After seeing MOTD2 last night, I've realised that Man Utd are serious contenders for Chelsea this season. A lot of people have said Chelsea will go unbeaten all season and shatter a lot of records, but Man Utd will be right up there with them all the way. I can't see a weakness in either side at all.

Looks like Newcastle have lost 2-0

too bad.. i thought the goals were the result of simple defensive lapses. :-/ Luque should have scored at the end too :(

i dont understand why Souness decides to play Chelsea and Man U's 4-3-3 formation. it'll never work with the players he has

it very nearly did, we were the best team with that very formation until we lost the creativity of dyer and emre. up to that point it was looking like a well balanced and promising team. once they went off the impetus was lost and boumsong eventually and lost us the match, uncharacteristically.

Carr should have been sent off

that was a dirty foul, ronaldo was clean through

2-0 suits me just fine, also my fantasy team has both rooney and van der sar
also Hienze I think

thing is tho, ronaldildo spends most of his time on his arse making "card" gestures, he got just what he deserved. likewise with that dutch wanker. if they were honest, fair players then they'd have got the decisions. as it is, they're cheats, and thankfully don't always prosper.

Did anyone see the dog playing with a ball at the Reading game?
Someone brought their dog onto the pitch during half time, it was wearing a Reading shirt and held the ball on its nose for a few seconds. Graham Stack kicked another ball over to the dog, but it hit the dog, and the fans started booing him.

I really don't think so, certainly not to the level of the newcastle side, I mean look at shearer, he elbows every defender he gets near and it doesn't get picked up, and as for diving, Jenas and Dyer are no better

what?!!

i've never seen dyer and/or jenas dive or roll around to any where near the degree (if at all) to the afore mentioned circus clowns. and as for this gesturing to the referee to give an opposite player a card, well, i would be disgusted if one of our own players did that.

the two "reds" mentioned are destined to be forever hated by opposing fans all over the country if not world for their antics. oh and shearer gives as good as he gets and gets on with the game, that's what makes him a good player. some certain others should learn from that and stop behaving like children. they should be ashamed. at least rooney just gets on with it as well and which will ultimately earn him respect.

guitarbaz, you keep having a go at ruud and ronaldo, yeah ruud sometimes goes over easily, but only when a defender is stupid enough to leave a leg hanging out or as given did, throw himself down infront of him after ruud kicked the ball away.

Ronaldo on the other hand will gesture for cards, because i'm sure he's getting sick of just being kicked by every defender in the premiership because most of them can't tackle him. It's like Ferguson said:

''If they have to foul him and bring him down all the time, it tells you he is doing something really well,''

I agree with you mostly about Ruud, he has had a history of going down easily, but Ronaldo, he just gets kicked around the park by anyone who either knows they won't keep up with him or just can't tackle him. Meh

i just like to see a good game of football without all the diving and histrionics that seem all too prevalent from certain players. like i said, the 2 players in question were a bit unlucky not to get the decisions in their favour, but their attitudes and play acting are now going against them. if more honest players had been in those situations you could have put money on the decisions going their way. i hope they learn from this but i fear it's a vain hope.

and lets be honest, ronaldo has got one of those faces you'd never get tired of punching. :D

Yeah....if I supported anyone else but United I'd probably be screaming for them to hack him down :)

But the actual foul by Carr was so blatent, he'd like linked arms with Ronaldo, the ref saw it infront of him and didnt do anything and the linesman can only flag for fouls if they happen about 2 feet away from them. Linesmen are pointless unless they want to give offsides, even then they get lots of 'em wrong.

So yeah, change subject from the Utd newcastle game, to Referees and Linesmen.

you guys hear they kinda forced Collina to resign? He signed a sponsorship deal, with a company who also sponsor AC Milan, so they said he either drops the deal or resigns from refereeing the Serie A because of the possibility of bringing the game into disrepute. So he resigned from Serie A.

