Hah, haven't heard that one. My dad explained to me why everyone from Boro hates Newcastle....basically back in the '50s and '60s when there was major issues with employment in the North, Newcastle declared 100% employment and then hired a load of buses to take all their unemployed people into Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and a few other places surrounding them, and get jobs there instead. It really ****ed up a lot of people who lived outside of Newcastle - people lost their houses and had children die of easily treatable diseases and all that lovely stuff. In extreme cases, anyway. Regardless of that it's still an incredibly underhand thing to do.

I left Boro when I was about 3 months old anyway. I reserve my hatred for people from Watford, Corby, and Italy now. :p

Holy ****, we actually got Trapattoni

Accepting a job to spend more time with your family is not always the greatest endorsement, but with Giovanni Trapattoni being unveiled as the new manager of the Republic of Ireland yesterday it undoubtedly amounted to an astonishing coup.

In employing the 68-year-old on a two-year contract the Irish have, to some extent, trumped England's appointment of Fabio Capello. Trapattoni, with seven Serie A titles, plus titles in Germany and Portugal, the European Cup, three Uefa Cups and a Cup Winners' Cup triumph, is even more decorated than his highly-feted compatriot. Importantly he also boasts four years in charge of the Italian national team, from 2000 to 2004, leading them to a World Cup and European Championships.

I wouldn't be surprised if Milan terminated Ronaldo's contract, I'm pretty sure this means that at the end of the this season Ronaldo will have had made 18 appearances in as many months with the club. They need to buy a striker or two in summer to play with Pato.

edit: oh yeah, the ROI did well to land Trapattoni, the man's CV is fantastic

Dave de Sylvia
02-14-2008, 07:52 PM
Maybe he wanted to make it a challenge, and that's why he was the most fun manager ever!

Or maybe not.

I feel sorry for Stan. He seems like a lovely guy and he was a great servant for the national side as a player, but he just wasn't suited for the job. He made some really strange tactical decisions, and the team couldn't even execute basic things like throw-ins and keeping possession, things they accomplish easily at club level.

Luckily, Irish football never ceases to be boring. The only reason we can afford Trappatoni is because a billionaire businessman/con artist is bankrolling half his wages. Looks like Roy Keane's statement earlier this week that the FAI will always try to do things "on the cheap" has been justified.

3-0 at half time, apparently only one team turned up today B)

Closing Arsenal down all over the place, not giving them a chance to play their passing game.

Fletcher and Anderson and Rooney are playing amazing.

Dave de Sylvia
02-16-2008, 02:08 PM
Arsenal were awful today. Two eyes on the Champions League and no real desire to play, even when it became clear they were about to be humiliated.

I was really impressed by Nani. My favourite moment being when he was juggling the ball on his head, was kicked 3 times by a defender (Huyt or Traore, can't remember which) and finally got hacked by Flamini. And Flamini starts shouting at him as he runs past, as if being the most skillful player on the pitch is something to be ashamed of.

Spiney_Norman
02-16-2008, 02:53 PM
Arsenal were poor today, just didn't look interested, but Utd's game plan was great - close them down everywhere. Nani was lucky he got out of the way of Flamini's challenge: on the replay Flamini comes flying in, could have been very nasty.
Oh, and the Liverpool result is hilarious - Benitez has completely lost it this season

In other news, the mighty Oxford made it two wins in two :D

I'm a Utd.fan and I'll agree on this one.

When these two teams play its like waiting for something amazing to happen, that you know will never happen. Its like waiting on the second coming of Christ.

But I guess they're both trying to maintain control, as they know they're fairly well matched and a single wrong strong advance could give up the ball and leave them lost in a situation, where they could have recovered had it been another team.

Liverpool benefitted from poor refereeing tonight, although the only big incorrect desicion that didn't go their was a pretty blatant handball and penalty. I am tempted to say Liverpool deserved their win but life was made easier for them and Inter's defending was brilliant for the most part. Liverpool are probably favourites now but I stil fully expect Internazionale to win in the San Siro. Can see it going to extra time myself.

