Man U just generally seem to struggle when they come up against:

a) one of Fergie's ex-players (Wigan!)
b) a manager who Fergie is quite friendly with (West Ham!)

Not that this explains why Boro have continued to surprise you since McLaren left. I genuinely do think that there's this attitude that a lot of Boro players have, where they think they're better than they actually are, so they go out against Derby and Fulham as if they have nothing to prove, but they then play out of their skins against Arsenal and Man U as if that makes the other sub-par performances okay.

The Man City thing I don't get. Are Eriksson and Ferguson friends?

mph4ever
04-30-2008, 10:10 AM
i think you might be on to something. boro do have a team of players that would be/have been successful elsewhere. they do seem to have an attitude problem. they might just be a team of nearly men and that hangs over them except when they have to prove themselves against the better teams. perhaps southgate is not the right manager to get the best out of them. i always worry when we play them

mph4ever
04-30-2008, 10:30 AM
Barcelona really are a shade of the team they were a couple of years ago. That's part of the reason why Manchester United are a better team at the moment, at least at the back anyway.

Manchester United's defensive displays earned them thier clean sheets and they deserved to go to the final, but in light of all the talk about how United were meant to rip the weak Barcelona defence to shreds the negative performances struck me as dissapointing.

i don't understand how a team that has abidal, puyol, zambrotta and milito can be expected to be ripped apart by anyone.

perhaps their cycle is at an end and they need to refresh themselves. buying henry was stupid, they should have dumped ronaldihno at the same time. too many great players, almost galacticos at this stage, wrong club though.

Frankie
04-30-2008, 11:24 AM
It really is frustrating being a boro fan due to our attitudes playing the lesser teams.

Still I have faith that this is the probably the best team we've assembled for a good 3 or 4 seasons. If we can get a decent right winger (O'Neill isn't one) then we might be able to push into the first half of the table.

and lol at randy supposedly not knowing anything about football but it's tribalism

From a Man Utd point of view, I want Liverpool to go through, we always play better than them recently, I think they'd be nervous about playing us tbh.

If Chelsea make it (and they're favourites), then it could be a tight final, Chelsea have a small psycological advantage over us from last weekend, but on our day we can beat them.

Whoever makes it, I just hope the final is a free flowing attacking game of football.

RandyfromPennywise
04-30-2008, 11:56 AM
you said

they are not a shade, they were up against a much better team Ah, Barcelona aren't a shade of what they were two seasons ago? I'm sorry, but if you think that they are anywhere near as good as they were when Ronaldinho inspired them to a La Liga/Champions League double in 2005-2006, then you do not watch any Spanish football, and clearly don't watch Barcelona, except when they play against your team. They were up against a quality side, that's true. This is also true: Barcelona are 14 points behind Real in La Liga and have gained 7 points from their last 9 league games. They haven't scored a single goal in their last four matches. If that's not a shade of a Champions League-winning side, I don't know what is.

so essentially you are saying that manu went through because barca were shi'te. i can't read it any other way.
No I am not saying Manchester went through only because Barcelona were shyte. I am saying that Barcelona being shyte was a major factor in the tie. Barcelona absolutely dominated possession, and did nothing with it. However good you think United are, an on form Barcelona would've tested van der Sar a lot more than that XI out there last night and last week. But, like I said, the fact that Barcelona were average takes nothing away from the fact that United went out and did the business. Is this clear?

well simply from your inability to notice that the manu tactics were excellent and that is the only reason barca looked like shi'te I think you've just killed any credibility your football knowledge had. Manchester's tactics were the only reason Barcelona looked like shyte? They've been making themselves look shyte for several months now. But we are all to assume that United's tactics are the only reason they looked average in this tie? Come on.

means that you can really only see your own team and can't appreciate the virtues of others. I am actually a football fan first and foremost.

are you a chelsea fan by any chance?
I am, as I am sure you were already aware.

Oh and by the way, the penalty against Carrick is a clear-cut penalty any day of the week in any game anywhere in the world. Just like Ballack's against Liverpool, which also should have been a penalty, to Liverpool.

And Frankie, thanks mate.

Barca are going through an absolutely abysmall patch, i'm pretty sure they havn't scored in 5 games now or something!? Sounds ridiculous when they have players like Henry, Eto'o, Iniesta, Messi, Xavi, Bojan etc.

