I'd like to see the FA show some consistency and ban Terry for a extra game for launching an ultimately frivolous appeal.

It won't happen as he play for a top 4 club.

Tbh there is abit of a differance from pulling someone down, and slapping someone in the face :P

Mascherano had already raised his hands to him, and it was a push not a slap.

It's ok tho' we lowly supporters of clubs who don't have billions are used to being treated with a different set of rules to the bigger clubs.

Terry's better than any player who plays at any of your clubs. Better than fkn GAYrrard for sure. Anyone been watching how Lampard's been playing this season? Anyone been watching that ched?

Australia beat Uzbekistan in Tashkent last week. What a massive result. Massive game against Qatar in Brisbane next month, can't wait. Timmy C's back as well.

Adelaide United play against Kashima Antlers in the quarter-finals of the Asian Champions League on Wednesday night. Absolutely massive. Hopefully a 0-0 or a 1-1 or 0-1 to bring the away goal back to Hindmarsh on the 24th. Come on you Reds.

It means that he is a better player, a better leader, a better person, a better man. Danny Guthrie is better than Gerrard.

Villa are a solid unit who have reached that level now where they will consistently beat the teams that they should beat. At least that's how I see them. O'Neill's a good gaffer and he's coaching his side well. They should finish top 6 again, and really they should finish 5th unless another club has a massive surge: you would say that last year's 5th and 7th (Everton and Blackburn) won't repeat that, so by rights, Villa should finish 5th. They're pretty good. I like watching them.

****ing hell.

1 point out of 12, absolutely awful.

The thing that annoys me about Ramos, is that rather than improving players who have alot of potential like Lennon, Dawson, Huddlestone,(as someone like Moyes or O'Neill have done recently) he's just gone out and bought "better" players, which really hasn't paid off because there's little cohesion and understanding in the Spurs team.

Spurs to finish bottom half again.

Judging from what I've seen of Villa this season, they've got the defence to finish fifth comfortably, but whilst they're capable of thrashing lower-ranked teams, they'll struggle to get points off the top four.

ok, maybe top four is ambitious but i do think that if any of the the usual suspects falter then villa or everton will be there to take advantage. also, when they faltered recetnly there were few around to take advantage. this season slipping out of the top four could be a slippery slope to barely making the uefa cup with the likes of blackburn, boro, portsmouth and spurs hovering

I can't see Boro topping 8th either. Everton are probably out of the Champions League race already, but I'd still have them favourites for 5th if they can get a handle on their defence, which was easily one of the best last year but seems to have collapsed this season.

Defensively they're excellent and going forward with the likes of Carew, Agbonlahor, Young they ain't bad either.

But we've got Wheater back for the game against the mackems so thats good. Him and either Huth or Poggy will be too much for Sunderland's forwards who all seem a bit lightweight. Good thing Kenwyne aint back yet as well.

I reckon we'll win it 2-0 with Alves and Stewie.

On our final placement well in the centre of midfield we've been lacking a bit (Appiah on a free transfer would please me immensely) but other than that we've got adequate cover all over the pitch (barring only probably Goalkeeper's ffs) so we could probably finish as high as 7th. Not within the top 6 tho'.

It's just funny. John Terry gets sent off for a rugby tackle and gets his band overturned. Everton really should have strengthened their squad over the summer if they wanted to progress.

Shocking decision by the FA, the top four bias is ridiculous.

I'm not sure what else the FA were meant to do with the way things are currently.

Terry was sent off for serious foul play. Looking at a FIFA website about this, it seems to suggest that applies purely to dangerous tackles, like an unreasonably high foot or lunging in. Terry's rugby tackle isn't really comparable. Therefore Terry was sent off for an offence he didn't commit and thus it's correct that his card was wiped off. Because you can't get a yellow card for serious foul play (as far as I'm aware) he should've got no card at all.

If he was going to be sent off it would be for denying a goalscoring oppurtunity. But then because Carvalho was covering it should've only been a yellow.

