hate. Sounds like Daft Punk, but camper. Tongue is heavily in cheek throughout the song, possibly as a preventative measure in case it should enter a monkey's taboo orifice. Eww..
Lyrics are typical R&B stuff. Guy's eyes meet monkey's across a crowded zoo, it's love at first sight. Soon they're enjoying feeding time together and a whole lot more. "I love the monkeeeeeeyy" Our hero and his love interest make love til 2, go for walks in the park, all the usual beastial relationship stuff.
The beat sounds like it comes from the drum machine on a crappy 80's keyboard, so that's probably where it comes from. Of course, it fits the song perfectly, so it's awesome. Finishes with a typical no-music, spoken word section - he misses his monkey. :(
Very enjoyable song. Not something I'd listen to unless I really had the urge, or it just came on my playlist, but a very funny parody. 7/10.

Jason Mraz - Geek In The Pink (3:55)
I chose this because this guy has the same first name as me. Jason Ist Krieg!
Well, this song starts out with your standard sampling sequence, with some "studio chat", i.e. "Yo, you ready man?" etc. Then we launch into a groovy drum'n'bass tune, with some inventive sampling and a vocal harmony thrown in for good measure. Almost immediately, the singing begins in earnest. I'm liking this guy's voice, it's fairly standard pop fare, but it's very sharp and clear.
The lyrics make this song good, and the timing of the vocals, combined with the afore mentioned beat make for a rather pleasant song. The structure doesn't really change, and the verses and choruses are actually suprisingly similar in sound.
Around 2:20, the song turns to a bridge, which is actually my favourite part of this song. Very poppy, but it's a nice change. Then we launch into the familar verse/chorus sound we've had for the rest of the song. Ending on a similar melody to the intro, with the addition of some repeated lines "Geek in the Pink, yo".
Overall, I give this a solid 6/10. It was a pleasant song, fairly standard pop fare, but still enjoyable. If it was slightly less repetitive, I'd have given it higher.

Riva, is Lux Occulta any good?
reviews on metal archives concerning there 2 laterst albums are 34% and 60%
so I'm wondering are they worth checking out?
and which album would you suggest?
Yeah, you'll get mixed reviews on Lux Occulta. Some do not like their music at all, like Pesttanz in the BM thread. Basically, the vocals are sometimes weak, but the music, to me, is brilliant. Their first two albums were Folk/Black metal, but they moved onto a very Avant Garde style on their latest two albums. The Mother And The Enemy, their latest effort, is fantastic, so go download that now. It features thrash, jazz and trip-hop inspired songs, all mixed into a very atmospheric feel.

Lux Occulta - Architecture
Strange bouncing midi sounds open it, but it goes heavy with a thin guitar pretty quickly. It's medium paced, steady beat, and it has got those grim, barked vocals that you find in Black Metal songs.
A minute in it goes spaz with some strange but cool lead guitar runs, sounds a bit like Ephel Duath just not as jazzy, different vocals and harder drums. I think there is a fiddle there as well?
Well what the fack... there is now a quiet fully jazzy break with a sax solo. It seems a bit random. I kind of expected that the heaviness would cut it off abruptly. It's interesting music, but it sounds too disconnected to be enjoyed much by me.
Some weird time signatures, which is a cool thing, except it doesn't seem to mix well with the black metal sound. After a while, the music regains a beat that is easy to follow. The ending is done well, the riffage gets powerful and leads to a forceful climax, done well there. Yeah, it ended there too.
Hmm, I can't say I liked it that much. Much like Ephel Duath for me: I like some bits, but the contrasting musical ideas and seemingly random flow is what let it down for me. I could listen in the future and try to let it grow on me... but if I was going to like the band, I'd go for some of their newer stuff instead, going by the small review.

Brace - Break From Fear
No idea who this is, though I assume they're Australian/New Zealand-ish (?)
Opens with strummed, mildly distorted guitar which creates a wall of sound effect, My Bloody Valentine-esque I feel. There's backwards guitar, I think, at various points. Repeated drums gradually become more pronounced, building to a crescendo right as the guitar switches to riffing and the vocals enter. I like this, sounds very loose but controlled.
Vocals are very australian, reminds me of the Flogging Molly singer, who's Irish but we're all from the same stock. The similarity is especially apparent at the end of the verse when he shouts, "not in my loife!" Verse melody is simple, very rhythmic like a rap. It's a 1-2-3and4 pattern throughout and transposes in keeping with the music.
The chorus is shouty, with the aid of strings. I can't make out what he's saying, but it sounds like he's unhappy. The lyrics I can make out suggest he's telling somebody to "break from fear", although my interpretation may be wrong. ;) I think the string section may have been a mistake. String sections need to be done well and I fear this one just adds unneeded polish.
Rating: 8/10, could have been more had the arrangement been better.

Heard of, not by.
Begins with an audio sample of a news program talking about Reagan. Then the song starts. It's pretty cool. It switches quickly into a slightly unusual riff. The singer I'm not really fond of. He uses the same old punk delivery. On the brightside the way the riffs are written is very cool.
It reminds me of how Greenday would be if they could write decent parts. I dislike the way the song doesn't progress but just revolve and recycle. I suppose it was a good song but it was easy to tune it out.
I liked it. It wasn't amazing or something I'm really going to go looking for, but I enjoyed it. I also really dislike politically based lyrics. The ammount that this band reminds me of Greenday is bizarre.

