Yeh, weren't Czech Republic rated 2nd in the world before the WC? Or was that USA? Both completely wrong. But yeh, as Mclaren said, they should go in not thinking it's an easy match. Scotland doing better than the Italy then.
Britney Diva
09-06-2006, 02:10 PM
Well Europe and S America are essentially the only places where the rankings reflect reality in some way, so yeah. But the Czechs have been in the top 3 or so for about ten years now but the problem is the old ranking scheme FIFA used was collected over 8 years, so if a team was awesome a few years ago and wasn't so much now, they could still be ranked really high. That, plus their massive inconsistency on the world stage, contributed to the Czechs being well overrated.
The same thing can be true of nations that perform poorly. A team can have a great defence but have difficulty scoring, and their low ranking will give a misleading impression that they'll be easy to beat.

No point thinking that mate, ruuds gone, no offence but deal with it. I personally choose Saha over him anyday, Saha offers more to the game than ruud ever did, sure Ruud scored goals, but how many did he create? probably 2 in his entire utd career, he relied on the team playing well to feed him the ball for easy goals.
Right now I'm happy with having Rooney, Saha, Scholes, Ronaldo and Giggs all acting as attackers when we attack..like against Fulham....bring on Arsenal

Haha, I swear I said that like 20 times. Saha's finishing was appalling, though his general play is easily the better of Ruud.
We barely deserved the win, but Spurs were so pathetically bad they didn't deserve to draw level. I think, even though United's midfield was poor, Tottenham's general game showed how important Carrick was to them. I've said it before too, Carrick made Jenas look like a far better player than he actually is.

I think you'll be in a minority of people who think that.
Ruud always scored goals, Saha misses too easy chances.
I'd prefer a player whos excellent in the air, can take on defenders and can create chances, which he's shown end of last season and beginning of this season, to a person who relys on the other people in the team to give him the ball where he can simply tap it in....granted Ruuds scored some good goals for united, im not saying he's a bad player, but i think if it wasn't for injury, Saha would be just as good/better than ruud.
So what Saha had a bad game, don't take away what he did against Fulhum, Charlton and Watford. Bare in mind...Ruud had plenty of bad games.
Ruud may not have scored decent goals but he got a lot.
Lord Abortion
09-09-2006, 03:27 PM
Ruud may not have scored decent goals but he got a lot.
Yeah, and that's my point, he scored goals, and United haven't got a 30 a season man any more.
Saha will do more in buildup, but that's what we have Rooney for.
But Saha can't score that many goals in a season.
You have to hope Rooney will get about 15-20, Saha about 15 and Ronaldo, Giggs and Scholes supporting from midfield.
You'll have Rossi scoring 20 odd in a few years.

Ah dear, we (Spurs) are playing truly awfully atm. I don't understand why either, although I'm starting to subscribe to the "we relied on Carrick" theory, even though when we originally sold him I was happy for the money and because I think Zokora's just as good, if not better.
Still, I'm sure Martin "Tony Soprano" Jol will turn it around soon, plus the only game we should have won but didn't was Everton (bolton away first game is no easy prospect, and an on-fire Utd)

Lamps missed his first penalty in the League today. Shyte. Oh well, three needed points.
On the Ruud v Saha debate... There isn't one. Ruud is world-class and would walk in to any team's line-up, save for perhaps Barcelona (but he probably would anyway). Saha would not. Yes they are different players but as an out-and-out goal-scorer, Ruud is the modern-day master. Saha is good. Ruud is world-class.

That's exactly what I was trying to get at, thanks for summing it up better than I could. The main thing i've noticed without Ruud, is the fact the whole team is playing superb football at the moment (bar Spurs game). Sure Ruud got us tons of goals, but I'd prefer having 5 people (Rooney, Saha, Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes) playing well together and scoring atleast 10 each (the midfielders at least...Rooney will get 25+ and Saha probably 15-20) than one single 30-goal-man who brings nothing to the team anymore...
Sure Ruud WAS the best out and out striker, but he's past it now, and I feel bad for Madrid for paying so much for a player who's getting older and won't score as much as he's reputed to be able to.

So far I've found that we get 3 Premiership games on Saturday, 2 Serie A games on Sunday, and assorted other matches throughout the week (Champions league, some international qualifiers etc). There is also a channel which shows La Liga and some random South American football but I haven't had a chance to watch a full match.

I dunno, I don't see how he couldn't have given it. The keeper is the one who made a ridiculous decision to come out, did you see where he ended up? Even if he had got the ball (which there was no reason to) he'd have carried it ten yards outside of the box though. He's a great goalkeeper though, one of the best in the world.

Hmm, Newcastle got a 1-0 victory in the Uefa Cup. Good enough, but we're gonna have to start playing better than this at some point. On the positive side, Martins looked pretty dangerous (omg, what pace!), and Sibierski had a good debut. Scott Parker also, continues to excel himself.

