Marylin Manson - Sweet Dreams

Huh? A remake of the classic by the Eurythmics? Blasphemy! Well, it ain't actually that bad. I don't mind a bit of Manson every so often, I own Antichrist Superstar, and it's a very good CD. Anyway. It starts with some weird sounds, then the riff, on a guitar instead of the cheesy 80's synth. Manson's drawl comes in, singing the line 'sweet dreams are made of these...' it sounds pretty cool. Then a bass comes in, and drums follow it. It's a pretty heavy build up now, at least for a nu-metal song. Then the riff in a sort of weird keyboard effect. I don't know whether I like or dislike it. Then the 'sweet dreams' bit again. He has a nice range in his range, he has this nice raised voice, then he goes back to his drawl, then a crappy little scream. Then there's a kind of a synth solo. A bit of a instrumental bit, then a guitar solo. Nothing fancy, but it's pretty good. Now to his whispering bit, I don't really this bit. It's got nice piano in it though. It's kind of samey throughout the whole song now, unfortunately.

6/5/10. It's pretty good, but it's too slow throughout. He has done a lot better.

Nothing like Power Metal to get the heart pumping and the sword-arm swinging.

Rhapsody - Eternal Glory

Well, I enjoy power metal... so I decided to check these guys out.

The song starts out with a medieval march theme... very power metal. It is inspiring though. The drums kick in with a rolling march. Then the first theme comes back, with more cymbal clashing then a high school band. All of a sudden the metal sets in with a nice fast riff, and some quick drumming. The singer starts a bit later, his voice is nice when it's soaring, but sounds kind of sleazy when he comes down for the verses.

The guitar work in the background is pleasant, but it's just a continuation of the intro riffs. The chorus is great, as more of the band join in to deliver a soaring swell of voices. Then the noise drops, the singers softly delivers a few lines, followed by a very nice piano and guitar interlude. Then the speed picks up again, and they kick back into the main song. The chorus at the end is very impressive. After the chorus ends, there is a soft, Irish-sounding ending on the piano, complemented by some guitar strumming. The song ends to the sounds of crickets.

Ok, let's break down the song.
Medieval march for the beginning? Check.
Lyrics about dragons, knights and honour? Check.
Yep, it's definitely a power metal song.

Overall, though, I liked it, especially the interlude. There was enough musicianship and technical skill in this song to set these guys apart from the run-of-the-mill power metal band. And I think the song progressed well, from the march at the start to the soft swell at the end. I give it 9/10.
I think I would listen to more by the band in the future.

My picks: (Still in the Aussie Mood)
Australian Crawl - Beautiful People or The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock)
Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock)
Silverchair - Steam Will Rise or Suicidal Dreams (Grunge)

ac/dc whole lotta Rosie

I'm not a big fan, so sorry if it's a bit byased.

starts off with very bluesy like guitar parts of a sec of 2, then some singing, guitar, singing, guitar, singing.
at 0;30 it goes different
and actually a nice beat.
1:10 whole lotta Rosie, sung in a really ac\dc like style imo.

goes on with this nice sound, and all of the sudden stops at 2:00

hmz, not much more to review

hm
opinion:
I like the song actually, vocals aren't too annoying, I normaly hate his vocals.
it sounds too much 80's garage rock if you ask me, or it's just the style of ac/dc.
it's catchy and all, but just doesn't do the trick.

and sorry for the short review, just can't tell much exciting about it.

ow, score..

7/10

My Dying Bride - For You

Starts off nice and strong, good riff, sounds like an keyboard underneath

then 00:30, guitar plays on its own, then the same riff, with another playing over..nice and atmospheric, and keyboard playing strings underneath..nice.
this continues with the vocals, they are slow, as if singing the lyrics is painful to the singer.
01:56 - break with strings, and a heavier riff still at same pace
02:19 - back into lone guitar and next verse, i like the music in the verses :thumb:
still continuing, without vocals, until,
04:26, back into the intro riff..very effective and with double bass drumming
back to lone guitar at 04:56, then back to the heavy riff ( 01:56 )
i get the feeling the songs dragging on a bit, basically repeating the same 3 parts, but its not that annoying
back to intro riff at 05:35
lone guitar finishes the song
quite a depressing song lol, but i like that from time to time

Overall i enjoyed this song quite a bit, but like i said, it dragged on a bit at the end, maybe a solo would have made it better, 7/10.
Ill be checking out more of their stuff

cathedral - fountain of innocence.

starts off with the entire band playing, just from the beginning you're in the good doom sound.
0:50 vocals come in, but sound distorted.
nice steady bassline, and some quite high pitched guitars in the background.
1:27 it gets heavier. I like this more.
no more distortion on the vocals, that sounds better.
2:10 after a short bridge, a soft part, with the distorted vocals once more, but this sounds better.
2:45 heavy part again, which suits the music nice.

3:10, accoustic guitar the way it should be!, and great clean vocals
4:02 heavy electric guitars take over.
and some rougher vocals.
4:20 a solo comes in.
short though, and flows over into a bridge.
5:30 drums take a bit more lead. only very short though.
5:38 sounds like some soloing part , not a real solo, more like a jam session solo.
but it sounds ok.
at 6:08 a true solo emerges.
and this solo carries on, till the end of the song, I like long solos :)

opinion:
Í'm into doom metal ,and always wanted to check this band out, but I can't find stuff on the internet.
great doomy sound, and nice breakups, soft/hard/soft/solo, and so on.
nice bridges, and of a nice lenghth, not just to connect two pieces of the songs, but it is part of the music, ( as it should be)
I'm not to big a fan of the strange distorted vocals.
the solo, especially in the end, is cool.

score: 8,5/10

APC-Sleeping Beauty

I hadn't heard this APC song in a while, so I chose it to refresh my memory. I like the format you guys have been using in the latest two reviews, so I'll do the review that way.

