Free Assembly of Dust/Phish Download!
Hey everyone, I am a member of Assembly of Dust's street team. If
you don't already know AOD they are a jam band and they are giving away the track ³Arc of the Sun² featuring Mike Gordon (of Phish) on their site http://www.aodust.com! Its worth giving a listen to! AOD is giving away a new track every Tuesday until July 14th featuring artists like Jerry Douglas, John Scofield, Richie Havens, Al Schnier and more! Again sorry if this feels spammy but I was
eager to share the news

Damn jpj have fun at Phish. I am regretting not trying to see them. From pictures and videos, the light shows look like the best lights you can find at a concert anywhere. I almost feel like it would be worth going just for that.
Fortunately with the new album and all, it looks like this won't be a one and done kinda tour and i'll catch them in the winter, spring, next summer... sometime cause they're definitely not done.

Hey everybody, enjoy some good dead from '74. Great 3 night run at Winterland.

Phish was amazing last night, incredible set list.
Opened with Golgi Apparatus, Chalkdust Torture, Bouncing Around the Room, and Wolfman's Brother. It Doesn't get much better than that. Second set opened with Down with Disease>Free, also had a great Squirming Coil>You Enjoy Myself, and they encored with Bike (the Pink Floyd song).
Blew my mind.

Speaking of festivals, I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to go to Gathering Of The Vibes. What do you guys think of the lineup? http://gatheringofthevibes.com/2009/2009+band+lineup
It's weaker than last year but CSN, Levon, Ratdog, DSO, etc. is probably enough to have a pretty good time...
I'd go for George Clinton & P-Funk.

Saw Phish this last weekend for the Alpine run. It was my first two Phish shows ever and the best concerts I've ever been to. Absolutely amazing. Had chills going down my spine all the time and danced my *** off, really fun time. Judging by these two shows, they're definitely back!
Trey's soloing was epic, beautiful, funky, and face melting all at the same time, and page played the best keyboard solos i've ever heard come out of his fingers. Jon played in top form, and Mike even had a couple super funky bass solos.

vibes is supposed to be a really good time, in a really good place. i would go based solely on what people that have been there have told me about it.

06-23-2009, 10:23 PM
It used to be in upstate NY which is beautiful but it got moved a few years back to Bridgeport, CT which is kinda like the armpit of America. The park Vibes takes place in is actually really pretty and a great place for a festival, but then right across the street you've got crackhouses and projects. It's an interesting combo. I went for one day last year and it was really great. NRPS and BK3 were great, Taj Mahal solid, Mike Gordon pretty meh... and then Phil put on an absolutely incredible show. Mindblowing. Unfortunately this year has no NRPS, BK3 or Phil but I think I could still find a good time. A little pricey and my boss will never forgive me for taking so many off days but I'll probably do it anyways.

no rothbury for me :(
im tryin to hit up 3Gs at nelson ledges that weekend ... three nights of DARK STAR!!!
what festivals is phil playin this year, if any? of course i wouldnt mind if he isnt playin any, if the reason is a DEAD FALL TOUR!

Phil's taking the summer off to hang out with his kids. There's actually no Phil & Friends right now cause the members' contracts expired in January '09 and he hasn't put together a new group yet. Also, according to dead.net, there won't be anymore Dead shows in 2009 except for Rothbury. I expect them to tour again next spring/summer though. The last tour was too good and too much fun not to try it again.
Damn it they better tour again.

Hopefully I'll make it to one of the fests there. Gratefulfest, Mothership Landing, or Hookah Weekend would all be tight.

I think I'm gonna be able to make it to Gratefulfest; Rothbury is just too expensive. NLQP is supposed to be a great spot and paying way less for a nice intimate festival with a bunch of Grateful Dead music doesn't sound like the worst idea.
robo2448

It sounds sweet, but I've seen a handful of news articles lately about the police there just being totally out of hand. They're pissed about the drugs the festival brings so they're busting everyone. Be careful. An intimate festival with lots of Grateful Dead music sounds like exactly what I need right now.

