Album: Winning Days
Artist: The Vines
Released: 2004 through Capitol Records/EMI
Line-up: Craig Nicholls (vocals, guitar, percussion, moog) :upset:
Ryan Griffiths (guitar)
Patrick Matthews (bass, piano, keyboards)
Hamish Rosser (drums, percussion)
Here goes:
1. Ride: As heard on the recent iPOD t.v. commercial, this is easily the best song on the record. One of only a few songs with any real conviction behind it. Awesome guitar work. 4/5
2. Animal Machine: Decent guitar but lyrically poor song. Nicholls sings the verses like he can't really be bothered. 3/5
3. T.V. Pro:
Good hard guitar and vocal melodies but, again, lyrics let the side down. 2/5
4. Autumn Shade: this is just wrong: a sequel song to "Highly Evolved"'s "Autumn Shade"?! The first one was ****e enough! Good harmony but that's about it. 2/5
5. Evil Town: This is more like it! Hard, grinding guitar and Nicholls screaming like a dog with it's bollocks trapped in a bicycle wheel. This is classic vines. 4/5
6. Winning Days: The title track. Something very kinks-like about this one. Good harmonies and guitar melodies. A good song. 3/5
7. She's Got Something To Say To Me: Not too great. Short and sweet number, good hook and solo but not a lot else to it. 2/5
8. Rainfall: Very beatle-esque. Fine vocals harmonies and guitar work pleases. 3/5
9. Amnesia: Crap. Awful lyrics, terrible guitar work, shouldn't have made it to the pressing plant. 1/5
10. Sun Child: Twice released as a b-side, this song, however good, is worthless here. 2/5
11. **** The World: Oh christ. Childish, infantile, Nicholls screamimg like a tourette's afflicted retard. A poor end to this record.
Summary: Not enough to live up to those nirvana comparisons. A band of this calibre can do better than this.