I'm going for a Chelsea win tonight, thought I would probably rather play Liverpool in the final as we have a much better record against them. Then again, you can see Liverpool breaking the duck at some point and there is no situation more apt than the Champions League Final.

Chelsea have bossed it. Our midfield has been quite brilliant, Maka has been exceptional, particularly his positional play, and Lamps and Bally look lively. Could've been 2-0, Drogba's first effort that was a cross/shot (i.e. not one or the other), if he played that straight across, Joe would've had a tap in. Looking good. Need another one though, Scouse are capable of nicking one, although it looked unlikely in the first 45. Gerrard could do something.

How was Gerrard when he went over to the bench to get the ball, and Grant goes flying. Reminded me of Muscat versus Kosmina, although Gerrard had no malice, situation was just funny.

Yeah I also wanted to say about Liverpool's shape, they were keeping their shape amazingly well in the first 20, you could see it on the pitch, it was like it is on paper, they were holding their shape very, very well. However that didn't really allow Gerrard much freedom.

I have not been as tense/nervous/a complete and utter wreck since the World Cup qualifier in '05 in Sydney. My heart was going insane. Why did Babbel have to go and do that! Oh just amazing, we finally beat the scum, unbelievable. We're all going on a Russian holiday, Russian holiday. I hear Moscow's nice this time of year.

Bab's goal was sensational, but Petr probably should've done better. Our penalty was certainly a pen, and Hyypia dived to try to get a pen which was pretty poor. Lampard was pretty awesome considering everything.

What a game.

I cannot believe that people say Andy Gray is biased against Liverpool. He, Hyypia and possibly Benitez are the only people on the face of the planet who thought that was a penalty at the beginning of the second half of extra time.

i thought the game was rubbish. essien is probably the only class act in blue. stupid goals, worse refereeing. poxy weather, poxy pitch. it really has destroyed the champs league that chelsea have gotten through, but i do suppose that money can buy success in football these days. liverpool would have been much more worthy adversaries. and it would have been better for football as a whole. chelsea don't belong in the elite and never will, no mattter how hard they try. they might even win it, but like i said previously, its a sad state of affairs when teams like chelsea are winning the champs league, really sad. i feel so much for the scousers that they missed the chance, the same as we did last year when milan beat us. it would have great in athens, it would have been great in moscow, now its just shyte.

and what was grant doing kneeling on the pitch. i would be embarrased to be a chelsea fan watching such overpaid idiots act like superstars. i guess roman will have him in the room for the next three weeks telling him what to do in every eventuality so it looks like he is managing the team :naughty::naughty::naughty:

Right now, as a Liverpool fan, we're not as good as Chelsea.

Just look at the league, look at the football we've been playing, look at the strength in depth. I still prefer watching Liverpool play, but there is no doubting Chelsea have been the better team this season. Next season, who knows. Yeah one thing I would say about Chelsea is that for a team of their resources they should be playing better football than they do. I see a lot of teams that come to Home Park (and indeed Argyle themselves) play long balls and a direct game like Chelsea and I just think that a team challenging for the title should do a little better. Not that it hasn't worked for them.

Well you might be surprised to know that our club has a lot of history. Yes, we have not been as successful as the Uniteds and Arsenals of the world, but we have more than 100 years of proud history in SW6 and we are an important club in England, and we have been for most of those 102 years.

Drogba would have got at least 6 more goals this season if he hadn't gone over so much. He has the power to stand his ground and create chances under pressure, and he doesn't, which baffles me. Unless he's just scared of getting injured, which is entirely possible.

Yeah look I have to agree, Xabi Alonso is a brilliant passer of the round ball, he really is class. He does professional fouls all the time which really makes him scum. He and Mascherno do it all the time.

It's strange about Drogba, but when you really look at it, he's actually not a 'diver'. He accentuates contact, but he doesn't 'dive' per say. He definitely goes down easily, but not without contact. He only goes down easily if there is contact. I'm not saying he's not a diver - he is - but he doesn't try to win fouls when there is not contact; he only tries to accentuate contact. Interesting difference.

Gazza Barry? Would be a valuable addition, seeing as they're letting Alonso go in the summer. Barry's a good passer, and a good anchor midfielder, would allow Gerrard to roam upfield more and trouble defences. What do you reckon?

We need a right winger too, dunno who they've got their eye on though. Bentley would be PERFECT, but I can't see Blackburn letting him go just yet.

Why is Alonso leaving? He's inconsistent, but I'd take him over Gareth Barry any day.

