Its because of Liverpool being Capital of culture for the year 2008. The whole city is getting work done on it. Although a lot of it is a bit pointless. So with both teams being in liverpool they decided to have them both have 08.
Liverpool the Capital of Culture? But seriously the '0' is ridiculous, it's like basketball. The less American-ised Football can remain, the better.
If I had a decent internet connection I wouldn't have to stay up so late downloading all the good goals from the weekend. I'm gonna make some massive compilations in the off-season :D

Liverpool has a lot of culture. other than London and Manchester it's probably the most cultural of of the UKs core cities. it's rich in history and arts and architecture and music...etc
seriously, Liverpool has such a bad name, which is compeltely unjustified. if you went there recently you'd see the benefits of the recent regeneration of the city centre.
where else should have got the award in the UK?

Apologies, because I'm going to offend any scousers in here.
Liverpool?!
City of Culture!?
Don't make me laugh...Honestly, I'm not bitter about Newcastle(nearest city to me, and contenders for it) losing it or anything like that, as that would be even more ludicrous.
How so?
Glasgow got it and i mean....jesus...
Not been to Liverpool for about 5 years or so but it was always a great place to go and why the hell not be a city of culture? Who are we to say what culture is / is not? Same goes for Newcastle, changed beyond all recognition over the last 10 years or so.

Well... I have a really bad feeling about Arsenal and the Champions League this season. I don't mean anything bad against Arsenal but it's just, actually, **** it, I do mean something bad against Arsenal, I do not want an English club going further than Chelsea in the Champions League, let alone winning it. Last year's victory for the Scouse made the Premiership that little bit less glorious (still glorious none-the-less) and if the Arsehole win it this season it'll be well shyte. They will progress past Juve, of that I'm quite sure now, and probably face Inter in the semis. I fear they will win that tie also. Henry has really turned it on when it counts, you can't do anything but give massive props to that man. Then they will face either Barca or Milan in the final. That's the only hope. I can't see 'Fica getting a win in Barca and although Lyon are absolute, undoubted class, I think Milan will beat them. So an Arsenal v Milan/Barcelona final. 'Dinho or Kaká better rip **** up against the Arse in the final I'm telling you. What a poor show it would be to see Henry lifting the trophy for best team in Europe.
Ah I'm probably a little bitter, and whoever wins the Champions League deserves to: it's effectively a knock-out competition and if a team can turn it on when it counts - as Arse have done - then they rightfully deserve the title. ****ING C'MON BARÇA!
----
Benfica are well worth their spot in the last eight. They play with such flair it is great to watch. Simão can play! Allez Lyonnais tomorrow, I love their flair too. Since I saw them play in February I have a soft spot for them, and I hope they can hold Milan off without the talismatic Juninho.
Long live the Champo League.

And now playing twice in a week is a f'ucking lot !!!!!!!!! What a joke this great game has become tho' eh? Foreign twats infiltrating the game diving if players come near them. Trying to influence the ref, trying to get other players sent off. It really is a f'ucking joke. I will not go to a football match until it is sorted. which foreign divers are these? Joe Cole? Michael Owen? Rooney? SWP? etc...the list goes on. Your comments are completely offensive and untrue, bordering compelte racism.
And players today are way over paid, i agree with that. But football today is a far more physically demanding game than it used to be. You need to constantly be at your physical peak to succeed. But then again, i think many players are greedy..etc Joey barton etc.

and when you are mentioning greedy players, why not mention SWP, who left a team that he made a difference on to go to a team where he barely plays and gets payed way more. i would like to see nothing more than Chelsea losing the title to Manchester United this year.

Players like Owen and Rooney go down easily all the time. I think it's marginally better than it was a few years ago, when the general approach seeemed to be that it was all just part of the game, but I don't think you can exactly say that English players are any less disposed to it than other footballers. More importantly, I'm now officialy holding out hope for a full-scale Chelsea collapse in the last weeks of the season. They're still big favourites for the title, but games against us, Bolton and Blackburn in the next few weeks are going to be tricky...
if i was a gambler i'd stick a tenner on manu winning the league, its a fair gamble i'd say. and i'm convinced that mourinho is going to do a keegan and lose the plot.
you omitted to mention that they also have to play up at our place as well, and they are well owed a good kicking and i've a feeling that they'll get it. should make for an interesting close to the season....

did any clubs try any aprils fools jokes yesterday?
heres one from the forest website:
World Cup Call For Kris?
Nottingham Forest's Kris Commons could play a starring role in this summer's World Cup finals - for Trinidad & Tobago.
The T&T Football Federation are investigating the possibility that Commons may be eligible to represent them in Germany.
The 22 year old midfielder believes his late grandfather may have been born in Trinidad.
The authorities on the Caribbean island are attempting to authenticate his claims but if Commons is correct, he would be eligible to play in the World Cup under FIFA regulations.
Commons told us: "It had never even crossed my mind that I might be eligible for Trinidad & Tobago before a member of my family mentioned the other day that they thought my grandfather had been born in Trinidad.
"It came as news to me but I've been in touch with the football authorities out there and they are looking into it.
"The prospect of playing in the World Cup finals is exciting but we'll have to wait and see whether or not it's possible."
If Commons does get the all-clear to play for T&T, he could find himself lining-up against England in Nuremburg on June 15.
it then mysteriously disappeared around midday...

Yeah, the title race is going to be much more interesting than we anticipated a few weeks back.
I really think we can do it.
Chelsea still have to play Newcastle at St James' and Bolton at the Reebok, both games they could easily draw or even lose...that's four points dropped, and then to lose against us...that's the defecit made up and two points..provided we get maximum points from the last games, we can do it.

