Alabama Thunder Pussy - Bear Baiting
I guess the Southern influences are in there a little bit vocally, but I barely noticed it, what I did notice was all the other aspects of the music. Bass, guitar, drums, all very good. The vocals were definitely the worst part of the music to me, but they weren't bad, except by comparison. Intro starts with a neat riff and starts the song off fun before going into the verse.
A rather long song, not quite enough in there to break it up and keep it fresh all the time. I have a short attention span, so it seemed to drag a bit in places. Overall though, had it been a little shorter it would have been solid throughout imo. Lead guitar had some fun parts, and some parts where it was pretty non-existent, as would be expected, but I still wish there had been more lead work. Outro was very draggy...30 seconds of feedback...gets boring. Would have been neat to go from the slow breakdown back into a speedy section before ending, but oh well.
8/10 I will probably look into some more stuff by them.

The Refreshments - Mekong
Never heard of these guys before.
This song begins with a cool ska sounding guitar riff but the chord progression is better than what I expected.
Then there are the drums which also sound good and a cool lead guitar part. The singer comes in with that slightly punk sneer, nasal voice but it's really thin in that aspect and he hits all the right notes. I like the voice much better than the average punk voice.
The lyrics sound good too. Nothing too deep but good. The guitar solo thing comes back but later there is a very very cool solo that sounds very classic rock-ish. Only problem - It's too short.
This band is tight. No little mishaps or poor choices musically, just straight up goodness. It's also very easy to listen to.

Rwake - Forge
Starts with a neat sound byte, and quickly rushes into the song proper. I loved the sound byte, very comical, and flows nicely into the song. Simple chord riff to begin, but guitars add in harmony. Vocals I found to be a little comical. They work well though, the guy screaming in the background was distracting at first, but added layers once I was used to it.
I will admit, I had no idea what to expect coming into it, having never heard any doom before. I was not disappointed by it, good lead guitar work in the song, nice riffs. Not necessarily solos, but it all fit well in context, and harmonizes well with the band as a whole. Drums were relatively simple for metal, but, it fit well enough, so no complaints. Interesting outro with work on intervals, sounds very neat, and then completes the sound clip in ending, very cool. It had to grow on me, but once it did I liked it. I was originally thinking 7, but by the end, this would be either an 8 or 9 most definitely, but I'll go with 8, because it still could improve vocally at the least, but no problems with variety for sure.

MeWithoutYou - Torches Together
Never heard them
Begins with some feedback and what sounds like a radio in the back. The drums and another guitar with a real riff. Pretty cool.
There's a drum beat that you think is going to lead into a heavier section but goes back and the vocals join. They're kind of funny sounding. He's sort of yelling sort of singing. Preaching I suppose. This same thing goes on with thebeat that you think is going to make the song explode but doesn't All the parts are very cool I must say.
Then the beat comes back and it does explode. It's very melodic. The lyrics seem kind of pseudo intelligent. These guys remind me of ATD-I but are definitely different.
The song just sort of ends. It seems to have two very distinct sections. It was good but not amazing.

Naglfar - Brimstone Gate
This, I like. Catchy and grabby intro. Fantastic musically, and vocals that I have become adapted to. Strikes me as similar to Dimmu Borgir, as I expected. Driving double bass and nice guitar riffs, this song has it all for me. I like the vocals a lot actually as far as their style goes. Never stuck on any one note instrumentally either, seems to change roots every quarter note, very impressive. Could definitely be longer. Nice little instrumental breaks are my favorite part. Fade out endings are a little anti-climactic for me, but otherwise a solid piece, I wish there had been a better ending so I could give it a 10.

Banits of the Acoustic Revolution - Here's to Life
I have no idea what 3rd wave ska is opposed to ska ska.
Begins with an acoustic guitar and maybe a bass back there somewhere. Pretty cool riff. Then we get the drums and horns. It sounds like a polka. The singer has that voice. I really like these punk singer voices lately. There is a better horn section when the vocals drop out. I really like these ones.
I think there's a cello in there too. The drummer...are there two maybe? The song doesn't seem to match the title. It isn't as happy go-lucky as I'd hoped.
It really does sound like a polka. There are a bunch of little breaks for horns and that cello. I think it's a cello. Maybe it's some horn I didn't know existed. There's also a piano part in the middle. I like that this song is long but has tons of variation.

Never heard, or heard of, these guys before.
Furia - Un Lac De Larmes Et De Sang - 4:47
Starts off with some church organs playing what seems like it's supposed to be a haunting tone. Soon joined by (slightly buried) church bells, and (male, I think) choral non-lyrical vocals. Around 0:26, the 'normal' instruments come in, the drums doing some very dramatic sounding pounding, which is pretty cool. I like this so far, it's reminding me a little of some Hollenthon (on Domus Mundi) stuff, except that so far, there isn't much of a hint, and certainly no guarantee, that it'll contain metal.
Oh, now this is weird. Guitars playing a reasonably simple metal riff, and there's some weird, pulsing electronic noises going on (vocals, maybe?). More conventional harsh vocals come in now. Sounds like two vocalists, though it could just be the one guy with two styles. The guitar and drums are both pretty good, so far, and various effects and stuff are still going on in the background.
This bit I like a lot. Around 2:00, there's all kinds of good stuff going on. The song's tune is now excellent, and the guitar is doing some very cool things.
It's basically carrying on in this 'awesome' vein for now. Around 2:40, I think, some kind of annoying synths or keyboards or something some in for a short while, but they're not awful, so I don't mind.
Slower bit now, more chugging, still liking it.
Hurrah, the awesome melody bit happens again just before 4:00. Song finishes on a prolonged vocal yell.
9/10 That was excellent, apart from a few occasionally annoying electronic noises or synths.

