The Samples...they are easily one of the worst Jam Bands I've heard. But maybe it's just their recorded stuff.
I downloaded some stuff...it's not that bad, what songs do you have?

i posted my band a little bit back, don't get your hopes up on getting a lot of feedback, only a couple of people said anything about us... http://www.purevolume.com/madagom just thought i'd post it again for the heck of it
I enjoyed the songs, you guys certainly have talent. The only thing that bugged me was that your drummer seemed a little obnoxious for the type of music you guys played played. But it was still great. :thumb:
edit: I also liked how you didn't try to sing like the majority of the bands on PureVolume. And notice I said "try", If any of you have singing ability, go for it.

2 albums worth.
Yea, I own one. Quantum 5 string like Cactus. It's not really a trend....it's a known fact that Modulus's are just about the most versatile, best sounding, best quality basses made! The sound really just blows me the hell away. I think Phil Lesh played the first one in the 70's, and from then on it has been the choice of some of the best bassists in the world, Jam bands or not. But, jam band members tend to be more musically talented than musicians from other genres...a thank you very much ;)
I love the sounds mike can get with his
the slap tone and pick tone is great...but theyre pretty expensive :upset:

yeah, none of us have any vocal talent. there isn't anyone that we know that can sing either, but if they did they'd probably get bored from all of the instrumental stuff.
Jam bands don't need extremely talented vocalists. Just as long as they can stay in key.

Yeah Trey and Jerry aren't very gifted singers but they definitely get the job done, and done well.
They made up for it with great guitar skills.

Well, to you they are good (Well, at least your saying that to make yourself seem right), but there is no doubt that bad bands also stick together, and play large arenas. Because it is after all, all opinion. And to me, those bands suck, so they completely go against your silly logic.

Yeah I know it's my opinion it's also the opinion of millions of others who frequent their shows because they love their music which gets them the notoriety to play at huge festivals like Wakarusa. If they sucked then they would not be having huge tours and no one would buy their CDs, which is your silly logic.

Yes..it's irrelevant unless you named two jam bands.

The logic of opinion...here it comes...It sounds bad = it is bad.
Now apparently to two users (so far) this band is bad. Which makes your logic silly. I am sure there are bands you hate who play large venues or sell millions of CD's.

If you wanna use opinions as your argument I can use it against you, in my opinion OAR and The Samples are good. That is also the opinion of many others who listen to their music. Bands don't become popular by sucking, they're obviously doing something right.
The logic of opinion...here it comes...It sounds bad = it is bad.
I have a hedonistic philosophy when listening to music..if it sounds good it is good. "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees sounded good, it's a fun song and it was great to dance to, therefore it is good. The Samples sound great live, I'm seeing them live, so I'm guessing it'll be a good show. Oh wait nevermind that is silly logic, they sound great live so the show will suck...therrre we go :o

I don't know if you are trying to some how be original in this conversation with that thought, or you believe you are one upping me, but "It sounds bad = It's bad" and "It sounds good = It's good" are the same logic. Your original logic was that majority rules; if more people like it than don't, they must be fabulous.

No I'm disagreeing with you, I thought that was clear but I guess not...
I hate metal. Ozzfest probably sells out wherever it goes. They msut be doing something right, like playing good metal music otherwise no one would go.
It's hard to keep thinking of examples since you can't just understand facts or opinions at face value. Phish is good, do I have to explain that to you? They toured and stayed together for many years because people kept buying their Cds and attending their shows.
Music is subjective to the listener or rather an individual , not the audience as a whole.
Backstreet Boys have sold millions of records, therefore they are good...well, not in my opinion. But thats where the secret is as its all opinon. Obviously the people who bought their records think theyre good but I dont, therefore it is all opinion.
Golden rule for music: "if it sounds good to you, it's bitch'n. If it sounds bad to you, it's shittty."—Frank Zappa

Oh, so because everyone but you likes Ozzy Osbourne, that must make him a good artist, no matter what you think. Sure he did something right, but that does not make him a good artist, because good is all opinion.
Phish is good, do I have to explain that to you? They toured and stayed together for many years because people kept buying their Cds and attending their shows.
And because they sell CD's they are good. That is beyond stupid. They are good because you like their music. Now let's say I don't like their music, then they are not good to me (IMO!!!!!).
Why do you not understand what I am saying. I have said it countless times.
EP gets it, SplitOpenAndMelt gets it, I get, most get it, why don't you?

Let's get back to some friendly discussion: What have you guys gathered about Trey Anastasio's new band. They played for the first time on 4/1, and I don't like the reviews I'm seeing. Trey played with Mr. Crowe's Garden (Black Crowes) at Higher Ground very recently. That would've been cool.

