Exactly.
I'm a Motherwell supporter, and I mean, you have to face it, we're not as good as Celtic or Rangers, but all last season I think the fans put one helluva' a difference into what happened. We had some very low points last season, Phil O'Donell dropped her on the pitch and died. And I think in part it was the guys on the team, who had something else to keep 'em going, but without the support that the fans showed, there's no way we could have taken 3rd. A lot of teams would have said "Ok, there goes our best player, now we're done for", but instead the fans said "**** that, lets do this for Phil!"
It makes no sense to just pack it in because you're team is doing poor. They'll only continue that pattern if you continue that style of "support".

within recent times i can remember teams getting boo'd at for their performances. the team that stands out is chelsea. it was disgusting what happened the other night, simple mistake. real supporters wouldn't do it. any england player who done that would have gotten slagged, its the way its gone, its no longer loyal supporters, they are spectators, looking for goals, looking for a high. more like gladiator fans than football fans. and cole has been castigated way to much. there was a professor on sky talking about how much damage this will do to him in the short and long term. c'mon, his team won 5-1, he has forgotten it already, so has his team, but the press and these so called fans haven't. sh!theads, even though i personally don't like cole but i am pretty sure he doesn't give a ****
tbh i'm not sure it would've happened if it were another player, i think people were looking for an excuse to boo him.
for the most part i agree with you though, i just don't understand blaming chelsea. are saying the actions of chelsea fans influence others? that all the booing is started by chelsea fans (something tells me they wouldn't boo lampard...)?
Supporting a bunch of largely over-rated underachievers, who gain place on a team on reputation, rather than recent run of form is as hideous as it gets.
I don't get this attitude. I see this as an excuse all the time, yet if someone's club is going through a bad patch (and if you support a Prem team your players are over-paid) people will say "we have to stick behind the lads to get them out of this". you don't stop supporting your team.
Generally I'm not that patriotic either. One of the main reasons I love supporting Middlesbrough football club is the amount of local born lads coming through and developing into excellent pro's and it's enough to instil (even the most depressive fan like myself ) a lot of ****ing local pride.
The first sentence would be more understandable if it weren't for the sentence at the end, unless you take it far enough to say "I'm not English, I'm a Teesider" or something to that effect

no, its just the other reference point i had for booing recently was for chelsea playing at home and they got booed but that was during grant's time so maybe they had good cause since stamford bridge loved the special one
and cole's a dick anyway. not sure they would dare boo lampard, players like him and gerrard earn respect from other clubs supporters when they are on international duty. cole earns **** loads of money and lets everyone know about it. boo

I guess that answers that I suppose. Massive flashbacks to the Steve Staunton days, being pinned back for entire halves against what could charitably be described as poor teams. Playing two inexperienced yokels in centre midfield clearly didn't work and he refused to change the team to get a handle on the game, which is worrying for the future. On the plus side, Duff and McGeady were outstanding in the first half particularly- and the goal was truly world class- and if we can attack like that in future we will surely pull a few results out.
Gerrard's goal was ridiculous.

all this booing, its not from real supporters, i blame chelsea and the new breed of supporter they have introduced to football
Ok, so I have read your posts since this, and have simmered down a little. You almost admit that this comment of yours above is a complete load of shyte, so I won't go ranting off again. If have watched basically every Chelsea game for the past eight years (have probably missed a dozen, due to being overseas, no League Cup coverage back a few years etc. etc., the night matches being on a 4.30am in the morning (although I always get up)) and have heard the Chelsea fans boo at no one in particular - well, probably Roman and Peter K. - twice. Cannot remember more than that. I have NEVER heard us boo one of our own players, or if I have, I certainly can't remember it, and you would think I would remember something like that, init. So, there.
Gerrard's goal was ridiculousWhy? It was a placed shot from 20 yards, hardly the stuff of legend I'd've thought...???
Just got home from Brisbane, went to the match last night. **** there was the craziest storm 30 mins before kick-off, lightning hit the stadium and all, match was delayed for 30 mins. Qatar were absolutely pish. They haven't lost to any other team in their last 10 World Cup qualifiers, yet Australia have now beaten them 3-0, 3-1 and 4-0 in the last three times the teams have met. We dominated completely, and the game was over after Timmy Cahill scored following a very nice build-up after nine minutes. A double from Brett Emmo, one a really class finish, and a header from Josh Jesus Kennedy rounded off a great night. Was great to see the 'Roos again, haven't seen them since the best night in the history of the world. (Also known as November 16, 2005, Stadium Australia.)
Reckon Australia are the best team in Asia, and we'll make South Africa, and could go ok, again.