I had never heard the Refused but always wanted to get around to it so I thought I would use this opportunity to listen to a song.
0:00 to 0:09 - Very nice first guitar riff, that riff got me digging this song almost straight away.
0:10 to 0:19 - The guitar riff keeps going with some help from a hi-hat (I think), really builds up and then delivers.
0:20 to 0:37 - The drums really come into play in this section and they are playing really nicely too.
0:38 to 0:46 - All instruments kick in and they start to make some noise.
0:47 to 1:08 - Some weird synthesizer thing hits in, only bad part of the song.
1:09 to 3:04 - The vocals hit and are aided by some pretty heavy banging and crashing. I'm liking the who's and there's even bits of the first g-tar riff with some talking over the top.
3:05 to 3:25 - I'd almost call this a breakdown. Good stuff this.
3:26 to 3:32 - Goes to silence and then some weird track
3:33 - 5:08 - Bass drum hits and it goes back to normal for a big closing. Some bass solo's and stuff are nice before the volume gets turned way up and goes back to the formula for the ending of the song.
All in all, I loved this song, apart from the two synthesized bits it was brilliant. Great screaming, great g-tar, great bass, great drums. I'm loving this!
Does anyone know if there's anyways this weird synthesizer parts in Refused songs or just sometimes because I think I'll download some more of this band!

Killswith Engage - A Bid Farwell
0:00 - 0:46... Good beginning, don't appeal to the singers scream at the beggining though, and I have a feeling he'll do more of it in this song
0:47 - 1:28... The Verse and Chorus are here, singer isn't bad when he does his usually voice, but he his scream isn't all that great, and he's brutal at singing soft, it just ruins the song. There's a pretty cool Melodic Part at the chorus too.
1:29 - 2:28... Same thing happens here as in the 0:47 - 1:28 mark, just a bit longer.
2:29 - 3:11... The bridge of the song. I like the guitar here.
3:12 - 3:55 (end)... The song stops for about 2 seconds, then goes back into the chorus.
Overall, decent for a Hardcore band, I keep on tryin, but I still haven't found a Hardcore band I enjoy a lot, and I don't know if I will. I also just realized that this is the band who does "Rose of Sharyn", which isn't all that bad of a song itself.

Dimmu Borgir - In Death's Embrace
I've heard some single of their's and remember it being pretty good, especially for an MTV band.
Begins very well with some great drums and a blended guitar and then the keyboard. The keyboard is killer. They don't sound cheesy, they sound like a real piano. The intro repeats many times but it's fast and good so I don't mind. The vocals come in when the keyboards go out. I like the voice.
There is a slower section with a very classical piano sounding part with a guitar solo too. Shame the guitarist isn't really tearing away. I wish more blackmetal were more guitar heavy in the mix.
Then there is a synth part with no drums and a badly mastered bass.
Every part in this song is very enjoyable. There also isn't a lot of repetition in terms of hearing the same part many times. The song ends really well too, no fade-out crap.
Basically, this song is awesome. I am definitely looking into the guys some more. I have no complaints. The synths were used well and weren't cheesy, the vocals were good, the drummer was always doing his thing well, there was a guitar solo, not a great guitar solo, but it was there, and the song wasn't boring.

Age Of Silence - A Song For D. Incorporated
I've heard one song before, Auditorium Of Modern Movements, and it's grown on me quite a bit. Time to hear some more.
It opens with some bass and electronic drums, but thats not important. The melodic singing and music that sounds like Arcturus, there is some melodic synth stuff in music to fill up the silence. The singer isnt harmonizing very much like in the other song I heard. That is a good thing.
I dont know what its about but the singer sings a phone number and the music changes to a more stampy beat, theres flutes and other wind instruments in the background, but none of the synth that filled in every single gap before. It seems to be about some company that is annoying the singer. The normal band instruemnts are simple compared to Arcturus, but the others, like flutes and horns etc are rather complex. It's very melodic
It goes back to the first "verse" and there are some vocal interplays
The phone number is said again, and it goes in to a new bit with piano and some polyrhythms. Singing has the harmonizations again, they sound good as they are used more sparingly.
Theres a short fast keyboard solo. Then a strange bit with singing again. After that theres a piano section, and it sounds like real piano. Vocals come back again for 2 lines and it ends.
It's strange, not because of the music, that is unusual, but it's got heaviness all the way through and it doesnt seem very heavy at all.
I guess the orchestral instruemnts and vocals add so much melody that it is softened, and the flowing nature of the music seems could help too somehow.
The music is progressive, moreso than the other song I heard, and more interesting, but it seemed harder to listen to, I'm sure it will grow on me soon enough. It's good to see music appearing in such strange forms and combinations. Even if theres so much crap out there, I'm still all for the future of music after I hear something like this.

Atheist - Elements - "Water" (4:28)
wastes no time in the intro, starts imediately, with a very "chaotic" mix of guitar bass and drums. a really complicated intro, at 0:27, a lead guitar part comes in, it fits in quite well. The vocalist isn't that strong, not impactful enough. At 0:54, a "spanish like guitar solo" comes in. a great one. then it returns to the "chaos".
indeed very technical song, with lead guitars littered all over, different stlyes (jazz, a little touch of spanish, chaotic death metal type) the guitarists are great, the bass is really pumping. i personally don't like the vocals, it needs to be more impactful.

Avenged Sevenfold - Unholy Confessions
I think I heard a single by them once and wasn't impressed.
Song begins with a very metal core riff and it is good. Then drums come in and the guitars double. I like this but it has that sound of a song that might not get any better. It basically sounds identical to the KsE I've heard which isn't bad but does not bode well for me becoming a fan of the genre.
Then vocals. He's singing and has a decent voice. The lyrics seem kind of emo. Then he does the ugliest harsh vocals. Like gollum. They suck. Fortunately he goes back to cleaner vocals but his voice sounds less good this time. He sounds like the singer of Saliva. Then the chorus. I like this. It's one of those great metalcore super melodic choruses. I wish the guitars did something cool here though. It's just power chords. After the chrorus though, the guitars play an awesome riff. Jazz influenced. It's not fast but musically it is awesome.
The guitarists sound like they are better than what they do with this band. The drummer does nothing truly impressive. Some double bass but other than that he plays really easy sounding stuff.
I hate the prechorus with the Saliva vocals. The guitars are killer there but the vocals just screw it all up. There should be truly harsh vocals there. The chorus I really like as far as vocals go but the guitars are too simple.
This band seems afraid to show what they are capable of. I think I'll check more out in hope of hearing them play good stuff the whole way through a song without trying to balance it out with crap or mediocrity.

