Tiger Army - Incorporeal (2:40)
OK, I've actually heard this CD and seen the band live, but I have very few specific memories, so...
There's a build-up of feedback before the band dives in. I can't remember if they have a double-bassist or not, but it sounds like one is being used here however low in the mix it is. There's two guitars. The main one is playing straightforward powerchords which reminds me of the Misfits/AFI, as do the vocals which from the first note remind me both of Davey Havok and Glenn Danzig. I like his vocals, he has character, though from what I've heard he seems to be a Davey Havok wannabe.
It's a short song, so there's not really much to say. The vocal melody reminds me of "Lost In Space" by the Misfits, though that song features Michale Graves on vocals and not Danzig, despite my earlier comparison. I recommend you find that song, as it's a similar style and tune. The vocals are a bit OTT, he's trying very hard, which makes it hard to pick out the lyrics but it's not a huge problem. The lyrics are probably gibberish anyway, look at the title. Props for the rockabilly guitar fills, too. Brian Setzer++

Davey Havok does a lot of backing vocals on that album, so he might have done some on that song as well. And they use stand up bass, yeah. I'll find that song, they're obviously big misfits fans and good friends with AFI. Glad you liked it.

The Coral - Simon Diamond
I got it because Superpeer said the other one was interesting.
There is a western sounding fingerpicked acoustic guitar to start with, some strange vocal harmonies. Singing about a guy called Simon who sold his soul. Trippy slide guitar with echo and some moody "Oooh". Snare drum builds up as this section is ending.
Hey cool, it gets a 60s vibe with the organ, and theres a banjo playing a circus big top musical theme. Such a strange combination, and it works. Seems Simon has become a tree. The verses are short and sweet, followed by the trippy bit.
In the middle (which came around quite fast), we get a bit sea-shanty like going "What will become of Simon Diamond", similar to the drunken sailor song. It's a bit faster than before. Followed by some more of the trippy stuff.
The last part is the main extended western music, with added sax, and a call and response of "That'll do" as it fades out. How bloody weird was that?
It's only 2:30 but there was a lot to say about it. I commend these guys on putting totally unrelated styles together, and making it work. It was hard to get into instantly, but that shouldn't be a bad thing. The lyrics were probably as strange as the music. I like it, I want more.

Well I found a link to this one by going to http://www.alltheweb.com and searching for them in Audio. It's far from fool-proof, but it gives success now and then.
I've heard quite a bit about these guys, but haven't actually heard anything by them so far.
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash - 5:49
Starts off with some simple acoustic guitar. Might just be the quality of the file I've got, but it sounds a little raw, almost fuzzy, but in a good way, I like it.
The rest of the instruments kick in togather, along with the vocals. At first I thought there were two vocalists singing the lines together at the same time, but after a while that seems not to be the case. It's got a very easy-going, lilting feel to it so far. I can make out some of the lyrics, but not all of them, especially as I'm not really paying attention to the lyrics, as I'm typing. The song slows down for a while, with the guitar doing what I'd probably call "chugging", if it didn't sound like an acoustic. Allows the vocals to be a bit more prominent (despite being fairly prominent to begin with). There's a very faint shout in the background too, repeating a word of the line being sung. Strange.
Everything I've just described repeats itself once over - the verse and then the chorus - and then a whole new bit begins. I really like this bit; the bass becomes more noticeable, and is playing a very nice, smooth, catchy bassline. The guitar(s) are doing their own thing now, and I like it, all the way through. It lasts a good couple of minutes, right up to the end of the song (the vocals don't make another appearance) but it's interesting all the way through. Very good.
Well, for most of the song I was thinking that while there was nothing really wrong with it, it was kind of a 5/10 non-entity, but that end section raises it quite a bit. If I were rating them separately, the end would get quite a high score, but as I'm not;

Frou Frou - Let Go (4:13)
I only know Frou Frou through a couple of random, but nice, tracks and Jeff Beck's version of "Rollin' & Tumblin'", on which the singer guests. My WMP shows the album cover and I'm disappointed to find that she's not as blonde as her voice had led me to believe.
This one will be difficult to describe in any meaningful way. The song kinda drifts in, there's some light electronic sounds which kinda "violin" in, e.g. get progressively louder. Synthesised strings then come in and the singer goes about her thing. She sounds like Dido crossed with Raine Maida (of Our Lady Peace, for the uninitiated). Her voice objectively resembles Dido's, but she has a different singing style, and I don't have the vocabulary to say why that is. Like Raine Maida, though, she often dips in and out of falsetto style, which is a vocal effect I love.
The vocal melody, on which the whole piece is pretty much centered, is beautiful, understated, soothing and very difficult to go into any detail about. I really like her voice, as I've mentioned. All that's left to say is that the music is suitably sparse and spacious to allow the singer the room she demands. The arrangement is very nice, composed of little more than piano, synth and quick but light drum machine action. Nice. 8/10.

Sting & The Chieftans - Mo Ghile Mear (Our Hero)
I like what I've heard of Sting/The Police, and celtic music too.
Starts with a lone soldier sings a melodic line from atop a mountain, must be in celtic language. Then the same line is repeated with a few brave men singing in a nice harmony with skin drums beating slowly. It's not wartime though, maybe the soldiers are returning home because the music is all happy and joyous and Frodo Baggins like.
Folky strummed guitar with a flute starts playing, I think its Sting singing, in English now. Very simple folk tale music, and I do like it. The verse is short, and the chorus is the celtic harmony that was sung at the beginning.
This reminds me of a Rod Stewart song.. Sailing, might go get that soon.
Well the story goes on, singing about a hero and all the good things he has done, that probably should be obvious given the title. The verses and choruses stay pretty much the same, with the exception of more instruments like fiddle and bagpipes.
In the middle the chorus music is played instrumentally, but that's not much different to what happens already.. so yeah. A few times later it's finished.
somehow I think it would be really funny to have a sample at the end with
"Do we really have to go all the way to Mordor?"
"Yes Sam."
But I digress... often.
Nice sound, too repetitive though, though I don't know how I would change it if I could (except the end). Didn't really stnad out as much as I thought it would. So....

Glad you liked the Frou Frou song. Her voice is one of the main attractions for me, too.
Never heard of them before.
Three Second Memory - The Scorpion and the Frog - 5:46
A few seconds (three, maybe?) of near-silent build-up, and then some rather nice acoustic-y bits to lead into the song. The vocalist - or someone, anyway - is whispering in amidst this veritable miniature forest of acoustic picking (which has now been joined by occasional stabs of heavier sound, in the background). This does mean I can't quite make out what he's saying most of the time, but I've picked up his sense of urgency. I don't know what to do with it, but it's making for a great build-up so far; I like it.
A pause for some repetitive cymbal work, and then the vocalist starts his whispering again. I can hear most of what he's saying now, and it seems he is actually describing a scorpion attacking a frog. Reasonably graphically, too; the frog's screaming in pain at the moment, though thankfully that isn't aurally illustrated. The frog wants to know why he has been stung by the scorpion, "for now we will both surely die" ? I don't see why the scorpion will die. Maybe the frog is poisonous.
As the scorpion explains that it is his nature, the song explodes into the heavy rock of the genre description. The guitar is quite good; a nice full sound, and dynamic enough to get the heart pounding a bit. I can't hear what the guy's saying now; possibly it's the scorpion justifying it's nature, or maybe he's just eating the frog. I kind of want to know, anyway, as it seems a potentially interesting concept.
The whole song has something about it that I can't quite put my finger on. It just seems slightly..twisted. Nothing I can place exactly, it all just sounds kind of strange. It's not a bad thing, just worth commenting on.
The song goes quiet for a while, and then goes back to the loud bit. The vocalist seems to be saying "fee! fye! fo! fum! ..something something" now, and the song just goes out on a couple of revolutions of the guitar part.
8/10 Not bad at all. I kind of wish the vocals were easier to hear sometimes, but then maybe that's just my hearing that's at fault.

Amon Tobin - Four Ton Mantis
A loop made of bass and cut up woodwind samples and some strange noises starts it off, it sounds odd, and good, a bit like The Grand Silent System gone under the remix knife. Ride cymbals start, sounds like its going down funky street. And yes, it does, a laid back drum beat appears with many reversed sounds, I like it.
Now it changes drastically after 1 minute to a stampy piano bit, which sounds very much like Rabbit In Your Headlights. I wish it had kept the original sound and built on that. The drum beat is similar, but that's all. It still sounds decent, just different.
I know what this reminds me of.. Miocene - Cellular Memory! There are so many horn loops, absolutely rampant in here, but blened into the music so well that they are hardly noticed. Mid song, a happy piano starts, it's obviously a song built on progression than rep+var. While keeping a general jazz sound to it, the progressions don't seem to fit that well.
It seems the original loop has returned, I still like this one the best. I can hear how the horn loops are the joining points, the 3 main ones are being played simultaneously over the bass loop and it sounds practically perfect. Maybe it's cleverer than I first thought.
The last 45 seconds is some fairy playing piano with jazzy bass runs and drum fills.. kind of detracts from the controlled sound the majority of the song had. Then an applause sample is the end... yeah maybe it was all sourced from one jazz recording, that could explain it. But still, the end seemed out of character place.
Not bad, it's a grower, I more or less liked it in these initial listenings, but this musical analysis is going to make things stand out to me that I wouldn't notice if passively listening, where I usually enjoy stuff more. I think I need to brush up on my FL method again, I feel as though I've inadvertently slacked off lately.

Simon And Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle
Admittedly, my knowledge on non metal music is quite poor so I feel kind of awkward being exposed to an unknown style.
Well, maybe I'm not totally unfamiliar with it since I have an inadeqeate experience with folkmetal. However, it's much harder to hear the folk element in the guirar work, at least, of this song. While the folk metal I've been exposed to leans more towards to an epic/monumental direction, this track sounds more like an acoustic balland with an intense dimensional/dreamy feeling and a remarkable gentle touch.
This touch Im talking about is more notably delivered by the vocal harmonies, which are done in a very tasteful and catchy way and it's strengthened by the random use of keys (or synth/effects). The lyrics, which are about love, couldnt have fit better, making it even more emotional and romantic in a sense.
It's the first time I've heard of this duo - I assume - but this mellow, somehow indolent and chthonically nostalgic atmosphere heavily reminds me of some well known 60s hippie acid rock acts like Jefferson Airplane. A soothing listen in general although a bit out of time and place, if you know what I mean.