0:00 Starts off with a mediocre riff and interesting drums
0:24 Smooth singing verse
0:50 good pause for effect
0:52 slightly different riff with good ounding distortion
1:04 another verse
1:16 very mellow chorus
1:33 another smooth sounding verse
2:06 chorus-a little too mellow in my opinion
2:30 chorus with verse lyrics-This i really like
2:55 guitar solo???
3:20 another solo, but not sure of instrument
3:43 a little more dramatic version of the chorus

Overall this song is a very sleepy song with no real suspense and only a few intesting parts. I wasn't really in the mood for it, but I liked it. It's a bit too mellow compared to what I usually listen to, but it is a good song.

Pros: Good lyrics. Good sounding guitar. OK guitar riffs. Decent drums.

Cons: Waaaay too mellow throughout the whole song. Boring solos near the end.

I give this song a 7 out of 10.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes more mellow rock.

Killswitch Engage - Take this oath

I've heard this name being mentioned a lot, but I haven't actually heard them.

Starts with distorted guitar, suprise surprise.

Vocals come in, hardcore screaming. Some double bass drumming, not too bad. A new riff starts, this one is better than the opening riff, yeah I like this riff.
Some clean vocals now, melodic riff. Not bad, not bad.

I'm not really a very big fan of this metalcore vocals, but it's ok. There's a typical metalcore breakdown now, this is pretty nice, the riffs are all a bit similar though. Clean vocals over the breakdown, some build up to the intro riff and there we go again.

The songs ends, I didn't really expect a solo and I was right. Would have been nice though.

This wasn't a bad song, had some nice moments, but nothing special. I'd give it a 7/10.

Recommended for Metalcore fans, probably. :)

I've heard of Darkthrone before, but never heard them before... :)
So here goes it:

Darkthrone - Where Cold Winds Blow

The song starts out with some very fast drumming, and almost immeadiately the vocalist starts his screaming. A nice, thick growl. The drummer is also very impressive, but it's hard to hear the guitars. Then the lead guitar busts out with a nice riff over the top of the singer. Maybe it's just me straining to hear them, but from now on they seem much more audible... The melody is awesome, a dark, speeding riff that matches the drumming nicely.

After a while (this song goes for 7 minutes), the rhthym changes and slows down, with more of an emphasis on melody. The guitarist plays a fast, heavily distorted solo, which suited me just fine, and the song continues in it's slower state for a short time longer.

All of the sudden, it's a quick progression, and then it goes back to the faster rhthym we heard at the beginning. Near the end, it slows down quite a bit, and consists of powerchords and cymbal crashing. The singer growls another line, and the song soon draws to a close.

My thoughts on this song are varied. I liked the singer's voice, the distortion and the fast drum work, but I felt there wasn't enough melody there to keep me interested in what was coming up. The changes in tempo kept me listening, sure, but it was like I was waiting for the rhthym to change back again, instead of enjoying the music being played. Another thing that bugged me was the singer's habit of being slightly off-time, at least to my ear. I liked his screams, but he held on to them for too long.

However, the song wasn't really that bad. It was quite good from a plain aggresive heavy metal point of view, and that's the most important thing. I'm giving it 7/10. And given the oppurtunity, I would like to listen to some other songs by them, just to see what they do in other songs.

My picks: Haven't changed... I'm too lazy to write a new list. If you can't find them, I'll put some more in.

Australian Crawl - Beautiful People

Being Australian, I've probably heard this somewhere down the line, but I can't really remember it. I don't know it by name, anyway. A familiar sounding riff, which has 70's written all over it comes in. It's pretty good. The vocals come in, they are a bit cheesy. Oh well. He has a pretty bad voice, a pre-requisite if you wish to be a successful rock band in Australia (come on, Bon Scott, this guy, the guy from Jet, Brian Johnson). The pop/rock bridge comes in at about 1:40, I'm waiting for a solo, but instead I get a higher up riff than before. Then it goes all quiet, so you can hear his terrible voice all so clearer. There's not much more I can write, it's difficult to review. So I'll end it here.

6/10. Typical Aussie feel good song. I wouldn't buy the album though.

Woods Of Ypres - Shedding The Deadwood

Well, can I say from the beginning... that this review will have me speaking glowingly of this song. So those who have distate for flowery prose can skip to my recommendations down the bottom.

The song starts with a strummed intro, very reminiscent of '70s hippy rock, with copius pick squeaking, but has a slightly harder edge. The singer then comes in, a monotonous voice, yet full of inflection. It suits the song very well. A heavily distorted chorus links the verses, with the singer soaring above the guitar. The drummer is there, but isn't stealing the show. However, I don't care, as this isn't the sort of song that needs speeding drum rolls.

A second vocalist speaks some lines that I can't decipher, and the second verse comes to an end. The distortion begins again... and stays for a while. The song doesn't bring up anything too new... but as before, I'm enjoying the singer and melody too much to be bothered. The "talker" says a few more lines, and the original strumming forms a pleasant bridge, before the chorus starts again. The singer really shines in this half of the song, drawing you in, and really letting you feel the emotion of the song. The song slows down and fades away suddenly, but not so fast as too ruin it.

In conclusion... I really enjoyed that song... from beginning to end. I must check out the band, if they can produce other songs as good as this one.
I give it 9.5/10.

Ok, so we all know Rammstein is German... so of course the song I downloaded was in german (I didn't want no crappy English dub version).

But, my next door neighbour, from Austria, was visiting my mother when I was playing it. So I asked her to give me the gist of what they were saying.
Engel is German for Angel, and the chorus for this song is "God knows I don't want to be an angel", and the song revolves around how lonely an angel's life is...

Bearing that in mind, here we go:

Rammstein - Engel

The song starts with a eerie whistle. After the first movement, a heavy bass line begins. The third movement signals the start of the guitars, all playing variations on the original song. The distortion is not too heavy, not too light. The singer begins, in a clear voice, singing about being good on Earth. Then a female vocalist sings about the plight of angels. The verse ends with the male vocalist singing the chorus I mentioned above, which is actually very catchy, and fits into the song really well.

In the background you can hear all the techno elements that make up a good Rammstein song, as well as a pounding bass line. The guitar has a nice heavy riff they play though. The song starts into the second verse, then launches into another chorus. All is going well, and then they have an interlude. The interlude fits in, but they seem to be focusing more on the techno elements than the metal, and that doesn't sit well with me.

When the interlude ends, we get a repeat of the first chorus, then a few powerchords later the song fades back to the eerie whistle heard at the start.

In the end, I felt there was something lacking in the song. I wanted there to be more Metal, and maybe a solo, but instead got a crappy sample by the turntablist. Ahh well, the rest of the song was cool, and I really liked how the lyrics sounded in German. So I'm giving it 7.5/10.

Okay, the only song I ever heard from these guys was TNT (from my THPS addicted times)

AC/DC - Big Balls

This is good song, especially if you want to laugh a bit.

It starts with a riff ascending and descending, and at the same time, one very simple lick to link the chords by one of the Youngs.
And the voice enters, it's pretty amusing, (here starts the laughing part) he plays with that riff a bit, while singing.
And it starts (the "chorus" if you can call that) and i got one thing to say: "I've got big balls!"

That's pretty much what he says in the whole music... The lyrics go all around his big balls, and after this short chorus, the music just repeats itself with no interest at all.....

And here was i, thinking i would hear some old-hard-rock solo, and....

Poof, disappointed...

But the song has proved it's value in the issue of amusement.

What did I think? Well, it's not a song/music that you can be addicted the whole day through, but I heard it a couple of times and although it's not very musically compelling, it has it's fun!

Would I listen more? Well, AC/DC are not one of my favourite bands, but, even still i'd hear some... but just because I was impressed with TNT, not with this song, this is sooo.... different, i think. But I would hear... sometime, with more patience.

Rating: It is not bad at all, even if repetitive... T_T so, here it goes: 6,5/10

AC/DC fans... you can flame me.

strats off with amazing piano
at 0:20 guitar and drums kick in, didn't expect that.
at 0:45 a great fusion between guitar and piano, sounds awesome.
bass really gives more atmosphere to it all.
1:47 a metal par begins now, guitar takes over now.
2:05 something solo like gets started.
amazing piano comes in again at 3:00 *I love it!*
3:20, guitar takes over.
I still here some keys in the background ( I think), but its syntheziser.
3:40 the music gets rahter jazzy, cool :)
and low sounding piano is back in this part.
3:55 some solo, sounds bluessy/jazzy like, but I like it.
I really like the bass supporting thhe solo in this part.
4:15, keys again, sounds funny.
great bass again supporting the piano.
4:45 the jazzy part ends, and it flows into something that;s more dream theater style
5:30 wow this is really dreamy music, love it.
5:48 synths come in again.
6:15 petrucci does what he's best at, great solo.
after the solo part, a nice bridge towards the end.

what can I say
I'm amazed

opinion:
at first I thought were is the singing, but it's instrumental :p

Ah, back in the forced listening loop!
Opeth - The Apostle in Triumph

Starts off with a nice acoustic strumming intro, along with a acoustic solo that sounds alot like a chapman stick for some reason.

At about 1:30 there is a new acoustic riff going on, it's very melodic with some jazzy drums going on in the background.

At 2:00 the electric guitars come in playing the same melodic lick from 1:30. Sounds awesome here. The song progresses along keeping the same melodic feel.

At about 3:00 the song goes back to clean, along with bass and drums. A slow little solo shows up (sounds like a harmonic minor scale.)

At about 3:45 the song finally picks up and i hear some long needed vocals, along the expecting melody from Opeth and some decent kick drum action.

At about 5:12 the music slows down a bit, staying melodic before picking up again at 5:43 with some nice kick drum action again.

At about 6:07 the song takes a turn for the obscure, i enjoy this along with some extreme growling from Akerfeldt.

At about 7:26 this song gets extremely cool, it sounds like the guitars have a fade in effect on, and they are playing it extremely fast, along with some kickin bass lines and acoustic strumming.

At about 8:30 the song gets back to electric guitar melody mode, along with some killer clean vocals (I wish i could sing like this.) The singing eventually turns into growling, good stuff.

At about 9:35 there is a nice guitar solo making for some killer harmonies.

At about 10:20 we finally here some guitar chords played with distortion, still slow, along with some awesome growling before returning to a nice solo, nothing fast but fits well.

About 12:20 the acoustic guitar comes back in, accompanied by clean vocals, the song ends on this.

This song gets a 10/10 i loved it, awesome guitar work, great vocals both clean and screamed. Great stuff.

Is all of Opeth's stuff like this? I've heard Masters Apprentice and it wasn't even close to like this. On that note, what is Opeth's best album?

Would i check out more? I plan to.

Death - Spirit Crusher

Only thing I've heard from Death is Voice of the Soul(which rocked), so I've got high hopes. I've also heard that they the band that started death metal so mucho respect.