Yeah man, I've been hearing the same ****.. Just be careful and use common sense and people should be fine. There are undercovers at any festival but I've definitely been hearing some bad stuff about NLQP lately..
On a more positive note, I've heard the festival grounds there are beautiful and I'd love to go sometime.

Yeah security seems to be tightening up a bunch of places. Even Mountain Jam, which is usually super laid back, was invaded by the town's cops who made a bunch of arrests. My friend just told me about getting a $426 fine for rolling a joint at Phish... seems like the cops need to relax a little bit.
So Phish is hosting a festival the weekend of Halloween who else is pumped.
EDIT: But it looks like it's probably gonna be in California so the chances of me going are pretty slim :upset:

Ha, it's pretty difficult to put the whole festival into words right now but the entire weekend was magical.
Best shows of the weekend in my opinion were Bisco, STS9, String Cheese, and the Dead. But I pretty much expected that going into it. The Dead closed with US Blues during sick fireworks. I really enjoyed the China Cat they played also. Except me and my friends decided to leave for a bit during a really intense space and drums sequence.
SCI show had the most antics and there was such a positive vibe flowing during their sets. Big inflatable balls traveling among the crowd, three incredible hoopers performing in/around the crowd on stands, and curtain dancers or whatever those people are. Simply put there was just a lot going on during Cheese and it was all so great.
The forest was amazing as always. Ha, never been anywhere like it.
Unfortunately I missed out on some of the surprises of the festival, although it's impossible to catch them all. One I was really disappointed about missing (since I'm a huge Lotus fan) was that Lotus played a secret day set in the forest with the bass player of Future Rock and the sax player of Big Gigantic stepping in for a tune or two.
But the whole festival was a great experience that I will never forget. Let's just say I'll be back for more next year.

Hi guys I am just starting to download some Grateful Dead shows off of archive.org but I'm not really sure where to start because there are thousands. I was just wondering what shows are regarded as their best. Thanks.
Edit: the only show I have is 5/8/77 at cornell
Check out some other shows from May '77, 3/22-3/23/68, 3/1/69, 12/31/71, 8/27/72, and the summer of '90 if you're interested in good later Dead.

My friend's said Warren had his guitar so loud during the Dead set that you couldn't even hear Bob half the time. As a huge Dead fan, my roommate was needless to say, very pissed.
But I heard good things. Lotus was supposed to be off the hook, had a cool, dark Spiritualize that I need to hear. SCI sounded like it was pretty crazy, and they said the props just added to that. Like Cirque de Soleil mixed with a String Cheese show haha.
I also heard that STS9 did a lot of remixes and newer material, which I'm not so disappointed about missing. They did play Circus though, I would've liked to have seen that.
Everyone I talked to had an awesome time though, I'll be checking it out next year for sure.

Check out some other shows from May '77, 3/22-3/23/68, 3/1/69, 12/31/71, 8/27/72, and the summer of '90 if you're interested in good later Dead.
Good call with the summer '90, so underrated. Spring and fall '90 worth checking out as well, and all of '89. Real high point in their career. Best run of shows since '77 in my opinion.
Rothbury sounds like it was awesome, kind of like the dream festival. Sucks Warren was drowning out Bobby. When I saw the Dead in May Warren was fantastic but Bob was loud and clear too. His rhythm playing was spectacular, especially on Morning Dew, and it was very audible.
I gotta go to Rothbury. Everything I hear just makes it sound so magical. Maybe next year.