ABBA - Money, Money, Money (3:06)
I'm sure everybody is at this stage at least aware of this song, famous as it is, but I've never bothered listening to it closely. I've heard the phrase "the most metal pop band" before, but never really understood it, or cared to. Still, my musical perceptions have changed considerably since I hated ABBA with a passion (I now like Bon Jovi ), so I may even like this.
On with the show, then. It begins with some light, jumpy piano which seems to combine the operatic quality of Queen with a Beatles-like melodic twist, courtesy of some percussive instrument - a xylophone perhaps? We stop and resume, with funky, percussive bass and some dark, haunting piano, which brings images of "Young Frankenstein", the Mel Brooks film. Cool. Female singer enters, I've always liked her soft voice. I've always been amused by Scandinavians singing in English, because they keep dat nordern tinge in their voices.
It keeps building, coming to resemble a Bond tune or something. The way the piece picks up, with drums and extra power in the singer's voice, it's classic Bond. The chorus confirms it... The familiar "Money, Money, Money" is ornamented with some classic Bond touches, the repetitive synth and the slide guitar. Too bad about the melody, or rather the way the melody is sung. This is exactly why I've always hated ABBA, those unbearable chorus vocals. Ugh.
We return to the verse and build back to the chorus. The lyrics are awful! I know he's not a native speaker, but they're still just terrible. "I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay" - you're not Jon Bon Jovi! Cycle through the chorus, repeat etc. and we're done.
I was quite disappointed in the end, actually. The instrumental build-up was fantastic, giving me a new appreciation for the band. While I didn't like the chorus, I was at least expecting something else from such a musically competent composer. But no. :( For that reason, I'll have to give the song a mere 6/10. I wish I'd been given something to elevate it above. Once again, beautiful arrangement. I am a sucker for a Bond song or, as it seems to be here, a Bond-type song.

Wildhearts - Girlfriend Clothes
Stoic's Opinion
What we have here is a piece of 90s alternative rock played in the way Nirvana first popularized. Particularly, it's a light, mid-paced radio friendly track, yet hard enough for its standards since it doesnt have any mellow clean parts. A thing to notice is the -ridiculus if I want to get a bit stricter- simplicity of the song structure and riffage, which gets rather repetitive during the song. Also, some certain strokes, somehow slighty remind me of Nirvana's Floyd the Barber.
Besides the entirely conventional guitar playing, the song isn't too bad and has some certain strong points. It's quite tight, framed by an amazingly clean, yet typical for the genre, production and features a vocalist who can sound pretty strong when he decides to do his harsher vocals (like once or two in the verses).
The first verse ends with a very nice sounding line - I hear ageing lines abound, try the lost and found - which unfortunately isn't used again in the song. The chorus ends with a nice as well, slightly melancholic, line on which they could have worked more. In the end there's an expected surprise in the middle of the bridge, a very familiar sounding break from a certain style I'm unable to name at the moment.
In overall, although I can hear the elements that make this song very good for its style, it does not touch me or impress me at all. I dont even find it catchy since it hasnt stuck to my head even after several listens...

Pica Fierce - Into Oblivion
I don't know why I like only some tech death.. maybe I'll find an answer here.
Maybe it's the definition level, if I can make out the music easily, it seems so much nicer to me, no matter how heavy it is.
So far it's been all heavy riffing, fast, but not too fast, and I can hear everything that's going on, which is good. There is some odd-time lead guitar at the start, somehow I reckon I could play that without too much trouble, it doesn't sound that technical really.
Growly vocals start up, I could probably figure these lyrics out too if I listened hard enough. The guitar work reminds me a bit of Opeth, there really isn't as much lead guitar in here as I would hope for, and I find it a little bland (for the style of music). Maybe because Athiest was my first tech-death listen, I have my expectations set very high.
In the middle is an instrumental break, there's some slow lead, I thought it would burst into a guitar solo here.. but it goes back to some low riffs.. after quite a while there is a guitar solo which sounds suitably good, it shows the lead guitarists ability, which I was doubting for a bit until now.
Back to the lead from the start, I think it's not the first time something has been repeated. The ending is approcahing now, and again, its another bit from before, I'm afraid it's not a terribly exciting ending either, it just stops.
I came into this worried if it would be too intense for me. It made good a first impression with the way it was easy to hear things clearly. But in the end the songcraft just didn't impress me enough and I even found a fair bit of it wasn't that exciting.
Obviouly, Atheist set my expectations very high, and I'll stand by that. This band has the ability, they just have some growing to do.

Violetine - Any Day (3:14)
Listening to this song through headphones is the preferrable set up. In fact, I listened to it a few times just through my laptop speakers and it was pretty underwhelming. The mix is such that any sort of play will sound muffled, but the laptop just amplified that.
The song begins with some (I think) backwards guitar (something is reversed, anyway) before the band comes in for the song proper. The guitar is very muddy and the drums are loud and steady, but bass is almost non-existant. Whenever I think I hear bass I can't be sure it's not a guitar. There's two guitars at play, one more distorted than the other. The riff is simple, mainly single-string, resolving to a chord progression at the end of each measure. It sounds good, moves well, nice simple rock stuff.
I didn't initially like the vocals, but they're not hugely objectionable. His voice is deep and airy, of the grunge style. The music suits his vocals in that regard. The muddy tone of the verse and the imposing loudness of the chorus guitars are standard grunge-fare. I can't be too critical, I like this type of music. I'm guessing this could have been a single, it's got a suitably large and catchy chorus. I'm guessing it was a Australian Top 40 single in 1993. Amirite? The octave chords remind me of one of my favourite Marvelous 3 songs, The Retail Girl, so extra props for that.
Anyway, for whatever reason I'm not particularly moved by the song. It has plenty of positive characteristics, but it seems to be lacking something which would make it listenable on a regular basis. The chorus isn't particularly memorable, the lyrics are pretty basic, and it's just not a particularly attractive song for me. :-\ 6/10.

Stoic's Opinion
So, this is supposed to be traditional irish. I'm familiar and I actually enjoy metal bands who incorporate irish/folk elements to their music but it seems they always bring out an intense epic feeling in the monumental metal way. However, this listen can be compared with at least one metal band and this is certainly Cruachan, which happen to be Irish as well.
This track starts with a plain odd - yet somehow familiar - vocal line, which sounded kind of irritating at first but certainly grew on me in the second listen. After this, the song, which is mistly based on the vocals and has a rather simple structure, is being gradually built and flows in a very natural and effortless way.
Particularly, the lead vocalist has a strong and crystal at the same time voice which along with his heavy accent ideally fits to the music. The verse vocal line, somehow sounds a bit country-ish to me, but I guess this is normal since country is folk music as well. The back up vocals are used very tastefully and slightly varying from the main line, they really add to the chorus.
The guitar, which is kind of low in the mix, follows a simple rhythm pattern, gently accompanying the flute and at some point pipes, which along with the drumming actually very succefully embrace the folk/brotherhood feeling.
A very sweet and enjoyable song in overall. I'd like to know what the chorus lyrics mean and what Sting has to do with the overall thing (I'll be embarrassed if he's a guest lead vocalist :p)

The first thing I noticed was how the vocals were different from most power metal bands I've heard. A little bit rougher, more of a "warrior's voice" :) . The guitar is catchy if not all that original. It also has some rather typical "choir keyboard" backing. During the chorus there is some weird electronic harmonica type sound following the vocal line, though it is a quite catchy chorus. The guitar solo is mostly midpaced and fairly melodic. The bridge comes in with some backing "aaahhs." Another interesting note is that the song is about D-Day apparently, which is a topic I havn't seen in a metal song before.
A nice song though nothing mindblowing B

Atheist - An Incarnation's Dream (4:52)
I've seen Atheist pimped a lot around here, but this is my first time actually listening to the band.
The song begins with an picked acoustic guitar intro. It's a bit jangly, but also has an English folk feel, which leads to a slight Stairway To Heaven vibe, which is supported by the similar bass patterns in the songs. Electric guitar slowly works its way in, while there's also ambulance noises and some light, sporadic percussion. This is nice, 'tis.
Around the one minute mark, there's an abrupt stop and the piece explodes into action in a manner which reminds me of Pantera. The singer's voice is a bit less growly than I'd typically expect from a death metal band. He reminds me of Phil Anselmo a bit, actually. The whole thing reminds me a bit of Cowboys From Hell, actually. The guitar style is very rhythmic, and dominates the instrumental section, like Dimebag's. Am I noticing too many similarities? I should probably judge it on its own merits.
OK, just one more. There's a lead guitar measure during the second verse which reminds me of a Pearl Jam song, Even Flow I think. I'm done. I'm rubbish at identifying what's what in metal songs, seeing as this doesn't seem to have an identifiable chorus, so I'll just pick out a couple of my favourite parts: The riffing throughout is superb. Without meaning to invoke Pantera again, I do get that vibe. My metal knowledge isn't as extensive as it should be; the vocals are also really good throughout. I like the middle ground where he growls but I can still hear his actual voice, it works for me.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaalll right, that was an awful review, but I liked the song a lot. 8.5/10. If anyone else wants to send me some of their songs, we can make arrangements. I'm interested.

Butch Walker- Maybe its just me
Starts off with some percussion and then some happy chords come in. It reminds me of summer a lot. His voice is nice, reminds me a bit of Crowded House. Some intresting slidy effect comes in here, before the chorus. His head voice usage is excellent.
The chorus is catchy. I could imagine this being a hit on the radio. It slows down again after the chorus. It's a very feel good song. The slidy bit keeps intriguing me? What is it?
His voice is very powerful- when did he start singing/when was this released. It sounds almost like a happy Jeff Buckley in parts.
The breakdown kicks in, and there is a very electric guitar fills, before the pounding drums kick in and lead in to the chorus again. He's hitting some really interesting notes. I'm really digging this song a lot by this stage.
A bit of electric piano/organ comes in for a mini-solo. Interesting, good note choice. Ends on a long sustained note before fadeing out. I'm impressed, haven't heard anything by him before, but I really enjoyed this- 8.5/10. Can you reccomend some more songs by him for me?

Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want
I heard some Rolling Stones at my cousin's house and I thought it sounded a bit like Modest Mouse.. so I'll probably like it. For this song, there were so many versions to choose from, and I got the 7:33 one.
Theres a choir, very melodic sound with high pitched voices signing and everyone else with lower voices just going "ahhhh". I can hear the title being sung in there sometimes, and there's a lot that I can't figure out just now.
About a minute in, it fades into an acoustic guitar playing the same chords as the choir sung, and Mick Jagger (I assume) singing... I do like his kind of carefree way of singing. After a bit of this acoustic session, it burst's into a more upbeat piece of music, a fair bit of blues influence is in the guitar leads and organ that comes in sometimes. I'm not really taking notice of the lyrics.. the music alone is enough to keeping me happy.
The chorus is even better.. despite the title being sung, it sounds quite happy. Every instrument seems more alive in the chorus. It's got a really good feeling about it. Back to the verse again, some more bluesy lead parts keeping things in check.
Hm, it seems to be just alternating between the verses and chorus for the rest of the song.. but theres lots of lead breaks to keep it interesting. Every time the chorus hits.. it seems like everything just gets better, and you don't notice the feeling drop off when the chorus ends either. The choir comes back in the end of the song before it fades out, a nice touch to show that it had more of a purpose than just being the intro.
Despite it being older music (older than what I usually listen to), it doesn't sound too dated. They don't sound much like Modest Mouse this time, maybe I was just imagining it. This song was easy to listen to, foot tapping music, the chorus was the best part for me. It was a good song. 8.7/10

Goldie Lookin' Chain- Soap Bar
From the start the beat sounds laid back, and the vocals seem to be very raw. The english accent annoys me after a bit though- maybe because I'm not used to them.
The second voice comes in, and I like the tone and rhythm of it better. The guitar in the background seems to have a wahwah effect on it which is nice.
The chorus is pretty catchy also. The guys seem to be good at telling a story. 'Your better off smoking the green instead' I can see lines like this showing the band doesn't take themselves that seriously' which I really like in a band. There is an instrument in the chorus that reminds of Ariel the Mermiad. I have no idea what it is or why it reminds me of it but :p
It seems to be about drugs again in this song 'Eat a hash cake'. 'I tried to see things from his point of view but I couldn't seem to fit my head up his arse' (not how I spell it, how it sounds). Great line, made me chuckle.
Overall, a very laid back song, haven't heard much laid back hip-hop that I liked but this was pretty cool. Could of done with some more back and forth play between the lyricists however. 6.5/10

End Of Fashion - O Yeah
This band was the big theme on JJJ this morning with regard to their comments about Wolfmother. They were given quite a bit of stick for that and then some similarites between Pixies - Where Is My Mind were played, but I'm not too influenced by what the J's think.
A raw indie guitar progression open the song, some cheers and then a quick line of whammy'd up lead guitar. Ok, I just want to say even if I hadn't heard JJJ this morning I would have duly noted the likeness to Where Is My Mind.
Pretty indie-pop sound. It has quite a raw sound, but that's what I implied when I said "indie". The singer has a decent voice, without sounding too clean or refined, he can still hit the notes close enough for my liking. The vocals are very prominent in the mix. At the end of the verse is a one beat rest.
The chorus is much bigger sounding, the notes sound like the Pixies song but the force of the music and the singing sounds like it's own, some nice vocal harmonies in there too. It's actually quite likeable.
In the middle is a sour little bridge (singing about sweet candy), but it becomes more melodic by the end, a nice transition from there and back to the catchy chorus. A million bands could have used that chord progression so it's not really something one can say has been ripped off. The backing vocals bring up the end of the song with "On and on and on..."
This song wasn't so bad, I'd be pretty sure it's music was based heavily on the Pixies song, but it's still got it's own thing going for it. Everything seems to fall into place, unforced.. Things happen right when they are meant to, there's no surprises, and for once I meant that in a good way. I'll surely listen to this when I want something I don't have to think hard about. JJJ, go eat a dick.

The Grand Silent System - They Who Built-Transmutation (4:36)
Like most of bluey's bands, I've never heard of them before, so it's always a nice experience. This is the kind of song that annoys me though, because I can never pick out all the instruments and I hate not knowing
OK, the song starts with dual acoustic guitars, which have a classical feel to them, resembling a lute somewhat. One plays bass and the odd high string, while the lead plays a melody higher up. In fact, the first guitar part could be two, I can't tell. There's a lot of notes in there. It's simple but absolutely beautiful.
Strong rhythm comes in in the form of snare drum and very low, very distorted bass. A flute melody follows soon after, winding its way in between the guitars. It has a real vocal quality to it. When I saw this was a jazz-like piece I was expecting something far different. This is jazz I can appreciate  The flute reminds me of Sting, but in a completely good way.
The singer enters with (synthesised) strings around 1:25. I can see where I got the impression that the flute was vocal-like; he imitates it when he begins. He doesn't really attempt to impose himself on the piece like a lot of singers do, he seems to drift in and out of the song. The rhythm throughout is pounding, bass and drums, which reminds me of Franz Ferdinand, strangely.
The flute disappears for a slower section now, and the guitar and strings become more pronounced. One of the guitars is electric now, it echoes quite a bit. Then there's a bit which is quite neo-classical, reminds me of those metal bands. There's a very theatrical melody, commanding, led by electric guitar and backed by strings with some heavy, dramatic drumming. It doesn't last long, however, as the song quickly draws to a close, faded out by some flute again.
Another excellent pick, man. Very enjoyable and challenging :) 8.5/10.
I'll have some new songs up soon; I think I've exhausted my recent supplies by now.

Marvelous 3 - You're So Yesterday (Lo-fi/Power-pop)
The song starts out with some guy yelling "love excitement, I'm excited" a couple of times. Next appears the guitar, which sort of reminds me of U2. In comes the bass, hitting a few notes. I really like the lead guitar, although I think the bass and the other guitar (the one simply strumming the odd chord) could have been done better. The drums quickly burst in with a pick slide from the guitarist. The vocalist enters, singing a simple "do do do do do" type of thing. This part sounds really poppy. The first verse comes in a short while after that with typical pop-punk palm muting. The vocals enter, and while nothing special, they do the job. Following standard pop format, the chorus follows soon, starting off with "you're so yesterday". The chorus isn't that catchy, although it's not bad. After the chorus is done they repeat the "do do do do do" part, followed by another verse (who would've guessed?!), then followed by the chorus. At around the 2:10 mark they decide to change it up. The palm muted guitar accompanies the singer's voice. The bass plays the odd notes here and there, then right back to the chorus. The chorus has become a little more catchy, although it's still average. The song closes with the "do do do do do" part once again.
I really liked the main intro riff, but I think they didn't use it as effectively as they could've. The verses were typical, but still enjoyable. I enjoyed the "do do do do do" part in between the chorus/verse. The chorus was mediocre at first, but after a few listens it grew a little on me. Over all I enjoyed this song. I see myself throwing it on the odd time in the future when I'm preoccupied with homework/computer coding. I don't see myself running out to purchase one of their albums anytime soon though.

Necroart - Le Fleur Noir
Cool band name, cool song title, I had to check it out.
*play*
An acoustic intro with some synth (according to Neuro) in the background, sounds pretty good, a bit Opeth-ish or the likes of Dark Tranquillity, I suppose. Now the vocals creep in through the background, they sound a bit electronically altered, it's pretty nice. It didn't go straight into distortion as I kinda expected after the drums introduced the vocals.
Now the strumming gets faster and the drums are worth noticing, they're quite creative. I suspect it to get heavier soon. Oh yes, harsh vocals now, not the best I've ever heard, but alright, the distorted riff and the vocals on top sound quite dramatic together, I sense a dark theme in lyrics, but I can't really catch enough of the words to be sure. I suck at picking up words in songs, you see.
After this we go back into an earlier acoustic passage and then further into the distortion again, and so it goes back and forth for a while, it all sounds pretty good.
Ah, now we have some kind of symphonic element added, sounds nice. Ooh, what's this, I like this riff, much more prominent than the other riffs, so far. This must be the highlight of the song, the vocals now mix with it and it is quite melodic. Yes, I approve of this section.
It ends symphonically, something that I can appreciate. Nice
A solid 8/10 for thee, black flower.

Therapy? - Little Tongues First (4:25)
Oh Jelle and his wma files... I enjoy all of the Therapy? songs in my collection to date, so this should be fun.
Song starts off with an ear piercing (tone-wise) lead guitar melody, very simple, which reminds me of the beginning of the Manic Street Preachers' The Intense Humming Of Evil. The machine-like feedback which pulls in like a train to a station continues, but marks the end of, the similarities. We now revert to a familiar four-piece rock/metal setup, two guitars, bass and drums with some shouting in the background.
I say it's a standard rock setup, but there are a few quirks. The guitar riffing is standard, heavy muted guitar and parallel octaves, but the drummer really stands out for me. He opts out of playing the obvious 4/4 beat, leaving instead a hole on the second beat which leaves me very uneasy. It's intriguing though. I'm talking about it as if it hasn't been done before or something, but it just sounds wrong. And great.
Vocals in the verse are typical Andy Cairns, slightly monotonous, focusing very much on the words rather than the inflections. I can hear his crazy Belfast accent tee hee. The lyrics, as I mentioned, are clear. He speaks of his unwillingness to back down, with a swagger Tom Petty could never ever manage. The chorus is the repeating of: "Suicide pact, suicide pact, suicide pact... you first!" which is just plain awesome. Catchy in the non-pop way and lyrically fantastic. He reminds me of Ginger Wildheart with his chorus vocals in general, and this is no exception. That's it though, it's just verse and chorus, really.
This was a tough song to approach. Therapy?'s songs aren't really "interesting" in the FL sense, so I had to just listen to it over and over (I listened 7 times) to see if it worked for me. And it kind of did. It's not in the same league as others (Screamager, Hellbelly), but it's still a good little song. Me gives: 7/10.

