Just got back from seeing Cambridge Utd beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0. We completely out-played them, and they were a man down with 15 minutes left. Our goal was lucky, but deserved, but what annoyed me was almost at the end, with the match all but won, our captain Luke Guttridge stole the ball off our striker Danny Webb when he had done all the hardwork and got one-on-one with the keeper, and Guttridge powered it straight at the keeper, when it should of been buried. As a result of this Webb squared up to Guttridge and they got in a fight. A fight between two players of the same team, when one of them is the captain? How often do you see that? I, and my mates I went with, was disgusted. I have never seen anything like it, after two decades of watching teams like Arsenal, Wolves, Norwich and Cambridge, week in week out, and for the captain and a key player to get in an un-neccesary fight at the end was appauling. However we felt Webb did have a good cause. He had done all the hard work and beaten a couple of players and was one-on-one with the keeper, and it was the fact that a mid-field player, the captain, came in and took it off him and missed an easy chance, really ****ed us all off. Has anyone else ever experienced this, because although I am happy for our first win of the season, I am disgusted that two players did this infront of the home crowd.

mr snrub
08-14-2004, 11:54 AM
Yeah, thats true, but it was that we had pretty much won the match, and although I can understand Webb's frustration, I don't think he should of started on Guttridge, the captain, because these things happen in football, and you are a team, so yeah not only will it of affected our spirit, it also made the team and manager look stupid and immature infront of the away team and fans.

Yeah, all the Chelsea players are soo cocky, they all say there is no-way they will lose. I hate to admitt it because I hate Man Utd, but I really, really hope Man Utd win. And I hope Arsenal make it to the longest ever unbeaten record, but sometime around Christmas would do me nicely for their first defeat.

mr snrub
08-14-2004, 06:32 PM
It is, I guess... but it is within our reach, we have had no real changes in squad or management, so everyone knows their game and we can play together as a team well. Unlike Chelsea, who have just thrown loads of good players together and expect them to perform...that is why I believe they won't win it this year.

Did anyone else notice how biased the BBC team were last night, Lawro has never predicted Liverpool to lose in his entire life and Alan Hansen was as negative as ever. They really have it in for Spurs (like everyone else really! ) We had 7 debutants and a new manager who is trying his best to converse in English, and they see fit to mock his accent, Hansen had the front to pick Spurs as one of his 3 teams to be relegated, I can only see three from Man City, Everton and the promoted clubs fighting for survival th the end

No, I'm not watching the game, that sort of game generally tends to be hyped up for about a week and then disappoint, I'm watching the test match and Flintoff just got Lara out with a beautiful bouncer, straight at his neck and he edged it to third slip

Yeah, fair play, but it has taken him 8 years for that, sometime soon for you will be probably well over a decade. I doubt though, with all respect, that Spurs will ever be a Premiership champions challenging team, because it takes alot to transform a mid-leagued team into champions, and I don't think Spurs have the attractiveness or pedigree to make it, plus it would talke something special to bring a team around now, to challenge Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd.

Well teams have challenged briefly last season such as Charlton and Birmingham, I agree it would be a gradual progress but the staff in place have the track record to prove that it is within their capabilities, and our pedigree lies within the past sadly, so it is up to the new staff to go some way towards rectifying that.

mr snrub
08-15-2004, 01:50 PM
Yeah, but every team challanges briefly at some stage. Man Utd are challenging relegation at the moment, will they be there at the end of the season? Same with Villa in 3rd place. Charlton are a team though who do have it in their squad and pedigree to challenge for that final Champions League spot, and I am sorry to say this, but I don't believe Spurs will have that for some time.

He is probably more over-rated than he is under-rated, but he is still a good player, you can't take that away from him. He was previously linked with a move to Arsenal after Lee Dixon left, but I think after stealing one Spurs player (Campbell), two would of been greedy, and unfair. And in answer to your question about Duff and Robben, I think Duff is injured, but not sure about Robben. Or is he suspended? Not sure.

I heard about that. He accused Sir Bobby of ruining his England career. Now that's a player who needs to look at his attitude. So much potential, so little of it fulfilled.

It's quite funny really, he should be proud to play for a club with a tradition like Newcastle's and should want to play anywhere just as long as he plays, yet he gets upset about being asked to play 15-20 yards further right than normal.

