Finntroll - Den Hornkrönte Konungen

I've heard them before and would like to start listening to them because I've heard good things.

Begins with a cool little drum fill. Then a fast key board and guitar bit that is very melodic and fast. Then vocals enter. Very black metal. They are decent. There is a little keyboard solo that is alright, but far short of spectacular. Especially since it comes back again.

I like the drums, who's the drummer for this band?

A fast song. Not a lot happens until about halfway through, then there is a bit with lots of keyboards. I like this section a lot. There is a funny yell in there though, not a scream, a yell. Now into an even faster section that sounds like battle music. It's pretty cool.

Lots and lots of synths here. I can sort of hear the folk but I'd call it keys heavy black metal. The drummer is very good.

I own and love both Fantomas and Delirium Cordia; I've not heard anything from The Director's Cut, but I know all about the concept of it. Basically I'm expecting something more song-like than the others, and also not a little creepy.
Fantomas - Rosemary's Baby - 3:20

Well, the creepiness is fulfilled in the first few seconds. Like a twisted nursery rhyme, Mike Patton's high-pitched la-la-la-ing comes in over tinkly glockenspiel background music. Soon settles into more traditional band-like structure; the guitar playing in the background (low, slow and ominous), and the drums dnk and tish quietly, while Patton continues lalala-ing in his regular (if, indeed, he can be said to have a regular) voice.

Carries on more or less like this for quite a while, though with the guitar growing louder, before it all comes to head around the 1:00, as Patton changes his vocal patterns, and the guitar actually starts riffing.

Back into the lalalaing, just with this riffing, and more determined drumming behind it. Around 2:00, the Lombardo really starts pounding the drums, with incredibly quick fills, and Patton goes a little more spastic with his vocals. Even more sickly sweet (sweeter than before I mean) lalalaing comes in after this (when the song calms down a bit) along with actual samples of distressed baby noises.

It finished more like an actual song, with something of a riff (!), over which Patton sings words (!!). And it comes to an abrupt stop like that.

8.5/10 Sorry for the short review, there was really quite little to go on, I think. Good song though.

Faith No More - Edge of the World

I had heard very little music from Faith No More. The only song I can recall hearing was “Epic” :p. However, I do own two Mr. Bungle albums. So, I am not very ignorant to the ways of the Mike Patton.

The track opens with pop like scatting and snapping, most likely to be funny or odd. Drums, piano and a bass enter, each supporting Patton’s lead vocals well, while occasionally taking a couple of lead lines. Patton’s vocals are so far nicely done, and the bass playing really sticks out to me. The song is slow and has a Jazz lounge sound to it, minus parts of the chorus. There is a back up vocalist, occasionally unnoticeable. Possibly because it is just Patton’s vocals stacked.

After awhile of the same routine the pianist plays a small solo. Nothing really extraordinary, and he seems to stick to the same lines, but good. A horn player adds in. I believe it is a saxophone. The song slowly fades out.

Pretty good, and not what I was expecting.

Widespread Panic - Blue Indian

Never heard of these guys and to be honest I was expecting some heavy stuff, due to the bands title, however the songs name Blue Indian made my ponder, Turns out that its almost country music, two contributing factors to this are the bassist playing just about a walking bassline, and the singer just reminds me of a country singer.

Starts of with a nice clean chord progression on guitar. The drums then come in for a measure, then followed by keys and bass, and this is where the country sound does developed and then topped off by the singer. Its very chilled and relaxed, little key runs throughout the verse which are nice.

Pre-Chorus and the bassline changes and the singer sings a bit more abruptly, and the guitars sound uses a little bit of staccato in their chord progression.

Then into the chorus and it runs smoothly similar to the start. And their is backup singers which don't really impress me. Sounds like there is a flute or something at [01:59].

It then exits into a guitar solo, which meshes really well with the song, very slow and relaxed. Using tonality as a key, its very nice.

The singer then comes in with a more raspy 'effect' and the keys also get a more noticable part. It all sounds really nice. This then resolves into a similar part as the verses.

The back up vocals sort of chill it out again and the instument I can put my finger on, I don't think it is a flute, it just adds to the music.

Ending with a slow band stabs and then together on a fadeout.

As previously mentioned this was not what I expected. However I did enjoy it, their weren't any standout musicians however having said that they all seemed to be decent. The vocalist got annoying in the end but it wasn't too bad.

Final Verdict -

8.5/10

Pain of Salvation - Fandango

This song starts with classical sounding that gradually gets fast then a keyboard comes over the guitar. At 0:47 the vocals come in with a low moaning voice. At 1:07 the singing changes to a sharp, carefull voice. Throughout this song the singing is almost like a choir and it sets the mood for the song. In what I'm pretty sure is the chorus there is a very nice sounding guitar riff under the singing. The keyboards sound very nice throughout this song.

Overall this is a very interesting song, it's pretty slow burning but it's still very good. I especially liked the vocals in this song the singer is very talented

The Haunted - All against All

Band starts off with an in your face heavy sound. about 30 seconds in the singer enters, screaming hardcore, The band has a punkish sound to me, but almost death metal at the same time. Basic heavy guitar riffs, and the hard hitting drums make this song attractive to me. whoa, change up at about 2:30, change in vocals, somewhat clean(well a lot cleaner compared to how hard he was singing before) I like it. Complements well with the band at that moment, bass line is cool there. 3:15 clean vocal scream blended into a hardscream, *bam!* guitar solo, that was cool, not too long not too short, just right. 3:38 cool guitar solo over, vocals are hard again, back to original guitar riff. song is sounding like it's winding down....4 minutes 33 seconds later the song is complete.

This song was good to me. I liked the change up with the clean vocals, it wasnt the same the whole time, instrumentally and vocally. Good song overall, but I could tell the hardcore screaming would get old with me after a while.
I have never heard anything before by The Haunted, so because I liked this song to a degree, I will check some more stuff by them. Rating: 7.5/10.
Any other recommendations by The Haunted would be nice.

Change - Blind Melon

This song starts off with a good sounding accoustic part that carries through the whole song.
At 0:11 a harmonica comes in adding a cool effect to the song.
At 0:27 very nice soinding vocals come in
At 1:10 there is a guitar solo using a slide(maybe) and the drumming comes in and the song starts.
At 2:14 theres a sweet guitar solo
At 2:56 the song starts to wind down, getting close to the end

Overall this song is a very good song from a very talented band. The best things are the vocals and the guitar solo.

Morbid Angel - Blood on my hands
So, i just picked this to get the thread moving. I have heard an amazing solo from their drummer befroe, so i thought i would give it a shot.
Song opens with fast drumming and guitars. Their drummer is amazing, hes just going nuts on the set. Seems like there are a few different tempos but it works.
at about 0:38 we get vocals, half screaming, half singing. then it goes straight into singing. Then the chorus has the same speed as the intro.
The verse then continues, the same as before. Then the same chorus. I dont see how people could listen only to this. It would bore me. Just the rapid Quarter, Eighth, or sixteenth notes on the drums. not a whole lot of rythmic variaty.
At about 2:20, a solo, which starts pretty random, then grows a little bit. Still kinda random, and very short, only about 30 seconds. Then back into the chorus.

wow thats the whole song. Easiest review ive done
Overall, about a 6/10. Not very original, and the drums kept doing similar things.

Thousand Foot Krutch - All the Way

I have never heard this band, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Starts off with a catchy little riff, then picks up. I don't really like the vocals. The singer is trying to rap, and the lyrics are pretty bad.

The first verse is followed by a cool sounding bridge.

Second verse is more poor rapping. He is managing to stay with the beat, but the lyrics aren't very good.

At 1:47, he stops rapping and starts to sing, followed by more Limp Bizkit-style lyrics.

3/10 I liked the riff, but they singing/rapping was awful.

Kasabian - ID 4:54

Intro : synths or some electronic instrument, doing some "shredding". A good place for shredding guitarts

Synths come in with symphonic, and some electronized distorted guitars. Which spoiled the intro.

