No, check out their Millenium show 12-31-99 on archive though. The play for like six hours, lots of insane jams. I've never seen them, which is part of the reason I want to catch Langerado so much.
I'm seeing Umphrey's tomorrow (they're doing a free acoustic show at the local Borders, then their standard show at the Michigan Theater across the street), then DSO on December 29th I think.

no, they are metal..
Doctor D.
12-17-2007, 06:38 PM
Well, I'd say they're more of a jam band now then they've ever been. They're not really metal, it's more alt. metal, if anything. And for almost the last decade, they've extend their songs with improvisational jamming. I'd consider them sort of a jam band.
Oh, and heres Disco Biscuits Uncivilized Area

I've been listening to The Greyboy Allstars a lot lately. Their music is wonderfully playful at times, and smooth and mysterious at times. If you don't know of them they have music on many motion picture soundtracks including "Zero Effect" and "Get Shorty" -- also Elgin Park (one of the members) did scores to such cult favorite films as "Me and You and Everyone We Know" and "Donnie Darko". They are on tour right now. Go here for more info: http://www.greyboyallstars.com/tour.php

Bonnaroo has some great acts as always, but this year there are so many big-name bands that ticket prices will just be outrageous. I'm gonna stick to festivals like Allgood, 10K, etc this summer.
DSO is dank, always a great show.
Also, the 6-10-73 show is good, especially the third set with the Allmans sitting in. Otherwise, I found it to be pretty standard without much that really stood out. Solid through and through but it doesn't compare to the mastery of the fall shows later that year.

Hey, check out my one man jam band! www.myspace.com/fowlmusic
Pretty unique and interesting stuff! Here's a review
FOWL - InaStorMental: This being our first listen to Noah's weird works, we weren't quite sure what we were getting ourselves into, especially when that high-horn synth/bass/drum thang kicked in at about 2:00 on "MoFo Heat - Part 1 - Warming Up"... lotza "buzz", some fair amount o' "fuzz" (guitar) & lots of strange electronic energies being captured to entertain your braincase. You will NOT find music like this in other review 'zines, as they're unwilling to exceed their own expectations (or limitations, however you see it)... of course, that's never true at this magazine... in fact, we WANT the odd, the improvised, & the totally tanked. By the time you get to the screwy spoken-word lines on track 3, "MoFo Heat - Part 3 - Take a Cold Shower", you'll either go take one (a shower, that is), lock yourself in the loony bin, or rush right out & volunteer for the Noah Campbell "Peace World Tour"... terrorists would find this incomprehensible, so we should pipe it into Guantanamo 666 hours a day... ha! ha! Seriously (are you KIDDING, Metcalf?), if you want to hear something totally different, this is your ticket to the show! "Serious" fans of jazz will be shocked, but that's better than NOT hearing this fantastic voyage into the ghost of Uncle Frank Zappa... I give this a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for fans of the insane. Yea, Cow Palace is great. Really outstanding sound quality. The Playin' in the Band at the end of the first set is one of the best post-hiatus versions I've heard. 22+ minutes, they really explore some great territory. 76 is an underrated year. So many interesting set lists and creative jams. Also, they continue to explore some spacey territory, certainly not like the years before the hiatus but a lot more than 77, when they tightened everything up. Check out the beginning of the Cow Palace set II: Sugar Mags>Eyes>Wharf Rat>Good Lovin'>Samson>Scarlet. Unreal sequence with delicious transitions and performances at every stop. Then of course the Help>Slip without Franklin's and a Dew to cap everything off, excellent. Triple encore as well.

Yea, I've heard those. All the June shows I'm familiar with are really solid - the Beacon Run, Boston, Chicago, etc. 6-14 and 6-29 are especially tasty. 6-14 has a great first set (Cold Rain opener is always solid, Big River and LL>Supplication smoke, plus the ~20 minute PitB goes deep before touching down) and the Music>Crazy Fingers>Dancin>Cosmic Charlie in set II is delicious and uniquely 76.
The July run at the Orpheum is really good as well. 7-18 caps everything off and that second set is a marathon. The Let it Grow>Drums>LiG is top shelf, but they just keep it going with Wharf Rat and then the ridiculous Other One sandwich. The Stella at the end is also one of my favorites.

Yeah man I love bluegrass. Keller Williams, Yonder Mountain, Blueground Undergrass, David Grisman, all sick bands. HBR sounds like fun. Haha. I'll have to check that album out, what is the name of it? Is it similar to what he does with Phil Lesh?
robo2448
04-10-2008, 12:59 PM
It's called Giving Up The Ghost. Jackie Greene was never a deadhead before joining Phil and the album isn't "jammy" like Phil and Friends but it's a terrific roots rock album in the same vein as American Beauty or The Band's early material. He's such a good songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. The album is remarkably consistent, which to be brutally honest, is somewhat of a rarity in the jamband world.
Also, you should check out the Sans Souci Quartet, who are opening Hot Buttered Rum tonight. They're another sweet bluegrass band. I have a radio show here at college, and they've agreed to drop by and play an hour set on my show in a couple weeks. Should be a lot of fun.

I've seen Trucks twice, once with Clapton and once with the Allmans. It'll be sweet to see him with his own band though. Everyone sees Derek Trucks as this fantastic guitarist, which of course he is, but they overlook the terrific music that he makes with his band. The Derek Trucks Band is much more than just a Derek Trucks guitar solo, since all of the members are really talented. I can't wait to see him with the Allmans again over the summer and if he ever toured with Clapton again, I'd be there in a second despite the outrageous prices, but I'm looking forward to seeing The Derek Trucks Band instead of seeing Derek Trucks as a sideman. As for Santana, yeah he's kind of gone astray the last few years, but their material from the sixties cooked, and when they play that material live now, it still cooks. And fortunately, he still plays a lot of that material live. There will be some less enjoyable newer songs, but when he goes off on some crazy jam during Soul Sacrifice, Jingo, Black Magic Woman or some other old song, I'm pretty sure I'll be enjoying it. And looking at the setlists, Trucks and Carlos have been doing a couple jams together each show, which is what I'm the most excited about. I can't wait for the show.
Umphreyshead, I can hook you up with Giving Up The Ghost if you want. And when are you seeing DSO? I've never seen them but heard they're really sweet.