I think it was a stupid choice, because now they won't want to sponsor him because he isn't refereeing anymore, so he loses out both ways :S

well, i think it's up to the referee how he uses his linesmen (or assistants as they now appear to be called). a mate of mine does non league reffing and he reckons they can call whatever they like, however it also appears that refs can be a bit pompous (there's a thing) and direct the linesmen to just run the line. this mate of mine was running the line with uriah rennie (shining example of a ref.....not) and rennie told him to keep any opinions to himself and just call offsides and throw ins. so the ref could make things easier by letting the linesmen shoulder more responsibility but they don't seem to use them, maybe power crazy...

shame about collina tho, he was a great international ref. you always knew that it would be a tough but fair match with him in charge.
david moyes thinks a bit differently however..

it's more this waving of the card thing he does that's the most annoying. however..

Luque has been billed as a left midfielder as well as a striker so he could be used as either. if they're all fit and work well as a team then we'll have quite a good side there. emre looks good and parker really ran the midfield on sunday for the 1st half.

Surprised wes brown wasnt in the squad for this weekend coming, after all garys out, and wes is better than the suggested replacements are.

I would say England's chances are about 1/5 or so. The squad seems pretty strong, great defence, alot of strikers to pick from, midfield nothing really special other than Lampard.

Anyway, what do you think Australia's chances of winning the cup are? Or even making it into the top 32?

i'd say there's always a chance but it's a slim one at the minute. i'll withold judgement on this one until (and if) we actually qualify for the world cup. there's never really a shortage of talented english players but getting them shaped into a team always seems an impossible task for some reason. after wins against wales and NI i'll be a lot more optimsitic..... :D

hmm..i just think it's a job for someone creative. he's a good manager but he's a bit of a journeyman, fine for bolton but not for england i'd say. that and he's probably too honest and would just say what was on his mind which would probably get him sacked. the england manager's job is as much a political one as it is a football one, unfortunately.

that said, it would be great to see someone like allardyce do the job in a "mike basset- england manager" type style. never gonna happen tho unfortunately..

Thats a bit unfair on Cisse, he broke his leg early on didnt get a chance to prove himself, then since he's been back he's played alright, didn't he score 2 goals for you guys in the champs league or something last game?

But yeah, liverpool are apparently looking to sell him, thats 2 strikers they'd of sold, so you have morientes on his own upfront :P good luck

i bet once Liverpool sell Cisee, they go after Fernando Torres. Benitez loves Spanish players too much (although Xabi Alonso is awesome)

and yeah, Totttenham getting Jenas. another young English player with high-potential for them

Well as for selling then going after someone, they've left it a bit late, todays the last day before transfer window closes. So they'd have to be quick about it.

Keane would be a good signing for Everton I reckon. He doesn't play much as it said, but he'd play every game at Everton, and we all know how good he can be.

Yeah they should do pretty well now, good manager in charge, good squad now, I reckon they might pull 4th again this season.

So now all thats left is for Liverpool to find another striker, they need one now badly, sure they could play morientes and cisse, but what if one gets injured? I dont know liverpools squad, but do they even have another striker good enough to play first team? They're supposed to be defending their european title and aiming high in the premiership, now with a lack of squad depth they won't, it's just too many games.

When united won the treble, we had an incredable squad, 3 competitions, the same 11 can't last every game.

If the treble (the real one, not liverpools carling cup one, though its a treble it's not the same :P) is ever done again, i'd say Chelsea will be the ones to do it, they've got like 3 teams worth of players that other premiership clubs (midtable) would kill for.

Henry(their only world class player) just doesn't work against a good defence...look at how he does nothing aginst Man United and Chelsea, the only quality defences in the premiership, (perhaps liverpool, but...) do you watch football?

Seriously people who claim that Henry doesn't play well in big games must just not watch the game or decide he's played rubbish before the match.