Is Alonso leaving for sure? I didn't know that if so. I don't mind him leaving so much, he has been very inconsistent of late. Barry, Gerrard, and Mascherano revolving around the centre would be killer. I think it'd be nice to have a left-footed centre mid, there aren't many of them around.

A right wing would be good too, playing Kuyt out there doesn't work all that well. I can't see Bentley coming, Pennant is pretty good yet also inconsistent.

Kuyt?? I don't want Kuyt to go, I think he's been good for us. He doesn't stop running at all, and he wins balls that just seem impossible to win. Sure, he doesn't score too much, but I think he plays really well with Gerrard and Torres.

Also, I don't know if Berba would be worth bringing, he's very similar to Torres, but I guess a bit more creative.

RandyfromPennywise
05-05-2008, 09:33 AM
Yeah to be fair Kuyt has changed and adapted his game remarkably since coming over from Holland. There he was way more prolific and more of a striker - now he's very versatile under Benitez and has one of the best work-rates of anyone in the league. I think Liverpool would be foolish to let him go, at the least he's a very useful player to have in your squad.

Berbatov and Torres would be a magic combination, up there with any other combo in the league, if not Europe. Seriously they'd be magic together.

Here's a question: Drogba at his best or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at his best?

Jimmy at his best - ripped **** up in Portugal for a season (Boavista) before moving to Leeds where he continued to rip **** us for Leeds for two seasons, then he went to Spain and was top scorer with 32 goals for Atletico Madrid, then he came to Chelsea and was top scorer at the club three times, and his first two seasons were sensational.

Drogba at his best - a pretty good season for Guingamp, getting a goal every other game, then a prolific season at Marseille, scoring 30 goals, then off to England and two average seasons before one brilliant season.

It's a pretty tough question I reckon. I mean the obvious answer is to go for Drogba because he's at his best right now, just scored two in a ECL semi final, but Jimmy was hot **** there for quite a number of seasons. Not sure on my verdict. I prefer Hasselbaink as a player, what a character. Those stares he used to give, what a legend. Best goal celebration when he just stood there and looks to the side. But Drogba has his qualities too. What do you lot reckon?

Ok I'm going for Jimmy.

He actually played 154 games and scored 14 goals, the 94 and 8 figures are for La Liga only. Even still... Reminds me of Winston Bogarde who, if the figures are to be believed, earned at least £8m during his four seasons at Chelsea. Not saying that McManaman and Bogarde's situation are anything alike, just that the huge sums reminded me of Bogarde. To be honest he was always ridiculed, but Chelsea were the idiots who offered him £40k a week!!!

Kind of gets ludicrous when the sums are like that. John Terry earns £135,000 per week. That's his weekly wage from Chelsea. So he can bank on £7m a year before tax. That's all before he even talks to Adidas, the FA, Umbro, and whoever else. Crazy sums.

Liverpool have Carra, Agger, and Skrtel, and to a lesser extent, Hyypia. Why buy another?.
Because he's better than any of those players.

Agger is the best defender at the club by some measure, but he's going to be vulnerable to injury next season.

Kewell is finished though, he'll never be back. Not in England at least, maybe in the A-League in a year or two.

Well, if his injuries keep knocking him down, then yeah, he's over. I'm hoping he can still go on in Italy or Spain, or anywhere in Europe.

Just read that Gattuso is on his way to Bayern Munich, and that the deal is supposedly done already.

It's well known that most of Kewell's injuries are sustained walking the streets of Liverpool.

kewell is a class act. he married a bird from emerdale farm and when his big chance came for a move away from the north she wouldn't go because of her "acting" career. hes been kicking up dust ever since, not too sure anyone would be able to revive his career

It's even more ridiculous that Crouch only has one more year left on his contract. Clubs wont pay £15m - what's to stop them waiting another year and getting him on a free?

Liverpool are fine for centre backs. We need a left back and a right winger most.

Benayoun ?

Or do you not rate him, cos I certainly do

Wouldnt mind seeing him at the boro next season or even Andrei Arshavin. Looks unlikely but whatever

I reckon since Mourinho wants to be Portuguese national coach he will wait until the end of Euro 2008 and see if Scolari goes to Man City.

Nervous about today, don't know why, on paper it looks like a win for United, today of all days I wish it was won on paper.

Though I have faith in the boys to do it, I can't see us conceding, so I think it's down to getting the goals, and with Cristiano '40 goals' Ronaldo I think we can do it.