Yeah, that'd be great man, I don't know if you have AIM or something, but mine is jew with a crew so just message me and that'd be awesome.
I just saw DSO last night it was really really good. I don't know how they do it, but their guitarist sounds exactly like Jerry. Both singing and guitar playing wise.
The set list was really good too, they started out with Feel Like A Stranger, and they busted out The Weight (Pulled into Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead) by The Band and I flipped out. It was incredible. The drums > space segment was decent, but it dragged on way to long. They made up for it by jamming straight into The Other One. The setlist from what I remember (I was on a few hallucinogens and really really high :D) included Feel Like A Stranger, Foolish Heart, He's Gone, Brown-Eyed Women, Queen Jane Approximately (sick Dylan cover), Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, The Weight, Drums > Space > The Other One. Totally awesome.

Anybody else heard Trey Anastasio's solo albums. I just got The Horseshoe Curve and I was pleasantly surprised, very jazzy and funky. I was expecting it to sound Phish-esque, but I was really happy with how it turned out. Shine is really good too, Tuesday, Come As Melody and Spin are some of my favorite songs.

I read about a band called Swampdawamp on IndieMusicStop.com. I trust their opinions, and the band seems to be a southern rock/ jam type. Has anyone heard of them? The review said the album is a "must have"

Haven't heard any Trey solo stuff either, but I just his s/t from a friend so I'll give that a listen.
The Derek Trucks/Santana concert was pretty nuts. Santana played a lot of new crappy songs but Trucks was amazing and when they both jammed together on Key to the Highway in Trucks set, it was amazing. Trucks also came out for a couple songs with Carlos during Santana's set. Would've liked a little less Santana and a little more Derek Trucks (Santana played for 2.5 hours easily, and Trucks set was probably a little under an hour). And I would've liked a little less new Santana and a few more old songs (Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va were on the setlist but didn't get played) instead of the new stuff. But all in all it was a good show.

Phil & Friends was so kickass last night. They opened with Brown-Eyed Woman, then went into Moma Tried, and they played a really sick Aligator. Then they went into High Time, and the Casey Jones was really good too. That was the first set.
They opened the second with Feel Like A Stranger, and Sittin' On Top Of The World. There was also like a 20 min Playin' In The Band > 25 min Dark Star that rocked. From there They went into The Golden Road > Uncle John's Band. THey ended the set with Sugar Magnolia (with Sunshine Daydream) and the encore was Dire Wolf.
It was really good, great energy throughout the show. There were a few songs that I wasn't sure about what they were, but they were good all the same. Larry Campbell busted out the Violin for SOTOTW and another song. Jackie Greene was real sick, same with John Molo and the keyboardist. Phil rocked the **** though, his vocals during Dark Star were insane.
Highlight: Aligator, Playin > Dark Star.

Yeah I wish I lived in Colorado. Out in New York, we have a great scene in terms of bands playing here, but jambands don't form and grow in New York like they do in Colorado. The obvious suggestions would be:
Bluegrass - Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, David Grisman.
Progressive - Umphrey's McGee, moe., Phish (to a degree).
Electronica - Lotus, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The Disco Biscuits.
Badass - Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Phil Lesh And Friends, Gov't Mule, EOTO, Zilla.
Just go to www.archive.org and search any of the naems and you should be able to find some shows, except for Phish in which case go to www.phishows.com

Yeah hopefully it'll be on iclips. It was streamed live on iclips over the weekend (although I heard the quality was a little iffy)
I just found Levon Helm's set which I'm really excited to hear again since it might've been the highlight of the whole festival. That guy sure knows how to put on a show. I already managed to snag up most of the other sets from the weekend including Umphrey's and Grace Potter who both rocked but unfortunately we were on our way during Grace's set and setting up tents during Umphrey's. Also missed Ratdog's set which was pretty mediocre. They opened the show with Help On The Way and Bobby forgot the first line... it's time he moved onto to something new since Ratdog is kind of boring and just not very good imo. I guess we didn't miss much by leaving after Levon's set.
And the Grateful Dead and Phish are usually mentioned as the best starting point for jambands. To be honest, I liked both bands when I first started listening to jambands but the band that really drew me in was Tea Leaf Green. They were the first non classic rock band that I fell in love with. I became a deadhead only after I had already become obsessed with Tea Leaf Green. As for Phish, I like them a lot, but can't count them as one of my absolute favorites since they are lacking a bit in the songwriting department. Having said that, I'm listening to Mike's Song right now and I'm very excited for the Phish reunion that looks very possible right now since I missed out on them while they were still together.

I haven't ever really been the biggest fan of Ratdog, to me PL and Friends >>>>>>> Ratdog by far. That's cool that they played Help though. Really The Dead's American Beauty is what drew me into Jam Bands, listening to that album for the first time was absolutely magical.

I agree. Ratdog kind of sucks. Same slow, repetitive grooves over and over again and Bobby insists on singing Jerry songs which he's no good at singing anyways. From what I've heard, it's pretty boring. Phil on the other hand, is still breaking through barriers and sounding fresh. I have a ton of respect for Phil's post Dead projects. Can't wait to see him and Levon in July.

Yeah, Phil Lesh is absolutely amazing. The only time I really liked Weir's voice was from Anthem > From the Mars Hotel. I really don't like in the early days, and it's gone to **** for the most part now. He sounds really good on American Beauty, but I guess they all pretty much made vocals one of the biggest if not the biggest priority on that album. I saw Anthem To Beauty and Jerry was like "we tried to not get so hung up on the instrumentals and focused more on the vocals", it payed off for the time being.

I don't think Bobby's voice has necessarily gone bad, but he doesn't use it as well now. He sings too many Jerry songs with Ratdog, and his voice just doesn't work at all for a lot of those songs.
I'm hopefully going to Gathering of the Vibes about 45 minutes away from me in July. Phil & Friends, The Black Crowes, Derek Trucks & The Soul Stew Revival, Taj Mahal, Jackie Greene... it should be a pretty good time.

Aw man, I'm jealous of your friends. I have that 6/13 show on my computer and it is epic! Help On The Way > Slipnot! > Wharf Rat > Eyes Of The World > China Cat Sunflower > The Eleven > I Know You Rider Mason's Children > Franklin's Tower is just about the nastiest second set I've ever heard from Phil. Download it if you don't have it.
I was at the 6/22 show in New Hampshire which maybe isn't quite as good as 6/13 but it was still amazing. The venue really sucked. New Hampshire is pretty conservative (I don't want to be offensive, but redneck is probably a better word to describe people up there) and they didn't take the invasion of thousands of pot-smoking hippies very well. Cops and security guards everywhere. The ****ing county sheriff was there. But Phil made up for it by playing Shakedown Street and Truckin' which both seemed very appropriate for the place. The Shakedown was honestly the best I've ever heard. 1979-01-15 is good, but you need to download this show to hear the Shakedown. Jackie did a great job on the vocals and it went into this crazy psychedelic jam that eventually segued into Jack Straw which really surprised me.