0:30, the drums come in, and it starts to sound like linkin park's cure for the itch.

more electronic stuff comes in, the shredding still continues. The synth's symphony and shredding were good, untill those parts came in.

1:12, everything stops, and sythns take sort of a "solo"

1:33, wow, this part is better. More soothing, some leads by the synths, then the vocals come in. The song starts to become nice from here. Some guitar leads during the vocals. The vocals are quite nice actually.

2:47 - "vocal solo', with some very soft electronic parts. The drums still sound like linkin park's electronic songs.

Very good combination, just that some are used badly. The symphonic synths, the shredding electrnonics were good. But the extremely effected, delayed, tremeloed and who knows what sounds are horrible.

They should like replace lead guitars with the shredding electronics, ochestra with snyths, and keep rythmn guitar of power metal the same. That's good electronic rock.

well, this song is great after the 1:33 mark, and the bass lines were pretty great to and energetic. Improvements can be made, but well, i was disappounted that there was no solo. (not guitar, but whatever electronic instruments have to offer)

6.5/10

Carcass - Black Star

I've heard all of the bands on the list but this is the only song I haven't heard (downloaded the album yesterday but haven't had a listen yet)

Begins with a semi cool little riff. It's a bit slow. The drums come in and I don't really feel any energy. The next riff is awesome but still a bit too slow to really get me going. The vocals come in. Very well done the way the trade off each line. Also very easy to understand. Too slow. The drums are really boring me. It's an Opeth speed but without the Opeth charm. I've only heard 3 riffs by the halfway mark. All are very good, but the drums are really boring and it's all too slow. I like the bridge a bit and the demi solo but still too slow. It does begin to pick up druing the solo, which I like very much.

The solo is by far the best part of the song. Overall though, too slow. I hope the entire album isn't like this.

Enslaved - Bounded by Allegiance

Comes in with a neat palm mute riff build up accentuated with unmuted strokes on the chords. A choir backs it in the middle, but it lasts a little bit too long at about 1 1/2 minutes. Weird vocal style, sounds like a monk chat almost. The effects on it make it sound like it was recorded in a large space, adding to the effect of monkness.

I lied, now the real vocals came in, and they are screamy and typical death metal (I hope) style vocals. Neat orchestration backs the band, and the guitar plays with accentuation well. Drums are not very interesting to me as of yet, but the syncopation in the guitar is quite fun.

More monk chants backed by the second riff from earlier. Interesting keyboard work in the background, at least I think it's keyboard. Shifts into the bridge. Just a different riff it sounds like, but no choral accompianament (misspelled). A few times it sounds like it is working into a guitar solo here, but it never does, and then the vocals come back in. Too bad, I would have liked to hear a solo.

I think the mp3 file might have been incomplete because it cuts out very abruptly at 6:38. That cut out was rather disappointing, I was hoping to hear how it finished :-/

Nine Inch Nails - La Mer

I was expecting something more heavy and industrial, but this intro is amazing. The piano and bass harmonizes well. Then the bell/keyboard sound comes in. I don't know what it is, but it mixes very well. I'm loving this so far. Nothing like what I expected, because I've only heard a few songs from NIN.

This beautiful female voice just came in speaking French. I'm hoping I got the right song....... Now the drums have come in along with another bass line. This is a beautiful song, I'm just not believing this is NIN. Now...synthesized trumpets? Most likely just a keyboard song.

2:47, it's still the same, but getting a bit louder. 3:45, it starts to fade out, and now it's just the piano, bass, and a faded out sound of the drums. The french voice came in shortly again. It's fading out completely now.

That was a great song. Only problem: I don't think that was the right song...:(

Yes - I am Waiting

Starts of with some guitar, and some keys, bass and soft drumming.
At 0;19 we start of with, a solo :amaze: , sounds like it though, it’s nice.
1:07 the intro again.
1:25 vocals come in, very relaxed, not to special, just pleasing to the ear.
After a few seconds we get some foreground/background vocals going on.
2:06 keyboards get a bigger part.
And after a few secs we return to where it al began with.
2:41 some heavier drumming and very nice guitaring going on.
3:30 the song changes a bit, all sounds different than before.
At 3:50 we’re back at the relaxing sound once more.
Some parts esp. with the vocals harmonies remind me of the Lion king soundtrack
5:14 some higher singing. Very much bass driven.
At a certain moment we get a solo with singing over it going on.
6:42 we fall back to relaxing music, again
And with that it ends.

Well, I’ve been meaning to check Yes out,
And I can say I wasn’t disappointed.
I liked it, although It sounded like the Lion king soundtrack at certain times

Arcturus - Masters Of Disguise 6:43

Intro : Weird electronic sounds, and then disoddant snyths come in, with the bass line. Vague background vocals, as the electrnoic sounds fade away. The synths become more "musical" Bg vocals continue.

0:46 - able to tell song is building up due to the "Wind effect"

0:50 - drums, distortion comes in. Clean vocals. Nice haunting effects. Very nice harmnozing of the vocals. Just haunting over here.

1:28 - song takes a different direction, giving a feel of a crowded street on a snowy Christmas night.

1:59 - Sounds like MDB cleans here, just less draggy. Nice piano lines at the back during vocals. Very classical influenced, and perhaps a little jazz/blues.

2:46 - i feel that the song is building up...but well..we'd see how it goes.

3:01 - Every stops and some electronic noise is produced. Not sure what, but this part is not musical, perhaps just to build the atmosphere.

3:30 - good way to enter into the song again, the vocals fade in very fast, and the clean vocals start again. soon, lead guitars come in.

4:06 - you can hear a scream, can't identify the gender, perhaps a female soprano, but i might be wrong.

4:12 - a nice instrumental break here. Clean electrics, and just a little jazzy stuff.

4:25 - the metal elemnts come in now, with the electric guitars and all.

4:34 - returns to "4:12"

4:44 - nice drum roll leads the song into a guitar solo. Very very fast, just shredding over here.

4:54 - a very high scream leads back to the cleans.

5:49 - song builds up, and goes into a very very strange structure. Song intensity change almost all the time, between say 5 secs. We have electronic stuff here, lead guitars here and there, some electronicized black metal screams.

song ends with lead guitars doing some legatos.

The song certianly can have more engery, but i think arcturus are trying to concentrate on the haunting factor. A great song, very complicated, i like the clean vocals alot.

Pantera - Cemetary Gates

I've heard some Pantera and never really was a fan, but we'll see how this goes.

[0:00]-[1:30]

It begins with a nice accoustic part, it has a very mellow sound. I really like it. The vocalist comes in, and I enjoy his voice, unlike the other Pantera I've heard. It continues like this for a while and an electric guitar comes in, and adds tension to the song. I am enjoying this so far.

[1:30]-[3:00]

The heavier side that I am more accustomed to shines through, with a nice riff laden with pinched harmonics, not overly quick, yet not slow, just enough to not completly change the song. It then goes back into the softer part and mesh's really well.

[3:00] - [4:24]

Returns to that same riff again, it adds nicely to the song. It then as expected returned to the softer part again. Towards the end electric gutiar come in. Goes into the chorus again, and yet once again not overly heavy, and I still enjoy his lyrics.

[4:24] - [4:48]

Again with the pinched harmonic riff, this is starting to get a bit repetative and annoying, but the other heavy part is still very enjoyable.

[4:48] - [5:45]

There is a palm muted chord progression into the solo, once again it meshed into the song very well. The guitar solo is not overly fast but very enjoyable. Wait theres the quick bit now :thumb: and its taking the heavy riff beneath the solo. and that riff continues.

[5:35] - [7:03]

:upset: That same pinched harmoinc riff. Followed by the heavy part I like. And some relatively high pitched vocals and guitar.

Very nice song overall. I loved the accoustic part of the song and the early part of the solo. I also really enjoyed the heavy chord part which depicted sort of what I was expecting however I thought it would be heavier, and the vocalist I was expecting much worse. The only let down was that pinch harmonic riff, it got old very quick.

