Ronaldinho has won the Fifa Player of the Year award, just ahead of Henry with Shevchenko in third. Again Henry has just missed out on the prize which is sad. However no complaints, Ronaldinho is an awesome player.

In other news apparently Liverpool have made a bid for Morientes, who is unhappy because he isn't getting enough first team football.

HAve you read the stats though? Henry has scored more goals in few games, and have a lot more assists.

And looks like Trevor Francis is showing interest in managing us, which may or may not work. It would be nice having a forest forest manager though again

(well, i did read this from the Sun, so they may be inaccurate)

That would be such a weird line up for the prize.

I couldnt imagine Mark venus accepting the award. Most players in the lower divs would probably be happy with the free trip abroad.

And if it is stats, why didnt Henry win it? It probably narrows it down to the final 3, but then i guess its just a vote

I no longer have the knowledge of football that i used to, so putting together a best team is a struggle for me.

However, as a new subject, with the year coming to an end, and the last games being played of 2004, post your personal reflection of your team's year, their highs and lows, and what the future holds..

For me, (forest fan) this has probably been the darkest season for us. After we had a mediocre finish last season, this one has been a complete nightmare.

Money problems have never left us, and the constant need to sell our well groomed youth players has crippled our side and left us in relegation. Along with this, the legend Brian Clough died, which sums up how our season is looking, bleak.

As for the new year, I am confinded to the fact that unless our new management can perform a miracle and pull out some good players, and keep Andy Reid (complete miracle there), we are lookingat Div 1 on the championship next year, where we shall 're-build and prepare to go straight back up'. This was said a few years ago, whe we left the Premiership.

Southampton

Most seasons they are tipped to go down but suprise everyone and finish in mid table or lower half security. This year however, the season has started worse than usual. Already on the 3rd manager of the season there seems to be little stability and no confidence in the squad. The players show no commitment and some players are tipped to be sold in January. The results have been poor, especially against the weaker teams in the premiership, and some results have been thrown away. None of the new signings have done much and along with the massive injury blow to Michael Svennson and Mathew Oakley, the squad lacks depth. This time last year saints were 4th, holding off for a champions league place. This year they are 19th and fighting for thier lives. If they go down I think a lot of the squad will be sold to balance the books, and the team will not recover and eventually go into freefall like Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday have done.

Read further down, this is what you'll get out of it...

Several Italian soccer players — including AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi, Milan captain Paolo Maldini, and Juventus defender Gianluca Zambrotta — were caught in the maelstrom in the Maldives but were unhurt.

I know they may not be harmed, but that'd sure have been a great tragedy for the soccer world if we'd lost those guys...of course, that is amongst the tragic other 60,000 + dead.

Have some consolation in the fact that we can actually still play some nice football. I was at the West Ham game on Boxing Day, and in the second half we had plenty of chances to win the game and looked a pretty good side. (Although we couldn't actually take advantage of the chances :upset:

Yep it would be a miracle of Reid stayed, and Dawson too, but we sure could do with them

Well I have a few team stories:

Arsenal:

Champions of the league and almost went the year unbeaten. Made a new English record of un-beaten matches but then fell short at 50 at Old Trafford, of all places. From January it seemed like a treble was on, but Europe again befalled us at the hands of Chelsea, throwing away a home advantage to lose and wasted our best chance for winning the elite trophy. It went from treble to double to just the Championship as Man Utd beat us in the semi-final of the FA Cup meaning we could not retain it again plus it was the first time we did not make the final for 3 years. Winning the league was the highlight backed by the unbeaten record. Jose Antonio Reyes joined us in January, Robin van Persie the biggest summer signing, and also the youngsters of Fabregas, Clichy, Flamini and Hoyte all pushing if not getting first-team action. It looked like it was going to be a cruise to retain the title as we seemed unbeatable again, until the 50th, which mentally scarred us and have yet to really pick up our form again. Some late scrappy wins against Portsmouth and today at Newcastle ensure that we will still be there in the race of which Chelsea seem to be running away with already. I am very much doubtful that the check-book will be used during the january window as I feel we have it in our squad to be the biggest again in 2005.
Prediction for 2005: Champions again (I have to say that!), but still no form in Europe.

Norwich:

More of a local team they are to me, but winners of the old first division they came into the Premiership looking odds on to go down. They didnt win a match for the first 12 or so games, but with a load of draws sit just inside the drop-zone at New Year. Some real talent with Huckerby, Bently and others makes us on paper look capable of staying up, but wins are essential in the New Year.
Prediction for 2005: Just avoid the drop, but will lose key players in transfers.

Wolves:

2 years ago I supported them with all my heart, but now I am stuck with a busy life and they are too far away from me for me to care about as much. Relegation from the Premiership was bad enough, but now we sit at the wrong end of the table in the Championship, and dreams of a return to the top league seem overturned, in that now the aim is safety for another year.
Prediction for 2005: Mid-table. Thats it.

