I think I might be playing this so called "Chameleon" in Jazz band. The bassline is even sicker when played by a trombone :D

Everytime we play it the conductor says "ok, that was good, now lets play it again, except raunchier this time"

Greyspoke Variety Live at the Pinnacle's second set is now up on Archive.org, I highly recommend that you give it a listen, if you've never heard them play before simply listen to the first two songs of that set and you'll be hooked. Also, I should have a concert up from July that I haven't posted on here on YSI, and that should be up in a week's time. Not the greatest recording, but it does include the March of the Panda's which hasn't been on any other recordings.

But I want to know why no one like the Consumer Protection Agency has filed suit against Sony for basically invading their customer's privacy.

DSO put on another epic New Year's show. With many an epic song. Best performance of shakedown street that I've ever seen.
...and with Greyspoke playing in between sets, we were treated to 6 1/2 hours of music of glorious and mind-bending music.

Pirate Satellite

My Morning Jacket is really, really, great. One of the best live bands I've ever seen and incredible studio albums, too.

If anyone wants some of their stuff, IM me at Piratesatellite. If anyone has anything to trade, (especially the new Phish show,) that would be even better, because I'm running low on jam band music. I have four MMJ albums and a live show.

Jam2Me
01-08-2006, 08:47 PM
Whot he hell is My Morning Jacket, on jambase they got voted best album of the year by like everyone and they came to a venue near me I had no clue who they were (prior to all the voting etc.)...I didn't think they wear a jam band, the few tracks I downloaded made me think they were like Death Cab For Cutie or something.

jpj

Trey's Shine didn't even make JamBase's top ten and I know it was better than The White Stripes.

Lately Jambase has been using the term jamband too loosely. I know it's definition is broad, but there are limits.

edit: I can send anyone My Morning Jacket - Z if they want to hear it. Pretty overrated IMO

Yeah, Z might be a little overrated, but I think At Dawn, The Tennessee Fire and especially It Still Moves are genius albums. It Still Moves is the jammiest they've ever been, and I'd argue it's the best.

I love the spirit of these type of bands, although I think the main factor would be the improvisation among the different musicians of the band. I mean, be bop wouldn't be "jam band" stuff, but "A love supreme" and many jazz aproaches definitely would. I love that spirit in music. We could even say that the so called "world music" (is there any "non world" music?) has the same spirit most of the times.

So, along with Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Smith, Kroke, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and many others, I would choose these bands as my favs:

Grateful Dead
The Other Ones
Allman Brothers Band
Little Feat
Frogwings
Derek Trucks Band
Zappa
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Medeski, Martin & Wood
Gov't Mule
Phish

I'm Spanish, so I've hardly had the opportunity of seeing them live, except for Phish and Gov't Mule.

I remember Phish's visit to Barcelona as one of the best experiences I've had.

I've just downloaded the first song and while I was listening to the intro I was thinking "mmm... it sounds a lot like Grateful Dead". Then it became pretty obvious since it's a cover. I like the way they sound. Thanks, I'll check them out. At the beginning it also reminded me of Dickie Betts' playing.

Talking about this kind of guitar players, I forgot to name one my favourite artists among the jam band scene: Steve Kimock. Do you know his music, Kmidura?

KMidura
01-20-2006, 11:16 AM
Heard a lot about Kimock, heard his music once or twice, but nothing significant, if you could recommend a show that's on the archive that would be excellent.

As far as Greyspoke Variety goes, they play about 75% originals, and their covers range from the music of typical Jambands - Grateful Dead (Eyes of the World, Feel Like a Stranger), Phish (Mike's Song), Allman Brothers (Whipping Post, Elizabeth Reed)- to random **** -Chariots of Fire, Oh Canada (Canadian National Anthem).

The set that you've heard part of, and the second set (listed on the archive as 2005-08-20) is prime Greyspoke, if you want a quick sampler of some of their originals, I'd say listen to Pale (2005-08-20), Eight (2005-08-18), Babushka's Demise (2005-08-18), and March of the Pandas - 20 minute + instrumental (2005-08-18). That being said though, as any good jamband does, a lot of their music feeds off context, they like to tease songs, and go into and out of songs frequently. So, if you like what you hear, do yourself a favor and download both sets, listen to them back to back, and enjoy.

The filler band's are all very good, but I agree with Jam2Me in that despite their abilities, their styles and music doesn't necessarily appeal to me. To me, Bonaroo is getting more and more commercial, and the music is becoming more and more mainstream. I mean... Bonnie Rait? She's a great artist, but does she belong at Bonaroo?

I thought it was actually really good, especially some select songs (i.e. Little Faces, Oz is ever floating, oysterhead, rubberneck lions, and pseudo suicide), and there are like three trey-sounding acoustics on there that kinda bring down the weirdness a bit. And they are three very talented musicians, and i think it was a great mix.

Yeah judging from this live show I just got from nugs, they're great. I'm listening to them cover I've Got A Feeling (Beatles) now. Great organ and guitar solos and solid rhythm section. Can't wait till tomorrow night. Tickets were cheap too, just 15 bucks. Good deal.

jpj, I haven't heard of that festival, but I looked it up on jambase and it sounds pretty sweet. Sorry to hear you can't go.