All in all 9/10

Dragonforce - My Spirit Will Go On

Well for some reason, I clicked on something and my review was lost. So I'm going to make this fairly brief.

This song has a lot of melodics and teriffic singing. The beginning starts out with a nice mysterious intro. There is a huge part of the song where the keyboardist/guitarists rip some heartstopping solos. These guys do not hold back in this area of the song.

The fast and upbeat rythm of the song really gets your heart pounding. It's a really good song to get you excited. I really liked it.

9.5/10.

White Zombie - Thunder Kiss '65

A chuggy guitar note is repeated to open the song. Simple drums to go with the guitar. And some hard vocals with a thick souther accent by Rob Zombie. The guitar plays some alternate riffs every now and then.

Theres some lead guitar in the chorus part where he screams "WOW" in a really cheesy but cool hard rocking voice. The music is great to nod the head or tap the foot to.

At 1:28, it gets more of a blues sound, I guess its just the chord change. It goes quiet for a bit, with a sample. Then busts back into it with a scream and wah guitar solo.

Back to the verse with the southern sound dripping all over the place. Rob's voice sounds pretty much the same the whole time and gets a bit boring after a while. The music is pretty cool, simple but not uninspiring, once again, great to nod or foot tap to... it seems made for it.

The rest of the song is pretty much various riffs, some interspersed lead guitar, and Rob's voice getting more and more annoying, with "WOW" coming out every now and then.

Not a bad song, nothing really great though. I think it could get old quickly if I keep on listening to it right now, the beat keeping nature along with hard southern rock sounds is something that makes me smile though.. I don't know why, I usually go for more unusual stuff, but there's something in the simplicity of it that grabs me... yeah, right there.

Weddings Parties Anything - A Tale They Won't Believe

Starts off with some simple power chords. Sounds like punk. The singer comes in with a nice yell, and the song now sounds like a sea shanty. The singer is telling a story, with a couple guitar licks in the background and a basic bassline.

The chorus is all of the instruments picking up intensity. Very cool.

The pattern is a verse, then the chorus, then the verse again.

The song gets a much needed change, with a really cool sounding guitar solo. This is the best part of the song. I was waiting for a change, so it's good that one came.

This song is very strange, but I like it. It sounds to me like a good drinking song. I would have never thought to mix punk and a sea shanty. Interesting combo.

The marshall tucker band- southern women

i dont know what to think about this song. i like the guitar, its a soothing song. pretty slow song too.

they play the same guitar part throught the whole song, its almost a eric clapton style blues song. its a slower song, at first i wasent to excited to hear this song but the end it much better than the begining i think. i like long melodic solo's, and this does have a long solo. i dont know what instrument the first part of the solo is but then the guitar comes in, its not a fast solo, just a good melodic solo.

at the begining its a slow guitar then the vocal come in, as expected. the chorus is prett catchy, but not all that great. but it grows on you.

the solo is my favorite part in this song. its from 3:17 to about 6:30, so as you can see its a good long solo. as i said before its not a fast pace solo, more a melodic solo, as i said before,

at the end the verse and the chorus come back into play, that one catchy guitar riff thta this song has is great. they play it through out the song. i could really get into this song

as you can see this is a pretty long song at 7:55, almost 8 minutes, with almost a 3 minute solo, its really a quality song. not to much of a blues fan or this genre of music, but i like this one.

(this is my first review so give me some constructive critisism on my review, thx)

I think this will be some good listening, if it’s the same as atheist and the like.
My first encounter with this band.

Starts of with some metallica sounding guitar work, but!!!
But, at 0:11 double bass kicks come in, wow, that sounds great, really tight sound, I love the sound of his double bassing, some nice fills, and the guitaring is very nice,.
At 1:29 vocals come in, I don’t like them too much,.
But it’s not that bad.
The drumming is just insane. I like the drummers style.
2:38 a nice solo, very clean not realy DM like, but very nice nonetheless.
3:39 vocals enter once more, and after a few secs another guitar solo.
Sounds a bit DT like.
At 5:08 the vocals come in to tell the end of the story, he growls very clear in this part.

The end :p

The drumming was awesome, the vocals I wasn’t fan of, nice song tho

9/10

Burzum ? Die Liebe Nerpus?

Song starts off with a keyed instrument(Piano?) and a stringed instrument(possibly a lute) played using a synth/keyboard. The intro is very folksih in rhythm and melody, and sounds like it should be accompanied by tambourines and toms.
Around 30 secs a tambourine enters joined by a lead melody. The lead melody is, I think a horn, but all of the voices suffer somewhat from being played on a snyth/keyboard. The tambourine and Horn melody add to the already established folk feel of the song. Save for a few alterations in the keyboard line not much else goes on in this song.

The folk feel makes this song interesting but it would really improve from some variations and length (it falls in at 2:14). 5/10

Haggard - Per Aspera Ad Astra 6:40

Woah, intro got me started already. This is going to be great song.
Violin intro with and ochestraic percusion.

0:16 - the Metal elements come in, drums, guitars. Female Opera Vocals.

0:31 - growling comes in. Still very extremely classical at this point, while still metal as well.

1:05, the classic elements fade away, guitars take more control. Violins and whatnot are still behind, but the guitars are in the spotlight now.

Clean female vocals come in.

1:49 -growlings again.

2:02 - clean male vocals! with growling backing.

now it alternates with female vocals and growls.

2:50 - sounds a very power metal riff, but then it slows down again.

3:10 - sounds as if the song has finished. then a violin part comes out again.

3:36 - tambourines come in, and it sounds all folkish. Soon the distortions and growls enter again.

The entire song just goes between these.

Classical (emphasis on violins)
Well blended guitars with the classical elements
Female and male cleans, male growls.

And its enough to make the song majestic.

6:12 - Solo finally. Then it ends.

Great song, good blend between classical and metal. Very good blend. I've been trying to get haggard material, finally i got it. If you like nightwish, you'd like haggard.

Falconer - Mindtraveller

Begins with a cool guitar riff that is joined by drums then the rest of the band. It lacks energy. This is one instance where speed could help that. Lo and behold, the drums go into a double time beat and it feels much more energetic. I like the folksyness. The singer sounds cheesy but he has a good voice so it's alright.

I really like it when the drums do the double time feel. It makes the song feel... twice as fast. The mix is a little strange. I don't know why, it just doesn't sound quite right.

The song is quite repetitive. I wish they had taken more time to do interesting things, like a key change or meter change. The solo is cool but short. Pretty standard power metal fare as far as the solo is concerned.

The singer said "elven"

As far as I know, I like this general kind of music. Liked the previous Isis I have heard.
Isis - Hive Destruction - 5:37

Starts off sounding rather like horror film music, actually. Very wind-chimey, eerie sounding. That's all disturbed by some very nice, thick, dense riffing at about 0:35. Well, loved that the instant I heard it, so this is looking promising. Rest of the band isn't doing anything particularly interesting, but that's not to say they're bad.

Vocals come in, and they're okay. They're not great - they sound kinda weak actually - but I can live with them. The guitars repeat the cool riffage a bit, before moving into a slower, more melodic lead thing around 1:50. I like the drums now, slow, paced, dramatic. Not enough to make me love the song by themselves..but maybe the guitars are, so that might not matter.

I can see this being a rather short review, as I'm only thirty seconds from the end, and haven't yet written much. The song's basically switching between bouts of that forced-sounding vocalist, and that really cool guitar.

And it ends, with neither a bang nor a whimper. Just seems to end.

7.5/10 Not bad, but I'm undecided as to whether I'll keep it and/or listen to it again. Had some good stuff going for it though (namely, those guitars), but overall didn't have enough to just blow me away.

Jesu - Tired of Me

Someone mislabeled something somwhere but this is what was in the yousendit. It's 9:31 long.

