Well done to Arsenal, but I don't want them to break the Forest record. Aston Villa seem to be heading downhill.

And to the yanks: Our game was invented before your country, go talk about "football" in the offical American Football thread. Thank you.

Yes, and yes. I think Arsenal most probably will though, Blackburn at home in mid-week, should be a win. Yeah it's a shame for Villa because they have some good players in Barry and Hitzelburger (if thats how you spell it) and others, so they deserve better, but I think bottom half for them this year.

Just seen match of the day, and some things to point out.

Great goals from Berger or Portsmouth, and that Cameroon Spurs guy. Also, goalkeeping from Hislop was awful, and the guy that presents Match of The Day 2, is really strange? Anyone agree? Also that random Palace supporting "comedian" that comes on at the end and tries to be funny? That's not what should be on a football show, it's stupid.

My 1,000th post.
Earlier, I subbed Dunn out for Davies. Birmingham aren't playing him, so he must be injured. Davies (spurs) had better keep up the good work until next month when I can get more transfers for free.

Also: When is Rooney fit again? I need him to start playing and scoring.

*notices thread again* So, what does everyone make of the 2 biggest developments this week?
1. Rooney moves to Manchester United (£20 million starting fee, possibly rising by £7 million).
2. Sir Clive Woodward resigns, possibly to take a job at Southampton at the end of the season.
1. Liking it. If he was MUFC at the start of the season, he would've been more than £16 million in the fantasy footie. Now he's at MUFC, he'll get great supply work. Also, I think Everton got a great deal on an average player. 25% sell on fee is great.

2. Twat, Rugby and football are completely different games. It'll never work.

mr snrub
09-03-2004, 03:56 PM
You'd be suprised. His football knowledge is actually pretty good. If he gets the job it isn't going to be coaching it is going to be a pure management job and nothing else. And as for Rooney, I think he is has gone too far too soon. He will not end up anything great like everyone says, he would of done better staying at Everton until he was about 21+ so he could really mature there, but now he has just jumped staright to a big club, so it will damage him in the long run.

Yes that is true for both things. Gerrard does have to play, and I hope Sven will bring on Wright-Phillips because he is playing brilliantly at the moment. And Wales.... well to be fair, Azerbaijan is a hot country and the conditions will not match the UK's current climate, but still. They have only had like 1 shot on target in the first half.

Wales should be able to beat Azerbaijan easily.
A draw against them is not good enough for a side of Wales calibre, Azerbaijan are even worse than Northern Ireland!

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 12:33 PM
Well to be fair, Azerbaijan aren't that bad a team. And playing over there will be very very hot, so Wales will be unfarmiliar with the conditions. After the first half, you would of expected Azerbaijan to ease a win out of it, but the second half is different, and now it could go either way with just over a quater left of the match. And quite honestly, it may be very hard to find a team that are worse than Northern Ireland at the moment!

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 12:35 PM
Yeah it is Smith and Owen starting up-front. I would also like to see Beattie and Phillips getting some experience because they are both great players who deserve to be in contention for places. I think it is embarrasing that someone like Heskey is admired by Sven more than he admires Beattie and Phillips.

Drop The Baby
09-04-2004, 12:38 PM
Kevin Philips? No chance mate, we've got a good starting pair up front with Owen and Rooney (most people's opinion) who are both young and then two good back-ups in Defoe and Smith and there's also Vassell. Beattie may well get a chance but it's unlikely that there will be 6 strikers used. And i think there are better younger options like John stead of Blackburn

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 12:42 PM
Ok, maybe not Phillips now but I think he should of been playing more a few years back, in his Sunderland days because he was playing great then. John Stead should get a chance, I agree with that because he is a good consistent player who scores goals and an England chance will boost his confidence and he will get better as a result of that. He is still young aswell.

Drop The Baby
09-04-2004, 12:44 PM

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 12:53 PM
Well he has done pretty well at Villa, but that is only a loan. He should play for a club that aren't as big as Chelsea, maybe Everton as a replacement for Rooney, so he can get experience under his belt. I saw him play for England U'21's the other night and he looked very sharp then.

