Domestic football will always come first over England for me.

I'd take Chelsea losing every game for the next two years for Australia to win the World Cup, and I love Chelsea more than most Chelsea fans, just that for me, nothing comes before the Australian team.

He will still face nine months on the sidelines.

same. i'd take Chelsea winning the Premiership for 5 years in a row for Japan to win the World Cup. :)
Well I'd take Chelsea winning the Prem and Champo double next year and the Socceroos winning the World Cup. As Derek Rae would say, "If you'd offered him that before kick-off, he'd have snatched yer hand off". But what I'm saying is that if you said for the 'Roos to win World Cup, the Chavski have to lose 50 games in a row, I'd take it.

As for Smiffy, remember this (http://www.sportal.com.au/photos/news/058270news.jpg)? He recovered really well, and remarkably quickly. Nathan Brown - an Australian Rules Footballer for Richmond - had an absolutely horrific break last season, one of the ones that makes you squirm in your seat even after seeing it 50 times, and he's recovered now as well. Smith'll be ok, but it's f*cking awful seeing injuries like that... Can't imagine what it'd be like having it happen to you!

Messi's shot on the crossbar deserved at least half a goal.
Del Horno definetly deserved to be sent off. He wasn't playing the ball and although the charge doesn't seem so bad on replay, it was clear he was frustrated of trying to take the ball away from messi and decided to charge him instead. Pretending he was injured afterwards was smart, but the ref wasn't fooled

I thought it was funny that Mourinho was accusing the Barca players, including Deco, of diving when his Deco-led Porto team were the leaders in diving and cheating. but I still respect his managing ability.

Even today, where another team would have been looking for a big performance to bounce back from the midweek defeat, Chelsea were matched stride-for-stride for 60 minutes by an off-form Portsmouth side. Okay, here's the scenario

You are the manager of a huge club side, but out of the race for the title, and out of europe, and the "respectable" cup competition. You really really need to win the only cup final you have this season, and need desperately to win some silverware to appease the club's unpopular new owners, who could well sack you if you fail to deliver, no matter how long you have been there.
When naming your starting lineup, for this important game against an unfancied, but very hungry and passionate side, why not, for laughs, leave out the top goalscorer in the league who scores for fun?

Is this the action of a sane man???

and Also Saha who was put in (and deserved to be) scored and Rooney got 2, so there was nothing wrong with the strikers. Saha has scored in every league cup game he's played in, he deserved to play in the final, I personally don't care that Ruud was left out, though I wouldn't of minded seeing him come on instead of Evra or Vidic, but hey 4-0 can't complain

EDIT: i wouldn't say out classed. just more clinical.

wigan were unlucky.

Wigan were unlucky in the sense they played alot better in the 2nd half than the 1st, but they were outclassed, 3 of Man Us goals came in around 7-8 minutes, quick succession because Wigan couldn't cope with us on the break, they lost the midfield battle which cost them the game.

Saha is part of the reason we even made it to the final, Ruud wasn't taking it badly you saw him cheering away, if he can get over it i'm sure if you try you can to. Oh and as for tap-in...what do you think Ruud does? He's the best player in the premiership for tap-ins, a goal is a goal no matter which way it comes around.

If you're going to go on about dropping players, how about the fact O'Shea has just recovered yet got put in the midfield straight away, first game back and he's got a place. Richardson and Fletcher would have felt cheated. But it doesn't matter, Manager picks the team, the team won 4-0, there should be no complaints.

Lord Abortion
02-26-2006, 11:36 AM
I know, I still think that the best players for a cup final should be picked, and Ruud is much, much better than Saha.

Midfield?
since when do we have a midfield?
I thought he would have been better off playing the 3 up front formation used in previous games. Accommodating both Ruud and Saha.

Anyways,4-0, fair enough.

jaymz_is_god
02-26-2006, 11:44 AM
I wouldn't say he's "much, much better". I think van Nistelrooy is United's best striker, but saying that is a bit demeaning to Saha, who I also think is a very talented player. He has great pace and power, as well as being fantastic in the air.