Dancin' sucked but everything else was tight. The Viola Lee Blues > Dark Star was a crazy trip. I heard definite teases of Cumberland Blues and China Cat Sunflower in that jam, and possibly The Wheel as well.

Yea, I've downloaded the 6/13 show, haven't listened yet though. The show you saw looks great. Aside from the obvious heavy-hitters, you got a Big River, which is like one of my favorite songs ever for some reason. I'm really hoping for a Viola Lee or Shakedown (both?) at ALLGOOD.
Also, 1/15/79 is by no means the end-all-be-all of Shakedowns. It's a solid one (what draws me to this particular version is the segue from Miracle, wow!). 6/30/85 is the real killer, absolutely packed with energy and a killer jam that keeps building, culminating in a nice peak before they return to earth. The rest of this show ain't so bad either (June 85 was hot hot hot; check out 6/27 at SPAC too).

On the night I was born, 9/22/88, the Grateful Dead were a few blocks down in Manhatten playing at the Garden and they opened the show with a pretty nice Shakedown. Maybe I mostly like it cause it was on my birthday though.
And yeah, Big River was tight. Larry Campbell sang lead and his wife did a really good job on the back up vocals.

I haven't heard this show in awhile, but I remember it being pretty good, not an all-time great. China>Rider opener is hard to go wrong with, but there are plenty of other 69 shows that top this one (the spring Fillmore West shows, obviously, along with the April shows at the Ark and Avalon). Also, this new format of Grateful Dead, with their long psychedelic journeys coupled with the shorter, more song-oriented material of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, really found it's home by May 70, at least for me. 5/2/70 is notorious and immortalized as DP 8, and for good reason, but the surrounding shows are also worth a listen, notably 5/15.

Yea, listening to a birthday show is fun. They played on my bday, 7/31/88, as well. Also, although this is mostly unrelated, check out the 9/18/87 show at MSG. Although short overall, this show smokes and contains probably the best Morning Dew I've ever heard. Hell in a Bucket gets things going, Sugaree is nice, Candyman is excellent, and the Bird Song really delivers to end the first set. Second opens with a Shakedown, speaking of that, although this one is kinda flat and doesn't really go anywhere. By Terrapin though, the band is on again. GDTRFB out of Space is really fun, Jerry shreds on Watchtower, and then the Dew really must be heard to be believed. Then Bobby follows with a great Good Lovin' which they jam in La Bamba, complete with Jerry vocals, triggering ecstatic crowd reaction.
Lunch, have you ever read the Illustrated Trip? It's a really awesome book that you should check out if you haven't. Pricey though.
No, in fact I've only seen it around once or twice. Looked really cool though. I actually just finished Blair Jackson's excellent Jerry biography (titled Garcia: An American Life), which I would highly recommend.

Lunch, have you ever read the Illustrated Trip? It's a really awesome book that you should check out if you haven't. Pricey though.
Cool, 9/22/87 O'er here. 9/22 shows are usually the best.

I should pick up that Garcia biography. I also really want to read Living With The Dead by Rock Scully since Rock must have a pretty interesting take on everything...
I just watched that Morning Dew on youtube and Jerry gets really into it. Wow. I'll still take the Cornell version over it, but that was amazing. I also saw that Ratdog played Morning Dew for the first time ever the other day. Probably wasn't that good though.
I don't have the NYE '69 show but the shows from The Ark in April of '69 that Lunch mentioned are definitely worth checking out. He Was A Friend Of Mine opener one night on that run (forget which one).
Doctor D, any other 9/22 shows I need to check out? It is in fact a pretty sweet birthday.

9/22/91 Boston Garden, from what I hear, is a good one. Shakedown opener is always a good sign, plus this run is considered by many one of their last epic runs. I've heard the shows from a few nights later and they definitely qualify as epic.
Robo, the youtube clip is very cool, although it suffers from weak audio quality like youtube clips tend to. Still, during the final solo, Jerry gives that awesome, "Yea, I got this" look, he's so in the zone and delivers that final burst with ferocity.

Hmm... I might have to make that my first '90s Dead show. I haven't ventured past '88 yet.
Jerry also gets very into the vocals on that Morning Dew. The guitar is brilliant of course, but his singing sounds soulful.

There are plenty of 89/90 shows that I would recommend before that 91 show. I really think that Fall 89>Spring 90 was a peak for the band. Brent especially was at the top of his game and the boys sounded comfortable and tight for just about every show. Check out the Alpine 89 run (7/17-19), 10/9/89 (Dark Star breakout anyone? Crowd goes nuts), 10/26/89 (most intense Dark Star since the golden era), 3/29/90 (Branford Marsalis sits in on Birdsong and then the entire second set; LEGENDARY Eyes, great Estimated, Dark Star...). Summer 91 is really hot too - 6/16, 6/17 are two great examples. Or check out 9/10/91 MSG, with Branford again, this time for the whole show.

Those shows all sound pretty good. I've heard a bunch of stories about the Alpine Valley shows and definitely get to them eventually. Then probably the Branford shows right after that. What I love about The Illustrated Trip is that it makes notes on every single show they did and even gives some of them stars so someday my goal is to have all the shows with stars downloaded and give them a listen. That's a pretty tough task though. They're quite a few of them.

I just saw Blues Traveler over the 4th at Red Rocks and they put on one hell of a show. I finally walked into the venue at around 8:15 or so when they had started playing and they did one set that ended around 11 (with encore) and it was an incredible show. They pretty played non-stop the entire time, I counted about 5 breaks during the entire show and each were maybe a minute.
If anyone gets a chance to see them on their new tour with Live and Collective Soul (hence me going in at 8:15 when it started at 5) you should definitely check them out. It was a really good performance and very high energy. The singer busted out a full sized spartan sword for the encore, need I say more?

The Rothbury show was ****ing hot! I watched the webcast last night. Every song was awesome. Except Dancin' In The Streets. Their version of that with Theresa on vocals kinda blows. They played it as an encore when I saw them too and I wouldn't mind never hearing it again. Everything else was so good though. Warren sat in for Here Comes The Sunshine through Mexican Girl and added a lot without dominating and drowning everyone else out, which I feel like sometimes happens when he plays with Phil. Dire Wolf was cool with Larry on pedal steel and Jackie always kills Sugaree. 2nd set was just perfect. Listen to it.

Yeah I was watching the webcast too. Warren was really good on the first few songs, especially Althea. I agree about Theresa, I really didn't like her voice and she looked rather out of place.
In Phish new, I guess Mike joined Trey during his acoustic set for two NEW songs, and Mike, Trey and John all played a Beatles cover during Mike's set.