Starts with just bass and drums. After a short while the guitars and vocals come in, the guy is sort of screaming, and its pretty good. Guitars are playing a nice riff with a few pinch harmonics here and there. Drums go over to double bass which is cool.

Song changes pace, its a bit slower now, this is the chorus I think. SPIRIT.... CRUSHER. I like this. After a short while we go over to the re-intro, and then solo guitars, very good part here, fast and melodic.

Solo enters, its fast, very fast, nice harmony here. Then harmonizing guitars enter, before the solo takes off again and fades out. Here comes a heavy riff, nice and headbangable. Drums pick it up a notch here, with some double bass.

The whole song goes fast for a few seconds, then it slows again to the chorus. I'm especially liking the drums here and also the vocals. SPIRIT... CRUSHER. Haha, I love that. Afterwards comes the "disharmonic" riff as I like to call it, then we get some fairly melodic guitar riffing and some cool drum fills. Song ends with a pinch harmonic.

Sorry for not mentioning something about bass, but all it does is follow the guitars, except for the intro and re-intro.

7/10 I liked it, the solo was great and chorus good.

Time for some norwegian metal. And its not Black:amaze:

Lumsk - I trollhender

starts off with a nice riff.
could be doom metal.
0:22 vocals come in, and...... it's a woman!!!!!!
wow, didn’t expect that!
vocals remind me of within temptation, I don't like them.
and what language is she singing? Norwegian or Swedish maybe> I have no clue.
0:45 this is better! strings come in.
and no more singing,
is it strings or keyboard actually? or both?
1:08 the vocalist comes in again, and IMO ruins it.
1:30 again the strings part (love it)
2:33 a heavier riff, it's good.
1:54 just strings now, nothing else, great!
2:05 the rest of the band kicks in again (except the vocals)
2:40 amazing strings again, wow :)
then it fades out.

opinion:

-great song, I love the string parts.
-maybe a bit to repetitive though.
- iuew, sorry, but I despise the vocals, can't stand them.
- nice doomy folky sound

Haven't heard much Dream Theater, but they've always interested me.

Wait For Sleep - Dream Theater

The song starts with a piano intro, and then the singer begins. While he sleeps the pianist strikes some minor chords, which blend nicely with his voice. I can also detect some background guitar (maybe?), but it is very soft, and melodic.

This song is very short, especially for Dream Theater, whom I understand have very long songs. This song only seems to feature a pianist and a vocalist, so I'd imagine that it is interlude off of an album. The song is very pleasant, as the pianist and singer are perfectly matched in tone and rhythm. Interestingly, this song has no real verse/chorus structure, but instead seems to be a string of verses of various lengths. However it doesn't feel put together at all. The song ends with the piano doing a nice little outro.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this song. My only qualm was that it was to short. Other than that, it was a very good, relaxing kind of song. I would like to hear more songs of the same album, to see how they tie the guitars and drums in with the pianist (keyboardist?), however.

I give it 9/10.

Fort(e) - In A New Light

I have been meaning to check out this band for quite a while as they've play up here before and I'm yet to see them.

Rumbling guitar intro.
Then guitar doing those melodic power add2 chords. Then another one comes with drums in and, hey, it's a rock riff! I think they double up and the first guitar goes into wah territory.
Bass guitar and thumping bass drum with hi hat... it reminds me of another song... or a few other songs. The vocalist(s) have a bit of a dry voice, but not quite dry.

Then this is the chorus, guitars are back, and it's a bit more melodic, harder. Sounds like pretty straightforward modern rock to me... like Foo Fighters.

Verse 2, well it's nearly the same but the drum pattern includes snare and some more. Same voice, different words.

The chorus music again, but no singing. Well, this is not totally as straightforward as it could be, which is good.
Here we have a sort of trippy bridge with guitar pan effects, that sound cool in headphones, and a wah-y non-solo. Busts back into the power add2 chords rock. The other guitar wah's it some more.

Chorus again, seems maybe harder than before. The second time around one guitar is doing some high notes. And a scream to cap it all off.

Well, I'm one to be impressed by trickiness and other shenanigans, this song didn't have very much of that. It was pretty straightforward rock, though not totally sticking to the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus (VCVCBCC) thing, close to it though.
I liked the fact that the 2 guitars did play different things from time to time, even if the lead guitar was really simple, it's still better than mirroring. The wah effect was good, making for diversity in the music. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't "WOW".

7/10 - I'd still see them, just as long as another band I liked was playing too.

Porcupine Tree - How Is Your Life Today?

I've never heard any PT before. I know them through various prog sites I've visited, and by the Opeth connections.

This song, with the harmonized vocals, piano chords, and dreamy vocals, is very Beatles-esque. Sgt. Peppers-era, for certain. Just to push the point, the sound of a fairground appears halfway through. Oh dear. To be honest, this just reminds me of Rollercoaster Tycoon.

Other than sounding like The Beatles, the song basically flies past without doing a great deal. The melody is good, but unmemorbale. The harmonies and effected vocals add to the song, but don't make up for the excitement and uniqueness it so obviously lacks. Nice enough, but it's not something I'll be listening to much in the future.

I should add, I'd probably have enjoyed this song a lot more if I was under the infleunce of some illegal substance, but I'm not, and I wasn't impressed.

Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal

Oh yeah, starts off with a scream of METAAAAAL!

riff comes in, with some whispering
00:28 nice lead guitar with wah, the songs great already
00:48, slow with the same heavy riff, its the verse now, he has a good voice
still going on
01:12, chorus, still slow paced, palm muting
a shout of 'in my book of heavy metal!' takes us bk to the verse riff, its the chorus though i think lol
back to 2nd verse, meh not too big a fan of these slow paced songs but its alright
02:28 Bridge, a distorted voice speaking of the begining of metal or a war or something
02:51 - ah yes, the speed is up with a solo..just what the song needed, these guys have some skill

03:10 - high singing, backing singing, new riff,
03:35 - Drums out for a bit, another verse, but the drums come back after a few seconds
04:03 - back to chorus..not too fond of the chorus
continuing, with a nice lead guitar soloing over :)
song fades out

Im not too fond of these slow paced type of songs, but i would give it 6/10, it dragged on but it picked up halfway through which was good, a bit repetitive.
I'll check out some more sometime..not a big priority now though

Nightwish - The Wayfarer

before I begin, I'm absolutly not in to nightwish, but I thought I might pick this one to change my mind, so sorry if it;s not completley objective.

ok, now for the song :p

alright, it goes off at the second I pushed play, getting flowed by sound, what is this what I hear? a second guitar or keys.
0:28 the singer starts to sing, but I don't like her vocals.
nice, yet simple guitar underneath the vocals.
0:43 an instrumental piece, keys again?
0:58 vocals enter.
1:12, some higher singing, this sounds better, but still not my thing.
1:50, some change in the instrument part, this sounds way better :) .
it's a bit heavier.
2:05 vocals come in again.
music slows down.
and slowe singing.
kick drums take in more space, gives a good sound to the song, it fits.
vocal parts repeated till the song fades out.

hm my thoughts:

- can't help it, but I hate the vocals, maybe I just don't like female vocals
- guitar and drumming are quite ok, but I find it confusing, do I hear lots of keys, or is it a second guitar with strange effects?
- drags on too long for my feeling.
- nice instrumental parts, I think they would be better as a instrumental band.
- they sound like they want to be dream theater, lot of parts just sound like bad rip-offs of DT ( which doesn't make it bad, cause DT is just a great level, and this is quite some below that level, but stiil good :p)

score: 5/10
I hate the vocals, the rest is ok though.

would I check out more of this band?

no, I won't, I thought I'd broaden my tastes a bit, but no, I still don't like them.

Symphony X - The Accolade II

Starts with a cool piano intro, and some strings (Symphony is in their name, after all). It's all very pretty. The piano goes a bit madcore in places. At about :47, some heavy bits come in. I like the guitar tone. Technicality in its non pretentious form! I love it. The strings are great in this intro thing. 1:40, the drums pick up. Soon after ,the vocals come in, this guy is one of my favourite singers, every Symphony X effort I've liked them. The chorus is slower, anthemic. Another verse, I've noticed the piano in the background, it's cool as. Another chorus now. Now there's a piano, by itself, and now vocals. Now a guitar solo, a soulful one, it's great. There's only about 10 notes in the whole solo, but it's cool. Now this weird interlude thing, which I like a lot. After a bit more instrumentation, there's a cool, fast guitar solo. I think there was some sweep picking in there, somewhere. Now, another guitar solo, this one's distorted, fast, and awesome. After that, there's a chorus, with lots of background singers. A fitting end, to an awesome song.

9/10.

Celtic Frost - Into the Crypts of Rays (Black metal)

I'm not a fan of black metal, but I thought I'd give it a try.

in the first second or so, you hear some chanting, but I guess that's from the previous song on the cd or so? (poor production?) although it doesn't even sound bad.

than a gothic like riff begins, but after a few seconds, it's clearly no gothic riff anymore.

heavy guitars, make for a nice sound ( I actually like this, allthough I haven't heard any vocals yet )
0:12 drums drop, and there is just guitars.
0:14 drums kick in again.
0:17 vocals come in  have I dowloaded the correct song?, no high pitched screams, sounds like trashy vocals, hm this sounds more like early metallica than black metal.. ;)
0:45, I clearly herar the bassline now, and it's quite worth listening to .
0:50 vocals come in again.
1:15 if you haven't heard the title of the song now, you must be deaf, this gets kind of repetitive.
1:23 ditorted guitar riff, no drums.
1:26 a very catchy beat begins :) .
1:55 now begins a nice guitar part.
2:14 a solo I like it, though it's short.
2:30 vocals again. song goes along nicely
3:30 a nice different guitar part, I would Like that to last longer, but the song is nearly at it's end.

THE END!!! :p

hm opinion.

- have I downloaded the right song? or is all of celtic frost like this, this was rather good.
- no BM vocals?
- guitars sound great
-nice drumming, not difficult, but fitting.
- too bad the solo is only so short :upset:
- lots of links with early metallica, IMO.
- nice vocals.
- lyrics get repetitive though

will I check out more? if all of CF is like this, I will.
so can anybody tell me, is all of CF with those lyrics?
thanks.

In Flames - Jotun

I've heard most of In Flames work, but not this one and the name got my interest.

Starts off with some regular In Flames riffing, heavy rhythm and melodic leads. Goes over in some faster, almost tremolo style picking on the E string(or C or D:p). Vocals start normal, then they go over into the standard Gothenburg growl, guitars are ripping it up in the background, drums are good, but sadly almost no bass.

New riff, and a heavily reverbed guitar enters and plays a spaced out lead, this is very good. Back into the clean verse, then over to the growled part, which is very good, he has a deep growl which I think is cool. The guitars are very melodic.

Now comes a galloping riff, very headbangable, sadly its only a bridge over to the growled verse. Solo enters now, it follows the main theme, a bit short but its good. Song fades out.

6.5/10 It was good, but In Flames can do so much better.