Any of you guys ever hear of Roots Of Creation? They're kinda like a mix of reggae/dub, jam-rock, and electronica. Definitely worth checking out if you're into any of those genres, they're on the archive.
I also highly recommend Euforquestra (jazzy, world influenced, jam music), the show I have is pretty awesome: http://www.archive.org/details/euf2007-08-16.flac

Man, I went to Gathering of the Vibes last weekend, it was so incredible. Unbelievable craziness. Got there Thursday early entry for Donna Jean Band, Dark Star Orchestra and The Machine (Pink Floyd cover group). Unfortunately it rained hard for like 8 straight hours, from the early evening (like 530) until around 2 in the morning. Walking back to my tent after Dark Star there were like 6 inch deep rivers in place of streets. But the music was incredible. I wasn't expecting that much of Donna but her band was fantastic. Her guitar player Jeff Mattson from the Zen Tricksters plays Jerry as well as anyone. Midnight Moonlight and Samson & Delilah were the highlights. Dark Star shortened their 4 hour show to 3+ because of the weather but it was damn good. Original setlist with a bunch of songs dedicated to the night's weather. China > Rider opener, fun Cold Rain & Snow, The Mighty Quinn encore, Shakedown, Sugar Magnolia, Alligator > Dancin' In The Streets, Playin' In The Band > Crazy Fingers (awesome)... Really good show. Went back to the camp to warm up and smoke before the machine and got to the machine really late, far too late but caught some of their set. They nail Pink Floyd, then attach really cool, interesting jams onto the end. Did an intense jam of The Other One. I really want to see a full show, but probably caught about an hour.
Damn that's a lot of writing, I'll write about the other days later.
Cold Rain & Snow was always one of my favorite songs

Especially when you get to hear it outside at a festival when it is pouring. Last year at vibes, we had hours of terrible thunderstorms then Phil came out and played Cold Rain & Snow. This year we had 8 straight hours of rain (a really cold rain too) and Dark Star played it in the middle of the rainstorm. Phil was better but both were lots of fun.

Sounds awesome Robo. DSO has actually made me enjoy the Mighty Quinn. They love that song, it seems they play it every time they do an original these days (same with Alligator, but who's complaining?).
10K was pretty massive. It's hard to say anything else other than PANIC. Goddamn. Two absolutely monster sets. Too many highlights to list but they brought the heat.
robo2448
07-30-2009, 09:37 PM
DSO Alligator at Vibes was really nice. Hadn't heard them do that before (or Mighty Quinn actually) but they did really well with both of them. Forgot to mention the Catfish John with Donna too... beautiful.
Figure I'll continue with Friday at vibes- started off the day with Cornmeal at the small stage and they put on a fantastic show. If you like bluegrass, jam whatever go see Cornmeal. Cornmeal, Tea Leaf Green, and Railroad Earth are the best bands touring in their prime right now. Right after Cornmeal we headed over to JJ Grey and Mofro who I wasn't too familiar with but he ended up putting on one of the best sets of the weekend. Really good funky, southern soul music that was perfect for a hot and sunny afternoon.
Skipped Keller cause he does nothing for me, then came back for P-Funk who were awful. Biggest disappointment of the weekend for sure. Had this huge fancy show with something like 7 guitarists, 12 singers, and terrible music. Would never see them again. Deep Banana Blackout played next and completely blew them away. Dedicated a song to Merle Saunders and finished with a nailed cover of Santana's Soul Sacrifice to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. moe was the Friday headliner and their first set was pretty good and then some guy came out and said they were going to wait to continue to see if the storm would hit us or pass. Then he came out again 5 minutes later and said we were in the middle of an electrical storm and we had to go hide in our cars immediately. Craziness. I have never seen so much lightening. ****ing crazy storm. It was a miracle nobody got struck by lightening. Eventually the weather let up and we went over to check out Lettuce's late night set. Awesome funk. Check them out if they're in your area. They can jam like crazy.

I saw Phish at Red Rocks last night (30th) and it was absolutely incredible. I was a bit (modest) buzzed so I'm not entirely sure of the set list, but I remember a Mikes > H2O > Weekapaug > SOTGhost. As well as a Divided Sky opener and Ocelot was somewhere in the first set. Needless to say it was awesome. I'm not going again until the fourth night but I might go onto the hill for tomorrow's show. Either way I'll keep you guys posted.

The last night of Phish was absolutely crazy! A really nice first set, but the second set was the mind blower. YEM and then BILLY KREUTZMAN came out for Undermind, Seven Below and a few others. Absolutely incredible. Not to mention the Slave to the Traffic Light Encore. Probably one of the best things I've ever been witness too!
Hopefully one day I'll get to see Phish at Red Rocks, but I'm going to the 8/15 show in MD so I've got that going for me.

