Well this thread would probably be with me, stick-munch (who changed his avatar  ) and jlightyearm only posting in it, but it's all good :thumb:

Anyways, anything to do with cricket goes in here :D

http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/JUL/016472_AUSSL2004_13JUL2004.html

I would like to say congrats to Shane Warne, he deserves it :thumb:

Warney, I reckon is a way better bowler than murali, so it was shown in the Sri Lankan tour this year. Even though murali took alot of wickets, he mainly took the lower end batsmen, and bowled alot more overs than warney. Warney on the other hand, has more of a variety with his bowling. Not to mention on the tour he got more of the better batters.

What do you guys think about Warney vs. Murali?

And, when will the downfall of Australia's dominance in cricket come around? My guess will be in 2 years time, not before that. Who knows? We'll still produce world class players, and be a competetive side no matter what.

:D

Warne, definitely.
Better variety, and an all round better bowler, in my opinion. Plus he doesn't chuck it.

On a side note, Jason Gillespie's mullet is the best ever.

I didn't face many deliveries from him, but it was easy to score off of him. I just drove it back at him, he was too fat to get down and stop it in time

How can that possibly help his back? All fast bowlers get bad backs when they hit 40.

Back in the old days, you either had to have a full front on action, or a side on action, nothing in the middle. They said it will ruin your back if you bowl with a half side/front action. Well they prove it wrong

What's their to study with batsmen? Just keep your head balanced, and always keep your eye on the ball. Have good footwork too, and that's it basically :thumb:

Aaaah...I go straight to the ball normally...

It's just in your mind, force yourself to use your front foot straight away to a fuller pitched ball. Your toes should be just beside the ball, and your head right above it. (this is for the drive though)

For bowling a fast ball, with good line and length :

Keep your head balanced, and keep your eyes on the top of off stump. Works everytime!!

Flintoff scored back to back ODI hundreds about a week ago when Tresco and Vaouhn made it past 10 about once between them. He batted sensibly at first getting himself in and then opened up at the end to post very good scores.

That was sensible batting and good thinking. Who do you think the opposition are going to be most scared of in the England team at the moment.

It will be Harmison, maybe Vaughn but flintoff won't be far down the list

Like 50 over cricket but only lasts 20 overs (so it's a slog fest!) but with extras to atract bigger crowds e.g. if a spectator takes a catch then they get a crate of beer etc

If Flintoff gets going we have a chance. If not....well at least it's hard to lose 10 wickets in 20 overs.

So you're saying that you rely on him to perform good?

The good thing about the aussie batting line up is that, even if all the star batters don't perform their best, the whole team in whole would of put up a pretty competetive run chase for the opposition. Even if they didn't do that, the bowling and fielding side will back it up wonderfully.

Yatty
07-16-2004, 08:35 AM
We've got at least one young player coming through who, if he sticks to cricket could become extraordinary. He's 16 now, is captain of the England Under 16 cricket and plays full back for the England Under 16 rugby. So if I were Australia I wouldnt get too cocky, as he has a choice of sports to kick some *** in. :D

So you're relying on this one youth player?

Sadly yes, without Flintoff in limited overs it gets pretty sad. Although Andy Strauss looks quite useful. Hopefully by 2007 World Cup most of your best players will have peaked. Although I cant see us being better than you by then.

Well I don't know much about the England side, but time and time again you guys make me believe that England's chances of being better than Australia is very limited.

The 2007 World Cup will be a beauty, the aussies will have alot more challenge. From who though? I don't know. We have a few young players that are excellent cricketers. Sadly though, they hardly get to play at top level because all the other star players we have. But hey? That'll only make the young'uns strive to become better.

Those can be questioned.

Best opening bowler? Come on, we've got McGrath, Gillespie, Lee, Kasporwicz, Bichel, Bracken...all of which have been opening bowlers, who's done wonders for the Aussie team. 6 > 1

Maybe they have the best all rounders, but we've got the most exciting all rounder. Andrew Symonds, I love watching him play, he just gets better and better.

Meh, I don't care about the fact he's supposebly a chucker. It's more about the fact that Sri Lanka constantly give him the ball in hopes that he'll get a wicket. If you saw the Aussie tour of Sri Lanka you would of notice that our better batters could control him. Most of his wickets were from the lower end of batting line up.

Yatty
07-16-2004, 09:02 AM
He spins it massively though.

