haha Keegan's time at City was hilarious. It seemed like every match finished 3-0 or 3-3 or 4-3.
Yer, that seems to be his way. I think we need to bring in someone to help him really sure up our defence.

Champions League was a fluke. Milan fell to sleep in the 2nd half and if it weren't for Liverpool's shocking first half performance (which everyone seems to forget about) Rafa would've never told Liverpool to forward as much as they did (case in point, he played 4-5-1 against Wigan at Anfield). Also, any other day Shevchenko would've kept his wits about him and scored that rebound instead of blasting it at about as good a height as he could've from Dudek's point of view.To a degree I certainly agree with you; Liverpool certainty were not, by a long shot, anywhere near the best team in Europe that season and Milan should have settled matters after the first half.
Congrats to Havant & Waterlooville; you've got the game of your lives ahead of you!

It really was terrible up until Man City scored, incidentally against the run of play. Petrov was the only person worth watching and he seemed pretty pissed off with the fact that it was just Vassell up front on his own.
For West Ham there were a few Boa Morte dives that were quite entertaining but yeah, quite awful.
It killed 2 hours though I suppose.

apparently he can play right across the back 4. Probably a good signign for Chelsea because right-back has been a problem area for while now.

Bit gutted about that. I was hoping Reading were going to get him and he seemed quite keen because he lives nearby and apparently didn't really want to move up north.
Yer, at first I was kind of gutted when I heard Diarra had signed for Portsmouth. I thought we had a chance of getting him, he sounds like a twat though, so i'm not too bothered.

He's OK going forward but he is one of a (increasing) number of full-backs who are incapable of defending. Also, if he's injured who do Chelsea play? (Don't say Ferraira because he's rubbish)

Though I think he is a great player and was very loyal to Pompey whilst he was there, Taylor can be inconsistent and, as previously mentioned, Muntari usurped his position and Kranjcar has seriously come on. Scores some amazing goals once in a while.

Robbo is normally really unfunny. Maybe I just don't 'get' him.
I'm, not sure about Matt Taylor. He seems OK but he gets more praise than he should because he scores the occasional wonder goal. This happens to too many players tbh. Like Nolan against Blackburn, one good goal negates a series of crappy games?
As for SWP and Defoe, I could understand Defoe because he's just nto going to break up the Berbatov Keane partnership but regarding SWP. He obviously enjoyed his time at Man City under Keegan but SWP has featured fairly regularly for Chelsea this season and sounds like he's been their best player for the last couple of matches (certainly was against Everton, didn't see the Spurs game).

Yep and that's exactly why I don't understand newcastle fans calling for managers to get sacked, there's one constant thing over the last few managers and that's the squad, you can only work with what you have, and the managers aren't even getting enough time to improve the squad so every manager is getting stuck with the same players, who prove time and time again they aren't anywhere near as good as the fans like to think.

Yes it was a boring game with not many chances. But to be fair, we have sooo many players missing, we had our 2nd/3rd choice centre back playing in midfield for christ sake.
Beye
Faye

Viduka
Geremi
Emre

It definitely made a change from recent weeks. Reading are infinitely better attacking than defending at the moment so it was nice to see Coppell just go for it rather than trying to soak up the pressure which obviously hasn't worked too well lately.

It's strangely perverse how, after one Benjani hat-trick, we couldn't score at home for months until another 3 for Benjani come around.
Ghana get the African Cup of Nations started with a win; what I saw of the game (the last half hour and a bit) wasn't bad, though there were a few fairly amateur errors. Nice strike from Muntari.

While I did not expect a good performance from Arsenal since I knew we would only be starting Gallas and MAYBE one other starter (who ended being Hleb), I did not expect this atrocity. Fabianski has been playing terrible, the whole just seemed to have no chemistry throughout the whole match. Luckily, this is Carling Cup, which Arsene Wenger obviously doesn't care too much about. I just hope this play doesn't flow into our match against Newcastle this weekend...
On a different note, did anyone see the Inter v. Parma match? Pretty ridiculous, Inter is down 2-1 with 2 minutes to go, and barely pulls a win out of their *** with a PK and another goal in extra time by Ibrahimovic...I feel terrible for Parma.

Arsenal were dreadful, even if it was their second string (which was scattered with 1st teamers to be fair to Spurs). Walcott did absolutely nothing, just as I predicted.
As for the Inter Parma game, when I saw the incident first I thought it was handball, even though replays showed it wasn't. So I feel a bit sorry for them but can understand why the desicion was given. Defending for the 3rd goal was no-one's fault but Parma's, you can't give players like Ibrahimovic time and space on the ball, especially when he's only 6 yards out.

As for the Henry comment, given that he was France's top scorer at 21 in the '98 World Cup I hardly think he was considered 'wasted talent'-his time at Juventus just didn't work out for him.