Botch - Framce (3:40)
This song is only 3:40, that's rare for one of your picks ;) Likewise, heard of but not by.
Begins with heavy, pounding rhythmic stabs (bass, drums and guitar) in time with what appears to be a screwdriver (carpentercore?) and a high, tremelo picked guitar line. Though I can't tell if it's an actual screwdriver or a guitar effect. Given that there are two guitars already playing, I'd guess it's the former. This is my kind of heaviness, it sounds wonderful, and works well with the industrial feel.
Vocals come in, very distorted. They're a bit exaggerated, I can sense some machoness in there, but they're fun. The intro rhythm continues throughout the verse, but the guitar begins to play a fast, smooth guitar line which I like alot. For the chorus the drums quicken in pace and the guitars (including bass) slip into a more standard punk-style riff. Roars are again overdone, but not stupidly so.
There's also a middle section of note, where all instruments simply follow a steady rhythm with little instrumental flourishes here and there before another chorus w/ extra drum fills. Fades out on a powerchord.
Really good song, I liked it alot. 9/10 (The highest rating I've given any of yours?)

Manic Street Preachers - You Love Us
Rock music with a basic driving rhythm, it establishes that fact right away. A little lead guitar, then the singer starts. His voice is very suitable, it's strong, but not overpowering.. goes well with the music.
The music itself is pretty simple, with the root note bass playing and 2 or 3 chord passages. I guess I can try to focus on the lyrics.. but I'm just not sure what he is saying, and I'm too tired to try too hard. I think I heard something about burning a uniform.
Between the verses and choruses, there is a lead guitar doing some fast rock lead guitar, spices it up a bit, not that it was bad without it. I'm noticing a stadium type vibe around this song now.
uh.. at 3:15 it totally changes, theres a new riff, or a new song. Music is harder here, the soloing is getting rather intense, though not technical, just like solos that you hear in rock music. I didn't see the connection. I guess I can consider that to not be part of the song.
I guess I noticed the basic chord progressions etc because I'm analyzing the song to review it. If I was listening normally it probably wouldn't be a big deal, and I'd notice the lead guitar more than anything.
It's rock music, not trying to be too fancy or anything, and that's ok. I usually like something a bit different in music, Not saying I don't like any simple songs.. I'm not sure why I like those certain songs, but I know this wasn't one of them.

I've reviewed another song by these guys before (The Streets Fell Into My Window), which was awesome, so I have high hopes.
The Red Paintings - Dead Adults - 7:02
Starts with what could be a gospel organ chord in the background, and some mellow sounding picking in the fore, I think. This repeats itself a couple of times, and then makes some great changes and progressions as it keeps going. It sounds like there's other, subtle stuff going on, but it's too much for me to think about and type out. This sounds very promising.
Vocalist comes in about 0:50. He's not bad, sounds like he'd have a good voice for folk, actually. The music, though still good, is keeping itself rather in the background (apart from little electronic - I think - flourishes), to allow the focus to fall on him. After his verse there's a very nice instrumental section.
Vocals come back in, and this time towards the end of the verse he changes it up a bit - first singing a line in a higher pitch, and then along with another voice (as usual, I can't tell whether it's another person, or himself double-tracked). Pretty cool.
Carries on in this vein until about 2:30, when louder guitars start coming in, in little stabs. They resolve themselves into a proper guitar part eventually, and the guy sings out good and clear over the top. It's a nice progression from what there was before, especially since just prior to these new guitars I was thinking that if the song just continued in the vein it was in, it'd be decidedly difficult to be enthusiastic about it towards the end.
The guitar calms down, and the guy's vocals take my attention again. He sounds slightly drunk now, but in a good way, and again is joined by the occasional backing vocal.
Now he's whispering over a very sparse background, occasionally including what sounds like a very sibilant gong. It fades out on this same background, just without the vocals.
9.5/10 It lacked something to take it to a perfect score, but otherwise an excellent song. I'll have to look into getting this album somewhere.

Baby Huey – Listen To Me (6:41)
I’ve been interested in hearing this guy since you mentioned him in the Soul Thread. That’s all I’ve actually heard about him, though.
The recording sounds a bit old, grainy… early 70’s, perhaps. It certainly fits with the style, as it seems to flirt with funk while maintaining the big band soul sound. It reminds me of a Bond song in many ways, though I’m not sure exactly why. It bears a little resemblance to the main theme, I suppose. The band is very tight throughout. It all sounds rehearsed bar the vocals, which are quite extravagant at times, and maybe the guitar. His vocals remind me of James Brown, not because their voices are particularly alike but because they share mannerisms.
The song begins with a muted guitar riff. It’s short and repetitive, but embellished by a short flourish at the end of each measure which keeps it fresh. Drums are there from the start too. They’re a little bit jazzy; laid back with a little “hole” on the last beat. He also adds little fills to break things up a bit, though far less often. At the end of his first fill, an electric organ comes in and this makes the piece sound a lot fuller. This is good, it’s building but doing so subtly.
Vocals have crept in at this stage, a few yelps and “yeahs” here and there. Horn section comes in too, playing long stretches (almost 4 bars at a time). When the main vocal begins, they ease off and fill in the gaps the way a guitar would in blues. The main vocal line shows what a great voice the singer (Huey?) has, it’s doubled by a guitar for an interesting and beautiful effect.
There’s a couple of cool breakdowns (?), where rhythmic stabs of horns, (distorted) guitar, drums, the lot give it that Bond feel again (am I being unfair?), which I like. The singer is comfortable enough to let out some very feminine shrieks, which I always welcome, including one before the guitar solo which is very melodic (backed by a reggae-style chopped organ) before the piece returns to the main theme. I’m speaking as if this is literally broken up, but the entire song is really one theme. Song fades out to the main (vocal) theme…
I really like this tune and see no reason not to give it 10/10.

