This hard hitting bass thumping band from Santa Clarita, California consisting of Sean Danielson (lead singer/guitarist), Derek Hedhill (vocals/drums) and Ryan Martin (vocals/bass). First, blew up with the radio buster "Bottom of the Bottle," which became a true song about drug's, or is it. Actually, "Bottom of the Bottle" is about lead singer Sean Danielson's obsession for music, which he use's the word "drug" as a metaphor to "music." "I do it for the drug's" (the first line to the chorus in "Bottom of the Bottle").

In Sean's mind, it's "I do it for the music." Which is a fair way to say it, because in musically driven soul's music is the ultimate drug. But, "Bottom of the Bottle" isn't the only good hit they have, their second radio hit, "Silhouettes" is doing well. With it's much slower beats and softer lyric's. "Silhouettes" is about Sean's parent's and how he didn't want to become them. Which many young teen's and young adult's relate to.

Other song's that might come through and become their next single's, "Every Sunday", which is a song about hypocrite's, "This is War", which is based about the anti-war spirit that the band has bestowed upon the Bush administration and their "War on Iraq" and Afghanistan. Also, "Eraser", the final track to their incredible debut cd. Which is a song about some of Sean's old girl-friend's that he wishes he could erase from his mind altogether.

Some of the songs on this album aren't extremely great, but I don't any of them suck. My favorite non-single songs are: "I Want My Life," "The Other Side," and "Every Sunday." I like how they have the "do-do-do's" during the bridge of "Every Sunday." And I also like how Keb' Mo' plays a steel guitar (I believe, don't quote me, too lazy to go get the booklet) on "The Other Side." And "I Want My Life" is a perfect acoustic ballad. But I like how they don't really sound like every other band out there. Because they blend an alternative sound with rock and a tad bit of metal, plus the acoustic songs. I'd recomend this to any rocker.

This is a terrible, boring, unoriginal band. And the review sounds like a press release or some kind of promo.

I think they are amazing AND original (maybe not the most original) but still. I really like the songs "Silhouettes", "With this Knife", and "This is War".

How are they any different than Switchfoot, Finger Eleven, Hoobastank, Trapt, Three Days Grace, or any of those other bands?

Um...they suck less than Switchfoot, Finger Eleven, Trapt and suck more than 3 days grace. If only the singer was better, they'd be a decent band, but he sounds like a mix of GC's singer and James Hetfield, which is not a good thing.

He sound like cobain with a stable voice

How do they suck mroe than 3DG. The singer for them sounds the excat same way in every song and they are the ultimate rip off of Finger Eleven.

This is a review of the album, not a messageboard to rip on them. If you wanna rip on the band, go start your own post on them. I personally think that SES is a great band with some inspiring lyrics.

You know, that's a problem in modern rock. Everybody tries to sound like Cobain or Layne of AIC. And with the exception of Sully Erna(pulls off AIC-style vocals pretty well), no one does a good job.
3DG suck, but their vocalist is allright, nothing special though. They do sound the same on every song.

this is a forum for everyone to comment and share their opinion about thread topic, which happens to be smile empty soul and their album. if you want to have a closed minded forum where no one shares opinions that are different than yours then you should start your own site you moron.

all the songs from smile empty soul that i have heard were almost pathetically simple in design.

this was a terrible reveiw because you didnt talk about the music, you only talked about the lyrics, and every single thing you said sounded canned

These guys have HORRIBLE lyrics. I think I could write better stuff then their sh*t in ten minutes. I used to like them, but have long since outgrown them.

You might want to consider a track-by-track review though. It takes more time but gives better info on the CD.

ok um these bands dont really sound the same....maybe to someone who has NO IDEA what they are talkin about, perhaps they are close as in the fact that they sing and play guitars and drums and such...maybe they use some of the same effects brands....but they certainly dont sound the same.

death to pop-punk if you can write better stuff then why dont you? im sure if your stuff is better they would gladly take a look at it, but maybe yer just full of it???

and last but not least i agree with theo on the fact that Seether is not pop-punk....this thread looks likes its full of a bunch of 12 year olds......

if yer not gonna review the music get out!

I don't care what anyone says I love ses and this cd. Id give it 9.5/10 only because of the song "This is War" I could never really get into it.

What's that song about his dad on the radio? That one really sucks a hard ****. Not that what he's saying isn't ****ty, but the way it's presented makes it 10 times worse then I ever thought possible. I thought Bottom of the Bottle sucked, man was I in for it. I also listened to the CD on the way to a festival which they played, horrible. -1/5 Easily, and that's deserving considering this band is worse then anything I could possibly imagine. So might as well make imaginary numbers...errr...i-1/5.

Please excuse the over usage of exaggeration.

You're free to post your own reviews in this thread, but Smile Empty Soul is still a crappy band in most people's opinions it seems. If we were all whiny kids, wouldn't we gravitate TOWARD this kind of music?

Kage
08-29-2004, 04:36 PM
No wonder the reviewer likes it...all he talks about are the lyrics and the vocals. Those are the kinds of people that like these crappy bands like Smile Empty Soul. People who know nothing about music but love a band's lyrics and singing and don't know anything about the rest of the music.

The only good song from them is an acoustic one from The Punisher soundtrack: "Finding Myself." Everything else sounds recycled.

your opinion man, but they are original as original gets.
not only do their guitarists play nothing but powerchords while the bass plays root notes, but their singer pretends to be Cobain revived or something like that. and they get their lyrics from all the biggest nu-metal/post-grunge cliches in the book.
