Spurs are looking good again this season, but that's what we said last season and look what happens. Darren Bent is a great player, but for 16 million you'd think he'd wanna start every game, and it's looking a lot like he'll be splitting the season in three with Defoe and Keane.

Does anyone have an opinion on the rejection of Michael Platini's plans for the reformation of the Champions' League? It sounds like he's trying to make it a bit more like when he was a player, which I would support.

I personally feel though that instead of giving national cup winners a Champions League spot they should reintroduce the Cup Winners Cup and reduce the number of Champions League places by one (or maybe even two) in the countries with three or more spots, and then give the next three teams UEFA Cup spots.

I was really impressed with the way we played against Celtic last night, shows real promise for this season. Some really nice football being played.

Geremi was great and got man of the match, and Luque scored twice. Solano and Milner both stood out to me as playing well also.

Allardyce has a tough decision as to who he's going to start up front with Owen, Martins, Viduka, Ameobi, Luque and Carroll all to choose from.

United finish their tour with a 3-0 win, making it 15 goals and 3 wins out of four games, which isn't at all bad. Nani scored again, looked spectacular but was a real fluke really, lobbed the keeper with a poorly executed cross. It's all good.

Portsmouth beat Liverpool in Asia cup too on penalties. And lol good point rik, maybe United could borrow one of those strikers.

I saw Torres playing against Portsmouth. He wasn't very sharp at all and could have done better with a couple of chances, but you can't really blame him for that at all as it is his first game and he only played the second half.

Though he did miss a penalty at the end in the shoot out, it was a fairly good save by James, but not a great pen either.

I just want the season to start now, it's all pretty quiet on the transfer front and not much going on. I'm still trying to work out why Man U have signed Tevez.

I mean he's obviosuly a good player, but do they really need another attacking player? They proved last season that they were perfectly capable of scoring goals without a 'natural' goalscorer, and at any rate Tevez is more a Zola/Bergkamp type player who supports another forward from a relatively deep role and Man U already have Rooney who did this job well enough when van Nistelrooy was still there. I don't get it.

ChodaBoy
08-03-2007, 06:16 AM
Well the striker role is something they are very much lacking in. Smith is on his way to Newcastle, Solskjaer is old and had a few injuries, Saha always seems to be injured, so it leaves just Rooney.

The other side of Manchester is pissing me off despite being a City fan. More than £22m spent on players, the possible lineup for the season is almost unrecognisable. 3 players from last seasons team were on the 11, Dunne, Micah Richards and Andreas Issakson. Issakson has barely walked onto the pitch so far so its like having a new player. A few weeks ago I would have settled for a top 10 finish (so long as there was promise showing for the future). But now just getting into the top 10 wont be enough for the season to be successful.

The_Passenger
08-03-2007, 08:04 AM
I think that Man City will be able to get 7th next season tbh, and that probably means a UEFA Cup place. That's hell of an improvement on last year. Sven has porven to be excellent in the transfer market, although he does spend soemtimes excessive amoutns of money in it.

As for the Man U thing, it just seems bizzarre that if they're short in the striker department that they're selling Rossi. I guess it must be because of the shoddy time he ahd at Newcastle.

I figure they're just going to play without a proper striker this season depending on how much they use Saha. It'll probably be two of Hargreaves/Carrick/Scholes and then an attacking 4 all swapping positions and basically wreaking havoc. All their attacking players bar Scholes seem capable of playing anywhere up front.

Also, Reading have signed someone! Emerse Fae, supposedly the replacement for Sidwell. I don't know anything about him but apparently he's a defensive midfielder so i'd guess Harper will be given the attacking role. Plus he scored a nice goal on a youtube clip I saw :o

Club record signing too.

Eh, as far as Liverpool are concerned I'm still dubious about some of the new signings.

As far as Torres goes it seems to me his reputation seems to rely on impressive form from 3/4 seasons ago. His goalscoring record recently has been ok, but if you discount the penalties (which is reasonable as I think the likes of Alonso and Gerrard will probably be ahead of him in the pecking order in that department) his goals:games ratio approaches Emile Heskey territory. Vornin's record isn't that great either, although he's apparently been played in midfield on a fairly regular basis. Babel I don't know much about so I can't say, but he seems promising in the long term. Benayoun's good but nothign special.