As for Chelsea, do they choose to make life more difficult than it needs to be for themselves? They obviously have the personnel to beat Olympiakos quite comfortably but now thy'll probably have to be more defensive than they wished at home to avoid conceding an away goal.

I expect tomorrow's ties to be more entertaining than tonight's. No idea who'll go through out of AC and Arsenal, expect Man U to draw tomorrow but go through in the end.

Anyone as excited by tonights games as I am? I love watching my club in the Champions League.

Only thing i'm gutted about is Giggs and Scholes starting. Granted they've done amazing for Man Utd over the years. But Anderson and Nani are the on form players (Giggs hasnt been on form at all this season to be honest, and shouldn't be a starter in my opinion anymore, last 30 mins or something, he's never been a champs league player, he doesn't do well in the comp, even when we won it he wasn't as amazing as he used to be in the league.
Plus he never tracks back, or tackles back, when he loses the ball he stands there with his arms raised as if the world's done him a major wrong or something. Nani gets back, he was in his own half when he dazzled Arsenal with the flicks etc to take away any pressure).

I refuse to accept all the "Experience" bollocks.

What ever happened to "If you're good enough, you're old enough"?

I think we'll win really, and I love Giggs n Scholes to bits, but Anderson + Nani are entertaining and quality, they deserve their chance, on current form they should be first choice.

Should be a good game, really looking forward to it.

EDIT: Don't I feel like a prick now, I assumed Since Scholes n Giggs were in, Anderson + Nani were out.

But Anderson is starting. So disregard anything I said about leaving him out.

Nani is on the bench though when I still say he shouldn't be.

Arsenal pretty much dominated the match, should have had a few goals. AC Milan were ridiculously off the ball tonight, particularly due to Kaka being tagged by Flamini. Even with Pirlo though, all his passes were bad.

I wonder how Milan are going to deal with Arsenal's containment of Kaka in a few weeks time. He's pretty much the central guy there, so you stop him and you stop Milan's offense. Pirlo having a bad game didn't help. Plus, with only a few strikers, there's not much to feed to.

1256: Eduardo is given oxygen as he is stretchered from the pitch after eight minutes of treatment. Nicolas Bendtner replaces him. We have not been allowed to see a replay of the incident - which probably tells you horrific it was.

1254: Thankfully, you rarely witness scenes like these. The Arsenal team are looking around in absolute horror at the fate of Eduardo, who is being attended to by several medics.

1251: RED CARD Birmingham
Martin Taylor gets a straight red after a challenge on Eduardo. Cesc Fabregas urgently tells the physio to attend to Eduardo, with the rest of his team-mates looking shocked. The striker is badly injured - looks like it could be a broken leg.

Holy **** :|

I hate this sort of thing. It's like when Buust got his leg destroyed and I think it was Beckham who ran like hell to get the stretcher or something...don't remember specifics.

I remember Alan Smith for Man U who broke his leg from blocking a Riise shot, how pale he was etc...I hate seeing this sort of injury..hope Eduardo is ok

Yeah I didnt catch it either, going by BBC updates here.

It may of not been a red, who knows, I mean Eduardo probably has a broken leg but those sort of injurys don't always come from exceptionally reckless challenges. I'll have to see a replay to decide if I think it was a red or not.

Wonder if the seriousness of the injury helped the ref make his decision. As I said until I see the replay I don't know, unless anyone who saw it can clear it up?

Erm it definately was a late challenge, but as far as I can tell he went in one footed and it didn't look malicious or intentional...I think the injury pursuaded the ref more than anything, I would of thought that'd be a yellow card otherwise.

Arsene Wenger is a joke. Saying Taylor should never play again for that challenge, It wasn't malicious, intentful or deliberate,1 footed tackle, which you see countless times every weekend from various players, and they get yellow cards rightly for it.

One tackle goes horrifically wrong and he's calling for a ban for life? What a joke.

If the roles were reversed he'd be saying it was an accidental challenge and these things regretably happen in football.