Yep, back. I think I've been too busy recently, or something, to take part.
I checked out their self-titled album when it came out a few years ago, and it was alright from what I remember. More to the point, I still listen to and rather enjoy one of the songs from it.
30 Seconds To Mars - I'll Attack - 3:13
Starts off with echo-ey, relatively quiet, pretty little clean bits, before the vocals come in early on. At first he sounds like he's going to whisper (dramatically), but it resolves itself into a normal clean vocal line. He sounds alright, though I think he's better on the song(s) I like from their older album so far. He sounds a little less natural here, I think.
As he starts singing, the rest of the band come in to support him, and though they're not doing anything particularly interesting, it's not bad. They all drop out to allow him to shout on his own "and I am finally free", with everything jumping back in behind him, in a power-pop kind of loudness, on the "free". His voice in this, which I assume is the chorus, is not as good as it was before. His voice sounded like it was maybe a little strained before, but in the chorus it sounds like it is definitely so. Maybe he's tried to add a bit of an edge to it or something, but it just sounds like he's straining for something he can't do.
Anyway, the chorus is reasonably short, and then it's back to the verse (in which his voice now sounds considerably better than it did at first). It's got a fairly fast-paced rhythm to it, but it doesn't feel like it's particularly moving me or anything. It's just there.
Nice little bit around 1:15 where he does kind of what he did to lead into the chorus before - instruments drop out, and his voice rises before the band jump back in - but with a lot more success. This is somewhat ruined by going into another chorus with vocals I don't like, but at least it was there.
Back (almost; there's a bit more going on) to how the introduction sounded now, after the second chorus, this time with echo-ey mixed way back in the background, before the now familiar dive into the chorus. The drummer gets a nice fast roll towards the end, before the whole song just fades out on what it played for most of it's existence.
6/10 I wouldn't say it was bad per se, but at the same time I'm not sure I'd listen to it again in a hurry.

Brad Paisley - Two Feet Of Topsoil (2:46)
Hmm.. Brad Paisley.
The first thing that struck me about this song was that it's a lot more bluegrassy than typical country; it's very tight musically but still centred around the vocals, it is folk music after all.
As far as I can tell, Brad has gone dun wrong by his girl, digging himself a proverbial hole, now there's "two feet of topsoil, little bit of bedrock, limestone in between" aswell as fossilised dinosaurs and crude oil between him and his girl. She finds a new man and he doesn't want to get involved. He's lost her :(
The musicianship is great throughout. The song starts out slowly with a dual violin melody, which reminded me of Irish folk, before an electric guitar enters, picking notes cleanly. The song then explodes to life with a peppy, banjo-like acoustic guitar melody. Very quick, very clean, very controlled as bluegrass guitar generally is. There's touches of power metal in the heavy keyboard-aided progression, and far too much to actually talk about.
Vocals come in, I know what his voice is like from Country Music TV. He's quite a bit more of a high-pitched twanger than I'd like, but I've heard far worse. The verses are driven by the drums and briskly strummed guitar, interspersed with flourishes of electric and acoustic guitar and violin, while the chorus involves the whole kitchen sink. Acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, violins, drums, keyboards, probably more that I can't name. The song is very catchy too. It gets a little tired towards the end as the chorus is repeated too many times and the singer strains himself trying to vary his singing.
/falls over
Yeah, that's basically it. There's a nice instrumental section after one of the choruses where the instruments each take turns adding quick flourishes, which is one of my favourite aspects of music in general, right up there with glammy group shouts. So, yeah, that was a tiring review. My arms hurt. Very enjoyable song. I'll definitely listen to it again, but it wore thin even on the few listens I just gave it. 7/10.

Marvelous 3 - Indie Queen
Never heard of this band before...indie music isn't really my type of stuff. However, I'm always open.
Starts right away with some poppy guitar, what sounds like synths, and some singing...or oooing. Can’t think of a better word. 2 guitars for the verse...one electric, playing some notes, and one acoustic with chords. The singer is very poppish, yet has a non-irritating voice, unlike others. Second part of verse turns the distortion back on, and actually features a non-poplike chord progression.
Chorus is pretty straightahead...simple chord progression, singer hits some high notes, whatnot. So far, I haven’t shut it off in disgust yet, which is a good thing. Transitions into another verse, with what sounds like an overdubbed third guitar. Another chorus repeated twice, an interlude, and a new clean part. Sounds like some slide guitar? Maybe...distortion comes back on, and another chorus is played. An outro riff starts playing, with the singer saying “How you feel that way” rather high up. Ends with a fadeout.
Pretty straighforward poppy indie song. However, it sounds good, and there is a bit more complexity in the guitar arrangements than what appears on the surface.

Green Carnation - Between The Gentle Small And Tall
Fingerpicked intro with chorus effect, it sounds like Nirvana, but heavys up pretty soon. It's got a hard southern sound like Karma To Burn or Monster Magnet. This is not what I was expecting, it rather straightforward, not avantgarde or prog at all.. oh well.
I hear an organ buried deep in the music. The singer's voice is not as powerful as the music demands, but the multi-tracking or backup singers help a bit. The music has just a verse bit with the fingerpicking, and a chorus with the heavy guitar over the top, and it stays that way for a while.
In the middle is a calm bit, some synth and a bit of phaser action on the vocals, then theres a heavier section which includes electric piano improvisation and it sounds rather nice, like a ballad, it's the most interesting bit of the song so far. As out of place as it may seem, it flows well back into the chorus section again, they play that couple of times, and then the song ends on the hard note.
That song just seemed to go by without making me take much notice of it, because it wasn't really noticable. I don't know why, it just went in one ear and out the other, except the middle bit, which I liked a fair bit. I'm not saying I didn't like the song... I just really didn't love it. It seems surprisingly hard to say something definite about it... ok, it was a hard rock song.

Substitute Inc. - Evacuate (6:30)
Begins with a fast-paced clean rhythm guitar riff, backed by some interesting but lowly-mixed drumming. The guitar is doubled by a synth of some sort, which creates a bit of a System of a Down vibe, which is reinforced by the vocals which are half-rapped in the Serj style.
This moves to a slower section where guitar stabs are doubled by more synth, drums are more prominent. This reminds me of bands like Misery Loves Co. crossed with Rage Against The Machine. The rapping here is very reminiscent of Zach de la Rocha, even down to the tone of his voice. The music is also quite experimental, as the guitar makes "un-guitar" sounds at points, producing an ear splitting melody towards the end of the slow passage.
This again morphs into a similar beginning to the previous passage, clean guitar dominates the melodic scape. It's now backed by some early-90s sounding synths, like something from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as the vocalist speaks for a bit. Then the intro riff returns and we have more rapping. This seems to be the main theme of the piece.
Again, a slow section. Distorted vocal line contrasts with the main rap, again RATM-like. Then there's a period of again distorted guitars, a heavy rhythmic riff and bursts of "un-guitar" and more synth noises etc. More of this, then a fade out to the ear-splitting passage as discussed. In find this whole song bizarrely unsettling. It's not spooky or anything, it's just... unnerving. The piece fades out thus.
Honestly, I didn't like it. There was plenty going on and it was interesting to describe, but there wasn't much to keep me interested as a listener. It's not something I'd listen to again given the chance. 4/10.

The Beatles - Real Love
I've gotten into the band a bit lately, still, some of the songs are a hit and miss affair for me.
There's this church organ with piano at the start. It sounds sombre for a bit, but when the singing starts it takes on a happier sound, but I can't tell if it's meant to be or not. It keeps switching between happy and sad feeling music very quickly. Whoever is singing sounds like a munchkin (might be the production) and he's hard to understand.
After the verse completes one run, the drums start up properly and it does sound more or less happy. Some nice little guitar licks between the singing, which I can understand now.
The chorus hits with a sour augmented chord sound, but resolves into a happy vibe, "It's real love, it's real". Vocal harmonies always seem to make a happy bit sound extra happy. That chorus is catchy.
The intro bit plays again, and there could be harpsichord in it too. Just one verse then the chorus. Lead guitar is starting to infect the music now. After this chorus is a solo :o. I didn't know The Beatles had solos, it's not a difficult one, but still cool.
The verse comes back and then the chorus is repeated to end the song. I like the lead guitar in the later stages of the song, it's simple but pretty effective. I'm glad it ends up being a happy song.
Yeah I liked it. A manic-depressive song if I ever heard one, but a much better way of doing it than the soft verse-heavy chorus of nu-metal bands in recent years. No, I'm not comparing them. The lead guitar was really well done. I don't know what else to say in this concluding statement, just read the review.
Hit. 8/10

Heard of them before, but I'm not sure whether I've actually heard anything by them. If I have, it was probably also for Forced Listening.
Custard - Ladies and Gentlemen - 3:25
Starts off with some nice, pretty clean, kinda folky guitar. Good start. Goes into a reasonably gentle rhythm when the rest of the band comes in, but it sounds rather upbeat, as opposed to slightly melancholy. Vocals come in, and first impression is that the voice is nothing special, but also nothing to complain about.
The song just kind of pootles along to the end of the verse, when the guitars make a semi-dramatic gesture, and the drums start building in the background. Combined with what the guy's saying, it all sounds pretty good actually. Better than I thought it would be at the start of the song, if I'm honest. Is that a hint of violin coming in towards the end of this section? If so, then even more drama points. The fact that I'm not sure means it might not be, though. Could be a keyboard, I suppose.
When the vocals stop, a solo starts. Sounds like a solo anyway, though it is in fact joined by a second (and later third) instrument, and repeats itself over. I'll call it a solo. It's fairly slow (not incredibly slow, but at least not-fast), slightly upbeat and quite good, much like the rest of the song up to this point. The violin/keyboard is following the solo's line, which is fine. Throughout the second repetition (when the third sound joins it) the drums build in the background in a similar way that they did before what I now assume was the chord beforehand, and sure enough, they go into the chorus upon reaching the end of the second run-through. I like it.
The chorus is more or less exactly the same as the one before, except with a more pronounced violin, which I'm now more sure is actually a violin. Either that or a really talented theremin player.
Nice line about nostalgia, and the songs finishes really well (with the vocal ba-ba-bas), and then just fades out.
I'm really suprrised at how much I wrote for this, since a lot of the time throughout it I thought there wasn't much going on. I was thinking a pretty low score (6 or 6.5) for most of the time, but in the end I really quite liked it.