Cambridge United:

The final part of my essay of my clubs is the team that sits bottom of the football league. Embarrasement. 2-0 up agains Yeovil with little over 30mins to play on bowing day and we still manage to lose. A new director of football was named (Claude LeRoy) in the early parts of the year, with a new manager (Herve Renard) who saved us from the drop last season. This season he sadly hasn't done the trick again, and was sacked 3 weeks ago with Steve Thompson named the new manager on saturday. Wins are needed essentially because Conference football does not sound in any way appealing, but I fear for the worst.
Prediction for 2005: Conference football, bankruptcy and just about anything else that can go wrong.

Thank you for your time, and a Happy New Year to you all.

Having had access to the sports channels recently, and having nothing better to do (spending a lot of time at my Dad's, unfortunately), I'd just like to say how great it is that, for once, the two greatest players in the Premiership are British. I'm talking, of course, about Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

The England national side now has easily the best central midfield in the world, and probably the best central defence, too, with Terry, Ferdinand, and Campbell. There's no excuses if we fail to win Euro 2006 with all of them fit.

Worst ref decision so far in this season.

Referees at the moment are getting handballs all wrong. Even though I am an Arsenal fan, I admitt that Ashley Cole did handball and it should of been a penalty. Again in the Liverpool - Chelsea match, Thiago blatently handballed it, and the ref even put the whistle to his mouth before taking it away, claiming it was 'ball to hand'! There was also another handball incident I saw on Match of The Day on Saturday but I forget which one. And finally today in the Norwich v Liverpool match, Caragher clearly handballed it in his own area. It's these decisions that go wrong and change matches. Liverpool went on to win 2-1, as did Chelsea when they got lucky with a decision and so did Arsenal. This has to be the worst perioud of time I have ever seen for referees because it seems that in every match day, a handball is going un-noticed.

It is all part of the game yes, but recently all the favours have gone towards the bigger clubs. Arsenal and Chelsea both would of dropped points if the handballs were pointed out at Newcastle and Liverpool respectively. Although I agree that it is part of the game, it would make it fairer. They are also talking about penalising players who dive if it is spotted on tv, which is good because there is nothing I hate more than players diving.

What does everyone think about a British team? Do you think it would be a good idea? The England team would probably be better, but it's just hypothetical.Pick your team including 7 subs (must have at least 2 from each country)

Mine would be:

GK: Roy Carroll
LB: Ashley Cole
RB: Gary Neville
CB: Rio Ferdinand
CB: John Terry
LM: Ryan Giggs
RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips
CM: Steven Gerrard
CM: Frank Lampard
ST: Jermaine Defoe
ST: Wayne Rooney

Subs:
GK: Paul Robinson
DF: Aaron Hughes
DF: Sol Campbell
MF: Barry Ferguson
MF: Darren Fletcher
ST: Alan Smith
ST: Craig Bellamy

GK: Paul Robinson
LB: Ashley Cole
RB: Gary Neville
CB: Sol Campbell
CB: John Terry
LM: James McFadden
RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips
CM: Steven Gerrard
CM: Frank Lampard
ST: Michael Owen
ST: James Beattie

Subs:
GK: Nigel Martyn
DF: Ledley King
DF: Rio Ferdinand
MF: Barry Ferguson
MF: Ryan Giggs
ST: Wayne Rooney
ST: Craig Bellamy

I can't be bothered checking if there are two from each nation etc, that's just my quick idea.

I hope Everton can beat Portsmouth tonight, two defeats in a row is terrible form.
At least we will have James Beattie playing soon, and hopefully another new player or two.
I blame the loss of Stubbs and Martyn to why we lost 5-2 to Tottenham, Stubbs is our best defender and Martyn is much better than Wright.

Martyn is much better than Wright.

Whatever happened to Richard Wright? He was being tipped as the 'next England number one' when he was at Ipswich a few years ago, and now he's second choice at Everton.

I can see the same happening to Rob Green in the future.

Beattie is a good player.
And us selling Rooney to Man U is better. Around £20m for an over-rated fag who does nothing a lot of the time, and will turn into the next Paul Gascgoine, but not as talented. Rooney is an overrated pie eater.

Spurs were just robbed of 3 points (coming from a United fan). But to be fair, the match should have been over long before that. We had so many chances to put the game away. Typical of United in a few games this season. But after that incident towards the end, I'm just glad we got a point.

ive just got a bad feeling that 7 points could be too much for us. I agree that chelsea will have a blip in form because everyone is saying they are invincible but everybody said that about us and we still went on a bad run so if it can happen to us it could easily happen to them and i supose there's still a fair to go so never say never eh?

mr snrub
01-05-2005, 01:38 PM
Exactly. But everyone is also mentioning that Man Utd closed down a 12 point gap once from March to win the league, and Arsenal closed a 7 pointer in 1997-98, so in my optimistic view I believe it is still possible. Anyway it is Chelsea's to lose now, not anyone else's to win.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I can't see Chelsea keeping their nerve until the end of the season. They are a great side and have a big lead, but I don't think there is enough Premiership experience in their squad. I'll be impressed if they can keep this form up until May.