For you lovers of Terrapin Station: http://www.whitegum.com/aaroness.htm
Very in depth article talking about the song's creation and live performance, interesting read. And also, I'd recommend checking out the 3/18/77 version mentioned at the bottom of the article. It's the only time the song was played beyond the second section of the song (main Terrapin theme).
While on the topic, I've started getting into live Dead more and more, any specific shows you guys consider the best of the best? I know I've seen a handful of dates tossed around here, but I don't really remember which. Thanks dudes.

Live/Dead is completely and utterly mind-blowing to me. That Dark Star is what turned me into a dead head (albeit I'm still a very new one) and still takes me on a journey if I let it...
here are a couple that everyone should have:

If you want to download the first one, just change details to download in the url and get whichever format you want there. As far as official releases go, I'd also check these out:
the Vault series (one from the vault, two from the vault, etc) these are all winners.
Hundred Year Hall
Live at the Cow Palace: New Year's Eve 1976
Ladies and Gentlemen... The Grateful Dead
Fallout from the Phil Zone
As you can tell, I'm a pretty big fan of the Pigpen era... I'd be more than happy to recommend shows from a different time period, though, if that's what you're looking for.

^those are some pretty good suggestions. A couple up there I still need to hear. 3 From the Vault (2/19/71) took place 5 minutes away from me in the boring suburbs of nyc. Really weird place for the dead to play but all the shows from the capitol theater are awesome, especially (2/18/71) which has a bunch of songs debuted for the first time including Bertha, Greatest Story Ever Told, Johnny B Goode, and Wharf Rat which is played in the middle of one of the best Dark Star's ever in my opinion. 6/24/70 is another essential capitol theater show. new riders opening, acoustic dead, and 2 electric dead sets. Dark Star > Attics Of My Life > Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia Jam > Dark Star > St. Stephen > China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is a pretty cool trip.
There are tons and tons of incredible dead shows out there, pretty much any day of the year. Today, August 10th, the Dead played a great show in 1982. Check it out- http://www.archive.org/details/gd82-08-10.sbd.miller.12453.sbeok.shnf

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm diggin the '77 shows so far. This 5/28/77 has awesome sound quality.
Let us know how the DT show goes, Robo. I just saw him in May for my birthday, the songs from the new album sound great live. And of course he had some old favorites as well (Crow Jane, Afro Blue, etc.)
I'm gonna have a pretty good concert run coming up: Roots of Creation in September, Umphreys, Umphreys again, and STS9 playing three fridays in a row in October, few smaller festivals thrown in there, should be pretty awesome.
And finally, any of you guys listen to Mr. Blotto?

Derek Trucks is such a titan. I've actually missed his band whenever I've had the chance to see them, unfortunately, but I'm hoping to get into one of the ABB/Panic shows in Chicago. I'll probably be dead after a night of Trucks, Haynes, and Herring.
As far as my concert schedule goes, I got a maybe on the Panic/ABB, then the Detroit Jazz Fest which is stacked this year and is FREE all weekend long. Then Greensky Bluegrass sometime in the middle of September (does anyone listen to these guys? Bus if you're looking for some bluegrass you should check them out, great pickers and their from Kalamazoo so they're around Michigan a lot). The night after that is pretty exciting for me and my group (the Live Music Alliance) - we're bringing in Perpetual Groove to play at the Blind Pig right here in Ann Arbor! Again Bus if you're around the area you should come hit me up.
Also to Bus, are you going to Umphrey's at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor? Let me know if you're in town for that. I probably won't go but I'll be chillin. STS9 and Bisco are rolling through sometime this fall too so I think I'll go to both of those. Also Railroad Earth Halloween show in Royal Oak. A couple of my friends and I are going as the Grateful Dead this year.

magicbus, I saw Derek Trucks three days after you on May 31 and he was on fire then. It was at Mountain Jam so he only played for an hour (maybe hour and 15 minutes) but man, they smoked. The My Favorite Things was trancendent. I'm excited to see them again in a couple hours.
Lunch, you should see Trucks with his own band. It's a different trip from the Allmans.
Greensky is great, I had a chance to see them last spring but didn't go cause I was tired or something. Guess I didn't have a reason, I definitely should have gone. They're real good.
I've seen Perpetual Groove a couple times, most recently late night set at Vibes. They're great.
I'm gonna try to see the Allmans/Panic tour but that might not pan out. Hopefully Donna Jean Band next week and Black Crowes/Levon in September.