I talked to a few of my friends who went to Rothbury. Actually, I got texts from the two of them at like five in the morning about the STS9 show they just saw. Everything else was awesome too though, I heard. On a similar note, I'm leaving for Allgood tomorrow. I can't ****ing wait to see Phil. As the festival has gotten closer I've realized that I'm definitely most excited for that show (he plays on Friday night, too). This is great because I know Phil won't disappoint and I'm sort of forgetting about all the other great shows to see - PGroove Thursday night, Mule late night after Phil, Widespread, DSO, RRE, MSMW, TLG, HBR, Keller, Derek Trucks, SOJA, etc. I'll also be Schyma-ing my way around on like every drug that comes my way.
NP: Disco Biscuits set from Langerado. Check this out if you haven't heard it, there's a pretty good source on Archive. Murph from STS9 sits in a few songs. Hot show overall though, especially listen if you doubt the Disco Biscuits.

I might check out that show, since I do kinda doubt the disco biscuits. I have a couple shows on my computer but i've never listened to them. Might get around to them sometime.
I'm listening to Michael Franti and Spearhead right now from Mountain Jam. So good. Everyone should see Michael Franti at least once. I don't care for all of his music, but seeing him live is almost like a religious experience. Mike, is he at All Good? Don't miss him if he is. And expect some sit ins too. Warren, Jackie Greene, and some saxaphone player. Also, we invited a deaf girl up to the stage to dance and perform "Everyone Deserves Music" using sign language. Man, maybe I'm just really ****ing baked but he seems so incredible right now. Such feel good music.

I think All Good has the best lineup of all the summer festivals. Yeah I just doublechecked the lineup and it's definitely the one I would want to see the most. It's a shame some of the bands overlap, but man, that lineup is just amazing.
I'm seeing Tea Leaf Green and Dark Star Orchestra tonight. Personally, I think it's kind of messed up that Tea Leaf Green is opening for a cover band, even if DSO is an amazing cover band. But it should still be an awesome time.

Yo Lunch, give us some All Good reviews!
The Tea Leaf Green/DSO show was pretty crazy. Tea Leaf Green just kills it every time I see them and this time was no different. This was the first time I saw them play outside during the day though, which was very cool. Also cool to be standing in the front row. We were a little late and missed the first couple songs but their set was very solid. A good time as always.
DSO was everything I hoped it would be. They played May 1, 1977 and it's hard to get a better show than May of '77. I suppose the May 1st show gets overshadowed in Dead history by the shows that occurred over the next week, but the setlist was still amazing. Very unique too. No Scarlet > Fire, Jack Straw, Sugar Magnolia, Sugaree, Not Fade Away, St. Stephen, Deal, Morning Dew, or Row Jimmy which are all pretty strongly associated with that era. Instead, we got this-
Set 1:
Might As Well
El Paso
Ramble On Rose
Cassidy
They Love Each Other
Lazy Lightning >
Supplication Blues
It Must Have Been The Roses
Estimated Prophet
Tennessee Jed
Sunrise
Samson & Delilah
Set 2:
Dancin' In The Streets >
Brown Eyed Women
Playin' In The Band >
Drums >
The Other One >
Comes A Time >
Playin' Reprise
Encore:
Brokedown Palace
The Music Never Stopped (not part of original show)
The performance was just awesome. I gained a new appreciation for songs I didn't listen to all that much before like Lazy > Supplication and especially Comes A Time. The Comes A Time was just bone chilling. DSO definitely gets my approval. I passed on seeing them a lot before but was very impressed with them at Mountain Jam and knew I couldn't miss this. And I'll definitely do my best to see them whenever they're in the area.