I am not a Newcastle fan, but I have noted for a long time what a complete waste of space Bramble is. The only thing I have ever seen him do well was a few awesome passes against West Brom the other day. I don't really know much about Boumsong, but Babayaro is a useful player. Any additions to your defence is good though as it is your are of weakness at the moment.

Yer Bramble can have a few decent moments, he is useless though, very unreliable. Defence is our main weakness at the moment but another thing that gets the team down a lot is injuries, we always seem to be having major injury problems.

I don't know much about our two new signings , but anyone new in defence has gotta be a plus, I noticed our latest load of crap results have all happened whilst Carr has been injured, so im sure things will pick up when he's back. I think people should lay off Bramble a bit, for all the **** things he does, ive seen him save heaps of games for Newcastle. He can slide in on someone from behind and cleanly take the ball like the best. If I were manager he would regulary be on the team sheet. Not all the time though, best to keep on his feet make sure he knows he has to concentrate to get picked.

Souness I hear you ask???
Well, when Bobby was "relieved of his duties" I was pretty pissed/sad, i didnt think there would ever be anyone quite like him at Newcastle, he really loved the club. But when Souness first took over my first impressions were "meh" I went to the first game he was in charge and we won 2-0, we then contionued on a nice unbeaten run and I thought he was brilliant, since then we've gone downhill and im not so sure.
Im giving him till the end of February, give him chance for the players he's signed to settle in, then i'll make my decision.

What does everyone think of the FA Cup? I think it'll be great this year. No Premiership sides paired in the 3rd round. Leaves the more excting ties until later on in the competition. Not that lower division teams don't produce exciting matches, I just think interest will be restored to the FA Cup with a few high profile ties later on in the competition.

That is quite embarrasing for you. But you've got to hand it to them. Also Oldham, who would of thought they would of beaten Man City! Shame about Scunthorpe, started so well and then looked like they could of got it to 2-2, but ran out of ideas and Chelsea took it. Pardon, lol, surely you can't say that Arsenal will beat Newcastle like that, the last three times we've met we've given them a hell of a run, take earlier in the season for example, any other day it was a draw, the gola was a total fluke, yeah, it was at St James's and we had a big home advantage but still. I'm not saying we'll thrash em, but I don't think its fair to write us off that quickly, i'd say draw or another sneaky win by Arsenal.

Newcastle are always up for it, usually in the first 20 minutes what we need to do is keep that attacking pace all the way through the match and not just sit back on one goal! esspecially when playing teams like Arsenal you need to have a couple of Goals under your belt to confirm that the game is over! well not over, but definately more out of reach than with just 1-0!

Can't see Newcastle winning it. If I had to pick anyone I would say Chelsea. They have amazing depth in their squad, so even if Mourinho picks a weakened team, they will still beat most teams in England. I'm hoping United can win it again. Many United fans don't see it as a major trophy but I still do and I hate to see it when Ferguson puts out under-strength teams in it.

Anyone taking part in football aid this year? just got an e-mail sayingb bidding has started for places. I got to play at pittodrie, home of Aberdeen FC, in 2003 which was kinda cool. I had Jim Bett as my captain which was weird playing with a player of his class. Just getting told you made a good pass by him was magic. Anyway which clubs ground would you like to play at?

Yeah I know, but I mean it has to happen this year for Shearer, he's supported the club since a kid, and it would be a dream come true for him to captain them to silverware. If you watch a game you'll see that no one puts in as much effort as Big Al, he's always back clearing the ball from corners and despite his age can get back up the pitch.

Not that other players don't try, I've seen Bellamy run himself stupid chasing the ball, and to no avail.

I remeber when we played you in the FA Cup last season, you were unlucky to lose 3-0 at home in your first FA Cup game of the season (and last). But I have to say that win goave us a lot of confidence. You played well but we we're that bit better. Yeah your right, to be fair Savage is a good player, I still think he's a bit of a dick but if he can play football who am i to judge. He's still a better player than most people.
As for Dyer I agree again, he is overpaid and overrated. It really pissed me off when he refused to play on the right. I'd give everything I have to play just 5 minutes for Newcastle United in any position going.

When he first signed for us all those years ago I thought he was class, rally fat and skillfull. Unfortunatly though as his wage went up his efoort went down. To be fair he's started trying quite a bit recently, as has Robert, but I reckon its because its transfer window time, and they know that if they don't try, they'll be sold off with a bad reputation.