Lunch, I'm thinking of checking out Umphrey's in both Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, but if I can only make one it would probably be in AA. And I'd be down to check out the Perpetual Groove show too. I'll hit you up if I'm in town for sure. My brother is actually gonna have a pretty tight house this year, and since I've graduated I will probably be up there quite a few times, so if you wanna smoke/chill/party it could happen.

Just got back from Derek Trucks, it was pretty sweet. It was free and outside which was a good start, and it didn't rain which was nice since it rained all day. The opener was Jake something, the guy famous for his cover of While My Gently Weeps with ukele on youtube. Missed most of his set but caught some including a brilliant While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Derek Trucks Band is a mindblowing guitarist, but man that is just all around band. I love the singer, such a great voice. And Kofi Burbridge and the drummer are really talented too. Played a bunch of stuff from the new album and a few older songs and covers. The highlight of the show was Ravi Coltrane (John Coltrane's son) and Eric Krasno (guitarist of Soulive and Lettuce) sitting in for Get Out My Life, Woman segued into Jimi Hendrix's Who Knows from Band Of Gypsys. Krasno also sat in for Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up which was kinda funny cause I've seen Krasno 3 times in the last 3 weeks and he's played Move On Up every time but it's been with different bands and really awesome every time so I can't complain. Sweet Inspiration, Joyful Noise, and Anyday were really great too.
Speaking of good music, has anyone heard David Crosby's solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name? It's a fantastic album, all of the Grateful Dead and CSNY appear on it and I think a few members of Jefferson Airplane too. Listening to Laughing right now, good stuff.

Yeah I've been hearing that rumored for about a week now but I was still a little surprised when they officially announced it last night. Seems kinda odd for Bobby and Phil to play with John, but it could be a good combination. I'd rather see them continue with Billy, Mickey, Warren & The Dead but it's good to see Bobby and Phil making music together again.
Saw Phish last night, they played a really odd set list with a lot of newer stuff, including a debut of a Fishman song called Party Time that was really fun. Other highlights were The Sloth, Axilla, Tweezer, and Good Times, Bad Times/Tweezer Reprise for the encore.
All in all it was fun, but I felt like show didn't flow very well, but that comes with the territory with Phish.

Sweet. I really should have seen Phish this summer, I'm just lazy and cheap so I didn't go. It's also a bitch to get to long island which is the closest they came to me. wish they would have just played nyc.
Anyone here dig Grace Potter? The Nocturnals got a new bassist and 2nd guitarist this summer, they've turned into a monster rock and roll band. Ah Mary is such a good song.

the dead always played so well at msg. except when they didn't. but 9/18/87 is such a damn good show. holy dew is a good way to sum up the highlights, but the whole show is really solid. Except Walkin' Blues, man I hate that song. Totally takes all the energy out after a really energetic and well done Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree opener.

Snuck into the Toyota Park Phish show a couple weeks ago and almost got kicked out. First Phish show and it was pretty cool but I doubt I will ever actually pay to see them.. They were fun but by the end of it I was pretty much ready to go.
I understand why people do Phish tour and whatnot but there are so many other bands out there with more intimate and energetic shows. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to switch it up like this, but I was walkin' the grounds at SPAC last weekend I heard a young man talkin' BIG about a reggae project in the works, with some heavy hitters paying tribute to the music of Phish. He said he's heard Toots, Steel Pulse, Gregory Isaacs, and Burning Spear are on board.
I haven't been able to find anything on it..Anyone else heard anything??? Sounds like it could be decent...Those are some fat cats...
Great energy last Sunday..Peace!
**Would have started a new thread but for some reason, do not have access yet (2 days after I joined) so I cannot start my own thread???
Haven't heard anything about that but it would be pretty cool.