He's Ryan Giggs, he's faster than most 20 year olds. There was definitely a little contact, so all I can do is blame the 'keeper.
I've also been impressed with Scott Parker lately, especially given the atrocious displays he gave up in his first six months at Newcastle.

Can someone who is familiar with FA regulations explain what the consequences might be?
Britney Diva

You should be able to watch it on the bbc website, I think was on Newsnight. Mike Newell, who's the manager of Luton Town, accused a number of agents and top managers of being involved in routine corruption. A couple of undercover reporters invented a company and pretended to have the backing of a billionaire investor and by virtue of this information they managed to bluff their way into this circle of agents and met with, among others, Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce.
Harry expressed an interest in taking bribes from one particular agent in order to buy only that agent's players, but I guess nothing came of it. Sam seems to be in more trouble though, he has his son of camera numerous times claiming that every time a deal goes down involving Bolton, Sam ensures his son gets a cut off the top which, if nothing else, is just shitty parenting.

I probably shouldn't criticise Chelsea too much, seeing as United aren't up to much, but Chelsea have just ceased to resemble a team of their obvious quality, or even a Mourinho team. You know there's a problem when Drogba is your hardest working player.
Brown's not a dirty player. He committed a lot of fouls, but apart from the one on Cech they were all small ones. Even so, he was entitled to go for the ball. Cech dealt with it well, most of the goalkeepers in the premiership probably would have been taken to hospital over it.
Derry drew 0-0 with PSG at home. PSG wanted the match moved half way across the country to a bigger stadium and ended up not using their full allocation. Stupid ****ers. I'm not expecting much, but I thinl Derry will make it difficult for them in Paris; they don't concede many goals.

I see what you say about the Drog, but he's is a really very hard working player. I'm really coming around with him of late... He definitely in my preferred starting XI right now. I think we miss Joe Cole. Anyway, it says a lot about our quality that we are still winning games playing below our best. God I hope we get this system sorted in a month's time... *cough* Barcelona, twice *cough*
Brown is dirty in my opinion. That tackle on Ashley Cole was malicious, deliberately over the ball. Ok maybe he's not deliberately dirty but he has far too much of a temper for my liking. He could have at least injured Cole so Bridge could play again, good-for-nothing bastard :p Yeah I thought Čecho was very good in getting straight up after taking studs in the shoulder/neck... More than I could say for Robben or Drogba. Ronaldo man of the match? I hope so. I have him in for fantasy, and add that to Lampard being my captain = :thumb:
PSG have to be one of the strangest clubs in world Footie. They are the only major club in one of the biggest cities in Europe, they continually fail to win anything, they have no consistency in crowd numbers yet they still remain one the 'glamour' clubs in France, if not Europe - I would imagine they are one of the most frustrating teams to support in the world!

What?
Firstly, don't kid yourself if you think there's no bigotry or violence attached to these games anymore. It may not be quite as bad as it used to be, but it's still rife.
And secondly, I was talking about the quality of the games. These games used to regularly be high-scoring, unpredictable, edge-of-seat stuff. I remember one season especially, when Rangers beat Celtic 5-1 in the first derby of the season, and Celtic responded by winning 6-2 in the second. All sorts of incident would occur...red cards, goals, penalties, embarrassing misses (Van Vossen anyone?) etc. Now they are mostly dull games it seems, the majority of which are played in the middle of the park, and the results predictable. It's been that way for the last 3 years or so. The games have lost some edge.
That's because Rangers are crap.

Ye, that was a pretty awesome goal. So Barcelona were lucky to survive last night. And Eto is out for at least 3 months.

Spurs look set to win 1-0; happy Robbie's scoring again but Spurs still look far from convincing. Mido's a good player but I have no idea (and I doubt he does either) of what he's supposed to be doing on the field.
Derry went down 2-0 to PSG in Paris, which is a very respectable scoreline I must say. Unfortunate they got a difficult draw in the first round. Surprise surprise, BBC pulled their coverage of the game because the French wanted too much money :-|

Hearts lost tonight, and looked pretty unimpressive bar a few chances. I get the impression their manager doesn't know what hes doing, got the tactics all wrong.
And Rangers won, whoop.

Those Argy stars really arent helping West Ham at all. What is going on there, everyone was hoping to se them light up the side. At least Spurs, Blackburn and Newcastle won. Martins got another couple, 3 now in total. Hopefully he will keep on scoring.

The Premiership isn't the easiest of leagues to adjust to. These guys are used to the Argentinian style of football and Argentinian weather; they'll take a while to settle in. No to mention the fact that most of their team mates are way below their quality level. The rumour is that their arrival has unsettled all the other players too.

So Adelaide United have signed Romário. Terrible signing. Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but I highly doubt it.
So with the Eto'o injury, Gudjohnsen will most likely start against Chelsea in the forthcoming Champions League matches. And he'll most likely score.

I heard about that and I agree it's stupid.
I don't remember him back in his prime but he must be old as hell by now. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The A-League has run out of ideas, so they're just buying as many South Americans as they can.