Begins with a slow, dramatic guitar and some bass. Reminds me a lot of Sigur Ros. The vocals come in and they sound really nice. There's some effect on them I can't place but it sounds good. Not a whole lot is happening. It's chillout metal. This fits with Pelican under my genre of post-metal.

This will be very short as I am already 5 minutes into the song and have written very little.

The music almost feels like it should be played in a church. It just has that sound to it. THe drums take on a very different feel towards the end. More snare, almost like a march. Nicely done. I've never heard Godflesh, should I go looking?

Oops, yeah, that was Tired of Me. It was supposed to be Tired of Me, I'm just confused as to how it ended up labelled otherwise.

As for whether you should check out Godflesh..well, they're industrial pioneers, which may well be reason enough. Other than that, read around reviews for Jesu, and see what you think. Jesu is (Godflesh main-man) Justin Broadrick's first venture since Godflesh fell apart (painfully for him, apparently) in early 2002, and the contrast and parallels between the two are really cool; they're both really heavy, dense, etc, but Jesu is ultimately uplifting while Godflesh is ultimately negative and smothering. Makes for plenty of cool metaphors, if nothing else (mostly to do with Jesu being Broadrick's healing). I think the whole situation is great, but it makes everyone who reviews Jesu sound like a big hippy.

EDIT: Dibs.

I think I may have reviewed another song by these guys at some point, but I can't remember it well, so never mind.
Equilibrium - Die Prophezierung - 5:10

Starts off with somethign that sounds almost woodwindy. Good though; lively. Guitars come in good and heavy after a couple of repetitions, following the same basic pattern of the folky instruments at the start. Vocals come in pretty soon too, just a decent growl. Reminds me a bit of Martin Schirenc. Oh wait; short instrumental break, and then the vocalist comes back in, sounding little like Martin Schirenc; now sounds much deeper, and more 'foreign' (it sounds more obviously continental European).

A roar around 1:40, and the music carries on in this rather swift vein it's been in for a while - that woodwindy sound comes back. Another long roar signals the end of this instrumental section, and we get what I assume is another verse.

2:50 - this guy really likes his extended roaring screams. I'm not complaining though, he's quite good at them.

Now it suddenly sounds more obviously symphonic (as if this symphonic element has always been there, and is now just more pronounced). Around 3:20 we start having the introductory bit, punctuated by blasts of heavier guitar-driven music. Good stuff.

The rest of the song more or less carries on like that. Not to say it gets boring, but there's nothing more I can say about it without just repeating myself (even more). And it fades out swiftly at 5:10.

8/10. It was good.

**** Sparrer - Watch Your Back

This track is actually really good. Cool riff in the intro, i love his voice for some reason. When was this recorded? The Oi's! are pretty good, abit weak but pretty cool. The verse is very catchy, and the chorus is incredibly cool.

Solo : Nice punk solo here, nothing flashy in any way, but it still ****ing owns. All these bands seem to talk about is the government though, but these lyrics seem pretty well thought out.

'Well we dont wanna fight!'

A good track overall, definatly checking more of these dudes out. Now.

I had this song already, but previous to today I had not listened to it. I decided to give it a shot.

The intro is decent, nothing too special or overly catchy. After the intro the song picks up a little bit and the vocals come in, which I enjoyed. The first two minutes wasn't bad. At about 2:10, the song quiets down. I really enjoyed this part. Next comes the solo, which I also really enjoyed. Everything post-solo I enjoyed just as much as the first 2 minutes.

Definitely not a waste of my time, although I can't say it'll be a regular on my playlist. Just another In Flames song.

Evergrey - The Great Deceiver

As I mentioned above I tried to get this song but couldn't obtain it, however I found the song that they released and apparently the title track of the album 'Recreation Day' and I really enjoyed that song, so going into this song I have quite high hopes and through the first listen I wasn't disappointed.

[0:00] - The songs starts immediately with some very nice guitar work, a solo and some great tones. The bass plays relatively quick, singular notes underneath this which carries into the verse when the vocals enter.

[0:22] - The verse seems a bit dull like its lacking something, until the guitars to their little fill, this occurs twice. And then the intensity from the band increases and the vocalist gets a little higher... then it repeats this structure but instead of a build up there is a heavily distorted guitar playing an ... ahhh irregular rhythm I guess, with a keyboard over the top, I really like it.

[1:50] The chorus seems to be chanted, then there is a drum roll and it goes into the more intense version of the verse, so far I really like this.

[2:34] A similar feel to the irregular rhythm above, however this one is more abstract and there is strings above it. Then it returns to the normal one for two bars it sounds, then into the pumped up part of the verse again.

[3:35] Same riff/solo is played as the beginning into the solo which sounds awesome.

[4:18] After some awesome arpeggioes the song ends abruptly.

 AWESOME.

Possibly the best song I have been recommended so far in this Forced Listening, I really really enjoyed it. It has a bit of everything I guess, the only possible downside in the song is the bassist, I personally don't listen out for the bass, though if there is a complex bassline I can generally hear it...

Anyways easily a

Opeth - Drapery Falls
This review is gunna take a while, with a 11 min. song.
Opening with a short acoustic guitar riff, bringing in heavy, fast bass and drums, with high, slow guitar. It continues the same riff for a while, with many variations to all the instruments.

At 1:10, the riff changes, the keys are exactly the same though, very smooth transition. Now the guitar is taking the lead over the bass. This section is only 30 seconds long, then fades into an Acoustic, that same high, slow guitar, and eventually lyrics.

2:16, whispery, radio-quality lyrics come in over the same acoustic/elec. combo. He says 2 lines like that, then brings the rest of the band back in for not even 15 secs. Cool lil section right there though. The acoustic is still audible through everything.

They then repeat basically the same thing again. This time the band keeps going, and changes the riff yet again. The great drumming of Opeth shows through now, not overworking the set, yet the complexity sounds as if it is not made by a human. Very easy-sounding. And then there is a very good guitar solo starting at 4:33 and continuing until 5:02.

Here, the song really gets engaged. A much harder, darker sound now, with the signature Opeth growls. The kind of thing that i like (if you like it, check out the CD Blackwater Park).

At 6:07 or so, it switches gears again. Slower (by todays standards) doublebass keeping the beat, the guitarists using the higher end of the fretboard, whilst the bass stays low. Great combo here. the growling comes back over a whining wail of a guitar with one note held out for a lil longer then sounds possible. The drummer is now using a different time signature, going faster.

Ah, the crazy distortion to acoustic switch, this comes at 7:46. Opeth does this, i wanna know how they pull it off live. The singers voice here is great. The acoustics goes for about 20 sec., then switches back to dist. for a few riffs, with very fast and hard drumming to back it up. That repeats, then the opening riff comes back.

the opening riff continues for too long, it feels like it will never change. The drummer does end up adding double bass, but it still sounds too similar.

In my opinion, the song could have been cut much earlier, the lead out took WAY too long (almost 2 minuets).
8/10, 9 if it werent for being too long.

Across Five Aprils - Blue-Eyed Suicide

Never heard of these guys before... Never really listened to Chrisitan Metal before so I have no idea what to expect.

[0:00] - [0:08] - Starts Off with a really nice clean riff. The drums and a higher guitar then proceed to come in.

[0:08] - [0:19] - It then explodes into a heavier riff, that sounds pretty good, just the soft chord progression above played with distortion.

[0:20]-[0:30] - Then into the verse. The singer has a voice the reminds me very much of the hardcore/punk genre.

[0:30] - [0:50] - The verse intensifies here, the Singer screams instead of singing clean, it sounds ok, but just a little bit weak, imo like all hardcore singers. The drums have a pretty quick double kick going underneath, with guitars strumming chords pretty quickly, however they are not overly deep.

[0:50]-[0:52] Nice little drum roll to lead into the next part of the song, and anacrusis I believe it is called although I'm not to sure on the spelling ;)

[0:52]-[1:25] Pretty heavy part with relatively slow chords, the singer has a deeper scream here Then it slows down again, much slower, then it slows again.