Between the Buried and Me - Arsonist
I was expecting an Atreyu ripoff like most of the other metalcore bands, but they caught me off guard. Not saying they're completely different, but at least they aren't just another clone. It starts off with some melodeath-ish riffing before the vocals come in. This is my biggest problem with the band. The singer uses two types of vocals...screams and growls. For the screaming, it sounds like he's doing his best to impersonate Tomas Lindberg, but fails miserably on all counts. Every word sounds forced and unnatural. The growling is worse...he's trying to get that guttural incoherent growl that Lord Worm does so well, but it ultimately comes off sounding like a burp with no energy at all behind it. The guitar work is average, and there's an okay solo thrown in there, nothing special. And of course, there are two obligatory breakdowns that do nothing to further the song.
5/10 I give them credit for not sounding like all the other metalcore bands out there, and for not having whiny emo-ish lyrics, but the vocals annoy me to no end. The rest of the band is average at best.

Karl Sanders - Luring the Doom Serpent
No idea what to expect since I can't hear the notes in Nile.
Begins with some sort of drum thing. Then other more normal sounding drums join. Then an acoustic guitar playing a very cool very melodic riff with a cool pick rake going on. The next riff is less cool but still cool. A gong in there too.
Then we go back to Riff #1 with a guitar solo like thing above. I like how it's all acoustic. The guitarist is good. His part is even better. The drums add a lot of atmoshpere. THen the two guitars do a sort of duel. It is awesome. Everything is so well intertwined. I like the scale being used a lot too. There is a weird hiss in there.
I would love to hear this man find a happy medium between this and Nile. Less brutal than Nile but still metal and with long instrumental and atmospheric stuff like this. It is awesome.

Mastadon - Iron Tusk
It starts off with a nice drum roll, then goes into a nice heavy guitar intro, that reminds me of Adema's Unstable, the singer joins in with a shoating technique that is also similar to Chavez' but deeper, and less whiney. The verse continues with a nice heavy powerchord production and nice shoated vocals. There is then another verse within the same pattern, and then it goes off into a similar yet much heavier and darker progression. At about 2:50 there is a solo, that leads into a nice heavy bridge and then the chorus again. The most stand out part of the song would probably be the drumming.
Over all I'd give this a 7/10, the vocals in most Mastadon songs are pretty good, but the voice is kinda lacking.
My choices:
Dark Tranquility - Punish My Heaven (gothenburg)

In Flames - Jotun
0:00 - 0:34... Great beggining to the song. I love the melodies the guitarists play, and the drummer puts in a well fit double-bass here.
0:35 - 1:25... This is where the verse, pre-chorus, and chorus is. The vocals start out with the dude talking (kind of lame), then he starts to do his singing (or so it is called) which is overall alright. Good chorus.
1:26 - 2:03... There's a boring part here that lasts for about 20 seconds, then it leads back into the intro part where the good guitar melodies are.
2:04 - 2:56... Bascially the same thing is here as was in the 0:35 - 1:25 mark.
2:57 - 3:56(End)... The song ends of with dfifferent sequences that were previously played at places in the song. The last about 12 seconds are just the guitars fading to end the song.
Overall, it's a good In Flames song. Similar to stuff off of "The Jester Race", which is when In Flames were actually good. I enjoy the Melodies, as I always do in In Flames' work. I've only ever heard "Gyroscope" off of this album, and this song is just as good, so maybe I'll look into it.

Amorphis - Into Hiding
I have heard a few Amorphis songs before, and I really like their later stuff best (Alone, The Way, Morningstar, etc.). I have already heard the song Black Winter Day, which I enjoyed a little, but not that much, so I have never tried any other song from their death metal era, until today.
The song starts with a really good chord progression and a great melody, along with a slow paced drum beat. A lot of emotion in that intro, starts really good. Only 16 seconds of this riff and they shift to a more intriguing part, I presume things are gonna get heavier soon. At 0:32 the voice comes in with a not so convincing first growl, should be more frightening. The riff is really killer though, reminds me of some Testament riffage, a little slower though. They keep doing this riff a little longer, adding double kick and some arabic sounding synth, very interesting part. The first verse starts after a very good 1:16 introduction. I don't like the growls, I think they lack attack and clarity. They sound way too far in the mix. Wish Akerfeldt or Swano would sing that part. The riff is good and I really like the guitar melody, but I don't like it's sound. The rythm guitar sound heavy and thick, but the lead guitar sound is flat and thin. At 2:00 there's a clean sung part, pretty nice, but I would have prefered a higher pitched and more powerful voice, maybe a female voice would sound great there. Short instrumental passage at about 2:30, same remarks concerning the guitar sound. At 2:42 begins the last vocal bit. At 2:58 there's a nice new slow paced headbanging riff leading into some kind of a bass solo, very interesting but really really short. The end.
All in all I really enjoyed the song, more then I anticipated. I like the guitar work a lot and the overall feeling of the song. The sound and the production of the song isn't doing justice to the great songwriting. I also don't like the vocals that much. The song is very dense and rich, but under developped. 3:45 is a rather short duration for a song containing that much musical ideas.
I'll give it a 7/10, but it could easily have been a ten with better production quality and vox.
Up for grabs :
Ayreon - Day 20 : confrontation (massive prog project featuring a lot of singers such as James Labrie, Mikeal Akerfeldt, Irene Jansen, Magnus Elkwall, etc.)
After Forever - Beautiful Emptiness (kinda goth and power, with a male grunter and a female soprano)

Lost Horizon - Cry Of a restless soul 8:22
Horrible intro. Its too abrupt, but after a few seconds, the introduction forms well.
The narrating at 0:24 gives a break to the sudden intro, and the song picks up from here. The band does well with the main riff, and the symphonic background is abosolutely gorgeous. at 1:05, the guitarist does some crazy power metal palm muting, sending energy into the listener's ears. Shortly after vocals do your power metal scream (read : balls in vice).
Verse kicks in, the verse lacks energy, the vocals need more energy, but technically, everything is co-ordinated well. This part here has everything, but lacks emotion.
The entire song is pretty much the same, i expected more from Lost horizon. its not bad, very good infact, but something is lacking, that power metal energy, the emotion. otherwise, everything else is great.