Saying that though, I think Ruud is one of the best, if not the best natural finisher in Europe. His goals to games ratio is absolutely superb. 147 in 208 games for United, as well as 25 in 49 for Holland, which is pretty remarkable at international level. He's also one of the best players I have ever seen at holding up the ball. His hunger for goals and success can't be questioned. On top of that, he has a great disciplinary record. He's never been sent off in his career.

I understand that you were concerned that he wasn't picked, but I think Saha is more than capable at this level. I think the scoreline and our attacking performance today showed that.

Lord Abortion

Alright how about we leave the striker thing at a close? the decision was made and none of us can do anything about it, it worked thank god that's all that should matter. Ruud will be starting the next game.

What about Ronaldo? Scored again today, thats like 5 goals in 4 games I think, he's doing really well at the moment.

jaymz_is_god
02-26-2006, 12:06 PM
I thought I'd forgotten something. 41 goals in 54 Champions League games. 38 of those for United in 48 games. Absolutely phenomenal record. Again, it underlines the class that this man has. In my view, the best striker United have had in years. I thought it was a gamble at the start paying £19m for a man who had just recovered from a career-threatening injury, but it has proved to be a bargain. One of the few truly world-class players in the Premiership today.

Ronaldo's on a great run of form at the minute. Hopefully, he's able to maintain it and start to put in some more consistent performances.

Lord Abortion

Ronaldo adds a bit of flair to the team that is sometimes lacking. We seem to lack a spark of creativity at times, which Ronaldo can provide, but for me, he should be doing it more often. Well the Barcelona game midweek showed that for all Chelsea's dominance of the Premiership, the first time they came up against an opposition of genuine class they were completely out of their depth.
Mr Plath, I do believe that this is not the "first time" Mourinho's Chelsea have played an opposition "of genuine class". Chelsea played and beat the same team you describe as "genuine class" last season. They also beat Bayern München. Domestically, they have beaten Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. To say that Chelsea were "out of their depth", well, I have to disagree. With 10 men [went to mow?] they held arguably the best side in the world to a scoreline which has not finished the tie. I would say that they were outplayed, but I wouldn't say they were out of their depth. From a neutral stand-point, I reckon the second-leg of this tie will probably be a score-draw, 1-1, or 2-2, Barça might even win, 3-2 or 2-1.

However, let us not forget that the score was the same in last year's tie after the first leg, and we all know what happened then [or do we?, because it seems as though half the world has forgotten that Chelsea gloriously beat Barça last season].

I just bet £500 that england would NOT win the world cup. If I'm right, I only win £100 pounds (1/5 odds).

When I made the bet, I thought it was pretty safe. However, the amount of money I could lose is starting to get to me. I am able to pay it off, but I'm not sure I really want to risk that amount of money. I've heard that the chances of england winning are about 6/1 so I have the slight upper hand.

I think that SWP had a good game, even if they don't get a starting place its worth bringing crouch and SWP atleast to put on with say 25 mins to go, as SWP pace is trouble for anyy defence (beckhams not the quickest as well) and crouch can always be adanger from a cross or set piece.

I also think Joe Cole has cemented his place in the squad, I still think Downing should go aswell for back up

Robinson, James, Kirkland
G. Neville, Young, A. Cole, Terry, Ferdinand, King, Carragher, Campbell
Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, J. Cole, Wright-Phillips, Jenas, Carrick, Richardson

My tip for the World Cup is Holland. I reckon England have a good chance, they just need to be a bit more creative imo. Italy could also shock a few people. They've not had the best time of it in tournaments of late (Euro 2000 excluded), but I think they can do well in Germany.

Saying that though, Brazil will probably win it.

Seems everyones having a go at Chelsea recently :P Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Deco, Watson and Robson. Who can blame them really, one week Mourinhos saying Barca are divers and they influenced the ref's decision by crowding him, next week his players are seen crowding the referee after the Drogba dive, which was a dive everyone could see (Went down looking in great pain after a no contact challenge, 2 seconds later running around with no limp or sign of injury).