Badmoon, (or anyone else), have you ever heard of a bluegrass band called Hot Buttered Rum. I've only heard one song, but it was great. I should pick up their cd.

I'm pretty sure they've only released one cd and just released it like a month ago, but I was reading something about them on jambase and my music class teacher played one of their songs for us, called Well Oiled Machine. Download it and give it a listen, I was pretty impressed. Good lyrics as well as good bluegrass playing.

Yeah that's actually where I heard it from too.

Anyways, Tea Leaf Green were ridiculously good. So much good jamming. They really had great chemistry. Here's the setlist if anyone cares:

Set 1

These Two Chairs
Moonshine
Baseball
Papa's in the Backroom
Criminal Intent
Earth and Sky
The Invasion
Country Seduction
Precious Stone
No Blanket
Stormcloud
I've Got a Feeling (Beatles cover)

Set 2

Lil' Hood
Morning Sun
Wet Spot
Las Vegas
GeorgieP
Waiting for My Man (VU cover)
Reservoir
Hot Dog >
Kali Yuga
Just Like Tom Thumb Blues (Dylan cover)
Professor's Blues
Deep River
Asphalt Funk

Encore1:
Planet of Green Love

Encore2:
Eminence Front (Who cover)

I assume the setlist is right because I got it off their official site forum. But outside of a few downloaded songs, I had never heard them before so I didn't recognize almost all the songs. Very long and awesome show. The keyboardist/singer was great. He played some really sweet solos, and had a great country-rockish voice that added a pretty unique sound to the band. The guitarist was brilliant and he was really on fire throughout the show. And the bassist and drummer were able to create awesome funky grooves. They just played together really well. Great show.

And does anyone know U-Melt? They opened the show and they were pretty good. They had some good playing and jams but their singing could have used some improvement.

per Wikipedia:
The term jam band is commonly used to describe psychedelic rock-influenced bands whose concerts largely consist of bands reinterpreting their songs as springboards into extended improvisational pieces of music. The term less describes a set genre of music than it does provide a label for vastly different bands for whom the only link to each other is this improvisation.

Anyone looking for a show recommendation, I suggest you check out the show 2006-01-25 Greyspoke Variety at Nectars. The Pale is out of this world, and the sound quality is excellent for once.

I'd also suggest The Breakfast, Raq, String Cheese, Yonder Mountain String band, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

I ordered 'Taught To Be Proud' by Tea Leaf Green off of Amazon.com, but I'm not going to have it by this weekend and I think I'm going on a long drive to visit some schools. Is there a chance someone could hook a brotha up? It's ridiculously good and I'd love to have it for the drive.

I think the great thing about jam bands is how diverse they are. You have psychedelic jam bands, blues jam bands, folk jam bands, bluegrass jam bands, jazz jam bands... and a lot of jam bands take many different styles of music and fuse it together to create a unique sound.

I don't have Taught to Be Proud yet. But you could always just get a bunch of their stuff off of http://www.archive.org which is what I do. But I'm actually about to go to the cd store, and if they have it (probably now), I'll probably get it and then I could hook you up. But yeah, the chances of that happening are pretty slim. I've been listening to so much live TLG stuff. They've dominated my last.fm 3 weeks in a row.

Man, there are so many freaking concerts here the weekend 4/21-4/23. First of all, 4/20 is a pretty special day in the jam band world, so there a bunch of shows then. Particle is here 4/21, and I already have tickets to TLG for 4/22. And Thursday night is the jammys, which will have a tribute to Frank Zappa plus performances by moe., Little Feat, Bela Fleck, Blues Traveler, Richie Havens, and a bunch of other bands I'm too lazy to list. Now there's no way in hell my parents will let me go to this on a Thursday night, but it would be really freaking sweet if they did.

Plus, all weekend there's the Green Apple Music Festival to celebrate Earth Day but you have to buy tickets separately for each band, not one ticket for the whole thing.

I already have tickets to TLG, and I probably won't be able to go to more than one show in one weekend, but maybe I can convince my parents to let me go to Blues Traveler or Particle too.

Guys, http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=8179

I love most every song on the album... live. I guess the problem was that I had been introduced to all those songs in concert, and they just don't even come close in a studio format. Also, it felt like an extremely short disc (I don't have it in front of me, but I don't think the overall playtime was over 60 minutes). The other part might have been that it was so hyped that my expectations were way to high.
[Edit: overall play time on ELB is only 49 minutes, with 11 tracks. Way too short of songs for my liking. I know it's studio, but even still...]

All you have to do is send an email to the one listed above, and it'll put you on the mailing list.

After doing so, it will send you an email back detailing how to send a message to the group. I'm pretty sure that all that's involved in that process is sending your email to the address jambandmailinglist@yahoogroups.com, and then it sends it to all on the mailing list. However, you do have to be subsribed in order to do so.