Yeah it's a really shitty thing to say. Unfortunately Taylor's probably going to be vilified for it anyway even though you see worse tackles most weeks so it's just needless from Wenger.

But jesus christ, a norwegian paper has pictures of the tackle and it really is horrific, it looks like his ankle's basically snapped off. I'd honestly be surprised to see him playing again.

Great win for Spurs, considering their entry to Europe via the league table is all but impossible. Nah course not, no-one deserves it.

I think it was more of a question as to how Arsene Wenger manages to miss anything that his team do but suddenly has 20/20 vision if his player is on the recieving end..

Oh did I say 20/20? judging by his original reaction to taylors challenge, it's probably more 5/5 with a tint of Bias.

Sure he retracted it, fair play to him, but he needs to stop seeing selective instances, especially one as plain as that, Eduardo 2 foots Nani, Gallas kicks Nani, Wenger see's nothing at all.

Not really a fair comparison as Taylors challenge should of resulted in at most a yellow card.

But if Ali gets banned, shouldn't the other guy too? I mean as I understand it Ali was responding to being flicked or something silly on the nose? As the rules state there should be no approach by a player to make physical contact with an opposing players face or whatever, if Ali can get banned for a tiny slap, the other guy should as well for a flick or whatever he did.

Of course it's a silly rule, but minimum contact gets a red, hell if you miss and the ref see's it can be given as intent and sent.

Hm interesting, just looked up sendings off for the top 4, they stand as follows:

Man Utd - 1
Arsenal - 4
Chelsea - 6
Liverpool - 1

Of course that's just for this season in all competitions.

I don't really think it's down to ref bias to the bigger teams, I mean I haven't exactly seen any challenges warrenting a red card from United all season, can't talk about the others haven't seen all of their games.

I'll compair them with midtable sides:

Portsmouth - 1
Man City - 3
Blackburn - 5
West Ham - 1

Seems pretty fair to me, infact top teams have had 2 more players sent off this season.

Bottom 4:

Birmingham - 1
Reading - 5
Fulham - 7
Derby - 2

That's 3 more than the top sides.

Overall I think it's fair to say the top teams aren't recieving special treatment, they're getting around the same number of sendings off as the rest of the prem.

Source: BBC Sport

I truly had nothing better to do than find those facts and post them. I don't even think you were insinuating top teams get better treatment, I just did this anyway.

I know it can all fall apart very very quickly in football, but looking at the fixtures, I'm starting to believe Man U can make another push at the treble this year. I mean, if we beat Fulham, and Arsenal lose/draw we're top or behind by one (even if Arsenal don't, we can still pull that lead back, as we've shown time and time again).

We beat Lyon midweek, we're in the quarters of the Champs League, and we beat Pompey next weekend, and we're in the Semi of the FA Cup.

I know it's really early but 4 Champs league games (including Lyon), 3 FA Cup Games (including pompey and 11 Prem League games.

That's all that's left (assuming we make it to the finals) it's not impossible to think we have the quality to win most of those games.

I'm probably working my way up to a massive fall (aka losing midweek and next weekend) but It's exciting to think we could do it again realistically.

going well so far, Arsenal losing, United winning, I can see Arsenal picking up a point, which would mean they're 1 point clear. I can deal with that.

They can't keep a lead, sure they play well, but this would be the second 6 point lead they've thrown away, you can't afford to do that when going for the title. They capitalised on uniteds failings, then threw the advantage away.

Also I hate how much the sky sports guys are defending Lampard...ok sure, it may of been the softest push ever, but if Alliadiere (i think) can get sent for gently slapping mascherano AFTER mascherano flicked him or something silly, then they have to accept it.

Sure I dont agree that they are sending off offences, but as it stands, deliberate attempts to push/shove/hit are sendings off in the current game, whether you fully connect, touch barely, or even miss at all (judged as intent).

Still not confident on who I think will win the league but now that Arsenal are getting the results that their form for the past two months reflects I'd start to fancy Man Utd.

I'd also be annoyed if I were Chelsea fan, does it really take losing a cup final to get your players motivated to make it up for the fans? Cos it sounds like it was the best they've played this year.