DragonForce - Dawn Of A New World
After the piano starts with a melodic intro, the voice enters and add a nice and warm tone to this ballad. The chords on the piano ring as the louder of the instruments of the band as ZP Theart starts singing with the DragonForce characteristic voice. The rest flows, as the guitars enter with distortion, making the song sound epic, and even warmer. But it's short, and very well applied, and now the guitars fade away, for another remarkable piano pad/voice duet, now with the drums adding some rhythm marking to the music.
The overdriven guitars enter again, and the song reaches a nice climax, and as ZP sings the chorus, the guitars confer a nice rhythm to it. The bridge, which is almost as long as a chorus, has a continuous lyric as well as continuous warm guitar sound, which will most probably warm up your heart, according to the well-known DragonForce' sound style. Then it comes the Li solo part, which will most probably cause the listener to have a shiver down the spine. The exclusively Li's part ends, because Vadim, soloing, enters, and follows Herman on a beautiful epic-style conclusion to the short solo section of the music. The solo is short, but fits just PERFECTLY into Dawn Of a New World. Probably one of the best solos i've heard. Every ending brings another beginning, and as the solos end, the voice enters again, with a marvelling background vocal section.
Then, it all stops, not too suddenly, because the piano goes on, and Theart's voice with effects, sounds pretty well. Well it's a short break, but then it starts again with the nice tone, and they augment the tune, so, now, the whole song is probably lifted up one or two steps, that reminds me of something similar happening on the end of Hollow Years (Dream Theater). It gives an even nicer tone to the song to finish.
And it's the end of a beautiful epic song. The lyrics fit perfectly as it's an use of DragonForce music style.
And once again, they made a beautiful song, without being too repetitive, like other bands, or in other way, being way over technician.
So, I guess it's a pretty good result, and a well spent effort from their part.
My ratings for this song would be (to make it easier for me, i'll put it list-like):
- Vocals - 9.5/10
- Instrumental - 10/10
- Lyrics -10/10
So, the whole, i guess, deserves pretty well a 10/10.

Children of Bodom - touch like an angel of death (4:05)
intro : lead guitar riff, with then rythmn entering with powerchords and drums. after vocals scream a little, the song builds up, and verse kicks in, an ordinary, standard metal song structure. but at 0:44, theres a mini keyboard solo, and the synths make it sound different. at 0:59, the way the distortion kicks in is great, and it builds back up to the the intensity again, this time making you headbang. the vocals fit quite, even though i don't know why people don't like alexi's vocals at 1:59, it starts going a little crazy and everything speeds up, obviously, the lead and drums. the double bass are quite sloppy compared to nicholas barker, and mithras's drummer., but solid enough for me. random pinch harmonics here and there are great, but needs more piercing attack. then the solo comes in. a great solo, sometimes rock sounding, then goes into crazy scaling, i think i heard an apreggio too. then it slows down to the keyboard part, and distortion comes in again. well, i expected more from bodom, this song lacks energy from the rythmn guitars. especially the palm muting of bass strings. the guitars are too "sythnesized", they need to be more like metallicas', sharp and screaming.

Alice Cooper - Poision
This song starts off with some nice sythns and a cool little riff, then goes into the main verse. Good singing here, the only song id heard by these guys was on Waynes World, which was 'Frankesntein.' I like his voice alot, very eerie.
The chorus is one of the most memorable and catchy tunes ive heard in a while, with 'I wanna hold you but i bet not touch (Dont Touch!)' still in my head after listening to the song ten minutes ago. Some nice guitar in here as well, but it is mostly synth dominated, as with alot of 80's glam metal. Guitar chords are very exagerated, with single strums with all the chords in the chorus.
The drums and bass in this song are very boring, with the drums being a straight 4/4 beat all the way through, and the bass seemingly rooting through most of the song, and they even throw in a predictable chorus key change to top off the proceedings.
Nice solo in the back of the last chorus though, very glam.

Avenged Sevenfold - Second Heartbeat
First one of these, so sorry if it is terribly done.
Starts with a little bit of guitar and a standard punkish roll on the snare. This all stops to allow for a classical (metal) lead guitar piece with drums being thumped to fit.
After this section is finished with, it goes into a poor tempo change bit, where the bass really starts to be noticeable, too noticeable, rancid tone to it. Aswell as all of this, it all sounds pretty bog standard, with the screamy vocals and the sung vocal style meshed which seems all the rage nowadays.
From the 2 minute mark up to about the 2:40 mark you have to suffer some horrible vocals. 'ohOhOhoh' harmonies and whatever. Nice drum fill at 2:50 though. The riff after is much better, nicely composed with some stop starts and nice chugging double bass.
At 3:40 a bland snare drum section comes in, pretty boring, not half as uplifting as you would want it to be. The bass is sticking out like a sore thumb again. More God awful singing. It's getting a little repetative, what the slower section did in making this song good is just lost now. Worst vocals ever at 5:10.
Oh the outro is far better. The solo I quite like, but it's still not enough to make thing song good.

Sorry, but i've got it first.
MDB - The raven and the rose 8:12
Intro - Very irritating distorted trebles on the guitar, but when the downtuned distortion comes in, the song starts off well, and the synths add well to the doomish atmosphere. Nice dobule bass/snare/tom fills by the drummer over here. The growled vocals, are quite ok, nothing very suprising, but a great song so far.
at 2:25, the song kind of slows down a little, i'm hoping for some mdb cleans here. Yes! at 2:38, the clean vocals come in. It starts to get depressing. always mdb has its cleans being the depression factor.
at 3:13, very nice palm muting over here, and a pick slide.
at 4:02, the song speeds up, with choirs at the back, and it gets intense over here.
at 5:15, it turns back to slow again.
at 5:51, it really slows, to piano only. a good break from the distortion.
a part where it allows tears to flow (if applicable), and end, from the intense part just now.
at 6:55, the guitars come back in again, and fade away. this part is kind of redundant, should have ended at the pianos.
anyway, a great song, just had to do away with the swearing, and it'd be great.

Alice in Chains - Them Bones
Starts with a palm muted riff and Layne doing his signature little yelp. Singing starts, nice riff in the background, I'm really liking the verse. Layne's voice is pretty good here, really good actually. Short chorus, but good. Again with the yelping. I like the way Layne sings the verses, it goes perfect with the guitar. Jerry starts off with a solo, it doesn't dissapoint so far with the verse riff in the background. So far not really fast, more melodic. Now it gets a little quick, nothing godspeed though. Wah at the end, great solo in general. Another verse, another chorus, Layne repeating the line, "I feel so alone, gonna end up on big ole pile o' them" till the end, a few seconds later.
In overall, a great song by Seattle's finest; guitar was excellent, vocals were top notch [in Layne's case], but the drums were pretty basic, and I didn't really notice any bass.

