John Frusciante - Shadows Collide With People
John Frusciante is the guitarist from Red Hot Chili Peppers, who was with them to make Mother’s Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By The Way. He has released a number of solo albums, and Shadows Collide With People is his most commercially successful to date, his latest effort, Will To Death, having not been in the shops long enough at the time of writing to compete.

Whilst the track names may seem to indicate this album is very strange and not very accessible, in fact it is very easy to get into in my opinion. Admittedly he does use some rather weird-sounding instruments on many of the tracks, and there are a few strange instrumentals, but in fact many of the songs have very simple, memorable melodies. The lyrics are somewhat interesting, such as Regret, which simply consists of ‘I regret my past, stay alone’ repeated many times. That sounds like it should be boring and repetitive, but in fact it’s one of the highlights of the album.
Probably one of the most surprising aspects of the album for Chilis fans is that John’s voice sounds nothing like it does on their records when he backs Anthony Kiedis. He actually has a much lower, rockier voice that is very enjoyable to listen to.
The album plays very well as whole, there wouldn’t be any point for me to do a track-by-track analysis because it all flows and merges into one piece of music a lot of the time. He has got some variety in the record as well, with some nice upbeat songs like This Cold making a change from the more mid-tempo songs that make up most of the album. Other highlights include Every Person and Second Walk.
This album has a really nice groove to it, and if you hate the Chili Peppers you may well like this, likewise if you are a Chilis fan don’t expect this to sound much like their music. Worth checking out whatever your preconceptions are about Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Review:
After John Frusciante's last solo album "To Record Only Water For Ten Days" and the last album with his band(Red Hot Chili Peppers) "By the Way", John Frusciante comes back big time and produces a great album that emphasizes his deep connection with music and his love for it, if its by a melody song or kick *** guitar solo.
Songs Review:
1. Carvel - the song begins with a weird slow intro and bursts into a medium/fast song. This is a great song to begin with and really shows John's singing skills.
2. Omission - a song written by John Fruscinate and his friend Josh Klinghoffer, which has a combination of both singing together different lyrics. the song then goes into a fast rocking part and ends the song with a awesome guitar solo by John himself. One of my favorites.
3. Regret - a melody song with only 2 lines of lyrics, "I regret my past, stay alone". when I first heard the song I was really suprised John regrets his past, but then i heard an interview saying the song isn't serious, and that he doesn't regret his past which was a relief.
4. Ricky - another melody song with deep lyrics which i believe is about his past and how he was afraid to be himself.
5. Second Walk - After a melody song, the album come back alive by a hard rocking drum intro and an amazing solo by John which shows his skills with the electric guitar. One of my favorites songs in the album.
6. Every Person - that is a problem in the album in my opnion, after a hard rocking song we get another melody which slows the album down.
7. -00Ghost27 - the first instrumental in the album which I honestly think they just took a broken cd played it in a cd player and recorded. it really sounds awful and doesn't relate to the album in my opnion.
8. Wednesday's Song - a medium tempo song that goes into a catchy chorus. I particulary like the bridge in the song.
9. This Cold - a fast song that starts with just guitar and drums and then at the second chorus you get awesome bass lines that goes throughout the song. Now I have no idea whether Flea plays the bass to this song or John, but the bass is really incredible in this song and adds a lot. One of my favorites songs in the album.
10. Failure 33 Object - the second instrumental of the album which is better than the first however doesn't have a good feeling with the album. the instrumental is guitar with loads of effect and with some computer effects as well, sounds like a techno song.
11. Song To Sing When I'm Lonely - a nice medium tempo song with another catchy chorus that has deep lyrics.
12. Time Goes Back - a medium tempo song which uses the bass in a good way, even if it doesn't have an amazing bass line it sure adds a great touch to the song. The song also shows John's singing skills to sing back up vocals and the vocals themselves.
13. In Relief - the song begins with an interesting intro but good, and goes into a melody song that doesn't boring you.
14. Water - the song starts with a weird intro as if the song was an instrumental but then goes into the funkiest song in the album with amazing bass lines and guitar lines that are put together in such a good way. the song has a catchy chorus with a high vocals by John. the song then goes into a rocking outro with an amazing guitar solo that ends the song. One of my favorites in the album.
15. Cut-Out - the song starts as a medium tempo song with a great bass based chrous that bursts into an a hard rock part with amazing drums skills done by either Chad Smith or Josh Klinghoffer.
16. Chances - a kinda boring song with a medium tempo speed that again I don't understand why it was put after a hard rock song.
17. 23 Go In To End - the last instrumental which in my opnion is beautiful and shows that John has skills with music even if its not played by guitar. a truely amazing music piece.
18. The Slaugther - the perfect song to end this album which has a catchy chrous and a great feel of music with deep lyrics that truely reflects John's skills.
Overall Rating:
3.5/5

I love the song Omission! IMO, it's the best song on the CD. Oh, and it's good to know that he doesn't really regret his past! RHCP will live in my heart forever. :)

I think you are a little harsh on the score for this album. its full of great songs and you put it down because you dont like the melodic songs so much....JF is all about that, so if you don't like the style of music don't bother to slag it off. However, if you do like melodic music JF is your man, IMHO the best and most underrated songwriter in music right now. His music is just simply beautiful and touches me like no other artists music ever has. definite 5/5 but as JF is in the middle of releasing an album a month things are only getting better...each album is better than the one before it with plans for another couple of heavy rocking albums similar to the velvet underground and then a purely acoustic album to follow. what a legend...

 You wanna see 2 reviews that are for the exact same CD? I like this review, I don't know about the other one because I've never seen it.
Anyway, I love John Frusciante and "Shadows Collide with People" is one of the best CDs that came out this year! (Green Day's "American Idiot" was pretty cool too.)
Also, I'd like to agree with you people that said that they're glad "Regret" wasn't true.
...A 3.5? dude, that score sucks!

good man...not sure about the green day =/
i actually wanna see reviews for JF's other albums. If you didn't know, he released a few CD's recently, one being "The Will To Death" which IMHO is better that Shadows, and an EP - the Dc EP - which is possibly the most beautiful 15 minutes of music i have ever heard. I just want to make people see John Frusciante because lots of people say they have never heard any of his music, and i like to pass on music which i think is good for others to enjoy. This guy is excellent, so i would like to see what people think if they listen to his music, because its very good!