Also starting to worry about Newcastle. That's what, 5 losses and 2 draws since Keegan took over? Apart from Reading, Derby and possibly Fulham they have to be bottom of the form table.

And Plymouth lose. Oh well it was West Brom away, wasn't expecting too much. 5 consecutive wins would've been nice.

I love Boa Morte, he starts so much **** and gets away with it

@ Splat: don't forget that Tuncay was almost never used as a forward until he came to Boro. Naturally he's a left winger, which makes me wonder whether he was signed in anticipation of Downing swanning off to Spurs.

idk I saw the games were he played right wing and he looks far more comfortable upfront. Regardless I say we atleast try playing 4-3-3 for a bit at the end of the season (if we still aint completly safe that is) with a forward line of alves, ali and tunc.

So what does everyone think about Lampard's successful appeal?

Correct desicion in my view, but it is obviously inconsistent by the FA. I reckon its down to a combination of the criticism they've had about the Alliadiere desicion, and unfortunately, because Chelsea are one of the big boys.

Also, AC, Barca, Man Utd and Sevilla to progress to the quarter finals tonight.

And Argyle to beat the basement boys.

Spiney_Norman

Ugh, Lampard got off? This is just after Alliadiere got an extra match ban for appealling, so it's a complete joke

I reckon it's because Aliadiere 'struck' Mascherano's face, and everyone knows no matter how petty it is, that usually gets a red card. That, and of course everyone including the FA hates the smogs.

The FA are about as consistent as Porridge.

Echleon
03-04-2008, 10:56 AM
In all honesty, whatever choice the FA made, they were going to get criticized.

If they extended the ban like the Alliadiere incident, they would have been criticized for being too harsh
If they turned down the appeal and didn't extend, they would have been criticized for inconsistency.
If they relieved Lampard of his ban, they would get accused of favoring the big clubs.

It's a no win situation.

Utd, Sevilla, Arsenal and Barca to go through tonight imho.

In all honesty, whatever choice the FA made, they were going to get criticized.
And rightly so. It's a problem entirely of their own making. If they'd apply rules equally instead of one for English players and one for foreigners, things like this wouldn't happen. Lampard's was a nothing push, but it's clearly stated in the rules and he should sit out his punishment like anyone else. And if they think this is going to stop Avram Grant from complaining about Chelsea being victimised, then they're in for a big shock.

"Yes, well, 95th minute - normal seven minutes of injury time at Arsenal."

Good to see the English teams getting through. Hopefully all four will be in the QF.

It was a great strike, but the attempt to save it by the keeper was so so poor. Although not as poor at he was for the first goal. Great to see him come through it though and become the hero in the shootout.

Good win for the Gunners. Bit gutted about Sevilla but oh well.

I'm not too pleased about Lampard's appeal. He clearly kicks out and studs Boa Morte then pushes him down. Thats 2 yellow card offences. Then Aliadiere gets 4 matches! Its pretty unfair, lower teams aren't treated as fairly. Oh well, I've probs pissed off the Chelsea fans :smash:

Having said that, Makelele's challenge on Foubert was far worse, that should've been straight red.

So I see Lita's gone on loan to Charlton. Looks like he'll be on his way out in the summer since it's clear him and Coppell hate each other. So that leaves a strike force of Kitson, Shane "Super-Sub" Long and Doyle who I believe has yet to score with his feet this season. Marvellous.

Dave de Sylvia
03-05-2008, 07:03 PM
In Doyle's defence, Coppell's ludicrous decision to play him on the wing despite his complete lack of aptitude has contributed.

03-05-2008, 07:18 PM
True. It also doesn't help having no decent right winger though. Oster's been crap since he's come back and I haven't really seen enough of Kebe due largely to Coppell's reluctance to give any of our signings (bar Matejovsky) a decent chance for about 6 months after they arrive. Hopfully Little will be back at some point.

Everton are good but I think that people have put a bit too much belief in their good season. I remember when everyone thought they would beat Chelsea in the CC semi they got that wrong.