Never pass on a DSO show, man. They are too good. In fact, based on the one time I've seen TLG, I'd much rather see DSO. Comparing an original band to a "cover" band is like apples and oranges, I know, but I have a blast every time I see DSO. TLG was good, but it was ultimately sort of "meh" and the set never really went anywhere. I actually missed them at Allgood (though not because I didn't think they would put on a good show, their scheduled slot just didn't really work out for me). DSO at Allgood, however...well, keep reading.
Allgood was absolutely insane, in every way. Complete mind-numbing madness in every direction for three straight days. In fact, I'm still attempting to recover my thoughts about what actually happened. Anyway, I'll try to review some shows in chronological order.
Thursday: We missed Jazzam, who I've heard are a pretty good time. It took us awhile to get in though, and we had just finished setting up camp by the time they went on, so we elected to relax and soak up the festival vibe instead of heading to the stage immediately. From our campsite we had pretty good sound of the Ropeadope stage though (the stage for all the Thursday shows as well as random other jams throughout the weekend), so I guess we didn't miss the whole thing. We of course went to check out PGroove though, and they played a monster set. Much more focused on their trance/jam material rather than their song material, which worked perfectly for that evening. We had high hopes for the Join's late night set, but they started late and had sound problems in the early going so we decided to leave. By the time we got back to the campsite though, it sounded like they got it together and played a good show.
Friday: One of my only regrets about the weekend was not seeing as many afternoon shows as I should have, so I missed most of the early sets (notably: RAQ, the Wood Brothers, and the Avett Brothers). I spent the day drinking and consuming various other substances and mingling around the camp grounds, and I definitely had a great time. Obviously we headed to the main stage for the Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood show. Right around here the acid started kicking in and they took me for a hell of a ride. Scofield and Medeski were dominating me all over the place, and the sun was setting behind the stage for their time slot. Hool-a-hoop girls, dancing aliens, the emergence of glowstick people, and overall supreme musicianship are what I remember this show for.
Lettuce, although drastically changing the mood of the music, threw down and kept everyone grooving between MSMW and Phil. They play fun groove/funk music which was a nice change of pace from the previous chaos. Phil came on late but it was well worth it. They opened with Feel Like a Stranger and it was HOT. At one point during the jam I just kept repeating "Oh my God..." to myself, holding on to the ground for life. Till the Morning Comes wasn't very exciting, but the Loser that followed was heavy, punishing, intense. Jackie Greene is phenomenal and he completely sold me on this rendition. The rest of the first set wasn't too impressive (though they did play Ripple and cool Jam>GDTRFB to close it out). A few of my friends left during the first set (suckers), so my friend and I (both tripping face by this point) decide to move from our perch on the hill down to the crowd in front of the stage, which proved to be an excellent place for the second set. Golden Road opener was awesome, and it went into Viola Lee Blues! ****ing amazing. New Potato Caboose was quite a treat too. The Revolution that followed killed some of the momentum, but not for long. After some space, Phil's bass lights up and he starts into a dominant trance groove. The band follows (all these guys are scary good) and the proceed to shred to pieces the Elevator, the Particle Song. This was the coolest thing I've ever seen at a concert. With Phil and John Molo pounding the trance, Campbell and Greene exchanged ripping solos with each other before they cleared the way for Steve Molitz and his epic synth work. Watching that man work was an experience onto itself (I remember one section where he was tweaking some knob behind his back while playing the boards in front of him). The following Jack Straw and NFA were nice Dead classics, but the damage had already been done.
I had to take a break so I missed most of SOJA, but the ending 10-15 minutes I saw of their set was excellent. Mule came on about 40 minutes late, I think due to guitar problems. Their set was excellent, but I was so tired that I couldn't get as much out of it as I should have. Still, I remember a fantastic No Quarter, and Warren singing Gilmour's part of Comfortably numb solo before taking the band into Soulshine for an encore. Very nice show all around. We walk back in the mist and get sleep for the next day.
Saturday: Continued substance abuse causes me to sacrifice some of the day's earlier shows (Hot Buttered Rum, TLG) in order to ensure I was able to stay awake for the late night DSO set. We head to the main stage around 4 for the Mike Gordon band, who were a great time. Gordo was the first member of Phish I've ever seen, so that was great fun. Plus, his band is pretty solid. During this show I encountered, by complete chance, two of my good friends who I'd been meaning to meet up with the whole time but we couldn't seem to find each other. This probably skews my memory of how good Gordo's set (and the next band, a cool electronica group called Telepath) was, but this afternoon was awesome either way. I stuck around for some of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi before leaving to get food, water, rest, and more drugs for the long night ahead.
We returned a little bit into Keller's set, which was great fun. Their music never goes very deep but you can tell the band is having a good time and the audience was reciprocating. I remember him playing a cool Eyes of the World and Dancin' in the Streets, as well. Like the night before, things were starting to get weird for me by this point, and I was fully ready for my mind to blown by Bassnectar, which it was. He had amazing visualizations accompanying his set, which was mostly chill while still bringing the energy. By this point, the stage area was packed for the upcoming Widespread show, and for good reason.
WSP was probably the best show I've ever seen. They started on time and immediately brought the heat, wasting no time getting the thousands on their feet and moving. The glow stick wars started early as well. Jimmy Herring, in my eyes, is a God. Before this show I'd only ever been a casual fan of him (and Panic), with only some scattered listening experiences. No more. During one jam, he dominated me so badly that I had to sit down after it. As if that weren't enough, Derek Trucks joined the band for two songs relatively early in the set! Complete insanity. We were all expecting set break to come, but they just kept on trucking, playing one long set instead of their standard two set format. It worked perfectly though, because the freight train just kept building momentum the whole time. These guys have unbelievable energy and stamina. From their Drums>"space" the band went into Maggot Brain! (Herring: 74 Me: 0), which eventually segued into a killer Chilly Water, my favorite WSP song (not that I'm very well-versed in their repertoire, but still). Unreal.
The Bridge, a band from nearby Baltimore, had the undesirable task of following the Panic show, but they really came through. These boys were clearly Allgood veterans (confirmed by an announcement from the stage late in their set about this being their Xth Allgood appearance), but on top of that, Gordo came out on stage with them for basically the second half of their set. They really took off and kept everything moving for the whole show. By the time they ended, I was ready for DSO. They came out on time and opened with a great Music Never Stopped, the segued beautifully into Bertha>Good Lovin'. This whole show for me was basically euphoria - singing along, dancing crazily, the shirt eventually came off, glowsticks, rolls, acid, etc. Truly a beautiful experience. They must have known what was happening to me because they even played China Cat, a song I'd never heard live (by any band) and clearly one of my favorites. The following Rider was equally as impressive. I remember an outstanding Scarlet>Fire, Mission in the Rain, and the drums segment was awesome. Plus the ripped through Alligator! Fantastic. They really tore it down, and sent me walking home on clouds.
Sunday I crashed harder than I ever had in my life. My body couldn't take it anymore, as much as my mind wanted one more day of rage. We limped to the stage for some of RRE's set, but I was just so beat that we had to leave. They played a good, enjoyable set, from what I heard, so I was disappointed that I couldn't give them the energy they deserved. Shortly after that we packed up and went home to sleep in our own beds. Needless to say, nothing will ever be the same again.

L.L. Rain>He's Gone is death in the second set for me. It's like after Bobby decided to deflate all the momentum from the show Jerry would respond with his most boring second set song, and the band would normally crawl into drums with their tail between their legs. At least you got a Last Time (fun song) after He's Gone to wake you up, and TOO>Death Don't is awesome. Stranger is such a fun song, and Half Step>The Weight I'm sure was a blast.

Hopefully I'm seeing STS9 and Umphrey's on Thursday. I just have to see if I can get out of work that night. And then I'm going to Gathering Of The Vibes for one day to see Phil, Billy, Mike Gordon, NRPS, Taj Mahal and anyone else that is playing on Saturday.

I ended up going to Mickey Hart tonight (Allgood guy came through). Having never listened to anything by this lineup before I had no idea what to expect. But man, these guys are awesome. Mickey, obviously, was fun to see in person and played a percussion rack instead of a drum set (something I felt he should've done more often with the Dead). George Porter, their bass player, is incredible. His groove lays an unshakable foundation for the rest of the band. Kyle Hollingsworth, the keys guy from String Cheese, was fun to see again. Good keyboardists are always fun to watch because they are look like madmen when they play. Steve Kimock is great too, he has such a beautiful tone. Plus their girl singer is actually really good.
They opened with a fun Iko (which is like the perfect song for this band to play), and played a surprising (to me, at least) New Speedway early in the first set. I think the rest of the first set were recent originals but I'm not sure. Second set opened well but really took off after a great "space" jam that segued in Fire. After another original, they played Scarlet>GDTRFB (this segue was killer), then another song>NFA to close the set. The venue is great, especially the sound, and the crowd was all good people who were fun to talk to. I'm glad I found someone to go to this show with because it wasn't a good one to miss.
Robo, Umphrey's and Sound Tribe are coming to Baltimore next Sunday so I'll definitely be going to them. The kid I saw Mickey with has already made plans to go to this show so I know there will be at least two of us. UM is playing before STS9 which is perfect for me. When I saw UM at Michigan this past fall (I think), it wasn't that good of a show. I enjoyed myself but I couldn't really get into the music. However, I heard from a friend who caught an earlier show on this tour that UM tore it up, so I'm excited to give them another shot. STS9 I know is going to dominate, I've been wanting to see them again since right after I first saw them last October. I heard their Rothbury set was potentially the best of that weekend.