Trouble is, who fills our goalkeeping void? My vote would go for Chris Robinson, but he needs more international experience. THeres always Nigel Martyn I suppose. **** Leeds for having the good goalkeeper history

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 04:33 PM
Yeah - I think you mean Paul Robinson. Martyn is too old now. Personally I very highly rate Chris Kirkland (Liverpool) and Robert Green (Norwich). The problem is that Sven hasn't tried out any goalkeepers apart from James for a long time. Maybe it is time to give the position to someone who is younger than 30, because for the past 5 odd years all it has been is veterans like Seaman, Walker, Martyn and now James.

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 04:36 PM
He has had injury troubles, and he has recently snubed a move to Coventry on loan, which may of been good for him to go, to get a good shot a long-term first team football which he may not get at Liverpool. But he is still very young at the moment and has a long way to go.

Adam Jones is GOD
09-04-2004, 04:37 PM
Doh, getting names confused. But yes, i agree, the age of most decent goalkeeps isnt going down, and again, blame the influx of foreign players. Kirkland is a good keeper, but I think Green will be overlooked as Norwich will be having a tough time keeping out goals this season. Then again, it may work to his favour, get more attention if he has more work to do

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 04:38 PM
To me it has to be either Green or Kirkland. Sven has got to try them both out, or have a look at them because at the moment it is hopeless. I wish we had as much choice for goalkeeper as we did for strikers.

Our football team is turning into our cricket team of a few years back - throwing everything away. Infact it is a real turn of the tide. Adam Jones is GOD

English sport is a big old pendilum, our teams can never all be good at once. I remeber this from ages ago during Euro 96, when we had the asges on at the same time, and hoiw th efortunes of both teams were the opposite at every stage.

mr snrub

mr snrub
09-04-2004, 04:55 PM
The only sports I follow are football, rugby and cricket...and obviously things like the olypics when they are on. It's always frustrating when your favoured team looses, let alone your nation, but it seems that with England, at one time there is always one of those three sports teams doing really well. At the moment it is cricket sadly, because we need our football team to be at their best to qualify for the world cup. There is nothing I want less than to see welsh people laugh after we have drawn or lost against them when we play them in the qualifying, so we need to shape up or we could be in for utter humiliation.

Traditionally, yes. But in Euro 2004 even that part of their game failed. I mean, in the World Cup, that pretty much was their game plan, but when it failed in the Euros, then they just didn't have any back-up, as their attack is truly woeful.

Oh, so true. The German defense would've stood better chances had their offense actually possessed the ball more than 40 percent of the tournament.

The best defense is a good offense.

2 - 2 draw, but it was something like 8 vs 9 by the end. It was 1 - 0 and 2 men sent off after 20 minutes

As for the outside the box thinking, our country is one that always sticks closely to traditions, no matter what the critisims (look at the monarchy), and this has had an effect on our sport. Cricket is a prime example with the younger players arriving of changing the normal 'pick a similar side every time'. The squad rotation is great, there's always a new player who appears who takes the spotlight and proves themselves, its a pity thtat football and rughby cannot learn from this.
Rugby in particular should learn, we won the world cup marginally, when we should have strolled it with the side we had. Now we should have worked on that, not sit back and expect results

Rooney has a lot of talent but people seem to have overlooked the fact that he didn't actually score many goals in the league at all last season, whereas Owen and many other strikers burst onto the scene and scored lots of goals... Rooney wouldn't be so famous if it wasn't for THAT goal against Arsenal. United now have van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Smith and Saha... thats all very well and good but I'd definately rather have Arsenal's forward four of Henry, Bergkamp, Reyes and van Persie, and what the hell happened to the United midfield???? They're a very creaky team full of holes that they are trying to patch up by buying strikers.