Yet Mourinho was quick to defend his side, because as we all know, Drogba doesnt dive, Robben didn't go two footed into that challenge with no intention of winning the ball, and oh yeah, his players are angels who don't try and influence dicisions :P

Sad to say, diving, and attempting to influence the game are part of the game which is down to referees to sort out, but to be so arrogant and rant about other teams while taking a blind eye to your own team, I just feel it's time he owned up and admitted for instance Robben deserved a red or something similar.

Sorry for the rant :P but other managers seem to accept sendings off etc, why can't Jose?

Yet Mourinho was quick to defend his side, because as we all know, Drogba doesnt dive, Robben didn't go two footed into that challenge with no intention of winning the ball, and oh yeah, his players are angels who don't try and influence dicisions :P

Sad to say, diving, and attempting to influence the game are part of the game which is down to referees to sort out, but to be so arrogant and rant about other teams while taking a blind eye to your own team, I just feel it's time he owned up and admitted for instance Robben deserved a red or something similar.

Sorry for the rant :P but other managers seem to accept sendings off etc, why can't Jose?

everyone just hates chelsea and jose, even for the most pointless reasons. too top on to the hate the media pumps it up by filtering all the good stuff out of chelsea and put them under a bad sign.

i really dont see why they would sack him now. they couldve sacked him at Christmas period. they might as well let Mick finish the season.

That wasn't what I meant, I dont think accusing every team of things that your team does the following week then defending them for doing it and say how you were cheated is a pointless reason.

I doubt they'd be under a bad sign if Mourinho would stop being so arrogant about himself and his team which he thinks are perfect in every way.

I don't hate Chelsea, I'm impressed with what they've done, they've raised the bar and other teams now need to try and match this that's fair enough, but atleast other teams will come out and say "Oh yes he deserved that red card, I can't defend him for that challenge" or something, Mourinho won't.

Wow, I hope people don't take this as him out in the summer, that would be jumping to a silly conclusion, he missed the Holland game i midweek, maybe he's just still got the shits.
Ruud is sensible enough to respect the manager's decision and Take it as motivation to get his place back, rather than sulk and demand a transfer, as most of the media bizzarely expect him to do. It's not like he's never been left out of the side before.

RandyfromPennywise
03-07-2006, 07:11 PM
As a Chelsea fan, I - on behalf of Chelsea: the club, the fans, the players, and, ahem, the manager - will accept defeat gracefully. I accept that we were tactically and skillfully out-played and it would have been an injustice for us to go through to the quater-finals.

I have heard snipets of what José has said. I really wish he'd stop trying for the ****ing gamesmanship award at every press-conference and admit that Barça were better than us. The reason why English teams don't do well in Europe: It is so hard to adapt from the English style into the European style - the best teams have done it and can do it. Tonight, Chelsea didn't. We played English style and the class of Europe's finest dominated us. Ronaldinho made Ferreira look like the worst £13.2 million ever spent, and no one got any change out of Puyol or Marquéz tonight either. Robben was a waste of a spot in the side and Drogba offered little, although the service was equally to blame. Gudjohnsen and Crespo were the class we needed in there from the start but they got 30 mins and it was nowhere near enough.

Ronaldinho is unquestionably the best player in the world and he earnt his corn tonight. Did you see his strength too? He put John Terry on his arse before scoring the goal. The goal - Carvalho's poor positioning was a huge factor, he opened the channel for 'Dinho, but I really thought Čech could have done a lot better, perhaps he should have palmed it away. I reckon Carlo would have saved it.

AND! - There is no way that was a penalty, not in anyone's book. I think Marcus Mirk (sp?) felt a little sorry for us and he must have liked Terry's endeavour. It looked like JT was going for an air-shot anyway! Looking forward to next season, but the tactics for Europe must be addressed. José showed that he doesn't always get it spot on tonight, that can't happen again. Perhaps some players need to go. From that starting line-up, I wouldn't shed tears if Ferreira, Robben and Drogba moved on, although there is practically no chance of any of those three leaving. I think we needed Wayne Bridge at left-back and Gallas at right-back, that would have been a lot better with Billy marking 'Dinho... Quite a deflating game really, not overly disappointed because I really knew it was over before a ball was kicked this morning (it's a 6.15am kick-off where I live). And weren't Juve lucky! Worst 'keeper mistake of the year? The decade?