Arsenal vs Roma- Hat trick

vs Sparta Prague- Arsenal needed to win to go through, he popped up and scored an 85th minute headed winner.

vs Juventus- two goals as arenal won 3-1

vs Real Mallorca, with two clear goal win meaning Arsenal went through without fail he found space and ran from the halway line to score an 88th minute one on one

vs Inter- 2 goals, 2 assists

vs Liverpool last season when arsenal had gone out of the FA Cup and Champins league in a week, a hat trick

vs Chelsea last season- 2 goals in two games

any more examples needed?

And although i don't think Lehmann is a great keeper any more, he has had a storming start to the season, and Mart Poom was only signed due to the fact that we only have two keepers currently at the club

sven's apparently going for a 4-5-1, with becks playing behind lampard and gerrard, cole and wright-philips playing wide and rooney on his own up front.

i think its a good idea, the defence will benefit from beckham's work rate, and as long as lampard and gerrard communicate well, they'll be strong both supporting rooney and tracking back. and cole and swp are definitely quality choices for the wide roles.

England are not a team that leaks goals (remeber that the Denmark game had all four goals let in in the second half with a weakened back line and David James in goal) and that Wales are struggling with injuries, the key one being to Craig Bellamy in my opinion, especially with Savage not playing.

I'm not sure how many we'll score as we seem to be going for a different system, and i think it'll be interesting to see how well cole and SWP can link up with Rooney. I think SWP has really got a chance to show his class in this game

Hargreaves, whenever he has played for England has been pretty poor, Carragher will be good enough at right back, now Eriksson stupidly left out the obvious Gary Neville replacement Wes "Ace" Brown.

Hargreaves has been gradually improving performance wise over time, he just never gets a run in the team and sufferes due to a lack of understanding with the rest of the team.

Carragher will probably play centre back with Ferdinand as Terry and Campbell are both injured. Thank f'uck that useless sh!thead Brown isn't in the squad, i'd play Young every time.

Giggs is nowhere near the player he used to be, and should be dealt with reasonably comfortably in general

Wales 1-1 England. Wales to score first, header from John Hartston- probably from a corner in the first 10 minutes due to lack of concentration by England. TOOH- screw you, Wes Brown is awesome

You can always bet taht sven will bring on hargreaves. he aint england quality!!! Carrick is so much better and should have started in becks' posistion.

And why the hell did sven take of wright-phillips?? he was so good today and got taken off for defoe. and then also why were we playing long balls into defoe, he is a small player, so how could he header the passes!! Joe Cole was again not up to it, the same for carragher. Richardson should be our left midfielder, and i hope that for the world cup, we have campbell rio and terry along with King or Woodgate (if he actually plays!!!)

The only surprise to me is that phil neville didnt come on at the end! tahts gotta be a first!

Im starting to think that heskey would be a great addition to the squad if we play the 4-5-1 formation. we need a target man, like him or crouch.

but, good on england, glad to see another three points. and well done robinson for the great save.

Thats a very good point for Scotland, and they were a bit unlucky. However, Italy did miss some pretty easy chances.

thats true, but most of the big names are getten pretty old, zidaine (SP?) can still really play well.

They're based on games played and more importantly, games won. You can play a **** team dozens of times and become number one on the list. Let's look at the rankings right there.

USA, never won a thing or beaten any major team lately, above France, world and euro cup winners.

What a load of bollocks. Any football fan knows the FIFA rankings are a joke. The USA play crappy teams like Fiji all year round and get the same amount of points as someone like England who have to play tougher European opposition.

If you're seriously judging teams on the FIFA rankings, you're either stupid or.. well, stupid.

Another thing, are you forgetting USA was beaten by the England C team a few weeks back?

Cricket's ICC ratings are better, because you get more points for beating higher ranked teams and that kinda stuff, which makes it more realistic in terms of actual status

Burkina Faso are higher ranked thatn both wales and scotland. wow.

the points system is useless. usa play temas like trinidad and costa rica in their qualifiers. they are not the same as the europenas. One of the european groups has denmark, ukrain, greece and turkey in it. the usa could not beat any of these teams.

congratulations on the ukraine gettin to the world cup.