To be honest, I've never really gotten into listening to Umphrey's stuff, but saw them live once and loved it. When I'm listening to them, I hear very talented musicians playing music that sounds a little mechanical and unsoulful. But when I saw them live I was just blown away by how instrumentally talented they are. The jams are just so tight and awesome. Cinninger can really rip too.

The thing I love about Umphrey's is that they're one of the true jam bands left. Bands like moe. are incredible, but it's almost like they have designated parts to jam out at. It sounds incredible, but Umphrey's can play the same song 10 times and each version will be different and really good.

Bingo. This is always how I've felt about them. Live, the musicianship is quite the spectacle, but their musical ADD prevents me from really getting into the zone. It's fun that they can shred but all their jams seem very explicit - like they're consciously deciding to jam rather than implicitly improvising as a single organism. So incredibly talented though, that's why I'm excited to give them another shot.
Side thought: I never really cared about moe. and don't see what is that interesting about them. Like UH said they are too standard in that they have previously determined times to jam. I find them to be really one dimensional too, which doesn't help considering I'm not a very big fan of their dimension. They also border on sounding too much like O.A.R. high school girl "jam".
STS9 is also pretty one-dimensional, but their sound is very unique and personally I love it. A lot of their shows/sets are pretty much the same though (or even if the setlists differ, their songs are basically similar). I like that they created their own definitive niche in the electronica/jam genre, which I feel like has been struggling to continue being innovative after the initial shock of bands like Particle and earlier Disco Biscuits stuff. Though I love Particle and have started digging the Biscuits more as well, so in general I'm very happy with this facet of the jam scene. STS9 just released a new album too and I've heard good things about the new material.
Robo, do you torrent? If you do hop over bt.etree.org and pick up some of the Allgood sets. The Particle jam from Phil's show is a must hear, although this will probably make its way to the archive if it hasn't already. Panic shows aren't at archive though and their set is just unreal. I've been listening to it almost nonstop for this past week. Maggot Brain>Chilly Water is one of the best live performances I've ever heard.
Edit: Haha, it's kinda funny that the Other Music listening party is STS9 right now. Their studio stuff is pretty good from what I've heard (only their album Artifact).

I do torrent. I'm very grateful that I do. It's a real pain in the *** downloading torrents, converting files to mp3 and renaming everything, but it's worth it for all the great stuff you can find.

Yea, I feel that. I did that when I first started torrenting but then I started finding so much that I couldn't keep up. Now I usually just use Winamp to play the flac files directly and don't worry about re-tagging everything. I keep them on my external too, so I don't use all my hard drive space instantly.

I'm watching it right now and the black crowes are killing it. It seems like the black crowes kind of split a jamband fans- some really like them, others don't. I really dig them though, Luther Dickinson sounds so good with them.
I'm hopefully gonna be at vibes tomorrow to see Phil, Billy, New Riders, Taj Mahal and a few others. Just hope tickets are still avaliable. Should be a good time.

02-26-77 Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, Ca. (Sat)
1: Terrapin, Minglewood, TLEO, Estimated, Sugaree, Mama Tried, Deal, Playin> Wheel> Playin
2: Samson, Tennessee Jed, Music, Help> Slipknot> Franklin's, Promised, Eyes> Dancin> Around
E: U. S. Blues
first "Estimated" - first "Terrapin"
So, this show is pretty famous, even in the rich year of 1977. However, after downloading it awhile ago, I'd only listened to snippets and didn't think much of them at the time. I turned it on today though, starting with the opening notes, and damn is this set killer. I only listened to set one, actually, but that in itself warranted this post. First, we have the obvious heavy-hitters: Terrapin opener (probably the only one ever), and masterfully done considering it's the debut performance. I love Minglewood, when the boys are on this song smokes like it does here. Solid TLEO, not a favorite of mine but it doesn't kill the momentum. Estimated, the other first-time song in this show, is a confident burst of energy, if a little undeveloped. Still, they pull of Terrapin and Estimated, two relatively difficult tunes, with really no mistake. Sugaree has three nice instrumental breaks, not quite reaching the peaks it would by May but certainly a good sign of things to come. Mama Tried is fun fun fun (seriously, how can you not sing along with Jerry and Bob during the chorus?). Deal = don't care, a good tune but these early versions don't really do it for me compared to the later jammed-out first set enders. But Playin>Wheel>Playin is dynamite. Seriously good jamming in the Playin' with a surprisingly effective transition in, and out, of the Wheel. Can't wait to turn on this second set later.

That show sounds awesome. But where can I download it? Can't find it on etree and speeding arrow is sadly no more.
So Gathering Of The Vibes. I really wish I could've gone for the full festival, camping out and all that fun stuff but I couldn't take the days off from work. So I went up Saturday morning for the day. It rained hard for most of the drive there but then stopped. As soon as we bought tickets and got in, it started to pour like crazy. And just wouldn't let up. The music was postponed for around 4 hours. We were hiding from the rain under the cover of a friendly vendor's tent when we heard the rain stop and Jerry's voice singing Here Comes Sunshine over the loudspeaker. Soon Wavy Gravy got on the stage, started cheering everyone up and introduced New Riders Of The Purple Sage.
I think the original New Riders are mostly dead but this lineup managed to put on a pretty good show. David Nelson and Buddy Cage are still alive and kickin' and that was enough for me. They opened with Henry, and then invited Donna out for I Don't Know. Donna didn't really contribute anything, but I Don't Know You was sweet with Cage's pedal steel. Donna was on and off the stage for the rest of the set. The lead guitarist from her band also came out and made the music jump to another level, trading solos with Nelson and Cage. Other highlights included Panama Red, Deep Elem Blues and a surprisingly psychedelic Garden Of Eden which really showcased Buddy Cage's pedal steel. They also had two roadies painting on the side of the stage throughout the set. The painting was very cool and evolving along with the music. I was surprised and very impressed with their set and would love to see them again.
Billy played next and put on a great show without saying a single word to the crowd the whole time. He really looks a lot like Bill Murray these days. He still owns on drums though. Oteil is a ridiculous bassist too. I saw The Allmans once but was in the last row of the building and couldn't hear Oteil. Oteil was loud and clear this time and I was really blown away by him. Scott Murawski was great too, the thing about the power trio is that they're so focused and locked in on each other that they can move the music different places very easily. They opened with Eyes Of The World and finished with Help On The Way > Slipnot and then Bertha which was on fire. Cool show.
Mike Gordon was next and I didn't recognize a single song he played but still enjoyed. Some great jamming. Billy sat in for a couple songs. Not too much to say about the set. It was phishy, terrible singing, lyrics that I didn't really pay attention to, and great jamming. Scott Murawski was also in Mike's band and showed off a little more during this set.
Taj Mahal was the last show before Phil and really got the crowd going with some rocking blues. Again, didn't recognize any songs, but the man can play the blues and created a huge sound for a trio. I also found it very interesting that he strayed away from traditional blues rock a bit, with some songs sounding a little reggae-ish. Towards the end of his set, security people went through the crowd warning everyone that a storm was coming and it was supposed to worse than the rain earlier. They said everyone should go tie their tents down and try to find some shelter. We decided to get a good spot for Phil instead. It started to drizzle, but then Phil came on.
He opened with Here Comes Sunshine and just like that, the rain was gone. The storm passed over us and never hit. It was one of those wacky weather coincidences that seems to happen so often with the Dead. As Phil, Jackie, Larry, and Theresa sang the chorus, they seemed to be willing the storm away and it worked. Magical stuff.