2muchket!
08-04-2007, 06:31 AM
Torres has always scored goals in La Liga. Even if he has a bad season he gets a goal count of the mid to low teens. Besides he's a player in the vein of Henry. Voronin's a more of goal poacher like shearer or RVN. Babel a good player and I've always been a fan of Benayoun wish the boro had signed him.

I think this summer we needed to sign a right winger. And yet again we haven't. I still have some high hoped for Boro this season as Tuncay Sanli looks a pretty good player. And our defence looks stronger than last year.

I think he's over his injury problems, and the extra 2 mill we're asking for is fair enough, with the prices players are being bought for nowadays, Dyer is worth more than 5 mill in my opinion.

In other news we've signed Cacapa, a defender whos been captain of Lyon for the past 5 years (I think). And we're very close to signing a Villareal left back named Jose Enrique who I know plays for the Spanish U21 side. Anyone know much about either players?

We're also in talks with Leighton Baines, though as is Everton. And Everton look the favourite to sign him as he was a Everton fan as a boy and would probably relish the chance to play with his boyhood heros.

I dunno, I truely believe he's over his injury troubles. It was his ham strings that were always playing up, and since his operation he had before the beginning of last season they haven't given him any grief whatsoever.

I can't see why this is so brilliant. He's just another kid who runs at pace with the ball and can do stepovers. It's nothing spectacular anymore. People like Ronaldinho, C. Ronaldo, Zidane etc, wore it out a long time ago. I can't see anything happening from this.

Also his ability to find a defence splitting pass, non-selfish play, and the fact he got taken down twice by 4 players and still emerged with the ball, they're also good qualities in a professional player letalone a 9 year old, it's not all stepovers. He looks special, but as he is 9 time will tell on him.

Predictions gentlemen, upon todays football match?

Methinks 3-2 to Man Utd.
I'm surprised people aren't predicting a higher finish for Pompey this year, they're only improving, and Man City could well get a top-6 finish this year, given the new signings, which now include Valeri Bojinov from Fiorentina.

But still, it's Eriksson isn't it. Although, Bojinov is supposed to be the Bulgarian equivalent to Ronaldo.

And as for Roque Santa Cruz, personally, I feel that he'll do the job for Blackburn, but he was never anything special for Bayern, especially competing for places with Makaay and Pizzaro. I do get the sense he could have been generally better if he'd have been played more for Munich. 38 goals in 143 apps isn't good, at all. And 143 apps in 8 seasons at Bayern does seem quite lacking also.

Regarding Eriksson, I don't even know where the bad stuff about him comes from. England did better under him in every major competition (bar Euro 96) than we had since 1990. A lot of the stick that Eriksson recieved was unjustified but i'm sure much of it also came from him being quite conservative and sitting on single goal leads which really doesn't seem to play to England's strengths. Add to that his apparent favouritism with certain players, his off the field antics, and i'm sure a touch of xenophobia on the part of some fans and it's clear he'd never have a good rep, despite his overall achievements which were really quite good.

Yeah, but England should be winning trophies, a feat that has been beyond us since '66 and untill a manager wins a trophy, be it World Cup or European Championships, there will always be massive pressure on the position of the England job. England have the players and they have the ability, they've had the same squad playing together now for a while.

Alright match, thought United edged it in terms of better football, we attacked more and tried to score goals more than them.

Van Der Sar was amazing, when it went to pens and it was at the Chelsea end, I was worried, VDS would have constant stick from behind the goal, and United would get it from the crowd infront of them. But all credit to them, they kept thier cool.

We don't though.

The England national team is inferior to Brazil's, Argentina's, Italy's, Germany's and France's to name a few. How you can say that a nation with so many superior teams competing for trophies should be winning them is beyond me.

Also, under Sven, we were knocked out by Brazil and Portugal in the major competitions.

Anyone who thinks we were better than a Brazil squad featuring the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto carlos and Ronaldinho really is delusional. Portugal are hardly a weak team and being knocked out by them is hardly shameful.

At any rate success in knockout competitions is hardly indicative of quality. See Greece and Euro 04 for an example.

I don't know, at times the team doesn't look together and like they just don't care,so I'd agree to an extent, but at the same time at the last world cup we were fielding the likes of Peter Crouch, who had a goals to games ratio of little better than 1:4 for the season. That's hardly international standard.

Not trying to pick on Crouch like alot of people do, but he's just an example.

Mr. Black
08-05-2007, 02:56 PM
Yeah, but England havent had a consistent an out and out goal scorer since Shearer. Owen was good yes, but he got that injury, and has never been the same since. I admit that they could do with a few changed in some positions, but I could pick the current defence and midfield in a dream team.