And continued me saying everything I previously said was my opinion (Get use to it; I'm pretty opinionated). And then some how, you got the idea that because one dislikes a band, it is irelevant, because they sold a bunch of CD's, or whatever. We then continued with me explaining the same thing over and over and you agreeing with (But not knowing). Now, hopefully, you'll realize that just because a band is adored by millions, that doesn't make it a fact that they are "Good".

There's been a couple of shows taped since one was last put up on Archive.org, but they hate to put up shows that aren't super tight, and seeing as how Mike had to rush in from NYC without any practice in order to make it in time, I doubt they're going to want to put this one up. That being said, it should be mastered within the week, so it is completely up to the band. Even if this one doesn't go up, they should be playing another gig fairly soon, and that one will most likely be going up, as it will be back at the Riley Center, and the demand for copies of that show should be quite large. If you'd like to plead with them, feel free to email them at greyspokevariety@yahoo.com.

Heya gang,
My first post in this area but this is where I belong. Jam bands and the blues are my favs...so here I am...
To catch up to you all, my fav jam bands are:
Gov't Mule
Allman Brothers
Widespread Panic
some Dead.. Loved Jerry not a huge fan of Weir's stuff.
the rest is blurry..lol
On the drug issue..hhmmmmmmmm to me it doesn't matter. as a drummer who has been in many jamming situations..yes drugs do happen..and for the most part "help" the jam experience. however anything in excess is bad..lol
so I will bet most of the bands we are taking about have done, or are doing drugs.. let's just pray its getting stoned and not heroine.. I don't want to loose anymore excellent musicians to that garbage..

Amen Thornis. I'm a gigging bassist. I love to jam. There's nothin like popping a good handful of shrooms to fuel a long jam(for me at least). I do have trouble playing with ganja and alcohol in my system...I lose all sense of creativity.

Why can't you accept the fact that they use massive amounts of drugs? You'll be hardpressed to find a band that doesn't use drugs...especially when dealing with jam bands.
I don't believe in associating Jam bands with drugs, because in the case of Phish it's not what they are all about. However, Split Open and Melt has provided solid evidence that they still do drugs, which I'm fine with because I do too. I have no problem with drugs if that's what you think.
Tomorrow night on one of my PBS stations Derek Trucks, The Codetalkers, and Jeff Lang are gonna be on so you might want to see if it's on around you.
Derek Trucks = sex. Do you know what the program is called?
Mountain Stage, I think it might only be a West Virginia thing, though.

i dont even really enjoy calling it jam band but what ever turns yall on...
i would have to say the leader of the jams right now would have to be WSP and then there are many others..(ex: string cheese incident, moonshine still, acoustic hookah, yonder mountain string band, government mule, derek trucks band etc..)
as for all of yalll who are saying that Allman brothers band is a jam band , the answer is no, allman brothers are so good and legendary they are in a whole different category by themselves. even if they did go in a category it would be classic southern rock. i know derek trucks is a part of the allman brothers band now but the derek trucks band plays different music from the allman brothers so it wouldnt be in the same category
and i have noticed phish is being placed on these jam band lists also, i think that also needs to change because phish has a unique sound only a few jam bands can even try to copy. phish would also have to be in a category by it self, not because it is legendary, but becasue it will be legendary after they get back together

Well, if you break the Allman Brothers down, they even fit the Jam Band description better than most other Jam Bands. And as them being in a category of their own..."Allman Brothers" isn't a genre. And yes, they could be classified as Classic Southern Rock, because who says a band has to fit into one genre.
and i have noticed phish is being placed on these jam band lists also, i think that also needs to change because phish has a unique sound only a few jam bands can even try to copy. phish would also have to be in a category by it self, not because it is legendary, but becasue it will be legendary after they get back together
God! I was checking on Allmusic.com, and I noticed under the genre choices, there was no Allman Brothers or Phish genres!!!.
If any band is a Jam Band, it's Phish. As for the bolded comment, not every Jam Band is trying to copy Phish. Jam Bands come in all different types and forms. This reminds me of an ignorant statement Tangy Zizzle once made, stating "Ben Harper is too good to be a Jam Band".

How is that being funny. It is not his opinion that they are jam bands, they are jam bands. The term jam band came about in order to describe bands such as the Grateful Dead and ABB. Phish came later, and not only are they a jam band according to themselves, but many consider them to be the defining jam band. It seems to me that you believe that once a jam band becomes well known by the mainstream culture they lose their title. This is obviously not the case. You are entitled to believe they are not jam bands (though you'd be wrong) and you are also entitled to express your belief, but if you expect to change any of our minds, cite reasons as to why you don't believe them to be a jam band rather than merely insulting people as that only proves our point that you don't know what you're talking about. You can't come up with logic to prove your point, so you try to call people gay instead? Real convincing arguement you go there.

alright, dont ever mention phish being like the grateful dead because that is not who they are. they are not trying to be like the grateful dead. they have been working hard since the earlier 80's to break out of being called a grateful dead cover band. they created thier own style that is fun and different. they improvised jamming to a higher degree no one had imagined.