Someone on Jambase thinks Henry K Prodections is doing this proiject, which would be awesome!!! He's already put out numerous tribute records, the best being "Fire on the Mountain -A Tribute to The Grateful Dead"
I found one other reggae tribute to Phish, but it's all instrumental, and it sucks (my opinion, naturally).
Now I'm really curious...guess we'll have to wait.
This got me curious about Phish tributes and I found The String Quartet Tribute to Phish, and so far I've only listened to YEM but it is amazing.

Yeah I missed that when they were here too... bummer. Sounds like an incredible co-bill.
Railroad Earth has become one of my favorite bands this summer, them with the Allman Brothers is gonna be a sweet combo as well.
I saw a Pink Floyd cover band called The Machine last night. It was an incredible show, they really nail Floyd and jam and try new things live much more than Floyd ever did. The $40 tickets combined with a dick security guard who took my weed, hash, and a piece left me feeling really broke though. But yeah, The Machine are tight, check them out if they're in your area anytime.

I went to Charter One Pavilion last night with a bunch of friends just to chill outside the venue and listen to Panic/Allmans tear it up and both certainly did.
I really wish I was in there. First night Panic covered Turn On Your Lovelight with Warren Haynes and Gregg Allman. And Buddy Guy came out and played with Allman Brothers for a few songs both nights. And Derek Trucks stepped in with Panic for a few tunes both nights. I wish I could have seen all this because just hearing it was magical.

Wow that's pretty sweet that you got to hear it all for free. Was there kind of a party going on outside the venue, like a bunch of ticketless hanging out and trying to hear what they could? That'd be cool. I know I read back in the days of The Dead huge New Years Eve shows in San Fran/Oakland, Bill Graham used to set up huge speakers outside the venue so ticketless deadheads could congregate and listen to the show.
Speaking of free music, I saw John Fogerty for free in NYC last night. It was a really good. He's got a new solo album out and played a bunch of stuff from that, maybe the whole album. The new material was mostly (maybe all) covers of old country songs. His band was great, they sounded like Levon Helm's band or New Riders of the Purple Sage on the old country songs, real good stuff. Played a bunch of CCR too- Born On The Bayou, Lookin' Out My Backdoor, Keep On Chooglin', Fortunate Son, Bad Moon Rising and Proud Mary. Maybe 1 or 2 others. Unfortunately I got to the show late but only missed five songs, 4 of which were new songs. The show was really short, closer to an hour than hour and a half and there was no encore which was kinda lame but Fogerty rocks so it was really fun. He was such a good songwriter. Singing and guitar playing were as good as ever too.

Yup, there were people everywhere. My friends and I had to move locations a few times. First we were on a beach outside the venue where there was a large gathering of people chilling, drinking, etc. but cops came after Widespread Panic was done playing and told everyone to move on. Then we went to a different spot that was good to hear the Allman Brothers and just hung out with people listening there too. Found some super delicious (and special) rice krispie treats there too:p

Nice, I bet Gathering of the Vibes was a fun time. Unfortunate that you had bad luck with the edibles though.. At Rothbury this year I saw a guy who had a special-ice cream stand selling cups of ice cream and it looked like he was sellin out fast. I wanted to try some but was low on funds so I passed. It looked awesome but I wonder whether it was legit or not..
robo2448
09-04-2009, 11:30 AM
Yeah... I mean the problem is they usually are legit actually, but just have so little weed in them. You kinda need to eat between .5-1 grams to get really high from my experiences and when they sell edibles for $5 it won't have very much weed in it or won't be very good weed. I had some rice krispies at Vibes that tasted exactly like really good weed so there was definitely stuff in there, but I guess just not enough.