Don't Go Away Mad - Motley Crue
Pick slide, well I think it is, intro then straight into a bit of guitar picking and your punchy bass+crash moments. A quick bumbum-ta and the drums and bass come in proper (the bass is quite interesting), with the vocalist giving out a call of something I can't decipher. I think it's 'One more time'...dunno. The mini solo is pretty good.
At 35 seconds the vocals come in and it's all pretty standard. The vocalist reminds me of Geddy Lee but I'm not enjoying his voice as much. This verse section carries on till around about the 1 minute mark and the chorus section fires up, it doesn't make much of an impact though. There's another mini-solo after the chorus which is again pretty good.
The verse/chorus section repeats once again. The lyrics really stick out as being pretty lame, 'That's alright, that’s ok, let's turn the page'.
The tempo gets up'd but the drumming doesn't seem to be doing enough to really get the song going. The solo is good but again it doesn't hit anything to make the song really get going. The 'breakdown' section (that's what I'm gonna call it 'cause I can't think of anything else to call it) at the 3 min mark again doesn't catch me, it all feels a bit 'paintbynumbers'ish.
The song rises once again from the ashes but it's all getting a bit repetitive now. The repetition of the same lyric is getting a tad tedious and the solo at the end feels like one of those last desperate stabs.
Overall, the song wasn't that bad, I would rate it 5/10. I think I would need to be more in the mood for the song to give it a higher rating, or maybe give more time to let the sound grow on me.
Gonna go pull on some leather trousers and play GTA:VC.

I know Biffy Clyro; I've just never heard more than a couple of songs by them.
Biffy Clyro - Bonanzoid Deathgrip - 4:20
Starts off with some slightly uneasy, spacey-sounding guitar, before a catchy little drum beat rises in volume in the background. It reaches its regular volume about the same time as the vocalist comes in. He's not bad; nothing to write home about, but not bad either.
Little cymbal work starts every couple of beats in the background, as the vocals change their delivery for a couple of lines. Quite catchy. Goes back to what it was before afterwards, though.
Cymbal work again around 1:50, with the same change in delivery as before; I assume this is the chorus. After that chorus, the music changes entirely. Again, the best word to describe the guitar is "awkward", but that sounds like an insult. Anyway, it soon changes into a very cool catchy little bit, which is repeated straight after in riff form. And the vocalist is yelling?/screaming? Something in the middle, certainly. This must be The Other Side of Biffy Clyro.
Anyway, at first he sounded rather uncertain of himself, but he sounds slightly better on the next lines. Riff is good. Nice little melodic thing plays, and then joins in with the riff at the same time. Riff is awesome.
I love that melodic-bit-mixed-with-riff. I couldn't care less what he - or the suddenly appearing backing vocalists - is singing, as I'm basically not listening to him any more. And this pretty much carries on for the rest of the song.
8/10 It started off sounding kind of unsure of itself, and at times I was rather unsure of it, but the last couple of minutes were just great. Not too bad, overall.

I have made brief acquaintance with this band. I downloaded two songs, It's Catching Up and The End of All Things, possibly from you for Forced Listening. I don't remember reviewing them, but that's where I got them. I was reading an interview with Dave Grohl a few days ago and he cited them as an influence, so yay!
On to the song, then. Begins with some percussive tapping on the guitar to simulate drums, and very distorted guitar enters. It sounds like it's been recorded with the mic on full volume, and I guess this is the effect he's going for. I suppose it has potential. The verse reminds me of Tenacious D for some reason, it's got the same Dio-style over-dramatic vocals. I expect him to start ranting about pixies, but instead he has something more personal to convey. There's some nice picked guitar lines behind the vocal.
The chorus is quickly strummed chords again, very distorted, sounds positively awful. I can't stand it. The vocal is OK, but nothing spectacular. "I've been lying to myself, lying to myself for so long... I've been lying in a state of grace." And thence we have the title, though I have no idea what it means. :( This is quite a long song, considering there's not much to it. Being a Dylan fanatic, I can't criticise, but I haven't been enjoying it much to date so it seems ultimately worse.
What can I say? It didn't move me, it felt cold. Sorry. 2/10.

The Pogues - Fiesta
I've never heard The Pogues, but on my city's local music forum there are a couple of users who mention them quite frequently.
The song starts off with a slow jazz bit, I'd say. All of a sudden the horn(s) go nuts and up the tempo. The drums come in with some accoustic guitar and the odd yell. What? An accordian! The vocals didn't suprise me much. For me they don't add much, but they don't take away anything either. The chorus sounds similar to Dropkick Murphys, which is most definitely a good thing. Alright. There goes my legs. Okay, now my upper body. Now I'm doing a little jig in my chair.
Verdict: 8/10 - Nothing groundbreaking. It's a fun song that I can see myself listening to in the future. Providing this song is a strong indicator of The Pogues, I will most likely check them out more thoroughly.