That said I think it's ridiculous. The laws of the game need to be changed so that professional fouls are straight red cards regardless of where they happen on the pitch and where other players are. They also need to change things so that red cards can be downgraded to yellows, which apprently is not allowed at present. They also need to adjust things so that if a player is carded for one offence but actually committed another card worthy offence then they can change what the card was issued for.

RandyfromPennywise
09-16-2008, 11:00 AM
You're pretty spot-on Passenger. The laws of the game don't allow for any flexibility, and moreover, common-sense, on these issues.

So apparently Guthrie actually broke Craig Fagan's leg- is there any reason why he's not getting a season-long ban? It's absolutely disgusting.

It was a disgrace. If he plays before 2009, it'll be a joke. What's more, there are serious chances that he'll play again before Fagan does. Challenges like that make me so angry. I wish he'd get a 12-month ban, or 40 matches or something, but he won't.

poorquality

You're pretty spot-on Passenger. The laws of the game don't allow for any flexibility, and moreover, common-sense, on these issues.

Agree completely, which is why, from a lawful standing, the ban should of stood because of the fact Chelsea shouldn't be able to argue that it didn't warrant a card at all. But from a footballing standing it should be knocked down to a yellow, but they can't do that, I don't know what stops them, some force field or something apparently, a powerful footballing body can't fix their own rules for the sake of common-sense.

Plus, from a common-sense point of view, those sort of challenges SHOULD be a red card, simple as it's a deliberate move to stop the player in his tracks without making any attempt for the ball. Mis-timed tackles can result in a red card, going for the player and not the ball should be an instant red.

mph, are you watching Pats vs. Hertha on Setanta at the moment? I know Hertha are kind of crap by German standards, but Pats are really mixing it with them, despite the fact that Hertha are the side with all the internationals. Fahey and Quigley look like they play against teams like this every week; they're superb.

If he was going to be sent off it would be for denying a goalscoring oppurtunity. But then because Carvalho was covering it should've only been a yellow.

I'm not entirely sure Carvalho would have made it; Jo was in full stride when Terry caught him and he is a pacy lad. Still, it would have been too close to make the "last man" call. Vidic's foul on Saturday was much more clear-cut.

with regard to the top teams. there are the top four but depending on who takes points off who then we may end up with a top two. after that i could see the lower two vying for champions league with teams like portsmouth, villa, spurs, everton, boro, blackburn and city because if they all get into a fight then who knows who will take points off who

I don't think any team is good enough to break the top four this year.

Didn't see the Liverpool game but it they apparently just scraped it. If this is because Rafa told them to sit on their one goal lead, hasn't he learned anything from last season?

I expected Bordeaux to be a bit better than that, even though Chelsea weren't trying for 30+ minutes of the second half they still didn't look like scoring.

The Roma result is slightly surprising but they're not that great. The only players you ever hear about are the three local boys and Mexes and judging from their recent games against Manchester United they sturggle against well-organised defences. They're only where they are in Italian football because of Calciopoli and the fact that the people in charge of Milan are insane. Certainly makes that group more interesting in regards to 2nd place but if Chelsea got 18 points I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.

Tomorrow I reckon Arsenal and Celtic will win but Man Utd will draw.

Carragher is a great tackler but he has no pace and he's often caught out of position (aka the goal). Squirtel doesn't look the business and if Agger's not injured I don't see why he's not playing.

Marseille were just brutal. Elementary errors at almost every level. It says an awful lot that Cisse was willing to turn his back on Champions League action for Sunderland of all places.

Pastorius
09-16-2008, 05:36 PM
Definitely looking forward to more games with Riera in the squad, maybe with Babel on the right, or alternating Babel and Riera, who knows.

Agger should definitely be back in the squad, I agree. I had him in my fantasy team in anticipation of this, but Benitez doesn't want to put him back there for some reason.

I don't think any defender in the world playing the offside trap could have used pace to stop that goal.

Britney Diva
09-16-2008, 05:54 PM
I think Benitez is determined to replace all his good players with average ones and relegate them to the bench/reserves/selling them. I anticipate a move for Caleb Folan during the January window, at which point Torres will see out his contract in the reserves.