Ghana were quite unconvincing against Namibia; they lack a bit of firepower upfront, though the Namibians defended very well and also had a few good chances to draw level. Hell yes. Cattermole as well, although he's always a thug.
So Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool (Man Utd/Tottenham), Portsmouth, and Middlesbrough are the only Prem sides through, with Man City a possibility. That's kinda embarrassing - it's less than half the competition.

I do love Match of the Day. Lee Dixon and Les Ferdinand were trying so hard to be supportive of H&V, but the more they talked (and they went on forever) the more patronising they got. At one point, when they showed the replay of the second goal, Dixon said something like "look at that finish, he looks like a real footballer there!" And the commentator during the match trying so hard to make it out to be a really high-quality tie.

Yeah, I've heard. Probably not as bad as the ones I've heard about the sorry state of Gerrard's personal life though.
Actually that was one of the funniest things I've heard in ages. We have a guy called Frank in the pub I work in, who's a generally nice guy, but he's also a typical Scouser who CANNOT SHUT UP about how much he hates Man Utd. While trying to slag off Rooney (who he also can't shut up about), a Man U fan owned him so hard.
Frank: 'Looks like Tottenham couldn't score in a brothel....Rooney and Ronaldo could though!'
Bonehead: 'Oi, Frank.....you ever shagged Alex Curran?'
Frank: '......no?'
Bonehead: 'Well you and Gerrard are the only ****ers from Liverpool who haven't.'
Ouch. Frank had no idea how to respond and he eventually tried to save face by saying 'what United need is another plane crash', which naturally he got slaughtered for.
In other news, we get a shot at Robbo wooo. I actually predicted that draw spot-on, and the Man U-Arsenal one.

Shame to see Woody go but when you've got Kung Fu kicking Huthy and Wheater about as well as Pogy it softens the blow. The Alves saga seems to be drawin to close as well hopefully we sign him in time to play tomorrow cos am going to the game tomorra.
Yeah, I can't wait for that to be over. Seems like he really wants to come play for us too.
Everybody's taking pops at Middlesbrough for letting Woodgate go now, but seriously I'd cash in too. He's been average this season, and Wheater has regularly outshone him. Tbh Liverpool's form this season hasn't really been that different to the last one iirc. They're about where I'd expect them to be anyway, when I look at their squad (ie 4th place if they win their games in hand). I think they over-achieved in 05/06 to get 80+ points on the board.

Apart from centre-midfield I don't see how Liverpool have any depth to their squad. I spose that on paper apart from the top 3 Liverpool do have the best squad, but it's not that much better than the teams around them. Central-midfield is the only area where I'd say that Liverpool are notably strong (in terms of qaulity and squad strength), otherwise there are obvious weaknesses.
Even if their form hasn't been that much better than last season, it still doesn't stop them coming into form.

This season, they'll probably just shave it. If Benitez doesn't seriously begin to attract top-class players (Torres being the only one he's signed during his reign), their place in the top 4 is gravely under threat.
I don't know why he doesn't play Lucas more, personally. He was absolutely awesome in Brazil, and he doesn't seem to having the problems Babel is with adjusting to the game.
To be honest I think it's Liverpool's scouting network that's to blame. The good players they've signed have been obvious choices, basically. If he had the ability to sniff out less obvious, less expensive players the way that Wenger, Quieroz, or even Eriksson can then Liverpool would be a serious force by now.

I'm confused by this little debate.
I thought Owen's first was disallowed for some kind of foul on the keeper (not that there appeared to be one). If it was given for offside then the officials are blind. There was nothign wrong with owen's second and it rightly stood. Huth's goal was fine, I don't remember Lee-Gook putting the ball in the back of the net and Alliadaire (sp?) was just offside for his.
I'd say a draw was a fair result based on how the game played out.

Yea by offside I meant disallowed...sorry
So you think the ref got it right for his first disallowed goal?
poorquality
02-03-2008, 07:14 PM
To be honest I have no idea, I was playing pool at the time, I just didn't want to see people claiming one was a goal for their team but the opposition was rightly disallowed, mainly as that argument would never end.
Owens first goal maybe should of stood, but then you could say the same about the opposition, but a fan of one of the teams won't agree that both goals could of stood.
Either way the ref/lino gets one look at it, we get many replays, we may feel let down by decisions but you have to consider how difficult it is to make game changing decisions based on a split second. They might watch the replay after the game and know they were wrong, nothing they can really do about it.

Loads of bad decisions in the game but ultimately a draw was a fitting result.

So Agbonlahor is injured and has been replaced with Jermain Defoe for the England game on Wednesday.
Disapointing for Gabby, but not really a significant change since Defoe isn't even likely to make the bench.

Reports had suggested that Capello had banned players from using their mobiles, called them by their last names and is also keen to discourage the presence of wives and girlfriends.

Benjani has completed his switch, something in the region on £3.5 mill. A lot less then was being reported, but I think it goes up based on appearences.