[1:25]-[1:37] This part is used to bring the song back up to speed I think.

[1:37]-[2:05] The chorus is here, and the singer has to me a pretty annoying clean voice its high, but not like Maynard quality, its sounds... nasaly? Something just doesn't seem right about it. The lyrics also aren't overly complex.

[2:05]-[2:22] - Nice little clean instumental section sounds pretty good. Not overly complex but sounds alright.

[2:22]-[2:53] - the above is interupted by the vocalist screaming and distorted guitars. Pretty much the same as the above verse without the double kick.

[2:53]-[2:56] - NIce little guitar fill with band stabs following and another anacrusis but this time the singer into the chorus.

[2:56]-[3:30] - Pretty standard chorus except the end, it has a drum fill and the guitars fade out.. the song sounds to have finished... except it doesn't.

[3:30]-[4:15] The drums start this little extra bit at the end with the bass drum pounding out the rhythm. The guitars then copy this though they have a tremelo picked note that sounds out of key and imo sounds terrible. There is a fill that sounds pretty random, the drums keep the beat but the guitarist's just go nuts and hit notes on random beats etc. The singer then comes in and starts screaming. The same structure at the start of these little bit is kept throughout but now the chords on the drums pulses are higher... The song closes with the drums keeping the same rhythm and the guitars palm muting a low chord in time with drums.

I didn't really enjoy this that much really. They seem to sound more hardcore than metal to me, and I really didn't enjoy the singers voice. All the instruments seemed alright, not overly skilled, except the bassist I didn't really here one if there is one.

The song didn't need that extra part at the end, and would have sounded much better if it had of ended at [3:30]

Bah, not one of my fav. APC Songs, but oh well

Starts with a cool, clean, calm riff. Too much bass comes in with drums, kind of ruining the calming effect of the song.
Vocals join very quickly, his voice is awesome as always.
Chorus at about 55 (im guessign) seconds, the riff is still exactly the same on bass, similar on guitar. begining to get annoying.
back to the verse, same thing AGAIN
back to the chorus, exactly the same STILL
At 2:52, i hoped it would get harder, it doesnt. But the riff finally changes, to something equal as simple as APC goes.

That was the worst review ive ever had to do

So you listen to some of their worst work (excluding the Package).

12 Stones - Lifeless

Your YSI was no good. A corrupted mp3. Good work douchebag.

Begins with a catchy sub-par metalcoreish riff. A little too slow and the drums are unimpressive but decent. Quickly into the pop-metal verse with a slightly raspy whiny singer. They do the classic build up through the pre-chorus to lead you into the chorus. I'm not sure, but the guitar riff doesn't seem to have changed, only the effects on it.

There is a cool phaser-fied little bridge then back to verse-prechorus-chorus. I dislike how predictable all the melodies are. Nothing interesting to jump out. None of the instruments are jumping out. I enjoy it for the most part except for the singers voice.

Christ. This is a guitar solo? It's a poorly done blues solo with distortion. The timing is bad and the phrasing miserable. Why can't nu/pop metal solos be like the one in that Evanescence song I like. Going Under I think? at least that guy pretends to know his way around a guitar.

The outro has a croaky sort of growl. Reminds me of Dani Filth. It does however grab my attention. I wish it didn't suck but it was the most interesting part of the song.

2/10 points are only from the fact that this song would make decent background music in an action movie.

Neurosis - Burn

Guitar, feedback and drums are the starting contenders. It's faster than I expected, still not too fast. There's that sparse post-rock guitar style I would have thought to be there, its clean too. The vocalist comes in and has a strange dying groan, sings a few lines with the guitar and drums. When he stops, the guitar does some distorded riffs with a few slides.

At 2:14 it becomes rather heavy, with some Mogwai like wall of noise, then at 2:26 it gets even heavier. Then drops off to a very soft ambient section with only 2 chords. The singer now talks with some echo that sounds really strange and interesting. It goes on for a while, a nice thing to do when ambience is involved.

The last vocal line of the section is yelled and then it busts back into the heaviness of before. Simple tremolo picked lead guitar and a low power chord line are the most noticeable here. The guitars interplay a bit, harmonizing on some high notes.

By 6:30 it's all dropped away except for some keyboard doing a few chord changes, which then fades out too. Theres 7 mins of music, and not that much to say about it.

Hey, not bad. Faster than the Isis song I FL'd not long ago, but rather similar everywhere else. The music was good, and I like how it went pretty calm in the middle. The vocalist was a bit strange to listen to, like Tom Waits meets Layne Staley, I guess I could get used to it though, especially when it comes along with a type of music that I seem to like so far.

Wumpscut – Black Death (French Concept)
Time: 5.48

Starts out with some atmospheric sounds, plus a bit of spoken French. Then the intro begins in earnest with an infectious bass beat, followed by rapidly loudening riff, with a whispered “make my body burn”.

The riff gains distortion and momentum, with drums adding in effect. An interesting note is that the tempo of the guitar is at least four times as fast as the drums, which I thought added nicely to the song.

A return to the female vocalist, again speaking in French. A rehash of the first part follows, and this general pattern is repeated once more. Then the riff changes, to a more frenzied one, also signalled by a change in drumming and bass beat. No real solo, only a new riff and some intuitive drumming, but I was still enjoyed this song as a whole. The singer produces some new lyrics, as well as showing credible voice control later on, which I felt was necessary, as it began to grow stagnant after a while.

On the whole, I liked this song, even in light of it’s sometimes annoying repeats. I would like to listen to some more Wumpscut, in the future. I give it 8/10.

My picks:

The Doors – 20th Century Fox (Classic Rock)
AC/DC – Shoot To Thrill (Classic Hard Rock)
The Wildhearts – Return To Zero (Popular Rock with some Metal influences)
Emperor – Thus Spake The Nightspirit (Atmospheric Black Metal)
Scorpions – Speedy’s Coming (Classic Metal)

Emperor - Thus Spake the Nightspirit (Atmospheric Black Metal)

The song opens with a very evil feel. Evil Guitaring, evil bass, evil synths and reasonably evil drums. Not much going on here. Overall a very evil feel with just a dash of foreboding.
Around the 15 second mark a gutteral screm saunters its way across my speakers and this is joined by a steady drum part, which drives the whole song forward. The evil feel remains and at around 50 seconds vocals, scramed in your usual Black metal way, join and give the song a subject.
Ever since the drums settled into a steady the beat the song has been very fast and heavy. It's good.
1:20 and we branch off into a new section with some great riffage by the rhythm guitar and some good lead work by the, believe it or not, lead guitar.
The synth is pretty overpowering after this, and is borderline cheesy.
The riffs vary but all stay within a very similar style, so the song gets a bit repetitive.
3:00 and we again head off in a new direction. A different style of riff here along with a half time feel show the atmospheric part of this song.
The combination of the guitar work and snyth here is marvellous, I'm really liking this.
About 4:00ish overdubbed clean vocals come in and the song end.

I'm not a massive Black Metal fan, but alot of the Emporer stuff that I've heard has been good. This song is no exception.
The majority of the song is repetitive but the atmospheric section at the end is really great. 8/10 overall.

Wes Montgomery - Airegin

I like jazz.

Begins with some cool quick little guitar bursts. Everything is moving pretty fast. The drummer is swishing away in the back. The bass is also cooking. The piano is basically the only thing not moving fast. I really like the guitar tone. sounds like live lounge jazz.

I dig.

The guitarist has a bunch of dead notes floating around. He is good but those dead notes make him less good. He is really the reason this music is hear. That bassist just keeps going though.

There is a lot of really cool interplay between the guitar and bass and the piano too once in a while.

The piano "solo" is pretty cool. The guitar goes away and the piano takes over. Now he is moving pretty quickly. The part does some really cool stuff. Then a sort of bass solo where everything else gets quiet but the bass part doesn't really change. The guitar and piano are doing quick little diddles in the background. Then drum solo fills brea up the music. It's really cool. I like how it cuts in then the music just starts right up again.