perhaps not. outside of us chelsea have only played villa. can't really rate him this season until chelsea meet some more serious opposition. next week will be interesting
Villa, Pompey (twice), City, Spurs, Bordeaux. You're right in saying that we have only played United out of the top four, but all of those which we have played teams did well last season. If we only judge players on their performances against the teams in the top four, then it's a pretty limited and skewed view. There's 60 games a season.

agreed, completely. but i wouldn't be so quick to say he is showing the form from '05 until we see him over a longer period. lampard is a very good player. its whether or not he can carry the sort of form he is showing and perform in the biggest of games. it will interesting what happens to him when ballack, deco, and maybe essien at some stage, are fit and imposing themselves on games

Spurs are cack and Bordeaux would probably be sat in the bottom 5 in the Premier League if that 'performance' at Stamford Bridge is anything to go by. Otherwise I agree that Chelsea haven't exactly had easy opposition.

Yeah that's true as well, I think it's probably worth noting that he has once again been the main man in SW6, with Deco, Ballack and Essien all injured, and he's been thriving. Deco back now shouldn't make a difference to Lampard as he was playing well when Deco was also playing (well), but with a full squad to choose from, it'd be interesting to see how it impacts on his form.
Zaki's second was awesome. Just got him in to my Fantasy team (still #1, thankyou thankyou) so fkn better not get injured in the 2nd half!

Dude stop changing your user name! What did your user names used to be before Spat Out Plath, I might remember you from the old days.
Three nil-nils, bit crap. Fellaini looks a good player. Anyone know why Cahill didn't play? He was very good for Australia on Wednesday, apart from the flight home I reckon he should've played. Toffees could've got a point if they had the great Aussie Timmy C I reckon.
Bremen Dortmund finished 3-3, cracking match, three goals in the last five minutes. Pizarro double in the last five.
Cahill is suspended, I think.

I'm going to be in England in Dec/Jan, and I'm looking to go to some Liverpool games (prefererably the ones vs Hull and Everton). How should I go about getting tickets while I'm in Australia? Where should I book?
RandyfromPennywise
10-18-2008, 11:37 PM
Hey mate, I've been to four matches in England, three times at Chelsea and once at Newcastle. For two Chelsea matches, I went on to the discussion boards on the official site and asked if anyone would be able to buy me a ticket and I'd meet up with them and pay them for it, and luckily enough both times I was lucky and good people did that for me, and was no problem. The other time was an FA Cup replay so just got tickets from the box office which was good, and the Newcastle match, my brother ordered them on the net a month in advance. Guess if you want to go to Anfield, you'd need to know what the deal is with ticketing, like at Chelsea, it's a bit of a gamble trying to get general admission tickets because they only go on sale a few days before a game (if at all), so for us - going all that way - it's better to have some kind of assurance that you're going to get a ticket. So yeah this might not've helped too much but this is what I did.
mph4ever
10-19-2008, 06:04 AM
only way get tickets without borrowing someone else's season ticket is to book through a travel agent and take a flight or hotel or ferry or bus and the ticket is inluded. often we end up meeting someone at old trafford and they give us their season ticket and we give it back after the game.
there are lots of season ticket holders around here also so sometimes you can get them to lend you their ticket for a consideration. are there forums with people on them willing to let their season tickets out for a price on the day?
RandyfromPennywise
10-19-2008, 07:05 AM
mph4ever I assume you are just talking about United, because you can get tickets to most grounds without too much fuss. United is hard, from what my brother has told me.
The way it works with Chelsea for home matches is that season ticket holders get their seats, then most of the rest go on sale to members - there are many, many more members than seats available, but not every member wants to go to every game. Then if there are any tickets left over, they go on sale to the public.
First time I went to Chelsea, a bloke called Nick gave me his season ticket for £40 and I used that to go to the match. Then I mailed the ticket back to him a day later. Guess that was pretty trusting of him to let me do that. The second time, a girl member bought one extra ticket for me and I met her at the ground and paid her the dosh.
Not sure how it works at Anfield though.