The band was on fire. Phil was smiling all night and playing a very cool, unusual looking bass that sounded great. Larry Campbell tore it up, and Jackie Greene was super energized. Jackie kept walking over to Larry and facing up to him as they traded guitar solos. One time (I think during Cumberland), Jackie just couldn't keep up, bowed to Larry, started pointing at him and clapping which I thought was hilarious. Jackie's stage persona is flashier than anyone else who I've seen play with the Dead and I guess some people don't like that but I love it. It's exciting young blood. His singing was so good. Ah **** it, this is too long. I'll write more later.

Meh. I haven't heard it the whole way through so I can't judge it all, but I will agree with the cliched Phish fan sentiment that the band by 2004 was a shadow of its 95 and 97 self (or the earlier 90's, for that matter). By the final tour they seemed to be running out of ideas and a lot of the intensity was missing.

I love me some Useless Blues, but they did play it way too often and predictably in the encore slot. I like the song in 74 when it was fresh and adventurous. Take the classic 6/28/74 for example (part of DP 12): WRS>Jam (with MLB somewhere in there)>US Blues. Absolutely killer.

Another smoking show. The marathon set list really says it all. The show circulates in a killer AUD tape too, the captures not only the energy of the night but has really good sound as well. Jerry is on fire and taking everyone there with him for the ride.

I actually really liked it, you're right it's not 94, 97, or 98, but I still thought it was a really good show. The set list is also one of my favorites (Divided Sky, Curtain WITH!!!, ASIHTOS, Mike's Groove, Suzy, Maze, Free, Birds, Sample, Moma Dance). And yes, I realize that's the majority of the show. Hahaha.
Everyone praises NYE 95, but I just don't see it. It's high energy (cocaine) and tight, but it's just not that original sounding. It sounds like Phish don't get me wrong, but listen to the night before and then listen to the 31st and you can see the difference.
Lunch
08-06-2008, 06:45 PM
NYE 95 is a good show, I probably enjoy it more than you do, but I agree in context of the entire fall tour it's not necessarily standout. It was probably released more based on the fact that they could market a NYE show more easily than a random show in October-December to the regular audience, not the phans. 10/31/95, the Quadrophenia show, was released as one of the Live Phish series and is a pretty fantastic outing for the band. Still though, Phish shows don't tend to sound very original to me. They certainly have their own unique sound and thing going on, but once you've heard that it becomes kinda standard. Trey especially tends to play the same thing in every song, and almost all of his solos are built around that one note he reaches towards the climax of the jam. I think Fishman, Page, and even Gordo are infinitely more interesting players because of this, but even so the group sound tends to became very standard and it too often sounds like "the" Phish jam rather than "a" Phish jam, if you know what I mean.
UmphreysHead
08-06-2008, 10:55 PM
Meh I think Trey can definitely play similar solos, but I think he can also be very original and different. If you get a chance to hear the night before (1995-12-30) or Live Phish 18 (5-7-98 I think) then you can see a bit more of what I'm talking about.
Another thing I love about Phish is that they're just hilariously funny people. It makes their live shows just that much more fun. I mean who else plays chess with the audience, jumps on trampolines, or does barbershop quartets live?

Oh yea, Phish are definitely incredibly talented and fun to the extreme. Seeing them would be a blast. I just can't understand how people take them so seriously.
Speaking of Phish, has anyone seen/heard anything about the new Walnut Creek DVD? It's a summer 97 show, which probably means good things, and the set list looks nice (Runaway Jim, Stash, Bouncing Round the Room, Mike's Song, Simple, Weekapaug Groove, Harry Hood). If I can get some money together I'll probably check it out. The only Phish DVD I have is It, which is ok but I'd like to see some performances from this era. It spends too much time as a documentary, cutting song performances with interviews (most of which show Trey taking himself waaaaay too seriously) and even the bonus disk with just song performances could be better.
I got Trey Anastasio's solo album recently. Man that guy can funkyjazzyjam it up.

Meh, I mean they like to have fun but they do take their music very seriously. If you read any interview with Trey (Bittersweet Motel has some good ones) he always talks about how music is the number one priority. I doubt they would ever sacrifice a song/show just for a joke. Take a look at them up on stage you can tell they're very very into it and definitely aren't just pissing around on stage. I think that people are confusing their care free attitude and theatrics with how they feel about the music. If anything they use it to get the audience more engaged in the show and give everyone a good time.

Yea, clearly they take their music seriously. Which is a good thing as they're all incredibly talented and can make brilliant things happen when they have it going on. The only problem I have is Trey takes himself too seriously, not in terms of playing guitar but in his concepts lyrically. It's funny/sad/annoying to see how far he goes into his acid rambling lyrics. For me those are a good time, but nothing more. They aren't some deeper meaning of life philosophies. They are about Wilson and the king of lizards. That's all well and good but I think too many people have put him up on a pedestal, and as a response he's become so into his art himself that he seems to have lost perspective about what he's actually doing. It's hard to overstate the importance of playing good time music for thousands of people for years on end, which Phish did, but ultimately for me I can't understand how people take them as seriously as the Dead. For me the two are not comparable. I guess that's what I'm getting at.