Stormtroopers of Death - Milk
Never heard of them.
Begins with some bass. Then loud guitars and a sort of growl. Then the real drums come in with a ton of snare that is way too loud and keeps going. Then the vocals which are punk sort of chants. The song is alright when the drums go away but then they come back and it just sucks. Too much snare that is not cool. Mastodon has cool snare work, this band does not. Song is repetitive.
At least it's short. Nice and short.

Kadenzza - Monohoke - God of Worm
For about the first 1:30 seconds of the song it kind of alternates between two parts. One part being slower with a riff, basic drum beat, and some kind of keyboard effect in the background. The other part is far faster, with a heavy growl.
at about 1:30 it goes into a nice riff and a neat double-bass beat and then you hear a very nice guitar solo all up until about 2:30.
Then you get a dose of acoustic guitar work, with some percussion and keyboard work in the background. At about 3:40 some dialog is added to the slow acoustic guitar part.
At 3:23 your smacked out of the acoustic guitar and fall right into a huge guitar riff and it stays mellow with a bell ringing in the background until about 4:53 where you hear the same alternating of slow/fast part from the begining.
Then it all ends with some bells ringing and a choir note.

Primus - Harold of the Rocks
First ever Primus song I listen to, but I know them for having a supposely very talented bassist called Les Claypool. I'm eager to hear how good he actually is.
Song starts off and I immediatly dislike the singer's voice. He's got a thin and nasal voice. He is backed up by a nice funky wahwah riff and some cool closed hi-hat drumming. Very cool sounding introduction (except for the vocals), not the kind of stuff I am used to, but I like it, I somehow like the funky groove of that thing. Interesting shift at 0:33, a more chaotic riff, the guitar sound is very raw, the bass very important in the mix. Then returns to the funky verse, then the chaotic riff again, adding a few not so melodic variations. Aaaaahhhh, a bass solo, as expected :) All right he has the skills. Next is a slow paced guitar solo. The solo isn't my cup of tea neither. It is not melodic at all, sounds like a first take, the shredding part at 3:20 is awful in my opinion. The solo is very long, a little over 90 seconds. They then come back to the verse, and what finally seems to be the chorus, which I described as the chaotic riff earlier. Then there's a weird narrative thing in the end, and then an unexpected, weird finish.
I like the funky part of the song and the rythm section of this band seems really strong. I'm more into melodic and emotive music so that's not my thing really much. They are very creative and original, and I guess they are pretty entertaining live, that they enjoy a lot playing that kind of not so serious music.
I'll give it a 5/10, I won't be listening to this song for long, guess I'll delete it in about a week. I don't think I'll look for some more from them neither. I liked some parts, but that is just not my kind of music.

Ayreon - Day Twenty: Confrontation
Never heard of these guys before, nor have I heard much like it before. I suppose this is what this thread was intended for though eh?
It begins with a very soft, effect laden guitar riff, very very simple. Two vocalist contrast well at the beginning. Very abruptly into a heavy part of the song, all instuments seem very simple yet effective.
Again back to the opening riff, with the vocalists contrasting and using the 'call and answer' technique. Similarly as to the intro it progressed abruptly into the heavier part, this time their is a female singer and it complements this part perfectly.
This part progresses into a new riff. The song has a very space age sound to it, like when Homer goes into the 3-D land :thumb: All the vocalists are extremly talented, and have a great range. There is a new riff again softer... This continues for a bit and then it is distorted and a more powerful male voice is used, singing the same words as the singer before.
Again back to the beginning riff. Again the call and answer effect is used. Again into the heavier part, this song is starting to get very repeditive.
Whoa, nice little vocal display/solo from the female vocalist, her voice is really full and defined.
The tempo picks up although it is the same chord progression it still is keeping me intersted due to a male vocalist screaming and the female vocalist still utilising her voice. Whoa double kick? Wasn't expecting that. Snare hits increasing, to a very once again abrupt stop where the song is basically completed.
The song reminded me very much of Queen, although the style is different, the vocals harmonising with each other and contrasting just seem make me think of them. The instruments although very simplistic did their job, the guitarist must have used many effects to achieve the sound that he had going.
As expected the thing that carried this song were the vocals. I was, as you all probably can tell, blown away by the female vocalist, her voice was literally awesome to me.
Rating: 7/10
There was two things that this song lacked, a guitar solo and versatility. The song was too long to have the same structure, and little change in feel and lyrics until the last minute of the song.
Having said that I still really enjoyed the song, thanks fast fingers for uploading it.

Okay, this won't be my first experience with Mudvayne, but I wasn't particularly impressed with what I heard before, so this will be my first time really paying attention to them.
Mudvayne - Internal Primates Forever - 4:25
Starts off with pretty slow, odd riffing. Drums and (noticeably) bass come in around 0:10, along with vocals. Sounds like he's saying "jump". Verse starts, and I can see how they've gotten their reputation as 'weird'. The whole thing sounds "bitty". The vocals are mostly relatively clean (little growling or anything), but I can't really understand what he's saying. At least, not while typing. The guitar and drums both sound a bit too all-over-the-place for their own good, and it's kind of annoying. I like the bass though, it's fairly prominent and has a good sound.
Sorry, this is going to be a really bad review. There just doesn't seem to be much I can say. The guitars, despite the jerkiness, definitely sound like nu metal, but they're offset by that bass, which is really quite good.
This bit I like more; about 1:41 it's like the gaps between those riffs have been filled in, and there's a more flowing riff, which I like a whole lot more.
Total change of pace from about 2:30 onwards, but I can't keep my mind focused enough to figure out in what way. There's less of the stop-start jerkiness which I disliked before, though it's still present. The song ends with the vocalist (and backing vocals) repeating the title of the song (almost chanting it, but not quietly).
Well, that was weird. I didn't like the jerky, too-stop-start-for-it's-own-good part that the guitar and drums took for most of the song. The bass however, was really good. The vocalist kind of veered between good and bad.
Not sure what to give it. I think a cautious 7/10, and I'l probably have to listen to this more and check them out further.