Pastorius
09-16-2008, 05:56 PM
I mean he is coming off an injury, but it's been a long time, at least give him some time at the end of matches to get him into it quicker, he's such a good defender.

No Keane tonight, but he did work his socks off against Man Utd, so I guess he deserves a break. Good to see Kuyt going wide for a change.

A lack of someone taking responsibility for playing the final ball was something I saw tonight, no-one wanted to make the run or play the ball.

if there was a breeze at all for rio at pitch side it would be hilarious, that lip would be flapping all over the place

i reckon zola's appointment is fair business. bit of a risk but if he is half as intelligent as a manager as he was as a player then he will shine brightly. could very easily be a staging post for the chelsea position in the near future as i don't see scolari staying longer than three years, maybe even two, and thats with success, once the next world cup is over.

Oh my dear lord (who is Zola, so kind of a little, ah, what would you call this then? Not sure) if Franco is the gaffer at Chelsea I will lose my ****. But, with the demands on being a gaffer at Chelsea, not sure it would be the best thing, 'cause unless he brought immediate success, then he'd be gone. That really sucks, you know. Yeah I hope you're right. I hope we win the Champions League with Phil, and a League or two. I'm not as certain as everyone else that he'll only be with us for two or three years at the most. Unless he's sacked, I don't see any reason why he couldn't stay for four or five years. He's about to turn 60, so he's still got good years ahead of him. And he seems to be enjoying it. But Zola as gaffer, to build a dynasty, that is the stuff of dreams. Di Matteo as assistant!! Bring back the glory days of 1997-98-99-2000!

They're still an absolute basket case at the back but they were clearly the better side. At this rate, I still see them struggling against any team in the top 10. Frazier Campbell looked the business when he came on, but they're going to rely heavily on Darren Bent if they're going to progress in the UEFA Cup. Given that it's traditional for Spurs strikers to spend about 6 weeks on the sidelines with a major injury every season, I think they might struggle.

City looked woefully disorganised against the Cypriot side last night. They still could have scored 10 goals comfortably though.

Everton showed good resiliance to come back after going a goal down twice, but they should have really had too much for the team they were playing, they just didn't perform to the expected level.

That's what I got out of what I've seen of the match, I watched the Spurs match though, I think he needs to start Campbell to be honest, he looked a different class when he came on and provided a perfect cross for Bents goal. Only trouble is do they want to rely on a striker that they won't have next season?

I don't see why not. Pavlyuchenko might will take a while to settle in and isn't eligible in Europe until the knockout stages. Darren Bent's usually a decent goal threat but playing with him is like playing with 10 men sometimes. Plus it would be rude not to play Frazier Campbell as much as we can, since we're apparently Man U's feeder club.

Reading's opener, which has been officially recorded as an own goal by Eustace, will go down as one of the strangest goals ever.

Stephen Hunt whipped in a corner which was contested by Noel Hunt and Eustace at the near post.

The ball bounced over the line - four yards wide of the goal - before being hooked back into play by Noel Hunt.

Reading's Andre Bikey headed back towards goal, where keeper Scott Loach made a save, but the linesman had already flagged - for a goal.

And referee Stuart Attwell gave the goal to total bemusement around the stadium.

I wish i'd seen this. Reading can't seem to play away at the moment so i'll take any luck but that really sounds shocking.

There was one player with like half an arm offside, I don't see how the ref could have called it confidently. The ref called it, not the linesman (the linesman was in the wrong position to call it too but that doesn't matter).

Keane and I think Torres too were offside. They definitely had an effect on the goalkeeper because they both ended up between him and the ball, so it was a perfectly good decision. The linesman was looking right across so I don't see how he was in the wrong position.

Decent first half from United. Scoring the goal seems to have shocked us back into sitting back like we did against Liverpool, which is kind of a worry. You'd think the champions of Europe would have a little more self-confidence than they're showing. Also, Ferdinand is probably playing better than I've ever seen him before. I didn't know he had it in him!