The ending is tight. just one of those quick fall down sort of things.

9/10 I liked it a lot.

I liked the last Neurosis song i heard, i hope this will be the same

Starts with a synth, underwater-y type sound. Brings in an Opeth-style acoustic, with a very good, soothing riff. The ambiance remains behind it, adding to the soothing-ness.
At 1:05, bass and singing enters. The vocals are a little raspy, as if someone has been screaming/crying. Kinda spooky, very soothing still. he says a few lines, whilst the guitar riff continues, with the ambiance, and the bass playing a pretty low note softly in the background.

Then, at 1:46, another voice comes in, an octave (?) higher. The high vocals sound like they were run through a distortion pedal with only a slight amount of gain.

2:20 or so, drums come in. Very slow tom hits, maybe on beat one of every measure, with a quarter-tripelet eighth ride pattern. Also, strings acompany the whole piece. Very very very soothingly good. Very much so reminds me of Opeth except the lyrics

3:25, we go back to the first lyrics part. the "verse" i guess. Then the "chorus", with the piano, then the drums pattern again.

At 4:17, it starts to transform to metal. Some one hits a distortion switch, which sounds like it will take over and morph the song. But, then, we get taken aback with a piano fill, with no acc. Then a screetching feedback on guitar, and METAL

4:56, the metal half of the song begins. With a full, normal band. Playing a very Opeth-like riff. Strings come in after abotu 30-45 secs. then a scream, his voice is very good with the higher pitched growls. Cant really understand him though. Periodically, a higher, harmonic guitar jumps in. Very cool sound when it does. makes it sound much "smoother"

At 6:50, it changes yet again, slow down some. the bass seems to be too great here, its taking over my headphones. Almost blocking out the guitars, but not quite. probobly a problem on my end. hmph.

That is the way the song ends. Snice it was so long, i will do a three part overall rating. The first half, the second half, and the song as a whole
First Half: 11/10 it was just that great
Second: 7/10 not enough variety in the riffage
Together: 9/10 Enough variety that it was a very entertaining review.

Can you guys review my review, jsut to let me know how i did? that would be greatly appreciated.

Shadows Fall - Idle Hands

Begins with a fast metalcore riff. Pretty simple, but cool. This could turn out to be decent metalcore. Oooohhh, not expecting those vocals. I don't like the yelling ones but the growls are half-way decent. The guitars are doing some cool stuff.

Dammit, into a classic metalcore section. The singer is trying to sing and he sucks at it. At least he's lower in the mix than the guitar.

There is a bunch of repetition before we get to the type of metalcore riff I really love. THe pinch harmonics that jump out. You all know what I'm talking about. Then a solo! It's decent. Not amazing but does some cool stuff.

All in all this song is pretty good. I can imagine checking this band out further. Not at the top of my list by any means, but decent. This gives metalcore a good name.

maudlin Of The Well - The Ocean, The Kingdom, And The Temptation

Heard a few songs by this band and Kayo Dot before, I know they're pretty interesting, though sometimes a bit extreme for my liking. Hey kids, let us go on a journey to find out what this song does to our heads.

It opens with some oriental sounding clean guitar with a few tons of echo added, but it goes away quickly. Replaced with some bass, soft drums, soft guitar, and someone talking, no idea what he is saying, it's muffled. The chord progressions are definitely strange. It's sort of fast, yet soft, but extremely tense, it feels like it could get really heavy, really quickly.

A slight speed up for the "chorus" at 1:50. After that is the main idea is back, but guitar is improvising, it has a watery feeling about it. Another speed up at 2:30, then a calmer bit, but only for a second.

There it is, a chungy distorded bass and guitar riff, some distant reverbed growls, the drums are constant, a bit louder than the rest of it though, which seems strange. At 3:50, the reverb is removed from the growls and they are now more audible. It seems rather strange, quite hard to listen to.

It flows back to the first main idea for a bit, heavies up with some screamy vocals. A small solo, then it backs well off. At 5:30 there is a new section, clean guitar picking with some high notes dropping off all the time. The constant drum beat is still there, and the tension that comes with it. The clean picking contiues and someone is reading poetry, maybe. This has been the most listener friendly bit so far.

6:50 It's heavy once again, and theres some random soloing with delay which straight away reminds me of the intro music to Monkey Magic when they talk about the Earth being formed.

8:10 is another new section, which is very ambient, the drums have finally stopped that constant beat, it actually feels peaceful now. There's some very light percussion, strange guitar noises, high pitched bells, and the keyboard ambience base. And with 2 loud bell notes, it ends.

Oww, very unusual, and I don't really know what to think of the final product. My first reaction is that it's too hard to listen to, it will take time to get into something like this. Some bits weren't too difficult, and it was good to have them in there. The heavy bit's weren't too extreme for me in this song, so that's a plus too.

It's too much to handle at thist time, I couldn't enjoy it.. so maybe 6.8/10 for now, but increasing with time.

Oh hey, an Aussie band. Yeah!

Well, this is actually my first introduction to trip-hop. I must say I was pleasantly impressed, as you will find out later.

Well, here we go...

Fagan - Dante (5:12)

The song starts with some rumbling, and then has a solo female vocalist entering at about 20 secs in. Very haunting and slow singing. Swells of sound can be heard from time to time, samples of orchestras and such.

The song starts in earnest with a piano entering at around 1 min in, and a heavy bass beat at 1.30. I really like this so far. More of this continues till about 2.10, when a new singer enters amidst a new swell of noise. He soon dominates the female vocalist, and she fades out. Although I couldn't make out the lyrics, they sounded like a mix between Maynard and Bob Marley for some strange reason.

At 3.30, the song takes a change, in favour of a new atmosphere, a very mild distortion on the male vocalist, and a few more lines from the female singer. The song begins to end at around 4.50, with each part fading out, first the bass, then the drums, then finally the singing and the background samples. The piano continues for a short while, before fading out also.

Wow. This song is great. I really like this genre, perhaps not as much as my beloved R&M/metal, but perhaps equal to Trance/House.

I'm giving it 7.5/10.

I've always been on and off when it ocmes to AC/DC. I Like them, I dig all thier singles and stuff I've heard off the radio, but never developed enough interest to go out and buy an album of thiers. With that said, so begins my review:

The song kicks in with an opening guitar riff. Yup, this is definetly AC/DC. I was half expecting You Shook Me All Night Long to start (Don't ask me why )
. AC/DC always has the coolest intros. :)

Anyway, the verse kicks in, and so does Brian Johnson. The song has a very nice rythym, the drums and bass blend in nicely with the guitars. I'm also liking this lyrics. I've noticed the lyrics have as much attitude as Johnson's voice, and that's a good thing. Chorus kicks in, and it's your basic AC/DC chorus, everything gets louder and faster. Very catchy. We get to another verse, it's moving along smoothly. Hit with another chorus. Usual AC/DC fare.

3:23. Breakdown time. Only a guitar and Drums are present, building up to something good :D . Here comes Johnson, screaming a lyric over and over again. Uh oh. Solo time. Nice AC/DC solo. Everything's going just as expected. And here comes the fade out.

Good little ditty. Enough to make me go out and buy an album? Maybe. Sounded just as I expected it to sound. Which is good. I'm starting to really warm up to them.

7.5/10

P.S. Is this on the Back In Black Album?

Beck - The golden age

I dont know how good this will be. Im not soo much of fan of this type of music

Comes in with Guitar. Doing a pretty simple sounding pattern. bass slides in (literally) and it is kinda cheesy. drums follow that. theres also some wierd keyboard type sound.

Lyrics at 48 sec. same riff, no keyboard though. bah, im already sick of this song.

1:34, getting bored now, waiting for the Bela Fleck that follows on my playlist.

1:50 or so, a type of chorus, same instruments, just different, annoying, off key-ish vocals.

Still bored. starting to wonder if anything is going to happen.

