This is probably one of my favorite Cd's of all time. The best songs are Strong All Along, Sever, Flowing, Eons, Mindspin, Cant Fade Me, Life's Not a Race and Evolution. This CD has sounds from ever music style and is one of the best sounding, musically perfect Cd's ever. Chad Sexton is awesome on drums and P-nut continues to impress with his bass skills. I reccomend this CD to people who havnt heard 311 except for down or all mixed up because they dont do the band justice.
Freeze Time
This song shows SA giving a intro scratching with Tim Mahoney playing a heavy riff. The song has a great sound with a addictive chorus. The freestyle lyrics help keep the song sounding good from the verses to the chorus and it blends together well.
Come Original
This is a popular song from this CD that shows the reggea funk sound of 311. Chad Sexton plays a nice beat on the hi-hat and P-nut also gives an awesome preformance on bass. Its cool when they break into a soft period of reggea and go right back to the distorted guitar sound.
Large in the Margin
This song is pretty well rounded and is basic for 311. It has a steady guitar in the background with SA and Nick switching off on the vocals. This song is ok but not as fun to listen to because the guitar does not have a unique riff so it gets kind of boring.
Flowing
This is a powerful song with great vocals by nick hexum and a good backgournd guitar by Tim Mahoney. The song is melodic and sounds really good and is one of the albums best.
Cant Fade Me
This song shows the early style of 311 where addictive zeppelin style guitar riffs take over the song and nick and Sa freestyle with awesome lines backed by Sexton and P-nuts funk style rythems. Very well made.
Lifes Not A Race
This song reminds me of a Santana sound where the nick and tim mahoney blaze their guitars through solos and melodic sounds where the band really shows their ability to cover all genres of music. This is a very well made song with a very cool closing latin-groove ending.
Strong All A Long
Proves to be another fast paced but powerful song with upbeat lyrics and fast drums that really get your energy pumping. The backing guitar flows smoothy with the vocals and Chad Sexton plays the perfect beat to keep the songs feel.
Sever
Another melodic song from the CD includes powerful guitar similar to flowing with a more laid back sound from nick hexum on vocals. This song is very powerful but at the same time it is catchy and the effect is awesome.
Eons
A quieter song with a reggea sound backed by laid back guitar with an island sound. This song is good but not the best of this type that 311 has made.
Evolution
Has a cool drum intro with a catchy guitar riff mixed with smooth drums. The guitar is not distorted as much as the fast paced songs and it is perfect for the song. Again the vocals are right on target and the overall effect is another great song.
Leaving Babylon
This is a pretty well made quieter song on the album that is much different than Soundsystems other upbeat tracks. I like the mixture of the bass and the drums however i thought the vocals could have been a little better on this song.
Mindspin
This song combines the freestyle abillity of 311's vocals however it provides powerful driving guitar full of Mahoney's riffs. The chorus is catchy but does not sound as good as other songs such as Cant Fade Me and Sever.
Livin' and Rocking
Fast paced freestyle vocals with a catchy riff by Mahoney on the guitar. However the song could have mixed up the tempo to keep the main riff from getting a little old. I do think this song is very well made put their could have been more variety in the sound.
As for the whole record I think it contains some of the best songs 311 has ever made and also some of the best songs I have ever heard from any band.
If u prefer the freestyle, zep style guitar riffs from Soundsystem, I recommend you check out grassroots. An awesome Cd as well. Their old stuff is much better than the recent stuff.