I agree,

Who are spurs honestly going to get who will do better than Ramos? He's an experienced manager and needs time, and no top manager will want to take spurs on especially if the chairmen shows an itchy trigger finger as far as sackings go.
Don't they used a director of football? I'm fairly sure redknapp said it yesterday. If so it's him they need rid of, selling star players and bringing in practically nothing to replace them, Pavlychenko is/was unproven in the prem, and the russian players have history of not adapting here, and Campbell on loan, which was only a softener for losing Berbatov after all the talk of keeping him.
I never thought I'd ever want to agree with Jamie Redknapp but he's right, United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea...the most successful english teams of the last 13 years, none of which have a director of football. I'm fairly sure those managers would walk if their chairmen did hire a director of football..

i know its frustrating. perhaps they are thinking that to break into the top four, and not be annual uefa cup hopefuls, they feel they need to fundamentally change the squad and how it goes about its business. perhaps that was not ramos' call but the director of football, or sporting director, comoli. perhaps it is the need of management and shareholders to get some of the £30m profit Spurs made this year.

Frank Arnesen is "Sporting Director" at Chelsea, whatever that means. He's like a scout who recommends signings, and is good with the youngsters. But I think you're right, the strong, commanding managers of the big clubs just wouldn't stand for any mingling with their affairs - and the players are the affairs of the gaffer. If you leave your team like that for a while I'm sure you will move up the league. Obviously your team hasn't been like this for the first eight weeks. One thing I would say is that you need one of Lampard or Ronaldo in midfield, that is basically essentially. Both are points machines.

Villarreal haven't looked particularly brilliant in either of the games I've seen this season, although I haven't seen tonight's fixture yet. Conceding three goals at home to a team that have barely managed a shot on target in their two previous encounters isn't exactly convincing though.
I didn't see this morning's match either, just saw highlights, but have seen them in La Liga and they look strong, they'll be top four there. Top four in the best league in the world can't be too bad.

And yeah, Berbatov was offside for both goals lol. But I'm not complaining, though I imagine a lot of other people will be.
Watching re-plays ftl though. God I hate the internet and its inability to stream proper video.

So Beckham is moving to AC Milan on loan in January. I honestly cannot see what he will add to Milan at all on the pitch, but judging by Galliani's comments I don't think they care as long as he sells lots of shirts.
Also did anyone see the ITV highlights last night? How did the presenter (forgot his name) deduce from the Juventus-Real Madrid game that the English teams are step above the Spanish clubs? I'm not going to disagree, our 'Big Four'>Spain's>Italy's, (although overall La Liga is probably a stronger league), but why even mention this in a game that didn't involve an England team. It was like listening to Richard Keys ('Del Piero must've been watching Ronaldo' what a load of crap)

That, and depth. England has four very strong teams. After that, it has been proven again and again, apart from the odd exception, the rest have no ability in European competition. Spain have Real, Barça, Atlético, Villarreal, Valencia and Sevilla who are all quality, experienced sides. So immediately, the top group is larger, and more interchangable. Think of the likes of Deportivo and Celta Vigo in the last decade. Spain is strongest from 5-20, I reckon that's fair to say. It's also the strongest technically. So I think it has a fair claim to be the best league in the world. Italy has certainly dropped in recent years. There's no doubt that England and Spain are ahead of Italy now. Don't get me wrong, I love the Premiership, but from an objective view, this is my opinion.

chelsea, manu, arsenal stand out as teams. this season will see if liverpool have managed the same. lots of other teams have done well in europe outside of this group in the uefa cup, and they have done well domestically as well. the fact that the top four are so far ahead of the others in their leagues and mostly ahead of any of the spanish teams you mention does not lead me to think that the rest of the english league is lame. there are some excellent teams there that would easily hold their own against mid table opposition from spain or italy for that matter
spanish football was king, but thats a few year ago. italians were up there too, even germany had a golden era recently, but right now, english football is best

But that's exactly it, when you say that English teams have done well in the UEFA Cup - apart from the fact that Spanish teams have done far better than English teams in the UEFA Cup in recent years - it's the Champions League where English teams would get found out. Atlético haven't been in the comp for 11 years and they've come in and are doing very well. There isn't one English team outside of the top four who would do anything in the Champions League. As much as we'd like to think so, teams like Atlético would kill the Evertons, Villas and Pompeys. And as for the UEFA Cup, well there's been three Spanish winners in the last five years, and it is seven years since an English side won one, and you have to go back to 1984 for the second last one. I think it just comes down to the tactical versatility and technical quality in Spain. The English game can be one dimensional.
excellent, well done. when is the final? where is it and do you get to go? or do they do it over two legs due to geography? The final is two legs, 5 November in Osaka and 12 November here in Adelaide (we are playing Gamba Osaka). They sold 10,000 tickets today to Gold members. They reckon that around 3,500 tickets will be left when they go on general sale next Tuesday, so I'll line-up and Venuetix and hopefully get one. Hindmarsh Stadium holds 17,000. (And I don't have membership this season because I'm going overseas and am going to miss half the season.) The minimum financial gain we are going to get now is $1.4m, which is big money for Australian clubs. This is very good!