3:15, another "chorus" an electric guitar has also joined with random strums of the same chord

Sorry for the crappy reveiw. Not my kidna song, and its been a bad day.

Anacrusis - Paint a Picture.

Starts out with some guitar riffage and some bass. The drums and singing come in soon, not bad, but I don't like the "clean" vocals he's trying to pull off. The guitar in this song is average thrash riffing, not that brilliant. The drums are about the same, average. You can hear the bass well though, which is nice.

I don't really like the singer's voice, it doesn't seem to have much emotion in it, but that's just what I'm hearing right now. An interlude comes with about 3:30 left in the song. The song gets a bit better after this, but I still don't like the non-screamed vocals.

Not a bad song, but also not very memorable or great. 6/10

Limbonic Art - The Dark Paranormal Calling

It has been a few years since i heard this band, i didnt really like them at the time, but my tastes have changed greatly since then, so it is time to give Limbonic Art another try. So here goes.

It starts off with an ambient of sorts intro but that doesnt last long and goes into a blast beat. The vocals and other instruments come in quickly, and i can see how people can relate this to emperor, especially latter era emperor, really reminds me of something from prometheus, and the vocals sound a bit like Ihsahn at times too.

The blast beat stops for what im assuming is the chorus, but still continues quite fast double basswise, however what might keep it from being a chorus is the fact that its only like 1 line long, and then the blastbeat comes back in.

After that the song breaks down a little bit, but it sounds good and has a lot of atmosphere into it.

After a few vocal lines the drumming slows down even more, but not for long, the double bass comes back in quickly.

Some little bridge thing follows shortly thereafter, which while it isnt great, it fits the song well, and then more vocals follow, as was expected. And here we find a return to the verse afterwards.

It breaks down again after the verse, and there are a few cool little subtle drumming things thrown in here that are kinda hard to hear but are really excellent. A similarly speeded part comes right after this for about 2 lines and has almost a symphonic feel to it, but not in the lame way bands like dimmu borgir do it. This is broken up with bridges between ever few lines, but continues for a while.

The song pauses for a second for a quick drum fill, then the rest of the instruments continue, and we hear a note on the guitar that sounds like a solo is going to start, but no solo is present. After a few more measures that symphonic part comes back in.

Once again there is a quick pause for a drum fill, and the same part continues on.
This is followed by another, and judging by the time left in the song, probably final verse.

Yep, that is the end.

Overall id give it a 7.5/10, the song is pretty good, not amazing, but the drummer is top notch, and the tasteful use of symphonics in the song work well with the band, and i will have to check out more of their stuff.

Reccomendations are as follows:

(I was looking at some of their songs and they have Nazgul march and stuff, sounds cool)
I've got half of In Hollow Halls Beneath The Fells, and previewed it.

I actually like it, you'll have to excuse my review though, I'm not too good with music theory, and can't accurately tell an ocatve apart, for example.

But I'll start my review based off the half I have heard:

[0:00 - 0:31] It starts off with the drums playing a marching beat with a slight melodic riff coming from guitars. (Reminds me of the march on Helmsdeep, it's kinda deep and atmospheric).

[0:32 - 1:03] The drums and guitar(s?) keep playing their same parts and a piano comes in playing a nice soft riff that slowly progresses higher in pitch until the singer comes in at 1:04.

[1:04 - 1:36] The drums and the singer are the only two instruments here (There could be guitar in the background, really quiet? It's 12:00am here so I have the volume a bit low) the singer has a harsh roar-like sound to his voice, it's pretty good, and suits the music perfectly, I'm guessing their German? (In my opinion the voclist sounds like Dimmu Borgir's For All Tid, well a little less harsh, and better quality).

[1:37 - 2:07] The drums, the guitar(s?) and the paino all play here, it's alot 'heavier' (Being louder) then anything yet, so it's almost as if the song is creeping up, the drums have a sort of drum rush.

[2:08 - 2:38] The drumming slows down and the focal point is on the singer, he has some really cool echoes on his voice here, it's kinda creepy (Maybe that's just listenning to this song at 12:00am in pitch black!)

[2:39 - 3:11] The song is sort of building up here, the guitars are becoming louder, over the top almost, it seems like a build up to climax.

[3:12 - 3:45] It's really cool here, no drums just a sort of grand organ plays a progressive melodic piece.

[3:45 - 4:11] Sounds like an accoustic guitar (Well electric guitar with no effects) plays a progression at the 4:12 point a guy (Sounding like Gandalf!) says "In The Darkness, Bind Them".

[4:12 - 4:48] All instruments come back together at once with a really cool sounding mix the singer comes back in almost sounding like he's chanting, there's some pretty heavy sounding distortion on the guitar (Well one of them) that I like, it's subtle, but very effective, there's a melodic organ playing a heaps 'Pagan' sounding piece. (I think it sounds like something from a Pagan era marketplace).

[4:49 - 5:20] The guy chanting "In The Darkness, Bind Them" comes back and repeats his line 4 times and the melodic organ stops.

[5:21 - 5:51] The guitar(s?) are playing with the drums the same progression, at about 5:49 the drums start to speed up a bit and the singer comes in again.

[5:52 - 6:23] The singer, drummer and guitar(s?) are all coming across, once again the singer has a cool echo sound to his voice.

[6:24 - 6:55] The guitar(s?), drums and organ have their little instrumental part playing their progression once again.

[6:56 - 7:28] The distrotion coms in again, but this time it's heavier, the singer also comes across but with a more brutal sound to his roar.

[7:29 - 7:41] The organ and drums are playing their progression. And then the guy comes in with "In The Darkness, Bind Them" once again.

[7:42 - 8:17] The singer comes in, once again with everything backing him, the distortion guitar is there, but it's not so loud anymore.

[8:18 - End] The guy comes back and chants "In The Darkness, Bind Them" 4 times and then at 8:41 the music all stops, but he chants one more time, and the song finishes.

Rating: 7.5/10
It was a really good song, I thought it was maybe a bit too long though.
I liked the singer's voice, especially with the echoes.
I will give props to the band though, especially their drummer, very talented and I will definately keep an eye out for them in the future.

Edit: I'm sorry if I haven't done this song justice.

Psycroptic - Cruelty Incarnate

I've been hearing the name Psycroptic for ages, but never had a listen to them.

Technical Death it is, the guitar riff to open is rather bouncy and it covers a few octaves, incorporating lead and chunky chords quite well. The drums are doing fast double kick underneath it. The drums stop after 3 bars or so. Then the vocalist starts growling something about something. The double kick drum speed varies over the bars.

I'm liking the guitar work a fair bit, it reminds me quite a bit of Atheist, which is a great thing. Drums and vocals are the only other things that I'm noticing, and they don't excite me. Not saying they are badly played, just hard to take much notice of without them blending in together as a single unit of sound.

The tempo changes slightly over the song too, some vocal screams, but most are growled, and I don't think they could be understood without reading the lyrics. Actually, the music in general is kind of progressive, I don't hear many riffs more than once. And essentially it's 5:26 of this.

In the end, the guitar was the only thing that I really liked, it was done tremendously well, no real solo's, but some intense riffage in the vein of Atheist. I also think there was only one guitarist.. maybe that is being generous, but I don't think it ever sounded like 2 guitars.

I never heard any bass guitar, or anything that stood out at least. I could try with headphones... some other time. Drums were played well, but I got no enjoyment from listening only to them. I guess the same goes for the vocals, I like to know what's being said without having to read along with it.

The guitar surpassed all expectations I had prior to listening, but the music on a whole fell short. 7/10

I have a feeling this does not belong in an R&M FL but I'll try it anyway.

Begins with a mellow note, fluttery thing. Then spoken word and a simple drum beat. All very, very chilled out. I should smoke to this. It does some cool chaning stuff, adding and subtracting parts. Almost as the the entire song were played all the way through by every instrument and in some spots they were just muted.

It is repetitive, but not very boring. It also doesn't demand change like some songs. It has plenty for what it is. I like it a lot, although it would never really get my juices flowing. There isn't a ton to say about it.