I watched analysis on a different station and they showed pretty clearly that there were 2 players ahead of the defenders when the ball was kicked. It was just poor positioning by Keane and Torres- they had no reason to be there.

We were lucky to come out with a draw in the end, though I'm sure Chelsea will consider themselves fortunate that we gave them a free goal. We did exactly what we did against Liverpool and put 9 men behind the ball and for the second time in 2 weeks a goalkeeping howler threw us right in it.

Referee was absolutely atrocious. United will get cited before the disciplinary panel for getting 7 yellow cards. Did anybody see a malicious tackle from either team in that match? Did either side crowd around the referee and protest? It's ridiculous.

How the hell did Ronaldo not get a card for his dive? It was the most obvious one I've seen for ages. Maybe the referee was making up for the fact that he booked 7 United players when only 3 deserved it from what I recall.

Couldn't believe the City-Portsmouth score when I saw it. The inconsistecy of almost every team in the league borders on incredible.

Frankinho, he has a history of shocking tackles to be fair. Players have every right to feel they are putting their bodies at risk playing against him. But the big question is: why did he do it to Possebon when Ronaldo was on the pitch?!

ADELAIDE UNITED defeated Kashima Antlers 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate tonight in front of a capacity crowd at Hindmarsh Stadium! GET IN! Was the best game I've been to in Adelaide, people sitting in the aisles, it was that packed out. We were all over them. Now we get Rivaldo in Adelaide in two weeks' time!! COME ON YOU REDS! Semi-finals of the Asian Champions League GET IN THERE!

Zico and Rivaldo will surely be no match for Aurelio Vidmar and Travis Dodd.

WHICH ball? It was an absolutely shocking tackle- there is absolutely no excuse for following through with your studs at knee-height. Granted, he got some of the ball, but it's the kind of tackle that ends careers and "he was going for the ball" doesn't really cut it.

Was a bit bad I admit but I've seen far far far worse and more malicious. Fact is poggy won the ball, he caught the lad accidentally. Fair crack he should be banned for the usual 3 games and thats it.

Like I said he's a good bloke just a bit over eager when he plays.

Adelaide United FC 1 - 0 Kashima Antlers

The only reason I find Pavlyuchenko's remarks surprising is that he has played under Guus Hiddink for two years, and as coach of Australia, Hiddink's trainings were infamous. His physical preparation was second to none.

Guthrie's was a fkn joke too, I said so here, as did others. And Kevin Davies on Clichy was a disgrace as well.

It's really good for the Adelaide boys to get that far. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the Victory. Twats.

October 8. Seven thousand tickets sold already, so it will probably sell out tomorrow or next week I'd say, pretty crazy. Gotta get in to town to get my ticket tomorrow!

Archie Thompson cannot be the best player you've seen in the flesh. Who have you seen Melbourne play??

Yeah it's massive. But I have to say that these Uzbekis are going to be awesome. They have ZICO coaching them, and a team with Rivaldo, and a full international player for Chilé - Villaneuva. Bunyodkor also have several full internationals for the Uzbekistan team. They will be formidable opposition. We must get an advantage at Hindmarsh in the first leg. Can't wait!

As for Urawa, they are probably the Asian powerhouse, if for nothing else than their amazing support.

Suprisingly, I'm still optimistic as a Spurs fan.

Pav has got his first goal, hopefully he won't be another Rebrov, we're through to the next round of the Silver medal trophy, Bent is scoring at a rate of 1 every 2 games and we have Portsmouth this weekend. Easy 3 points ahead :D

After that it's straight sailing. I predict 6th-7th in the league, League Cup winners and UEFA Cup Winners. Is that asking for too much?

lol, has anyone seen that the UEFA Cup's name is being changed to the UEFA Europa League? This has to be a desperate attempt to boost TV ratings.

What would be more effective would be to do what the UEFA Champions League says on the tin and go back to having UEFA Cup places for the teams that finish 2nd to 4th (bring back the Cup Winner's Cup as well).