And tbh the players have to support Ramos as he's brought them in and ultimately they're letting him down biiiiiiig time.
From experience also of following my team through the UEFA cup, the spanish league has strength in depth which we don't have in England. Villa could do it and they have the resources (big stadium, wealthy patient backer in Randy Learner, good players coming through, decent manager) to push on and actually make waves in Europe.
Middlesbrough aren't near that stage at all (I would also like to add that our poor showing at the weekend could have summat to do with our defence being ermm decimated via injury and suspension).

Spot on, I see Villa as the genuine challenger to the top four. Boro's UEFA Cup run was excellent. Big Dukes!!
Schalke destroyed Paris 3-1, only a late goal from PSG made the scoreline look respectable. I know Paris aren't one of the top teams in France, but they are one of the 'big' teams, and it just reinforces for me how strong the German league is at the moment, and what a quagmire French football is in at the moment. Really falling off the perch out of the top five leagues. It's really now the top four leagues (the big three plus Germany) and then a massive gap. Ligue 1 used to be quality, but the showings of Bordeaux and Marseille in the Champo lately have shown the lack of quality outside of Lyon. German league has really improved, they have good depth, with Schalke, Bremen, Bayern, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Leverkusen and maybe even Wolfsburg and Dortmund all pretty decent teams. Far, far better than Ligue 1.

The French and Dutch leagues have been in splints for nigh on a decade now. The resurgence of the German league has been interesting, and I think it's welcome, but I still think they have some way to come to challenge for top CL honours. When Milan gave up their interest in Adebayor, I remember Milan's president (or some sort of high-up role, one of the straightest talkers in football either way) admitting that Serie A is fourth behind the Bundesliga now. I don't agree with him, but in terms of spending power I suppose it's true.

Yep, although I don't agree that the Dutch has been declining for a decade, I'd say more like the last five years. Late 90s and early 2000s, the top three were all still very strong, then Feyenoord dropped off, and after Hiddink left PSV they were no longer a force in Europe, and yeah now Dutch league is probably about the same as Portuguese or below it. German league, there is a lot of money there, and there isn't much in Italy, but Italy is still stronger. England is so far above any other league in terms of money, it's really not comparable. I think this fact should allow for the likes of Villa to get in to the Champions League sooner rather than later, and the English league to keep on improving. At the moment, the top ten teams in England are all probably richer than any club in France except for Lyon. Pompey or the equivalent is far richer than Bordeaux or Marseille, which is really saying something. I don't know this for fact in terms of the clubs' bottom lines and profits, but in terms of spending power there is no comparison. And, in turn, the wages on offer, too. You'll earn more playing for Fulham than you would for Marseille, or Palermo or Udinese even.

Their current standing doesn't have anything to do with the team rating, though. It doesn't have an effect until the February update. I guess I "picked" Chelsea. Everything was right about them, the '97 FA Cup was the first club match from Europe I'd watched live I believe, Robbie D's goal was mind-blowing, blue is my favourite colour, I love the name Chelsea, I loved our kit, I loved how the team was coached by Ruud Gullit who I was aware of. I don't know, it was just the right fit for me.
And about the glory hunting, well I dunno, but it felt like it was the most exciting supporting Chelsea in 2002-03 and 2003-04. 02-03 was when Zola was on fire at 36 years of age, and we clinched 4th on the last day of the season against the Scouse, when the club was so far in debt it wasn't funny, and we went and got in to the Champo. Then 03-04, Ranieri had the cash to spend from the Russian man and it was very exciting times at Stamford Bridge, semi-finals of the Champions League, challenging for the Prem, they were great times. I am getting all happy just thinking about them. There was this buzz about Chelsea back then. I suppose it was still there in 04-05 and 05-06, but its went away in 06-07 and 07-08. I think Big Phil has brought it back though. I am enjoying Chelsea more this year than I did last year.