The Most Serene Republic - Content Was Always My Favourite Colour
Begins with some soft hissing and such. Could go anywhere from here. A quiet note in the background swells into fuzzy synth percussion and vocals. It's really poppy and not sure if I like it yet. It's lacking some atmosphere The Postal Service has. I like the way the vocal tracks are layered. Everything is really fuzzy and I can't tell if it's intentional.
Weird. Everything just dropped out except for like 3 vocal tracks and clapping. Those stay and keyboards come in. Then that section ends abruptly when acoustic guitar comes strumming in all alone. The vocals and keys and electric guitar joins. Then we get the synth percussion again. This is more progressive than the postal service but also less organized sounding. Everythign just jumps around, like a puzzle that was jammed together. I kind of like that but at the same time, it sounds like it's from a lack of experience.
The layering was the real strongpoint here. They seemed to have done an excellent job creating textures through layering. I might try that sometime.
It was all good but it seemed like it was written by people who can write good parts but not put them together.

I'm not a great fan of BTBAM. In fact, The Silent Circus seems to drop lower in my estimation every time I play it.
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies - 7:23
Starts off with synths. Are they trying to be HORSE now? I like the synths in HORSE's songs, but I'm not sure how to react here.
Pretty soon the guitars join in, emulating the synths alongside them. At first I hated this; the tone of the guitar and the style it's played in all remind me of bits of other BTBAM songs I hate, but then the drums get in on the act and the guitars start switching it up a bit, and we actually have a pretty cool intro.
Some nice double bass here and there, and for a while the intro continues to improve. Then, about 50 seconds in, it goes into a kind of half-hearted version of itself; the tone is uninspiring, and the melody itself becomes more annoying than triumphant. Thankfully it doesn't go on for too long before the guitar spirals higher and out, and the next part of the song begins.
Vocals come in, and thank the Lord they're not using their death metal style. The vocals used are kind of hushed, slightly higher than normal voice pitch, and not bad. The guitar work in the background has some nice flashes.
Ah, but of course. 1:40 in, the death metal vocals start. Let me explain: Between the Buried and Me have the worst harsh vocals I've ever encountered. The word I always come upon in trying to get across why is "forced"; they just sound so unnaturally pushed out, it's awful. I've thought this since my very first encounter with the band, and here the vocals haven't really improved any. The music in the background is alright (though again, I've never been much of a fan of their heavier music, as I think it sounds - again - forced a lot of the time), with some nice variations and flourishes here and there, but I've pretty much written off any section with those vocals.
Was there any reason for that sudden stop around 2:12? :-/
Non-harsh vocals return around 3:00, although now they seem to have some kind of weak electronic effect on them, which isn't much better. An annoying guitar squiggle pops up in the background. The death vocals come back for a couple of lines after them, too.
Ah, piano, acoustic guitar. I think this is the part I've been waiting for. The piano isn't prevalent - just a few notes here and there at the ends of phrases and things - and the acoustic is doing most of the work. The clean vocals aren't bad now (no weak electronica), and now - a little bit later in the song - there's a very nice, relaxed electric solo going on. Heavy riffing comes in again, but it's careful not to show off too much - it lets the continuing solo take centre stage. This is the part of them I like.
And the song just fades out on that. I liked the end section, as you can see, but even that good solo got a bit too Dragonforce-without-the-self-deprecation at the end, and I was annoyed that there was no singing. Still, better than anything else by them, bar Mordecai.

Fastlane - King Geedorah
The intro makes me think the song is meant to make a transition from the last track to this one with no gap. The stand out sample in the track is a bendy bluesy guitar diddly thing, which loops on its self and begins to sound really un-natural very quickly. The strings sample sounds strange also, I don't like how it meshes with the guitar. The beat sounds really weak, got nothing to it at all, paper-think, doesn't do anything for me.
Ah ha, '3, 2, 1, Go!', this should be goo...oh no, it's the same thing again. It's getting really repetitive now. The guys lyrics and flow aren't very appealing to me. I googl'd and found out this is a MFDoom alias so now I'm not as surprised about not liking it.
This guy seems to agree with me;
One of the problems with the production on the tracks is that a main groove is established in the sequence and on a couple of the early tracks like Fastlane can on occasion get a bit tired towards the end of the track, however tracks where the sample is perfect for looping like Anti-Matter, this is not a failing at all.
There isn't much else to say, there is the odd break in the sample and limp delivery, the end part is quite cool/amusing - an old skool radio message thing describing how the 3-headed space alien King Geedorah has appeared, I think with a friend.
Overall I rate it a 3/10.

Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold (4:03)
I've heard of this band before, I think, but never anything by them. I was expecting a punk band based on the name, so this is a surprise (though there are moments in the song which remind of AFI, strangely)
The song begins with a high-pitched "ba ba dada", which repeats and speeds and then the chorus begins. It's sung by the same guy and is extremely catchy. The lyrics are jokey, "Take a look at my girlfriend/She's the only one I got/She's not much of a girlfriend/I never seem to get a lot". The chorus from an instrumetal POV features heavy bass and simple, pounding drums and keys. Very rhythmic.
Now the rapper has come in for the verse. His style is half-sung, half-rapped and the emphasis is again very much on the rhythm. Get out your rhyming dictionary, though, because the lyrics are absolutely awful. "She's got a smile that would make the most senile annoying old man bit his tongue, I'm not done." He's clearly sacrificed his lyrics to fit the beat (though a great rapper could always find a way to fit), and it's not as if he's not capable of good lyrics, for example:
"I know I'm young but if I had to choose her or the sun I'd be one nocturnal son of a gun". Goofy, I know, but it shows he's capable of amusing and coherent lyrics which is why the awful lyrics generally on display are such a disappointment. In a song such as this it's impossible not to focus on words and this song really suffers for it as it has a really good beat, chorus and music. One last word about the music... there's some very nice clean electric guitar throughout, especially a part towards the end which reminds me of AFI's Death of Seasons.
The jokey theme, and the combination of rap and pop/rock and funky music reminds me of bands like the Republic of Loose (a song of whom I'll edit into my choices) and for some reason I'm also reminded of that "Shaniqua" song. Rambling aside, I'd give this song a 6/10 though I'd have liked it to be more.

I've heard the Pogues before, but I can't really remember particular songs, but I know they're good, so here we go.
Pogues - Fiesta
Starts very relaxed, Jazzy I would say. With a saxophone (I think, it might be a trumpet, I'm not very good at recognising them :p) and bass.
Now the song really gets going, party brass and a dancy mood, I now comprehend the title. It also has that Brasilian 'hey-it's-a-party-time-prrrrraaaah' sound. Ah, the vocals, good vocals, Irish accent for the English and something that sounds like attempted Spanish, or Perhaps Portuguese, which would make more sense, sounding a bit like Floggin' Molly's vocals (or vice versa). Liking this, let's see how the chorus is.
Yep, as I expected, a sing a long pub chorus, it's in English, followed by some more trumpets. Speaking of Flogging Molly, they totally ripped off the Pogues, it seems, both great bands though. Seems to be a tribute to Rio (de Janeiro, I assume), it really does sound like 'CarnaBOAAL' as the Brasilians say it.
Here's that verse again, with a rather odd voice change in this one, amusing though. Yep, it's still good. Chorus, more Prrrrraahs and whistles. The bass is quite excellent, there's even a little bass interlude. It's all very nice. Very uplifting, happy song, good for happy occasions down town, I would say.
9.2/10, very much my style of music. Good stuff.

Nirvana - Incesticide - 01 - Dive
The lesser known album, indeed, a B-sides stop-gap release from a band more known for the actual LP's. The album is a pretty nice collection of extra material, Aneursym sounds like a big Nirvana single, Sliver was a minor hit. But there's good music to be found in the depths of this release. Onto the song review.
It started off with a neat little bassline, then breaks into a very standard Nirvana riff, even for them. Some might appreciate Grohl's drumming, but in this song, the tinking of the high-hat is unneccesary. The chorus is the high point so far, about a minute in. It's sort of an optimistic riff, the elevating chords make it so. It's neat.
Wash, cycle, rinse, repeat. The verse and chorus are the same as before, so that eats up another minute and a half. The bridge comes... Mr. Novoselic plays the beginning bassline in a higher key, for four measure. Kurt's solo comes in, following Krist's line, for four measures. The chorus appears again, slightly harder drumming. Ends with some pounding and Kurt shouting "Dive in me".
I give it a 4/10. It's nothing special, and I could hear much better Nirvana. This sounds like Nirvana from their Bleach days, and they probably wrote the song when they recorded it.

Alice in Chains - Sludge Factory
Starts with a simple riff and falsetto vocals that go 'ooh' and Staley singing 'Oh yeah'. Then the verse kicks in, typical Alice in Chains verse, dramatic, monotone singing, still over the same riff. "I'm high" jumps out, typical drug influenced AIC song. Now there's something that sounds like a chorus, but it's still over the same riff.
Another verse, and now there's finally a change of riffing, it's a good riff, but I don't think it really fits the singing.
Back the 'ooh ooh' oh yeah' part. I know Alice in Chains are usually repetitive, and it usually works but this is getting a bit tiresome, the same riff and verse again.
Ah, a solo, desperately needed, not a bad solo, seems a bit hassled though, improvised at the spot.
The chorus again, it is a good riff, but I still don't like the singing over it.
Then we have the intro part again, and now that riff is palm muted, and there's a bit of soloing and some weird vocals over it. This song is definitely way too long and doesn't have enough variation to remain interesting.
A long, long outro, the soloing is pretty cool, but the rest of the song has been too long to keep me interested. Waiting for the end now. They're still going.
It finally ends, this was not a very good song, I've heard much better songs by Alice in Chains.