Australia beat Qatar easy in their Asian qualifying game. 3 goals by the 33rd minute methinks. Would have attended, but for work. I'm liking our new outfits as well, even though they're not very innovative, only special thing about them is that they're tighter so that dirty Italians can't pinch nipples or something.

But Jenas ?! ffs
anybody watching austria - germany?

austria had two really big chances to score thanks to Lehmannish blackouts -_-

Was anyone watching the Cameroon - Ghana match? 92nd minute, Cameroon are 1-0 up, and Song goes down injured. While the medical staff are on the pitch treating him, Bikey (his team mate) runs up and pushes one of the staff and gets sent off. The stupid dickhead stood around looking bemused as to why he'd been sent off, now he's gonna miss the final.

I dont mind the 7 subs thing, I cant see a problem with letting more people potentially get a game, it works in the champions league.
They still only get to make 3 subs a game, it just gives people more of a variety to choose from.

This extra game stuff is bollocks. They say the games would likely be decided in a draw but I know if Reading were in a relegation fight and got drawn against Man Utd while Fulham or someone got drawn against Sunderland i'd be pretty pissed. It undermines the whole format of a league.
poorquality
02-08-2008, 07:06 AM
Exactly. every team plays every other team twice, once at home, once away....the system works. It doesn't get fairer than that.
An extra game will put more pressure on teams going for a title, europe or trying to avoid relegation, and as said above, it's meant to be a drawn fixture like in a cup, which is totally unfair on some teams potentially.
Spiney_Norman
02-08-2008, 07:26 AM
The teams are already complaining that there's too many games in a season, and now they want to add another thousands of miles away?! Of course, that makes perfect sense... I can't believe that the result will count towards the league, that's possibly the stupidest part of this plan.
Wouldn't it make more sense to just replace one of the 38 existing games? Why hasn't that been considered?
talk show host
02-08-2008, 09:41 AM
Half the teams would lose one of their home games which is a bit unfair. Plus it's a shitty thing to do to ST holders.
I don't see any way it can work. They should just play some exhibition matches at the end of the season or something.
If the top 10 teams in the table lost their home games, it would balance things out a little I guess. Also in the case of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man Utd especially, a lot of the people who own season tickets can afford to fly out to watch a game in, I dunno, New York, with relative ease.
Where are they talking about playing these games, anyway? 10 locations....I'm assuming none of them would be in Europe because it'd be a little pointless. So would they split it 5 each across the Far East and America?
talk show host
02-08-2008, 09:53 AM
Something like that could maybe work I guess. It'd be better than just slapping an extra game on anyway.
I'd imagine that's where the games would be played. Maybe more in the Far East as i'd guess it's a lot more lucrative over there and there seems to be quite a rabid fan base.

I wouldn't mind seeing some big games abroad, like Chelsea-United or something, but I doubt too many season ticket holders would be bothered to spend £500 to fly across to world for Spurs vs Bolton.

I am an angry, angry man....
Just got a beer so I can finish this off:
What the hell...4 attacking midfielders? WHY? When we play with a holding midfielder we do well, why change the system?
With the players we have, 4-5-1 would have worked, Ronaldo is much more of a threat coming in off the wing, don't stick him upfront.
Fergie praised Welbeck so much, talked about including him in his squad, and just never bothered, and as such we had 2 holding midfielders on the bench, not exactly attacking options. (Granted Carrick scored but we shouldnt be relying on him to get a goal in the 90th minute, we should of had it wrapped up by then).
O'Shea and Brown did not get forward enough, Giggs may as well not of been there. Nani never got a chance to show how good he is (due to city playing well).
Also everytime we shot, we couldn't hit the target atleast. Wides/Overs aarrrggghhhhh what the hell, we're supposed to be the best attacking side in Europe at the minute...yet we only get a couple of shots on target, and apart from Tevez' turn and shot, I dont remember one worth remembering.
All credit goes to city, their defence was immense, their counter attacking put ours to shame. We better pick up form again soon, I still think we'll win the league, but not if we perform like that every week.
Also...I will never forgive anyone related to Manchester City for allowing Vassell to score.

I reckon the league is probably going to go to Arsenal now, if they win tomorrow (which I expect them to do) then they'll be 5 points clear of Man U and 8 clear of Chelsea. Of course anything can happen but I believe Arsenal will end the season as champions.

I like how the media like to put their spin on everything, Querioz said he isn't looking for excuses and we didn't play well enough...yet somehow the reporter convieniently forgot about that titling his article. They'll put what they know people want to hear.
Does anyone actually believe United would blame Scholes after everything he's done for the cub...or any individual player for their performances. It was a team effort and it was the team that didn't play well, no excuses, we have ourselves to blame.
I fecking hate the media.
Only Man U related news I'll trust is that which appears on ManUtd.com. (Before anyone says anything, it's not biased, we play poor, the report states we were poor etc)