Here is some metal:

After a lot of effort I finally found a song. Here it is:

Susperia - Chemistry

The song starts out with a rolling intro, which repeats itself while the drumming and power chords begin. Sort of a mix between Thrash and Nu-metal. Then the melody changes to a more aggresive sound full of thrashy goodness. After a short while the singer comes in, with a voice that sounds reminiscent of Slayer. I'm guessing these guys have a real thrash influence. (Just a hunch... )

The lyrics seem pretty silly, I'm guessing they relate to drugs. The songs chorus is basically the same as the verse, so it sounds pretty repetitive. Then we get treated to the intro being played as the bridge. A sort of solo gets played a short while later; I say sort of as it's basically the lead playing a variation on the intro a bit higher. Then the power chords come crashing down, and the song ends...

My thoughts: This song was pretty much Thrash inspired Nu-Metal all the way. It wasn't bad... but I don't think I'll be in a rush to find more of their work. I give it 6.5/10

My Picks:

ok, The Jester Race, In Flames

Pretty cool intro with some melodious guitar over some heavy riffs

Nice voacals, and very catchy lead riffs, very true to the melodic side of death metal.

I love the riffs to this song. Kind of mediocre chorus though.

Now a cool bridge part, with some more cool riffs. Now everythng just seems to be repeating.

Oh no wait, theres a weird synth voice thingy in the middle of it. Now theres a solo. Pretty good stuff, again very melodic.

Finishes strong with awsome riffs and growls. Then stops. Really cool, this is the only In Flames cd I havn't heard anythng from. I definately want to check it out.

Porcupine Tree - Signify

Sorry for the delay, unforseen events arose. Song begins with a solo guitar riff, slightly fuzzy tone. Synthesised strings threaten to enter, but this is merely the cue for the rhythm section to enter. They enter at the same time, drums follow the rhythm of the guitar, while bass plays the root note in a similar rhythm. Synthesised strings again enter, slowly becoming louder. Backwards guitar now enters, playing leads. Same guitar now reverts to normal.

At 2:12 the strings become louder, leading into a momentary change in tempo, before the song reverts to its main theme. Computers become more involved now, synthesised guitar solo, I think. Brief coda, and the song ends abruptly. I liked it OK, but it's not something I'd have the patience to listen to regularly.

5/10.

Motley Crue - Primal Scream

Nothing like some hair metal. OK, the song starts out with a steady drum beat, and then kicks into an '80s Hair Metal fest of power chords, etc. The vocalist comes in, singing some of the cheesiest lyrics I've ever heard. (Even Manowar pales compared to this. :p )

The chorus doesn't really differ from the verses, just a different melody over the same power chords. The solo is fun, but hardly earth shattering. I like this song though. There isn't much to say about it, as it's your average, cheesy Hair Metal song, but I'm a sucker for these types of songs. Everything might be basic, but it blends together well.

I'm giving it 7/10. Add 1 if you are drinking beer while you listen. Add 1 if you have a mullet. I might listen to some more if I came across it.

I could only find Manowar on a modem connection, and I haven't got all day. So looks like it's Silverchair for me.

Silverchair - Suicidal Dreams

Lovely name for a song. Not attention seeking or depressing at all.

The intro is trademark sub-Alice In Chains grunge. Nothing new here. The vocals of the singer (he married to Natalie Imbruglia, right?) are like a whinier Eddie Vedder. The melody's not bad.

The verse merges monotonously into the chorus - if he didn't sing the song title, I'd never know it was the chorus at all. The lyrics are stanard grunge fare too.

I have a name for stuff like this - Dawson's Creek Grunge. Or, even, Generic Teen Movie Soundtrack Grunge.

It ends with feedback and a pick scrape. And we're done. This song could easily have been written and peformed by a college band in their 3rd week together. Nothing to recommend it, unless you're a complete grunge affaciando and need to own everything from the genre.

4/10.

Shame, because I quite enjoyed Anthem For The Year 2000.

Queensryche - I don't believe in love

I've heard some of Queensryche and it reminds me of Hammerfall, which is a good thing.

Intro starts with two guitars, soon the bass enters with a galloped riff. After a few seconds the song goes calm, with clean guitars.

The vocalist has a good voice and he is on key, the song is about someone who lost a girl that loved him, but he didn't realize that before its too late. The lyrics are actually well written, even though it sounds like a cliché.

The chorus is pretty heavy, but slow. Drums are simple but they suit the song well. The guitars have light distortion and the riff is fairly complicated.

A solo enters, its fast and melodic. He is running high on the fret board, it sounds good. Soon a harmonized guitar enters and they finish off the solo together.

Back to the chorus.

The song ends with a breakdown of sorts.

The song was good, I really enjoyed it. 7/10

Children Of Bodom - Kissing The Shadows

Wow. This song doesn't start with any sort of intro it just goes bang. I like the beginning, nice double pedal drumming and a nice riff above it. The lyrics that start at about 0:33 are heavy growls, not my favorite but tolerable. I can tell that the band is really talented and I like the musical part of it. The lyrics dont do much for me - really only because I cant tell what the person is saying at all.

The keyboard part is cool, the little solo is sweet, followed by a cool shredding solo by the guitarist. A long solo, it's been going on for over a minute now - the guitarist is really talented...the solo reminds me of a Petrucci solo in a way.

Would I listen to it again? Maybe: the lyrics don't do it for me, the music is not bad. I'd say a 6/10 for this one.