I've heard things about BFB (mostly reviews), but I've never heard them myself.
Blood For Blood - White Trash Anthem - 3:37
Starts with a simple, but very catchy and effective, riff. Simple drums too. The whole thing speaks of simple, but based on what I know about the band (and the name of the song, etc), I'm not surprised. In fact this is a pretty good start.
Spoken word introduction over the catchiness; he's setting down a mission statement for the song, and leaving us in no doubt of what kind of song it is. It's about the haves versus the have-nots, for anyone interested. He finishes his little speech, and the music settles down into a more familiar chugging rhythm. A few seconds of this, and then, in the poetic words of Blood For Blood, "Let's go!"
From here it goes into a fairly high-quality, but "generic" (in a way), punk song; music chugging along regularly, vocalist singing catchy, rhyming verse (occasionally backed up by gang backing-vocals). It's good. The chorus is focused on the title of the song; "I'll never be your kind of white-" seems the main line, before a burst of fast-paced vocals at the end of each chorus, which reminds me of South Park songs (Kyle's Mom's a Bitch, for example) in which they try to cram as many syllables as possible into a line, whilst still staying in time. That's a compliment, though.
He does like his "let's go!"s.
Two choruses later, the music slows down a bit (for some nice, slower chugging) to allow the vocalist time to berate anyone who might be offended by the song. I like the end statement; "I never had enough money, or enough privilege to be white; I'm white trash, and society better learn to recognise the difference." Not sure if I'd agree with the philosophy, but I quite like the line for some reason. And the song fades out on a continued tone, stretched out.
7/10, I think. It's a good, solid song, but it's not one that'l have me scurrying to buy an album of theirs.

Bonfire Madigan - 88 Arbitrary Configurations
The file didn't quite finish, and I'm not about to do it ALL again for that last 3%.
It starts with a cello playing just some low notes, and a woman singing with a bit of force. Seems quite similar to Dresden Dolls, just without piano. Another string instrument or 2 join in and with some very low key drums. I cant tell what she is singing, except the word "Heaven" every now and then.
The music has stops at the end of a lot of the bars. It sounds a bit thin and gutless with just these strings making the music. It could be played live exactly like this, seems like nothing is added, over dubbed or effected in any way at all. I'm having a bit of trouble liking this.
2 mins in is a nice instrumental section. It's more melodic and flowing now, not so stabby. I'm liking the second half more than the first. There's some more singing, and she has strong mid range on her voice, but it's not a ear-murdering sound like Evanescence.
There is a bit of a musical climax here, I thought this nicely flowing bit would go to the end, but for the last 30+ seconds it goes back to the original stop/start/stab feel. Slows down a bit at the end.. and I can only imagine that it ends perfectly, since I'm being generous and lost those last few seconds due to YSI ****ing up (once again).
Hmm, not bad, not real great either. To say what I feel wouldn't make much sense.. but I feel it was really lacking in dimension, and somehow, whatever that is, let the song down for me. The music was ok, it just needed to take up lots more space. 6.5/10

The song opens with a Tenor, I think, sax line with delay on it. Shortly joined by Sort of Afrian Tribal percussion. The sax drops out and is shortly replaced by a heavy bass line with occasional interruptions by a guitar. I guess the whole thing has a kind of reggaeish feel to it.
About one minute in the sax re-enters and is accompanied by some proper drums. This is extremely chilled out and cool. I like it
The Sax drops out and the drum line gets a bit heavier and more technical which injects a bt of pace into the song. The guitar coes back in, although this time it is far more prominent. A choir, sort of - ...well a collection of voices. I can call it what I like, thank you very much - is layered over the top.
After a rather extended intro, 2:20, the proper vocals come in. They're mostly what I expect; quite fast paced with the right sort of accent. I could try and pick out some lyrics, but it would most likely take me several years :upset: What we have here are short sections of vocals spaced out with instrumental sections. Good track so far.
We head back to the choir section of times gone past, before branching off in a new direction. Which, to be truthful, isn't all that new as it is more tribal percussion. I keep on expecting to hear elephants in the background. There really should be elephants. To the songs credit there are some monkey noises. There are also guitar and bass parts randomly distributed amongst the percussion. The song kicks back into full flow around 4:30 and is soon joined by heavily porcessed vocals which would not be wholly out of place in a Daft Punk song. Not a bad mix, I think.
Teh vocals drop back out and are replaced by some simple, yet effective, guitar lines before the choir saunter back in from whenever they've been hiding. A short breakdown on the drums later and the backing band drop out leaving the choir to take centre stage, presumably to make up for all of the time they wasted by hiding. This section is really cool, and a really great end to the song.
And there we have the end of the song. I haven't had very much experience with Dub, but this has raised the bar of my expectations ridiculously high. 9.5/10
The song last a half mark due to the lack of elephants.

The Curse Of Monkey Island - A Pirate I Was Meant To Be
well.. Is this from the game or a band with named after Monkey Island? I've only played MI 1 and 2.
There is some sea shanty type music including a ukelele? Some spoken words, a few pirates conversing. These are very loud and it seems as though the music is just meant to be in the background. Must be from the game. The music is actually really good, it's well written and sounds really piratey and fun, I just wish it was easier to hear.
Anyway, there's some slightly.. non-humorous spoken lines about being on the ship, doing work, etc. Then there's the singing bits too, spread out over all the verses in the song are the themes that the pirates have to face: not being able to sing in tune, bad breath, attacking an enemy ship, scurvy...
These verses are interspersed with some spoken word, nothing stood out as being really funny, so I'm a bit disapponited as I expected much more with from a Monkey Island thing. Maybe I just wasnt listening closely enough. One of the guys is really weak sounding.. must be Guybrush, but I even imagined him to sound tougher than that.
The choruses are short and harmonized by the brutes. There are some flashes of quick accordion which is pretty cool, makes me pick up some attention. Well, I think I like the choruses the best because they are the most musical.
They end it by saying "I guess the song is over now". And that's it.
The music was cool, but obviously not the focus, that's a pity. With that I would have hoped for more humorous lyrics/speech to make it good, but I just didn't find them that funny. I feel a bit let down by it.