That Neubauten track is a live version, with an air compressor solo at the beginning. It's a great piece of music, but unfortunately a lot of it's appeal also lies in it's lyrics, which are in German, and other aspects. The song is very carefully written, both in lyrics and structure, and becomes much greater than it already is if you know it's circumstances and such...not much can be done about that though, so this is just my futile attempt at explaining the inexplicable.

Aternicy - Holder of the Eye
Starts off with some snare work, then adds in guitar, then bass. I like the way it builds up like that, then it comes into the main riff in the song. Double bass and lots of tom work drives the song well coming into the verse, and amazingly, vocals don't come in until 2 and a half minutes in. You never get bored the whole time though. Lots of change ups, more so than you see in many instrumental pieces in fact. This has tons of riffs which is great because there are enough repeated ones to establish structure, but at the same time there is a lot to discover whilst listening.
Production is not fantastic, and the most noticeable issue is that during the guitar solo, the rhythm guitar is louder than the lead and I had trouble hearing it. It sounded fairly good, very Thrash influenced I think, but it was really tough to pick it out, which is a shame.
Musically, this piece is pretty complex, there is a lot to it and it takes several listens to absorb it all which is very nice, because so many bands are easy to give one listen and discard. All the musicians seem good at what they do, the vocals are perhaps less talented than the rest of the group imo. Sort of reminds me of Megadeth's vocals, which I am not very into either. Chorus was weird first listen because I thought it was being said in a different language, their pronunciation of the title is very interesting and made me think Middle Eastern. No doubt hard to find, but I'll definitely see if I can't find some more.
9/10 due to subpar production and not liking the vocalist a ton, though he fit with the band pretty well.

If you go to the Audio Arena and search, there should be a thread linking to several of their songs up for download; there used to be, anyway. Their website used to be www.anternicy1.com, I think, but I don't think it's there any more. The vocalist left a while ago, and they may have split up.

It's actually pretty easy to use. The basic idea is that you upload whatever file you like temporarily to their bit of free webspace. The email it's asking for is the email of whoever you're wanting to give the file to; it sends an email to that address saying "Hello, someone's sent you this file, hosted at *link*".
I always just put my own email address in, though, because once the file's uploaded, you (the person uploading it) are given a link anyway, for convenience's sake. Which you can then hand out to friends/post on MX/etc until it gets taken down again.

Not heard or heard of these guys before.
38th Parallel - Higher Ground - 3:47
Starts off with a really cool rock riff. I mean, I really like this riff. I'm not sure if I'll like it after a few dozen times hearing it, but for now, I like it. It's got some acoustic guitar, I think, enhancing it by flitting around the edges of the main heavier riff.
Vocals come in, and I immediately somewhat like the song less. The guy, whoever he is, doesn't have a particularly bad voice, but I just think hard rock either needs someone with a really good voice (talented singer, I mean) or a gruff male voice. Not to say that's exclusive (Young Heart Attack, for example, fall into neither category, and their vocals are one of my favourite things about them), but I just want to get the point of why I don't like them so much across.
Still, it's not faltered the song too badly. The music I still quite like. The chorus is good, and has that opening riff backing it, even if, as a whole, it does feel a little safe, if you know what I mean. There's nothing to challenge you going on here, but for all that it's done well enough.
The structure of the song is impeccably normal. Intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus. It ends by fading out.
A solid 7/10 It's a reasonably respectable and perfectly enjoyable piece of easy-to-listen-to rock. Plus it had that riff.

Nonpoint - Double Stakked
Seems a little surprising for Bartender to recommend nu-metal... so I'm investigating.
A simple guitar riff opens proceedings, and some fairly straightforward drumming follows quickly. There is other percussion too, its a bit like the slap bass sound of Korn, but it sounds better here as actual percussion.
It drops off to just bass and drums, semi-rapped vocals, some screamy one-worders.
Some prominent slap bass, then a heavy chorus about "I got that funky feeling".. nothing really imressive so far.
Same again. But the second chorus slows right down at the end of it, and it goes to an almost reggae feel. This reminds me of an Ochre song, the very same thing happens in the middle. The drums, bass and percussion, carries the rhythm while the guitars are sparse and somewhat atmospheric. I'm liking this bit.
The vocalist is back and he manages to sound a bit like Maynard here, whereas before he wasn't really anything standout (in either good or bad ways).
It gets heavier after a bit, but keeps the slow feel. Then it stops but for a few drum fills. I thought it would have ended up going faster, but it's gone back to the soft reggae bit again. Lots of guitar harmonics, a little guitar solo too, cool.
It fades out on this slow part, which isn't what I expected. I thought it would go heavy, and faster again.. but I don't mind when music goes against what's expected.
For nu-metal.. the first half was typical I guess, and I didn't really think much of it. The second half was good for me, I like that stuff, even when it went heavy for a bit, it was still better than the first half. However, the 2 parts didn't seem to match well and may as well have been 2 different songs. The instrument playing was above average, and it was fairly decent, nothing super though.

Broken Social Scene - Looks Just Like the Sun
So I've heard of but never heard of Broken Social Scene. Don't know what to expect.
Begins with a jazzy sounding classical guitar part and drums. Pretty chilled out. Then vocals which are nice and some bass guitar which is simple but soothing. Some noises are twittering around in the back and add to the song.
Then there is a sample saying "Keep going" and leads into a slightly different part but everything is the same for the most part. This song slowly builds up but more by adding more parts, not increasing intensity. There is even a little guitar solo which is pretty cool. One of those ones you should learn for just fooling around with some freinds who don't play instruments. This song is really cool. The vocalist reminds me of someone but I don't know who. There is a choir in the background now.
I like the little spoken commands as though it were a jam whcih it well may be based on the repetition. It's good repetition though because of the layering.
Post 3:40 - I still like this part. I think it is really cool and chilled out but it is sad sounding. Then some loud noise interrupts and then a clicking. Then the song is over.
I'll find more.