The_Passenger

But noone else has really been given a chance other than Defoe. Johnson had a couple of games but was mostly played out of position on the wing if I remember. Crouch is great for long balls and setting up players to run onto the ball, and that's exactly what he does, I don't know but I'm sure he got a few assists last season. Bent would be a better choice for England, but for Liverpool I reckon Crouch does exactly what we need him to, especially now that we have more out and out goal scorers like Torres :)

Shaky game last night against Feyenoord though, bit of a scuffle and Gerrard might have seen red. It was a bad tackle by the Feyenoord guy whoever it was, and we still managed to salvage a draw. Reina pulled off yet another penalty save right near the end. A fair buildup to the season I'd say.

I can not wait for the season to start now, Newcastle have looked great pre-season. I watched the match against Celtic and Juventus, we were playing some really great football. We've made some great signings, Geremi especially has really impressed me pre-season.

I really don't know who Sam's going to start up front for us, we have so many options. And our defence seems to be looking a lot better now. It's a bit of a shame we missed out on Baines to Everton, but apparently this Enrique guy we've just signed is a very promising left back.

Foster's a good keeper.

I think Malouda looks a better player than Robben.

He's a straight-up replacement. Robbens been at Chelsea too long and Mourinho is too bored of waiting around between Robbens injuries. He'll be at Madrid by January.

My friend always makes his own player, and he's always this 10 foot machine whose stats are all at 99. It's so annoying to play against, because I could be doin great and then this big fcuker gets the ball and BANG, I'm a goal down.

He does the same on Football Manager, he uses the save-game editor while playing it, gives his team £2billion, and sets all his players stats as high as possible - and buys all the world's best anyway. He does this ALL THE TIME when he plays that game. It's such a pointless, redundant waste of time because he just wins all his games 10-0...but he won't listen to reason.

anyway, some thoughts:

1. Rangers will win the Scottish Premier (easily)
2. Craig Gordon is a great goalkeeper, but £9million? WTF are Sunderland thinking.
3. As a neutral Scottish spectator, I'm very excited about the Premiership this year. I'm happy as long as Chelsea don't win it.

What's wrong with Chelsea winning the league in particular? As a neutral i don't want them to win, but that's because they play boring safety first football-just like Liverpool. So even if you're a Liverpool fan it seems odd singling out Chelsea, unless there's another reason.

Hah, well, that is true. They are rather soft, and its quite shocking that their leader in cards is Lehmann. When they get in flow, they really do play some beautiful football; as in Van Persie's goal against Watford.

The whole buying success argument for disliking chelsea is pretty redundant now.

It was never a legitimate arguement. No team in recent history as won the Premier League entirely off of youth players.

People go on about Man U winning in the mid-nineties, but for every Scholes (youth player) there was a Cantona (bought player) at the time. People also go on about Arsenal's young players, but a lot of them are bought in as well.

I'm sure this has already been mentioned but I will bring it up again.
Henry is now in Barcelona with Ronaldinho, Messi, Eto. I think Barcelona will average at least 3 goals a game with some of the best attackers around the world.

By the way, what is the best Football game you guys have ever watched?

In my opinion, the best football game ever was Liverpool vs AC Milan in the 2004-2005 champions league final where Liverpool was losing by 3 and came back to tie AC milan and won by penalty kick.

The whole buying success argument for disliking chelsea is pretty redundant now.

That whole argument was because the other big teams earned their budget due to previous success etc., whereas Chelsea got given an unlimited amount of money in the past 2 seasons.

The_Passenger
08-10-2007, 04:21 AM
Tbh if the only way teams can financially compete with the likes of Man U is to be taken over (who haven't been hurt financially by the arrival of the Glazers, something I've noticed some people like to ignore) by a billionaire then I don't mind.

That's the problem with cash prizes and the like nowdays. The teams which already have the money get even more and the gap in quality between teams would just get bigger and bigger as time went along. The league would become incredibly boring like that.

There are two.

a) Manchester United vs. Real Madrid - I believe it was 4-3 to United on the night, Ronaldo scored that hat-trick. Madrid won 6-5 on aggregate I think.

b) Newcastle vs. Liverpool - 4-3, and the other game, which was also 4-3 Liverpool won both, I think. But I remember that game so well.

Oh and, Deportivo vs. Milan. But you have to see both legs of the tie to understand how good the game is.