Marcy Playground - Rebel Sodville (5:00)
Sorry for the delay. I had a bit of trouble tracking this down but, obviously, that doesn't account for a 4-hour delay. As for the band, I've never heard of them so I had no idea what to expect.
It begins with a crash of distorted, trippy electric guitars picked up and down. It reminds me a little of Oasis and a little of bands like the Black Crowes. It resolves to a clean picked chord progression as the vocals come in. A couple of drum fills but the rhythm is pretty constant throughout. Bass is inaudible. The singer reminds me of Michael Stipe or somebody else who I can't quite put my finger on - he's at least distinctive. I'm not particularly fond of his voice but it wouldn't alter my enjoyment of the song considerably.
I'm guessing the song is mid-90's, post-grunge radio rock though this may not have been a single. If I'm right, give me a hell yeah. For some reason I'm consistently reminded of the song "The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson, though I haven't heard that song in a very long time. There's a line that's repeated two or three times in the song which concludes with the words "in the court of Rebel Sodville", which I guess is where the title is derived from, and it's that moment which reminds me of the prog. song. Strange.
Anyway, I ramble. The song as a whole isn't hugely eventful or interesting, I'm afraid, though that may simply be a reflection on my mood. It seems to be having the same effect REM and those bands have on me, it just sounds dull. There are moments which I enjoy, the intro guitar is very promising and the clean, picked guitar behind the verses is very nice. If things would only pick up and the vocal was a bit more upbeat, I'm sure I'd enjoy it more. As it is, it seems a little 'trippy', though I know that's the wrong word. The vocal is actually interesting at times, he sometimes injects a bit of extra enthusiasm and the song sounds brighter for it but not often enough for my liking.
Overall, I'd give the song a mere 4/10. Instrumentally and even vocally it's quite good, but the song itself just doesn't hold much for me.

NEW RULE
A new rule has been put into place on MX. There is to be no songs illegally uploaded anywhere (this includes YouSendIt, MegaUpload, and others) and a link posted on this site. This is a safety measure inacted by the owner of these forums to keep himself and the users out of trouble. To prevent a lot of confusion, all songs uploaded is illegal, even if the band is not on an RIAA label. Unless you have written permission from the owner of the song, you cannot upload it. Instead you can trade the songs via email, via an Instant messenging service, or soulseek. You can put this information at the end of your post near the songs.
Sorry for any inconvience this may cause, enjoy your Forced Listening.
From now on I'll be posting my links in my ezboard, which I will link in place of my song recommendations. If anybody else wants to use that ezboard to host their links, feel free. I've created a forum specifically for YSI links.

Holy hell, did I ever forget about this. I even went and watched an episode of Scrubs in the middle.
Heard of, but never heard. Interested to hear, though.
Kaizer's Orchestra - Resistanten - 2:59
Starts off with a mid-paced, catchy 1-2 rhythm played alternately on a stringed instrument of some kind (unable to make it out exactly) and a clash of percussion. It's a promising start, and since I was expecting something somewhat mournful and/or slow, rather surprising.
A double beat introduces the verse. The guy sings in German, I think - he reminds me somewhat of Blixa Bargeld, and I'm unsure whether it is this connection that make me feel the band remind of Einsturzende Neubauten, or whether I already thought that and it's a coincidence. Anyway, I like it. Though I know German, I'm not picking up on everything he says, concentrating as I am on writing the review. It's got a good, jumpy little melody to it though, sounds almost like a nursery rhyme rhythm.
He reaches the end of his verse, and what I assume is the chorus starts. Shouts of hallelujah..interesting. Nice support from backing vocalists and deep horns. The next verse starts accompanied by trumpets playing a slightly Spanish sounding bit. He keeps mentioning Hong Kong. It's hard to keep up with all the instruments being used, so I don't think I'll attempt to. It is indeed an orchestra of some kind.
About halfway through, I think after another chorus, the song changes a bit. Some strings - violins or something - play that fiddly, quickly-back-and-forth thing that makes a creepy noise and is often used to create suspense in films and television. Italian name, I forget what it is.
Anyway, that lasts a short while only, as he is soon re-joined by the pounding beat that's been with him since the start. The horns rejoin, too. His delivery seems to be getting more and more excited, which is all for the better.
Everything goes to review-hell towards the end: far too much to type about. Gang chanted vocals, a more fleshed out sound to the song and more feature in the end of this rather chaotic three minute song.
9/10 Definitely piqued my interest. So much to write about for three minutes of song.