Tom Marshall writes the majority of the lyrics I think, or at the least it's the two of them together. I can see what you mean about that, I think they have some incredible lyrics as well as some terrible ones. The majority of them I like, I guess I just like Tom Marshall's style. Reba and Weigh are good examples, really oddly detailed and formed lyrics, but to me they just sound good.
It really just comes down to personal opinion. And for the record, GD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Phish, but that doesn't mean I can't love Phish. :)

The Gov't Mule NYE show has so many covers because the theme of the show was Winter Of Love where they covered songs from the Summer Of Love in 1967. Their covers of When The Music's Over and Morning Dew were great but I thought a lot of the other ones were a little lackluster. At least compared to some of the other amazing covers they do. I didn't go to that show, but I was there 2 nights earlier on 12/29 which was a ripping show. Tea Leaf Green opened and their guitarist and keyboardist joined in for an on fire cover of I'm Waiting For My Man and a tribute to The Who with I Can See For Miles (Intro) > My Generation. Check out that show.
Also, the two shows I saw them do at Mountain Jam were on fire. Special guests up on stage all night long and it was just a real great time. Check out the Dear Prudence with Jake Cinninger from Umphrey's McGee sitting in- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWtGd7StEow.

how was mountain jam man? i havent heard from anybody that went...
Mountain Jam was tight. Best 3 day stretch of my life. It started out bad as my friend got caught with a half ounce of weed and security kind of held him up for awhile before sending him all the way home. ****ers. so we ended up missing all the friday bands except mule and the late night. But Gov't Mule made up for the missed sets with a monster show. Some great sit ins from Brendan Bayliss on Sugaree, Grace Potter and her guitarist on Whole Lotta Love, Jake Cinninger on Dear Prudence, and Ivan Neville along with the Galactic saxaphonist on Spanish Moon. The Dear Prudence was probably the highlight of the night. Amazing. It's on youtube, check it out. Don't Step On The Grass, Sam was awesome too, especially fun for us because of what happened with security early in the day. By the way, security was amazingly loose inside the festival, they only cared about people bringing stuff in, not what people did once they got in. After Mule, we went back to the campsite to regroup and then went to galactic. The first song was a sick jam with Ivan Neville (Neville Brothers, keyboard) and Andy Hess (Mule, bass) sitting in. But then the rest of the set sucked. They had a crappy rapper up there ruining everything. We left after 3-4 songs. Should've gone to Lotus who were also playing late night instead.
Saturday was a pretty swell day too. Sharon Jones, Jackie Greene and Michael Franti really impressed me during the day. Ray LaMontagne was solid too and I really enjoyed the little I saw of Mofro. Mule tore it up again with another great show and then Dark Star Orchestra played the late night. Their set was shorter than I hoped cause Mule did a really long encore complete with fireworks, but they were great. So Many Roads was perfect. Liberty was great to see too.
Sunday the highlight was Levon Helm. What an amazing guy. So much fun to see. MSMW blew my mind too. I've never seen such great jamming. I'll definitely be back at Mountain Jam next year. What a fun time.

Sounds awesome. Bummer about missing Lotus though, a festival late-night slot is the ideal atmosphere for them.

Yeah I wasn't familiar with Lotus' stuff then (i'm still not) but they must've been better than Galactic. I'd heard good things about Galactic but they were pretty lousy at Mountain Jam.
I'm so baked right now listening to Bertha from Dick's Picks 18. I never really listen to Dick's Picks but this seems pretty damn good.

Yea, Lotus is awesome. Although I've gathered from our posting that I probably enjoy their style more than you do. They play sort of that trance/electronica jam, only they have more of an upbeat take on it than say, Particle. And I can't blame you for checking out Galactic, who I've also heard are amazing in concert.
TMNS on DP 18 is dynamite, one of the best versions I've ever heard. I generally like the DPs because the sound quality is really good. Although DP 18 sounds kind of weird, but that's probably got more to do with the sound from the SBDs of this period (early 78) than the mastering for the CDs. Other highlights on that one are the Scarlet>Fire and the Other One, which absolutely smokes.

Man, I just discovered that TMNS. I listened to it like 5 times today. Best Music Never Stopped I've ever heard. The interplay between them is incredible. Bobby's rhythm playing is mindblowing on that and Jerry just goes off. And I love the lyrics to that song. Describes the band so perfectly. Anyways, that's definitely the best Music Never Stopped I've ever heard. 10/9/77 is pretty good though.
Music Never Stopped inspired me to listen to all of DP's 18 now to see if the whole show is that on fire. It's not, but still a great show. Cold Rain And Snow was really cool just cause how many times do you get to hear that?

I always loved how with a song like CR&S (pretty much a perfect example), Jerry would consistently play it a few times a year, after of course the early days when it was played much more frequently. It amazes me that they could keep such a good grip on their ridiculously massive repertoire.

Haha man, I know that show well. The Capitol Theatre (where the show is from) is 5 minutes from my house in the next town ever. I still don't understand why they ever played in Portchester, NY but maybe it used to be much cooler than it is now. That show is honestly one of my favorite shows in terms of performance. I think if it was a soundboard recording people would recognize it as the masterpiece that it is. NRPS played a great opening set that night too, make sure you give that one a listen.
I have every show they ever played at the Capitol and they are all gold. Some are really bad sound quality (notably the November 1970 run) but still worth a listen. 2/18/71 is the most essential though.
It's really sad to see the Capitol being used for Proms and Sweet Sixteen parties now. What a decline.

so what is the best soundboard tape (in terms of quality and performance) you all would say you have? (and would you upload it please?)

That's a really hard question. Cornell pops into my head immediately but I'll have more in a few minutes.

I doubt I could pick just one, 90% of what I have is sbds so it's all sounds really good... But in general 72, 74 (WOS), 77, 80, 83 are almost always quality.

yeah thats a pretty broad question, so im gonna narrow it down. earlier (pre- wake of the flood maybe?) soundboards. ive not got that much and what i do have is mostly tapers in the crowd and sh!t...if anybody takes the time to post somethin up ill return the favor.

Betty Boards (named so because of Betty Cantor-Jackson, operating the sound board) are all phenomenal sounding...I used to have a list of them but I lost it. Included in the list are 5/8/77 and 2/18/71 - that should tell you something about the quality of them.
Edit: Here we go:

I'm uploading 3 shows, 1977-05-25 - The Mosque, 1974-06-18 - Freedom Hall, and 1972-05-26 - The Strand Lyceum, I'll have the link up by tomorrow morning. These are some of my favorite shows, and the sbds are very high quality. The Mosque especially.

Might As Well is a really awesome song that doesn't get nearly enough credit. Just putting it out there. It's a really great opener. DSO opened with it when I saw them and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since.
I've been streaming this show this afternoon- http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-10-29.sbd.kempa.280.sbeok.shnf

Megaupload isn't to hard (I'm using a mac). Just zip the file and then upload it, pretty self explanatory.

Right, but how do I zip the files? I used to use a program called Winzip when I had a dell but I don't think Winzip works on macs? Does it? Or do you know what program will?