Sufjan Stevens - Decatur, or, Round of Applause For Your Stepmother (folky indie)3:03
Kicks off with a folky guitar strumming (which remains in a large part of the song), along with an accordion and... another guitar. The vocals are nice, two characters singing. The lyrics are funny, at some extent... mmm... Very southern-like painting. The songwriting is amazing, I must add.
The song remains the same, as in the field of the rhythm and pace, but that doesn't make it bad at all... It's a soothing song. The instruments all add up nicely to the vibe of the song, it makes you feel like you're in the south... smoking... sitting in a rocking chair... hunting possums... The highlight of the song: "Steven A. Douglas was a great debater, But Abraham Lincoln was the great emancipator".
Sometimes the rhyming scheme is a little botherful... but overall it's nice. No real big complains.

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
I probably heard this years ago, but I didn't really like the band much then. Recently I've heard some songs and I seem to like them now.
The opening sounds Deftones-y, that is, dissonant while keeping a solid underlying musical basis. Light drums come in and keep the slow beat. This same music continues as the vocalist starts singing, his whiny voice is still irritating, maybe it was this that put me off in the past. I can get over it now. Sounds like someone else is doubling an octave lower, it's definitely a different voice.
It sounds kind of raw and clean at the same time. Is this the chorus? The deeper voice guy just saying Tick Tock. The music is simlar to before. Nope, not the chorus. This is depressing kind of music, but I dig it.
Double vocals and the original music is back again, some strange sounding lyrics. Not so great sounding guitar in this bit, but it passes quickly so no problems there.
About 3 mins in, the music gets a chorusy feel, but it's too far into the song to be one. The guitar is playing a simpler picking melody, it fits well. Vocals are harmonising, singing the title. This is real downer music, yet like Katatonia, they still make it catchy in a way. After a few repeats it ends on a sustained guitar chord.
Mmhm, I haven't heard that song before, the name was just familiar. I did like it, most of it was done well. The singers voice is the only negative for me, but focusing on just him is silly. The music was simple and effective, can't complain about that. I'd go for more of their songs in the future.

Woo, someone else that's heard of these guys! I've only heard Release from Polyserena and it's amazing (any chance you could direct me to an mp3, blueyxd?). So I'm expecting more of the same from this...
As expected, Katie Noonan's incredible voice drives this song. It's very easy to listen to; her octave-jumping antics aren't annoying at all, mainly because she hits each and every note absolutely perfectly. The woman is very talented.
The beginning of this song is very fragile and delicate, courtesy of Noonan's voice and a pretty, floating melody on what sounds like an FX'd metallophone (probably a keyboard). Drums and acoustic guitar enter but stay in the background, complementing the vocals, which are very much the focus here.
A section that is immediately identifiable as a chorus enters, with the drums doing that slidy thing on the snare drum with brushes. The intensity is upped a bit here with the appearance of another strange keyboard/organ sound, in high registers. The verse/chorus formula repeats once before the appearance of a bridge, which is driven more by drums than any other section. There are a lot of sounds here, and the effect is reasonably epic, as Katie Noonan does some wordless soaring with her voice, before the chorus, in a new, energetic incarnation, repeats once more before the song ends.
Overall, very impressive relaxation/soft rock.

Porcupine Tree - Wedding Nails
I've listened to Porcupine Tree, and it wasn't really my thing, but that was Deadwing. Hearing this, I am quite impressed. Right off the bat I thought, ooh this reminds me of some good stoner metal. The main riff is quite nice, and the bassline is great. Then they go into a kind of middle-eastern sounding guitar part, it's an awesome riff. It keeps changing, but staying brilliant... it reminds me of a softer version of Opeth really. The keyboards aren't very impressive but they give a good atmosphere. At about 1:50 it breaks down a little more, it's pretty simplistic guitarwise, but it gives the drummer and keyboardist more time to breathe so to speak. The lead at this part is really creepy, but cool. After this point it just gets quiet. Some very creepy atmospheric keys, very faint drumwork, but a cool section, and then bam the middle-eastern-ish part busts out again. At around 4:36 they go into a more stoner metal-esque part, and the keyboardist plays some weird shuffly sounding thing, and it goes back into the atmospheric part and fades out.
Over-all that song really impressed me, the only Porcupine Tree album I've heard was Deadwing... it's good, don't get me wrong... but wow, this song made Deadwing seem like a heaping pile of ****. Overall I'd give the song a 5/5, really a great instrumental.

I know I said I would post this a few days ago, but I have been really busy with school work. On top of that, I have had some computer issues that I was frantically trying to resolve.
Overcast – Apocalypse Upon Us
I must start by saying I found a new band that I really like. Thanks to Eleventeen for giving me the option to review the song.
I enjoy the slow build up, even if it is rather cliché, its just damn cool. Then the band kicks in. This is the equivalent of getting punched in the face. With the mellow intro, I was not expecting the Death Metal lyrics. The whole song is very aggressive and in your face, but in a good way. It’s not a very technical song, but not simple either. It’s a good listen that I think most metal fans can enjoy.
I also think the vocalist is pretty talented. They may not be the best harsh/growled lyrics out there, but they aren’t too shabby either. I wasn’t to impressed with the guitar tone, but that is the only fault I can find with the song after several listens.
I give it a 4.5/5
Opeth – Baying of the Hounds (Progressive Death Metal)
Spiral Architect – Conjuring Collapse (Progressive/Technical Metal)

Testament - Face In The Sky
The timing of the intro bit reminds me of Slayer's stop on a dime way of playing. This is good, the drums roll in and we have a solid piece of thrash happening. The main riff that begins in the verse is great, i get a James Hetfields meets Rob Halford feel from the singer. Lead fills are injected here and there that sound pretty sweet, and the way that they play around with drum fills and riff timing reminds me very much of Slayer.
Solo time. Its solid. Alex Skolnick (is that their guitarist i vaguely remember?), does blazing fast sweeps and tapping to good effect, theres some unique parts in here too i notice that make it stand out from other thrash solos i have heard before. We have more singing, and back to the chorus for the finish.
All up it is a very solid piece of thrash that will grown on me over time, and i will definately check out some Testament. I have been meaning to for quite a long time have heard much about them.
I give it a 8/10
I reserve a 9 for something that amazes me and a 10 for something that is truly mindblowing. This is simply great and solid thrash, nuttin wrong with that.

Gwar- Womb without a view
Starts off with some pounding drums and a few guitar licks before bursting into a guitar solo. Sort of screaming/singing combo comes in. Sort of slipknot-y vocals is the best way i could describe them. Guitar Riff is pretty cool. My version the volume keeps swelling up and down randomly... probably a bit of a dodgy download. This isn't usually my type of music, but I liked the solo at the start. Another guitar solo comes in at about 1:45. A short one this time, pretty nice though. Not really a big fan of the vocals in this song, and the drums get pretty annoying.
Not really my kind of thing, although I've heard these guys are pretty sweet live. They do sound more of a live band then a studio band.

Nick Cave - Stagger Lee
I've never really explored Nick Caves work but i've liked songs like 'Deanna' and 'The Ship Song'. I like what i've heard. This song starts with a slow drum, bass section with a slow and scratchy waa riff. Slow paced drums kick in with the vocals and some keys i think, and Nick Cave starts his 'brooding with a slight snarl' style of vocal. The song carries on in its brooding fashion, theres very little change except for some drum fills and keys along with Nick Caves vocals which feature some awesome lyrics as far as i can understand. This song is very Tom Waits like. Is this a cover?
Overall its a brooding piece of work, and really smooth. It sounds dark as all hell like the soundtrack to drinking away your sorrows in some dank and slummy pub in the lowest corner of a forlorn industrial area somewhere. I love it. Could compare it to Tom Waits. Nick Caves vocals remind of Mike Patton somehow, in his more brooding moments. Very solid.

Ween - Mutilated Lips
There's slow guitar chord strumming, probably with a capo on it. There's also some hand percussion instead of drums and a wierd reverse echo on the vocals. It's pretty ethereal. Verse part 2 has some different chords and a short bit of fingerpicked guitar that echoes.
I can't help but like this.
Aah, I remember these guys, the helium sounding voice in the chorus brings back memories of that stupid song Push the Little Daisies. This song seems much better and easier to listen to. Strange lyrics, they are pretty much narrating a Tool video.
The verse is back again, now a soft synth is joining in on some high notes and slides. It's hard to tell what he is saying due to the vocal effects, but the music is just capturing me that I don't really mind. Chorus again, the same as before, not much to say.
Verse music without singing, with slide guitar and another reverby bit of guitar. The guitar starts to slide around like the synth, but not in unison. This song is good, I'd love to listen to it in a car at night.
The slide guitar and synth continue into the chorus this time, which repeats a couple of times and ends.
Sweet song, quite creepy and stuff. I was expecting it to get silly once I recognized that voice, but it was a great bit of music. For some reason, I like the fact it's got a really subdued feel to it... maybe I'm just in the right mood for it now. Definite keeper, medium wow factor.