Kadenzza - Mononoke - God Of Worm
A creepy march riff with synth strings and industrial guts opens the proceedings.
They stop for some half speed blast with some black metalish vocals, sounds somewhat mechanical. Sometimes the blasting is fast.. sometimes not. It seems random as to what they choose to play To get it out... I don't like when it's just blasting away with little to no melody, it bothers me.
There are many slight variations of each of the 2 musical ideas, and they are changing rather rapidly.
At 1:30, it goes more melodic, there's a wild keyboard solo, doubled by guitar?
At 2:30 fingerpicked guitar comes in, very soft here, after a while of this.. soft strings, and the sound of birds... some vocal samples.. how very contrasting to what came first in this song. I'm liking it, but dreading what I thinks going to happen when this bit's finished...
After about 2 mins it slows down... yep.. heres heavy industrial sounding marchy riff, a new one. but theres synth strings, even if dissonant, it's good to hear something with a distinct Hz reading, some bell sounds too and some seething bass hissing.. and back to halfspeed blasts and black metal vocal mechanisms. Goes between the fast and slow blasts often, there is much more keyboard use here too.
A short pause, "I am _____, god of worm" dunno what it says, but it's not Mononoke.
Then probably the heaviest and fastest bit yet comes in, but its not that long, it ends soon after with a few sparse, creepy keyboarded sounds taking it out.
Hmm.. no, its not the type of thing I go for, weirdly interesting though. The second time in FL today I don't see how the contrasting part fits, but it was a good breather from the intense bits. Those heavy bits weren't so bad by the end, maybe I got used to them, maybe it's because there were those keyboard sounds along with them at that point.
Drums like that will probably always annoy me, but melodies, even dissonant stuff, smooths them right out.. I cant really decide, its kind of a musical shock to me.. but it wasn't all that bad after all...
6.4/10?

Alarum - Reconditioned
Begins with some nice chorused guitar. Then the drums and other guitar come in in a rhythmic chug but with the first riff still going. I like it. Then the chuggy guitars pick up and a guitar solo soon follows. I like the opening bit better, it was more original. In any case, this is still very, very good. The vocals. The singer is not my cup of tea. He has that same sort of crappy vocal like the Vader singer. At least the rest of what is going on is really good. Then clean vocals which are awesome. Reminds me of Winds there.
The drummer just keeps going with that double bass. It's not a blazing fast double bass, but it moves at fair speed. Overall this song is really good. Only the vocals are lacking.

I own and like The Imaginary Direction of Time, but not Reflections of the I, so I can review this. I know more or less what to expect though, I think.
Winds - Realization - 4:54
Starts with a relatively simple beat, and a nice wash of piano and strings. I think I was right in what I was expecting. Vocals come in, and it sounds like the same guy, though his voice sounds slightly different. He's got a really good voice, though; not too high pitched, but he really can sing, which fits the music excellently. I'm rather looking forward to some guitar pyrotechnics, I'll admit, since on The Imaginary Direction.., the guitarist is a bit of a nut.
So far I'm just getting little bits of guitar, nothing too good or bad. Ah, wait; a solo. Long (1:26-2:06 approximately), reasonably slow, and nicely widdly. Good stuff. After the solo, a non-singing, almost spoken-word voice comes in. This is the kind of voice you'd associate with Thriller; low, overly dramatic. Like that at the beginning of What is Beauty? It seems to be something Winds use quite a bit.
After he stops speaking, the "conventional" instruments fade away and we get just a string section playing.
Swift drum intro brings us back into the song some time later, and we're straight back in, with guitar more prominent than before and the guy singing over the top. Strings still playing in the background. This bit I like; after the guy stops singing, the drums are double-bassing away in the background, and the guitars play a pretty good riff.. on which the song leads out.
7.5/10 Just more good stuff from Winds. Ended a little abruptly, I think.

North - Untitled
Song starts with a a nice funky bassline. The whole band then joins in. Sounds like drums, keys and a guitar. The sound they create is a very chilled one. Now the vocals come in... Not too sure if I like his voice.
The same bassline from the beginning continues, with a guitar repeating a fairly simple man riff. The drummer keeps a simple beat going. The keys sound like they are just repeating the same chords, to keep the chord progression 'in tact' or even noticeable, this technique probably helps the bass and guitar mesh together, without them, it may sound just random.
Into the chorus there is a change in bassline, and guitar lead simple yet very effective keeps the same feel from the beginning of the song and sounds really relaxed. Still not sure whether I enjoy the vocals or not...
Back into the verse with the same format as the previous verse... Guitar dropped out and keys played the melody nice...
Into the chorus again, this time with back up vocals, very nice stuff. The atmosphere is still very relaxed.
Guitar solo - Simplistic however it fits the music. [3:26] - [3:30] that part of the solo really didn't fit the song. But the rest of it seemed to be really nice. He loves his mutes :thumb:
Into the bridge with a new guitar riff and the vocalist and the back up vocalist really just singing 'ohhhh' perfect for the atmosphere they had set. Then they had the keys play a relatively high part to finish, very nice way to end the song.
Rating - 9/10
I loved the song itself and the structure, however I'm just not sure about the vocalist, I can't quite place it, I don't dislike his voice, I think after a few more listens it would be alright :thumb:

You can do two if you like, a double review, but common practice is just to do one, and recommend a few songs for the next person. You're only supposed to take about 2 hours after you call dibs, though.
Dream Theater - Hollow Years
now from what i know of dream theater, this song will be awesome. It is. starting with a simple time-keeping beat, it then brings in acoustic/classical guitar, drums, and a bass. Very easing sound, the kind you can fall asleep to. When the vocals come in, the song sounds complete. A very good guitar riff, easy (meaning soothing, its actually somewhat complex) bass, and drums. The chorus sounds like a worship song, but is very good. Great structure to the lyrics. They match the music perfectly. After the first chorus, a piano comes in for a short while, and then fades and the verse starts. Nearer to the end of the song, teh chorus (I think) Is repeated again, only a little harder, the vocalist is more prodominate with another singer. They repeat a line with the piano in the background, it sounds very worship-like. The song ends like that, with the piano guitar and drums doing their own outro.
Overall, a 8/10. Not what i expected from D.T. but good none-the-less.

