Yeah hopefully. Although credit where it's due, N. Ireland were by far the better team. But still that's three **** performances in a row. It sems to me that Sven has a formula for each game which is basically: Keep Owen, Beckham and Ferdinand on the pitch no matter how badly they're playing, confuse the players by employing a completely useless formation which doesn't suit the team at all, take off England's best player at a critical stage in the game and, to top it all off, bring on Owen Hargreaves.

But Ireland did well against France and were unlucky to lose.

Usage Note: Its is the possessive form of the pronoun it and is correctly written without an apostrophe. It should not be confused with the contraction it's (for it is or it has), which should always have an apostrophe.

PS I'm right because Northern Ireland is better than England in every conceivable way

They mean that you should not confuse it with the contraction of it is or it has, when it's spelled that way. That's why they say that that contraction should ALWAYS have an apostrophe, contary to its, which CAN have an apostrophe, but needn't.

PS: Northern Ireland does rule, because Therapy? are from Northern Ireland.

its too late now, with only 2 qualifiers left, but i'd like to have seen a 3-5-2. terry, cole, ferdinand at the back, beckham, lampard and gerrard in the middle, wright-phillips and cole wide, and rooney and owen up front. the defenders are capable of coping, and beckham helps out a lot. the 5-man midfield showed potential, and its clearly a waste to do anything other than rooney and owen together up front.

Drop The Baby
09-08-2005, 06:28 AM
That's an idea, but it wouldn't have worked with Ash Cole in there, he's not a centre back. It would have to be something like Ferdinand, Campbell and Terry at the back, and with only Carragher and Ferdinand fit out of England's top class centre backs i wouldn't have felt too comfortable if he played that system

Ha! I've never wavered in my belief that Sven Goran Eriksson is the worst thing to happen to English football since Graham Taylor and I've been consistently proved right. You all should have listened to me in 2001 (granted, this thread/forum didn't exist and none of you had joined yet) when I called the Swedish banana out. I didn't see the match but hearing the result on my way out of Lansdowne Road having been beaten by an average French squad lightened up my evening considerably. I only wish I hadn't fallen asleep before I could watch the highlights :(

Likewise, I still think the English in this thread seriously overvalue the quality of your team. Sure you have two of the best centre-halves in the world in John Terry and Sol Campbell (though I fear a new manager would make the senseless mistake of playing Rio Ferdinand) not to mention the best centre-half in England, Jamie Carragher, who it seems will never break into the team. You also have two of the best central midfielders in Lampard and Gerrard aswell as the sublime right boot of Beckham, though he's usually good for nothing else. Up front you have Michael Owen, who's class speaks for itself. Otherwise, the England team is pretty bare. SWP could prove to be an inspiration for England, or he couldn't, it's too early to tell. Joe Cole has never really delivered for club nor country, neither has Dyer or Cole or any number of possible wing players England have tried out over the years (Heskey?).

In goal, you have the often stunning Paul Robinson, but he cant deal with a leaky defence on his own. Full-backs Ashley Cole and Gary Neville seem to receive huge praise in England but little anywhere else, given that they're decidedly average players. The problem, of course, lies largely with the awful manager but there's been a squad problem at England for a long time which that manager has never been bothered about fixing.

In other news, Ireland are slightly shitter than a very **** France.

7killer7
09-08-2005, 11:43 AM
the sublime right boot of Beckham, though he's usually good for nothing else.

I agree with most of what you said, but not that comment about Beckham. Fair enough, his footballing skills are not equal to his celebrity status, but there is so much more to his game than just his right foot. His work rate is phenomenal, as anyone who watched the Wales and N Ireland games will have seen. He covers so much ground, even though he is getting on a bit now compared to your Rooneys and your Coles.

His positioning is superb, he will always make himself available whenever anyone near him has the ball and is looking for a pass. His vision is outstanding, as his long passes out to Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole demonstrated in the last week. What I am surprised that people never mention is his tackling. With the possible exception of Rooney (when he's not in a mood), no-one in the England team tackles with that controlled aggression like Beckham. He will always fully commit himself to a tackle, even if its only a 10/90 chance that he'll win it.

Anyway, thats enough of me sucking his ****. Get Big Sam in now!!

EdwardTheGreat

At the end of the England game Alan Hansen made a comment saying 'You look at you're players. then pick a formation' So I tried that for England and it does look like there is a good formation for them. Englands best players are: Robinson, Cloe, Neville, Campbell, Terry, Ferdinand, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and Owen. They are surely Englands strongest 11 players, regardless of position right? Well they fit nicely into a 5-3-2. 3 central defenders, with Neville and Cole as attacking wing backs. This resolves the issue of which on of the 3 defenders to leave out, and you still have a solid backline, and good attacking wingers. Beckham in the center, with Lampard and Gerrard either side. Neither needs to go on the wing, as you have Neville and Cole who are both very good. This means they all have the opportunity of going forward, as there are 5 defenders behind them to shore up. Then you put Owen straight up front with Rooney just behind to assist and get the ball to Owen. In a very strict fashion this is 3-2-3-1-2. I can see very little wrong with this as a starting line up, although we may have to change should anyone get injured. Can anyone see any flaws that I've missed?

Yes. Owen is the most over-rated player ever, and hasn't done anything good for the team since that goal against Argentina.

apart from score more goals, quite a lot of them.

but i guess that doesn't count eh? a striker who scores goals, whatever next...?

but in contrast to common opinion and to the arse tabloids, i say give him (Sven) these next 2 matches to qualify and see how the team does in the world cup.

for once sky sports got their reporting absolutely spot on and remained largely impartial but let the interviewees say their positive parts. a much more sensible approach that the witch hunt carried out buy the shamelessly appallingly disgusting newspapers.

i think Sven is an intelligent (perhaps too intelligent) manager who realises that the rest of the world doesn't play 442 and who tries to develop a flexible squad who can adapt to their opponents' tactics and thus keep the upper hand. it's unfortunate that his players don't seem able to cope with that, apart from Beckham who shone imho with some fantastic passing. Unfortunately us English are too set in our ways and anyone who dares to try anything different is run out of town, it's that stale and outdated attitude that leaves us a 2nd rate football nation. we have to move on at some stage and catch up with the rest of the world.

Wednesday's result was very disappointing but it's not the end of the world, what was more disappointing was the reaction of the press afterwards. so much for the dunkirk spirit eh?

Well, I suppose you could have no goalkeeper.

Anyway "Edward The Great" made a valid point when he said the best players England have fit into a 5-3-2 formation, possibly with the wing backs going forward occasionally, an example being when there is attack on the right, the right defender goes forward and assist the right midfielder. We use it in club sometimes and it works quite effectively.

So I was listening to a Football Phone in before, and as we know, Everton lost again, this time at home to none other than Giant Slayers, Portsmouth!

(*Gasps*)

So anyway, a load of bitter blues were phoning in, all saying the same thing.

"Never mind sacking Souey, get rid of Moysey!".

Let's be honest, 1 point from 4 games is pretty pathetic, but all power to the man, Davey boy is a legend over here.

I thought to myself, "This season opener hasn't been kind to the 'Ton, first of all they get knocked out of the Champions League, by a goal from former Man UTD player come good, Diego Forlan, and then they get beat, in spectacular fashion." But what I really believe, is that Moyes isn't the root of this, the transfer window is closed now, and who do Everton have to show for it?

Not Figo, who they were apparently getting on loan, some Dutch bloke, who's yet to find his form.

So I ask you, at the end of this season Moyes, get yourself together lad, get some player with real names.

Hence, after qualifying for the Champions Leauge (getting knocked out mind you) and the Uefa cup, coming above Liverpool, he deserves the sack.

i remember from the arsenal vs fulham game, the crowd were singing

'Cygan, theres only 1 Cygan'

yeah, Arsenal are shocking at the moment. Wenger likes to gamble with his young players like Senderos, Flamini, Fabregas, Van Persie etc., but its not going well at all at the moment. and now that Henry's injured, they will have serious trouble both attacking and defending. good thing they have crap teams in their champions league group. FC Thun

Lyon are very good which I think explains the result, rather than Madrids poorness. Who else is in that group? Lyon, if they get some good draws, are a good bet for the quarters or semis. If they avoid the big few teams thay could do very well. Madrid are on a downward slope though, although to be fair they didnt have Zidane or Ronaldo.

Only thing I can think of for the van Persie incident is that the ref must have thought it was deliberate. It was a harsh sending, a complete accident, but the boot went up studs first into his face. I'm sick of seeing them on the bench, especially with a piss-poor game like today.

Wow, the Newcastle result was quite surprising based on their form this season.

it was surprising based on the midfield that was out there, i didn't think they'd be able to provide shearer or owen with any kind of service.
but they did indeed. aided by a very defensive rovers mind you. been well impressed with n'zogbia, he's only a kid but he's taken a lot of responsibility on and is showing a lot more promise than i was expecting. so many of our youngsters have failed to live up to expectations in recent years. i hope he's gonna keep it going :thumb:

even more surprising was the ovation given to shearer when he was subbed. good on the rovers fans.

I'm not as fierce as most of the other saints fans, becuase the rivalry comes from a city dispute, rather than the just distance, and i don't live near Southampton/Portsmouth. So count yourself lucky :p

they've been over fussy, officious, pompous and petty. and for some reason a lot more so than usual, problem is they pick the wrong offences to be petty about, marginal tackles and so on, when they should be contending with the diving, cheating and play acting that's all too prevalent.

yeah, this season the referee definitely IS a wanker.. :p