0:00 starts with heavy guitar line sort of like bass, it is the tempo for the song. like duh duh duh duh sort of
0:09.9 or so guitar solo 1 starts, not really a guitar solo, but fast and it is more of an extension to the song reminiscent of Michael Angelo 16th and 32nd notes in No Boundaries 0:30 2nd guitar comes in with 1st guitar to double w/ 1st on solo
0:38 solo ends.
0:41.7 or so vocals come in. they sound 80ish. some parts w/ lots of vibrato and harmonized vocals. reminiscent of Cemetery Gates.
0:56 more vocals but now w/ background vocals w/ a spooky feel sounds like "oooooooooooh!!"
1:03 singer by himself, then w/ lower pitched voice(lower-middle range) doubling with singer then with choir sounding part.
1:12 chorus: different singing style now. sort of like backstreet boys. not gay sounding w/ 5 voices but a more pop style sound to it. i find these more appealing w/ this type of music.
1:28 really short 2nd guitar solo starts in 1:36 solo ends and in comes vocals, vocals are back to 80's type
1:50 back w/ that ooooh stuff
2:05 chorus: back w/ that backstreet stuff
2:19 3rd guitar solo this is the big one.
2:40 sounds like it switched to a 2nd guitar if there is a 2nd or a keyboard . i don't know anything about this band. it's starting to sound like a keyboard. i don't know though
3:00 chorus this last part of the song has a lot more backstreet boy sounding parts to it. has a lot of parts with several vocals going on at one time i thing
4:06 it ends. i'm not sure when it ends because it closed before i could check it

rating:
guitars: 8.9/10
vocals: 9.6/10
keyboard: 8.9/10

Ether - Nothingface

Song starts with a short guitar riff, then about a 5 -7 seconds afterward the vocalist comes in. It gets heavier with some pretty good drums and guitar. Gets a little harder, and goes back to the guitar riff from the start. Goes into the chorus after that. Goes into a different guitar riff after second chorus then repeats through the rest of the song.

Overall these guys i enjoyed listening to. Kinda reminded me of chevelle.
I would give it an 8/10. If i had the oppertunity i would listen o them more.

Crossfade - Starless

This is a curious track, i haven't heard much like it before. It combines various styles of rock and metal, it's very different.

It opens with a slow heavy riff and drums creating an abrasiveness thats sounds fit for a doom metal track. This finishes with an abrupt break then the verse kicks in, its fairly soft and the guitars and singer make it sound like nickelback with a smile empty soul vibe. This guy sounds like Chad Kroeger and mixed with James Hetfield (Load/Reload era) not sounding too bad at all suprisingly and the guitars are sexy. The prechorus features a droning distorted guitar that comes out of nowhere, with something a bit like a coal chamber type buzz effect on it. The chorus then hits in and it is a very typical rock chorus indeed, recalls creed type power chords but with a better singer. It then drops back into that sludgy intro riff as a break, after this the guy starts singing/rapping over the verse riff. It is a lot better then i can describe it, after this that prechorus buzz thing happens and then it drop back into the chorus. After this it cuts to a whispered effect over the guys voice as he says, 'i got to get you out of my pain' where he really sounds like Hetfield, then he sings something similar out loud as a second chorus of sorts. After this a bit more singing/rapping lol, then into the chorus one last time. Ends with that brutal riff. Awesome stuff.

Its a very formulaic type rock song but it has a lot of interesting parts and effects you don't usually hear mixed in this type of rock. I am impressed. 8/10

symphony X - Smoke and Mirrors

heard quite some SX, but hadn't heard this one, so here goed

starts off with insane guitaring, as we're used to from SX, at about 0:16 it slows down a bit
0:32 speed goes up.
great keyboarding :thumb:
0:48, almost a DT sounding riff.
1:03 vocals come in, and remind me it's not DT (both have great vocals though)
wow, his voice sounds some much more powerfull than on other songs.
nice symphonic singing parts in between.
3:33 all slows down and the keys take in more room, bass line is nice as well.
actualy it's a slow guitar soloing part, but I think the other instruments come out better.

4:14, this is what I've been waiting for, a solo, a real solo!

which lasts till 5:23
singing comes in again.

5:55 you hear it's coming to and end, and it fades out with some weird sounding effect on the end.

what can I say?
wow

it just blew me out of the water, what a talent

never heard the vocalist using his voice so agressive though, but I like it :)
some parts do just sound like the're ripped off of DT, but it's not that bad

I am pleasently suprised with this song. It begins as a simple yet gorgeous piano piece that has a melancholic vice to it. Then the rest of the band comes in, jangly guitar, bass and drums heightening the beauty, **** this is nice. Its got strange lyrics that remind me slightly of Radiohead, and moves along at a lovely pace. There's not a great deal of variety to this song except for the music and a few breaks in between but thats never a bad thing if it's stretching a good idea. 0:28 the song get going now, vocals come in, bass and drums al doing what they're supposed to do.
I like Cornell's voice, atleast in audioslave,, I haven'theard much of soundgarden.
1:11 the song seems to get busier, but it sounds better, like there is more sound
the song structure changes a bit as well.
sounds like 2 voices, or just cornell's but times 2, or I'm mistaking, but anyways it sounds cool.
1:34 the song returns to where it started.
1:42 vox again.
guitaring sounds great now
2:15 dubble vocals again.
2:37 a guitar solo,I don't really like it, sounds too random for me.
3:45 other instruments fade somewhat to the background, and vocals take over.
and than, with a yell it ends.

so:

- nice guitaring
- didn't like the solo
- I love audible basslines, so that's was great.
- the song is a bit too long IMO, it drags on some what.
- nice vocal harmonies
- you gotta love his voice.
- I still prefer audioslave over this.
- nice driving music, me thinks

score:

3,8/5

Dark Tranquility - Final Resistance.

I've heard this song before but its really good along with most dark tranq

Anyway
It starts off with guitars low to high building up with a melodic style in the back

0:16- the main riff comes in.
the verse is technical and very melodic and the chorus comes back in
followed by another interlude...and another interlude...i like how it dosent have to repeat over and over...
1:31 - a nice keyboard comes in and sounds mellow...then picked right back up by the melody of the guitars and into the final verse...and keeps repeating the chorus until it ends..i wish there was a solo but oh well
i give this song a 7/10

Dream Theatre - Fatal Tragedy

The song starts off with a creepy piano riff with the singer's voice quietly singing over top. At about 0:40 the guitar and drums kick in with with a slow distorted riff it sounds almost like a glam rock type vibe. The vocals are high and melodic. At 2:15 their is a change in tempo and the keyboardist starts to use effects. The guitaritst is constantly weaving in and around the drums and vocals with very interesting and impressive thrash riffs. The singer cahnges to a high pitched yelp at about 2:50 which was a little annoying. At 3:50 the song strucure cahges completely going into this progressive metal almost experimental section. The vocals are taken out and the keyboards, percussion, and guitars play totally off of each other in this technically outstanding passage. They take turns soloing and come together to produce some wicked melodies. At 4:40 the solo bursts in and starts off sounding very dirty yet technical and it sounds amazing. The keyboardist also does a very impressive solo which lasts almost to the end of the song. The drumming never gets boring or old, through out the song it has some very nice fills and plenty of douple bass. The song ends with a repeating chilly repeating piano chord and a voice saying "now it is time to see how you die. remember that death is not the end but only a transition" The lyrics are interesting, they seem to be about a murder of a young girl. Neat stuff. I was really impressed with the latter part of this song, too much soloing and technicality can get boring but they pull it off splendidly.

Opeth - To Bid You Farewell (10:57)

The song starts with some pretty slow medievel sounding guitars, then the tempo slowly starts picking up, around 2 mins the bass joins in, and around 3 the drums join in, then at about 5 minutes the singing starts. Each verse has a very deep meaning and is followed by about 2 minutes of instrumental.
I am awaiting the sunrise
Gazing modestly through the coldest morning
Once it came you lied
Embracing us over
Autumn's proud treetops
Once you get to the 4th verse they bust out a solo, and the music starts getting metalish (vaguely) and then Akerfeldt starts singing again. It's the only song on Morningrise where Akerfeldt doesn't grunt and it's the best on the album (my opinion).

Korn - Good God (Alternative-Metal)

Skyhooks – Smut.

Starts with a cool intro, after 2 seconds the song starts of.
With a very rockish/blues-ish sound
At 0:10 vocals, weird, funny, this guy doesn’t have a voice for singing IMO.
Funny lyrics though.
0:17 more voices. ‘ahaaaaah!, haaahaa, ahaaaaaahahahaah’.
0:23 the horrible vocalist again.
0:38, vocals with some women’s voice on the background.
043 a woman’s voice taking over.
2:34, some Spanish sounding, what’s their name, those shaking instruments:p .
3:15 the song goes back to where it was in the beginning, it’s strats to get a bit boring now :(
The song takes the same elements as before, and repeats them till the song ends at 5:15

So:
Meh, I hate the vocals, all of them.
Nice drum and guitar and bass work, this should be an instrumental band, than I would like them

The song gets repetitive and the change of vocals annoys me, as I can’t focus on any.
Funny lyrics though :p
Score: 2,5/5

Will I check out more?
Only if they have some instrumentals

My picks:

war is a crazy, crazy song. meshuggah's sound, coupled with the speed of that song created a totally unique sound. think industrial thrash. (i hope thats reasonably accurate.) the solo (1:50) is the weirdest sounding one ive heard, but it...fits.
vocals might annoy some, but they dont overpower the music at all.
overall length - 2:40

i choose:
the clay people (static-x, slipknot& disturbed)- awake
down - teptation's wings
napalm death - diatribes

I've heard a couple of MDB songs before, so I know vaguely what to expect. I liked them too, so I somewhat expect to like this.
My Dying Bride - Your Shameful Heaven - 6:59

Starts off with just violin.

I love violin.

Hurrah for this song. It's not playing particularly slowly, but plenty mournfully, so it's suitably MDBish. Just after the minute mark, low, grinding guitars and the rest of the band, come in, including vocals. The vocalist sounds completely different to what I've heard before. It's actually more or less the same, but less smooth/stable, and slightly (almost) cracking towards the end of lines.

Anyway, around 2:20, the vocals cut out and a really cool chugging riffing section comes in for about 15 seconds. Very nice, though not as slow as I would have though.

"Pain is everything". Definitely an MDB song.

Violin comes back to back what I assume is the chorus, though other than that it's different, there's not much that would alert me to its being the chorus. Not a bad song though, so far.

Pretty much everything drops away at 4:30, for just some bass to play. Ah, a screech of guitar and the guitars come in to play the same rhythm as the bass was. Now that was cool

It's getting into it's end stages now. Another chorusy bit, though without violin, which okay but nothing great. However, the guitar keeps spiralling off on few-second long mini-solos, which is, again, just cool.

Overall, a good song. I didn't like the vocals as much as I have before, and at times it didn't sound very doomy at all, but I liked the guitar, and a I liked the violin.

Artists: earthtone 9
Song: Revelation
Genre: British metal
Length:5:55

I've never herd any earthtone 9 before and it's not as heavy as I was expecting (I don't know why I just thought it would be really heavy). It cuts in with a really cool intro riff and then it goes quiet except the guitar abd then breaks out with the singer starting. Unfortunately, I really liked the singers style. After a while it kicks into the chorus which is was very quiet. The song repeats this cycle over and iver again going slow then fast, slow then fast and gets a bit repetitive. Although, at the end it builds and builds into a huge climax.

A bit repetitive but overall a very good song