Listened to the rest of the first show through Scarlet>Fire. Well, actually I skipped Sailor>Saint (see, they're just like the real Dead!). Althea and Scarlet>Fire were hot. With a little more work these guys could be real serious. I wonder what the future holds though. I've heard rumors about a run in NYC, possibly at the Beacon. Bring on the tour! John K sounded great once he loosened up a bit and started to assert himself.
Greensky brought it like they always do. Robo if you (or anyone else), have a chance to see them, definitely don't pass it up. Great, real bluegrass music from guys who are willing and able to "jam" but are well-versed in the traditional roots.
PGroove was really hot too, better than I remember them being. It was a great kick-off show for our group. Turnout was strong and people there had a ton of fun. They opened with an insane Teakwood that went on and on (in a good way). Other highlights were This Must Be the Place (Talking Heads song) and Three Weeks. I even got a chance to talk with Brock when we were hanging out before the show, he's a really cool guy.

Haha I'm pretty much with ya on that one. I wasn't really that impressed with Peaceblaster and have been hesitant to see STS9 for that reason, but their latest sets sound like they've been mixing it up a little bit. And I did say I would see them the next time they came around since I missed them at Rothbury.
Now on the other hand, I said the exact same thing about Bisco haha. And Bisco tears that **** up. They've got the improv element that I love so much, and that STS9 doesn't seem to have much of anymore. So it basically comes down to this: I can afford to see both, it's just a question of whether or not I can get some people to drive to Kzoo with me to see the Biscuits.
And I've never been the the Kalamazoo State Theater, but it sounds like it would be a cool place to see them.

Yep, the Biscuits' ability to jam and improv is unreal. In my opinion, the best imrpovisational act in the scene. Tribe used to improv but I really feel like they've lost the enthusiasm to do so and now prefer to play songs more with their laptops than their actual instruments. Pretty sad considering they had so much ability and potential.
Well, hopefully both you and I will find our way to K-Zoo State Theatre to rage it..

Yeah I agree with you on the Tribe, they rarely stray from the normal structure of their songs these days. And if you haven't heard their latest single yet, you may be even more disappointed (but I guess you can't assume what the new album will be like just based on one single).
I'm also down for some Bisco SBDs if you feel like uploading any. I have a handful of shows from '09 (2/15, 4/20, 6/27), but only audience recordings. I've been noticing they are seriously on fire this year, that gives me a lot of hope for these Midwest shows..

If you don't know who John Cipollina is, he was the lead guitarist of Quicksilver Messenger Service, a late 1960's psychedelic San Francisco band. He's a really brilliant guitar player, QMS could really jam... Jerry plays pedal steel along with Bobby on vocals on some of these recordings... so they are worth downloading for that alone.

Yo midwest folks, any of you in for Railroad Earth in Chicago or Madison this weekend? I'm trying to make at least one work. Should be worth the 6 hour megabus ride...
I finally got around to listening to Railroad Earth. They're damn good.

Hey Robo, my friends and I are doing Railroad Earth on Halloween in Royal Oak, Michigan. We're going as the Grateful Dead circa the mid-80's. We figure most people there will get it (our Jerry, Phil, and Brent are pretty obvious. I ended up having to be Bob due to my general knack for Bob impressions and potential for wearing cut-off jean shorts with a tight purple polo).

That sounds awesome man, Railroad Earth on Halloween would be something. Wish I was going, have fun.
I imagine you'll be pretty easy to recognize as 1980's bob.

probably cheap enough that it will be well worth it.
In Madison, tickets are $25 and includes Great American Taxi opening along with an after party show by the Macpodz for free. railroad earth seem to like good deals.

Yea, probably. I think tickets are only like 20 bucks, and there's a pretty good opening band. Halloween show is bound to be a damn good time too. It's a sweet deal for us from Ann Arbor because the opening band is organizing a party bus that leaves from downtown and for $40 you get a show ticket, ride there and back, and BEER on the bus!