yeh, I got discouraged after trying about 4 times to send a song to PAAA, without success, and I'm sure he got the sh'ts with me about that...
Well, I got borked by the Zao download restarting, from zero, twice! Already know the Coldplay song, so here's ..
Skillet - Forsaken
Distorted guitar intro, very nu-metal in style. Other instruments (bass/drums) then vocals come in. He sounds like the Nickelback singer... and there's also digital vocal corrections... :(
Very typical sounding, Evanescence level, nu-metal verse, it's not very heavy. Christian lyrics I guess, thats fine, he can sing about what ever he wants to.
There's a softer pre-chorus with some synth strings/keyboards in there too., and then a typical heavy (on the nu-metal scale) chorus.
The song goes through melodic passages of heavy-not so heavy-heavy, with an even heavier bridge in there, it's a predictable pattern of rises and falls, it seems longer than it should... I guess its not following the simple verse-chorus-verse thing exactly.
At least the intstruents sound gutsy when played, the girl on drums sounds powerful.
I'm sure it's popular with the younger teen crowd, just a Christian take on what's popular in pop/rock music. Fairly melodic, easy on the ears, though theres a few screams in it.
Sadly this type of thing offers very little inspiration to me musically, I like my music interesting, defiant, and unafraid to do something different. This was just to simple, too common
I can't say I hated it, but I'll take a whole point off for that vocal correction.
It ends up about 4.5/10

Hot Rubber Glove - Mud Elephant
First things first, oooo techno. This should be tough.
Starts with a beep-like thing, brings in very electronic sounding drums, doing a lil bit of randomness to the beat. Then piano and vocals, reminds me of DDR.
The vocals drop out, so we are left with a beat from the beep, the drums, and piano. Then a xylaphone/metalaphone comes in, and a synth. Its got me into it now, its trance, and i love trance. The xylaphone is an awesome addition to the song.
About 4 min or so into the song, vocals come in, in a foreign language. theres a little bass in the back that is getting repetitive, as are the drums.
Then a saxaphone. Its really getting boring, i must say. Thank god its over.
overall: no more then a 4. It really was not that great for trance/techno at all.
Both my rec.'s are techno in some sort of sense.

I own Endtroducing, so it has to be the Dust Brothers. I get the feeling I'll already have heard this in passing though, on Fight Club.
The Dust Brothers - Psycho Boy Jack - 2:57
Okay, I've listened through this a few times now, and have discovered a couple of things; firstly, it does sound familiar. Secondly.. as far as Forced Listening goes, it's an awful song. I actually quite like it overall, it's pretty good, but for Forced Listening, it sucks a lot, simply because not much happens.
Most of it is almost impossible to describe without sounding like you have the vocabulary of a child, e.g. I could say "well it starts off with this weird pulsing sound, which carries on for a while, and then this funny weedle-eedle-eedle sounds comes in. That goes on for a while, and then we get some "real" instrumentation (i.e. some drums and guitar playing), over which this noise continues weedle-eedle-eedling." etc.
I just don't know what to say, since it seems to be based a lot on repetition and practically indescribable sounds. It's good though, none of the noises get annoying (except perhaps this very deep bass sound that repeats itself for a while). Only real complaint is that it's short, and it makes bad Forced Listening fodder.
7/10 Sorry for the short review.

Mr.Bungle - The Girls of Porn
Been meaning to try and find some music by this band, so had to do the FL on them.
Also, I'm glad I did this review before a youngster decided to.
The track opens with some fitting sound effects, I'm guessing from one of Patton's favourite videos, shortly accompanied by what I guess is a marraca and a funky, but quiet, guitar diddle. After the brief speech telling us about the competion, and a scream of '666!' we get some overdrive and what is essential a rockin' riff. Not uber heavy, but very bang your headish.
A nice drum bridge brings you into the verse and the first sounds from what I guess is a Sax. The guitar, bass and sax mix wonderfully, with the sax dropping out when Patton begins to sing. This song reminds me of Vice City, even though it wasn't on the soundtrack I believe. Patton's vocals are great, funny/good lyrics aswell.
The interlude allows for a bit more of the audio from the video, with the name Mr Bungle appearing in it too. The part which I would call the chorus is not a let down, the 'whomping' bass line is excellent. Patton's voice is brilliant and it all sound funky as together. The intro piece is repeated again, with a little extra percussion to bring you out of the chorus part.
The verse is repeated again, this time with different lyrics, and at the end we get a brief solo on the guitar, which is over powered by the audio sample, which isn't too good. Patton has a vocal solo after this, using lots of different styles to describe all the various styles of **** he knows.
4:00 brings back the 'whomping' bass, and it's brilliant. The song plays again until a break where you here a female voice say "Mr Bungle" and it comes back with the intro riff, this time with far more going on, a guy saying 'I'd buy that for a dollar!'. The song carries on in this vein until the end, with some frantic sax to finish, and a few shouts of 'yeah!'.
Brilliant song. Maybe a bit offensive, so I will give it a 9/10.

Porcupine tree - Sleep of No Dreaming
Prog Rock - Approx. Running time = 5:24.
The song kicks off with some broken chords on an organ, is joined by windchimes and is promptly followed by drums and bass. A very Chilled and relaxed start to the song. Clean vocals join around the 20 sec mark and add to the relaxed, laid back feeling.
A short drum fill leads us in to an epic chorus which picks up the pace a 'lil. Clean guitar w/reverb enters, imitating the organ intro. Emtional vocals soar over the top of this.
1:30 mark and we move back into the intro section, this time with a nice guitar solo, also laid back. The vocals join back in around the 2 min mark, and this section is essentially the same, bar the odd organ variation.
Another drum fill takes us back into the chorus section, which then repeats it's self with slight overdubs and no vocals. The momentum of the song has really built up by the end of the second repeat before being cut back again by entering a drum and bass section. Which is also, I hasten to add, laid back. Vocals also come in on top of this. Eerie overdubs barely audible in the background create a nice sense of ambience.
The Chorus is again revisted after this at the 3:46 mark, and it also does the repeat with overdubs. This time the overdubs ascend towards the end of the section and give a great sense of climax.
At 4:31 the chrous is altered by throwing in some atonal notes, which dispel the sense of Climax. However this sense is then continued with an ascending feel which draws the song to a dramatic close.
I've liked everything I've heard by Porcupine Tree, and this song is no exception. It's very laid back and is great for relaxing to.
8/10

Wow, eight minutes to review, hope this is awesome.
Yeah...actually, it's really good. I'm going to need several more listens to even give this a decnt review heh...
The strings make this song. I love them. I love classical music, and this has all the trappings of a classical composition piece and...well, I never knew I would be able to call a metal piece truly beautiful, but it really is. Starts out with some strings (I think Cellos) and a beat being held contant on the bass drum. Some more strings are added (vio