My thoughts are, whenever one of us wants to send an album to the listserve all you have to do is upload it to YSI or rapidshare, and then send the link in an email to the group.

jpj

Just to make this perfectly clear, you must email jambandmailinglist-subscribe@yahoogroups.com in order to signup. Then respond to the initial email. Signup, and it will send you the "welcome to the group" email.

Also, does anyone have So Many Roads? I lost the set a while back and I'm real pissed.

I know it's a pain in the *** to send 5 files, and am more than willing to trade other box sets. ie. Dead Live at the Filmore (missing disc 2), a few live Phish albums, a few Dick's Picks, How the west was won (Zeppelin), Closing of Winterland, Allman Bros at the filmore.

New Greyspoke Variety recording on archive, and it is by far the cleanest audio -wise and very clean playing as well. It also features two songs that have never been posted before, and a third where the only recording was iffy. I HIGHLY suggest giving it a listen. Only thing is that when it was posted, duplicates were made of every track, I've done an error report, and it should be cleaned up soon, but you can still grab all the songs no problem.

If you have an archive.org ID, and you do give this show a listen, please review it, the guys love compliments, but they like constructive criticism as well. All it takes is to write one sentence, thanks guys, and happy listening.

Anyone know what band they actually use for the music, I know at one point Phish is clearly on stage, but I'm wondering who they use for the actual music. I've become so obsessed with TLG that I've started to hang around there forum a little, and everyone on there said the Chicago show was pretty nuts, so I hope you enjoyed it if you went. The setlist looked quite awesome.

Anyways, best TLG shows: The 3/11 is the first show I got, is their most popular on the archive, and is the one that I give to my friends who are new to them. It's a great show. Definitely not my favorite, but a great way to start out.

My personal favorites are 4/22/06 (amazing + I was there), 4/7/06 (Filmore West, 'nuff said, soundboard on nugs), 3/10/06 (1st TLG show I went too and my first real taste of them), and there late night High Sierra set which is just plain crazy. There shows seriously just keep getting better and better though, so grab one of their more recent shows.

Thanks for the recommendations, and yes the show was great.

As for the mailing list, I just hit finals week, but am done as of 7 CST today, so it's quite possible I get a show out tomorrow. I'm thinking Live Phish 18, as I just downloaded it, and it's magnificent. The other possibility is a CD I just downloaded which is a Regae tribute to the Dead, very intersting stuff.

As far as studio Albums go, "Picture of Nectar," and "Billy Breathes" are great, (though most Phish fans will kill me for saying this, "Farmhouse" might even be a good one to try out, especially if you like the alternative music scene) As far a live stuff goes, you might consider "A Live One"

So it turns out New Monsoon has played in some guys backyard in my town (population just over 4,000) the past two summers, but that was before I got into jam bands. They can't make it this year, so the Hot Buttered Rum String Band is playing. It should be pretty cool.

I saw this band in CT and they rocked my socks off! At first I didn’t know what to expect. However, these guys have some real funky grooves!! I believe that they are now playing around the CT area. There are a couple of good shows of theirs on archive.org. I am currently loosing my mind listening to http://www.archive.org/details/BigM2005-11-19.shnf . The band is called “Big Meat” and their music is well worth a listen!

Just a word on this band from Vermont - Assembly of Dust...I grew up on Strangefolk and all the Wormtown Trading Co. festivals and I was skeptical about Reid's new project ever since I first heard of it. In fact, I was downright angry that he left our New England pride because of graduate school, all the complications with Jon's cancer, creative stagnation, etc. Bullshit! The Assembly of Dust is nasty! While their Bonnaroo set in 05' was absolutely rocking - http://livebonnaroo.com/frameset.asp?downloads - I had yet to see them again till Langerado over spring break. They opened up with this new tune off their newest album Recollection, which by the way is comprised of nearly all sweet songs, called "Truck Farm." The rock tune really woke the weary eyed early risers and truly shocked the audience with not only their musicianship and prowess as a raw live act, but also with Reid's ability to continually break out seemingly new, yet always beautifully written tunes. I caught them next at Summer Camp, which saw AOD take over the stage during moe.'s headlining slot for a segue out of "St. Augustine" into the old Strangefolk tune "Westerly." I was speechless. Then two weeks ago I saw them at Mountain Jam, and although the setlist wasn't as rocking as the week before, it still solidified the fact that I am a new wholehearted Assembly of Dust fan. Reid's songs are comparable in their sincerity and passion to those of Crosby Stills and Nash's most beloved tunes, while the ability to discern the different instruments apart from each other is reminiscent of The Band. The point is with these guys is that they play with PATIENCE!!! A skill that most bands don't even dare try to implement into their shows. Sometimes taking two to three minutes between songs, the Assembly of Dust has the ability to fill the soundscape unlike Strangefolk did, though still maintaining the capacity to allow their jams to develop organically into gorgeous climaxes. Please check these boys out, they'll be playing at the L.L. Bean Summer Concert Series this Saturday in Maine and then down the road a bit at All Good. Check out "Whistleclock," "Truck Farm," "40 Reasons," and "Grand Design" off their new album Recollection and I promise you won’t be dissatisfied. You can check out streams of AOD’s new record at http://hybridrecordings.com/recollection/