That's solid, doesn't GAT have one of the dudes from Leftover Salmon? Also, the Macpodz are a fun jazz/funk/rock type band that can bring some energy. Definitely worth seeing, especially for "free"

That party bus thing is awesome. Great American Taxi has Vince Herman, the main singer/songwriter/guitarist from Leftover Salmon. I don't listen to Great American Taxi or Leftover Salmon but looking forward to checking them out.
The Macpodz are sweet, I caught them twice at Mountain Jam, real cool stuff. I think they're from Ann Arbor, aren't they?

That sounds like a real fun time with transportation provided and everything. Railroad Earth would be great on Halloween.

Aw c'mon now, I'm a huge Bisco fan and I'm nothing like that or any other Bisco kid stereotypes. Problem is Bisco fans automatically get a bad wrap just because there's some really crazy and/or stupid *** tDB fans. Those fans only make up like 50% of the fanbase, others are normal cleanfun-lovin folks who just like to dance and get down:smoke:

How was their 10/28 show!?!
I've never been to a concert of theirs before, but am stoked to go to their 11/18 one in San Diego. They are playing at 4th & B. It seems like this is a different type of venue than they normally play though, has anyone been or is going?

so railroad earth just put on quite possibly the single greatest show I have ever been to, and I've probably been to 100-150 including some real good ones... but man I have just never experienced anything like last night before. What can I say besides you guys are in for a hell of a treat.

^Do it! Touring with a band you love is one of the most exciting and fun things for a live music enthusiast to do. Great times are had on tour, especially if you're travelling with a select few close pals.

Yeah seems like it would be a blast. My friend and I agreed that next time Railroad Earth comes through the Midwest we'll have to hit a couple more shows.
tlg just announced a winter tour through the midwest so i'll probably be doing minneapolis, madison and maybe chicago. should be fun, although doing a tour through the north midwest in january is pretty ****ing stupid. it'll be freezing.
I'm going to see an Umphrey's Stew Art show at 9:30 on the 21st. I don't know if you guys have heard anything about these things yet, but it's a small show (I think they only sold like 50 or 100 tickets) and the audience texts themes that are projected on a screen and the band tries their best to play to them.
I'm pretty excited to see how this turns out.
Also Blues Traveler tomorrow, first time seeing them.

Umphrey's seems to a lot of really cool things like that. i know they provide free tickets for tapers which i think is an absolutely brilliant idea and something all bands should do. that you're seeing them do sounds pretty crazy and interesting, let me know how it works out.
Blues Traveler was great. They played a some great covers (Devil Went Down to Georgia, What I Got by Sublime, and What You to Want Me). Popper was taking shots on stage all night, and by the end of the show he was obviously trashed, but it seemed to only make him play better. The crowd was surprisingly old, I'm pretty sure I was the youngest person there.

Just uploaded a couple must-hear shows on my blog- http://chinacatsunflower.tumblr.com/
Uploaded 2 David Nelson Band soundboards from this past summer tour. David Nelson is from New Riders Of The Purple Sage and his band is incredible and pretty different from NRPS. Lots of very psychedelic jamming, but there's some country rock/roots stuff too. All five members played with Phil Lesh & Friends at some point and the band just plain rocks, especially Barry Sless. Check out his playing, it's incredible.

furthur tour announced.
it'll be hard for me to make it any of the shows, i might have to wait until festival season (I would expect them to play the last night of Vibes, as it will be Jerry's birthday and all)...
Had the Umphrey's S2 show on Saturday. It was a really cool experience being in such an intimate environment with the band. I thought for the most part the guys did a great job playing along to the themes, and a few of them resulted in some truly great jams. My brother and I both got texts put up (mine was the very last one), which was cool.
You can see all the themes that were used here: http://blog.umphreys.com/cs/blogs/thefloor/
Some of the better ones were "slayer plays techno," "sesame shakedown street," and "Johnny Cash vs. Jerry Garcia."

Damn, I would like to hear how that sounded.
Lunch, I know you have Widespread tickets for tomorrow, might want to check this out: http://www.jambands.com/news/2009/11/23/free-acoustic-widespread-gig
Hopefully you see this in time! I'm thinking about heading to both if I can get out of work early enough.