Firstly, I didn't say they were like the Grateful Dead, I said they were in the same genre, which happens to have a very wide definition. Secondly, who the hell would call them a cover band, I personally have never heard them play a Dead song, and even if they did cover one or two they certainly don't do it enough to be considered a cover band. Thirdly, I never insulted you, you might want to go back and read what I said again. Finally, thank you for essentially admitting that they are in fact a jam band.

are you ****ing kidding me? phish started out covering some grateful dead tunes such as scarlet begonias, eyes of the world, fire on the mountain, bertha etc.. but then they stopped playing those songs so that they wouldnt be compared to the grateful dead like your gay *** is doing. if you knew anything at all you would know that people have been caling phish a second take on the grateful dead for thier whole history
jsut becasue i said phish improvised jamming doesnt mean anytihng close to them being a jam band. if a punk gothic band jammed for 15 minutes in one song would they be condsidered a jam band? why do you think phish is a jam band and if it is then why. what your characteristics of jam band?
phish plays a wide variety of different music which means you can't put them into one specific genre.

what is the official meaning of being a jam band then?
A Jam Band (generally) is a band that has influence from the Grateful Dead and/or the Allman Brothers Band. Even though some of their influence is loose on the occasional Jam Band there is some there, for the Grateful Dead and the A.B.B. paved the way for these Jam Bands by doing what they are now known for (Improv, bootlegging, constant tours, influence) but much earlier.
For one, Jam Bands perform free form improvisation frequently. However, many bands do that, so why aren't they called Jam Bands? Well, Jam Bands are notoriously known for the amount of influence they bring in; it is usually common to hear a band use a variety of different genres. The genres are usually American Root (Country, Bluegrass, etc) genres and Jazz, however, Rock is usually the base of their music.
Aswell as high influence, Jam Bands are known for their constant touring and performances at festivals. It's quite easy to catch a load of Jam Bands coming to your town during the year, because they tour constantly. You can also usually bring a tape recorded and record it.
That's just a basic definition (if you ask me). Books and such have released others.
phish plays a wide variety of different music which means you can't put them into one specific genre.
Jam bands don't have to fit into one specific type of music. Gov't Mule plays for the most part blues-rock, where SCI is more along the lines of jazz and bluegrass. They are both jam bands, are they not?

i think phish is to magical to be considered just a jamband as so many others are called; and no, phish is not a genre of music, but can you say what genre do they fit in? yes they had a lot of jamming going on in their music and were known for their live performances, however, so many other bands that do not tend to jam out as much are also considered jambands. i see where panicphire is coming from on this one, although he is not making his point as clear, but it is hard to actually determine what makes a band a jamband.you cant describe phish in words, let alone put the guys in one category as being just a jamband when they are so much more than that...

if a punk gothic band improvised and jammed for 15 minutes in one song, were known especially for shining specifically in a live environment, and incorporated aspects of other genres and what not into said jam then yes, i would consider them a jam band.
and to your second point in my quote, just because they play around with other varieties of music doesnt mean theyre not a jam band. rather, it strengthens my argument. the allman brothers and the grateful dead both incorporated other genres into their music and many people consider them the prototypical jam bands.
by the way, your posts are so riddled with typos that theyve gotten hard to read. maybe try cleaning it up?

Exactly. The Dead went from Psychedelia to Country-Rock like it was nothing, then later incorporated everything from reggae to hints of disco. The Allmans often used jazz improvisation along with blues-rock (Elizabeth Reed). Genre crossing, in the first jam bands.

This is my first time posting in this thread...and all I can say is I'm very ashamed of how you guys treat people with different opinions than your own.
Since everyone's arguing about what constitutes a jam band, I'd sum in up by simply saying a jam band is a band whose live performances are their strong point, instead of albums or videos. I'd consider Phish a jam band.
I recently bought Enlightened Rogues by ABB on vinyl (fifty cents!). I haven't actually gotten a chance to listen to it though yet, since I bought like thirty other albums and I haven't had a whole lot of time to get through them all (yes I realize the Allman Bros should have been higher up on my list). What do you guys think of Enlightened Rogues? I notice most people mainly refer to Eat a Peach and Live at Fillmore, so I don't get a chance to hear about a lot of their other albums.

Stupid disco corrupting good music. The worst part is that a lot of disco-influenced songs are really catchy and sometimes even good like Miss You by The Stones.
Well to make this a somewhat useful post I personally feel that a jamband needs to definite characteristics. Most importantly they improvise for extended periods on stage, and I also notice that pretty much every jamband has a ton of different influences. Phish has a ton of jazz influence, especially on their 1st album. I know this issue was already resolved but I just felt like getting my 2 cents in. :thumb:
