Anyone ever read the football factory?
Great book, kicks the arse of the film.
Same with Soccer Dog, the movie was nothing on the book.
It's awesome to see the lower/non-division sides cracking the premiership sides when they play development line-ups. I mean, I would have been gutted if United had lost but since they drew I can have a bit of a laugh and Burton will get a sweet payday.

I hope Leicester win the F.A. cup. Naturally
I have a £1 stake at 250-1 that they will.
As for FIFA 2006, if we're talking about the World Cup I think England's team is looking very strong. I'm sure England can make to the semi-finals, maybe even the final. Whether we will or not is (as always) another matter. We're playing in Group 1, which means we get longer breaks then other teams between the group stage and the 2nd round, and then between the 2nd round and the quarters, and then between the quarters and the semi's, etc... which should play into our advantage, giving us an extra day prep. for most games.
If England do make it to the final, anything can happen. We may even win a penalty shoot out.

If Holland can't finally get the monkey off their back with having virtually a home tournament they never will. Apart from failing to qualify last time round (ouch!) they've gone out on penalties in the last four major tournaments. It's ludicrous. Ironically for Bergkamp, easily one of the world's top strikers and playmakers of the last decade, his fear of flying has zero effect on this one but he's on his way out. Same with Edgar Davids, probably the only midfielder to rival Roy Keane for bulldog-like intensity. As usual it will come down to whether the manager can pull the factions together. So often Holland have been the best team on the planet but have self-destructed.
The other sides I want to see succeed are Spain and Ghana. It would be awesome to have an African nation reach the Semis and Spain to finally show what they're capable of. They're seeded every time but I can't remember them ever reaching the semis. I'd like to see England perform above expectations too. As usual they've got a talismanic striker to worship but the same midfield and defensive frailties.
And as much as it pains me to wish Australia the best ... I hope they don't lose every game. There, I said it. Now why do I feel so dirty ...?

I think Bolton could give you some real trouble, but - as said before - if they are missing their Africans they could struggle. Diouf, Faye, Jaidi, where's N'Gotty from? El-Hadji, Faye and Jaidi are three of their best/most influencial players... By the way on Senderos - I rate him pretty highly I have to say. Even though Drogba's destroyed him (Charity Shield most notably, but the League game at the Bridge also) he is still young and looks very promising. Big, strong, tall, the right amount of aggression for a CB.
Wayne Bridge hasn't played (as I know of) a competitive game all season. The Bridge situation is stupid now. He is back to full-fitness yet José just won't pick him. He played 75 minutes of first-team action in the FA Cup last week, and I think he played about 60 minuntes against Charlton in the Carling Cup a few months back. That's it. We have Del Horno and Bridge, yet José picks Gallas there more often than not. PLAY Wayne Bridge for fek's sake, he is great. Not to mention he scored one of the best goals of all-time at Highbury

Becks is inconsistent in the extreme against top internationals and Joe Cole, while he could turn out to be the best of all of them, is untested in that arena as yet. The other two are class.

You're right, Terry is awesome. King is similar to Cole in that he has great potential but is unproven at the highest level (friendlies are not at that level) and playing for Spurs has limited his opportunities in Europe. Young is decent ... fine and dandy in the prem but is that enough when you're facing the world's best? Again, he's unproven.
Maybe frailties was the wrong word, maybe not. If they fire on all cylinders England could blow through to the final very convincingly, but the same could be said of ten or twelve other sides. The highest echelon contains Italy, Holland, Brazil, Argentina and, given the home advantage, probably The Krauts. On the next step down, and still very promising and dangerous, are England, Spain, France, USA and the Czechs. Then the dark horses like Portugal, Ukraine and Ghana.
To hope for England in the final, I'm with you. But to expect it?

Yeah, you're right about USA, though I think Portugal is often overrated, but you get my point. Expecting England to be in the final, or even the semi finals, ain't living in the real world. They have a decent chance, and I hope they do make it, but it's going to take a fair bit of good fortune for them and for other sides to play below their best.
The dream final would be Argentina vs England probably which means either both have to win their groups or both finish runners-up. All the depth of the history between them, on the pitch and in the war ... the tension would be amazing. It would be epic.

Ever since they won the World under-21 cup or whatever it was, when Figo and co were in that bracket, commentators have always included them in predictions of who will perfom. But they never have. At least they have a very easy group with Mexico, Iran and Angola.
I'm with you that you can't take those FIFA rankings too seriously. USA beat Portugal in 2002 helping to eliminate them in the very first round. Then they comfortably beat the Mexicans and only lost to Germany 1-0 in the last 8. This time round they're in the toughest group and I'll be as surprised as you if they get past Italy and the Czechs (although Italy are notoriously slow starters in the group stage). As a spurs fan, its good we've finally got strength in depth, but if he keeps on buying loads of players (especially midfielders) then we're gonna have to keep getting mugged off by other clubs for our squad players (£7m for Davis, Pamarot AND Mendes) ....pompey will now stay up, that was an awesome piece of business on their part, i thought they might go down before due to the fact they are bad enough without losing 3 players to the african cup of nations, but now i reckon they'll stay up. I think they are all probably players who are not quite up to Spurs' current level, yet will do well at a lower-placed club. And 7 million squid is decent, for just over 2 mil each I'd say it's ok.

It's a myth that the top teams have more players than the smaller ones.Yeah that is the full list of professionals at the club. However, Yves Makaba-Makalamby is fourth-choice 'keeper and has never made a first-team squad, let alone played, same for Jonas Elmer, young Suiss left-winger/left-back. The actual squad Mourinho chooses his team from each week is realistically 24 (and being honest, it's probably more like 20, with Huth, Diarra, C. Cole etc.).
EDIT: Scott Sinclair as well. Brilliant talent, young Scottish striker, but he plays for the Youth team mainly, with only a couple of appearances for the Ressies.
The whole argument of big squads is false, it is, of course, the quality of the squads. Look at Robert Huth and Carlo Cudicini (just two random names), they'd more than likely be first-team regulars in any other side in the Prem, Huth maybe not as much, but he never plays regularly at all, and Carlo gets maybe 5-10 matches a season. Then players like Wayne Bridge and Glen Johnson, and Wright-Phillips... Very strong squad Chelsea have. But same goes at the other big clubs, just to a little lesser extent. O'Shea would hardly be playing if Heinze was fit, now with Patrice Evra 'n' all, and he's quality, a starter in 95% of other teams, same goes for Cissé, Riise, Morientes, Senderos, Dudek and many more...

On another note I am well and truly disgusted at the performance of players like Mendieta, Doriva and Rockemback. They should never pull on a boro shirt again. I'm not going to blame McClaren any more but I sincerly hope Downing, Parlour and Anthony McMahon (quite the young prospect too) are fit soon so that trio don't get to drag us down. We badly, and I mean badly to get 6 point from the next 2 games or else were going down.

Boro + Mr Amsterdam, for fek's sake that was disgusting. Cattermole was your best player. I never, ever thought before that Boro were even a chance of going down but if they play like that again, anything could happen. A really terrible performance. Rochemback really needs to pull his finger out and do the hard yards in a game like that, something he just doesn't seem prepared to do.

The worst thing is that Boro are probably United's other bogey side, and then they let the Arse bend them over like that. Bastards. If you're gonna trip us up, you should at least bring your spines when you face the Arse.

Lee Cattermole was our best player by a country mile yesterday I hope he plays next week. it just goes to show what being at the bottom of the table does to a tea,. Last year we played aresnal and beat 3-1. And yesterday, well I start to wonder if there was any effort put in at all. And the fact that McClaren insisted on giveing Rockemback time to settle in, supposedly like Juninho did. Well for one thing I distinctly don't remember him needing half a season to settle in.

they actually had the rule book out on skysports news this morning and it does actually state that the player should be booked if he jumps over the barriers and celebrates with the crowd. so the ref was overly officious (as he can still apply some common sense) but did actually apply the rules as written.

A girl Chelsea fan? Well I never...
- Sven, he is shyte, a terrible gaffer, I'm so glad we've GUUS HIDDINK THE BEST GAFFER IN THE WORLD equal with The Special One.
- Lord - Ronnie should've been booked, you can't lunge in like that with studs up. No way is it red though, he was 6 inches from anything. On tackling, I don't understand why players slide like Ronaldo did, facing up... I can't slide-tackle like that properly, it has to be side-on, I don't understand why players go in like that... Maybe they just don't know how to tackle?
Take Warning - I think we wrapped up the Prem when a) We smashed the Scouse 4-1 on their home turf and b) We smashed the Arse 2-0 on their home turf :p
-Lee Cattermole - the next Fabregas? Hahaha, Cesc is 18 and there's already "the next Fabregas".
- Chelski Sunderland - We've always struggled up there, I still have nightmares about the four they put past us four or so years ago, urrghh Niall Quinn for fek's sake... I think we showed a bit of character to win like that, but we shouldn't have let them put us in that position in the first place. Crespo is God. After Franky, JT, Duffer, ZOLA and a few others. Can't say much about the red, it is the law... I think the law needs a certain amount of leniance (sp?) so common-sense can be applied. Ah well, at least Duffer'll be starting against Charlton I hope.
Alright peeps, I'm heading overseas tomorrow so I'll catch ya in four weeks. Look for me at the Chelsea v Charlton match on Sunday, lower West Stand, or the Lyon v Bordeaux top-of-the-table clash on the 4th! GET STUCK IN!

Aparently were a number of clubs wanting to get Wayne Bridge on loan which I am quite happy about. I think we will definetly boost the team as he wants to play for England. I honestly don't understand why the FA or the England fans put up with Sven. It's almost like he wants to get sacked, but the FA is too dumb to do anything but offer him larger salaries.
Anyway, new Ireland manager(s). Steve Staunton with (inexplicably) Bobby Robson in an advisory role. The FAI saw fit to appoint Staunton an advisor he'd never met before without consulting him. The whole thing is weird.
And Zidane's retiring after the WC. Not before he returned to help knock us out of it though :(

The article I read on the latest goss about Sven was hilarious. And you're right, I don't know why they put up with him, but it might be a little risky to hire a new manager this soon before the World Cup, it's too hard to get to know the team and how they play in such a short space of time.
Anyway, I wish the best to him and the England squad, if they go further than the Australian team I will support them in the World Cup since ... most of my family is English.

Very much doubt he'd go in the near future but some way down the line I can see him playing for Man Utd. Don't matter I suppose Adam Johnson has looked in fantastic form (so too has James Morrison). But then Middlesbrough have aalways been credited with producing excellent young talent.
As for staunton I believe he applied for the Job but the FAI declined as he didn't have any real experience. He came back with Sir Bobby as an advisor and they excepted. Which is fair enough especially what Staunton did for the Rep of Ireland.
I was at the Reading game last night, I don't really support them but I live in the area and I like to see how they are doing. Was quite a good game, West Brom looked very ordinary and no way a leagues difference from Reading. Lita's second goal was pure class.

Yeah, Rossi has looked very promising whenever I've seen him play. Definitely one of the best of the current crop of young players at Old Trafford, and someone who I honestly think could be a big star in the future. I found Ferguson's comments after the game to be a bit out of line...we should easily have beaten them, but saying things like how we could have scored more but there was no point in humilating them seemed a bit rude, especially after they'd already got a draw against us.
The question is, can she get you free tickets for anything?
Nah, unfortunately not...

Yeah - it's been forgotten alright, that's why our name is on the trophy.
It wasn't Jack Walker's money (or lack of) that caused our relegation, just injuries, poor signings, soldiers of fortune and lack of direction.

1. it has been forgotten and no-one gives a rats arse you won it anyway. let's be honest here.
2. the downfall really did strangely coincide with the lack of a sugar daddy to prop up the clubs finances. strange indeed.
3. blackburn? good? those two words ceased to go together the day Mr Shearer packed his bags and used the best thing in blackburn...the road out of it.

1. The only thing people care about at St James Park is Michael Owen, and even then you screwed that up. Also, if something that happened 11 years ago is forgotten now, why remember a goal-scorer from 40-odd years ago?
2. The downfall wasn't down to Walker's money, it was the fact the side that was relegated featured only one player that won the Premiership - and the rest were just not good enough.
3. Yeah we're really bad - I remember the day we beat you 5-2, and that donkey Martin Taylor scored twice. And the time we did the double over Arsenal. And the time we beat Man Utd at Old Trafford.

the thing is, Newcastle will always be in the news because a big club is always news, no matter what happens. no-one cares about blackburn and never really will. unless you're unlucky enough to live there of course.
and yes you are really bad. and yes, the lack of money did cause the downfall, thats why there were no decent players around. it's not rocket science. don't even start with the scores, a 5-1 scoreline in our favour in the 2002-2003 season springs to mind but i don't even need to use it to be honest. a small club will always be a small club, live on your memories and enjoy them, without another benefactor that's all there will be. memories.

Yeah - Damien Duff was terrible
The news sucks anyway - half the time the Newcastle news is "Souey to get the chop" and "Owen says he is happy at Newcastle".
What memories do you have as a Newcastle fan? Kevin Keegan flogging Andy Cole to Manchester United? Keegan blowing a gasket on live television? Throwing away a big lead to lose the title? Ruud Gullit? Losing the FA cup final?
Even if all we had was memories - at least they're great memories.

I'd prefer to look at the positive side, reaching the FA cup final 2 years on the trot and then the semi the year after, hammering Manu 5-0, being at Bobby Robsons home debut when we hammered sheff wed 8-0, being 2nd in the league in successive years, all the fun of the champoins league etc etc..
the main thing is, i don't need to use them as i know the future will at least be a repeat of that and hopefully better. you just keep reliving those never-to-be-repeated glories.
and even when the going isn't good we're still bigger news that b/b will ever be. because, well, no one gives a toss.

Rovers actually win honours - you just come close.

Sounds to me you're the one reliving former "glories", or at least wanting to, which is even worse. You have Souness as a manager, Owen out for months and a captain retiring. Yeah - you better hope cuz you have nothing else.
Yeah, Newcastle will always be bigger news - but they'll always be a bigger disappointment too.

Who cares? They're awful.
You can say "Blackburn Rovers" if you want, lightning won't strike you.
We're not going for mid-table obscurity - we finished tenth the first season which was great for a promoted side, sixth the following season, then we faltered for two seasons until we found our feet again and now the only way is up - eighth, which is higher than Newcastle, I think you'll find and at least our strikeforce isn't injured or retiring.
Say what you like about Bellamy, he got us into the semi-finals of the League Cup and fired us comfortably into the FA Cup fourth round, more than you can say for Michael Owen.

You can do Maths - now that I did not expect.
If you read it properly (probably too much Newcastle Brown...or not enough) for a promoted side survival is the priority, and we did it with style. We proved we weren't going for mid-table the following season by finishing sixth, and this season we're proving 2003/4 and 2004/5 were just blips.

I never claimed to be a Manc. I'm a Manchester United supporter.
Southport beat Stevenage 1-0 at the weekend, get in!
it's funny because we won.
Do you live in Salford?

Yeah, I don't too much care about people insulting my football team, but when people make stupidly gay stereotypes like, "Uhh, you're stupid! You're on the dole!", I kinda feel dissapointed.