'Gers were galant and unlucky, did amazingly well to prevent Villareal from beating them twice, something many other teams haven't managed recently! Løvenkrands has been doing well in the Champo, wonder if he'll leave Ibrox in the summer?

We must be the most under-rated country at the world cup. Our chances of finishing ahead of Japo and Croat are a shyte-load better than people think... Then we'll face either Italy or the Czechs which may prove a problem.

And Roma - I'd be scared if I was you, they have just set the record for consecutive wins in Serie A. Montella, Chivu, Mancini are all on song, and then they have a few of the best youngsters in the world as well, names have escaped me, De Rossi and an Italian national-team player, anyway, very good team! If you struggled past Stuttgart I can't see much hope against Roma, but Boro can turn it on when it counts, as all the supporters of the big clubs know!!!

That's true, it's just that we lack real fire power up front. We need a Ruud or a Thierry who is a real good finisher, or a Rooney even.

Crouch has been average, though he gets assists. Morientes has sucked, and Cisse is just rubbish. He's fast but can't finish for his life.

That's where the money should be going, not to more defenders, wtf.

Gerrard is our top scorer for Christ's sake!

And I've noticed that Alonso is beginning to go a bit sour. When at the top of his game, he's probably the best passer of the ball in the EPL, but lately he hasn't been so good. Injuries may be a part of it, but still.

From what i have seen of the Australian team i've been really impressed. You do have some quality players. I'm not sure if you can progress through the group stages though. That's one hell of a tough group where everyone has a genuine chance of qualifying.

As for Liverpool vs Barca. I don't actually think Barca are very strong defensively. They defend through controlling possession as they did against Chelsea last night. Chelsea simply didn't get enough of the ball to be any threat at all. I think Liverpool will be better at dealing with this than Chelsea are, since they are more used to sitting back in Europe.
I actually think Cisse has a lot of potential. He had a good game last weekend and was unlucky not to score. He hardly plays, and when he does he's on the right wing. If he had a run of games in his normal position like Morientes has had, i'm sure we'd see the best of him. As for Morientes, i don't know if his heart is in it or not. We all know he's class, but a few decent touches and passes each game isn't enough. As for Crouch, he can be quiet some games but he's normally a threatening presence + he's amusing to watch.

Mourinho spat at by Barcelona fans at airport

LONDON: Barcelona fans insulted and spat at Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho when he and his players arrived in Spain on Sunday for their Champions League clash.

The Premier League club said about 50 Barcelona fans were waiting for Chelsea at the city airport and some spat at the bus when Mourinho and the team were on board waiting to leave.

Former Barcelona assistant coach Mourinho had earphones on and ignored the abuse but then a series of spits were aimed at his window, Chelsea said on their official website.

They quoted Chelsea TV cameraman Kieren Startup, who was filming the scene, as saying: “There were very few police to marshal it, and they didn't seem interested once the players got on the coach to stop any abuse.

“It was intimidating, there was a lot of aggressive chanting at Mourinho to begin with, but he ignored it and then they moved on to angry gestures and spitting. Everyone else on the coach seemed to be unbothered.”

Barcelona are 2-1 up going into Tuesday's second leg of the first knockout round tie at the Nou Camp after winning the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Feb. 22.

Chelsea were a man short for more than 50 minutes after their Spanish left back Asier del Horno was sent off for a foul on Barcelona teenager Lionel Messi.

Mourinho accused Messi of theatrics, claiming his reaction helped get Del Horno dismissed. – Reuters

I was disappointed about Liverpool last night. They seem to have a lot of those games where they make plenty of chances but they just can't get the ball into the back of the net. Morientes was once again woeful. I could run quicker than him, and i'm not joking. Crouch wasted some good opportunities too. Liverpool didn't have the quality up front to merit a place in the quarter finals, while Benfica showed some real quality with both goals.

The only English team left now isn't really very English. My interest in the competition has wilted. I'll support AC Milan i guess.