Arsenal for the league this year certainly, they've a very good shot at the champions league and they will win the FA cup if they feel like it:thumb:

Just got back from a 2 week business trip in Sweden so have missed out on alot. My main point now though is something that no-one has yet mentioned. Roma vs Kiev. Roma had better be carefull because it isn't the first time their fans have caused an abandom of a match involving them, and if I were in UEFA (which I am not, for the record), I would strongly consider chucking them out of the competition with a hefty fine! And it's not like the ref deserved it, Mexes was a complete idiot for doing it.

I say: Give Kiev the win, and chuck Roma out with a fine, and postpone their next two home matches for safety reasons. I might be being a bit unreasonable but I think it is disgusting.

Adam Jones is GOD

Well look at how the English teams were treated when our fans were causing problems. banned from playing in Europe. So if they can give that sort of punishment out, then its likely UEFA may take the same actions with Roma. If the fans are that passionate about their club, it will be a harsh lesson to them. I never did get round to signing up for that...and can someone tell me why we are playing Liverpool on Monday? I'm not complaining, as it means Ferdinand will be back. but it seems very odd to me...

TV coverage I can only guess. Chelsea today on Sky Sports and Southampton aswell i think, so if Man Utd vs Liverpool was to be televised it would have to be on monday.

The situation at Real Madrid annoys me. But only because I hate Arsenal (fans) so much - what with Real in trouble, they're going to walk around all smug saying that they're the best team ever.

I never used to understand why people hated Man U so much - now I know.

Nah, Fergie was right to leave him out. There was no way he would have had time to fit in with the rest of the team. To be honest I think tomorrow night is a little early, but the fans are hungry for it. I actually think he'll start with Alan Smith, then sub Rooney on at half time, or something similar.

Ferdinand's comeback was the main thing though.

Is it just me (and other non united fans) but was that game last night one of the most entertaining games you've seen them play? For once i was actually cheering for a team other than mine. And I wont say his name, since the papers/news have already overused it, but that lad had one of the more eventful debuts i've seen (and a dream one for you United fans.) Bad luck to Liverpool though.

It was the best match I've seen since Brazil played Costa Rica in the 2002 World Cup. That game ended 5-3, if you don't remember.

Best thing about it was, I'm a neutral supporter (or I try my hardest to be) but I was left with such a wide ****-eating grin on my face watching that match. It's so great to think that there's a young British player who will, if he continues anywhere near what he's doing now, do so much good for our national game it's unreal. Hell, he already has, but in the future it will turn people's attention to other British youngsters and possibly stop the almighty influx of foreign players.

Plus, he's so funny to watch. His second goal was unreal, totally out of nowhere. The third was just cheeky, and could not have been better placed at all. It's ther little things, too, like the way he sold the defender before he scored his second, or in about the 8th minute where the keeper tried to run it out and he somehow kept it in play. Or a few occasions where his first touch and initial sprint was so good that defenders were still watching in awe as the ball was being placed for a free kick. I don't think he even realises how good he is. He's just got such a sharp mind for the game.

Gabriel Heinze will be recognised very soon as the best left back in Britain, bar none.

He's got Ashley Cole for company. Although as a pure left-back, Heinze is better (imo). Cole's better suited to being a winger. Although I've got a lot of respect for Cole for what he did to Ronaldo at Euro 2004.

Alex Ferguson has already recognized this, by the way.

And now, for my third post.

Anyone else amazed by Ferguson's singings this year? In the past few years he's bought some crap, but he hasn't half done well this year. Smith, Rooney, Heinze; even Miller's impressed me from what I've seen of him. And it's nice to see him finally realise United are lacking a physical edge.

Adam Jones is GOD

Pfft...it's all about Championship Manager I'll have you know. When Reid leaves it'll be a disaster for you, but he really is far too good for Division 1...maybe Spurs will finally buy him. And wait for it, as I'm convinced the great up the table comeback is going to begin. Gabriel Heinze will be recognised very soon as the best left back in Britain, bar none.

I try and avoid Championship manager, otherwise I wouldn't leave the computer ever.

As for Uniteds signings this year, I agree, they have taken note of the lack of physical presence. United is one of the best clubs for a youth player to go to, as the experience there will toughen them up and teach them the ropes better than others. thats why I think Rooney can only improve now