Real can't afford to wait 'til the summer, they need a defensive minded midfield player or they might not even make it into a champions league spot in la liga. Graveson has been the reason Everton have been successful this season (that and nigel martyn) and he's been consistently good for Denmark over the last few years.

Gravesen is the type of player Real Madrid have been missing. Ever since Makelele left there's been a gap between their defence and attack. Although, I don't see why they went for Gravesen. Sure, he's a good player, but surely Real Madrid can attract players of a higher standard to fill that gap.

Italy has produced 2 different winners of the Champions League over the past ten years (one winning it twice). Germany has produced 2 different winners. A Spanish team has won it 3 times. The Premiership has produced ONE finalist in nearly 20 years.

I agree that the Premiership is probably the most exciting league in terms of football, but it is by no means the strongest league.

premiership - chelsea. Everybody knows that they are going all the way know and theres no way you can slip up ten points. I think chelsea will probably win the carling cup aswell.

FA cup - Man U. I think its going to be groundhog day again for united becuase there not going to win the premiership and i also think AC milan will knock them out of the champions league. So they might have to settle for the FA cup again.

Champions league - Arsenal. Providing they dont draw each other in the earlier stages im going for a Arsenal V Barcelona final. Wenger and everyone in the arsenal camp knows that the premiership title is surely done and dusted know with chelsea 10 pints clear so i think they will really go for it in the champions leaugue. Europe has provided some harsh times for arsenal but its only big trophy that they havent won and in my thoughts its only a matter of time before they do. They want it badly and if they put their heads together this could be their year.

uefa cup - i really havent been following this very well so dont know. I hope newcastle win it though.

3 to go down - norwich and west brom will definately go down. The other relagation place i gonna be between southampton and palace. Knowing what palace are like i bet they will stay up on goal difference on the last game of the season.

Man, United played crap yesterday. Look at the players we had out there - first team players and they couldn't kill off the game at all until the very end!

Props to Exeter, they definitely didn't deserve the thrashing that many predicted, but I thought it was gonna happen, had all the chances Ron and Roon missed in the second half been converted. It went over the bar how many times? Rooney is still failing to justify the £30m they spent on him.

The only time I think we deserved to score was when the ball was going towards an open goal, but it bounced into mud which stopped it dead, and the keeper pounced on it! That's what you get playing on a non-League pitch, I guess.

It makes you wonder how we're going to beat Chelsea and AC Milan when a near-full team can't fully see of a Conference side.

I'm on the balcony in the Milburn Stand, where the hell's the Balcony? My dad ordered them and I asked him to try and get Milburn Level 7, near the half way line, I'm right on the half way line and right at the front of level 7 by the looks of it, but I don't know. I've been to quite a few games recently but I havn't come across "the balcony" before

Saints beat Liverpool :D :D :D :D

Prutton was fantastic and so was Higginbotham, Redknapp and Crouch. If Saints play like that every week theres no way they will go down.

Well done to Southampton, what was the final score, last I heard was 2-0

Yeah, it finished 2-0 to Southampton. Great result for them and again shows Liverpool up for the waste of space that they are.

United won again. 3-1 against Villa. Looked pretty dodgy for a while after Barry equalised but finished them off comfortably.

Unfortunately, Chelsea won again. Doesn't look like they're gonna be stopped :upset:

Also, great comeback by Norwich :thumb:

Well done The Saints and Norwich - told you they have what it takes to stay up.

Come on Newcastle, if we beat Arsenal tomoroow then we will get into the top half and be 5 points of Middlesborough and Liverpool.

Yeah, was a good win for the saints, but was kind of ruined by Palace winning and Norwich remarkably getting a draw.

Norwich and Palace did really well, I hope Newcastle get a result tomorrow or we're well and truly sunk. The gap between us and 5th/4th place isn't getting smaller

typical, saints have a chance to pull away and all the relegation battlers get a result

The Manchester U - Arsenal game on the 1st should be pretty good, the teams are both pretty close.

I know, it's crazy. The weekend West Brom win, so do Southhampton and Crystal Palace, and Norwich get an awesome draw. So unfair :p

I think West Brom have Crystal Palace, Norwich and Southhampton all next Month. I think.

The relegation battle seems to be really interesting this year. I think all the teams will push each other all the way.

Yeh, palace squeezed their way out with that 3-0 win, I have to say I'm surprised Southampton are down there.

Newcastle can go 9th if they beat Arsenal today, hmm, not to sure we can manage it at Highbury though

GOD, I'm so angry. Once again Newcastle have a great chance to get back into Champs league/UEFA cup positions and we lose.
We have a great run of games soon though.

Won't be the same next time around :D

If you go to it, look at the away section and the saints fans. If you see a small, angry ginger person it's probably me :p