Boris - Ibitsu (3:21)
I've listened to this song over and over, wondering exactly how I was going to review it. It's a relatively short and coherent song, which is exactly what I like, but not the easiest to talk about. So I decided I'd just start writing and see what happened.
The song begins with a firm statement of intent, a rash of feedback on then some furious distorted blues bends. The recording quality seems to be intentionally dodgy, reminds me of alt-blues bands like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion... bands the White Stripes wish they were. The recording is boxy, the drums are hit hard and the guitar threatens to jump out and bite your neck. It's a very live recording... it may even be a live recording.
All I can hear for most of the song is loud drums and louder guitars, they really dominate, though the bass is definitely there, audible occasionally when the guitarist eases off. The guitarist is extremely good, his licks are tasteful and catchy, though hardly groundbreaking. Then again, this is rock n' roll, it's not supposed to be groundbreaking. I've heard there's a very good hard blues scene in Japan and these guys would definitely fit in there.
The guitar melodies remind me of the classic blues players like Stevie Ray Vaughan, of classic rock guitarists like Joe Walsh, and though I can't pinpoint where, of the Wildhearts. I should have known :p The vocalist is again typical for the style, he occasionally betrays his Japaneseness but generally he sounds like he could be from anywhere. His manic style and throatwrenching delivery sound painful to do but are great to hear. Good stuff. The song zips by very quickly, it's one of those songs.
Impressive, 8/10.

Mark Lanegan - Don't Forget Me - 3:13
Starts with some piano. I like piano, but this actually reminds me of some Manowar piano. Kind of dramatic sounding. Knowing what little I do of Mark Lanegan though, I doubt this is going to turn into a sweeping metal ballad. Actually it very soon (as in, a couple of seconds in) resolves itself into a fairly familiar, and less dramatic sounding, melody anyway.
His voice comes in pretty soon. Low, kinda gravelly. Reminds me of Peter Gabriel. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. I can't really make out what he's saying, but the rest of his band (or instrumentation, at least) joins him more or less as he starts singing. I think I like the bass, though that thought wavers a little because of the tone, for some reason. Anyway, the whole thing's not bad, little breaks in the music after every line or two. I can hear what he's saying more clearly now, though I'm aware that I'm not paying much attention.
Piano returns, as a slightly different section kicks in. The piano's very minimal (a few notes here and there), but I like it. Some very pointed, lively-in-a-lazy-way guitar after what I assume is the chorus (he said "don't forget me, dear" at the end, anyway), as the piano returns in more noticeable form to accompany it.
Okay, I've decided I do like the bass. Another "don't forget me, dear", and most of the song fades out, leaving only the piano to pick up the somewhat mournful melody it played at the beginning, which is a good way to end it, I think.
7/10 It was alright. I'm not sure how much I'll re-listen to it though, and overall it felt like something was lacking. Not bad, though.

Beck - O Maria
Some honky tonk sounding piano. Ahh, it's Bartender's theme song. Slow swing brushed drums.. very much a song for the bar, with dancing skeletons, etc.
His voice sounds strange, a bit like that squeaky guy form Cypress Hill. The music is laid back as.. sourdough. Yes, it just seems like the right word... "sourdough". There's whistly things that give that toe tapping, lazy bar room feel. Ooh, short trumpet solo too.
I'm kind of sick of listening to stuff today (I did this audio hardware experiment before), so something like this is nice to kick back to. It doesn't demand attention. Good, because I'm not really paying any.
Well, it's 4 minutes long, didn't seem to change that much. I wonder why his voice stood out so much to me.. maybe because the music was pretty subdued. Didn't find the song all that special, maybe I'm just in the wrong mood now. I probably need to listen to it again with more focus, but right now, I really feel like a drink.

I think the Three Second Memory song is by a band called "Datura", at least that's the impression I got when I searched for it. Didn't find an mp3 though.
Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes (3:32)
You said the lyrics are great, so that's what I'll focus on I guess. Never heard of the guy, btw, I'm guessing he's an Aussie though. A good strong Irish name, though. :D
The song is based around a simple acoustic guitar melody which is ornamented every now and then with a banjo (I think) melody and some varying percussion. For the most part, he's just strumming open chords, capoe'd somewhere. His voice isn't particularly brilliant, a little nasal, but it's at least original. It's pleasant, which helps the general wistful tone of the song.
I don't know why but I keep getting this renaissance feeling from the song, maybe it's the rhtyhm of the banjo part. It's a very nice arrangement, reminds me of the Decemberists some not just because it's a little different but the vocal melody is in a similar style. The lyrics seem to be autobiographical. His girlfriend keeps telling him to stop wasting his time with music and songwriting and to concentrate on real things, "songs are made of air, they're not of any use to her." I like his prose style.
I like this song. It's not immediately likeable, but it's a grower. The arrangement is great and his use of instruments sets him apart. The lyrics are also, as you mentioned, very good. 8/10.

The Coral - Skeleton Key
Woah, what the hell? I have heard quite a few Coral songs, they're always nice and soothing pop rock. But this, this sounds like something that the Bard from Asterix wrote. Starts slightly circussy, but it soon combines that with a sort of western sound. Like I said the guitar is very weird, very much bent or 'tremelo'd'. The song seems to glide between Circus horror and western adventure chanting. The vocals are a bit of a group shout.
There's also a haunting interlude, very much emphasising the Skeleton Key title. The first time I heard this, I was pretty much stunned, but after second listening, it's growing on me, it's still WEIRD.
7.5/10, sorry for the short review. I just can't describe it. :p