Ooh, while we're on the topic of Southampton, Beattie and Phillips are having an arguement at the moment, it started when Phillips joked that Beattie was putting on weight and Beattie replied, "well, every time I pork your missus, she gives me a biscuit," needless to say Phillips didn't take it well and they haven't spoken since, class

You probably saw players diving then, that's when players dive to the floor to make it look like they've been fouled when they haven't, some of the dives were pretty spectacular, some of them look like they've just been shot! Most footballers, excluding Defenders and the big strikers are wusses really, Rugby, now there's a physical sport, and no-one dives there, presumably because they'd have the $hit kicked out of them! .

I still can't understand - and won't for a while - Ranieri's sacking. He did amazingly well! 2nd place in the league behind an unbeaten team, and beaten by that team in the FA Cup, and semi-finalists in the Champions League. What's wrong with that? Many managers would be more than happy with that record. I know some Chelsea fans who were really against that decision, and werw about to give up their support. At the moment, chairmans are not willing to wait for a team to develop, and they just want sucess from the start, which I think is wrong, because look at Arsenal. Wenger took over 8 odd years ago when they were nothing, and now they are one of the best teams around, at the moment. Patience is everything.

Yeah, I was at the Arsenal vs Man City match last year, Arsenal won 2-1, and when Anelka scored a late consolation goal, he tried to get the ball out of the net, but Cole got in his way, so Anelka grabbed his head and shook it, not causing any pain, or anything infact, but he shook it for a couple of seconds, and then got sent off for it. It is so stupid some sendings off that happen. I think that a 3rd referee or umpire, like in rugby and cricket should be used, to help in those situations, and also for goals that may of been stopped on the line, because so many incorrect decisions are being made these days.

Even by Ruud's standards, that's a quite shocking piece of acting!!

It won a free kick, and should win an Oscar for biggest overacting, but the question is, will he trip going up the stairs to collect it and throw himself to the floor instinctively, claiming a penalty? (sorry, I have a vivid imagination  )

Its always been a weakness our left side though, we usually have to put in a natural right footer to cover, which loses our width, Thats why Cole is an asset, but we need more gifted left peggers

Definately.

He could be the running midfielder we need, along with Joe Cole. If wee play a right midfielder on the left then we are probably better off playing a more 4-3-1-2 formation, with the left hand side player hanging between defense and midfield, but they have to stay on the left to give defensive cover which Scholes never did

Or you could (controversially, as it wouldn't work) have a team GB with players from the Championship (D1), and select players from Welsh/Irish/Scottish leagues.

It's Butt again that I just don't get. It's a friendly, how about experimenting a bit. Maybe play Kirkland, Wright-Philips, hell...even Joe Cole. We're just not progressing at all.

I know, I don't need this stress 9 days before my GCSE results arrive, I'm dreading them enough without Eriksson screwing with the team (not just the secretary  ) a couple of days before the match.

Till_Lindeman001
08-17-2004, 04:57 PM
Yeah, I reckon he's just left instructions so he can spend more time screwing the assistant...if a midfielder's injured, Butt plays. A forward, Heskey plays. A defender gets injured...oh screw it, we'll lose as Jamie Carragher will have to get on. Really though, why can't he just think outside the box a little bit.

The smart answer is because he's spending too much time in the secretary's box! but I know what you mean, sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures yet in both major tournaments he's had with England, he got us knocked out trying to be defensive when we should have pressed on.

The olympics is primarily an Under 23 competition yet you are allowed 3 overage players, it would be worth sending an U-21 squad to gain experience but the amount of players would have to be split equally, which has always been the stumbling block

I can't help but think that although they needed another Defender, they only bought Woodgate for commercial reasons, ie, to improve their reputation in Britain, and to sell a few more replica shirts on Tyneside

Till_Lindeman001

Real Madrid's policy has always been to buy only the best in the world in their positions and fill the rest of the team with youth teamers, and realistcally Woodgate isn't either, if Real wanted the best they'd sign Nesta or Cannavaro, they've already bought Samuel who is one of the best Centre Backs in the world, and that means they can move Helguera into central midfield to help Beckham.

Why Is it called football? Its more like Rugby. Why dont they call it American Rugby?

As if football takes to long. At least we dont stop every 5 seconds like in American sports. I tied watching the superbowl once, after 2 minutes I'd had enough they always stop, play some music carry on playing, stop again, then when any interesting happens they celebrate for half an hour, play more music advertise something.

Yes - Arsenal, came back from 3-1 down at home to win 5-3 and equal the all time record for amount of matches unbeaten! What en effort. Also, West Brom and Aston Villa drew 1-1 ,I think.