I really liked the trumpet in the background near the end. It was a nice touch. Good song. but only a

Hollenthon - Vestige (Non Omnis Moriar)

I've heard some Hollenthon before, and I like it.

Semi-fast tribal drumming, heavy on the toms, theres some other deep percussion's in there too, Taiko drums.. maybe more. Feedback and random slide distorted guitar.

It gallops along with a chunky melodic riff. A guy singing (or a sample of one) something I can't decipher, it's probably not English. Then there's a little lead guitar, sort of a mix of Viking Metal and Western.. interesting.

At 1:10, the snare drum is discovered, and the beat goes more standard like. The growly vocalist is here now, I can't understand him either. The music drifts in and out of the blues genre with various riffs, but for the most part here it's slightly thrashy viking-western metal.

At 3:30 it changes right back to the tribal drums and the bass is the only other thing playing. Guitar fades back in and riffs around, then does a slightly-solo bit. Some guitar harmonizing too, which has featured a couple of times already.

Basically it goes back to the same bits fairly often, the singing, the lead guitar line.. yeah.

After 6:00, there's some more tribal drumming, and the rhythm guitar gallops along on the one chord, some other random guitar slides hang around in the background, and then it stops.. It's over.

The combinations of music were interesting when you figured out what each influence was, and they fit together rather well. However at 7:18 long with not that many musical ideas, it got a bit tedious. It's mostly good, but I wouldn't rate this song as high as Homage.
This is about 8/10.

Its been a while, but here it is. Temporary Peace. And this is anathema.

Starts with some ocean noise, with clean guitar playing a 6 note riff. Nice and slow, then a nice vocal begins. The track is a lil choppy, i dunno why, could by the song, or my comp or the reencoding. meh whatever.

At like 1:23 or so, drums and bass enter. The bass here is very cool, its not following anything, just playing its own part. The voice comes back, its very much like some of the APC songs i like. There is an acoustic (?) scrape in the background as well. Then a female voice enters, then do some overlaying. Its very tranquil.

Chorus begins, it makes me want to find the lyrics and understand them. But not now. the music is very ambient, very good rock.

And thats pretty much the whole song. ill give it an 8, out of 10.

My Dying Bride - A Kiss to Remember

Well, I have heard of this band, but I have never actually listened to them. I am not the biggest fan of Metal, but I will try to rate the song fairly.

The song opens up with a bass lines; effects are noticeable. Two guitars, and the drums enter very quickly. Distortion rules each of the notes, except for the lead lines, which do not seem to spectacular. The singer enters. He has a very deep voice, not very appealing to me. The drummer is working the pedal a little too much if you ask me. A bit over the top.

A violin (could be viola) enters, it is merely playing in the background (yet in a lead fashion), while the drummer whacks the toms and the rhythm guitarist plays chords. The singer enters once again, and the drummer has lightened up, but still doesn’t seem to fit that well. However, he does performs some nice fills.

The lyrics do not particularly stand out to me, but I haven’t been paying complete attention to the. The group now seems to be entering some kind of bridge. The tempo has slowed down, and the lead guitarist’s lead lines are much more interesting than they once were. A piano enters (or seems more noticeable) and seems to conclude the track, but then the band enters once again, finishes the song.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Concrete Jungle

I've heard a bit of Marley and didn't like it.

Begins with a bass drum and some quiet guitars in the back. Oh and a hammond organ. The mix is strange. The bass side is too loud. Maybe that's just the compression on this file. The annoying reggae off beat thing starts. Then the singer (Marley I'm guessing) comes in. THe hammond organ is just sort of floating around. This stupid off beat crap is starting to really get to me.

I don't understand why this stuff is regarded so highly. It is getting very, very boring. There is a guitar solo that is alright I suppose. It sounds like it was recorded really ludly but that doesn't fit because everything else is so mellow. The chord progression is cool when I listen to it closely but the rhythm is just so annoying. And then a fade out. That is lame.

I don't like this song and still don't like reggae or Marley.

Slumber - Rapture

Opens with with some cool drum work (I want a tab for it ;) ), and then the vocals enter and I'm slightly put off. I don't like them too much, but they are kind of low key and don't over-shadow the rest of the song which makes up for it. It moves slowly until a bridge comes while a quiet guitar and a steady drum beat holds the song up until a guitar solo starts. After the solo you hear something like when the vocals entered. At around 3:20 the song is carried by a simple guitar riff and some nice symphonic sounds in the background. Everything starts to slowly gather and pick up towards the end as some nice singing joins the song.

I was a little put-off in the begining, but as I listened it got better and better. I liked the song, it was a good listen, but I don't find myself wanting to listen to more of it. It was just missing something that I kept wanting to hear that I can't point out, and without that something I'll give it a

My experience of Satch is limited, so I only have a vague idea what to expect.
Joe Satriani - Big Bad Moon - 5:15

Starts off with some spacey-sounding guitar; nothing impressive, nothing meant to be. Reminds me very much of some Spastic Ink intros on Ink Compatible, actually. Anyway, it soon resolves itself, after a drum roll intro, into a pretty great rock riff. I like this so far.

Vocals come in; nothing special at the moment, but they're not bad. It's got something resembling character, which is a good thing. Satriani (I'd assume, anyway) goes off into a rather fast solo just before the minute. It seems similar in style to the kind of thing that would normally annoy me for being over the top, but it's handled really well, as in, it still seems part of the song.

We go back to that really nice riff, and those vocals, for another verse before there's another solo guitar section. It seems to be kind of building out of the riff, rather than just being created from nowhere, and since I like the riff anyway, that can only be a good thing.

And then we have the same thing again to finish off the song, except that the vocals carry on (kind of) over the top of the solo parts. So nothing much to add there.

9/10. I really enjoyed it.

Farmakon - Loosely of Amoebas

K, here we go:
Starts with a fast, but fairly standard riff followed by a quick entry of the vocalist. Low in the mix, but decent overall. Stabbed power chords follow, but nothing special.

Here we go now, the clean vocals enter, and it reminds me of Opeth's Orchid album, he's a very good clean singer, which is surprising.

Now we have a weird, almost funk like section, with a bouncy bass line and a cool little guitar riff.

This is followed by another heavy section, very similar to the first. Catchy riff, but getting a little repetitive.

A fake out with a clean vocal, heavy power chords and a little strange interlude between the two of them.

Guitar solo, expertly done; not too flashy or too long to lose interest in it. More clean singing, all well done and a quick ending.

Overall, while the death metal sections weren't anything special, the combination of the different styles warrants a listen. 8.5/10

Starts out fast with the guitar, building in up energy. Drums come pounding in. Slows down going into the first riff. Singer comes in.

Guitar fades out for a second, lets me hear the percussion better. Returns to the first guitar part. The riffs that follow sound simple, yet very enjoyable similar to the begining riffs but changed in a few parts.

Builds energy like in the begining, then wam everything drops into a new riff and then changes into a slow reggae-like beat. Singers voice is clearer now. Very nice voice.

Guitar solo is alright, a bit weak sound wise. Goes back to the climbing guitar part in the begining.

Very good song. I especially like the ups and downs of the song. The transistions are suprising and caught my attention.

The song opens up with a rather funky beat, and a nicely done lead by the bass. There seems to be no real intro; the song gets things going right from the beginning. The bass player’s playing and tone seems a bit messy (If that makes sense), but I believe it is technically nicely done. I think I here some slap, pop, and various other techniques. I’m not a bass player, so I may be wrong on some of the terms.

Around fifty-five seconds, the bass has really gotten better sound wise; I’m guessing he is slapping. The drumming is also quite well done. The drummer doesn’t seem to be trying to show off, but he keeps a nice steady beat and plays few fills on (what I seems to be) a high-hat and china crash.

Very short song (One minute and forty-six seconds), but I am satisfied. It sounds a little bit like Primus, especially when the bass starts to pick up. I though it was pretty good.