He was sent off? The brief period I was talking about was maybe 6 years ago when he seemed to go off the rails- the two events that stick out are kicking Neil Lennon full force in the face (his excuse was, amazingly, that his foot slipped) and elbowing Ginola twice in ten minutes. He got the benefit of the doubt on both occasions, due to his reputation.
I think van Nistelrooy gets a terrible rap from other teams' fans. He does tend to go over a little easy (although I think he's adapted better than most European frontmen to the physical demands of the premiership) but he was never a diver. He doesn't have the physique for it, for a start, and he rarely if ever runs at players. I remember against Bordeaux in the CL the defender challenging for headers would lead with his elbow in the back of Ruud's head each time and despite 10+ of these challenges, which all seemed to be pretty painful, he never once protested.

yeah he was given a straight red card at home against villa quite a few years ago, the reason given was "persistent fouling". i only remember as one of my mates was a lower league ref at the time and he was defending the ref's decision!
there was a bit of bad blood with ginola so i can understand why he got a sneaky elbow on him, and the lennon incident was a bit of a dodgy one. even lennon stuck up for him and said he "didn't see nuffin officer". bit of a cover up.

I think he still scored it.

I've never understood why van Nistelrooy cops so much abuse, seems like a decent, fair player to me.

Rooney is not just about scoring goals. His creativity, passing and vision add so much to United's game that it allows others to score goals.
Saying that, Rooney is still the 7th top scorer in the Premiership, which is pretty impressive considering that Ruud is thought to be the main goal threat.

You can just see it, can't you?
Penultimate game of the season, United beat Chelsea 3-2 with a last-minute Van Nistlerooy penalty completing the comeback(and his hat-trick) from 2-0 down.
Last game of the season, Chelsea only need to draw to secure the title; confidence shot, they are frustrated by a display of dogged defending from Newcastle, Crespo missing a hatful of chances, tackled practically on the goal-line by a fantastic sliding challenge by Boumsong and a rasping 30-yarder from Lampard is brilliantly palmed away by Given. The ball gets pumped forward by Newcastle on the counter and Solano swings in a wicked Left-wing cross for the rising Shearer to deny Chelsea the title with a bullet header in the final minute of his Newcastle career, and securing the resurgant side a UEFA cup place.
Cue Drinks all round.

How was kicking a floored opponent in the side of the head within the rules? How are his constant elbows within the rules?
I'm actually a big Shearer fan, but the guy roughs up his opponents and gets far too much protection from referees. He's like a lot of strikers of his type, the older and slower they get, the rougher they play to compensate. Still, he was an absolutely phenomenal player in his day and I say wholeheartedly that I'd still pick him over Crouch for England if I could.

i already mentioned that the lennon incident was a dodgy one but apart from that i think he's justified in battling with defenders and giving as good as he gets. if he'd been a shrinking violet there's no way he'd have been a fraction of the player he's been over the years. i'd rather see a good honest bit of aggression in the game than all the sneaky cheating and diving. he doesn't get protected by the refs at all, at best i'd say it's 50/50 from all i've seen of him.
we need another english striker like him now. the international game might have moved on a bit and be more suited to fast passing than knocking in crosses but we still need someone to clatter the opposition defenders and scare the living shyte out of them so the other lads can get a look in.

no worse than what he gets from the defenders in the first instance. he takes it and gives it back, rather than rolling around on the ground like a big lass. if the refs know he's a cheat then why does he not get more cards? your argument is shyte. there's just no comparison between someone like shearer who plays the game honestly and those diving cheats. no comparison whatsoever.

sorry, i didn't realise a difference in opinion was allowed when talking about football.
you say he's an old fashioned style of centre forward. wake up, it's 2006 and not 1966. football is changing, and so are the players. i think we should embrace the change, rather than live in the past. just because football isn't as rough as it used to be, doesn't make it less enjoyable. i'd rather watch a game full of skill and passing, than watch two teams kick each other around for 90 minutes.
i agree with you that diving is the worst form of cheating, and i can't accuse shearer of that. we need to get rid of it from the game, and when we do i think football will be the most exciting it's ever been.
you still need to be tough to play in the premiership as it is. that's the great thing about football in england, it's played at a high pace and you need a good deal of strength to succeed.

take a look a page back at my earlier post, i've already mentioned differences in football style. it is a faster slicker game than it used to be and i've no wish to see 70's style football played. but you need a balance between the two and every team needs a couple of players who will scare the crap out of the opposition and go head to head with ponderous centre backs, if you don't have that then you'll get steam rollered. we're lucky that football isn't as formulaic as american football for example, there's room for different styles and different characters and that's the beauty of it. i maintain that england still needs a strapping centre forward in the mould of shearer, without that you lose one very important cog in the team. i'm pleased to see that rooney puts himself about but he's not quite yet got the self control to take the bashing from the opposition, i'm hoping he finds it in the next couple of months...
Faith No Doubt
04-04-2006, 07:29 AM
I don't think players who are scythed down by other players should try and get them back, that goes against the team ethic and the beauty of the game, they should use the advantages of being a better player (they have to be if they have to be fouled) to tackle/pass/shoot/save/etc.

Can't believe how easily we overcame Juve, after thinking back to Dennis Bergkamp's last minute winner against FC Thun!

Wow, only rarely have i seen poorer coaching. Basle seemed to have the tie won in the first half, so they were instructed to defend. That seems fairly normal. But why they pulled out their two best players is a mistery. Bad coaching, bad tactics, what a disgrace, for once a club had a chance to prove swiss football wasn't rubbish as everyone thinks. I guess we'll have to do that next year. Congrats to boro for taking advantage of the mistakes and i hope you go on and win it

United won, and I'm annoyed. Was Henry injured or something? Cause he's still the best striker in the premier league, and he should start every match for any team in the world nearly.