While I don't agree with the assessment of the A-League running out of ideas, the signing of players on four-week guest contracts devalues the league and is not good for anyone. Romário is 40 and has been playing in the US second league with Miami. It's a name player that might get a few bums on seats, but surely Adelaide is one of the last clubs that needs help with its profile and attendences, we've been getting 12-13 thousand each week and already have Bobby Petta, Qu, Rech, Aloisi and Dodd. I'm going to the Sydney match on Monday, should be great, Carbone's debut possibly as well.
By the way Romário is one of the all-time greatest. Maradonna said he is the best striker he has ever seen and would put him in his all-time XI with no hesistation. If we had him five or six years ago then I'd be loving the decision - as it stands, we don't need a lazy 40-year-old striker when we've already got the best strike-force in the league (Qu and Rech).
The game tonight wasn't bad, Lazaridis was very good for Perth, and Newcastle are really crap at the moment. Sunday's game will be a belter, as (hopefully) will the big match on Monday.

Well, I hope Perth Glory's long-awaited win will bring some people to next week's game, as it is our average crowd is only 7800, or somewhere around that number.
Also, Football Australia don't seem to be thinking of long term factors regarding the A-League; bringing Romario in, it seems to me like they're concentrating more on short term popularity, which won't pay off at all a few years down the track. I think they need to concentrate more on creating life-long supporters of the A-league, instead of hoping for some quick, cheap, overnight success.

Just watched Kevin Keegan say that he would have Beckham in his 22, and thought all the viewers would do so too! Coming from the man who was an absolutely shocking manager, much worse than Sven.

I meant for England.
He said:
If you did a poll to see if he is one of the top 22 players who is English, and is playing at the moment, he would definitely fit in my 22, your 22 and the 22 of everybody listening to this.

I think Beckham is in the top 22 English players, but that doesn't necessarily mean he should be in the squad. Haven't given too much thought as to whether I'd put him in my squad if I was the gaffer of England though.

I'd take Beckham ahead of relatively ordinary players like Greening and Lennon, and he's always going to score goals, but I think players like him become liabilities when they're not doing well. I think his absence will be good for England.
More injuries stacking up for Ireland. If we lose to the Czechs our chances of qualifying for Euro 08 are gone already.

He may play well for Real, but it has hampered his England performances, he just wsant contributing enough and was stopping much needed changes from happening because he in the team because of who he was, not how he was performing for England.
Splat_out_Plath, Lennon is very useful, though he may not be good enough all round to start every match. And why did you mention Greening? He plays for West Brom in the Championship! Do you mean Downing?

Maybe it's because Middlesborough got beaten by Sheffield. Maybe.
Aston Villa still unbeaten, drew Chelsea 1-1.
And GUTTED to be Everton. Chance to go 2nd in the league, winning 1-0, 94th minute Micah Richards scores for City. ahahaa

Oh Yeah, Downing, Greening, same thing.
Yeah, Everton blew it, they had so many chances to win and didn't. Take a look at the highlights on MotD, there's a shot by Samaras in the dying minutes that take at least three deflections before hitting the post.

That bolton freekick today which in turn got there first goal was so stupid.
Reina was clearly in the box when he let go of the ball, he may of kicked it out of the area, but as far as i know, thats allowed, ergh, liverpool had so many chances too, im angry now.

That was a really weird decision in every respect. He should have saved the free kick though, he didn't even dive in the right direction.
Actually, the guy commentating for BBC on the match insisted through 3 or 4 replays that the ball had taken a deflection off the inside of Hyypia's left leg, when the replay quite clearly showed it was a good half yard outside his right leg and didn't take a deflection at all

Well your 2-0 down already, 2 from Ole Gunnar. Heinze subbed after 30m, is he injured again?
3 out of 4 matches in the prem had a scorer after 2 minutes, very rare.
West Ham dropped Mascherana and still lost, but I think they should go back to the Harewood/Zamora partnership that was working so well until the transfers, and use Tevez as a sub until he starts scoring.
And Spurs are winning, I noticed Mido isnt starting after his commnets about Campbell.

i knew we were going to lose but if roeder wasnt such a fanny and played 2 strikers we would've had at least some chance. did he really think we'll be able to sit back and defend against one of the best attacking forces ion the prem for 90 mins ?

Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle, now...I didn't see the game as it wasn't on, but judging by the commentary..after our first goal we dominated the match completely, ronaldo hit the woodwork 3 times...he's on the form of his life right now, playing so well.
I also like how the commentators took every opportunity to say "You know...Newcastle are playing rubbish"

Oh come on, your a blue, you hate utd whatever the cause.
Id rather neither Chelsea or Utd won that championship, id prefer Liverpool too, or arsenal, but they arnt exatly playing well enough to are they.
Bolton are doing well enough this season to so far, but they will fade away tail end of the season im sure, and being a half bury fan i would hate for them to win it.