I can understand that they produce pitches to suit him because if they played on fast bouncy wickets they would lose 60% of the time.

If jayasuira was still playing then they'll have a better chance. If they want to be a better team, they should look into more their batting side of things, and pace bowling. Yes Chaminda Vaas is a good bowler, and Zoysa is doing pretty well, but they will soon be retiring, and who'll take over? The "fast" off spinner that they open with at their home grounds?

That would suck. Like qwik cricket!???
That game truly is poor. You have plastic bats, and tennis balls.
No 7 year-olds should be given a real bat, though. The consequences would be unimaginable. But yeah, it sucks.

What is the Australian take on youth cricket, like the England Pride Side venture?

Well I don't think we've got anything like that, as youth cricket in australia is doing pretty good.

If you have a succesfull national side, then the youth will follow. This is my theory though :(

a good theory...btw australia is an amazing team...The handed us our a*s in the '99 World Cup Final. We had the lowest ever World Cup Final score in that game I believe?

In Pakistan you cant leave your DRIVEWAY without interrupting a game of street cricket, and our national team still blows the donkey...

You have some new talent coming through though i believe. And certainley the more people who are playing the game, the higher chance there is that some talent will be unearthed.

I think at the moment Pakistan are just a bit short after losing a few key players after Wasim, Waquar and Anwar left the scene

 the mick jaggers of cricket...

Its true though, we have plenty of very young people join the national team. Which is probably why players like Abdur razzak never got past grade 10...

on a completely different topic, did you know Wasim joined the national time by an error he made. He was supposed to go to the PIA trials but accidently went the to the national team trials. The rest is history...

No i didn't know that but by the way he turned out it was probably only a matter of time before he ended up there anyway.

what is the situation with Saqlain at the moment? I know he's injured now but he doesn't seem to feature in the team as regularly as i would have thought

The Jolly Pakistani

if he was in any condition to play then they would make him because he is indeed a talented bowler. Then again he is also starting to get along in years. So is moin and Inzimaam...the team is going to hell...

that is true...bowling has mostly been the teams forte ( waqar younis, wasim akram, shoaib aktar)

Its when we step up to the crease...afridi usually flies off the handle and gets himself caught but its very entertaining to watch

so where you from jlightyearm?

I'm from London and my name's James.

I think the team could do with just looking to tighten up a few areas for example if Afridi (however exciting he is to watch) stopped trying to hit every ball for 6 and worked out which balls he should leave then he could score many more runs.

And it's the same thing with Shoaib. He's a good bowler at the moment but if he thought about his game a bit more and tried to work out what are a batsman's uncomfortable areas and bowl there rther than just bowling as quick as he can which doesn't work against the best batsmen as he found out in the series where Hayden dominated him

He's been averaging 40+ in his last few series I think though...If he carries on developing (he's only 26), he could easily fill the role even better than he has been.
It has taken 6 years to get there... the sign of a non-World Class player if ever there were one

It's often the case that players under perform in County Cricket as they are not highly motivated enough, whereas others who are so dominant at County level can't hack it at Test level as they have too much adrenaline. Examples of the first case would be Strauss, Vaughn or Atherton and examples of the second case would be Hick and Ramprakash

his last test hundred against the Windies that set up Englands test win (3rd i think) was a slow dull hundred. Check it up on CricInfo

I agree to an extent, but if they're not motivated to do their day job they shouldn't be a cricketer. The others are just slackers who can't hack it

I forgot to check back here

Lol. It shows a new level of maturity by Flintoof though and you can't hold his pretty distant past form against him forever. The fact is there is no-one better.

The reason for different people's success and failings is all due to arousal levels. This is very scientific (i do PE A-level) but here goes, using Hick as an example.

For a county match he has the perfect amount of adrenaline to get into his optimum performance zone, and therefore plays well.

Test Cricket has a different level of intensity and so more adrenaline is released and so he goes over the optimum performance levl and therefore plays badly.

This the the opposite for Michael Atherton for example

Michael Vaughan as Captain?

i reckon its time for a change. there is nothing wrong with his captaincy, but his bating average has plummeted since he was made skipper.

As for flintoff, i believe he is a test no 5 and a optional bowler.

We have the fast bowling of harmison, Jones & hoggard among others, then collingwood, and giles and vaughan (?) with their spin. freddie sometimes bowls a pile of poo, other times he is brilliant.