Karnivool - Themata
The song starts up quick, with heavy guitars, and I think I hear a keyboard in there too. Soon it breaks into another section. There is a lot going on, but it doesn't sound too cluttered. The guitar leads really stand out, and it sounds pretty cool.
Next it comes to the verse, it is a lot softer but still holds the feel of the previous passage. The vocals are kind of disguised with under an effect. I like it, it's pretty catchy. Soon the actually vocals come in, he his voice reminds me of the singer for Dream Theater a little bit, but not near as bad.
The chorus comes in, it has kind of the standard epic prog feel to it. I don't really have a whole lot to say about it. I like the guitar riff, the chord progression is a little interesting, but other than that nothing really stands out to me.
After the second chorus they hold that last chord out and fade into an interlude. It's the same thing that was at the beginning of the first verse, which is cool, because I really like this part. Afterwards it breaks into a little keyboard lead, which leads into the next part of the verse.
The song then returns to the chorus, then ends with a series of riffs, all kind of centered around the same progression.
I really liked this song. It seemed a bit like too much like Dream Theater to me at some points, but there was one thing that really stood out, no wankery solos. This is the kind of prog metal that I could see myself listening to, I'll probably download a few more songs here pretty soon.

I really like DFD's first album, so it'll be nice to hear something from one of their others.
Dog Fashion Disco - 100 Suicides 3:53
Starts off with a couple of beeps, before launching into a nice, heavy riff. It's quite quick and pretty catchy, actually. Some whining synth comes into it just before everything steps back a bit to let the vocalist do his thing.
Lyrics seems to be typically weird DFD stuff, and thought it's gone a little quieter for the verse, the constant tap-tap beat from the drummer is keeping the thing moving along at a fair pace. That chorus is awesome. It's ridiculous how easy it would be for me to name this band correctly, if I didn't know who was playing - but that's a good thing. I love what they do. Quick switches in style and pitch and volume, and occasionally tempo, but with great lyrics and unrelenting catchiness.
That's it, really, I just can't say much more. Everything about this is catchy, the chorus is great (I'm practically laughing every time he leaps up to singing "I committed one hundred suicides!").. the synth isn't annoying, the tempo of the whole thing is perfect.
10/10. Yeah, maybe this was cheating a bit - just a chance for me to catch up on more from a band I haven't listened to in ages. But God damn, I need more DFD.

Gomez - Get Miles
A rhythmic fuzz is opening proceedings, followed by some reverby tribal percussion and bluesy wah'd guitars. That's interesting ey?
Shakers come join in, adds a laid back feel. The singer starts.. hard grainy blues voice, very prominent in the mix. He sounds a bit like the singer from Powderfinger, but much manlier in a chainsaw kind of way. So far, not really moving me much.. but we shall see. It's a really bluesy sound, much more blues than indie. He sings bout how he doesn't like sticking around in one place and how he's going to travel.
Drums are building up slowly slowly and subtly. More and more tom hits sneaking in there. Same verse thingy again, more of the same theme. The vocal harmony is a bit of a surprise, even if it last for just a few words.
About half way through, a piano starts having a slow jam, same with does a wah-enhanced guitar. Sounds like there could even be a synth in there as well, not sure what that is.
Verse thingo as before. Slow and plodding, not really exciting me much. After a bit the singing stops and the guitar and piano improv a bit while some other stuff like trombones happen. The drums drop off for a bit, then come back with more of the laid back rhythm. The song pretty much ends about here with a fade out.
These first listens didn't impress all that much, I found it to be a rather slow, go nowhere song. Perhaps that's intended as an irony for the lyrical theme. The 5 minutes seemed to take much longer than 5 minutes. Basically, it's mood music for a mood I'll never be in.

Clann Zu - An Bad Dubh
Begins with some nice acoustic guitar playing, before heading into some pitiful vocals. I really dislike the vocals, reminds me too much of Coldplay. It's a shame too, once the violin sets in, and the drums later on, there's some really good music to be heard here. Typical of the genre, this song starts off slowly, before building to a crescendo, and then dying back down. The violin parts near the end are incredibly well done.
It's a fairly short and simple song, not much to say about it. The guitar and violin were excellent, the rhythm did it's part, and the vocals really brought it all down. I enjoy Sigur Ros' vocals, but I just really couldn't like these. All in all, very good music, bad vocals. I'd highly recommend this to fans of Sigur Ros, as it's very close musically.
Overall: 7/10
The vocals just ruin an 8 or 9.

The songs intro is pretty catchy. Well done duo guitars, and catchy melody. The vocals are nothing better than decent IMO. He's better than most growling screamers, but I can't get very into his voice otherwise. During the chorus, I'm not a fan of the lead guitar part. It fits the song fine, but it turns me off. However, the short part after the chorus contains the catchy melody, which I like.
There's a lenghty segment at about the 1:30 mark, which lasts till about 3:00 (the bridge). It's pretty boring IMO. Nothing too special, just a few solid riffs, and some melodies. Then at 3:00 it goes back into the intro riff, which is still my favorite part of the song. The verse and chorus then repeat themselves, and the song diminishes with it's intro....
Overall the songs mediocre, 6/10. Melodic Death Metal is a lesser-liked style of mine, so I wasn't expecting this to get a much better rating anyways. My most favored part of the song was the intro, where there's that catchy melody. I liekd that :)

Mr. Bungle - Slowly Growing Deaf
Starts off with a pretty cool funky little into before heading into an atmospheric part with some decent singing over it. About a minute in some chugging palm mutes and drums come in, and the singing gets a bit better (Mike Patton correct?). The chorus (I'm assuming) is a bit underwhelming, just some decent synthy things over some chords. It gets funky after this, with a little of that Patton-esque weirdness rearing it's head 2:20 in, with a Nintendo-like interlude, and then the atmospheric part is played in the back of the chugs and vocals, and it is almost epic in sound. Very good part. A screechy solo and some chanted vocals arrive almost 3 minutes in. 4 minutes in the speed picks up a bit, and Patton starts screaming, just before it abruptly reverts back to the atmospheric bit from the beginning. It starts to get a bit jazzy at 5:00, with a short burst of noise 20 seconds later, then back to the jazz. At 6 minutes everything abruptly ends, and for the remainder of the 6:59 track, there's some sort of piggish noises and random talking.
Very Patton indeed. I can't say I'm his biggest fan, but I do enjoy his music occasionally. I prefer Faith No More over this band, going by this song, but I will probably give this one a listen sometime in the near future. 7/10

Once again, if help is needed obtaining any of these, let me know.
Starts off with bird noises, reminiscent of the rainforest, though suppose they are actually European woodland birds. Next we have a simple pipe playing a very folksy tune. Pounding drums beat out a steady, almost Celtic beat, and after a minute, we have just the birds again. I'm waiting for the song to go heavy, and as the suspense builds up, I'm wondering if perhaps the band has tried something new.
However, not soon after the song comes back in full force. The guitars are heavy, chugging out several standard black metal riffs. The drummer is a beast, I have to say that for him. However, the vocalist is... unique, but not exactly what I'd call forceful, or haunting, or even all that harsh. Another complaint is that the mixing seems to force the music down below the vocals, which is somewhat annoying.
Overall I'm enjoying this song, but I feel that the latter part is far better than the beginning. For at 4.25 or thereabouts I'm treated to a nice little interlude, and then a new song structure and melody comes into play. Perhaps I'm getting used to his vocals, but it appears like the vocalist is sounding a lot better, or perhaps blending better at this part of the song.
One minute later, and the song stops, suddenly.
I quite enjoyed this song, so I think I will check out more of them. I suppose with some time I will start to enjoy the vocalist, as well. Good band, with some good ideas. I'll give it 8/10.

Therion - Midgard
A band that's been somewhere on my "to check out" list for years.
For the intro, it's got a cool driving drum rhythm in 6/8 and simple melodic lead guitar. It just goes for a few bars, the lead guitar is replaced by some basic power chords.
Oh god, the vocals... operatic and choirful... it's probably all guys too. I guess this isn't as cheesy as some high pitched male PM singing stuff, but it's close on my cringeometer. The music isn't bad though, a bit basic, but it has ambience, which I like.
I can't make out what they are signing. Maybe a good thing since the fantasy vocals also put me off.
There's a bit of easy lead between the singing. It sounds pretty easy, I reckon I could play this song without too much effort. After the 2nd round of chanting, the intro lead returns for a bit, then it changes, opting for a more In Flames guitar harmony sound. At 3:30 just at the buildup to the guitar solo, it actually reminds me of a midi I wrote years ago. I had a dramatic emotional build up that sounded so much like this one.
The music had been rather basic (not necessarily bad) until this point, but the guitar solo brings forth the musical ability I had been expecting from the outset. I wish the lead guitarist had been doing more like this throughout the song, I might not have noticed the vocals so much. Once the singing stops is when I start to like the song, last minute is especially catchy. IMO, it could have gone on for longer because that ending seemed a bit sudden.
Well, I've never been a liker of power metal, only a select few songs with some similarities to PM. This song didn't change anything for me. I gave it the chance but didn't find anything I was looking for, except that final minute.

a select few songs I like which have some similarity to PM
Ayreon - Day Three: Pain
Thyrfing - The Breaking Of Serenity
Zero Hour - The Towers Of Avarice
other choices:
Anathema - Shroud Of Frost .. doom metal
Broken Social Scene - Looks Just Like The Sun - very laid back indie
Broken Social Scene - Lover's Spit - rather laid back indie
Electric Light Orchestra - Yours Truly, 2095 .. 80's synth rock
The National - Daughters Of The Soho Riots .. soft indie (very much worth the bother of finding)
Tommy Emmanuel - The Journey .. instrumental rock, cool guitaring
Yeah, the vocals aren't a big hit with a lot of people, my girlfriend hates them also, but I love 'em. And what about the female soprano you so conveniently forgot about?:p
Meanwhile, Thyrfing, Anathema, ELO, Zero Hour and Ayreon are great!
However, I'm not too fond of Tommy Emmanuel, since when I saw him live, he basically bungee jumped this phlegm in and out of his nose, whilst playing. It kind of distracted me from the music.
I also checked out Broken Social Scene from when you recommended them in this thread. Pretty cool band. I like You Forgot It In People.
Basically, I'm not going to dibs because only one song there is one that I haven't heard, and I can't be bothered finding it. :p

Broken Social Scene - Looks Just Like The Sun [4:23]
The song starts out with some chilled out acoustic guitar work. The relaxed chords and some slow tempo drumming really sets the mood for the entire track though. The vocals come in, set in the style of so many modern surf rock bands you'd hear on a Ministry of Sound Chill Out Sessions CD. This is by no means a bad thing.
The drumming is nothing special, but the guitar is. Very melodic, never intruding, it gives the song substance and verve. The lyrics, however, and by extension the vocals, tend to be somewhat insipid and repetitive. However, it's not annoying, really, just disappointing, since it really is a great song.
This structure more or less continues unabated until the very end when the song takes a pleasant twist towards the ambient, with light piano notes and a swirl of distortion that had me checking to see if a new song had started. About 3 seconds of what I suspect are aboriginal rhythm sticks, and the song is done.
Looking at the whole song, I quite liked it, and I'm giving it a 8.5/10.

Mike Oldfield - Tattoo
A ploddy start with percussive synths in major key. Bagpipes fade in and things sound quite happy and very scottish and bonnie. There are some more synths fading in, which are very melodic. I quite like it so far.
It's moving along quite slowly, but that's ok. 2 bagpipes now playing some harmonies, about 2 minutes in, the bagpipes stop and guitar starts playing similar stuff, then it plays sparse bits of lead as "choir" synth plays along. Building up, you can't tell, but it is. About 30 seconds later a quick drumroll starts and it bursts out with the bagpipes again and this is joined by fast military snare drumrolls.
It reminds me a bit of Lord Of The Rings, since there is a flute sonewhere in there playing some folky sounding parts. After the huge majestic sound dies down, the guitar plays some more sparse leads.

Yeah, proof it stops suddenly at 4:15, leading into Altered State, which I reviewed a while ago on one of these forums, and still have the song because I liked it. This one I liked too, and now I can play them in sequence, which rocks.
They say experimental is 10/12 experiment if go count the number of letters, or at least I do after a few drinks. Tattoo wasn't that experimental, but it was different enough and sounded good to me. I see now that Mike Oldfield interlinks song endings and starts, so you proably often get songs that don't seem quite complete, but they successfully morph into something else in the next track. Very melodic, upbeat and uplifting feel. I did like that.
I wouldn't give it 10/10, since things have to make me really go wow or some smilar expression for that, but it was still pretty nice to listen to and I would definitely keep it.

*drifts in a sea of nostalgia*
Oh right, the song...
It starts out with a standard pop guitar riff before Nat launches out her syncopated vocals. It's catchy, but not quite my cup of tea. Still I can appreciate her singing voice, it's very clear, emotional, and the fact she doesn't stick to a more standard rhythm is refreshing. The same can't be said for the guitar and drums, which are repetitive, numbing and everything that is bad about a lot of pop music.
About half way through, there's a bit of an interlude, where we get the same 5 second melody repeated over and over, whilst Natalie hums mindless nothings in the background. It's sort of a waste of space, but ah well, it stretches the song out.
Overall, Natalie carries this song on her tiny little shoulders. I can appreciate it, but I can't really enjoy it. The instruments themselves lead me to give this a 6.

Skyhooks - Million Dollar Riff
Hmm, what was I expecting from 70's rock??
It starts as fast and shuffly straightforward rock'n'roll, and I expect it to stay like this, a bit of wah work. "Million Dollar Riff" is repeated a few times over this bit. The key changes for the verse, the high pitched guy sings a line then the guitar plays a little riff, not a million dollar riff though.
The chorus comes about pretty quickly, "Million Dollar Riff" repeated over the starting music. Before I can write that sentence, it's gone back to the verse again. It's so fast paced. Lyrics seem to be about fame, and how they are going to achieve it with their Million Dollar Riff. The music is very upbeat, but it's not really exciting me.
Middle section comes in now, aaaand theres a humour element.. this middle section has all these guitar riffs from famous songs.. I hear Sunshine Of Your Love, Day Tripper, plus more I dont know. I like that, just like when SOAD put a bit of Night Rider in one of their songs, it brings a smile when you notice it.
Back to a verse again, different riffs between the singing this time. Still goes through as fast as ever, choruses too. Towards the end it's all chorus style, but all sorts of other singing and yelling. Hahaha, "Money, Money, thats what I want". No holding back there, I know to take a totally lighthearted view of this song now.
For under 4 minutes, there were a hell of a lot of verses and choruses. The music itself didn't really get me interested, but once the funny side became evident, the music didn't matter so much. Overall, it was ok, but not something I would want to listen to very often.

Goyte - A Distinctive Sound
Okay, so by "sampled based coolness," I am expecting something trip-hoppy. We'll see.
The song starts out with a sample of a man talking, then another man bust out a four-count to start the song. The drums come in playing a quick, but relatively simple beat. Some more samples of the man in the beginning of the song bounce around the drums, and soon he cues the bass which enters to play a groove while a guitar plays some muted chords.
At about 1:18 things change up a bit. The transition was kind of weird, but somehow worked. The drum beat changes again, and now some samples of a women singing and some random piano noises. Soon it goes back into the main beat.
Next it changes again, this time a little more mellow. The drums have backed down quite a bit to let some keyboard leads and some samples do their thing. Then it picks up again, this time with the bass louder and distorted, but then returns back to normal after a few measures.
Then at about 4:52 it pulls a "wtf?" on you and completely changes up for a little "cartoony" moment. It feels a little out of place, and quickly goes back into the main part, this time with the distorted bass again. Lots of samples are being played everywhere; one of them in particular is kind of annoying. The song then ends with the main guy suggesting that you play the record over again if there was "something you didn't understand."
I felt that the song was a little long and that occasionally the samples were slightly annoying and obnoxious, and some parts seemed a little out of place, most notably the "cartoony" bit. Other than that, the song was pretty decent. While I didn't like some of the sampling, I thought that a lot of them were pulled of really well. I also think that the main beat got repeated a bit too much, but at least it was good enough that it did not become tedious or unbearable. Overall, it was a cool song to listen to, but nothing that really caught my attention. 6/10

Man Man - I, Manface
Their site was unusual and the start of this song seems to fit what I saw.
Piano and some horns in an old sort of Tom Waits-esqe style. It's changing time sigs, or it seems to be. Theres a man singing.. indie style, he isn't really trying, but it fits very well. A minute in, drums and bass come in.. a modern touch, yet it keeps this nostalgic feel, which is really cool. I don't think I've heard stuff like this before.
Another guy is in the background, having a bit of a yell. Muted trumpets come in the perfect places. I wouldn't expect them at first, but it's not surprising when they pop up. A couple of girls add their voices to the chorus and it's adding a bar room style I guess. Again, they aren't really trying to sound like they have wonderfully beautiful voices, and that works. I'm liking this a lot.
The body of the song is just verse+chorus x 2, with some variations in yelling and singing and probably lyrics (I haven't been taking too much notice of the words). It's working so well.
At about 4 mins it gets sort of ambient with vocals going ahhh and feedback, but it's not quite the end. Now it's just a piano, a guy singing softly from close range and the other yelling from a distance. If these 2 voices were combined, it would be Isaac from Modest Mouse. I don't think this ending works that well, it's just too subdued compared to the character of the sound that came before it.
That was good, not like anything I've heard before, though I don't like it for that reason alone. I like it because it turned out so well. The ending was the only bit that didn't seem to fit, but they wrote it, so surely they have a reason. I'm impressed.. going to check out more of this band.

Well, I was expecting something similar to Irish folk music mixed with Indie, but I think I misread the description. These guys are just an indie band from Ireland.
The song starts out with a keyboard part that sounds strangely like an old computer games soundtrack. It's pleasing, but nothing exciting. The vocalist, who has an amazing voice, sings a few lines, and then the song changes at about 1:51. It's not a major change, just a different structure and some ambient effects.
The entire song pretty much repeats in this way for another few minutes. It reminds me a lot of A Silver Mt. Zion, actually. Some muted acoustic guitar chords take over from the keyboards, as the vocalist pours his heart out again. Then we get the first drums of the song at 4:00 or so, and what I suspect is a violin provides some emotional melodies.
A spoken part around 5 minutes in overlays the music, and as they end, the song fades away.
Overall, I was fairly neutral about the song. The vocalist is great, with a beautiful tone. However, the music just didn't draw me in. The violin was a nice touch, but the entire track was fairly... moderate. I'm giving it 5/10.

Don't really know what to expect, so hey-ho off we go.
The song begins with some trippy, psychedelic sounds and a sort of spacey atmosphere. Quickly these sounds are joined by a fast, fluid drum part on the snare and ride. This turns out to be a short intro before the durms settle down into a slower groove, accompanied by a sort of reggae off-beat synth part.
The bass finally appears around the 50 second mark, having been threatening to enter for quite some time now, and has a funk feel to it and is very forefront in the mix. So far the song has built up nicely and has developed a nice sense of momentum. This feeling of layering is completed when the vocals finally join us. Said vocals are slightly creepy, but add well to the overall psychedelic feeling of the song. It sort of sounds like a more marketable version of Primus, what with the weird vocals and imposing bass and all.
Close to the two minute mark we reach the chorus, complete with creepy vocals, which progress nicely and has a feeling of momentum being released. A nice comparison to the sttutering feel of the verse.
We return to the verse, and then back to the chorus without sufficient change to merit much description.
At the end of the second chorus, however, we have change aplenty. Oh yes indeed. The chorus expands with an influx of new parts. An off beat guitar, laced with piano add a rock to the track. These in turn give way to a clean guitar part doing some funky stuff with delay. Which in turn itself gives way to another verse followed by another chorus - this time with interesting guitar delay stuff over the top of it. The chours leads into an ending of sorts, with the guitar chucking out a few old-fashioned power chords. Afterwhich the song just sort of fades out with more creepy voices :-/
7/10
I liked it, perhaps not the best example of the genre but the bass was cool and the chorus was good. So yeah.

Wow, over two weeks late. That's impressive even for me.
Alabama 3 - U Don't Dans 2 Tekno Anymore
I must confess that in addition to the version Ali sent me I've been listening to a n acoustic re-working of it the band did of the track which may indeed be superior to this mix, but I'll proceed nonetheless because this one is more musically interesting.
Basically, if I didn't already know these guys were from London, I'd be convinced they're from Alabama because that seems to be the impression they like to create (and they do it very well too). The song seems to alternate between two main vocalists: the smoky-voiced lead singer (who also voices the other track I like by these guys: Too Sick To Pray) and the dude who kind of raps a bit towards the end, but in a really casual southern way.
The piece begins with duelling harmonicas and some light boogie piano, before the song kicks into gear with, err, a kick drum and the smoky guy I described singing about a girl getting 'the last train to mashville' yadda yadda (the lyrics are quite good I think). The melody slightly resembles Elvis' Don't Be Cruel.
The arrangement builds as the verse progresses from quiet piano flourishes to include more dual harmonicas and eventually a violin and more involved piano parts for the chorus, which culminates in the accusation that the girl don't dans 2 tekno anymore and humorous observations to those ends such as 'it's been a while since I saw your ultra-violet smile'.
The spoken word part is mildly amusing but fits very well into the song and is just short enough to avoid ruining the flow. The last verse deserves a mention too as it loses the drum and deviates somewhat from the main melody in a manner that recalls Lou Reed's Walk On The Wildside. Additionally, the piano becomes more prominent in later choruses, which repeats a few times as the piece finishes.
This is a really good tune, I must admit, though I'm guessing the acid house reference was meant for their entire catalogue rather than this track. A solid 7/10.

Guns N’ Roses – Better (Demo)
Hey, first Force Listening! I’ve been meaning to participate in one of these for a while.
Anyway, onto the song. I’ve been listening to quite a bit of GNR lately, and since I’m assuming this is new-GNR, I am actually quite eager to hear this song.
It start’s with a nice guitar melody, with distant drums and what may be Axl singing, though I’m 100% on that. Then the band comes in, with what is certainly Axl singing over a number of solid riffs, a short re-appearance of the intro melody and some very fine lead guitar work. Axl sounds like he is holding back a little to begin, but still quite good. It would be nice if his vocals were higher in the mix, but it’s only a demo after all. The bass and drums aren’t particularly noticeable, but they get the job done.
Then after a guitar solo at around 2:25, the song goes in a different direction which has tinges of industrial, and heavier guitar riffs than what has been seen so far. Then we eventually come to what is a typical Guns N’ Roses ending, with plenty of guitar fills and Axl’s vocals reaching their climax of the song. Then at the very end there is a short recurrence of the intro, which ties thing up quite nicely.
Overall, I found it relatively enjoyable and the guitar solos were rather tasty indeed. :D

Ghoul - As Your Casket Closes
This is very death metal from the outset. Doom laden guitars, a throbbing bassline and pounding drums set an intro that is suitable for thinking about the gates of hell bursting open one day. Then it builds up with snarls and guttural growling, and falls into a death metal verse that reminds me heavily of Deicide with simple chainsaw riffing and drums, and there is some lead fills that come up too. Some pummeling drums happen, and we drop into a deep dark slow riff and the drums change. Then we have a guitar solo with some drum fills, it sounds pretty good. Then we fall back into the main section, some pummeling and the outro, which is a thrashy kind of riff and its pretty good.
Rating - 7/10
I'm not a death metal fan at the best of times, but i don't mind it. This is a very suitable song for its purpose, its brutal and theres a definate malevolent feel coming from it. It's good.

Hole - Reasons to be Beautiful
I have this strange feeling that this will sound the same as every other Hole song I've heard, which isn't really a criticism either.
It's a long one at over five minutes, strange for a pretty straightforward punk song but nonetheless... Starts off with some relaxed electric guitar strumming, distorted three-chord stuff. Courtney's voice comes in strong pretty quickly, her sneer does actually remind me a lot of Kurt's. Maybe that's why they liked each other so much.
The piece seems to pick up a bit of energy as it progresses, both through the louder chorus and more impassioned vocals, which accordingly becomes more fractured and occasionally off-key. The highlight of the song is the bridge towards the middle, which starts off with a vaguely Beatle-y vibe with clean chord strums before becoming a bit more punky and aggressive.
The song is far too long, if it had been under three minutes I'd have been very impressed but there was no need to drag it out past five with long barely audible whining and numerous repetitions. 6/10.

Alright then.
Sinead O'Connor - Jerusalem 4:20
Starts off with some faint, faintly distorted, spacey electronicy sounds. They only last for a few seconds though, before what sounds like an acoustic guitar, set way back in the mix, starts up a fairly fast paced strumming. This is itself soon joined by some deep, liquid sounds that sound like they could be being made my many things. Vocals start non-lyrical before the first verse, but they're nothing extreme.
I like the first lyrical vocals. They're fairly quiet, so I mostly can't make out what she's saying, but it sounds important. Something about five years.. dying in five years, maybe. I like it, and the synth washes that are occasionally in the background.
Now what the hell is this. It suddenly went all funky and catchy. Repetition of the first verse, louder this time - definitely something about five years - and interspersed with the odd woop. Fast paced lyrics after that, so much so that I can pay attention to even less than I was before. To be honest, I'm mostly listening to the continuing funkiness supporting the whole deal. Because it rocks.
Quietens down after what I assume was the chorus (mentions of Jerusalem, at least), for just quiet, rapid percussion and occasional synth, and what is most likely whale noise. Then a whole wash of instruments crash back in - her voice amongst them - for continued enjoyment, before further Jerusalemming brings the song to a close.
That was..odd. But I really liked it. It's funny how the stranger a song is, the more there is to talk about, but the less you can think of to actually say. So I apologise for the lack of any solid description, anywhere. It's just good. Might have to buy myself a copy of The Lion and the Cobra sometime soon.

Couldn't decide on an Alabama 3 song, so whoever it is can have a choice. The Mannhai song is technically two separate tracks, but really Cloudberry Jam just introduces Spender, so I'd rather they were reviewed together.
Links should eventually be up, and will be available here (http://mxforums2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=RM&action=display&thread=1132227174).

It was made sometime last year, when MX was down for a few days, and then abandoned when it recovered.

Oh, well, I'd take you up on your listenings but I don't have time for listening and reviewing today so I will let somebody else claim it.

No problem; forced listening's pace is rarely as frenetic as it used to be. And excuse my tone before, I must have been intimidated by all the smilies :-/

Grand Magus - Summer Solstice
I've been really into the early Soundgarden stuff lately, so hopefully this is similar with more grunt.
Ohh yes! Deep guitar intro with a swing feel. A few bars in is a bit of lead guitar with wah over the top. It's chunky hard rock. Sometimes I just want to hear stuff like this - full cream THICK guitar with that slight bluesy feel.
The guy starts singing, has the appropriate voice, a few harmonies every now and then. Some occult sounding lyrics. He could be singing about some RPG in the chorus, "Fire magic".
After the chorus is a nice lead break. It's pretty basic actually, the verse following sounds like the one before, just some different words. Chorus the same. Who cares, its good foot stopming music. I'd like to have this on in the car.
Cool solo in the solo section. Chorus to end.
There's not really not much to say once you describe the verse and chorus.. eh. It was good, but there's nothing "wow, amamzing" about it. Is it even meant to be? Probably not. Not the type of thing I could listen to any time, but lately, stuff like this has been on my wish list.

Mine!
On the condition (not really, ill do it anyway) that 'tender (or anyone else) answer the following question because I know he frequents this thread:
What are some bands similar to Young Heart Attack and The Wildhearts? Im looking for some head bopin' staright out Rock N' Roll, and you introduced to me the two bands listed above so I figure... you know any more? =/ Thanks!
The National - Daughters of the Soho Riots
I’m a fan of ‘beautiful’ music, and I’ve heard The National being mentioned beside The Arcade Fire, one of my favorite bands, so I figured I’d give this one a shot.
We start off with a simple acoustic arpeggio, sort of slow and breezy helped out with a light beat of a bass in the background, something like you’d hear in the ‘reflection scene’ in many movies. Not haunting, but more of ‘thinking music’. It’s not a long drawn out into to ‘get you into the mood’ as many songs that start out in the same manner are – the vocals come in very soon after the start of the song. They’re deeper than I expected, but they fit the music well I think, it’s not so much singing as it is talking with a tune - it’s not harsh, yet not so soft as to make you think that this is just another pop song. I like the lyrics, there definitely not generic and have a meaning of their own
“break my arms around my love… you were right about the end, it didn’t make a difference… I’m here to take you now, out among the missing sons and daughters of the Soho Riots…”
This is a minimalistic song, driven by the same sort of basic melody, but it gets somewhat ‘heavier’ as more instruments come in – the well placed and scattered piano notes complement the guitar pretty well. There’s hints of hi-hat work, just a very simple tit-tat-tit, mostly just for atmosphere. The individual guitar notes give way to some strumming, and some bass, but again, it’s a device to build up the piece to stop it from going stale. It calms down again during the outro and that’s about it.
For what it’s trying to do, the song works pretty well. It’s not meant to be mindblowing, or overtly catchy, Keeping it simple and giving it mood and atmosphere seems to be the name of the game here, but I figure, give it the chance, and this song’ll grow on you like cancer.

I'm not 'tender, but I can probably guess and endorse his answers. Ginger, obviously, Halfway To Gone and Therapy? are pretty much givens. The new Buckcherry album is great too.

When it comes to the States I'm no really that bothered because they have Mountain Dew, which I can happily survive on until I get home.
Still, surprising to find it that far afield.

These guys, and others, have you well covered. There's more than enough to keep you going for a while just exploring the extended family, so they're good suggestions. Also I have to leave in about five minutes, so I really don't have time to dig up some good suggestions or to explain further :-/ Sorry. I'll just take the time to say that if you like Super$hit 666, you'll most likely like Electric Eel Shock and (some) Boris (the rock-Boris, not the drone-Boris, even though they're the same band). Happymeal, in Alt/Indie, amongst others, should be able to fill you in better on them.
